Keys our Young Citizen q
AWARDED: Bulahdelah Central School student Ruby Keys has been awarded Great Lakes Young Citizen of the Year at the 2016 Australia Days Award ceremony.
RUBY Keys’ concern about homelessness and the plight of those less fortunate than others has been recongnised in the awarding of Young Citizen of the Year. Ruby collected food and other goods to distribute to homeless people when she was in
Sydney recently. Hardly a passing phase, Ruby has incorporated research on this subject into her HSC studies at Bulahdelah Central School. Great Lakes Council celebrated Australia Day with the announcement of the Great Lakes
Australia Day Awards, citizenship ceremonies and the awarding of school students in the e-calendar competition. “It was a wonderful celebration of all the worthy recipients in the Great Lakes, be they volunteers, professionals, or someone helping
out their community. Our Ambassador Father Chris Riley was impressed with the calibre of the awardees as these people humbly accepted their awards,” said Mayor, Cr Jan McWilliams.

CHEERS: Rebekka Cunningham is proud to live in Australia.
The best country in the world By Rebekka CUNNINGHAM
AS soon as I was old enough to leave home and travel the world, that was exactly what I did. I applied for an Australian passport and booked a flight overseas. From the age of 18 through to 24, I spent more time abroad than I did in my own country, tramping around Europe and the United Kingdom, volunteering in Africa and back packing across South East Asia. I couldn’t get enough – the people that you meet and the bonds you form over a shared pint or lost
bag, the new sites, tastes and smells every corner you turn. It wasn’t until I hit 23 that I started to miss my own country. Although I was living the dream, as most of my friends described it, I had truly forgotten how much I love my own country, until coming back to Australia prior to my last trip abroad. As we loom into Australia Day, it got me thinking about what being Australian means to me. In particular, what it means to me, as someone who has spent more of her adult years out of the country, rather than in the country.
For me, it’s not just about the great weather and amazing beaches (which I certainly missed especially while living in London). Being Australian, I feel incredibly lucky with the amount of opportunities we have in life. We can travel freely; speak openly; and we have a nation that bands together when things go pear shaped. It’s a country where I feel very fortunate that one day I will be able to raise a family and know that they will get a good education and space to grow. I hope you all have a lovely Australia Day, and take some time to think about just how lucky we are.
In addition to her visual art, Stephanie writes creatively and in 2015 she published an art-therapy colouring-in book. The Local Champion of the Arts Award went to the Lakeside Festival Incorporated for its efforts to produce an event for local musicians and artists to showcase their talents. The Festival enriches the community as a cultural event for the region. Dane Jeffery took out the Sportsperson of the Year Award for his outstanding swimming achievements both locally and at
State level. Dane’s dedication to his sport enabled him to win a bronze medal in 100 breast stroke and he was a finalist in other events at the recent NSW Short Course State Age Championships. The Great Lakes Citizen of the Year award went to Julie Brady for her all round success in all areas from farming to singing to fighting fires and more recently, in her role as Founding Member for the Great Lakes Women’s Shelter. This year, there was a Special Mayor’s Award to Michael Maytom, who was instrumental in saving
AT about 4pm on Monday 18 January, police from Bulahdelah stopped a vehicle on the Pacific Highway near Nabiac for the purpose of a random breath test. At the time the vehicle contained a 20 year old male driver and an 18 year old male passenger. Upon questioning the driver police suspicions were aroused in relation to the vehicle containing a prohibited drug. A subsequent search of the vehicle located these prohibited drugs with the total weight of what is thought to be cannabis being 17.6 grams. A further search located three rolls of what the male described as cookie dough and a small case containing a further 4.5 grams of what is thought to be cannabis and a glass water pipe. Another bag was searched and a further 19.6 grams of what is thought to be cannabis was located. Further police investigations are being carried out in relation to the matter with cautions and charges pending against the two vehicle occupants.

Violence order
ON Saturday 16 January, a 17 year old man was seen by police, sitting on an unregistered trail bike at the intersection of Church Street and Crawford Street, Bulahdelah. Police were nearby at an unrelated job and had previously heard the engine revving sounds of this said trail bike. On being spoken to by police the young person admitted that he only has a NSW Learners Permit and does not have a riders Licence. Police subjected the young person to a roadside breath test which gave a positive result. The young person was placed under arrest and later returned a reading of 0.029 grams of alcohol in 210 litres of breath. He is to appear at Forster Court at a date in February.

Regular tourist is now resident By Rebekka CUNNINGHAM
WENDY Earnshaw, a retired school teacher, made a change late last year, moving from the hustle and bustle of Sydney, to enjoy a more relaxed and slower paced lifestyle in Hawks Nest. “I’ve been holidaying in Hawks Nest for over 20 years and last year I made the decision to exchange my fast paced life, for freedom and space,” said Wendy. “As an English Teacher with over 40 years’ experience, it’s a great place to relax and get the creative juices flowing.” Wendy has taught students from primary to secondary, including HSC level, as well as
tertiary level at Tafe. She is also qualified to teach English to those with non - English backgrounds and can assist with accents and pronunciation. Although she moved to Hawks Nest to retire, she has decided to establish a home tuition service. While Wendy prefers to tutor from home so that she has access to all of her resources on demand, she is also happy to travel, as well as offer mentoring via phone and email. Specialising in creative writing, grammar, literary and film technique and analysis, Wendy also teaches research skills and organisational skills and helps students learn to monitor their

A lot of people get hung up on not being able to spell a word and don’t manage to get their thoughts to paper. This is a particularly important with the pressures of the HSC where time is limited.” “The school system has become very competitive and students become disheartened when comparing themselves to others. Conversely, Karen Nelson introduced us to smaller groups and tailor-made tours throughout the UK and Europe explaining that the maximum group size is eighteen people booked to travel in a twenty seater Mercedes van on scenic back roads (not freeways) whilst experiencing authentic local culture, charming
local accommodation, culinary experiences all on a leisurely paced itinerary. As already mentioned, Altitude Travel is now located at the Myall Quays Shopping Centre (right next door to BTs for Fashion) so pop in and say hello to the friendly girls who will gladly assist with your chosen holiday arrangements. From time to time the media will report that a child has been retained by one parent. If the child is in Australia the parent who does not have the child can bring an application with the Family Law Courts to try and recover the child. This is known as a ‘recovery order’. It is necessary to present any existing orders, where the child usually lives, when the child ought to have been returned, where the child could be, steps that have been taken to locate the child, why it is in the child’s best interest to be returned and the likely impact on the child if a recovery order is not made. If the parent with the child participates in proceedings the Court will make an order as to which parent the child
should be with pending further order being made. If the parent with the child cannot be found the Court can order that a person, such as a police officer, take appropriate action to find, recover and deliver the child to the applicant parent or some other carer. The steps that can be taken include stopping and searching vehicles, vessels or aircrafts and the searching of any premise or place where the child reasonably could be. The Court can also order a ‘location order’ to obtain information from a government agency about the child’s possible location. The Court can also make a ‘publication order’ which allows the media to publish the details and photographs of the missing child.

Shadow Minister
SHADOW Minister for the Hunter, Kate Washington MP, has demanded to know why Hunter commuters have to wait at least 3 years for the heavy rail to be replaced by the light rail. Ms Washington told Myall Coast News, more than a year since the heavy rail trains going into Newcastle Station were stopped, the State Government has only just announced that expressions of interest to design and build a light rail network in Newcastle are open. “Meanwhile, work on ripping up the heavy rail continues and commuters are left to make do with the large inefficiencies of a patchy public transport network.” Ms Washington said, “Why is it taking the government three years to build a few kilometres of light rail? The light rail provider should have been in place the day the heavy rail line was ripped up.” “This just spells more delays and inconvenience for long suffering Hunter commuters,” she said.

OWNERS: Peter and Kerry Hodges.
By Rebekka CUNNINGHAM THE iconic Marine Drive restaurant, Tillermans Café, this year celebrates 20 years in the hands of owners / operators, Peter and Kerry Hodges. Peter and Kerry moved to Tea Gardens in 1996 from Bright, Victoria to take over the management of the restaurant and have, over the past 20 years, turned it into a must visit food mecca for locals and regulars alike. “My family and I used to holiday in Tea Gardens over forty years ago,” Kerry said. “We would come and spend most weekends and holidays here. I always used to walk passed the restaurant because our family holiday house was just down the road. I walked in one day off the street and asked for a job, which I kept for several years.” Under Kerry and Peter’s meticulous management, Tillermans Café Restaurant today boasts an impressive modern Australian menu, dishing up seasonal meals for Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner.
Photo: Bek Cunningham While during the summer period, Peter and Kerry open their doors almost 7 days a week, the business closes down during the winter months, when Peter and Kerry dash off to France. “It’s the best of both worlds really,” said Peter Hodges. “Not only do we get to live in such a beautiful part of Australia, but we also get to spend three months each year in France where we completely immerse ourselves in the French way of life, ” he said. Peter and Kerry own a little house in Sigoulès, a short drive from the well-known town of Bordeaux. Each year they take groups of Australians across and take them on a culinary journey of their area. “We love being able to combine our love for food, wine and France to create an experience that we are able to share with fellow Australians. “And we love that we have been able to earn a living from it,” said Mr Hodges.

Mental Illness is the third leading cause of disability in Australia. Statistics show that at least one of those five people will experience some kind of mental health issue in the next year.
While there is constant fund raising and awareness days being held for this worthy cause, the changes in the Great Lakes and surroundings mental health system is coming through at a painfully slow trickle. Perhaps this is what has lead locals making efforts to better their own journey through their mental health issues by turning to others
THE anxious wait for dozens of school leavers in the area is finally over with the first round of university offers made recently. Former Bulahdelah Central School student Ellie Gooch was excited to be offered her first choice, a Bachelor of Rural Science at the University of New England in Armidale. Ellie, an avid camp draft rider, has always wanted to work in the agriculture field and is hoping that her degree will lead to working with animals in rural areas. Planning to live in student accommodation on campus, Ellie said she is excited, but nervous at the same time. “I’m worried about all the people and moving away from home,” she said. However, she will not be alone, with several of her classmates also making the move to Armidale to

Many people with lived experience of mental health issues are isolated and may often feel alone, people can find it hard entering the world at times. “Exercise at a gym or on a team brings the individual back into the community, and that is beneficial for improvement in resilience and mental health. Exercise, activity,” local psychotherapist Shannon Anima said. Local women Leigh Gee shares a touch of her journey by saying, “After suffering mental health issues for over 10 years, I became a hermit, I never left my own home.” She goes on to say, “I was incapable of going out in public with out having panic attacks.” Leigh was introduce to group exercise by her therapist, was happy to share the effects exercise has had by saying it made her feel human again. It’s inspiring to see people with living with mental health issues participating in group exercise and taking hold of their own recovery journey to make positive changes in their own lives.

Ellie, who was last year’s Great Lakes Young Citizen of the Year, said she would love to stay in the area to continue her studies, however Armidale was one of the few Universities in NSW to offer the Rural Science course. Apart from attending university, she said some of her former school mates have gained full-time employment while others are taking a gap year before continuing with their studies. Council to help swim instructor Video games Dear News Of The Area,
IN Response to the opinion “Importance of Swim” dated 21 January, 2016 Myall Coast News. I understand the frustration of having to travel distances for learn to swim lessons and the costs involved however the local community have many young people travelling to attend their chosen sports. Yes swimming should be a community concern and yes it would be nice and convenient to have a local permanent swimming instructor. I have been a teacher of swimming and a coach for some 50 years and a learn to swim teacher at Tea Gardens Pool for a number of years.
If they knew Dear News Of The Area,
IT was wonderful to see so many holiday makers enjoying the deep shade of the Coral Trees this summer. Blissfully ignorant of the trees’ proposed fate. I wonder what return visitors will think next year? The latest plan is tree replacement with man made shelters. And it is imminent. The trees seem immune to everything nature can dish out. But cannot compete with council’s reports and chainsaws. Swansea, Belmont, Shoal and Nelson Bay’s foreshore Coral Trees are double to triple the size of our dwarfs. Yet Lake Macquarie and Port Stephens Councils don’t seem to be concerned about their giants. Why Great Lakes Council is so worried about our dwarfs is anyone’s guess. Christian Patteson Hawks Nest
I believe I am able to give some insight. Firstly the Great Lakes Council has always supported a qualified teacher to apply for regular hours to teach swimming. There have been at least two, other than myself, who have conducted classes in the past 10 years. The problem has been that there is no consistency of water temperature throughout the season and attendances are therefore irregular. Pool blankets are only used the first and last months of the swimming season. When the water temperature is unpleasant and cold winds are prevalent the problem increases. Again attendances are reduced. This effects the instructors income and
creates uncertainty in class attendances and causes frustration by the instructor and parents. I believe if the two problems could be solved then attracting a Qualified Swim Teacher would be far easier. Great Lakes Council has control over these matters. To address the fee position Sport and Recreation hold two week sessions every Summer period at reduced rates. Other swim schools may have reduced rates for pensioners. I hope my comments may assist you with your concerns.

NBN: Needs Better Notion
Dear News Of The Area, I WOULD like to thank Bob Baldwin for his efforts to sort out TV reception in our area. My reception is now great from the new repeater at Gan Gan after following the instructions in Bob’s recent letter. I would now ask him to turn his attention to the parlous state of the National Broadband Network (NBN) in the Paterson electorate. On this map from the NBN website, areas in purple already have access while areas surrounded in fuzzy orange may have some work done sometime in the next three years. Many larger towns in Paterson have no NBN access such as Raymond Terrace, Medowie, Tilligerry Peninsular, Tea Gardens/
Hawks Nest, Buladelah and Karuah. Surprisingly, some smaller towns like Wootton, Coomba Park, Booral and Coolongolook already have the NBN. The NBN has been able to give access to many less populated areas via wireless NBN base stations (about 1300 so far). These provide radio frequency (RF) transmission in roughly line-of-sight localities, usually from transmitters on top of hills for up to a 14km radius. Why is this technology not possible here, from Gan Gan, for example? (Nelson Bay already has NBN and Shoal Bay is under construction). Ian Morphett Hawks Nest
The mouth of the river has moved Dear News Of The Area,
THE Historical Society was once again happy to be part of the Australia Day Breakfast in Moira Parade Park. However it is now time to resume our usual routine with a meeting on the first Tuesday of each month held at the ‘Old Library’ at Hawks
Nest at 7pm. We like to arrange visits to areas of historic interest and talks pertaining to our area. The first of these will be held on 2 February and promises to be fascinating. One of our members is Garry Worth (BSc Dip Sci. Dip Bushfire Planning.) Garry intends to inform us
of the “Wandering Mouth of the Myall River.” The mouth of the river has moved as much as 30 km over the last 50,000 years. It arrived at it’s present position only 4,000 years ago. While the river mouth is not wandering at present, it is far from stable and 200 years of maps show that the
geological forces that have caused the changes to it over 10’s of thousands of years are still active. These forces will impact on any attempt to manage the geomorphology of the river mouth and Myall Point.

Dear News Of The Area, FOR many years now there has been a ton of criticism towards video games because generally people feel they are the cause, or partly responsible, for children becoming antisocial, overweight, violent and depressed. Even Hillary Clinton has recently said violent video games increases aggressive behavior. People have said video games do nothing to contribute to a person’s life, but does a blanket broad-brush comment like this fail to realise the good that can come from playing video games? A recently conducted a study in New Zealand looked at if gaming can help people with psychological problems such as depression and anxiety. They tested 94 people who were diagnosed with depression and the results were as follows. With 94 people playing a video game called SPARX the game reduced symptoms of depression more than conventional treatment. Patrick Markey was one of the researchers for a study that showed violence actually decreases with the release of a game that has violent content said the following “Various measurements of video game use are related decreases in violent crime such as homicide”. I have been a gamer for the past 15 years and I have found that the only harm that can come from playing a game is becoming overweight if you play the game excessively. It is my belief that gaming is a perfect way to reduce violence because people cannot commit crimes if they are at home playing a video game. It also my belief that gaming can help people become more social by interacting with other players. The key to not becoming overweight is to do physical exercise and not play the game for excessive amounts of time. Last but not least playing video games can teach a person how to problem solve, make quick decisive decisions and it is also beneficial for a person’s hand eye coordination. Games do not cause children to become anti-social, violent or depressed. Used wisely, games can be an effective learning tool for children and adults and they should not be frowned upon but enjoyed. KYLIE Minogue’s song Lucky, Lucky, Lucky, certainly applied to the O’Connell family from Norah Head who were enjoying the St Vincent de Paul Bingo night on Tuesday, 19 January at the Hawks Nest Golf Club. The O’Connell family, which includes mum Leonie, dad Kevin and son Kieran were quietly sitting together marking the called numbers on their three separate
playing cards when the room resounded with a triple Bingo call. An exciting bustle filled the room. The happy holiday makers all went out at the same time to win $10 each. The amazing result was enjoyed by all in attendance. One player did some quick mathematical reasoning and calculated the chances of three members of one family winning at the same time would be at least a
to each employee at Christmas as a thank you for their service. Some years back employees chose to forego the gift to enable Council to donate instead to a charitable purpose. Each year the staff chooses an organisation to receive the gift. “This year the decision was made to provide a contribution to the Great Lakes Women’s Shelter,” said Mayor Cr Jan McWilliams. President of the Women’s Shelter, Julie Brady said, “Not only is the donation very welcome towards funding our operations in 2016, what is most encouraging and heartening is the level of grass root support as shown by the generous decision of Great Lakes Council staff in choosing to redirect their Christmas benefit to the Great Lakes Women’s Shelter.” million to one. Pity it wasn’t the Lotto with the excitement the win caused it could have been. St Vincent de Paul conducts Bingo during the holiday periods and is deeply grateful to the Hawks Nest Golf Club for their support throughout the year. Proceeds from the entertaining night out assists those in need in the local area. The O’Connell family will be buying a Lottery ticket with part of their winnings. Maybe, Lucky, Lucky, Lucky will become their theme song.

BOWLS Tea Gardens Men’s Bowls By The JAFFA
JANUARY 20: In very hot and humid conditions 50 bowlers turned up to play the usual Wednesday Nominated Triples competition. Both greens were in use with the grass green playing a touch faster than last week. It should continue to improve. There were many great scores recorded with a couple of +25’s filling third place and the team of Bryan McPhei, Ron Green and Danny Johnson taking second money on +26. In first place, on a staggering +47 were the team of Henk Faber, Mark Hair and Leigh Hunt. We would all like to know who they played because the teams they beat are not going to confess! January 22: After a couple of false starts, Friday Jackpot Bowls returned today with the first game of the New Year. Again the weather was hot and humid
and play took place on the synthetic which was running very nicely. Graham Bateman, from Lake Cathie BC , was made welcome and he competed with 18 local bowlers. It was nice to see George Brown competing, a new member from Karuah. The winners, on a countback, on 17 points, were the triples game of Terry Munright, George Brown and Geoffrey Muggleton. Runners-up also on 17 points were Garry Wynn and Bob Weir. The jackpot was not won and will carry over ad-infinitum until won. January 23: Further Pennant trials were held today with a few showers greeting the bowlers and a very welcome southerly change blowing through during the game. Bowlers came under the watchful eyes of the selectors and many teams had close games, a good indication that the mix of teams might be finalised soon. The draw has been completed for the Club Minor Pairs Championship with the first round commencing next Saturday. Nominations are now open for the Minor Singles Championship. They close on February 12.

Team plays on big stage Swim and Survive
By Lily SMITH
WELCOME back to our 2016 year of bowls. Our season started with the Club Pairs Championship. As yet I have no report, but all will be revealed in due course. The Club had a new member join us today, Darelle Rowe who has moved to Tea Gardens from Soldiers Point. Darelle’s husband Ronald has joined our men’s club. Welcome to you both. Social Bowls: There were 12 bowlers on the grass green today. Two games of triples were played. One team pulled out after 12 ends, and the other after 14 ends. Between the heat and the heavy green it was tough going. The winners with the highest margin were, Darelle Rowe, Dorothy Thompson and Bev Stephens Thursday 14 January: Bowls cancelled due to the heat. Here are the results of round 1 of the Club Pairs Championship played on Tuesday. Round 1.On Rink 1 Pam Gilchrist and Wendy Jones defeated Lesley Kibble and Anne Mackenzie 14 – 13. Close game!! On rink 2 Vicki Rankin and Lorraine Harvey defeated Robyn Webster and Liz Kelly 17 – 13. Another fairly close game! On rink 3 Lynne Green and Nola Jackson defeated Bev Rhodes and Sandra Leisemann 15 – 3. On rink 4 Karen McPhie and Kathie Rimmer defeated Carol Hayden and Dale winter 19 – 2. Carol and Dale pulled out as Karen was distressed by the heat. On rink 5 Sheril Johnson and Susan Gate won their game as Rusty Sargeant was also overcome by the heat. On rink 6 Deyonne Page and Maynie Roberts defeated Jill McBride and Olive McKeown 17 – 5. Deyonne was a substitute for Pat Baker. Tuesday 19 January: Round 2 of the Club Pairs Championship was played today. With a slight breeze the conditions were much more comfortable for bowling. On rink 2 Lynne Green and Nola Jackson defeated Karen McPhie and Kathie Rimmer 16 – 14. That was a really close match throughout. On the last end with one bowl to be played, Kathie was holding 2 shots , a win in her sights , but Nola played an on-shot and took the match 16 – 14. Exciting stuff!!! On rink 3 Vicki Rankin and Lorraine Harvey had a win, but it wasn’t easy. On the 12th end the score was 11 – 10 in Loraine’s favour, and from then Vicki and Lorraine dug deep and won with a score of 24 – 11. Well played ! On rink 4 Deyonne Page and Maynie Roberts defeated Pam Gilchrist and Wendy Jones 26 – 13. Try as they did, Wendy and Pam Just couldn’t catch the opposition. On rink 5 Karen Green and Loretta Baker defeated Kerry Faber and Wendy Brand 36 – 16. Karen and Loretta were on fire, scoring 6 on the sixth, 8 on the eighth and 5 on the eleventh ends. A great victory, well done! The semi-finals will take place on Thursday January 21st. There should be some close matches. Social Bowls: The format today was, one game of fours and two games of two bowl triples. The winners with the lowest score were, Francis Betar, Maureen Shelley, Dorothy Thompson and Olive McKeown. Thursday 21 January: The semi-finals of the Club Pairs Championship took place, once again in very hot conditions. On rink 1 Vicki Rankin and Lorraine Harvey had a convincing win over Karen Green and Loretta Baker. When the score reached 29 – 4 after 16 ends Loretta conceded the match. Well Played Vicki and Lorraine!! On rink 2 Lynne Green and Nola Jackson defeated Deyonne Page and Maynie Roberts 18 – 10. There were no big scoring ends in this match, Nola just kept on and slowly but surely wore down the opposition. Well Played! Due to the Australia Day holiday , the finals will be played on Thursday January 28th. We look forward to an exciting final.

MYALL Masters Swimming Club is into the full ‘’swim’’ of the summer season. The annual Swimming Carnival will be held on Saturday, 6 February, at the Tea Gardens Pool. The NSW Branch Pointscore Carnival has become a must swim on the Masters’ competition schedule. Approximately 200 competitors and supporters flock to the Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest area for a weekend of fun, friendship and fitness. A large contingent of Myall Masters will be competing at the event. Having won the Carnival for the past two years Club Captain, Chris Mobbs, believes that the Club will again ‘’sweep the pool’’ (not literally!) making a three out of three placement. The Committee and members are thankful to Great Lakes Council for the support given in having the pool and surrounds in top condition for this popular event. Visitors from across New South Wales always comment on the delightful location of the Tea Gardens Pool nestled on the banks of the Myall River. In previous years it has been encouraging to swimmers to have people from the local community drop in to spectate. Please note that the pool will be closed to the public on Saturday, 6 February. Members recently celebrated Myall Masters outstanding success of topping the NSW Branch Pointscore, Division 2, leader board. Afterahardsessionattrainingmembers enjoyed a BBQ and cake to celebrate the Club’s promotion to Division 1. Before Club Captain, Chris Mobbs, cut the cake Coach, Leon Bobako, recognised the enthusiastic encouragement of the committee and Club Captain in getting swimmers to participate and challenge their swimming ability at Pointscore Carnivals. The old saying ‘’you’ve got to be in it to win it’’ is true. People 18 years of age and over are welcome to come to our Monday night training session at the pool from 5.30 to 7 pm and see if our Club can assist you to learn to swim or improve technique.

We are pleased to advise that our introductory Bridge lessons will commence in mid to late February and run for 6 weeks. This is an exciting opportunity for those interested in learning to play, and for those who had a few lessons last year to consolidate their knowledge of the game. We are planning to hold the lessons on Tuesday evenings (venue still to be advised) at 6.00pm with the same lesson and supervised play to be repeated on Friday at 9.30am at the Grange. The lessons are always friendly, fun and inexpensive. There are great social and mental benefits from regular playing of this fascinating game. If you are interested in participating in these lessons please contact Les Falla lesfalla@bigpond.net.au or Linda Conroy maddietg@bigpond.com.

Swimming life lesson By Rachel REITSMA
THE Tea Gardens Public Swimming Pool was busy from the 11-21 January as the NSW Sport and Recreation held its annual Swim and Survive classes. These classes are an initiative of Royal Life Saving and teaches a range of skills and knowledge to develop swimming , water safety, survival and basic rescue skills. They are intensive swimming lessons as they operated for five consecutive days and then four consecutive days the following week. The classes are designed for children aged 5-14 and Tea Gardens, Hawks Nest and Bulahdelah families took the opportunity to enrol their children in either Wonder, Courage, Active 2 or Active 3 classes. The swimming pool water was a comfortable 24 degrees Celsius most days but only a few families braved the cold day on Friday 15 January where the day time maximum temperature was 15 degrees Celsius. (The water was still a warm 24 degrees Celsius!)

THE Milo Bulahdelah Cricket Team got the chance of a lifetime and won the privilege of playing on the SCG recently. The opportunity to practice their skills at the lunchbreak during a test match was organised by one of the coaches, Erin Matheson. “We missed out last year but when the next round of applications came up I entered the Bulahdelah Cricket Team and we
received a place along with teams from Forster and the surrounding areas,” Erin explained. Ten children from the team with their parents made the journey down to Sydney for Day 2 of the Third Test between Australia and Sri Lanka on 4 January. Despite the rain, the Bulahdelah team were able to do a lap around the ground and then got to do some batting and bowling as well. CONTINUED Page 8
