Letter from the President and CEO,

Dear Friends of Myriad Botanical Gardens,

It is with immense excitement and deep gratitude that I write to you for the first time as the new President and CEO of Myriad Gardens. To step into this role is both a personal and professional honor, and I am thrilled to be joining a community so rooted in beauty, growth, and connection.

Spring is in full bloom, and there’s no better time to celebrate the vibrancy that lives in every corner of our Gardens. The tulips have made their grand entrance, the trees are bursting with color, and the air is filled with the kind of hopeful energy that only this season can bring. Walking through the grounds these past few weeks, I’ve been struck not just by the breathtaking horticulture, but by the warm smiles of families, the curiosity of school groups, and the quiet moments of joy shared by longtime visitors like many of you.

As we head into summer, our calendar is brimming with opportunities to gather, explore, and celebrate. From Myriad Summer Movies, Full Moon Bike Rides, Dancing in the Gardens, weekly yoga on the lawn, a full menu of classes, and vibrant seasonal plantings, there’s something for everyone. Our Children’s Garden is a hub of activity, and the Crystal Bridge Conservatory continues to inspire with its ever-evolving displays and programming.

Behind all of this magic is you—our members, our donors, and our passionate supporters. Your investment in this space makes these experiences possible. Whether you’ve been with us since the beginning or recently joined our mission, your belief in the Gardens as a place of joy, education, and community is the heartbeat of all we do.

I look forward to meeting many of you at upcoming events, hearing your stories, and working together to grow the legacy of Myriad Gardens for generations to come.

With heartfelt thanks and great anticipation,

Exciting Updates Coming to Thunder Fountain!

Renovations are in progress to refresh the tile and flooring surrounding the beloved splash pad. These enhancements will elevate the look and feel of the space just in time for summer fun, with completion expected by the end of May.

Thunder Fountain will reopen Memorial Day weekend and remain open through Labor Day weekend. We can’t wait to welcome you back!

Celebrating the Legacy of Herman and LaDonna Meinders

Herman and LaDonna Meinders dedicated their lives to family, philanthropy, and community service. They married in 1986 after meeting at Oklahoma City University (OCU), where LaDonna served as the assistant director of graduate admissions while pursuing her MBA. Herman was a supportive donor and alumnus. Throughout their 38 years of marriage, they made significant contributions to Myriad Botanical Gardens, OCU, and various nonprofits in the Oklahoma City area.

In 1995, they made their first contribution to the Gardens by establishing the Meinders Garden in the northeast corner of the property, which comprises 25% of the outdoor garden spaces. In 2013, they further enhanced the Meinders Garden with a donation to create the Meinders Garden Terrace. This terrace offers a picturesque view of the east lower lake and serves both as a daily gathering space and a venue for private events. It includes boulders sourced from the couple’s ranch in eastern Oklahoma. To ensure the upkeep of this section of the Gardens, they established an endowment that allows a portion of the investment earnings to be used for maintenance. In 2018, they also financed the installation and upkeep of Mo’s Carousel in the Children’s Garden, named in honor of Herman’s long-time friend and business associate Mo Grotjohn.

Herman was actively involved as a member of the Gardens Executive Board of Directors.

We deeply mourn the loss of LaDonna, who passed away on October 29, 2024, and Herman, who passed away on March 30, 2025. Myriad Botanical Gardens will always cherish the generosity and leadership of this remarkable couple.

The Way of Flowers: Orchid Ikebana

– A Celebration of Japanese Culture

For the seventh year—its second since the Inasmuch Foundation Crystal Bridge Conservatory redesign—the Myriad Gardens Orchid Show returned with an exhibition highlighting the connection between artistry and nature. Each year, the show embraces a unique theme, and for the first time, it explored a cultural inspiration by focusing on Japan with The Way of Flowers: Orchid Ikebana.

Japanese culture holds a deep reverence for nature, seamlessly weaving horticulture into daily life. This influence is evident in the prevalence of Japanese gardens at botanical institutions and in horticultural traditions such as the meticulous cultivation of bonsai, thousand-bloom mums, and the refined art of ikebana flower arranging.

Inspired by these traditions, our team worked to create an experience that honored Japanese aesthetics. Staff constructed large fans, folded a thousand paper cranes, built shoji screens, and recreated The Great Wave off Kanagawa using orchids. A custom-built torii gate, symbolizing the entrance to sacred Shinto shrines, welcomed guests, while suspended Japanese umbrellas added visual impact throughout the Conservatory.

Collaboration played a key role in bringing this vision to life. We were fortunate to work with experts from the University of Oklahoma’s Japanese department to ensure authenticity and cultural respect. Aya Okada, a skilled ikebana artist, and her colleague Michiko curated eight arrangements showcasing different ikebana styles. Aya also connected us with her student, Maxwell Bowling, who contributed sumi-e ink wash paintings, while our fantastic logo was designed by another talented OU student, Tyler Watkins.

Despite the complexity of this year’s installation—solving the challenge of properly folding fabric into fans, securing hundreds of umbrellas to cables, and assembling intricate displays—the journey was immensely rewarding. Though it is bittersweet to dismantle such a labor of love, the joy of seeing it come to life made every effort worthwhile. Thankfully, one element will remain: our colorful umbrella display, which will continue to welcome visitors for weeks to come.

As we reflect on this year’s exhibit, we look forward to the creative possibilities that next year will bring.

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

Meet Fatima Rodriguez, Manuel Pantoja, Valentina, Ángela, and Emmanuella

The first time I visited the Botanical Garden was when my daughter was 2 years old, around 2014. However, I didn’t attend my first event there until 2016, and that’s when I became a member. For many years, I have enjoyed going there in the mornings to walk, run, and exercise. Many people ask me why I chose that location, and I always reply that I feel safe there because there are always others around. It was also our favorite spot during the pandemic; it was the only place we felt comfortable visiting. Whenever we have guests from out of town, the first place we take them is Myriad Gardens so they can experience our favorite spot in Oklahoma.

Q: Tell us about your family! We are a small family, consisting of my husband, Manuel Pantoja, Valentina (12), Ángela (8), Emmanuella (2), and myself, Fatima Rodriguez. We have been living here for about 15 years.

Q: How long have you been members? We’ve been members (of Myriad) for about 8 years. I still remember our first Myriad event, “Pumpkinville.” Angela was barely a year old, and I couldn’t get a picture of her standing in them! That event was so great, that I signed up to go to all of them. We upgraded our membership (to a Friends and Family level) because it seemed like a good deal— we get to go to Myriad and Scissortail Park events now!

Q: What is your favorite event or activity hosted by the Gardens that you and your family enjoy? We don’t have a favorite activity because we enjoy all of them. Each year brings new and innovative experiences, and we are always excited to see what new things we will do and discover.

Q: What made you interested in becoming a member of the Gardens? We absolutely love Myriad Gardens! I wanted to join because I love their events—the people are friendly, it’s relaxing, and there’s always something fun to do. My girls spent their childhood at Myriad Gardens! We went to a million events: Pumpkinville, Halloween, Christmas, Easter, Cat in the Hat (Children’s Garden Festival), St. Patrick’s Day, movies, Chinese New Year. I have always liked my daughters to enjoy nature, Angela also learned to ride a bicycle there.

Q: How has being a member enhanced your appreciation for nature and our environment? We enjoy Myriad so much that during our vacations, we always go walking, running, and biking. My daughters love riding their bikes, having picnics, and spending time at the water splash pad, followed by some fun in the park. It’s a place that makes me feel safe at any time of the day.

MIEMBRO DESTACADO

Conoce a Fátima Rodríguez, Manuel Pantoja, Valentina, Ángela y Emmanuella

Hemos asistido a tantos eventos: Pumpkinville, Halloween, Christmas, Easter, The Cat in the Hat, St Patrick’s Day, noches de Pelicula, Chinese new Year.

CITIZEN SCIENCE: HOW OUR GARDENS CAN HELP GROW WHAT WE KNOW!

When we picture scientists, we imagine long white coats, goggles, and gloves. Maybe galoshes, floppy hats, and hightech equipment when out in the field. But every day scientists rely on ordinary people of all ages and backgrounds to advance their research through various means of participation and collaboration. We become ‘citizen scientists,’ and our gardens and nature in general become our laboratories.

Citizen science programs seek to answer and support realworld problem-solving and questions using publicly sourced data. Oftentimes all you need are your eyes or ears, a notebook, and a smartphone or laptop. So how can we get involved? Check out just a few of the many, many programs available to unlock your citizen scientist potential!

Bud Burst

Brought to you by the Chicago Botanic Garden, members of communities from around the United States can record changes in the flowering, fruiting, leaf drop, and other physiological aspects of the plants within their gardens and submit them to a database used to monitor seasonal shifts that can give insight into how climate shifts are altering our garden schedules.

Great Backyard Bird Count

Launched in 1998 by the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology and the National Audubon Society, this program takes place yearly every February and encourages people around the world to submit their own bird spottings over the course of four days to help build a realtime database of ever-shifting bird populations and migratory patterns.

Monarch Watch

Monarch Watch is a hub of scientific opportunity with classroom programming, conservation opportunities, how to build a monarch waystation, and more. Join a class at the Myriad Botanical Gardens on creating a monarch waystation, order monarch tags and report your monarch findings during their spring and fall migrations, and more all from your own garden, yard, or park!

OK Invasives

Beyond the Boardroom: Unique Corporate Event Experiences at Myriad Botanical Gardens

When businesses think about corporate events, they often picture sterile conference rooms and traditional office settings. But what if your next corporate retreat, team-building session, or elegant gala could take place in a stunning environment, surrounded by lush greenery and vibrant blooms? Myriad Botanical Gardens offers businesses the opportunity to take their events beyond the boardroom and into an inspiring, tranquil setting that fosters creativity, collaboration, and connection. Whether you’re planning a corporate retreat, team-building activity, gala, or casual picnic, the Gardens provides a memorable experience for all types of events.

A Fresh Take on Corporate Retreats and Meetings

One of the most unique features of Myriad Botanical Gardens is the versatility of its event spaces. From the Park House Event Center and Crystal Bridge Conservatory to outdoor gardens, the Gardens offers options for events of all sizes. Corporate retreats, which focus on employee wellbeing and team communication, can truly benefit from an environment that encourages relaxation and focus.

Instead of being confined to a conventional meeting room, your team can gather in a vibrant indoor or outdoor garden space. Imagine a brainstorming session in The Park House Event Center with a 260-degree view of the gardens. The atmosphere at Myriad fosters creativity and calm, making it an ideal space for ideation and collaboration.

Myriad’s team also provides customized support for meetings, including AV equipment, catering, and teambuilding activities, ensuring that every detail of your retreat is seamlessly handled.

Team-Building Activities in Botanical Wonderland

Team-building is a key component of any successful organization, and Myriad Botanical Gardens offers several engaging ways to foster cooperation and communication. From scavenger hunts through the gardens to guided nature walks, there are plenty of opportunities to strengthen team bonds in this breathtaking environment.

The Gardens’ picturesque landscape provides an ideal backdrop for outdoor exercises such as relay races, obstacle courses, or cooperative games. For a more relaxed but equally effective team-building experience, consider a picnic-style lunch followed by yoga or a mindfulness session. These activities help employees unwind, build camaraderie, and cultivate a perfect way to boost morale and productivity.

Elegant Galas and Receptions in a Natural Oasis

For businesses looking to host an elegant gala or sophisticated reception, Myriad Botanical Gardens delivers an enchanting atmosphere that blends beauty, sophistication, and nature. Several of our spaces offer panoramic views of the gardens, ideal for formal events like cocktail parties, banquets, and award ceremonies. Guests can enjoy drinks and hors d’oeuvres in a setting that feels exclusive and welcoming, surrounded by cascading water features and lush foliage.

For a truly unforgettable event, consider hosting your gala in the gardens themselves. The outdoor spaces at Myriad offer flexibility for receptions, allowing for customized layouts and catering.

The serene beauty of the Gardens elevates any event, creating an atmosphere of elegance that guests will remember for years to come.

Picnics and Outdoor Gatherings for a More Casual Touch

Not every corporate event needs to be a formal affair. For companies looking to offer a more casual experience, Myriad Botanical Gardens provides the perfect setting for outdoor picnics, barbecues, or casual gatherings. These events allow employees to bond outside of the office in a relaxed, comfortable environment.

Imagine a team picnic in the heart of the gardens, where employees enjoy a gourmet picnic basket while surrounded by seasonal flowers and greenery. Myriad offers a variety of outdoor venues that accommodate both small and large events, making it an ideal spot for family-friendly gatherings or informal company get-togethers.

Client Testimonials: Real Success Stories

Myriad has hosted numerous successful corporate events, and businesses have experienced firsthand the impact of an event in such an inspiring setting. For example, we’ve hosted large-scale events like a “Bring Your Kids to Work Day” for a downtown corporation. More than 600 attendees participated, enjoying lunch and activities in the Park House Event Center and Seasonal Plaza. This event allowed families to connect in the heart of the city’s most beautiful green space.

In another instance, Myriad hosted an NBA G League team for training sessions in the Terrace Room. The space provided a productive training environment with views of the gardens, helping the team stay energized and focused.

We were also honored to host the release event for the Porsche Macan EV, an elegant affair featuring dueling pianos, refreshments, and a chance to test-drive several models from Porsche’s lineup of cars and SUVs.

To book your event, call 405.445.7092 or email rentals@myriadgardens.org.

The Great Plains as You Know It: Keystone Species

When you think of central Oklahoma’s Great Plains, are there certain plants and animals that, when you imagine them missing, seem to make that ecosystem just not feel like the prairie? Believe it or not, there’s science behind this very concept!

There are several plant and animal species in every ecosystem that are referred to as ‘keystone species.’ Keystone species have a disproportionately large impact on their ecosystems that, when threatened or eradicated, can drastically alter or even destroy the entire system. Sometimes this can be due to inter-species relationships, their impact on biodiversity composition, food chain reliance, and more.

We can support our keystone species through our gardens in numerous ways. Consider planting natives and avoiding aggressively invasive plants like the Eastern Red Cedar (an infamous ecosystem disruptor) and Callery pears. Apply pesticides and herbicides responsibly to avoid runoff (or avoid altogether), and avoid poison-based pest removal methods. See below for examples of keystone species here in Central Oklahoma, and thank them for their service!

Black-tailed Prairie Dog

• Create habitats for numerous species with their burrowing habits.

• Support plant diversity via soil stimulation and herbivory methods.

• Food source (or supporting food source) for predators, detritivores, and opportunists.

Indiangrass (Sorghastrumnutans)

• Prevents soil erosion with extensive roots.

• Highly nutritious forage plant.

• Cover, food, and nesting for animals and insects.

• Indicator of plant biodiversity rigor.

Cottonwood trees

• Food and roosting source.

• Roots stabilize floodplains and riparian habitats.

• Broken branches provide ground shelter and nutrients.

Bison

• Maintain plant biodiversity through grazing.

• Nutrient cycling via four-chambered digestion.

• Wallowing supports ephemeral wetland creation.

Mayfly

• River and lake food chain stability.

• Indicator of ecosystem health.
