POST:

BP Salt Ash are giving away a $1400 flight voucher to a lucky loyalty card member. The independently owned service station and mini supermarket have created the club to encourage loyal customers to shop local. Steven Nicholson, the store manager told News Of The Area, “The loyalty club is free and easy to join and is a great way to reward our loyal customers.” “The current flight voucher promotion is drawn on the first of July, so we encourage people to sign up and enter the competition,” he said. The flight voucher can be won by scanning your loyalty card during any transaction and placing the receipt in the competition box. This is situated at the end of the counter, near the exit. The club has been running for over a year, with a lucky local recently winning a $200 store voucher.

The paper will distribute 2,000 copies every week, saturating, Williamtown, Salt Ash, Twelve Mile Creek, Ferodale and Medowie. This modern-media voice will be working hard for the community on three levels: In Print; Within the Social Media news; And online with a state-of-the-art News media website. NewsOfTheArea. com.au The printed publication and the social media news will be very “hyperlocal”, while the website will connect the area to the outside world. Ensuring our local voice is heard on a bigger scale. For some time, advertising within print media has been way too expensive and quickly becoming out-of-reach for the local business owner.

Advertising, now with News Of The Area has never been as affordable, useful and reliable for all small business. Even the part-time home-based business can set up a good annual marketing plan that they can be confident reaches their real customer – the locals here! It was said by numerous people while News Of The Area were initially talking to businesses (about the paper), that, “Why would a hairdresser in Medowie want to talk to people who live in Fingal Bay?”, “Why should a butcher in Salt Ash pay for marketing to the masses of people outside where their customer base is? Will someone drive from Seaham to Salt Ash for a steak?” Maybe? The rates are not only unexpectedly low with this new paper, but businesses actually receive advertising over all three of our media platforms (For the

While the large media companies are reducing in revenues and staff by sending work offshore, News Of The Area have found three great writers – just around the corner. We have two reporters writing from Medowie and one, in her second year at Uni (Journalism), who lives at Salt Ash. Great local talent and passionate about the area no doubt. Within this edition you’ll find our contact info. In future edition we we will publish a story on them. Send us your stories, tips, news, letters-to-editor, sport results and pics. We want to tell the community your stories and we also want to fight local issues affecting the area. That’s it about us. From now in it’s all about YOU! Medowie News Of The Area.

Alone with bike & pool of blood

News Of The Area Brigade take out bush fire

By Jenny BAXTER ALL too often the everyday, routine schedule can lead to a kind of complacency. Unfortunately, at times, it takes a serious incident to bring a sense of appreciation and grounding back into life. For one local Medowie family, this experience recently became all too real. Wayne Ralphs is a Fly In, Fly Out general services operator at Devil Creek Gas Plant, near Karratha in Western Australia. Husband and father of three, Ralphs, began 25 May, in the same way he often does, hitting the mountain bike trails that surround the area. This one particular day, things didn’t end the way they usually do. In fact, for Ralphs, they almost ended altogether. A seemingly innocuous fall from his bike resulted in him almost losing his life. As Ralphs fell, his leg was impaled by the inch-thick handlebar, causing damage to the femoral artery, resulting in serious blood loss. Doctors have told Ralphs that had the wound occurred a few millimetres along, paramedics would have most likely found him dead at the scene. At first Ralphs didn’t notice he was seriously injured, until he noticed a large pool of blood on his cycle pants. It was at this point his first aid

q

training, and experience as part of the Emergency Response Team at the gas plant, kicked in. Ralphs said, “I knew I needed to keep compression on the wound, but that I needed to get somewhere I could be found. “I was on my own, so I knew no one would know where to find me.” Remaining calm, he called Triple

Zero and began making his way 1.5km to the nearest access point for an ambulance to collect him. Nearing the road, and having dragged his bike with him to lean on, Ralphs experienced a severe shock reaction. Struggling to breathe and covered in sweat and blood, Ralphs contemplated that he may not actually

make it. Despite the ambulance originally travelling past, having not seen him, he was finally recovered and taken to John Hunter Hospital. Although not deterred from riding in the future, Ralphs has declared he will not ride alone again. He also credits his first aid training to saving his life.

RURAL fire brigade crews from Medowie were busy last Friday after a call-out to a fire around the Hunter Water land on Banjo Trail, off Ringwood Road Medowie. At around 9:15pm Friday 27 May, two of the Medowie Rural Fire Brigade trucks were on the scene. They had the blaze under control with some assistance of the Raymond Terrace RFS. Captain Andrew Collins from the Medowie Rural Fire Brigade told News Of The Area, ”The blaze was reignited from an earlier fire of a vehicle that had been set alight” “It is believed the vehicle was stolen.” “It reignited because of the high winds we are experiencing presently,” he said. Captain Collins said, “A couple of hectares were alight, but it was a relative easily manageable fire for us, despite the winds.” With the News Of The Area’s first edition coming out next week Mr Collins was also aware of the new local media, servicing Medowie and surrounding areas. “Yes, I’ve heard of you. I’ve seen the news stands around town – fantastic for Medowie.” News Of The Area thanks Captain Andrew Collins for his kind words and we also thank the Medowie RFB for a great job last Friday night.

Council of choice Employer of the Year, must mean something PORT Stephens Council has been recognised, once again, by taking out the Employer of the Year title at the annual Career Development Association of Australia awards. At a gala event held in Melbourne yesterday evening, Council’s win came on the back of the implementation of a unique Career Development Program across the organisation. The program is part of Council’s Talent Management Strategy and provides staff with a range of assessment tools and support to establish career directions.

General Manager, Wayne Wallis said that the career development program was about creating an environment where continuous learning is valued. “We realised that our ability to attract, engage, develop and retain key staff was critical to our ongoing success and we wanted a workplace that would foster those ideals,” Mr Wallis said. “The program is also about empowering our staff to take ownership over their career development - helping them to identify their aspirations, recognise their strengths and

develop plans to enable better performance and growth.” The program has been in place since 2014 and Mr Wallis said they have seen some great individual successes as well as a marked change in attitude to career development across the organisation. “This award is a testament to the work of our Career Development Manager Anne Schmarr as well as our Organisation Development Team,” Mr Wallis said. “It’s wonderful to once again be recognised as a leader in this area and ultimately as an employer of choice,” he said.

Support for disability ENDEVOUR Foundation has committed to providing continuity of support for people with a disability in Port Stephens as the area prepares to welcome the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). Local provider, Disability Services Port Stephens, despite a superb 25-year track record, had sought a larger organisation to provide greater stability and continue supporting people with a disability to live their

best life under the NDIS. Endeavour Foundation CEO, Andrew Donne, said that he appreciated the trust that had been placed in his organisation by the Port Stephens community. “It’s an exciting time to be in our sector, with great change and opportunity ahead,” he said. “We are stronger together – able to provide a greater range of community services for people with a disability,

while remaining sustainable in an increasingly competitive and challenging environment.” Mr Donne told News Of The Area, “The NDIS will become available in Port Stephens from 1 July this year, so there isn’t a moment to lose.” Disability Services Port Stephens Inc (DSPSI) provides community access, in home support, respite and supported holidays to 55 people with a disability in Port Stephens, New South Wales.

It will be a voice for locals

Washington is in support Dear News Of The Area,

I AM delighted to support a new local newspaper for the residents of the Medowie, Salt Ash and the surrounding area. Our little patch of paradise is full of special stories and locally organised events which deserve to be shared. In a community like ours, where we frequently have new families arriving, a local voice is important. The sharing of stories and information can only serve to strengthen our community. I commend the incoming staff of the Medowie News Of The Area for taking up the task of reporting on the local events which play such an important

q MAYOR: Bruce MacKenzie Dear News of the Area, CONGRATULATIONS to the team at Medowie News Of The Area for bringing this exciting new venture to the communities of Medowie, Williamtown, Salt Ash and surrounds. I have no doubt this publication will be a wonderful asset for the Medowie area and surrounding neighbourhoods. It’s an exciting time for Medowie - a key growth area of the Port Stephens region, with new commercial and residential development, more jobs and a flourishing local economy. With its focus on local issues, I am sure this publication will prove to be more than just a newspaper, it will be a forum for residents to share their views and connect with their neighbours. It’s great to see Medowie News Of The Area leading the way, recognising the potential of this wonderful community and coming on board to tell the many exciting stories that lay ahead. Where are they at?

Dear Community,

Making a stand for our area Dear News of the Area, THE newsstands look brilliant! Congratulations on all the hard work that has been put in so far.

Looking forward to reading the first edition! Good luck, hope it's a huge success. Wendy Parsons

Dear News Of The Area, WHERE can we pickup a copy of this paper? Leander Slade

BY now so many of the local residents would have at least heard a whisper of the new local paper coming to Medowie, Salt Ash, Williamtown and surrounding proximity. There are eight of these newstands within the Medowie business centre, as well as Pacific Dunes Golf Club. There are three within the ‘Paul’s Corner’ hub at Salt Ash and two at Williamtown - McDonalds and Fighterworld. We are presently looking to have them located at the Airport and Hotel. Is decision a delay or serious

Dear News Of The Area,

PORT Stephens Council is on the cusp of dramatic changes to its electorate status as we head towards a merger which I predict will be with Newcastle City Council. Currently there is a merger review between Dungog and Port Stephens Councils but plenty of evidence to show that this is a delay rather than a serious alternative based on the Federal election attempting to minimise voter backlash. We will know the amalgamation lottery result in a little over a month and then find out if current NCC and

Letters

PSC Councilors will be offered roles on an interim advisory panel with a new Council. The joint Council will be headed up by an administrator for as long as 14 months. While there is much disquiet in the Port Stephens community about merging with Newcastle much of this is based on fear that Newcastle is financially bereft and dysfunctional, the facts don’t show this at all and Newcastle Council is more concerned that it will have to redirect funds for road and drainage upgrades in Port Stephens to meet current standards. I predict in a few short years

dramatically larger numbers of ratepayers and residents to represent. Current stipend, which is very modest the only positive to assist these Councilors will be slight raise in pay when they move to a new status funding level with larger council. Our future is currently in the hands of the Minster for Local Government and we await his response to a decision that I believe was made as long as twelve months ago. Councilor Geoff Dingle Medowie

Owner opts for tree change By Heather SHARP MEDOWIE has secured another new eating-out option with the 18 May opening of Sportz Café. Operator Carol Saunders has been delighted with the welcome the café has received so far, telling News Of The Area, “The Medowie community has been very supportive.” Moving from Sydney to operate the business, Ms Saunders, a former caterer has opted for a tree change in coming to Medowie. She was attracted to the community-mindedness of Medowie locals, having visited the town many times over the past 12 years, deciding to settle permanently in order to start

up Sportz Café. Currently open 7 days, 7am-4pm weekdays and 8am-3pm on weekends, once the attached gym opens on 15 June, hours will be extended to meet customer demand. Located at 58 Ferodale Road (next to Wirreanda Public School), and occupying part of the soon to be opened Gym, Sportz Café has made a commitment to locally-sourced produce. Ms Saunders told News Of The Area, “Employing local people is important to us, as is focusing on local suppliers.” The menu choice is varied, offering freshly made food, including chicken and fish crumbed and battered onpremises, gluten free options,

cupcakes made locally by Cake Crime. Customers are also able to customise their orders to their taste, and the crème de la crème of café treats, scooped ice-cream. “The kids love their icecreams in the afternoon,” Ms Saunders said. “Already, there is a local following of students buying this delicious treat after school.” The café, part of the new exciting sports development set on 6 acres, has undergone a complete refurbishment, ready to serve the Medowie community. q CAFE: Beth MacDougall, experienced in hospitality, working at Sportz Café.

Continued concern for contamination By Simone JOHNSON

MANY residents in the ‘red zone’ of the Williamtown contamination scandal have been left without the option to sell. Financial institutions have advised real estate valuers that they will not be lending against these properties until they have more information

on the issue. This applies regardless of whether the property has been cleared of contamination or is on town water. John Birrell from Tony Cant real estate told News Of The Area, “Due to the risk factors involved with a property situated within the contamination zone, most

banks are not lending against these properties.” “There are a majority of valuers receiving instructions from banks to not attend property valuations,” he said. Properties within the contamination zone have been marked on valuers reports, with financial institutions having the final say.

Banks are being extremely cautious as there is very minimal information surrounding property value. A recent sale within the Williamtown area fell through after contracts were issued as professionals refused to do a registered valuation. This created concern for both the buyer and bank as

they could not guarantee whether they would get their money back if they were to sell. Mr Birrell said, “All other confidence in the market is definitely subdued as there merely isn’t enough clarity or information about the contamination issues.” Until more information

Please support the advertisers within the Medowie News Of The Area as they are bringing you your local news each week.

on the issue is made available, it is unlikely that financial institutions’ stance on the situation will change. If you would like to receive recent updates on the contamination problem or to voice your concerns visit ‘Salt Ash Community First’ on Facebook.

GOOD FRIENDS: Neighbours who look out for each other and who regularly catch up together.

This is where we live, where we love By Jenny BAXTER LIVING in a small town has a wide range of benefits for so many people. Registering high on most people’s ‘Benefits’ list would have to be ‘great neighours’.

The fact Medowie fits this bill perfectly is regularly highlighted in many ways. Only recently, on returning from doing the school drop off run, I pulled in the driveway to discover our neighbour had mowed our front

lawn for us. As I thanked her for her generosity, Tracy replied, “I know how time poor you guys are, it’s just one way I could help you out.” Spurred on to discover just what it is that makes Medowie such a great

one driveway, their homes all sharing the end of the same cul-de-sac. The kids played handball in the driveway, which quickly drew in the adults as well. “We first met through the kids,” Nicole said. “They would all get together out in the street to play. “We naturally followed them out, and our friendships have grown from there.” “We help each other out with babysitting and carpooling, when we’ve run out of pasta sauce in the middle of cooking, that kind of thing,” added Sue. “We love sharing home grown produce too,” Lisa said. “Fresh eggs from the chooks are the most popular at the moment.” The group agreed that there’s always an impromptu barbeque or sleepover happening. They even all play in a mixed touch football team together. These friendly neighbours value helping each other out in other ways too. Matt’s a landscaper, Steve’s an autoelectrician, Clint is a diesel mechanic, fitter and welder. Janeter proudly shares, “We’ve all got our various skills and tools we use to help each other out with. It’s great.” “We all share similar values,” Sue told News Of The Area. “We are all striving for the same thing.” It’s clear these really are neighbours who’ve become good friends.

WHILE many of us count down the days until the biggest sporting event of the year kicks off, the Olympic Games in Rio, for some Australian athletes, their major event has already been run and won. Local Medowie resident, Ade Rolfe, is one such athlete who has just competed at the games of his life. Ade was a member of the Australian team that recently returned from the Invictus Games in Orlando, USA. Made famous through the games’ ambassador, Prince Harry, the Invictus Games were established to give Service men and women, who have been wounded, injured or sick, an opportunity to compete in a variety of sporting events, similar to the Paralympics.

NewsOfTheArea.com.au

Men and Women from across the world take part in the competition, held annually in various locations across the globe. A member of the Royal Australian Air Force, based in Williamtown, Rolfe represented his adopted country in a number of sports, from swimming and athletics, to wheelchair rugby and floor volleyball. Originally from England, where he served in the British Royal Air Force and having been deployed several times to Afghanistan and Iraq, Rolfe migrated to Australia six years ago. Rolfe said he was motivated to join the Australian Invictus Games Team after missing out on the 2014 games in London. He took part in the USA

Games during 2015 and 2016 to gain experience for these world games. When asked what the greatest highlights were for him during these recent games, Rolfe told News Of The Area, “Seeing my team mates who were worse off than me compete and achieve medals and personal bests,” gave him the greatest satisfaction. “It was great just sharing this experience together,” he said. So where to now for Rolfe? “Looking at how infant our teams were in some sports, we now want to train hard at our local clubs then come together as a stronger Australian team and be a force to be reckoned with in Toronto,” Mr Rolfe said. The next Invictus Games will be held in September 2017, in Toronto, Canada.
