Great Lakes within the 37% of Fit For The Future

GREAT Lakes Council is delighted that the Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal’s final report into the financial sustainability of NSW councils has found that it is “fit for the future”. “We are particularly pleased to see that Great Lakes satisfied all five criteria to be considered ‘fit for the future’, in fact we are the only Mid-North Coast Council to meet all five criteria,” said Council’s General Manager Mr Glenn Handford. Only 37% of NSW Councils ‘met the fit for the future’ criteria. Mr Handford said Great Lakes Council has not just been working for a couple of years to meet the ‘fit for the future’ criteria. “We embarked on a journey eight years ago to become ‘financially sustainable’ and implemented a range of measures

to achieve that. If we had not commenced then, this result would not have been achieved today,” he added. “This result has only been achieved through the disciplined leadership from our councillors that has remained focussed on achieving financial sustainability over the last eight years.” “Council staff has worked collaboratively with councillors towards this achievement,” said Mr Handford. Although details have not been announced, the Report says “the NSW Government has announced that councils which are assessed as fit will have access to a range of benefits including a streamlined rate variation process, a State Government borrowing facility, priority for other government funding

and grants, and eligibility for additional devolved planning powers. Funding will also be provided by the NSW Government to assist with the transitional costs of merging, establishing regional Joint Organisations (JO), and assisting regional and rural councils. Mr Handford said, “Our journey isn’t finished yet, because we still need to ensure we address our infrastructure backlog - and can maintain our existing assets to a level that satisfies our ratepayers.” “To achieve this, we will be looking at a small rate rise over the next four years and this was factored into the Fit for the Future submission” said Mr Handford.

The driver was a 24 year old man and he died at the scene. His passenger suffered minor injuries and was taken to John Hunter Hospital by NSW Ambulance Paramedics. Officers from Port Stephens Local Area Command established a crime scene and will conduct inquiries to determine the cause of the crash.

Community Awards line-up FROM Page 1 each of the finalists has put into their endeavours,” Mr Bromhead said. “It is pleasing to see just how widespread is the involvement of individuals and community groups across our region and although the dedication of the finalists often goes unrecognised, these awards are designed to

celebrate their industry and determination.” In addition to these awards, Katrina Moffat from Forster was named in the 2015 Hidden Treasures Honour Roll, and a NSW Carers Award was presented to Tuncurry’s Carly Carter. The Hidden Treasures Honour Roll celebrates the valuable volunteer work performed in NSW rural, regional and remote

communities. The dedicated women named on the Roll each play a key part in improving the lives of others and the neighbourhoods they live in. The NSW Carers Awards acknowledge and celebrate the enormous contribution carers make, not only to people for whom they care, but also their community. The Myall Lakes Community Awards

recognise the achievements of individuals and groups in the Myall Lakes and were first awarded in 2012 at the inception of Stephen Bromhead. An independent panel of judges selects the finalists and winners in each category, whose identities are not shown to Mr Bromhead before he announced the names of the winners.

Enjoy a relaxed evening and hear about some of the great things people in your local community are doing to look after our precious waterways. Everyone in our community is invited to come along to the release of the report card, the event will be held on Friday 6 November, 6pm - 7:30pm at the Forster Visitor Information Centre at 7 Little Street Forster. GREAT Lakes Council is utilising the power of Facebook and Twitter to find new homes for pets that have been left in the pound. For the first time, Council has taken to social media and is confident that animal lovers across the region will help their rangers to rehome abandoned dogs and cats. “We always try to reunite pets with their original owners, but sometimes this isn’t possible. We are committed to using our new Facebook and Twitter pages to help us find new loving owners for the dogs and cats in our care,” said Council’s Manager of Waste, Health and Regulatory Services John Cavanagh. Council will now post details of dogs or cats on our social media pages and invites anyone interested in adopting to fill in an online ‘expression of interest’ form. Everyone is encouraged to share the

posts, so that as many potential new owners as possible are reached. The suitability of potential new owners will be taken very seriously and the form is designed to help people understand the huge commitment involved in looking after a pet these days. “The most important thing is that the pet goes to someone who will love and care for it in the best possible way,” said Mr Cavanagh. The first animal Great Lakes Council is hoping to rehome is a female Staffy cross, named Elsa. “Elsa is a lovely dog. Our ranger has become very attached to her. Seeing her go to caring new owners will be fantastic, so we’re calling on social media users to help us achieve this,” said Mr Cavanagh. Myall Coast News is now thinking of publishing a regular Pet Of The Week/Month. Let us know what you think: news@mcnota.com.au

planning

GREAT Lakes Council has launched its new online planning enquiry tool and mapping which allows you to research the development rules for any property within the Local Government Area. The aim is to help people sift through complex planning documents to identify what development rules apply to their property. “Previously you needed to search through the main planning documents and work out which rules applied to your situation,” said Great Lakes Council’s Strategic Planner, Louise Gaffney. “With the new online tools we have done the hard work for you. Simply type in the address, select a development type and the system will produce a summary of the development rules that may apply,” explained Ms Gaffney. “Although it does not replace the formal assessment process it does provide a good guide of what you can expect when you want to develop.” Council is calling on all members of the community thinking of building, buying or just interested in learning more about development within Great Lakes, to try the online tools and give feedback on their experience. Other search features include listing the locations (zones) where a selected development can be done and identifying what development activities can and can’t be done on a property.

Redistribution of Electoral Boundaries By Rachel REITSMA

THE Australian Electoral Commission has released a draft report publishing a proposal to federal electoral boundaries in NSW. This is due to a decrease in the NSW entitlement from 48 to 47 seats in the House of Representatives. The Chair of the Redistribution Committee and Electoral Commissioner, Mr Tom Rogers said the current and projected enrolment numbers had led the Committee to propose significant adjustment to federal electoral boundaries in NSW. The area that will be affected by these changes will be the Division of Hunter. “After careful consideration, the Redistribution Committee unanimously proposes the abolition of the existing Division of Hunter,”

”Rumours of my retirement, like those of my death, are greatly exaggerated”

Mr. Rogers said. “The Division of Hunter was created at Federation in 1901, and the retention of Federation names is part of published guidelines for the naming of federal electoral divisions.” Accordingly, the Committee proposes retaining the name of ‘Hunter’ by withdrawing the name of ‘Charlton’ and renaming that Division as ‘Hunter’.” Under this proposal, electors in the northern part of the existing Division of Hunter are proposed to join the adjacent Division of New England. The remainder - about forty per cent of electors in the current Division of Hunter - are proposed

to become part of the Division of Paterson. Nearly sixty per cent of the electors in the current Division of Charlton would belong to the renamed Division of Hunter. The remaining electors are proposed to be part of the Divisions of Newcastle and Shortland. In making its proposal, the Redistribution Committee considered enrolment numbers, public suggestions and comments on suggestions, communities of interest, communication and transport links, geographic or constructed features able to be used as readily identifiable electoral boundaries, and the current federal electoral boundaries.

Individuals and organisations are able to lodge objections to the Redistribution Committee’s proposed electoral names and boundaries. Written objections must be lodged no later than 6pm AEDT Friday 13 November 2015 and the best way to lodge an objection is online by email to FedRedistributionNSW@aec.gov.au. An article about redistribution was recently published in the Sydney Morning Herald October 17-18 2015 edition with comments made about Bob Baldwin, Federal Member for Paterson, being likely to bow out of politics. Myall Coast News spoke directly to Bob Baldwin’s office and confirms

that on 16 October Bob Baldwin quoted: “Rumours of my retirement, like those of my death, are greatly exaggerated.” He also quoted, “I will continue to be representing my patch.”

q FEDERAL MEMBER: Bob Baldwin.

20-years Councillor GREAT Lakes Council’s Mayor, Cr Jan McWilliams has been recognised at last week’s NSW Local Government Conference on achieving 20 years of service as an elected councillor for her community. Cr McWilliams was first elected to Great Lakes Council in 1995 and was elected Deputy Mayor in September 2002, a position she held until her election as Mayor in 2008. She has held the Mayor’s position since. “I would like to thank the community for all the support they have given me over the last 20 years,” said Cr McWilliams. “Your continued faith in re-electing me over the years has allowed me to continue my work here.” “I thank the Local Government Association for recognising me for my years of service, and also my fellow councillors, and Great Lakes Council staff for assisting me to perform my duties as Councillor and Mayor,” said Cr McWilliams. The Mayor has been involved in numerous community projects over the years, but lists some of the highlights as the development of the Tuncurry skate park, Tuncurry grandstand, the Oyster Festival and her work on police and crime prevention committees. She continues to work hard for the Red Cross and Blood Bank of Forster, the War

Widows Guild, the Vietnam veterans, RSL sub-branch and the National Servicemen’s Association. The Mayor has received awards during her local government representation, including recognition of her contribution after 17 years of service, the Emeritus Mayoral Award 2008-2012 and the Women in Local Government Award (elected representative - rural and regional council) all from the Local Government Association. MP for Myall Lakes Stephen Bromhead has congratulated the Mayor and said, “Cr McWilliams has led Great Lakes Council over a period of growth and development which has been recognised in the Fit for the Future report on NSW local government that was released earlier this week.” “Under the strong leadership of Mayor McWilliams and general manager Glenn Handford, Great Lakes Council has been independently assessed as delivering the best services, with long-term planning and strength in its financial position,” Mr q PUBLIC SERVICE: Cr Jan McWilliams receiving her 20 year service recognition at the Bromhead said. Pharmacy always shown support By Kathrine RILEY

ON 21 October Myall Coast Little Athletics Centre President Ngarie White proudly presented Graeme Hackworthy from Myall Pharmacy with the Centre’s first Platinum Sponsor award. Since the establishment of the Myall Coast Little Athletics Centre in 2010, Myall Pharmacy has generously provided cash and in-kind support every year. Graeme Hackworthy said, “It takes many hands and hearts to run a not-for-profit service which helps to keep our kids active and healthy.” “We are very pleased to support the Myall Coast Little Athletics Centre as they are providing a wonderful service for our closeknit community,” he said. Myall Coast Little Athletics Centre President Ngarie White said, “With Myall Pharmacy’s support, the Centre has been able to continue provide a low-cost and fun sporting opportunity for the kids in our community.” “In the early days, Myall Pharmacy’s donations were used to get the Centre up and

running with the purchase of new uniforms and athletics equipment,” she said. “They now provide us with a level of funding stability so we can take care of our ongoing running costs and start to make bigger plans for the future.” “This season’s sponsorship went towards the purchase of a much needed container for the storage of athletics equipment. Without the support of local businesses, we would not be able to offer our local children the opportunity to take part in such sports,” Ms White said. The Platinum Sponsor award has been created to acknowledge sponsors that support the Centre for five or more consecutive years. Seasonal Gold, Silver and Bronze sponsorship awards have also been created to recognise the generosity of sponsors for a particular season. If you would like to find out what sponsorship opportunities are still available for the 2015/16 season, please contact Kathrine Riley who is the Myall Coast Little Athletics Centre’s Fundraising, Sponsorship and Publicity Coordinator via myallcoastlac@ hotmail.com.

By Gordon GRAINGER THE dredging program is licensed to the 31 October, which coincides with the Riverside Festival. It will be touch and go as to whether the full program will be completed, so looking on the positive side , what more could we ask for— the entrance fully opened, a fine day and the opportunity of a ferry trip on the completion day. This community will be aware of the seven years, we as the Myall

River Action Group (MRAG) have campaigned in order to achieve this outcome and return the Myall to what it was and will continue to be, a pristine river, with clear waters and oceanic influence. We believe that we have reached a milestone in that 3 tiers of local government are participating in this program and this participation looks bright for the future. Great Lakes Council has committed to a 20 year sand stabilisation program for Jimmies

Beach and will source the sand from the eastern or natural entrance. This course of action will considerably reduce the cost impost on residents being rate levied by past programs. Several State Govt. agencies including OEH and Crown Lands are studying and monitoring sand movements and river health. The Commonwealth Govt. has begun a rehabilitation program in restoring Ramsar listed Corrie Island to its’ classification as a world class refuge for migratory birds. The MRAG decided that the community and visitors be given the opportunity of viewing the works at first hand. We will participate in the Riverside Festival to be held on Saturday 31 October and have secured the availability of a ferry, generously provided by Daniel Aldridge, whose company owns and operates the Ferry Link service through the ‘Tamboi Queen” and the locally owned “Wallamba” (Wally). The ferry trip is anticipated to take approx. one hour and will leave the public wharf at Tea Gardens at intervals of 1 and a half hours beginning at 9am. Depending on demand, we are

hopeful of 6 trips during the day. Entry is free for the kids and adults will be asked to donate a gold coin to help defray the ferry costs. Coffee and tea is complimentary, soft drinks and beers can be purchased on board. Bookings will not be possible, however intending passengers will be able to choose their preferred time and be issued with tickets. Each of the trips will be accompanied by a member from one or more of the agencies who will provide a short summary of their participation in the project, as well as our political representatives, Bob Baldwin and Kate Washington. The MRAG will be located in a marquee near the entrance to the wharf and will be manned by a couple of members of the Group and agency speakers will be available to answer questions. We have arranged for a photo display and a TV history of the numerous news clips taken during the past seven years. Our thanks go to Andrew Lobb of NBN Newcastle, Matthew Kelly from Newcastle Herald for their help and locally, our Men’s’ Shed, Glen Henry and Roger Johnson of Rogers Computers. Our purpose is to show people what they have fought for and to lay the foundation for the future. We want them to say that by living here everything is “Better by the Myall”.

Open day for the historic Courthouse

By Rachel REITSMA

MYALL Coast News has reported on the Bulahdelah Courthouse in a previous edition (20 August 2015) for its importance as a museum of the Bulahdelah area and the committee would like to invite the general public to attend an Open Day this Saturday 31 October. The Bulahdelah & Districts Historical Society runs the historic courthouse as a museum and the building is owned and managed by Great Lakes Council. The committee of volunteers that open the museum, work on maintenance and grants and present talks to the visitors consists of Kevin Carter, Irene Worth, Diane

Burns and Val Brown. The Historical Society are looking for more members to help run the museum as the present committee will be retiring soon. Kevin Carter spoke to Myall Coast News about what is required of committee members. “We would like to see people who are interested in our history to become involved. “There are many ways to do this. “Do whatever you like in the areas of maintenance, gardening, research and presentations.” The Bulahdelah & District Historical Society were recently involved with Barbara Saville in the making of Historic Bulahdelah calendars which

are now being sold at the Bulahdelah Visitors Centre. The calendar includes twelve photos of the days gone by, focusing on industry and landscape changes. Barbara Saville is a former resident of Bulahdelah and put forward the idea of having a calendar done for the area as a fundraiser. Kevin Carter, on behalf of the Historical Society, supplied the photos. Barbara reports, “From the feedback I have received, the calendars have been well received by the local community.” There have also been a range of pens with the Courthouse logo produced q CALENDAR: Kevin Carter, member of which are for sale at the the Bulahdelah Historical Society, holding a Bulahdelah Visitors Centre as copy of the Historic Bulahdelah Calendar. well.

Fit for the future By Len ROBERTS

DESPITE the labelling of councils as being fit or unfit for the future most residents and ratepayers really do not mind what council area they are in. If a council is doing a lousy job, there will be many complaints but most people will go about their daily business. If a council is doing a good job there will be comments that our council is Ok but I wish they would fix the pothole in front of my place. There will always those who complain incessantly no matter what. There will always be a belief that one area gets more or less than another. So it came as no surprise that councils across the state reacted to the news that they were found fit or unfit, but the vast majority of people said so what, you did not have to be Einstein to know that and continued about their daily business! That having been said, Great Lakes along with Port Stephens were found to be fit. The councils surrounding us were not. What does that really mean for the residents and ratepayers? First, it means that the hard work and belt tightening and community engagement over the past few years has paid off. It has been a partnership between the community staff and councillors to secure a financial and sustainable future. We can be left alone to get on doing what needs to be done (albeit slowly). Second, it does not mean that we can rest on our laurels or think that we are immune from council mergers. Being fit means you are in a position to help others. Most councils that are fit abut a council that is unfit. The unfit ones are required to consider merger proposals. Those that are fit are asked to consider how they can help the unfit ones. Third, given that we are surrounded by (except for Port Stephens) unfit Dungog, Gloucester and Taree we will be required to consider many options, some nonsensical, some unpalatable but doable and of course the option of leave us alone. Council has until Mid-November to respond. Our preference is to stand alone so that there is no additional impost placed on our residents and ratepayers, but we need your feedback. Please email len@myallcoast.net.au with your thoughts and I will forward it onto council, or drop a letter in to the district office. Check council website for information regarding other feedback opportunities. Finally, it means that business will not be as usual and changes will happen. The good news is that having been found fit for the future we are able to borrow money at low interest, not have to go for large rate rises but have the right to budget in accordance with adopted community plans and strategies and eligible for additional government grants. It really is good news that we were found fit.

Welcomed addition to Private Hospital HUNTER New England (HNE) Health has reached an agreement to establish a public dialysis unit at Forster Private Hospital, meaning patients will be able to receive the life-saving treatment closer to home. Member for Myall Lakes Stephen Bromhead said HNE Health reached an agreement with the operator of Forster Private Hospital, Pulse Health, and the owner of the facility, Cape Hawke Community Hospital and Health Association to operate six chairs from its new custom-built renal unit. “All parties have been working towards this outcome, of delivering public dialysis chairs in Forster and it is pleasing to see it come to fruition,” said Mr Bromhead. “I appreciate how difficult and exhausting it is for patients to spend many hours a week on renal dialysis and I hope that by providing this treatment closer to home, this process will be just that little bit easier.” Michael DiRienzo, Chief Executive, Hunter New England

Oyster farmer is not abalone By Dave BRAZIER

WHEN it rains, sometimes it pours. And when it pours for days like the super storm experienced earlier this year, for Aquaculture dependant businesses like Cole Brothers Oysters the results can be devastating. Some will say that’s nature doing it’s course and sometimes it can be cruel. Speaking recently with Myall Coast News about the proposed Abalone Farm, 3rd generation Oyster Farmer Steven Cole from Cole Brothers Oysters at Karuah said, “We thought it was dead in the water years ago, we have had enough to worry about with extreme weather conditions recently that put us out of business for three months, we certainly do not need another risk to our business.” “The April superstorm destroyed all of our racks South of the bridge, it was totally devastating to not only our stocks but for all the growers here. We are still three months behind due to that storm despite working flat out 7 days a week. The last thing we need is something else to worry about leading up to the Christmas rush,” he said. Steven Cole stated, “Trying to meet 300-400 dozen Oysters to wholesale markets weekly to our

Sydney and Brisbane clients, and producing about the same for local sales is hard enough, we cannot accept the possible disease risks this development could bring the industry here in Karuah and we wholeheartedly oppose it.” “As a stakeholder in aquaculture in the area I would have thought someone from the Department of Planning, Fisheries or the developer themselves would have consulted us?” Myall Coast News met with other Oyster Farmers in Karuah and discussed the proposed Abalone Farm, and learnt that they also were not advised of the development and verbally opposed the proposal due to risks to their business. As part of the developers responses to concerns raised in the Environment Impact Study, as stated on the NSW Department of Planning website and in regards to Oyster Farmers in the area, the developer has quoted, “There are no operational oyster leases in near proximity to the proposed abalone farm and its discharge pipes.” Clearly the Oyster Farmers at Karuah do not agree with and are concerned with this statement. Myall Coast News is attempting to gain further statements from the NSW Department of Planning, the Developer and also from the Oyster Growers Association.

WEATHER: Gavin Morris pointing out the Bulahdelah report.

Weather man chats to Nota By Rachel REITSMA

NBN Newcastle weather reports during the 6pm weeknight reports has now put Bulahdelah on the map. Gavin Morris, the weather reporter for NBN Newcastle spoke informatively with Myall Coast News and explained how this came about. “It comes down to data and the Bureau of Meterology has taken on a lot of new towns to report on due to new data being received.” If you access the Australian Government - Bureau of Meterology website and click on 7-day forecast

for NSW you will notice that Bulahdelah is now a town that is receiving official forecasts due to more details being available. NBN Newcastle weather forecasts receive that data and are able to forecast exclusively for the area of Bulahdelah. The 7 day forecast continues to report of hot weather for October. It’s been a very hot month and is likely to go down as Australia’s hottest October on record and the year 2015 is heading towards superceding the year of 2014 as being the hottest year globally.

Australia is still in an El Nino phase which means that below average rainfall will be expected right through till next year. Gavin Morris also explained that Bulahdelah is in a unique location with the Barrington Tops to the west and the coast to the east. “Bulahdelah will receive humid conditions in the summer time but also is prone to storms and rainfall due to the mountain range pushing up the clouds to develop rain. “Bulahdelah can expect to see two more big weather systems before the end of October.”

Dear News Of The Area,

Dear News Of The Area,

Your local Myall Coast Entertainers (MCE) have done it again by performing He Said and She Said, and the Misused Mill Girl to wonderful audiences at Hawks Nest and North Arm Cove. Feedback has been outstanding according to MCE President Allan Wilson, with laughter turning into tears as people booed and clapped (not always at the appropriate times), making all performances special, different and unique. “Live theatre, is an escape from everyday activities that allows the audience to let their imaginations run wild, and is alive and well in this community”, said Allan. Of behalf of the players, I would like to thank this wonderful community for once again supporting their local theatre group, and encouraging us to continue doing what we love, and that is entertaining people.

Beach or not. My opinion. Locals and visitors team up for pelican Dear News Of The Area,

I WAS very impressed by your article “Beach or Not to Beach” last week. It has finally prompted me to publicise my opinion on sand in Port Stephens and I hope can you find the room to publish this letter I refer to Myall Coast News’ article last week (edition 22 October 2015 “To beach or not to beach”). I have been publicly silent for years on this issue. Whenever opening my mouth I would find myself with new enemies. And as those in authority never listened anyway, it became a worthless pursuit. No longer can I hide my serious concern that one aspect of this issue, sand addition, is destroying our port. Let me be crystal clear that while I am uncertain of the outcome , I very much support dredging the river. I am writing about sand on the Boulevarde regardless of its source . In my short life the tonnage of sand dumped there is incalculable. No one knows the amount . It has come from Deadmans, North Hawks Nest, the river, Winda Woppa itself and in the vicinity of new housing estates in Tea Gardens. On numerous occasions trucks have dumped the stuff

during storms for up to 4 days 24 hours . The result.... Google Earth reveals hectares of bare sand stretching southeast of the erosion site. It goes half way to the heads burying once healthy habitat that can be seen in 1970s aerial photos. Also, the peninsula of sand sticking out to the west just before the boulders , did not exist when I was a child . Now the unique sponge gardens of Halifax Park Nelson Bay are buried and there is more sand than ever at Pindimar. Council keeps claiming that yet more sand is the Boulevarde solution and refer to their various expensive studies. Yet many of those studies seem contradictory. One says sand from the Boulevarde will wash towards The Boulders only. Apparently the grain size and currents are wrong for sand to go west. Well if various infrastructure including bits of gates and asphalt road from the Boulevarde turn up near the river mouth after a storm, surely some sand can make it too. Another study says dredged material from the river bed cannot be placed on the Boulevarde because it is the wrong structure.

Furthermore it’s toxic. Yet another report says it is actually the best stuff to be placed there! In emergencies though , reports seem to be ignored and any stuff is dumped there. It is a serious matter. The Boulevarde area is a swell magnet and the erosion of sand will never stop. Seagrass beds like mangroves forests are critical habitat , including for fish spawning . They are a protected species under various Government Acts. The Marine Parks Authority have workshops to educate people about damage done by boats anchoring. What a joke. The difference between anchoring on seagrass or its burial is like the difference between a mouse scratching your lawn and manual burial. Sand under water might look nice but it is an ecological desert. The more of it we have the less fish we will catch. Even less pelagics I suspect. I wonder what will the port look like in the future ? Port Stephens is within a Marine park. Imagine if this burial was happening on the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park? Christian Patteson Hawks Nest

Dear News Of The Area,

WHEN visitors to the area found a local pelican with a rusty fish hook deeply embedded in its knee joint they spoke with Joanne from Hook-N-Cook fish and chips in Tea Gardens who attracted the limping pelican with fresh fish while waiting for local David Matheson. David arrived in minutes of being contacted with tools in hand he commandeered the help of visitor Claude Filo and set about the task of removing the hook. By utilising David’s knowledge and instruction they gently captured and immobilised the pelican and removed the rusted hook. The pelican was in obvious pain unable to walk on the leg or use it to swim, this is obviously the result of irresponsible disposal of fish hooks and a strong argument for appropriate care of fishing hooks and line to protect our wild life. After the ordeal the pelican seemed much happier thanks to David and had a full tummy from hook-n-cook Leone Filo Old Bar

They played two games of 10 ends, 2 bowl triples, changing rinks after the first game. This competition is an annual event sponsored by RSL LifeCare at the Grange. The Social Committee members catered for our lunch with a wonderful array of gourmet sandwiches, followed by an abundance of delicious slices, homemade, by some of club members. There were so many slices that the surplus was boxed and sold,

with the proceeds going into our Oncology Day coffers. Julie Woolard, manager of the RSL LifeCare Grange, joined us for lunch and presented the winners and the runners up with their prizes. The winners for the day were Wilma Drake, Rusty Sargeant and Vicki Rankin, with 2 wins and 42 shots. Well played!! The runners up were Chris Fossey, Jill McBride and Lynne Green, with 2 wins and 33 shots. Close! Tea Gardens Women’s Bowling Club wishes to sincerely thank the RSL LifeCare for their continuing sponsorship of this event, for without it, this Day would not happen. Thursday 22nd October: No Social Bowls today , due to the away game. Thursday 22nd.October: This morning at 7.45 ,24 four bowlers took off from Tea Gardens ,some by bus others by car, for Lemon Tree Passage Bowling Club, in pouring rain I might add. There were 6

Runners-up on a score of 16 were the well credentialed pairing of; Neil (Silky) Kibble and Bill Whalan. There were four teams entered for the jackpot draws but there were no

winners. Jackpots now stand at $200.00 and $100.00 next week. In other news, Dolphin Day will be held on Friday 27 November and not deferred to a date in 2016 as previously advised. Club Mixed Fours: The entry sheet for this competition has been posted on the notice board with entries closing on Friday 30 October. The draw will be made on that date. Single entries will be welcome and every effort made to obtain partners and make up teams. The first round will commence on Saturday 7th November and rounds will continue on 8th, 14th, 15th and 22nd of November, if needed. October 25: In Sunday Introduction to Bowls32 Players attended in beautiful conditions. The winners were: Pat Wilson, Clare Brown and John Moore. Lucky Losers were: Gary Wynne, Lon Richards and Stu Sturrock. Many thanks to our cooks Max Stephens and Barry Goode and our Coach, John Bilby.

q SUPPORT: Wilma Drake, Vicki Rankin and Rusty Sargeant with Julie Woolard, Manager of RSL LifeCare Grange. teams of four players. Just over one year ago the secretary of Lemon Tree Passage Women’s Bowling Club , Annette Cheetham, and our secretary, Vicki Rankin, came up with the idea of a Friendly Annual Competition between our two clubs. So the Tea Gardens / Lemon Tree Passage Challenge was born. A trophy was purchased, and “The Challenge” began. Last year the competition took place in Tea Gardens, which included a game of

bowls followed by lunch. Tea Gardens won the inaugural “Challenge: This year Lemon Tree Passage hosted the “Challenge”. In some closely fought matches, Tea Gardens regained the trophy with a score of 99 – 75. The trophy was duly returned to our display cabinet until next year. This day is a friendly and happy event with lots of raffles and prizes and plenty of chit - chat amongst the ladies. We all look forward to meeting again next year.

At the halfway stage they had a lead of 13 shots before Steve and Kathy started a comeback and trailed by only 3 shots on the 19th end. But they could not close the gap and after 21 ends Linda and Kevin took the game by 22 shots to 17, to be the 2015 mixed pairs champions. Myall Masters Swimming By Ian FELTON

THE Myall Masters Swimming has started on a real high for season 2015-2016 with the opening nights providing perfect conditions in and out of the water, with the water temperature around a balmy 26 degrees. Little wonder that there have been record numbers at the opening nights with plenty of new faces joining the regular familiar faces. There is however still a number of spots available for those keen for a friendly training swim at 5.30pm on a Monday evening, at Tea Gardens pool. So don’t hesitate to take the plunge and enjoy the friendship of this up and coming Masters swimming club. We are open to anyone 18 years or older who are able to swim 25m. Swimming is a wonderful means of keeping fit and Myall Masters do it in style. In other news, Myall Masters will again this year be presenting

a free adult learn to swim class from the 9th -13th November at Tea Gardens pool. Timing will be 11-12 noon. This learn to swim class has proved very popular in previous years with over 20 participants becoming proficient in the past two years alone. Get down to Tea Gardens pool on the above dates where qualified coaches will teach and have you mastering your stroke in no time at all. All you will need is your swimmers, a towel and a keen to learn attitude. These swimmers plus others have kept Myall in number 1 position in the States Division 2 of the state wide competition ahead of Penrith with great deal more population and swimmers. Any enquiries regarding Myall Masters Swimming Club or the learn to swim should be directed to Club Secretary Linda Stubbs on 0423156433.
