Raising money for cancer RED was the flavour of the day at Medowie’s local Coles store. Redkite Day was held on Friday, 3 June 2016 at Coles, Medowie to raise money for children with cancer. The fundraising event, held each month by Coles stores Australia wide is a partnership between the supermarket giant and the charity that was launched in 2013. Coles employee and Redkite supporter, Ann Marie Stott-Lucas told Medowie News of the Area that Redkite is the “Charity that Coles supports. We support the families of children with cancer. For example, financial wise—paying bills while the parents take time off work to care for their sick child.” On Friday, Coles sold red donuts, red delicious apples, and bags of red lollies to raise money for Redkite. Staff got into the spirit of the event by wearing red and decorating the store.

MAYOR of Port Stephens Bruce MacKenzie has called on the NSW Government to show it has “courage of its convictions” by reinstating its first preference to merge Newcastle City Council and Lake Macquarie City Council and, in doing so, taking the Newcastle-Port Stephens merger proposal off the table. “What the Government should do is trust its gut and push ahead with a merger of Newcastle and Lake Macquarie, as it clearly always intended to do,” Mayor MacKenzie said. The call comes after details emerged that the Government had earmarked the two cities for merger months before the outcome of the Fit For The Future review of councils across the state

was announced. According to reporting in the Newcastle Herald, the detail was provided to consultancy firm KPMG and subsequently included in a July 2015 report titled ‘Options Analysis: Local Reform’ – which reportedly included proposed mergers of Newcastle and Lake Macquarie, Maitland and Dungog, Gloucester and Great Lakes and Gosford and Wyong. “The Government should show us it has courage of its convictions. It should do what the Port Stephens community has called for and knock the proposed merger of our Council with Newcastle on the head, once and for all,” Mr MacKenzie said. CONTINUED Page 3

Ms Washington said, “I am calling on Christopher Pyne to review this decision and implement the findings of the review into AntiDumping Commission.” THE Shadow Minister for the Hunter, Kate Washington MP has called on the Federal Government’s Anti-Dumping Commission (ADC) to review its recommendation to not pursue action on behalf of Tomago based manufacturer Milltech. In 2015 Milltech made an application to the ADC regarding alleged dumping of Romanian and Italian hard chrome plated steel bar into the Australian market. The ADC found that this dumping had led to a loss of profits, price suppression, loss of revenue and loss of employment for Milltech. Despite

these findings, the ADC has indicated that they may not pursue any further action. Milltech is a local manufacturer which sources 12,000 tonnes of steel each year from Arrium’s steelworks in Whyalla. NSW and Federal Labor recognise the importance of a local steel industry. This week, NSW Labor announced its Secure and Sustainable Steel Jobs package, under which a NSW Labor government would require 90 per cent use of Australian-made steel in every publicly funded infrastructure project across the state.

Federal Labor has also announced its steel policy which will ensure Australia’s anti-dumping system has the right powers and penalties in place. In April this year the AntiDumping Commission provided Industry Minister Christopher Pyne with a report on how its current powers and penalties could be boosted to prevent the dumping of inferior products from overseas in the Australian market. Minister Pyne has yet to act on the report’s recommendations. A Federal Labor Government would use the Commission’s findings to further tighten Australia’s antidumping rules. Ms Washington said, “I am calling on Christopher Pyne to review this decision and implement the findings of the review into Anti-Dumping Commission.”

Pink Tea

News Of The Area

By Heather SHARP

WILLIAMTOWN Union Hall was transformed in May in what has become a very popular local event. The ‘Pretty in Pink High Tea’, which is the major annual fundraiser for Girl Guides, attracted its maximum capacity of a massive130 attendees. The event sold out within 24 hours and many people were on a reserve list to attend such is the popularity of the event. $3500 was raised to support Girl Guide activities over the next 12 months. District Manager, Elizabeth Keeley was delighted with the results and said that the High Tea is organised completely by volunteers. “It encourages the girls to be community spirited,”Ms Keeley told News Of The Area. “The girls are the waitresses, sell raffle tickets, learn hospitality. The girls love this opportunity to learn new skills,” she said. The pretty in pink theme was taken quite literally with even a pink piano finding its way into the themed room. Local businesses were also involved in the success of the event, donating goods and services so that more funds can be raised for the group. Some of the supporting businesses include, Nancy’s Party Lite, Body Shop Consultants, Ella Kama Hand Stamped Jewellery, Century 21 Medowie, Medowie Day Spa and Hair Salon, Bunnings, Fighter World, The Greenhouse Eatery, Medowie Boulevard Beaute, Fine Fettle Flats, Medowie Chinese Restaurant, Bull ‘n’ Bush Hotel, Allison McInroy Scentsy, Medowie Pharmacy, Medowie Coles. News Of The Area hopes we didn’t miss anyone there (please let us know) – but what a fantastic community effort! The girl Guides are currently embarking on their next fundraising endeavour, being the famous biscuit drive. Keep your eye out for members of the Girl Guides selling their traditional, chocolate, snack packs, and gluten free biscuits. For more information about Girl Guides (and where to buy biscuits), contact Girl Guides’ District Manager, Ms Elizabeth Keeley on 0400 157 911. Medowie Girl Guides meet in the Community Hall, Mondays, 5.30pm.

WORK: Construction work currently occuring at Newcastle Airport.

Busy time for Newcastle Airport with cars By Simone JOHNSON NEWCASTLE Airport is currently undertaking maintenance work on its entry roadways and providing upgrades to the car park. Kindler Way is currently underdoing repairs while The Bronze carpark is undergoing an expansion. This will include 50 extra car spaces to ease congestion for short and long-term parking.

The new renovations are taking place in the parking facility closest to the exit, directly across from the Mercure Hotel. A new dedicated AirBus drops off and picks up passengers to and from the Bronze car park. The free of charge shuttle delivers passengers directly to the airport terminal entrance and is only available to passengers in the Bronze car park. Beginning on 14 May, detours

and changed traffic conditions can be seen on Williamtown Drive. This includes reducing the speed limit on Nelson Bay Road near the airport traffic lights from 80km/h to 60. Traffic controls will be in place to ensure visitors in rental cars can easily access the drop off and pick up zone. A spokesperson for Newcastle Airport told News Of The Area,

“To be on the safe side, travellers are urged to factor in additional travel time to the airport.” “Impact to traffic has been none to very minimal as the works are happening off the main road, Williamtown Drive,” they said. The roadwork is scheduled to be completed and traffic set to return to normal by the end of June.

Mayor makes his position very clear: Merge FROM Page 1

“After all, 93% of our community is against it. 747 wrote submissions opposing it, and only 21 were in support. And there were 18-thousand petition signatures against the

move.” Mayor Mackenzie believes that the government should put Newcastle and Lake Macquarie Council merges back on the table for consideration. As open and forthcoming as Mayor Mackenzie

is, he told News Of The Area, “The proposed merger of Newcastle and Port Stephens was never a good fit. It was only ever a mechanism for the Government to sack Newcastle Council so it could install an administrator and progress its plans for the

area. “They didn’t have the courage to sack Newcastle Council outright. Instead they were prepared to sacrifice a good Council with $150 million in assets to achieve their aims. It’s a coward’s way out,” he said.

“I would also like to call the comments made by the independent MP for Lake Macquarie, Greg Piper, for what they are. Utterly ridiculous and hypocritical. “He objects to the idea and says that Lake Macquarie would be ‘sacrificed to

bolster Newcastle’. Yet he is happy to see another Council, with far less in common with Newcastle than his own area, sacrificed in the same fashion,” Mayor MacKenzie said.

Statutory Wills – Part 1

WITH shows like Master Chef and My Kitchen Rules reaching such heights in popularity over recent years, it’s not surprising to see home cooking going through a type of revolution of its own. Gone are the days of the evening meal consisting of meat and three veg’, or dessert being simply a bowl of neapolitan ice cream with your favoured flavoured syrup topping. Gone also is the stereotype of just who the home cook should be. Dads and kids are equally involved in the daily culinary activities these days, with entrees, mains and desserts all featuring regularly on the evening menu. For one Medowie teenager, Tiahna McGarry, her interest in cooking was sparked long before she ever knew what a ‘cooking show elimination episode’ was. Treena McGarry recalls what it was like in those early years with her cooking enthusiast daughter. “Before Tiahna could even speak sentences, she was interested in cooking.” “She used to carry around a little step so she could see what was happening on the kitchen bench.

Baxter writes News JENNY Baxter has lived in Medowie for over 10 years. She lives with her husband and four active kids. Jenny is a selfconfessed sports nut, photography enthusiast, educator and loves the great outdoors. When she’s not coaching or driving ‘Mum’s taxi’, you’ll most likely find her out on the rocks spotting whales or following her kids along a beach or park somewhere with her camera. Domestic duties and lazing around with a book are definitely not Jenny’s forte. Then again, give her a good house design magazine or hit play on a repeat episode of The West Wing and she’ll be in her own slice of heaven.

OPINION

Town water Bringing end to uncertainty WORK to supply town water to the 165 homes and businesses inside the Williamtown Investigation Area is underway, bringing an end to the uncertainty many felt about accessing water sourced from private bores. Many families that use tank and bore water in the Investigation Area have been relying on bottled water for drinking, after groundwater samples tested positive for fire-fighting foam chemicals PFOS/PFOA. Hunter Water Interim CEO Jeremy Bath said the $3.5 million project was a priority for the Williamtown residents. “I hope having access to town water residents sourced from Hunter Water’s network will provide some much needed relief,” he said. “Hunter Water publishes monthly the results of independent laboratory testing of its water sources, demonstrating that its water is free of PFOS/ PFOA contamination.” Mr Bath said, “Hunter Water has fast tracked the 12 kilometre watermain project to provide town water to those people

living inside the Investigation Area, having been told this is a project of significance to the NSW Government,” Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Scot MacDonald MLC said the NSW Government had stepped up to support Williamtown residents by funding the connection. “The NSW Government recognised the enormous impact the investigation and uncertainty have had on the community and therefore provided funding for Hunter Water to connect the residents, businesses and Salt Ash Public School to its system,” he said. “Funding the $3.5 million project to connect properties in the Investigation Area to town water follows strong advocacy by the Community Reference Group, including a meeting with Premier Mike Baird in December 2015,” he said. The project connecting residents in the Investigation Area to Hunter Water’s network is being delivered in a series of stages, with the first to be completed by June 2016 and the final by July 2017.

Good luck on it Dear News Of The Area, Regarding the story in News Of The

Area edition 2 June 2016 (Owner Opts for Tree Change). Great food, such a varied menu! Ms Saunders and staff are very customer orientated which makes your visit there a lovely experience! Good

The 93% Dear News Of The Area, Councillor Dingle’s recent comments in News Of The Area (Edition 2 June 2016 ‘Is decision a delay or serious’) regarding the Newcastle merger are a surprise. We have been led to believe that council and politicians from both sides of the fence have been on a ‘unity ticket’ in opposing the Newcastle merger. That perception has now been destroyed by Dingle’s somewhat supportive comments. Dingle is supposed to represent the residents of Port Stephens, though his comments in his letter to the editor hints that his main concerns are about him. Ie. Whether or not he will get a job on the nonelected interim panel, and that he will be busier and

have to drive further. But at least he is happy that he would get paid more money! If these are the things that he feels Port Stephens residents are concerned about, it shows how out of touch he is. Dingle does correctly state that the reduced representation for Port Stephens is a major concern, which gives us all the more reason to ensure that those we elect are people who represent the community. Dingle, as someone who happily ignores the 93% of the community that oppose this merger, should not be one of them. Beau Pitcher Medowie

luck on your new venture. Kathryn Cratchley (Comment from Medowie News Of The Area Facebook page)

My say: Merger Dear News Of The Area, Why is Councillor Geoff Dingle not publically stating he is in favour of the Newcastle merger when he was quoted in the latest Medowie Progress Association meeting that he supports it? Is he scared of the public backlash over something that is clearly extremely unpopular within the community. Where is the evidence saying the merger is good for the community? The IPART assessment of Newcastle City Council was that it was ‘not fit’ for the future, and should be merged with Lake Macquarie. By contrast, Port Stephen’s Council was assessed as being ‘fit’, and no merger should be considered. If the evidence exists, put it out there. You would think that advocates of the merger, like Geoff Dingle, would be shouting this evidence from the rooftops to advance the merger’s cause.

This is because there is no evidence of the merger’s benefit. Newcastle has 2.5 times the people, and hence will have 2.5 the number of elected representatives in a new council. Port Stephens will play second fiddle forever. Why did Geoff Dingle not attend the Dungog Council meeting recently with every other councillor to advance Port Stephen’s cause? Instead he arranged a public meeting at Fern Bay to promote misinformation, knowing full well no other councillors would be there to set the record straight. Port Stephens is being fed a dud. You would think that Geoff Dingle would stand up for his constituents like all the councillors. James Richardson Medowie (Comment from NewsOfTheArea.com.au)

Support for the needing people

MEET: Scot MacDonald. Julie Bailey, Pam O’Connell and Carol Hagan.

Community First are fighting de-stress

By Simone JOHNSON

SALT Ash Community First are fighting for funding for a community de-stress program for those affected by the Williamtown contamination. Three ladies from the group met with MLC Parliamentary Secretary for The Hunter and Central Coast Scot Macdonald in Sydney on Thursday, 2 June. The ladies put forward a 12-month plan that helps residents de-stress.

Classes are set to include relaxation techniques, meditation and breathing exercises. “It was a great pleasure to meet with Julie, Carol and Pam. I gave them an undertaking that the state government would continue to work to support the Williamtown community and I will be making a representation to the minister in reference to their appeal for their proposal,” said Mr Macdonald. The proposal asked for $20, 540 to support the community destress program for 12 months.

The plan is set to run one day and one night a week, welcoming anyone who has been negatively affected by the contamination. The de-stress program also includes a crèche for mums and welcomes all members of the community for a cuppa and cake. The day class would be located at Port Stephens Church of Christ, Salt Ash and the night class at Julie Hawkins Hall, Lemon Tree Passage Road. Julie Bailey, secretary for Salt Ash Community First told News Of

The Area, “This wouldn’t happen without the community’s help. We have people donating their time to do this.” The classes would run anywhere from 10-3 during the day, with the night session to be advised. “We’re not looking for a Band-Aid effect – were looking for an ongoing commitment for 12 months,” said Ms. Bailey. The de-stress program is set to be for the community and run by the community.

New kids play equipment fun By Simone JOHNSON A NEW $80,000 park has been built in Salt Ash. Lee Thompson Park, situated next to Salt Ash Community Hall and the Fire Station has been completely knocked down and rebuilt to include new equipment, soft fall and a shade structure. Completed at the end of 2015, the park took one month to be rebuilt. The park is situated next to a large field, designed for children and families. The re-build comes after the

previous park had become outdated and heavily vandalized since its creation in 1996. Brendan Callander, the Community and Recreation Coordinator at Port Stephen’s Council told News Of The Area, “The project met its $80,000 budget, through its deign and construction with French company; Proludic.” “The new park includes a nest swing, a playground unit with slide, and is fully fenced,” said Mr Callander. The playground also has a twister, a mock wall climb and another normal swing set.

The park was a scheduled program for councils 2015/16 works program, and is situated off the Community Centres veranda. The Port Stephens Library truck also stops at the park every second Monday from 3.15pm to 5.15pm to encourage community engagement. “The new playground facility will provide an up to date playground for the Salt Ash community and will hopefully be well utilized now and well into the future,” said Mr Callander.

ENDEAVOUR Foundation has committed to providing continuity of support for people with a disability in Port Stephens as the area prepares to welcome the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). Local provider, Disability Services Port Stephens, despite a superb 25-year track record, had sought a larger organisation to provide greater stability and continue supporting people with a disability to live their best life under the NDIS. Endeavour Foundation CEO, Andrew Donne, said that he appreciated the trust that had been placed in his organisation by the Port Stephens community. “It’s an exciting time to be in our sector, with great change and opportunity ahead,” he said. “We are stronger together – able to provide a greater range of community services for people with a disability, while remaining sustainable in an increasingly competitive and challenging environment.” Mr Donne told News Of The Area, “The NDIS will become available in Port Stephens from 1 July this year, so there isn’t a moment to lose.” Disability Services Port Stephens Inc (DSPSI) provides community access, in home support, respite and supported holidays to 55 people with a disability in Port Stephens, New South Wales. The novation of contracts and services from Disability Services Port Stephens to Endeavour Foundation took effect on 1 May 2016. Existing services, including Peer Support/Social Support, Flexible Respite and Community Access will continue to be available, and will be delivered by the same teams on the ground, under the Endeavour Foundation name.

Golf Pro relocating to the local club

q TOUR: Jamie Hook with his caddie at a tour event on the Gold Coast, photo supplied by Pacific Dunes.

PACIFIC Dunes golf enthusiasts have welcomed the newest Touring Golf Professional to the ranks of the club, with Jamie Hook recently relocating to the club. By Jenny BAXTER

Fresh from his recent tour event in Western Australia, where he placed tied for 8th in the WA Open, Jamie has begun his new role eager to build the club’s appeal to a wide range of golfers. “I hope to bring with me some knowledge and understanding of the game from a professional level. This will allow me to interact with the members and share some stories. “I also hope to bring some positive changes and give members and guests a warm, welcome feeling here.” He has reinvigorated the club’s focus on the youngest golfers in the community, running weekly kids’ clinics.

Commencing in June, the club will also introduce ladies’ clinics, with options for including classes for both beginners and advanced players. Hook comes to the role with a wealth of experience, having played on the PGA tour in tournaments throughout Australia, New Zealand, New Caledonia and Fiji. His best finishes have been tied 15th in the Fiji International, 23rd in the NZ Open, 33rd in the Australian Masters and 44th in the Australian PGA, with Hook unfortunately missing the Australian Open due to illness. With Pacific Dunes being ranked 54th in Australia by Australian Golf Digest,

GOLF the championship standard course ranks highly in Mr Hook’s opinion also. “Pacific Dunes’ course is amongst the best I have played. “I often get asked if Pacific Dunes is of the same or similar standard of the courses I play such big named tournaments on, and I could say that it’s as good, if not better, than some of the very well-known courses throughout Sydney and Melbourne.” Having begun his love affair with golf at the age of 12 at the Charlestown Golf Club, Hook made the decision to turn the game into his career and completed his traineeship at the Charlestown club in 2014. After gaining his PGA tour card in 2015, Hook finished 42nd on the money list, securing his tour card for 2016 as well.

RACE: Dixie and Dane Conlon at the Cessnock Racecourse.

School Regionals prove to be a rewarding competition CROSS COUNTRY FROM Page 12 Jai said, “I won the Port Stephens Zone race in May and I just finished 3rd here at regionals. “I’ve won twice before at regionals but this is my fourth time making it through to State,” he told News Of The Area. With his time of 10.20mins for the 3km distance, Jai was a mere 7 seconds behind the leader

and 2nd place runners, both from the Newcastle City zone. Jai’s older sister, Baylee, finished thirteenth in the 13 year girls’ secondary students’ event. Jai now moves through to the Stage Championships, to be held at Eastern Creek on 22 July. Another of the fast finishing families from Medowie were the Conlons. Dane, also racing in

the 12-year-old boys’ race, finished thirteenth, whilst his younger sister, Dixie, finished 16th in the 8/9 year girls’ race, an age group she is still eligible for next year. Dixie’s result is put into perspective further, when considering 12 months ago she spent 10 weeks in a wheelchair with a severely broken leg. Several other Medowie students finished with personal best times or placings, all high achievements in their own right.

News Of The Area

Prime koala habitat in Port Stephens THE NSW Opposition has called on the Baird Government to immediately halt the imminent sell-off of prime koala habitat in Port Stephens and work to find a solution to save this vulnerable koala population.

The area of land currently owned by the Department of Education is surplus to requirements and has secretly been put up to be sold off to the highest private bidder this week. The area is classified as being of high environmental and indigenous heritage value and is home to an endangered population of koalas. Two weeks ago there was a community meeting in Port Stephens attended by more than 250 concerned local residents, highlighting the strong community support for returning this environmentally sensitive land to the Mambo

Our area fared very well after the storm

A COMBINATION of good fortune and good preparation has meant Port Stephens was relatively unscathed in the east coast low weather event over the weekend. Port Stephens Council crews responded to minor incidences of fallen tree branches across roads and footpaths as well as flooded stormwater drains on Saturday and Sunday, as 236mm of rain was recorded in our area over 72 hours. Road closures were in place in areas affected by the mix of king tides and heavy rain. Stephen Bernasconi, Council's Acting Facilities and Services Group Manager, said the damage toll was nowhere near as devastating as severe weather events in January this year and last year's so-called April super storm. "Port Stephens and the Hunter generally has experienced several major weather events in a short space of time and Council has implemented and reviewed a number of its processes as a result," he said. "We had crews on stand-

Wetlands. Appeals to halt this sell-off made to Education Minister Adrian Piccoli and Environment Minister Mark Speakman have so far fallen on deaf ears. Koalas in NSW are declared endangered and some scientists suggest they could be extinct in NSW by 2050. The only solution is for this land to be transferred to Port Stephens Council and a plan put in place to preserve this prime habitat for koalas forever. Shadow Minister for the Environment, Penny Sharpe MLC said, ““To auction this land off is to guarantee

the death of this koala population.” “The Baird Government must act to save these koalas,” she said. “There is a clear solution here: this parcel of land should become part of the neighbouring high environmental value Mambo Wetlands and be preserved in perpetuity.” Member for Port Stephens, Kate Washington MP said, “This parcel of land is of great importance to the residents of Port Stephens - economically, environmentally, socially and culturally.” “This area is widely known as a high conservation area for koalas and as a beautiful parcel of nature that residents value and enjoy – to have it ripped away from them so callously just beggars belief,” Ms Washington said.

assets such as leaking roofs and playgrounds and we will be continuing to do assessments throughout the day," he said. "But at this stage we seem to have come through relatively unscathed." A full list of roads affected by storm water inundation is available on Council's website.

THE NSW Department of Education’s latest annual report reveals a massive amount of underspending on the state’s schools. The Baird Government committed to investing $14.2 billion on education during 2014-15. Yet the Department’s own report (p.56) shows an actual underspend of $281 million less than promised. Millions in unallocated funds should have been spent reducing the crippling maintenance backlog in Hunter schools or a building new school in Medowie, to meet demand in growing communities. The report also reveals (p.69) that in 2015 the government decreased spending on maintenance by $26.6 million from the previous year. The full annual report can be viewed here. In April, NSW Labor

NewsOfTheArea.com.au

obtained documents under freedom of information that indicated a staggering $732 million maintenance backlog across NSW primary and high schools. In the Hunter, schools have maintenance backlogs totaling $70 million, including Maitland High School with $1.6 million, Irrawang High School with $1.5 million and Kurri Kurri High School with $1.4 million. The backlog consists mainly of basic necessities like toilet and sewer repairs, carpet replacement, painting, fixing damaged rooves, installing guttering, replacing windows and other general repairs. The underspend is particularly concerning given the urgent need for a public high school at Medowie. Kate Washington MOP said, “Tackling the huge maintenance backlog in

Hunter schools is more important than coming in massively under budget. If the government isn't going to build a new public high school in Medowie, it should at least maintain our existing schools. "The maintenance problems in our schools keep rising because small problems are not fixed. Our kids can't possibly thrive in an environment with dilapidated guttering, mouldy walls and leaking taps." Ms Washington said, "Families across the Hunter will be horrified to learn that the Baird government has sat on funds for the benefit of its bottom line when it should be benefitting the kids." “If the money was there, why wasn’t it spent on Hunter schools? The Government should apologise for promising to spend more but actually delivering less.”

Region Cross Country Kids DESPITE it’s relatively small population compared to other towns in the Hunter, Medowie was certainly well represented at the School Sports Association (SSA) Hunter Region Cross Country Championships on 3 June.

By Jenny BAXTER

Held at the dustriddled Cessnock Racecourse, athletes from both primary and secondary schools took to the track to compete in the annual event. With distances varying from 2kms for the 8, 9 and 10 year olds, to 8kms for the senior high school students, runners were faced with

q

the challenge of running through dirt, grass, sand and even horse hoof diverts. Students from Medowie and Wirreanda Public Schools, as well as Medowie residents who attend schools further afield, took part in the event, as part of the Port Stephens Zone Team, with outstanding results. Most notable of the achievements were the

results of athletes from two well-known athletics families from Medowie. Siblings Jai and Baylee Holland both placed in the top twenty of their respective events. Jai backed up his previous form with a top 3 finish in the 12-yearolds’, primary schools event. CONTINUED Page 8
