Bromhead lashes at Washington

AWARDED: Karl Price, Ellie Gooch, Don Hudson (Principal)..

Outstanding in high school years ELLIE Gooch and Karl Price from Bulahdelah Central School have been awarded a Minister’s Award for Excellence in Student Achievement. These awards recognise the students’ outstanding achievements throughout their high school years, and how they

have demonstrated the core values of NSW public schools. Includes integrity, excellence, respect, responsibility, cooperation, care, fairness and democracy. There are usually only up to 40 awards presented across NSW so to have two of our students

receive this outstanding accolade is a great honour to Ellie and Karl as well as the school. Ellie and Karl are terrific young adults and are a credit to their parents, CONTINUED Page 2

MEMBER for Myall Lakes Stephen Bromhead last week took aim at the Member for Port Stephens Kate Washington for the comments she made in Parliament regarding Government MPs not taking part in a debate. Mr Bromhead said that Ms Washington was particularly critical of the Member for Upper Hunter Michael Johnson whom she claimed was “cooking a barbeque upstairs”. “For the Member for Port Stephens to attack Michael Johnson shows how desperate and naïve she is,” Mr Bromhead said. “The Member for Port Stephens obviously fails to listen, look at her emails or read the notices that have been on display across Parliament House inviting everyone in that building to attend the NSW Parliamentary Lions Club barbeque to raise funds for the Children’s Cancer Research Foundation. My Bromhead who is also the NSW Parliamentary Lions Club said, “Michael was with me cooking the barbeque. More to the point $1,000 was raised between noon and 2 pm for this very worthy cause.”

“The Member for Port Stephens’ attack on Michael Johnson was low and despicable,” he said. “Michael is a member of Lions and a volunteer with the Rural Fire Service and he knows how important it is to volunteer and lead by example. “For the member for Port Stephens to attack Michael for volunteering, for working for a great service organisation like Lions and for raising much needed funds for children’s cancer is below the belt. “It is also an attack on every Australian who volunteers and raises money for charity and she should be ashamed,” Mr Bromhead said. Myall Coast News spoke to Ms Washington and she said that the comments were made when contributing to a debate in Parliament on a Bill introduced by the government, which authorised the Government to remove the heavy rail line into Newcastle. BUSY: The intersection in and around the Myall Quays Shopping Complex.

By Dave BRAZIER FOR many residents of Myall Keys Estate, the traffic flow restrictions in Myall Quays Boulevard near the newly renamed PUMA Service Station are becoming too much to handle. Now with an increase of dangerous driving tactics by some residents and visitors to the area to avoid the run around just to get out of the Boulevard or even gain access to the Service Station, members of the local Probus Club recently discussed the matter with Chairman of the Hawks Nest – Tea Gardens Progress Association, Mr Trevor Jennings. The main restrictions include residents of Myall Keys Estate who want to utilise the PUMA Service Station having to turn out of Myall Keys Boulevard, turning right onto Myall Way then having to cross lanes and do a U-Turn near the Skate Park

precinct, before heading towards the Service Station again. Also, for residents and visitors who have used the Service Station, they have to venture to the roundabout at the end of Myall Keys Estate, perform a U-Turn and then head back again to Myall Way. Obviously due to frustration, many vehicles have been witnessed travelling on the incorrect side of Myall Way as they exit the PUMA Service Station to avoid the needless delay on the prolonged alternative route. For most it would appear that the current traffic flow arrangement was designed to be a temporary instalment, but many years on nothing has been updated. During a recent Hawks Nest – Tea Gardens Progress Association meeting, Mr Jennings displayed and discussed a temporary roundabout design

that he had submitted to council many years ago. The then Council’s Traffic Engineer refused to take any action ‘based upon the assumption that a fourway roundabout would be constructed by the developer of the Myall Downs residential development, however that developer (Creightons) no longer owns the property and the possibility of the development proceeding in the near future is debatable’. It was also discussed by those attending the meeting that initial traffic from the Riverside Estate could well worsen the current situation, and a formal request has been lodged with council to again look at the possibility of having a temporary roundabout in Myall Keys Boulevard to alleviate the problem, and increase driver and pedestrian safety in the area.

10th Wildside could be the best

q WILD WIN: Monica Moore wins the Myall Coast News Lucky Kids Prize, presented by Ian Morphett. By Ian MORPHETT IN its tenth year, the Wildside Festival was perhaps it’s most successful yet. For a start, the weather on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday was absolutely perfect with balmy temperatures, cloudless skies and very little wind. Elsa Jones’ Golf on the Wildside on Friday was very well attended with 67 players and $1,350 was raised to go to the Hawks Nest/Tea

Gardens Pre-School. On Friday evening Christian Patteson had nearly 40 spotlighting walkers who were all thrilled that he was able to find a koala for them. Saturday saw stalls and activities all around the Hawks Nest Community Hall. All stalls reported good sales and many visitors. The Lionesses, Red Cross Ladies and Newcastle Native Plant Society had excellent sales. Lee Anderson’s face painting,

Katrina Gray’s NPWS stall, the RFS fire engine, Leigh Allen’s kids craft stall and, of course, the Big Koala had droves of children supporters all day long. The Arts and Crafts, Visitor Information Centre stalls and Great Lakes Council (GLC) Isabelle Strachan’s water catchment display had lots of interest. The talks in the Old Library about koalas, “What weed is that?” and wildlife rescue were well attended. NATF’s Jill Dean’s baby possum and squirrel glider feeding

Washington’s Parliament comments FROM Page 1

Ms Washington said, “The day before the Bill was introduced, there was a rally outside Parliament House, against the closure of the rail line. “At the rally, I met with a number of people from the Upper Hunter, alongside many other people from across the Hunter, all opposed to the removal of heavy rail into Newcastle.” “Michael Johnson was not at the rally, did not speak with

Recording your Parenting Agreement – Part 1 By Ashleigh John

There are two primary ways of recording your parenting arrangements: • Parenting Plan; and • Consent Orders.

The benefits of Parenting Plans include: • They are flexible – they can easily be changed as the needs of the child (or children) and the parents change; • They are informal and do not require the involvement of lawyers or the Court. The drawbacks of Parenting Plans include: • They are not enforceable – if a parent breaches a Parenting Plan, there are no real penalties or consequences

In Part 1 of this series, we will look at Parenting Plans. Part 2 will consider The suitability of Parenting Plans for you and your children will change Consent Orders from time to time. Immediately Appointments Fridays 2pm-6pm Parenting Plans are a written following separation, there can be 191 Myall Street agreement (usually signed by the benefit in a Parenting Plan as a trial of parents) setting out what they agree the arrangements as everyone ‘finds Tea Gardens www.mullanelindsay.com.au will happen for their children. their feet’ in their new circumstances.

Better reading help

Possible new pool

q PROGRAM: Pauline Howe and a program participant enjoying the Better Reading, Better Communities Program at Forster Library.

q

CURRENT: Tea Gardens swimming pool.

By Dave BRAZIER CHRIS Lock and Leon Bobako presented an informative session at the recent Hawks Nest – Tea Gardens Progress Association meeting regarding the proposal to have an indoor Hydrotherapy Pool constructed in the future for the areas growing population. Mr Lock presented and discussed several statistics including the probability that the population in the Hawks Nest – Tea Gardens area could swell to approximately 11,000 people in the next 15 years. Given that increase in the general population, the current pool facilities would be inadequate and despite the reality that redevelopment of the current pool is quite possible, according to Mr Bobako, council would prefer to move forward with an aggregation of all local council services to a Civic Centre. Mr Bobako tabled an email received from Councillor Carol McCaskie, from Great Lakes Council, who stated that in the past 6-8 weeks Council staff have been in

discussions with developers to ascertain interest in and availability of a site which, according to Councillor McCaskie, the proposed site would need to be at least 6 hectares in size to accommodate facilities such as playing fields, a library, Council office, pool and other facilities. Councillor McCaskie has advised that Council will be preparing a concept plan which will be placed before the community for comment. Mr Bobako also stated that the local Lions Club been had also been behind a recent push for a hydrotherapy pool and it’s understood that the Lions Club has adopted this project as one of community significance. Also understanding the significance of this project, it is understood that Great Lakes Council’s General Manager, Mr Glenn Handford, will attempt to allocate time to discuss this matter at the next Community Engagement meeting in November. An attempt was made to contact Mr Handford for further comments regarding the proposal on Friday 18 September, but he was unavailable for comment.

4 MYALL COAST NEWS of the area

RESEARCH shows that people with better reading skills are more likely to have a job, more likely to be paid more, experience better health and are less likely to end up in gaol. As part of a desire to improve literacy levels in the region the Great Lakes Library Service secured funding in 2014 to train people in how to become literacy tutors. When they called for volunteers they were overwhelmed with the response. One thing led to another and a wonderful service called Better Reading Better Communities was established. Better Reading Better Communities has now come to the Myall, thanks to support from Northcoast TAFE and our Library. But what does all that mean? The cornerstone of Better Reading Better Communities is a group of enthusiastic volunteers who have been trained to help people of all ages and abilities to improve their

MyallCoastNews.com.au

reading. In the Forster-Tuncurry area these tutors are working with schools, working one-on-one with adults, reading at nursing homes, holding story time sessions at the local markets and even helping people fill out forms. Better Reading Better Communities would like to give Myall residents the same opportunity to develop the skills necessary to help people who really need reading assistance. TAFE will provide the training, the Tea Gardens Library will be the venue – the only missing ingredient is you. If you’d like to receive free training, developed by qualified TAFE teachers, in how to help people with their reading then please contact the friendly staff at Tea Gardens Library (in person or via phone on 4997 1265). The training has been developed to be undertaken online, with a special, initial

face-to-face training session to get people on the right track. This will take place on Thursday 3 December at Tea Gardens Library. There is no cost to this training (the Library is covering it) and there are no restrictions on who can participate, though there is a maximum of 20 people for the face-to-face training session. As part of the program, course participants will be registered as library volunteers, which will enable them to have free NSW police checks and working with children checks. Perhaps you know someone who could use some help with their reading. Perhaps you’d like to help local children improve their reading. Perhaps you just want to make a difference in your community. Perhaps becoming a Better Reading Better Communities literacy tutor is exactly what you’re looking for.

Caught under the influence

ABOUT 8:30pm on Friday 11 September police observed a motor vehicle travelling in an easterly direction on the The Lakes Way Pacific Palms. Police turned and followed the vehicle which entered the car park of the Pacific Palms Recreation Club.

The driver was subjected to a road side breath test which provided a positive result. He was then arrested for the purpose of a Breath Analysis and conveyed to Forster Police Station. The driver returned a Breath Analysis Sample reading of 0.077 grams of alcohol in 210 Litres of Breath and was also issued with a Field Court Attendance Notice for the offence of Drive with low range PCA 2nd offence.

Vietnam service grants program q TEAM UP: Norm Burton of Maitland and Port Stephens Toyota with Rotarian Ian MackenzieSmith showing off a Toyota Yaris 5 door automatic similar to the raffle prize. A SPOKESPERSON for the Rotary Club of Myall Coast advised that the inaugural Rotary Car or Cash Raffle continues to be popular around the Myall Region, now with less than 200 tickets left of the initial 500. “Some families are buying tickets for Christmas presents.” The raffle is heavily sponsored by the Burton Automotive Group who are close to this community and continue to find ways to give back to community initiative, like this. The first prize is a 5 door automatic Toyota Yaris. Check it out online, this is an amazing little car with fantastic features. Kim Burton told Myall Coast News, “It’s great to hear that the community is getting behind the raffle and buying up tickets.”

“Being a Pindimar resident and having a long term love for the beach lifestyle that the area provides, I’m really pleased to be in a position to give something back to the community,” he said. An alternative cash prize of $13,000 is also an option. With the limit of 500 tickets to be sold at $50, the winner’s odds beat the traditional lottery or Lotto prize. The Rotary Club will be selling locally over the upcoming school holidays plus at the upcoming Myall River Festival. FEDERAL Member for Paterson, Bob Baldwin last week announced that funding applications for initiatives that recognise the contribution of Australian servicemen and women who served our country during the Vietnam conflict are now open. The Vietnam War Commemorative Grants have been established under the Saluting Their Service Commemorative Grants Programme. Grants between $4,000 and $20,000 are available for community-based projects and activities that directly commemorate any aspect of the Vietnam War, and which focus on camaraderie.

e-Calendar Competition GREAT Lakes Council has launched the popular primary schools Australia Day e-calendar competition and is inviting all primary school students in the Great Lakes to enter this year. Entry forms will be available at every school straight after the school holidays and students have until Monday 2 November to hand their entry into their school. “The e-calendar competition is a Great Lakes Council initiative and has proven to be enormously popular over the years,” said Council’s Media Communications Officer, Ms Melissa Bawden. Now in its seventh year, the competition attracts around 800 student entries from all 13 primary schools in the Great Lakes.

This year, students are being asked to create a drawing on the theme “Our rivers, lakes and ocean are special because…”. Ms Bawden said, “Some of the questions we would like students to consider when planning their entries are: “Why are our clean waterways so important to us in the Great Lakes? Why are they important to you? Why do we need clean and healthy waterways? Are there plants and animals that make them special? What plants and animals have you seen? How do you and your family use and enjoy our waterways? What do you want them to look like when you grow up? How do you think you will enjoy them when you grow up?”

BITOU Buster (BB) volunteers joined Hawks Nest Dune Care members Michael and Adele Richie to celebrate the National Bushcare Major Day Out. Fourteen volunteers worked on the dunes along Beach Road on

Dear News Of The Area, A LOVELY long and enjoyable lunch for the Over 60’s Lunch Group, was enjoyed by twelve ladies on Friday, 28 August at Tillermans in Tea Gardens. We thank Peter for opening his restaurant especially for us and his lovely staff for providing such a really nice meal. It was very generous of them to do this for our group. We have three new ladies join us for the day: Bev Bush, Jenny Love and Jenny Hughes. These ladies have only been in the area for a few months and decided it was time to get out and join us for our luncheon days. We hope you enjoyed your day and that you will keep coming each

month. One of our ladies, Linda Nichols, has moved back to Sydney and we hope the move will be successful for her. A couple of our ladies are not too well and two are on holidays and we hope to see them next month. This time, we will be going to the Manor Café at the The Manor in Tea Gardens which has been extended to cater for more customers. I must remind everyone to please let me know by mid afternoon on the Thursday if you are coming as some venues really need to know by the night before how many are expected. This café is providing a set meal for us and it is BYO as well. Please telephone me on 4997 1614 so I can let Amanda know the final numbers. Margaret McLaren, Hawks Nest

COMMUNITY: Some of the crew at the Lend Lease Community Day.

By Rachel REITSMA LEND Lease Community Day occurred on the 19 September 2015. It is an annual event where the company who has contracts with road building come and donate time and effort to clean up and do gardening for particular community areas. This year the Lend Lease group attended to the council owned site Mountain Park.

They completed a clean up and maintenance to the area. In the past years they have also worked on the River Park in 2014, the Nursing Home gardens in 2013 and the Information Centre’s area in 2012. “For over 50 years, Lend Lease has encouraged and empowered its employees to regularly volunteer their time and expertise to assist in local communities and a variety of causes through meaningful, long-

term community partnerships,” states the NSW Volunteering Family & Community Services website. This year, at Mountain Park, the Bulahdelah Lions Club provided morning tea for the workers from Lend Lease. A lovely batch of home made scones with jam and cream were provided. Anne Chrisholm, a Lions member, was proud to participate in the event and provided the

photo of the workers enjoying the food. Arthur Baker, President of the Bulahdelah Lions Club spoke with Myall Coast News. “If groups are willing to give to our community, it is only right that we give back to them. “Morning tea is the least we can offer them if they are coming to help with cleaning and gardening and contributing to community grounds.”

DURING a recent meeting held by the Hawks Nest – Tea Gardens Progress Association (HNTGPA), a potentially deceptive statement by Mr Kumar Kuruppu, Great Lakes Council’s Manager for Design and Investigation, regarding the obstructive kerb extensions in Marine Drive between Ogden St and Coupland St, was clarified with a favourable outcome less than 24hours after this particular meeting. Initially Mr Kuruppu had stated to the Association that “removal of the traffic calming device is not required at this time. However, Council will program to remove this device during the road maintenance work at this section of Marine Drive. After being contacted by Mr Trevor Jennings, Chairman of the Hawks Nest – Tea Gardens Progress Association, Mr Kuruppu stated that ‘Council proposed to remove both facilities in Marine Drive before Christmas’. Well, Christmas appears to have come early, as Great Lakes Council Staff were observed removing these particular facilities in Marine Drive on Tuesday the 15 September, just one day after the HNTGPA meeting. Now that is progress.

FIVE of our Year 10 students from Bulahdelah Central School are completing their Certificate II in Skills for Work and Training in addition to achieving their ROSA (Record of School Achievement). Jacob Crispin, Kaitlyn Osborne, Rachel Rae, Jacob Whalen and Nelson Wrigley have been busy. As part of this program, each student is constructing a “stitch and glue” canoe, 4.2m for the boys and 3.6m for the girls. TAFE teacher, Mr Brian Jones is guiding them though the exercise. So, What is a “stitch and glue” canoe? Stitch and glue plywood canoes are where the panels are joined together with butt joins, and then the panels are ‘stitched’ together with plastic cable ties. When the canoe is all stitched together, the gunwalls are fitted and all the seams (joins) are sealed with thickened epoxy glue. The canoe is then cleaned up, painted and launched. On completion of the program, the students will not only attain a national accreditation that recognises their work-related skills, they will also have their own canoe to keep!

Family Fun Day at Tuncurry THE showers held off Tuncurry’s John Wright Park for the activities at the Family Fun Day held to raise awareness and funds for the second annual Prostate Cancer Foundation Support Groups in Forster and the Manning. Joining the day were popular local musician Matt Zarb, Australia’s Marching Koalas, Taree’s PCYC Gymaroos, the Great Lakes Pipe Band, Prime7 Possum who was a big hit with the littlies, and 2RE’s breakfast host Anthony Zanos who was the MC for the day. Member for Myall Lakes Stephen Bromhead, whose idea led to the day being held, was delighted at the turnout of people who came to listen and watch the entertainment and to hear from local medical specialists, urologist Dr Ben Kwok and oncologist Dr Ted Livshin. Mr Bromhead said the colour, music and skills sown by the entertainers drew the crowds in to learn more about prostate cancer which is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in men. “Everyone who participated were volunteers who had willingly given their time and talent to make the day such a great event,” Mr Bromhead said. “Amongst so many contributors to the day, the seven local Men’s Sheds provided colour and talent in displaying the items they made and the auction of their projects raised in excess of $1,200. “The day was about two important things: raising awareness with men about the need to have

regular checks of their prostates; and to raise funds for the Prostate Cancer Foundation and the Support Groups in our region. “A disturbing fact mentioned by the doctors is that in Australia more men die from prostate cancer, than women die from breast cancer. “I want to thank the two doctors who gave their time and answered questions about the importance of men seeking regular prostate checks. “I am delighted to say that more than $7,000 was raised on the day and this money will go to the Foundation and its Support Groups to assist their development activities.” “I also thank the hundreds

of people who came along and applauded the singers, bands, entertainers and gymnasts. “Whenever there is a worthy cause like this, people in the Great Lakes and Manning recognise and get behind the effort involved,” Mr Bromhead said. In a wonderful display of empathy and support for prostate cancer, the original first prize raffle winner donated the prize of tickets to the 2015 V8 Supercar Sydney 500 worth $8,000 to Forster Marine Rescue. Unit Commander Mike Thomas was extremely grateful for the generous gesture and said Forster Marine Rescue will raffle the prize to raise funds for more equipment.

Public facilities upgrade Nabiac & Bulahdelah

towards the cost of upgrading power and water supplies at the Nabiac Showground. The total project is estimated to cost $398,860. The Nabiac and District Swimming Pool Committee will receive $20,444 to surface the toddler wet play area at the swimming pool complex. The Bulahdelah Showground Committee will receive $50,000 to help replace termite damaged light poles and obsolete lighting at Bulahdelah Showground. The Bulahdelah Showground Committee will be contributing a further $30,000 towards labour and materials to complete the job.

GREAT Lakes Council is pleased that three projects - at Nabiac and Bulahdelah showgrounds, and the Nabiac Swimming Pool - can proceed thanks to a NSW Government grant. The recently announced grants totalling $447,634 for three projects under the Public Reserves Management Fund Program (PRMFP) will allow Council and community groups to undertake much needed improvements and maintenance. “Council looks forward to working with community groups to assist in the delivery of these projects,” said Manager of Parks and Recreation, Mr Andrew Staniland. Council will receive $377,190

Twenty-five people – locals and visitors from as far as Perth – were led by Jill and Peter Madden and Adrienne Ingram along the beautiful Michael Rowe Memorial Walk on Saturday 12 September. They were treated to one of the best displays of local wild flowers in recent years as they walked a four kilometre loop from near the Mungo Brush Road entry to the Myall Lakes National Park south to Bennetts Beach. Pre-season fire preparation training on at Bulahdelah

MORE than 80 forest fire fighters will converge on Bulahdelah over two days, on Wednesday 23 and Thursday 24 September, for pre-season fire preparation training. Forestry Corporation of NSW's Fire Management Officer Cameron Wade said these preseason preparation training events being held throughout the State were important to ensure staff were prepared for this summer. "All of our preparations from hazard reduction burning in State forests to pre-season preparation training events are a reminder we're taking no chances in our preparation for this summer,” Mr Wade said. "This fire preparation training event in Bulahdelah will bring Forestry Corporation’s seasonal fire fighters as well as fulltime staff together in one place to share and test their firefighting knowledge and capabilities.

"Our forest fire fighters play an important role in managing, preventing and fighting fires in regional communities and State forests and we need to be confident they are fully prepared through training scenarios, and also, fit and able to manage the physical pressures of the fire line. “Forestry Corporation invests heavily in training and retaining firefighting staff and equipment, upgrading roads for rapid access to forests and building and staffing fire towers to aid rapid fire detection and quick response. "We will also work with other fire agencies as part of the State's coordinated firefighting effort." Forestry Corporation is responsible for more than two million hectares of native and plantation forests and has been involved in firefighting in NSW for almost 100 years.

TUESDAY 15 September: It was almost like summer today with a hot breezy day. It gave us an insight into what to expect in the coming months. There were 28 bowlers in attendance for our social bowls. The format being, four games of triples and one game of pairs. The winners with the highest margin were; Carolyn Bywater, Robin Webster and Pat Baker, Our annual Encology Day is fast approaching, it will be held on Friday 25 September. EVERY season of weather was encountered during the latest social fishing weekend. 18 – 20 September proved a tough weekend for anglers. The outright social outing winner and mens division winner was Andrew Sharp who caught a great swag of luderck and bream. The mens division runner up was Jeremy Wolfram. The social outing ladies division winner was Jessica Slow weighing a bream and a luderick. The ladies division runner up was Karen Glynn who weighed four beautiful bream. The mystery fish of a kingfish was not won and will compound to $30.00 next social fishing outing. Great fishing

to come and join us. It really is a great day and is for a very good cause. Prizes galore to be won! On Thursday 17 September: Well today looked like it was going to another fine day for bowling. How wrong can we be? About 11 O’clock there was a great clap of thunder, and that more or less marked the end of bowling for the day. Eight ends were played, disappointing but we have no control over the weather. There were 16 regular bowlers attend today. We also had four visitors, they were, Rusty Sargeant and Susan Gate from Bulahdelah, and Judy McGavock and Rhonda Sadovsky. Welcome to our club. The winners, drawn from the cards were; Joan Hanson, Rusty Sargeant and Liz Kelly.
