Fractured pylon has caused wharf to slump Repairs to be done late Jan ’16
GREAT Lakes Council is disappointed to find major damage has occurred to the wharf and associated pontoon adjacent to the Tea Gardens boat ramp. “We recently discovered that one of the pylons has been fractured and this in turn is causing the structure to slump and is no longer safe to use. How the pylon became damaged is not known,” said Council’s Manager of Parks and Recreation, Mr Andrew Staniland.
“Most disappointing is that we will be forced to close the wharf until a contractor is available to undertake repairs, which will not occur until late January.” “We apologise to the Tea Gardens - Hawks Nest community and we realise the inconvenience this will cause during the busy summer holiday season, but unfortunately we cannot engage a CONTINUED Page 3

SCHOOL: The class of 1965 at Bulahdelah Central School. They were the first class to complete Form 4.
Fiftieth year reunion for Class Of ‘65 By Rachel REITSMA
BULAHDELAH Central School has been around for over 100 years but it was a great
experience for the students who attended the school over 50 years ago to reunite and share experiences. The class of 1965
reformed for a reunion in early December and had a morning tea at the school in the Library so that they could renew old friendships but also so that
they could see how much building and development had occurred at the school.

A cultural change for student
ISABELLA Francis-Nieswandt from North Arm Cove will swap an Aussie summer for the charms of Italy when she takes part in a cultural exchange program early next year. The Medowie Christian
School student has undergone a thorough selection process as part of the Southern Cross Cultural Exchange Programme. Paterson MP Bob Baldwin presented Isabella with an Australian flag this week,
honouring her selection as young ambassadors of Australia. She will leave for Italy on 20 January 2016 to stay with a host family and attend a local school for five months.
UPGRADES on two sections of Bombah Point Road, which links with rural properties and the Myall Lakes National Park to the east of Bulahdelah, have been completed. “Council staff undertook work on Bombah Point Road earlier in 2015 and these recent works further improve the standard of the road,” said Council’s Director of Engineering Services, Mr Ron Hartley. One section of the recent work saw a gravel road section reconstructed over a 1.1km length enabling a bitumen seal to be applied. The work involved adding gravel to the existing road surface followed by lime stabilisation. Roadside table drains were established and a bitumen seal applied to complete
the work. “Over holiday periods Bombah Point Road sees an increase in traffic which can result in gravel road sections deteriorating rapidly. Now this 1.1km section of the road has a bitumen seal the requirement to undertake gravel road maintenance work is no longer required,” said Mr Hartley. The second section of the completed upgrade work is 700 metres in length and is just to the east of the Pacific Highway overpass. This section of road previously had a very narrow sealed width. “The narrow width was quite dangerous as passing vehicles needed to move over onto the gravel shoulder,” said Mr Hartley. On this section the finished work has seen the sealed road
widened. “Council staff from Bulahdelah Depot has undertaken the work” said Council’s Operations Manager, Mr Robert Fish. “The work progressed well and has been completed in a short timeframe, just in time for the Christmas holiday period.” “The projects have been completed under Council’s Rural Road Construction Program, which includes funding through the Federal Governments Roads to Recovery scheme,” said Mr Hartley. “Further work on Bombah Point Road to bitumen seal the remaining gravel road sections is planned to be undertaken in coming years through Council’s Rural Road Construction Program,” said Mr Hartley.

50th Reunion
FROM Page 1 There was also a meal at the Bulahdelah Bowling Club at dinner time for another opportunity for more class members to meet up. The class of 1965 were the first class to complete the School Certificate. This 50th anniversary took five years to organise due to research and tracking people down to inform them of the event. There was approximately 29 attendees between the two venues. The attendees came from Sydney, Maitland, Tuncurry and as far as Grafton. One of the key organisers of the event was Eric Chauncy who now resides in Sydney. “I really had fun finding everyone from the Bulahdelah Central School class through contacts. “Some class mates I had not spoken to for 50 years!” Eric said. Eric and the other class mates noticed that there was quite a bit of change to the school. “At the event the class mates sometimes had to look hard and think who was who.” Eric said, “It was the most friendliest thing I’ve ever seen.” Sue Saville and Diedre Russell, who reside in Bulahdelah assisted Eric in the organisation of the event. “Everyone just laughed and talked the whole time,” said Diedre.

and run as hard as they want, socialize with other dogs (which is a key element of improving behavioral issues with dogs) and get the exercise they regularly need. According to the Great Lakes Council website, areas where dogs can roam leash free currently include Bennetts Beach, Providence Bay (North of pathway) and the Yacaaba Peninsula. That effectively leaves Tea Gardens, Bundabah, Pindimar and North Arm Cove without any leash free areas at all. Following up on complaints from residents from these areas that appear to be increasingly targeted by Council Rangers threatening $220 on the spot fines, Myall Coast News have contacted Great Lakes Council to highlight the issue and try to gain a statement regarding adding more leash free areas for our pets. q SIGN: The sign currently at Bennetts Beach.

The process of applying for Probate can be quite complex and requires careful consideration of the law and its application to the Will of the deceased person.
Probate will be required in any deceased estate where there is real estate which is an asset of the Estate. It will also usually be required where any individual asset of the Estate (for example a bank account) has a value of approximately $15,000 or more. Without a grant of Probate, the executor will not have the power to administer the Estate and the assets of the Estate will not be released.

MIDCOAST Water has appointed an interim acting general manager to lead the organisation while the recruitment of a permanent general manager is underway. At yesterday’s monthly meeting, the MidCoast board appointed Executive Manager Corporate Services, Darryl Hancock, to the role of acting general manager. Mr Hancock will fulfil the role until the permanent appointment commences duties. GREAT Lakes Council has partnered with licensed premises and members of the Great Lakes Liquor Accord to provide free bottled water to patrons this holiday season, driving home the “RBT means you need a Plan B” message. Licensees are encouraging patrons to knock the top off a bottle of free water to reduce levels of intoxication and dehydration. The initiative was born almost a year ago with a local hotel offering free bottles of water to patrons during the festive season. Members of the Great Lakes Liquor Accord and Great Lakes Council jumped on board to promote the initiative and all stakeholders have funded the Plan B drink water bottle campaign. Water bottles display the “RBT means you need a Plan B” slogan and have been labelled with the logos of Great Lakes Liquor Accord and Great Lakes Council. “Recent police statistics relating to drink driving offences unfortunately confirm that local drivers continue to make poor choices. It is a positive step to see members of the liquor accord partner with other stakeholders to encourage smart choices whilst consuming alcohol,” said Council’s Road Safety Officer Chris Dimarco. The participating licensed premises are: Bellevue Hotel, Club Forster, Forster Bowling Club, Forster Tuncurry Jockey Club, Lakes and Ocean Hotel, Lakeside Tavern, Nabiac Hotel, Pacific Palms Bowling Club, Pacific Palms Recreation Club, Plough Inn Hotel - Bulahdelah, Reef Bar and Grill, Spice Monkey Restaurant, Sporties Tuncurry, The Lakes and Ocean bottle shop and the Tuncurry Beach Bowling Club. Even if a pub or club are not involved in this particular campaign, it is still highly recommended you mix your alcohol intake with a good amount of water in between. Public transport and in particular courtesy buses are readily available throughout the region and should be used as your Plan B option.

Welcomed boost for the Men’s Shed Bulahdelah is busy By Len ROBERTS Deputy Mayor, Great Lakes Council
THE old village of Bulahdelah with constant trafficking rushing through town is definitely no more. Not only are there many visitors who are making Bulahdelah a must stop destination but also the highway travelling public are also calling in. The caravanners in the Lions Park, as you enter Bulahdelah from the south, is a sight to behold. It has become an attraction not only for the grey nomads but people are now unloading houseboats there to take advantage of the magnificent Myall waterways. Who would have expected that when the Bypass was being built? Is Bulahdelah becoming a rural ‘”Riviera”?
The influx of visitors
By Rachel REITSMA HOLIDAYS for the Festive period are well and truly in flight at Bulahdelah.

THE Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Men’s Shed will receive $7000 to promote and support men’s health and well-being, Paterson MP Bob Baldwin announced last week. The grant is part of the Turnbull Government’s ongoing commitment to more than 100 men’s sheds across Australia. Announcing the grant today, Mr Baldwin said the funding would support Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Men’s Shed activities and programs, the purchase of tools and equipment and shed buildings. “Men’s Shed provide a place where men are able to work on meaningful projects at their own pace in their own time and gather together in a safe and friendly and inclusive environment,” Mr Baldwin said. “They reduce social isolation, strengthen communities and contribute to improvements in the health if individual men, particularly the
visitors are also coming from camping spots around the Great Lakes and the National Parks in the area. “Stroud Street has had its parking spots constantly full throughout the business day and many cars with their caravans and camper trailers have been parked around Wade Park.” “The Bulahdelah Chamber of Commerce is very happy to see the number of visitors who are coming through,” said Dave Saul. Most businesses on Stroud Street have reported a steady flow of business which began a week before Christmas Day and is expected to continue throughout January. Black spot mobile fund
PATERSON MP Bob Baldwin has advised the deadline for public nominations for round 2 of the mobile black spots programme has been extended until 15 January 2016. Mr Baldwin said the new date, extended from 31 December, will ensure individuals and community groups have enough time to get their nominations in after the festive season and reflects the significant demand for improved mobile coverage in rural, regional and remote Australia. “Under round 2 of the programme, the Government will commit $60 million to improve mobile coverage in areas reported as having poor or no mobile coverage by the community,” Mr Baldwin said. Morning tea will be provided for both workshops. These workshops are for children aged 5 to 14 years of age. Children under the age of 7 will need to be accompanied by an adult. Bookings can be made by phoning or coming into the library. DON’T MISS OUR

News Of The Area
Dear News Of The Area, IT must be holiday time again. Great Lakes Council workers began to erect the shelter [Over this Marine Drive, Tea Gardens, park bench] yesterday morning and then had to dismantle it in the afternoon because they were unable to get concrete for the uprights. The result is that the barrier fence has been removed and the work site postponed until
the new year. So far there has been between 30 and 40 hours of labour for nothing, except for disruption to the waterfront during peak holiday time, yet again. The supposed upgrade has been going on for over 18 months with little regard for the impact on business. Peter Hodges Tea Gardens

Backyard cricket
The official rules as outlined by Steve Waugh Waugh said. “With this in mind, I just thought I’d share some of the classic rules for backyard cricket that you can take and modify to suit your situation.” Rule 1: First ball reprieve A UNIVERSAL rule in every backyard across the country. A batsman can’t lose their wicket on the first ball. Rule 2: One hand, one bounce YOU don’t play backyard
cricket without a drink in one hand – hence the one hand, one bounce rule. You can dismiss the batsman on the first bounce by catching the ball with one hand. Just don’t spill your drink. Rule 3: Six and out THIS rule was invented to prevent the smart alec who goes the tonk on the 10-yearold bowler. Over the fence is out and you also have to make the trek to collect the ball. Rule 4: No LBW (Leg Before Wicket) CALLING an LBW is a fine art. As no one in the backyard will have the eye of Billy Bowden, they can’t be trusted. So stand in front of the wicket as much as you like. Rule 5: No running between wickets IT’S 40 degrees and you’ve just had a barbecue feast.

Rule 6: Three over spell NO one likes a hog, so batsmen cannot stay at the crease for longer than three overs. An over in backyard cricket is a subjective notion, so bat
until someone complains. Rule 7: Everyone’s a bowler IN the backyard arena, there are no specialist batsmen. Everyone must have a bowl. Just watch out for grandpa’s googly. Rule 8: Deal breaker
IT’S all a bit of fun, but when the sound of smashing glass is heard, it’s game over. Last man standing takes the blame, so ditch the bat and get out of there. WITH these rules, you can now go confidently into backyard warfare and emulate your heroes. Play well and play fair!
