Oyster and Timber Festival draws crowd for a range of activities

By Dave BRAZIER

TIMBER chips were flying to the sky and oysters were being supplied as the mercury rose last Saturday at the Karuah Oyster and Timber Festival. Longworth Park next to the bridge was a buzz of activity, smiling faces and with the best weather thrown into the mix, the organisers and visitors couldn’t have ever wished for a better family day out by the shores of Port Stephens and lower Great Lakes area. Myall Coast News wandered around and chatted with the crowd for a few hours and left feeling like the festival has well and truly put Karuah on the map again as a fantastic destination and attraction hot spot in NSW.

So, what’s it worth? HOMEBUYERS in the Great Lakes and Myall Coast areas will have greater protection when purchasing a property, with strengthened laws set to clamp down on real

estate underquoting passing NSW Parliament this week. Member for Myall Lakes Stephen Bromhead said the reforms deliver on the NSW Government’s 2015

election commitment to crackdown on underquoting in real estate transactions. “The NSW Government committed to overhauling the

current laws to crackdown on the practice of real estate underquoting – and we have delivered,” Mr Bromhead said. “Surprisingly, there have been

no successful prosecutions related to underquoting made under this Act in 13 years, so this reform is long overdue. CONTINUED Page 2

“You only need to talk to potential buyers at auctions every weekend to hear their frustration with property underquoting in the market. “Not only are homebuyers dealing with an increasingly competitive market but they often feel completely misled when it comes to the price of properties they are interested in buying, which is pushing their dream of home

If a price range is used, the highest price must not be more than 10% higher than the lowest price; ·Advertisements and representations that say “offers over” or “offers above” or any similar statement will be prohibited; ·Agents will be required to keep a register of prices quoted on a property whether these are provided to the vendor or prospective purchasers.

In addition to the existing penalty of $22,000, agents found guilty of underquoting will be liable to forfeit any commission or fees from the sale. “In the current market this will mean that the loss of commissions will, in some cases, be more than the existing penalty,” Mr Bromhead said. “There can be no doubt that introducing this legislation will stamp out bad practice within the real estate industry.”

KARUAH & DISTRICT RSL CLUB

IT was reported in Myall Coast News in an earlier edition that Pacific Palms Public School were in training to participate in a Fun Run to raise money for sports equipment and to have an emphasis on healthy food and exercise. This Adidas School Fun Run happened in the last week of Term 3 and Lani Williams, a teacher at the school, did a fabulous job coordinating the event, organising community support and focusing entirely on participation. Students seeked sponsorship, with the aim to run as many laps as they could in 45 minutes.

The saga at North Hawks Nest

Karuah Local Aboriginal Land Council. Various studies were undertaken and it appeared that the land was to be rezoned as conservation and handed to National Park. This rightly was seen by most as land grab by stealth and accusations that various studies undertaken were fraudulent. One of the studies claimed that it was high Emu habitat (threatened species on the coast) after an emu scat was purported to be found and therefore none of the land Deputy Mayor should be developed and all the land should be simply handed Cr over to National Parks. This claim crumpled after I revealed publicly, information given to THE proposed rezoning of north me by a long long term resident, that Hawks Nest for conservation and there was indeed Emus in the National development appears closer with Park, but they were introduced to the council considering the way forward park in the 1980’s from out west. at its last strategic meeting. They multiplied and became a The North Hawks Nest saga has nuisance and all were eventually shot been dragging on for over 15 years by NP rangers. since the land was zoned for future This information, coupled with urban development in the 1990’s. claims of fraud by prominent scientist The land identified was in the Dr Graeme Wells and others led to ownership of 15 landowners (or council calling for an investigation. groups of landowners owning a The State Government ordered a particular landholding) including

public inquiry into the matter in the early 2000’s. The inquiry acknowledged that some of the studies were deficient (stopped short of calling it fraud) and with an expert panel of scientists, ecologists (including Dr Wells) representing government departments and landholders came up with a planning outcome that allowed for conservation and development. In order for development to go ahead land as a conservation offset was to be dedicated to National Parks. Whilst Dr Wells generally accepted the outcome, he was still (and rightly so) upset that his scientific reputation may have been damaged as he had been the main “whistleblower” regarding the deficient and incorrect studies and that no punitive action was taken against the authors of those deficient studies. Unfortunately, that is water under the bridge and whilst I feel for Dr Wells, it is time to move on and realise the benefits of rezoning Nth Hawks Nest. In the meantime, the council, and for most part the landowners and the overall community were satisfied with the plan. A developer entered into agreements with the landowners to

develop the land and all appeared on track until the GFC and the developer was unable to proceed. For the last few years the matter has been sitting waiting for the Department of Planning to sign off as soon as the offset arrangements could be finalised. Last year Council was advised that NP no longer wanted the offset land and therefore the whole plan looked sunk and everyone would have to start again from scratch. The Department of planning kept the plan alive and asked council to come up with a way to ensure the development and conservation of the land in perpetuity. Since that time according to notes from council staff: The landowners have continued to meet and there have been meetings betweenstaffandthelandowners. They have prepared a draft Memorandum of Understanding to indicate they will work corroboratively to progress the rezoning. The Office of Environment and Heritage has formally advised that, for resourcing reasons, they are unable to accept the offset land. A letter was sent to, and a meeting was held between staff and

Kate Washington, Member for Port Stephens on 16 July 2015. The purpose of the letter and meeting was to establish the government’s formal position on the acceptance of the offset land. No response has been received from Ms Washington. Council staff met with the Department of Planning and Environment and the Office of Environment and Heritage on four (4) occasions since February 2015 to discuss how to progress the rezoning. At the meetings it was made clear that Council strongly supports the rezoning of the area. Council has kept the Department informed on the progress with the rezoning. Some of the landowners have now submitted a proposal for staging of the development and dedication of the offset area. Council at its last strategic meeting resolved to accept the offset land and write to the landowners advising them that it was now possible to proceed to the finalisation of the rezoning and were they still interested in being involved. Staff will report back to council within six weeks outlining hopefully the final steps for rezoning.

Water week awareness Under the Good ol’ seat switch influence

ABOUT 5.15pm on Sunday 18 October 2015, a 42 year old Wootton man was stopped south of the Wootton Way intersection of the Pacific Highway driving a Ford sedan. He submitted to a random roadside breath test. This test returned a positive reading and he was arrested and conveyed to Bulahdelah police station where he submitted to a breath analysis. The analysis returned a reading of 0.073 grams of alcohol in 210 litres of breath. The male was issued with a court to attend Forster Local Court in December.

AT 4pm 16 October 2015 police patrolling The Lakes Way at Bungwahl observed a white Toyota utility, parked on the northern verge of the carriage way with a male person entering the driver’s seat and a female entering the front passenger seat. Police stopped behind the vehicle a short time later with the male and female quickly exchanging seats within the vehicle to give the appearance that the female was driving. Police then made enquiries and discovered the male was driving on a suspended licence. He was advised that he would be required to attend court as a result of the matter.

ROTARY International is pleased to announce a World Polio Day event on 23 October 2015 . This event, co-sponsored by UNICEF , will bring together partners in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative , government officials and Global Health leaders from non-government organisations and many Rotarians and supporters. July and August brought great milestones in the polio eradication effort . For the first time in history, Nigeria – then all of Africa – marked one year with no new polio cases caused by the wild virus. Rotary is close to making good on its promise to end polio forever, but there is still work to be done. As the progress made in Africa is consolidated, the focus shifts more sharply to Afghanistan and Pakistan. Polio is a highly infectious disease causing paralysis . As there is no cure, the best protection is prevention. With US 60 cents worth of vaccine, a child can be protected for life. Given the Community’s generous contribution to the Club’s Monster Car/Cash raffle heavily sponsored by the Burton Automotive Group (with now less than 100 of the 500 tickets still to be sold), the Rotary Club of Myall Coast will make a $500 contribution on the Community’s behalf to the World Wide Polio Eradication programme. This donation will be matched 2 to 1 by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation .

CHRISTMAS is coming, and I accept this may not be what a lot of people want to hear just yet, and quite frankly I’m with them as it seems like only a few weeks ago we celebrated last Christmas. I did however become quite excited when I called in to Karuah RSL recently and spotted the biggest Christmas Hamper I have ever seen. I wasn’t far off the mark with my thinking as Ross Parr, Secretary Manager of Karuah RSL explained to me that, “This years Christmas Hamper will be the biggest Christmas Hamper offered anywhere on the Mid North Coast.” “Just like previous years we have tried to go bigger and better, offering more each year. The big day for both members and even non-members to have their chance of winning some fantastic prizes in the hamper is only about a month away, and will be held on Sunday 22 November, and the draw starting at 2pm sharp. Ross Parr stated to Myall Coast News, “It’s one of our biggest days of the year, nearly as big as ANZAC Day, and we have people come from all over. Last year a group from Boolaroo in Lake Macquarie hired a bus for the day and travelled North to be with us for a day of fun.” “Some people were even outside the club at 8.30am keen to get their spot and spent the entire day here, you really must get in early if you want to win,” he said.

Reading for school fund BETWEEN 23 November and 4 December, Bulahdelah Central School students will be participating in the School Read-a-Thon to raise vital extra funds for their school. The reading-based school fundraiser launched earlier this year and focuses on improving student literacy skills in a fun and enjoyable way while also raising money for new resources. In the coming weeks students will be seeking support from the local community for participating in the event and sponsorship is vital to make their fundraiser a success.

Hannah ArcherLawton from Bulahdelah Central School said the School Reada-Thon presents an excellent platform to get students enthusiastic about reading. “We are excited to be involved in a program that delivers positive messages about the importance of reading and improving literacy.” General Manager of The Fundraising Group, Brendan Hopp, said it’s wonderful that schools have taken to this new fundraiser and we’re proud to be able to offer a fundraising program that supports the

school curriculum. “Together with the School Fun-Run, schools can now choose one of two full support fundraising programs that either promote a healthy body or healthy mind philosophy, which is what we’re all about.” “Plus with the help of our online fundraising partner, Everyday Hero, students are able to reach family and friends living interstate or overseas to increase their fundraising efforts,” he said. Electricity tariff charge STEPHENBromheadisencouraging residents and businesses in Great Lakes to respond to call for input by Essential Energy on proposed electricity tariff charges that will apply from 2017 – 2019. Mr Bromhead said as the electricity distributor for the region, Essential Energy supplies electricity to energy retailers along the poles and wires that remain in public ownership in regional NSW. “Network tariffs charged by electricity distributors such as Essential Energy and comprise about 40 per cent of electricity bills received by residents and business in Myall Lakes,” Mr Bromhead said. “These charges are passed on

to customers by electricity retailers. The remainder of your electricity bill is made up of the retail, generation and renewable energy scheme costs, like the solar bonus scheme and it is the retailer who decides the final cost of your electricity bill. “NSW electricity distributors must show their proposed 2017-2019 tariff structures to the AustralianEnergyRegulator in November 2015. “Essential Energy and the other distributors are inviting input and I encourage everyone to

take up the opportunity to have a say in response to the Issues Paper.”

To beach or not to beach

q ADVICE: Patrick Johnson from Australian Coastal Walls.

An Australian Coast Wall suggestion may work, but may not be the popular choice. By Dave BRAZIER HEARING of the continued erosion problems that Jimmys Beach and Winda Woppa residents have had to endure, South African born Patrick Johnson, from Australian Coastal Walls, has again offered his product as a viable solution to fix the problems once and for all. Of particular interest as a possible remediation tool, Australian Coastal Walls products include an interlocking concrete retaining block system, of which it’s original design has been widely used in Europe and South Africa for over 30 years, and has now been adapted and redesigned for use in Australia. Speaking with Myall Coast

News, Patrick Johnson said, ”I have been working closely with this product for decades and am of the belief it will solve the erosion issues at Jimmys Beach and Winda Woppa once and for all.” “I have previously discussed my product with Council but they didn’t appear to be interested which is a shame, as all the money wasted on dumping rocks and sand in the area all this time could have been used just once using the products we supply at Australian Coastal Walls,” he said. “The products interlock and have the ability to absorb wave impact and disperse water by draining it through the wall structure. Each block weighs 70kgs and they can be vegetated and coloured to blend

with the local environment. Mr Johnson also added, “There are 19 other ‘hot spots’ in NSW where erosion issues are getting out of control, we are looking at assisting those areas also. I have a meeting with the Prime Minister of Fiji coming soon, who apparently is also very interested to use our products.” A.C.W submitted some of their products to Manly Hydraulics Laboratory which is a division of NSW Public Works for testing and their results, as stated on a report issued in 2014 and visible on the A.C.W website, would appear to report that the A.C.W interlocking concrete retaining block products are highly suitable for resisting erosion issues even in 1 in a 100 year events.

Upon being contacted by Myall Coast News regarding the products suggested by Australian Coastal Walls, Great Lakes Council’s Director of Engineering, Mr Ron Hartley said, “Great Lakes Council has considered coastal wall installations from numerous suppliers as an option for controlling erosion on Jimmys Beach.“ “These systems would

mean the beach would be removed and a sea wall would be installed. However, the community has indicated many times that the beach is a significant facility and their desire is to retain it,” he said. ”Council has previously engaged consultants to undertake studies examining options such as groynes, offshore reefs and reinforcing walls. All of these studies

indicate that, if the community wants to retain Jimmys Beach as a sandy beach, then sand renourishment will be required in conjunction with any other form of physical protection.” “Hence, the capital cost of a physical protection system cannot be justified at this time. The outcomes of these studies have been supported by a number of NSW Government Departments,” he said.

Coral Trees continues

Dear News Of The Area, IF you haven’t heard through your contacts, council is as determined as ever to remove the shade -producing waterfront Coral trees . Imminently . They could even be gone by the time you read this. Reports written late last year claimed they were an environmental weed and extremely dangerous. Old news and obviously the trees have not read those reports . We know that in this position, they cannot spread. And by now according to the reports the trees should already be dead or toppled over. But nature has well and truly proven their resilience. Having survived all sorts of weather unscathed they are thriving . Yet so many other shade trees in town have failed. So much for the reports. The timing of the latest proposal is disturbing . Has history repeated itself so quickly? The “sneeky” attempt which resulted in the chain gang was the same time

last year ....that is just before the summer. This year at least we know two figs will be planted. But how untimely. Who will water those figs over the coming summer in that infertile salty dry soil? Unless a deep watering system is in place, locally autumn is the time to plant trees in public areas. The autumn and winter rains help them establish themselves then they take off later in the year . Furthermore we are in an El Nino year just about to come in to full swing. The Bureau of Meteorology ( BOM) predicted this way back in April. They have been warning those who bother to listen ever since. Hot El-nino summers surprise many of us and bite us like snakes. They tend to hit with a vengeance after cold wet winters. Such a winter we've had , so my prediction is on par with BOM's - that a daunting summer is just around the corner. Under that scenario

what local or visitor in their right mind would want to utilize a shadeless landscape with two replacement plants struggling to establish? With my local horticultural knowledge, I have previously advocated a simple solution to the Coral tree dilemna. That is plant suitable replacement species at the correct time of year. Plant them in between the coral trees or even under them - as the shade of the Coral Tree will protect the new tree . Wait till the replacements are tall enough to produce their own shade then remove the coral trees as needed. It is so simple it is scary and I cannot understand the fuss. Why won't council admit they may have this one wrong, change courses and regain the trust of the community on this issue ? I suspect there may be a lot of popularity and votes involved. Area could be an asset Dear News Of The Area,

MY congratulations to the volunteers for the clean up of the pond area at the entrance to Myall Quays. It is an isolated area as it does not apparently come under the jurisdiction of the Shopping centre as such. The area has been very neglected since Creighton’s sold the property. It has become a dumping area for the Coles car Park instead of the rubbish being cleaned and put in the bin.

The rubbish is blown out of the car park into the adjoining area by a very noisy blower. The area could be an asset as an entrance to Tea Gardens, if the Dolphins were cleaned up and the area could be kept tidy. In the past people would stop and take photos of the Dolphin”s and the Fountain”s and the circulation of the water helped to keep the pond in reasonable condition. With the decline of the quality of the area there are no

more frogs or Ducks visiting. if the politics of the matter could be forgotten It would be a very small outlay for the council to run a mower over it and spend a little time to enhance the entrance to our TEA GARDENS. The remains of the tree from the April storm could be removed, unfortunately the volunteers were not equipped to do this but they did a great job. Geoff Cash Tea Gardens

Following the sewer dismay Dear News Of The Area,

I AM a joint owner of house in Yamba Street Hawks Nest and have followed with great interest and dismay the discussion on the Proposed Recycled Sewage IrrigationYamba Street Myall Park Hawks Nest. I have been unable to attend the previous on-site meetings but this does not indicate in any way my lack of concern about what you propose to do. In fact I find it worrying that MidCoast Water and local Council continue to want spray drift of recycled

water falling onto our homes and local sporting facilities. Mr Brauer refers to the “recycled water produced as being of a very high standard”, however, we all know that recycled water is of a “ lower grade “ and contrary to what you say in his email dated 30/9/15, there is EVERY reason that that the proposed irrigation system is a “ public nuisance’. I read with great concern that Mr Philippe Porigneax (Environmental Health Manager for MidCoast Water) who was present at the on-site meeting on 9/10/15, “made it quite

clear the Recycled Water Spray must be stopped from coming into contact with our families & our properties that we are entitled to use at any time”. It is my request that the superiors NOT proceed with this Proposed Recycle Sewage Irrigation scheme. The turf on Myall Park is in good condition and has been for most previous years and that has been sustained with the existing watering system and natural rain fall. A NOTE to endorse the comments of Gordon Grainger, (Myall Coast News Edition 15 October, “Let’s Get Fairdinkum”). Residents are very disappointed with the time Council has taken to implement upgrades to the Tea Gardens foreshore. Nine (9) months ago in late January 2015 we were advised that plans were in place to source and plant trees. We understand that two (2) trees are in town but they are ‘still settling

into their new environment’ away from the foreshore. At the same time, nine (9) months ago, commitments were made to erect shelters, essential to provide much needed for shade, as well as additional seating. Regrettably no new trees or shelters are in place and summer is again upon us. We do however have new garbage bins, which came as a surprise to most, and whilst these are ascetically more attractive they provide considerably less rubbish capacity.

You’re invited

The original bins strategically placed near boat ramps, food outlets and seats along the river have been removed. Why? Would Council please provide residents with a time frame of when the shelters, trees etc. will be erected and planted. If there are no funds available to carry out the commitments made by Council in early 2015, please tell us. Chris Bournon Tea Gardens

More calls to the Nota about the Pelicans By Dave BRAZIER

q

SINGING Bridge is proving once again to be popular with a number of pelicans roosting on top of the street lights on both sides of Singing Bridge that connects Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest. Myall Coast News noticed a few of the regular feathered visitors were back in force last week, with up to 20 birds taking advantage of what must be prime real estate for the birds in the area. Walking over the bridge the defection and mess the pelicans are causing is, while not picture worthy,

Water survey

THE picture is almost complete – but for the last important pieces it is over to the community to assist MidCoast Water in finalising their 30 year strategy for providing water services to our area. MidCoast Water, the water and sewer authority for the Manning, Great Lakes and Gloucester areas, has been looking at the options available to deliver water security for the future as part of their Our Water Our Future review. The Our Water Our Future Strategy is MidCoast Water’s 30 year plan that outlines how the organisation will work to manage water resources for generations to come. And while MidCoast Water is committed to undertaking a range of education programs and continuing rebates for rainwater tanks in response to feedback from earlier surveys – larger solutions will also be required. “We have combined community feedback with cost estimates and technical knowledge to create a number of scenarios and we now ask our communities to help us decide which of the scenarios will be the most acceptable plan for the future,” acting general manager Brendan Guiney explained. Now MidCoast Water wants to know which of the solutions - new water storages, desalination or indirect potable reuse - appeal to our community. “All the scenarios have costs associated with them, and now we are asking our community to look at those costs, and how they may impact on their water account and let us know which are the most acceptable to them.” Members of the community are encouraged to go to www.midcoastwater. com.au and take part in the final Our Water Our Future survey.

understands this plan never eventuated into action. Whilst there have been many suggestions on how to control the pelicans movements, with some groups opposing the installation of the spikes suggested by Essential Energy, the birds continue to come, sit, and.. yeah, that other thing. Great Lakes Council and Essential Energy spokespersons were contacted for comment on Friday 16 October and are yet to respond - we will keep you updated with progress on this issue.

Domestic violence group MEMBER for Myall Lakes Stephen Bromhead has been appointed to the new Parliamentary Friends of the Prevention of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault group which has been formed by members of NSW Parliament in Sydney this week. Mr Bromhead has been elected as a deputy chair of the group along with two further deputy chairs Dr Mehreen Faruqi MLC and Ms Trish Doyle MP. The Hon Natasha Maclaren-Jones MLC is chair and membership is open to all MPs. “This is a bi-partisan group which is important as the issues of domestic violence and sexual assault are critical to every community in NSW and it gives both sides of parliament the opportunity to work together,” Mr Bromhead said. “The formation of the group is an important step forward and follows the appointment of Australia’s first-ever Minister for the Prevention of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault, Hon

Of course the local oyster growers like Cole Brothers, who were one of the sponsors the festival, were totally run off their feet with tastings and selling their best Sydney Rock Oysters to the swarm of visitors. Cole Brothers also sponsored the inaugural ‘Oyster Eating Competition’ which was a crowd and participant favourite event allowing oyster lovers the chance to eat a dozen oysters in the quickest time with a hope of elevating themselves onto the final rounds. The stalls and displays this year were excellent and included the Karuah R.F.S, Port Stephens Council, the Police Citizens Youth Club van including Police Officers from Nelsons Bay and even Lake Macquarie were on hand offering advice to the youth of the area. A variety of clothing, arts, crafts and specialty goods were offered for sale at the

stalls and if you went home hungry there was something wrong,..the array of food available was excellent, and in particular the Tea Gardens LIONS Club were cooking up a storm at their site. The wood chopping events are a very competitive feature of the Festival and it was great to see a big line up of choppers all vying for the ‘Darrell Johnson Memorial Trophy’ that is proudly displayed in the Karuah RSL. Young and old they lined up, sweated, chopped,…and chopped some more on some timber. One by one with precision blows each of the blocks hit the ground. Some with relative ease and while some struggled to split the blocks in two, they never gave up until the end which was celebrated with applause from the crowd. Easier for seniors All better

MEMBER for Myall Lakes Stephen Bromhead said today that the NSW Government is delivering on another election commitment to make life easier for seniors in the Great Lakes region. Mr Bromhead said that across NSW, the NSW Government is providing a $4 million funding boost to improve accessibility in local communities. “The Liveable Communities Grants is a four year program, which encourages local councils, non-government organisations and small businesses to improve accessibility and mobility for seniors,” Mr Bromhead said. “The government is looking for innovative ideas and solutions to help increase the participation of older people in the community so that they can lead rewarding and active lives. “Liveable communities enable everyone, regardless of age or ability, to lead active, independent and healthy lives. “In particular, we know that being able to access their community freely and safelymakes a huge difference to the lives of older people, but it takes a community effort to achieve this outcome.

“That’s why we are calling on a wide-range of groups including nongovernment organisations, academics, entrepreneurs, small businesses and local councils to define what it will mean to ‘age well’ now and into the future. The government also needs ideas on suggested approaches for creating more liveable communities. “Myall Lakes is a popular destination for retirees and as we have the highest proportion of people aged 65 and over in NSW, it is vital that we do more now to make their lives easier,” Mr Bromhead said. Successful entries will be assessed on the level of innovation; understanding of the community; potential for creating sustainable longterm solutions; and must address one of the following categories: · Helping people stay healthy; · Helping people stay connected; · Helping people work or contribute; · Helping people live where they want to. Applications close on 12 November 2015 and winning entries will be determined by an expert panel and further details can be found at www. ageing.nsw.gov.au/home.

Recently a group of local Aboriginal women completed a literacy tutoring course, conducted by Michelle Reed. The tutors learned how to use the interests, needs and goals of a person to help them improve their reading and writing. They were also taught how to help people who need a hand with reading forms or letters, completing applications and reading medicines and prescriptions. It was highly appropriate that the course took place in Aunty Mae’s Hut on the Great Lakes TAFE Campus. The course was developed and delivered by the TAFE, using funds provided by the Friends of the Great Lakes Library Service.

q COMMUNITY: Aboriginal literacy tutors Kelly Ridgeway, Ketika Simon, Mandy Davis, Rayleigh Avery, Amy Weatherel, Lena Donnelly, Liahna French, Amanda Barker (child in front is Lamar Currie). “We’re thrilled with the support we’ve had from the local Aboriginal community for the Better Reading Better Communities project,” says Library Manager Chris Jones. “And we really appreciate the time and effort that all the students put into completing the course -we thank you. This can

only lead to good things for the local community.” There have already been some great flow-on effects from the course. One of the participants got a job at a local school and the whole group has gone on to study a Certificate II in skills for working in the community sector.

The championships have now commenced and two rounds have been played on a Friday and first Monday round played on 12 October (both consist of three rounds where players keep their best two). Diggers Day at the Pub. Great turn out by the Diggers Bridge Players from over the Bay and many of our members. Despite a few small hiccups to start the day the event was enjoyed by all players who opted to play maximum number of boards. Thanks to the Pub for great set up and lunch

THE second week of nine hole daylight saving social golf saw Ian Ingram win for the second time from two rounds. 2 for 2. The runner up social golfer was Leon Katz. The nearest to the pin was Jed Malone, also for the second week in a row.2 for 2. The raffle winner was Warren Jones.

OCTOBER 14: Today the Tea Gardens Tree X Tree team travelled down to Lowlands to take on their Grade 3 (1) side in Round 6 of the Newcastle District Three X Three competition. It was to be do or die for both teams and Tea Gardens were determined that it was not going to be them. Winning the toss was a good sign, and was just a small foretaste of what was to come. The team of John Slater, Ron Green and Max Stephens picked up a 4 on the second end and maintained a lead right through the game winning 13 of the 20 ends played and coming away with a comprehensive 22-13 win. Great effort! The side of Neil Kibble, Col Amos and Dave Rimmer were completely ruthless pinning the hapless Lowlands down the whole game where at the penultimate end they led 21-5. To that stage they had won 15 from the 20 ends played. They conceded a 2 on the last end to wrap up the game 21-7. Brilliant! The stampede continued with the Tea Gardens team of Doug Naylor, Danny Johnson and Sean Mearrick taking their time to get into the game. They were tied at 10-10 at the 12th end

then caught Lowlands napping when they released an onslaught of shots piling on 16 to Lowlands 2 over the last 9 ends. They won 26-12. Wow!! The overall Master Board score; Tea Gardens 69 – Lowlands 32. Tea Gardens Three X Threes take a breather next week having a wellearned bye whilst the remaining six teams fight it out. Depending on results next week, Tea Gardens seem likely to make the top 4 or 5 of the competition. A massive effort! Back at Tea Gardens 34 bowlers played 5 games of triples and 1 game of pairs in perfect conditions. Play occupied both greens. The winners, on a countback on +34 were the pairs team of; Paul Cater and Brian Seamen (Visitor). Runners –up also on +34 were; Bill Bridges, John Yabsley and Alan Greenhalgh. October 16: The Friday Jackpot Pairs was played today with 16 bowlers taking part on a beautiful sunny day. The winners with the highest margin were; Harry Hauben and Terry Eyles on +7 Runners-up , on +5, were; Vick Garlick and Brian Seamen. Both jackpots were not won with the respective “pots” next week being $200.00 and $60.00.
