Children’s safety is foremost POLICE have told News Of The Area they are becoming more and more frustrated with the flouting of parking laws at within school zones. The main cause of concern is the continual stopping of parents in the no stopping zone when dropping off children at the front of the school. Senior Constable Trevor McLeod said disregarding the parking laws at the school puts every child’s safety at risk. “The crossing and no stopping areas are designed to allow children to arrive at school safely,” he said. “It would appear that previous warnings have not been heeded and stronger measures are considered.” Snr Constable McLeod said the penalty for stopping in a no stopping area in a school

zone carries a fine of $319. A fine of $425 applies when stopping on or near a children’s crossing in a school zone. Unlike other parking fines, these two offences also have a two demerit point allocation attached. Bulahdelah Central School Principal Mr Don Hudson encourages parents to follow the laws regarding the no stopping and school crossing zones at all times. “We have a concern for the safety and wellbeing of our students and that’s why the zones are in place,” Mr Hudson said. “We need all people to observe and respect the parking laws.” The no stopping zones and crossing areas at the school are well-marked.

Schools welcome the Tour de Cure By Daniel SAHYOUN

OVER 220 cyclists and support crew pedalled into the local area last week as part of the annual Tour de Cure charity ride. Now in its tenth year, the ride retraced the inaugural route from Brisbane to

Sydney, travelling 1,518km over 10 days and raising more than $2 million to help fund Australian cancer research. The cyclists received a noisy welcome at Bulahdelah Central and Tea Gardens Primary Schools where the riders delivered

a ‘BE FIT, BE HEALTHY, BE HAPPY’ presentation aimed at encouraging cancer prevention behaviours. Students at each school decorated a helmet which they presented to the cyclists to be displayed in a Tour-inspired art exhibition at Tour de Cure functions

later in the year. The cyclists attended a community dinner at Hawks Nest Golf Club on Friday night where the Tour de Cure team presented a cheque for $10,000 to the Cancer Council.

Hairspray for Tahlia

HAWKS Nest teen Tahlia Walton said she is “very excited” to have landed herself a role in a professional production of Hairspray, the Big Fat Arena Spectacular. The 14-year-old Medowie Christian School student will take to the stage alongside singer Christine Anu and House Husbands’ actor Tim Campbell at Newcastle Entertainment Centre in July. Tahlia said she is looking forward to the upcoming performances where she will feature as a dancer and singer. “I’m very happy about being selected and it will be a lot of fun learning the routines,” she said. “I really enjoy performing and it will be a good experience in front of so many people.” Tahlia auditioned alongside hundreds q HAIRSPRAY: Talented of other young hopefuls in performer Tahlia Walton is December last year and said she excited to be appearing in had a nervous wait to see if she was her first professional stage offered a place. production. “We had to do a choreographed Photo: So Lovely dance in front of the judges and Photography, Medowie. there were a lot of people trying

Tahlia attended a boot camp a few weeks ago where she learnt the dances and songs for the show. She will also be involved in intensive rehearsals during the July School Holidays. The talented all-round performer has been dancing since she was four-years old. She is also studying drama and is training for the Regional Cheerleading Championships to be held later this year. With an obvious passion for dance, Tahlia said she intends to continue performing long after her involvement in Hairspray. “I’m certainly going to keep dancing and performing in concerts,” she said. “I liked seeing Aussies dancing at Universal Studios in Singapore and would love to perform in many more professional productions.” Tickets for Hairspray, the Big Fat Arena Spectacular can be purchased from Ticketek.

Awarded as Champion School By Daniel SAHYOUN

BULAHDELAH Central School has been awarded the title of Champion School at the MidCoast Science and Engineering Challenge in Taree.

Showing impressive innovation and problem-solving skills, the Year 5 and 6 students claimed the win ahead of five other participating schools. The competition involved a day of hands-on challenges

LABOUR candidate for Lyne has said Patients across the entire community, will be slugged with a GP co-payment by stealth due to the Turnbull Government’s decision to freeze the Medicare rebate. Peter Alley, Country Labor Candidate for Lyne told News Of The Area, “From July 1, Australians will be forced to reach for the credit card rather than their Medicare card when they visit the GP. “The deep $650 million cut to health confirmed in last night’s budget also means the cost of prescriptions will rise by $5. Routine pregnancy tests, blood tests, pathology, pap smears, X-rays and MRIs will also attract a higher cost,” he said. “Last weeks election budget was all about the re-election of

Malcolm Turnbull’s Government. It had nothing to do with healthcare and hospitals in Wauchope, Taree, Forster/Tuncurry, Gloucester or the Dungog community,” Mr Alley said. “Under this budget, pregnant women and people with lifethreatening illness will feel the shock of unexpected, higher charges when they least expect it, at the doctor’s surgery.” Federal Member for Lyne Dr David Gillespie said more funding for aged care continued to provide the elderly with home care and residential care options while also providing a major boost to local employment. “Aged care has increased over the past 2½ years from $90-million a year to $105-million a year and thanks to the sustainable reforms

designed to inform and inspire students about careers in Science and Engineering. The students created towers, built bridges, constructed transportation vehicles and mastered

electronics during the competition. Year 5 student Maddi Tassell was part of the winning bridge construction team and said many different skills were needed to successfully build a solid bridge. “The day taught us how to design, construct and test models for strength,” she said. “I learnt that a bridge will not stand up without bottom support and it will break if it doesn’t have any support at all.” Organising Teacher Mrs Sonia McDonald said she was very pleased with the win by her students with the competition showing the budding Engineers how exciting design and construction can be. “The students were given a limited range of resources to construct the strongest model that they could produce,” Mrs McDonald said. “Points were awarded for building the most effective models using the least amount of resources.” Mrs McDonald said this also taught the students about sustainability and conservation. Sponsored by Mid-Coast Water, the competition was arranged by the Science and Engineering Faculties at the University Of Newcastle with Zone Four Rotary Clubs playing a lead role in the organisation.

Budget now means game on announced as part of this budget, our aged care sector will continue to grow and remain strong as we invest an extra $249-million to improve the aged care sector,” Dr Gillespie said. Dr Gillespie said this Budget is a real game changer for employment and for small business. “The Coalition Government would invest in a new $840-million Youth Employment Package including a Youth Bonus wage subsidy to give business stronger incentives and greater flexibility in hiring job seekers under the age of 25 years including subsidies of between $6,500 and $10,000.” “I have visited and spoken to many small business owners in my electorate and listened to some of their ideas about how

we might encourage and help them improve and expand their businesses and employ more people,” Dr Gillespie said. “These wage subsidies will create a strong incentive for employers to consider hiring unemployed youth as well as encouraging and supporting self-employment and entrepreneurship among young people.” “This is a budget that also provides modest tax cuts, delivers increases in funding for education and health – while also getting the budget deficit under control and identifying a pathway back to repay Labor’s debt. Dr Gillespie said the government would be combating tax avoidance, including multinational tax avoidance.

What happens to your ‘online’ accounts when you die? It can be distressing to think about “living on” in Facebook, for example, but it can be a source of comfort for your family. Providers of digital services are sensitive about their legal responsibility to their members. Google, for example, explains that “[u]sers have a strong and reasonable expectation of privacy and security when using Google’s products. We believe that the trust placed in us by our users requires us to make sure that their information is safe, even in the event of their death.” Google give users the option to have their account disabled if it has not been used for a certain period of time and to appoint a “trusted” advisor who can gain access to the account or

only certain parts of it, such as emails. Facebook offers a “memorialisation” service which continues to display parts of the site. Facebook also has a “legacy” function. Users can nominate in their lifetime who can access the site after their death and also the level of access. Some privileges die with you. Under the terms and conditions of your Flybuys account, for example, your points cannot be transferred on your death. However, Paypal accounts and similar may have credits stored in your name. It might breach security terms and conditions to reveal your password to your family now. However, the solicitors who hold your Will could help ensure that your Executors can access your passwords on your passing.

In between filming, James was happy to spend his time talking with community members with many jumping at the opportunity to be photographed with the television personality. James, along with fellow Sunrise

PLANNING to meet this week, Great Lakes Council’s Development Control Unit will look to make a decision relating to the construction of the Digital TV Transmission Tower in Bulahdelah. A report prepared by Council in relation to the Development Application (DA) for the tower will be presented at the meeting on Thursday 12 May with a recommendation for approval. The proposed 30 metre tower to accommodate the required antennas is to be located on the MidCoast Water Reservoir site at the

foot of Alum Mountain. This will allow the site to receive TV signals from Cabbage Tree Mountain and Mount Sugarloaf and retransmit them into the Bulahdelah community to enable free-to-air digital television. The application was notified for public comment and as a result one submission was received. The submission outlined concerns relating to the disruption of views of the mountain and the inability of the signal to cover the entire town from the intended site. In response, the Council report states the tower is

considered to be highly transparent providing a minimum visual structure. It was also noted there was no suitable alternate location for the tower due to the lower elevation of other sites. With all aspects of the DA considered, the report recommends “that Development Application No. 378/2016 for the installation of a Digital TV transmission tower on Lot 200 DP 1158752, 14-16 Bulahdelah Way, Bulahdelah be approved.” The entire report can be viewed on Great Lakes Council webpage.

A MOTOR vehicle collided with a parked 4WD (with a boat and boat trailer attached) on Myall Street Tea Gardens in early April. The 19-year-old male driver from Hawks Nest had his licence suspended on the spot and was issued with a court notice for a mid-range drink-driving offence. The police report states the male driver was breath

tested at the site and returned a positive reading for alcohol. As a holder of a provisional licence, the male driver is restricted to a zero alcohol level. The driver was placed under arrest and conveyed to Tea Gardens Police Station for the purpose of a breath analysis where he returned a mid-range reading of 0.092. The driver was also issued

with an infringement notice for breaching a condition of his licence. At the time of the collision, the driver was carrying two passengers under the age of 21. A provisional licence holder under the age of 25 is not permitted to drive a vehicle with more than one passenger under 21 years between 11pm and 5am.

Impacts of invasive plants GREAT Lakes Council hosted an intriguing “Weed Wine and Dine” evening in Hawks Nest last week, attracting nearly 50 Hawks Nest homeowners who heard about the environmental impacts of invasive plants. Held at the Hawks Nest Community Hall, the evening included brief talks from National Parks and Wildlife Service Ranger Fiona Miller; Council’s Senior Ecologist, Mat Bell; Noxious and Environmental Weeds Coordinator Terry Inkson; Bushcare/Coastal Catchment Support Officer Isabelle Strachan and Environmental Officer Helen Kemp.

The talks covered the classification and prioritisation of different weeds, the ecology of the Great Lakes area, the ongoing works undertaken by Council and National Parks to curb the threat of invasive plants, the results of the recent private property inspections and the importance of residents coming on board with this issue. After the talks, attendees stuck around to enjoy the finger food, seek personal advice from Council and NPWS staff and enjoy great conversation with their neighbours. After learning about the

impact private properties can have on the local environment, 28 attendees signed “Bushland Friendly Garden” pledges, making a commitment to: remove all noxious weeds as soon as they appear; control all environmental weeds; plant local natives when they can; and not dump any garden waste in bushland. The event was extremely well received and Council got a lot of great feedback, such as “Wonderful presenters, each very knowledgeable and passionate about their area of expertise - shows how well q SPEAKING: Terry Inkson, GLC’s Noxious and Environmental Weeds Coordinator co-ordinated efforts are.” giving a presentation on Council’s ongoing work to protect the area’s ecological and agricultural assets from the threat of invasive plants.

THE fine for not picking up dog poo is $275 - which should be reason enough for dog owners to ensure they pick up after their pet in public places, says Great Lakes Council, not to mention the nasty surprise of stepping in a mess left by a dog. “Council has placed 29 dog poo bag dispensers throughout the Great Lakes area for the convenience of dog walkers to assist with the collection of dog poo,” said Council’s Manager of Waste, Health and Regulatory Services, Mr John Cavanagh. “Council spends over $6,000 annually on purchasing the biodegradable bags to restock the dispensers, but this offsets large scale environmental damage to our waterways and important industries for local economy like tourism and aquaculture,” said Mr Cavanagh. Uncollected dog poo washes into drains and eventually ends up in our waterways, adding nutrients to our natural lakes and rivers. These nutrients cause algal blooms and alter the chemical balance of the water, which in turn causes pollution and destroys the habitat for marine animals. Volunteers across the Great Lakes do a mighty job in helping Council maintain the off-leash areas and restock the dispensers. “We are all very grateful to our volunteers and we hope that dog walkers will respect them and their work by q remembering - do it, bag it, bin it.”

NSW Go Fishing Day in October

BAG IT: Ranger Steve Burgess refills the doo poo bags dispenser.

MEMBER for Myall Lakes Stephen Bromhead is urging recreational fishing clubs and community organisations across the region to apply for grants to help run fishing activities in Myall Lakes on the second annual NSW Go Fishing Day, to be held on 16 October 2016. Mr Bromhead said recreational fishing is one of the most popular activities in Myall Lakes. “There are currently around 850,000 people who love wetting a line each year in NSW and NSW Go Fishing Day provides another opportunity to promote fishing as an enjoyable part of our lifestyle in the Myall Lakes,” Mr Bromhead said. “The fishing tourism sector also brings millions of dollars to the Manning and Great Lakes each year, supporting our communities and hosting a NSW Go Fishing Day event would be a massive boost. “Fishing clubs and community organisations are encouraged to apply for grants of up to $2,000 to run fishing activities on NSW Go Fishing Day, such as casting and fishing workshops, information sessions and other fishing activities including fishing gear,

bait, food and drinks, equipment hire, hire or chartering of specialist fishing services. “Activities to restore fish habitat on the day are also eligible, such as replanting river and creek banks. “The activities must be scheduled to occur on the 16th October 2016.” The inaugural NSW Go Fishing Day was held last December and was a huge success with thousands of people visiting six regional locations where a range of fun filled fishing activities took place. Activities at various locations across NSW will include free ‘try fishing’ sessions for beginners, adults and children (five years and older), goodie bags with lots of ‘fishy’ giveaways, casting competitions and expert advice from DPI Fisheries staff. The 2016 NSW Go Fishing Day will also coincide with the first–ever National Fishing Day being coordinated by the Australian Fishing Trade Association. For more information or to get involved, fishing clubs can fill out the application form, which is available at www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/ fisheries.

I Can’t Thank Enough Thursday

Dear News Of The Area,

IN the early hours of Sunday May 8, I woke up with severe burning pains in my chest and was really in a panic. I asked my husband to ring 000 and ask for an ambulance. Within 10 minutes of our call the ambulance arrived and they were two of our local ambulance officers Ray & Steve. I cannot thank them enough for their re-assurance that I would be

alright after conducting some tests. On Monday afternoon I received a phone call from Steve asking how I was going, I told him I had been to my doctor that morning and some changes to my medication were being made. I will never be able to thank Ray and Steve enough but I do know that the ambulance service we have here in TG/HN is the best.

More phone scamming Dear News Of The Area, I WRITE to warn all readers of a current scam that is doing the rounds in this area. You will receive a phone call/email from individuals perporting to be Officers of The Australian Taxation Office, advising you that a court order has been issued for your arrest, and the payment of a significant fine, [many thousands of dollars] is overdue. Unless you follow

the directions that the caller imposes, and you pay the fine within 1.5 hours, members of the Federal Police will be on your doorstep, and arrest you. You are advised to speak to no-one as your telephone is “bugged” and you will be asked to admit that you have intentionally erred, and will pay the monies requested. The advice you will receive is to pay at any Woolworths store by purchasing ITunes cards in $500

denominations. Don’t do it! Contact the Police immediately. These scammers are very convincing, and many are being caught so as to “avoid” gaol. My friends, beware, there is little the police can do if you pay. Tell the caller to send the police, you know this call is a scam, and you can confidently assure them, the police know who you are. National Volunteer Week Dear News Of The Area,

VOLUNTEERS make Australia a better and more caring place to live. This week is National Volunteer Week (9-15 May) and we want to thank all volunteers for everything they do. Each year across Australia more than 6 million volunteers not only bring happiness to the people and communities

they help, but they get to also experience the joy of helping others. And the benefits of volunteering go much further than that. Volunteers add value to our communities by building trust, relationships and connections between people. Plus they boost social engagement and help communities to share skills and resources.

Simply put, volunteers make our communities stronger and more resilient. There are more than 20,000 Red Cross volunteers in Australia. They support local communities, they help the children of refugees with their homework, they are there in times of disaster both in Australia and overseas, they take the time to talk to those who are lonely

every day, and many other activities. It is all about people helping people in very practical ways. Thank you to all volunteers – wherever you are and no matter who you volunteer for – your generosity creates a more supportive, connected, inclusive and happier Australia. Dear News Of The Area, On 28 April Thursday Walkers visited Ash Island which has an interesting past. In the 1860’s the area was cleared and supported 17 dairies but due to the frequent floods they were abandoned by the 1960’s. Ash Island is now part of Hunter Wetlands National Park. It is a Ramsar wetlands site of international importance. We started our walk in the 1890’s schoolmaster’s house, now an information centre. We were advised to avoid the main roads due to trucks working. This meant we saw an entirely different section than on previous visits. Those of us who did the longer ten kilometre trail, found puddle jumping a fun exercise in one section and climbing a gate at another. We enjoyed wandering around the Community Garden where volunteers had a large variety of fruit and vegetables growing well and where we had our picnic lunch. This Thursday we set off to Piper’s Creek which runs into the Myall River. A short walk from the road saw us viewing the creek. We traversed, then followed a fire trail which runs parallel to the road and led us to our first planned stop, a pleasant water hole complete with reeds and water lilies. It was hidden away and we who were leading were as usual deep in conversation and went right by. Ray caught our attention and we were soon settled around the water enjoying our break. This was one of a chain of waterholes created when Mineral Deposits dredged for rutile and zircon. Perfect hiking weather and a five kilometre walk had us feeling good. Our dedicated leader Cherry, has just completed a first aid course and was pleased we did not put her to the test. Our group of 33 were asked for their opinion. Should the mural on the wall facing ANZAC park be replaced? The unanimous reply was no, let it be! Anne Johnson Thursday Walkers c

The original building was a modest single-storey cottage, but in 1833, Captain Sir Edward Parry had the cottage renovated and extended to accommodate his family, incorporating a second storey and attached servant’s quarters. 4 MAY: A big field of 60 bowlers participated in the Nominated Triples competition today playing in near perfect conditions. Both greens were in use with the synthetic running quite quickly and the grass much slower at about 12-13 seconds. Big scores were the order of the day. Must have been some one-sided games played! The winning team on a mammoth +45 were; Henk Faber, Col Amos and David Rimmer. Well done! In second place on a creditable +33 were; Neil Kibble, Doug Naylor and John Yabsley. 6 May: Friday Jackpot Pairs today competed in beautiful autumn weather with 16 bowlers taking part. The winners on +20, were; Gary Wynne and Tony Attard. Daylight was second, but on +6 were; Barry Goode and Henk Faber. The jackpot was not won with the prize pool for 13 May now totalling $240.00. Worth winning! 7 May: Round 9 of the Newcastle District Pennant competition was played today with all the Mighty Pelican Pest

Control sides taking part. Both Grades 3 and 7 played at home with some great results. Grade 3 played Adamstown on the synthetic green, no doubt not to their liking, and scored two nice wins. Ben Brown’s team winning by 5 shots 23-18 and Steve Pell’s four on cruise-control with an emphatic 29-15 victory. The remaining four were beaten by 10 shots, but the damage was done, Tea Gardens winning the Master Board 6556. Great win! Grade 7 also elected to play their nemesis, Nelson Bay, on the synthetic green with all three teams recording wins. The Max Stephens’ team were dominant in their game winning easily 33-7. The Noel Jackson four had a tougher encounter but prevailed to win 25-23, and the Neville Vaughn combination completed the rout, winning by 5 shots, 25-20. The Master Board result; Tea Gardens 83 Nelson Bay 50. Go the mighty Sevens! Away from home the results were disappointing. Medium to slow grass greens seem to be our Achilles heel. The Grade 4 played at Mayfield and was outplayed with all teams losing. Danny Johnson’s four came close to winning going down by just 3 shots 15-18.

Myall Coast

RUGBY UNION

The remaining sides took a hammering. The final score 3283 to Mayfield. The Grade 6 side were confident that they could overcome Bar Beach at Bar Beach but it was not to be. The Ron Webster team had a good win 22-16, with John Younghusband mentioned as winning the “Dolphin Medal” for the second week in a row. Well done again John! The Dave Austin combination set out with a handy lead but then dropped a 7 on the 10th end against the run of play. They just could not recover and went down 17-25. The remaining four were in all sorts of trouble and just could not score until the 12th end, by which time it was game, set and match! Bar Beach won the Master Board 69-46. In the Pennant competition, the mighty Sevens still have a chance to win their section with two home games yet to be played. The remaining sides have one game to play but will bow out until next season. In other news, the Club “Blue Ribbon” event, the Club Major Singles is scheduled to commence with the first half of the draw competing on Sunday 5 June and the second half on Saturday 18 June. Entries are being received now and will close on Monday 30 May.

which we have been blessed to stop off at on our ride to cure cancer,” Drew told News Of The Area. CONTINUED Page 8

THE Tea Gardens Hawks were outclassed by an unbeaten Windale Eagles outfit on Sunday. Installed as early premiership favouites, Windale capitalized on unforced errors from the Hawks to lead by 24 points to nil at half time. Brooke Roach asked his players to concentrate on completing sets in the second half. “We have defended most of the first half, and with a limited forwards bench, we are reacting to fatigue.” A concentrated effort in the second half, limited Windale’s role on. Ben Mossop and Brooke Roach scored tries in the second half, with Billy Greentree converting one. Final score was 38 points to 10. Best in defence was Carl Williams, who worked hard to support his forwards. Best attack was awarded to Ben Mossop, who took the ball up all day. Billy Greentree was the supporter’s choice. Carl Williams received points in the referee’s best and fairest. The Player of the Round was

shared by Carl Williams and Billy Greentree. The Hawks travel to Newcastle on Saturday to play University at 3pm. On Saturday the Myall River “Country Club” 13’s defeated Merriwa by 50 points to 10.

Dylan Long and Mitch Markham were strong up front. Halves Mitchell Barr and Angus Devon enjoyed the space created by their forwards. Centre Nathan Katz was solid in defence, and Paddy Nickle kept busy all day. The “JR Richards” 15’s were defeated by Waratah Mayfield by 30 points to 16. Unforced errors from Myall River gave Waratah a platform to build on. Rex Shetlon was a standout in attack and defence, while Will Smith never stopped working. Tommy Tukana added impact to the backline from fullback. Jreaytaine Davis was strong in the centres. Reefe Leslie continues to build his game with a non-stop effort. Bradley Marshall was voted “players player” narrowly from Jyson Wolfram.
