Bikers in the Area GREAT Lakes Tourism is asking Forster Tuncurry and Hawks Nest / Tea Gardens locals to give the 2016 Signature Cure de Tour an enormous welcome, Great Lakes style, when the bicycle charity team roll into town on Thursday 5 - Saturday 7 May. The Channel Seven Sunrise team will be on hand for live coverage in both Forster (John Wright Park) from 6.30am on Friday 6 May and Hawks Nest (at either Hawks Nest Surf Lifesaving Club or Marine Drive Tea Gardens) from 6.30am on Saturday 7 May. “Cure de Tour is celebrating its tenth anniversary and everyone is most welcome to come along to these venues to welcome the Cure de Tour which is retracing the inaugural route from Brisbane to Sydney,” said Council’s Coordinator of Tourism, Ms Sharon Bultitude. “We really need a crowd along to give them a rousing

welcome. You might even perhaps say hi to Mark Beretta and James Tobin.” A team of 120 riders, 40 stage riders and 40 support crew members will travel 1,520kms over 10 days raising funds for cancer research, support and prevention projects. Along the way donations of $10,000 will be made to each community visited to fund a local cancer project. “We’re honoured that the Tour will visit not one but two communities in the Great Lakes,” said Ms Bultitude. You can also book in to attend one of the community celebration dinners - on Thursday 5 May at 6.30pm at Club Forster or on Friday 6 May from 6pm at the Hawks Nest Golf Club. q FOUR GENERATIONS: Thora Mabel Ireland with her Daughter Thora-Louise from Bulahdelah, Granddaughter Peta Louise from Stroud and Great Granddaughters Brianna Louise and Philippa Mabel.

WITH Mother’s Day this Sunday, families are planning many different ways of celebrating the day. Children are the greatest gift of all for 92-yearold Thora Ireland from Bulahdelah. Mrs Ireland said she will be kept busy on Sunday with visits and messages from her eight children, 23 grandchildren, 34 great grandchildren and two great, great grandchildren. “I have a wonderful family and I’ve been blessed to have them all,” she said. “I’ve always tried to do my best by them and my trust has always been with the lord, and I am thankful to Him.” Mrs Ireland said Sundays traditionally include a family lunch with her children’s families and frequently sees four-generations enjoying time together.

With an obvious passion and talent for baking, Milton said he was now looking at taking on an apprentice to pass on his skills to someone who was interested in the trade. “It’s a dying trade and needs new blood,” he said. “It isn’t easy, but it has a lot to offer the right person.”

On the particular facts, the Full Bench (agreeing with the Commissioner’s primary decision) said that there had not been a demotion. Rather, the worker’s duties had been reallocated resulting in slightly lower pay and different conditions; but this was permissible under the terms of his employment agreement.

proving that there had been such a significant (unilateral) change to their pay, conditions or duties, and that a dismissal had occurred. The Full Bench disagreed, saying that the correct approach was that an employer who disputed that a dismissal had occurred (as alleged by a worker) had the onus of proving there had not been a significant change in pay, condition, or duties and that the worker remained in employment. The case is a reminder to employers of the importance of record keeping because, in the event of a claim, they may bear the burden of proving disputed issues and, if they cannot, they may be unable to successfully defend the claim: Moyle v MSS Security Pty Ltd [2016] FWCFB 372.

THE Myall Street Bakery Café has produced some of the best-baked goods yet again, winning multiple awards at the Newcastle Baking Show last week. Traditionally known for its tasty pies, the popular bakery in Tea Gardens can now also boast the best sausage rolls and pastries in the Hunter Region after wins in both categories. Bakery owner Milton Churchill said a number of qualities contribute to producing his award winning sausage rolls but they only contain one secret ingredient. “They have to have a good flavour, good meat content and a nice pastry, with plenty of sauce if you like that,” he said. “I love experimenting when baking and that’s the secret ingredient - Love.” The Myall Street Bakery also claimed third place for plain pies and wholemeal high-top loaf in a quality field of more than 70 bakers coming from as far away as Canberra. Milton has over 36-years baking experience learning many skills of the trade from family members. “I used to work with my father until he retired in his 70’s and my sister and brother-in-law

q FISH: Competition Winners Jayden Walting, Thomas Evans, Fiona Minett and Grace McRae. (Above) Grace McRae with her winning catch. By Daniel SAHYOUN BULAHDELAH Fishing Club members returned from their monthly outing with a heavy haul of fish to be weighed last Sunday. Twenty-six anglers took to the waters of Mungo Brush over the weekend with several new club members enjoying their first outing. Keeping busy, the anglers caught a total of 236 fish with a combined weight of over 100kg.Competition was strong with several close results and records broken. Melissa Smith won the Mystery Fish category whilst Steve Coleman landed the Biggest Fish, hauling in a

5.86kg Mulloway. New member Jayden Watling won the junior category with the sub-junior title going to Grace McRae. Thomas Evans was successful in the men’s category with 215 points and 28 fish caught, beating Darren Carrall by a single point. Fiona Minett led the women’s category with 57.5 points. Paul Shultz broke the record for the Biggest Bream with a 1.055kg catch and just fell short of the Biggest Salmon record by 100g. Fishing Club President Darren Carrall said the weekend’s perfect weather made an enjoyable and

successful outing. “We were fortunate that the rain held off over the weekend, with the bad weather coming in after the outing,” he said. “There were plenty of fish around during the weekend with the first of the bream coming out, which will mean fishing will be a lot better over the next month.” Mr Carrall said club members were looking forward to two more outings planned for the month. The Mid-North Coast Competition commencing on 20 May and the Gibber to Gibber Competition against Tea Gardens/Hawks Nest Fishing Club on 28-29 May will keep members busy.

Three local girls in the Marching Band come from Tea Gardens and Pindimar. Susie Webb, Myisha Edmonds and Hannah Webb have said some of the Major

highlights of the trip were performing in front of 2000 school students at a top Public School in Xian and also climbing The Great Wall. The band performed at places including Disneyland Hong Kong, The Ancient Wall in Xian, the Great Wall in Bejing and at five high schools. The twelve day tour was packed with performances, sightseeing, four flights and two bullet train rides it was a

very jam packed schedule. The cultural experience was magnificent and all the children and adults involved have gained some wonderful memories. The children had a very memorable experience learning the culture and mixing with other high school musicians. Many of the students exchanged contact details to keep in touch.

John RUMBLE

SET forward on a large 707sqm block of land is this fantastic 2-storey property.

Four week home building MAAP House is a company that Bulahdelah builder, Daniel Reitsma, has been developing for the last three years. It is an innovative, architect-designed prefabricated house that is able to be built in approximately four weeks. Daniel Reitsma was introduced to Edward Duc through the Master Builders Association in Newcastle with the hope that Daniel would be able to construct what Edward had designed. Edward Duc is an architect who is looking at how would concerns for sustainability affect attitudes to housing produced by non traditional methods in his PhD. His design consists of clad steel framed floor and wall panels. These panels, the bathrooms and the kitchen were built in a factory. The panels were then transported to the site on a truck and got installed on a steel piers and bearers system.

The bathrooms, kitchen and the roof were installed by crane. The floor and wall panels were installed by hand. The prototype, the three bedroom, double living areas and two bathroom family home, was completed in approximately six weeks on site. Daniel is also the owner of EF Building Solutions and has been building in the Hunter region and Bulahdelah for the last eight years. Through this time he has employed students that attended Bulahdelah Central School. Five former students, Joseph King, Zac Allen, Ethan Schloeffel, Jacob Blanch and Andrew Wood all worked on the project at different stages. Daniel Reitsma spoke to News Of The Area and said, “MAAP House is exciting as we are on the cutting edge of creating a sustainable, environmentally-friendly house that will be leading the way in alternative house construction.

from 11-4 pm at 102 Lawson Avenue, Woodberry. This will give the community an opportunity to see the completed prototype house. For further information about this new house design or building company go to www.maaphouse.com.au

Pre-fabricated homes are a realistic answer to the housing shortage in Australia. Our MAAP Houses are competitively priced and meet all council requirements.” There will be an open house on Saturday 7 May

Development Sham By Len ROBERTS Deputy Mayor Great Lakes Council IN November last year, Council refused development Application for a Motel & Swimming Pool - 10 Myall Street, Pindimar. The application was for a non-urban block of land on which there is no dwelling entitlement. Yet, when our previous LEP was translated into the Statewide template LEP, although it was not permissible for a dwelling, an anomaly was created which allowed for a motel type accommodation. Council pointed this anomaly out to the Department of Planning who agreed to commence the process to amend the LEP to overcome this anomaly. However, in the meantime, an application was lodged for a motel which council refused as it believed it was a sham. The applicants have lodged an appeal in the Land and Environment Court. If the applicants are successful in the appeal there will be implications for all nourban land until the LEP is amended. Such amendment is imminent. A sham DA is when council forms the opinion that the Development Application is for a lawful use but in reality is intended to be used for another purpose, generally a non-permissible use. In this case council formed the view that it was highly unlikely that a motel at this site in Pindimar was unlikely to be a successful business and would either be left as a white elephant or more importantly used as a dwelling.

The matter was refused in part for the following reasons: • That Development Application No. 269/2015 for the construction of a motel on Lot 4 Section N DP 8287, 10 Myall Street, Pindimar be refused for the following reasons: • Council is of the opinion that the application is a sham. • The applicant has not provided the consent of the three (3) of the adjoining land owners to establish the Asset Protection Zone required by the NSW Rural Fire Service in accordance with the Bush Fire Safety Authority dated 14 July 2015. • The maximum height of the building from natural ground level will exceed the maximum height of building map in Great Lakes Local Environmental Plan 2014 (8.5m) by 1.43m. • The proposed development would create an undesirable precedent for future development in the locality. • The proposed development would create an undesirable cumulative impact. • The proposed development undermines the rural landscape character of the land. • The tourism character of the proposal is not in association with the primary capability of the land. • The proposal cannot be connected to reticulated water and sewerage which is critical to the water quality of Port Stephens. • The proposed development is not in the public interest. • Council has resolved to prepare an amendment to the LEP that would impact the permissibility of development of this nature.

Searching High n Dry

Feel Snubbed Dear News Of The Area, FOLLOWING on from the announcement by Hon. Bob Baldwin MP that he would be retiring from Federal Parliament at the upcoming election, and the subsequent announcement that the towns of Tea Gardens (TG) and Hawks Nest (HN) would now be represented by the sitting Member for Lyne, the Hon David Gillespie MP, the following makes interesting reading, I’m sure. This past week , a personal, written invitation was sent to the Hon David Gillespie MP by a member of our community here at TG and HN, inviting the Honourable gentleman to visit the area and meet with the various leaders of our community. This request followed the letter from Dr Gillespie setting out his/the recent achievements within the seat of Lyne, and seeking endorsement from the electorate. Dr Gillespies’ reply to the invitation was “short and sweet”. I quote in part,“As you can imagine, I receive many emails [invitations] from throughout the electorate and across Australia.”

“If the matter is urgent, call my office at Port Macquarie or Taree and one of my helpful staff will begin processing your invitation as soon as possible.” The reply goes on to state that should the invitation come from constituents who live in the area he is happy to pursue any matters with the relevant Commonwealth Minister, department or agency on their behalf. No mention of wanting to see and hear for himself what achievements had been gained with the help of the Hon Bob Baldwin MP, for TG and HN or encourage our support for him going forward. As one reads the reply it becomes obvious that it is a stereo letter, not a personal reply to a personal invitation. Snubbed. Dr Gillespie was first elected to Parliament at the last election. He has learnt little about representing all his constituents, including those he has recently gained. His attitude is one of serving the Nationals first, farmers, rural areas and let the rest contend for themselves. Gordon Bartlett JP Hawks Nest

Performing Arts with Loose Connections Dear News Of The Area,

LOOSE Connections is a recently formed inclusive group of like minded people with an interest in the performing arts. A Christmas production is in the early planning stage and will consist of two short productions, “Amahl and the Night Visitors” and “The Christmas Truce”. “Amahl and the Night Visitors”, a short and delightful opera for children, takes place near Bethlehem,

after the birth of Christ. Amahl, a crippled boy and his mother, are visited by three Kings seeking shelter for the night. Diane Williams who is directing this opera has had considerable experience both here and overseas. “The Christmas Truce” is written and directed by Brian Jones and is a very moving narration with carols, of this amazing Christmas in the trenches in WW1. Auditions for “Amahl” will be held at the end of June/

early July and will be open to the whole community. Anyone interested in seeing a DVD of the original opera, is invited to attend the clubhouse at The Grange on Tuesday, 17 May at 8.15pm. Election blows, pain, shadow boxing and uppercuts Bob Macklinshaw

Dear News Of The Area,

NEARLY seventy years ago, fondly I recall, the spirited debates my grandparents had on the comparative merits of election platforms, focusing upon those aspects most likely to progress the nation and to enhance their lot in life. The time and propositions were embraced enthusiastically. Come election day, it was a day for celebration. Dressed in their best, they rode in to town in a horse drawn sulky. Their optimism was palpable. As we examine the progress, prosperity and privileges we enjoy today, we could say “they got it right” and indeed we’d say “probably their expectations were exceeded”. But as Greece, Skaife and Bond found and others are finding, when the hands of debt have you by the throat, prosperity can be a passing phase and is not guaranteed in perpetuity. It is a time for

caution and restraint! I’ve worked in large instrumentalities, one riddled with debt, another was debt free, be assured the latter services its’ stakeholders better. Sadly, the parlous state of our political leadership, heightens my levels of despair and pessimism. Their policies just don’t resonate. I am haunted by the vision of one shadow boxing before a mirror chanting “mirror, mirror on the wall can I outsmart them all” and in the other corner there is a jester thrashing about in a giant paper bag crooning “hey big spender (or should the muffled sound be interpreted hey big lender)”. Regardless, neither has waded into the sea of debt for the fight and neither has landed a telling blow on the deficiencies in the others fanciful thought bubbles. I am sorry but throwing squillions at Climate Change, Submarines

MYALL COAST

Like minded rate payers Dear News Of The Area,

and Royal Commissions, when the critical services impacting on our lives today are creaking at the seams, just doesn’t cut the mustard for me. We seem to be confronted with evaluating who is more politically dumb and he whose policies are dumber. So could someone who has the intestinal fortitude for the fight with our real plight, step into the ring with their dooks up and we’ll take the pain of some low blows and maybe an uppercut, if there is

a focus on the long term prosperity, not the short term political survival. I’d prefer to be fronting up on election day dressed to the nines like my grandfather full of optimism; rather than in thongs and torn jeans, pessimistically riding an old nag named ‘Complacency’ in pursuit of a rough ride further up the mountain of debt and find myself flogging a dead horse. ORIGINALLY formed as the Jimmy’s Beach Preservation Society over twenty years ago the Winda Woppa Association is an Incorporation of likeminded property owners of Winda Woppa. There are 158 homes on Winda Woppa, which faces a number of important issues, significant among which are the protection and preservation of Jimmy’s Beach and the stabilisation of sand movement across Port Stephens. Briefly we want to protect and conserve Winda Woppa while making sure the social and economic needs of the region are also protected, including the income stream it generates for the twin villages of Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest. Our web site can be accessed by going to Google or Bing and typing in “Winda Woppa Association”. With the passing of time and people selling and buying properties our information about the owners of the

Winda Woppa properties has declined and the Committee has recognised the need to improve our knowledge. To achieve our work we need your help no matter who you are, a resident, a local, a tourist, a holidaymaker, a water sport enthusiast, ecologically-minded in any way or just have some time or money to commit to a good cause. Please consider becoming a member and supporting us in any way you can by going to the “Memberships” page of our web site. If you know someone who has a property on Winda Woppa or you think may be interested in helping it would be a great if you show this article to them. Of course, if you were also able to share our web site address with your neighbours, friends and acquaintances and ask them to consider becoming members it would be a great help. Soldiers Point winning the Master Board 77-50. Grade 3 coped better with the conditions at Soldiers Point in what turned out to be 3 very tight games. The Steve Pell combination winning 21-17, the Richard Lee team winning 22-20 and the Ben Brown team capping off a great win 18-17. Tea Gardens winning overall 61-54. Great win! The Grade 4 side, playing Hamilton North at home on the synthetic green, went into their match as definite underdogs with several Grade 7 players filling in gaps for more established players. They revelled in their underdog status and with nothing to lose they crafted a great win with the Ron James team sneaking home by 3 shots, 19-16 and the Danny Johnson team blitzing their opposition 25-11. They more than made

up for the 9 shot deficit experienced by the remaining team. From what the Jaffa was told, Danny Johnson had a remarkable game. Tea Gardens winning the Master Board 53-45. Well done the mighty 4’s! The Grade 6 side were keen to play Hamilton North on the synthetic green after they were on the receiving end of a slow grass defeat in their previous encounter. It was noticed that many Hamilton North players used wide bias bowls more suited to their conditions on grass. All Tea Gardens teams had great wins. The Doug Naylor team dropped a 5 on the penultimate end but ran out winners 23-21 in a tight game. The Ron Webster team were never headed after opening up a handy lead early

in the game. They won 21-16. The word was that John Younghusband had an outstanding game for his side. Well done John! The Dave Austin combination scored a 6 on the 6th end and never looked like losing picking up two 5’s during the remainder of the game and concluded with a 35-17 win. Tea Gardens winning the master board 79-55. Great win! 1 May: Two washed out home games affecting Grades 3 and 7, were scheduled to be played today but were washed out again. Sunday Introduction to Bowls was also cancelled due to the wet conditions. Entries are being received for the Pelican Pest Control

Drake playing swinger in one of the matches. The winners with the highest score were, Wilma Drake, Francis Betar and Liz Kelly. Thursday, 27 April: It was another lovely day in Paradise today. The last of our Pennant games were played today, with the Grade 2 side competing against Lemon Tree Passage ladies at Lemon Tree Passage. Nola Jackson’s team had a really good win taking the score to 33 – 9. It was nice to finish on a ‘high’. Maynie Robert’s team

went down with a score of 18 – 25. It was an overall score was a win for Tea Gardens 51 – 34. Well done girls. After the matches Lemon Tree Passage provided a very nice lunch. The menu was extensive with a choice of, fish and chips, quiche, lasagne, or a baked dinner. The desserts were a yummy selection of all sorts of goodies. Everyone went home very satisfied. Social Bowls: There were 14 bowlers on the green today.

The format was, one 1 game of fours with a swinger and one game of triples. All players enjoyed a perfect day with little or no breeze and a relaxed atmosphere after the pressure of Pennants. The winners with the highest score were, Sheril Johnson, Dorothy Thompson, Pat Baker and Lorraine Harvey. Welcome back to Pat and Lorraine. Next week will be busy for our ladies. On Tuesday, 3 May, we are hosting our Biggest Morning Tea, then, after social bowls

Versatility Day, scheduled for Monday 9 May. With big prizemoney at stake this is an event not to be missed. The semi-finals of the major pairs have now been shifted to 15th May at 1.00.p.m Providing of course, the weather does not intervene again.

q GOOD FORM: John Younhusband.

Pennant games are just around corner BOWLS Tea Gardens Women’s Bowling Club By Lily SMITH

TUESDAY, 26 April: After today the Grade 2 side have only one more game to play then Tea Gardens Pennant season will be over for another year. The Grade 2 side played Soldiers point at Soldiers point. There were two players from the side who were unavailable so two substitutes, Lynne Green and Liz Kelly

filled the gaps. Maynie Roberts team had a very good win with a score of 33 – 15. Nola Jackson’s team went down with a score of 14 – 22 The overall result a win to Tea Gardens who scored 47 – 37. Well Played. Social Bowls: There were 17 bowlers in attendance today. there will be a Post Pennant Lunch. This function is to congratulate the Pennant players for a job well done, but also to acknowledge the good work done by the umpires, controlling bodies and all the behind the scenes helpers who kept the home Competition going and for those who catered the morning teas. On Thursday, 5 May the R.S.L. Pairs will be played. This is always a fun day and we are sponsored by the R.S.L. Next week I will have more on these events.
