Men and women suitably honoured for their Service

By Daniel SAHYOUN HUNDREDS of Myall Coast students have honoured the men and women who have served our country at School ANZAC Ceremonies held at the end of last term. At Tea Gardens Primary School, Principal Mr Mark Clemson welcomed RSL Members Mrs Jenny Ross, Mr Ted Mowbray and Mr Ray Prigg who shared their personal service experiences with the students. Mrs Ross spoke about the way soldiers were disciplined, whilst Mr Prigg described his experiences as a truck driver during the Vietnam War. Mr Mowbray shared a piece of his personal history by showing his father’s tin hat before speaking about the famous Spitfire Aeroplane.

Many students were involved in the ceremony with Year 3 Rattlesnakes presenting the story of Manfred von Rochthofen, known as the Red Baron. At Bulahdelah Central School, Principal Mr Don Hudson welcomed RSL Members Mr Peter Millen and Mr Steve Newman before reflecting on the significance of ANZAC. “Today we recognise the men and women who have served our country, who have given so much to make sure our way of life continues,” Mr Hudson said. “It’s important to take the time to celebrate the successes we have had, but also recognise the loss of lives.” CONTINUED Page 7

FIGHTING: Sophie Grill and smile hides her courageous battle.

Rare cancer targets kids By Daniel SAHYOUN SOPHIE Grills looks like every other four-year-old girl,

with her infectious smile and short dark hair. But Sophie’s smile hides a battle with a rare

form of cancer known as Pineoblastoma, discovered when she was just two-years old.

Only seven people worldwide have this cancer, and Sophie is the only person in Australia. The Bulahdelah toddler has endured numerous surgeries to remove a tumour, blood transfusions and ten months of chemotherapy. With no known treatments, Sophie’s parents Robert and Rebecca were told to expect the worst. “We thought we were going to lose her, she didn’t even know we were there,” Rebecca said. “It was very hard telling Sophie’s four siblings their sister might not survive.” Sophie and her family have since returned home, but extensive double doses of chemo have taken a destructive toll. Sophie’s muscles are incredibly weak, and she has to learn to walk and talk again. Her ongoing treatment requires regular journeys to Sydney and three weekly trips to Taree. Sophie’s treatment is not listed on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) so the family must pay for treatments themselves. A report from Rare Cancers Australia (RCA) released in March, reveals rare cancers kill one child every four days making it the number one killer of Australian children. CONTINUED Page 4

SNAPPED: Glen Henry has been behind the camera since 2004.

Self taught and good advice By Dave BRAZIER

looking at, and capture the moment perfectly for the world to enjoy and be inspired. One Tea Gardens photographer has been doing just that for just over 12 years and has built a very healthy fan base

THERE are certain times every day in the Myall Coast region where some people have a totally different approach and perspective to what they are

for his works capturing nature at its absolute finest. Glen Henry, from Tea Gardens, has been ‘dabbling’ in photography since 2004 where the photos he took during a trip to Broome in W.A, and the

landscapes of the area, kindled an interest in professional photography and his passion continues to grow today. Having seen many of Glen’s sensational images, Myall Coast News Of The Area couldn’t help but ask him about how he started, how did he learn his art and whether he has received any awards for his chosen profession. Glen said, “I am self taught, with a lot of help by researching other photographers techniques on You-Tube and completing some tutorials that are available on the internet.” “I have taken my photography a lot more seriously in the last few years, and looking forward to showcasing our beautiful environment to the wider community so it’s not taken for granted,” he said. Asked whether he has received any awards for his works, Glen said, “I have never received any awards or prizes for my work , I’m not really into that side of things. I have had some good recognition from peers and now have had some exposure on NBN 9 weather shots, 18 of my images have been shown during the weather segment on NBN News so far.” For aspiring photographers Glen offered the following advice, “Some tips for aspiring photographers, don’t concentrate on equipment, concentrate on technique and composition, most important.” “The camera I use is a Nikon D7100 with Tamron and Sigma lenses, it’s a good mid range kit. I use Nikon software and Photoshop for editing. as sparingly as possible, unless it’s an ‘arty piece’ which I occasionally fiddle with,” he said.

Behind the Citizen of Year AT the next Myall Coast Historical Society meeting, Myall River Action Group spokeperson and Senior Citizen of the Year in 2015, Gordon Grainger will be guest speaking. The meeting is on Tuesday 3 May from 7pm at the Old Library in Hawks Nest. Mr Grainger’s connection to

this area goes back more than sixty years, when as a teenager on holidays he enjoyed fishing in the crystal clear water at the entrance to the Myall River. When fishing was magical, as were the blue swimmer crabs, and all along the waterfront were species of oceanic and occasionally tropical fish. Gordon and wife Trish

Grainger have been permanent residents since 1998. Gordon told Myall Coast News Of The Area, “The history of the Myall river was recently explained by Gary Worth who made a detailed and great presentation.” “My talk will be mainly modern history starting from my first visit to Tea Gardens 62

years ago and ending with the recently completed dredging program,” he said. Ruth Calcutt from the Historical Society said, “Come and join us for an interesting night.” “For enquiries ring Dawn Engel (Secretary) on 4997 0820,” Ms Calcutt said.

Generally speaking, unless your property is your principal place of residence you may be liable to pay Land Tax. If the owner of a property is a company, the company will generally not be entitled to the principal place of residence exemption.

threshold. This threshold is revised each calendar year. For the year 2016 the threshold is currently $482,000. You only pay Land Tax on the value of an investment property where that value of the unimproved land exceeds the threshold and calculated by multiplying this value by 1.6% plus $100. For example: If you own an investment property where the unimproved land value is $600,000 the Land Tax payable is calculated as follows:

($600,000 - $482,000) x 1.6% + $100 = $1988.00

Sophie keeps fighting Oyster injection MINISTER for Primary Industries Niall Blair has announced a $360,000 investment to grow the state’s oyster industry over the next three years as part of a $4 million commitment with NSW Farmers Association. Mr Blair was joined by Member for Myall Lakes Stephen Bromhead at the MW & EA Sciacca & Sons oyster farm in Wallis Lake where funding will support improved access to genetically selected lines of Sydney Rock Oysters. “The Select Oyster Company, in partnership with NSW Farmers, will help develop the capacity of commercial hatcheries and help new producers through on-site training and collaboration with registered

q

training organisations,” Mr Blair said. “This program will ensure that the NSW oyster industry has better access to a reliable supply of Sydney Rock Oysters – that will allow producers to keep up with the demand for the state’s oysters. “The impacts of disease outbreaks can be devastating for our oyster producers, that’s why the NSW Government is determined to ensure we are investing in appropriate programs to give producers every opportunity to minimise these impacts as much as possible.” NSW Farmers CEO Matt Brand said the Sydney Rock Oyster program will also offer extension services to producers in addition to the

production of genetically selected, resilient oysters. “The program will include launching mobile hatchery technology for the Sydney Rock Oyster industry in NSW, which will provide access to improved lines for growers in disease-stricken estuaries,” Mr Brand said. “We want to ensure that we are supporting producers in an efficient, effective way.” Mr Bromhead said the announcement would be welcomed news for producers. “The availability of stronger stock and alternate production capacity will be of great benefit to all of our producers and will strengthen the future capacity of the industry,” Mr Bromhead said.

BRAVE: Sophie Grill with a rare cancer that kills one child every four days.

Lack of funding and awareness for cancers CEO Richard Vines, said the impact of these neglected cancers on all Australians is simply devastating. “Every day young Australians are randomly selected to fight a life threatening battle against a relentless foe,” Mr Vines said. “While the impact of rare and less common cancers on our young is tragic, it gets worse as the population ages.” Rare cancers strike down

one young Gen Y Australian (aged 20-39) and take the lives of nearly 10 Gen X Australians (aged 40-59) every day. With the lack of funding into these cancers, families like Sophie’s struggle to afford treatments. With only four new medicines approved for solid rare cancers compared with more than 55 for common cancers, RCA are calling on the government to increase funding into treatment and research.

For Rebecca and Robert, their hope for the future is to give Sophie the best care they possibly can. A fundraising campaign has been created, with all donations going towards the cost of Sophie’s treatment. Unique and focus on the strength

News Of The Area

Daniel SAHYOUN writes from his own experience APRIL is National Autism Awareness Month aimed at raising an understanding of this life-long condition affecting one out of every 100 people worldwide. Bursting into the realm of public awareness with the 1988 film Rainman, autism is far more than just the development disorder portrayed in this film. While no two autistic people are the same, the film highlights the struggles people living with autism face every day of their lives. With difficulties fitting into a world they don’t understand, problems with communication, dependency on routines and repetitive and obsessive behaviours, people with autism face many challenges. I personally understand these struggles as I was diagnosed with autism when I was three-years-old. My mother said she will never forget the day a doctor

told her, “Daniel is the most extreme case I have seen in my 20-year career,” and “he will never amount to anything in life.” While I will never be cured, my stubborn mother refused to accept that I would achieve nothing. She taught me it’s alright to be different and rather than seeing autism as a disability, see it as something that makes me unique and focus on my strengths. I may have problems communicating verbally for example, but I can express myself clearly through writing. I have met many inspirational people including one of Australia’s biggest supporters of autism, Manly Sea Eagles player Brenton Lawrence. Brenton won this year’s National ASPECT Recognition Award for raising an awareness of

Baldwin decides to hang up boots

Will not contest at the upcoming election

PATERSON MP Bob Baldwin announced his retirement from Federal politics last Saturday, confirming he will not contest the seat at the next election. After 17 years in office, the Liberal Party MP said withdrawing his nomination was not an easy decision. “I have not come to the decision lightly and I feel it is time to move on with my life and allow others the opportunity to fulfil their dreams of entering parliament with fresh enthusiasm,” he said. “It has been an honour and a privilege to represent the community over so many terms and feel I have left a legacy of many successful projects working in conjunction with the community and all levels of government.” Mr Baldwin, 61, has had a long association with the Myall

Coast, first winning the seat of Paterson in the 1996 Federal Election with 59.78% of the two-party preferred vote. Although losing the seat to Labor’s Bob Horne in 1998, he was re-elected in 2001 and comfortably held the seat at every subsequent election. Mr Baldwin served as a Parliamentary Secretary in the final two years of the Howard government. He also served in the Abbott Ministry as a Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Industry and as a Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Environment. Mr Baldwin said he was “proud to have represented the Liberal Party in Paterson for 17 out of the past 20 years.” “I also feel privileged to have served on the Federal executive in both Government and Opposition and I thank the

party for that opportunity.” In a statement released last week, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull described Mr Baldwin as one of Parliament’s “true characters” who had “passionately represented the people of Paterson.” Prime Minister Turnbull also acknowledged Mr Baldwin’s achievements including writing reforms to the anti-dumping legislation and capping Commonwealth water purchases in the Murray Darling Basin. Mr Baldwin’s passion for cooking was also noted with The Prime Minister commenting, “He’s never happier than wearing an apron and serving food to friends.” It has been reported that Mr Baldwin is the 13th member of coalition parties in the House of Representatives to announce their retirement.

was diagnosed with Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD). “I just wanted to help wherever I could and raise an awareness of the talents of people with ASD,” he said. “Everyone is different whether they’re on the

spectrum or not, it’s just about recognising potential and seeing a different brilliance.” By focusing on my strengths, I’m now in my second year at Newcastle University studying

Journalism, well on my way to achieving something worthwhile in life. During Autism Awareness month, see the different brilliance and realise everyone has the potential to achieve.

Great Lakes Council has made its submission on the three-way merger proposal of Gloucester Shire, Great Lakes and Greater Taree City Councils to the NSW Government’s delegate, Dr Ian Tiley. The NSW Government appointed Dr Tiley to investigate the Minister’s proposed three-way merger and hold a public consultation which finished at 5pm on Friday 15 April 2016. “Our submission has

been placed on Council’s website so that residents can access it and be aware of the information we have used to form our position on the merger,” said Council’s General Manager, Mr Glenn Handford. As part of its submission, Council engaged consultants Morrison Low to undertake an analysis to identify the costs and benefits associated with the merger proposal. Morrison Low’s Report is included in Council’s submission. You can access the Report at www.greatlakes.nsw.gov.au It’s also on the News Of The Area website.

WHEN driving up Meade Street in Bulahdelah one may notice the shiny, newly refurbished Cenotaph. After the ANZAC Centenary last year, the NSW Government established a Community War Memorial Fund to help protect and conserve existing war memorials across NSW. The Bulahdelah Cenotaph was constructed in 1946 and it represents

the people of this area that served their country. It was in need of refurbishment as it was reported that the sandstone was not good quality anymore. Every twelve months the Cenotaph was needing to be cleaned and sealed and the outer surface was beginning to flake so this refurbishment is greatly appreciated by the Bulahdelah RSL Sub Branch. The scaffolding went up and work progressed

over the month of February 2016 and now is complete and ready for the ANZAC ceremony that will be held on Monday 25 April. Eric Saville, President of the Bulahdelah RSL Sub Branch said, “We appreciate the effort put into the new Cenotaph.” “Now it’s my job to plant and maintain the garden around it again. “But it is up and running ready for the ANZAC Day service,” said q READY: Cenotaph at Bulahdelah. Mr Saville.

Nicky enlisted in the Army in 1939 during WW II, age 20, serving in the 3rd Reserve Motor Transport Company. He was taken prisoner by the Japanese during the fall of Singapore and held prisoner in Changi Prison and slaved on the infamous Burma Railway. In 1944, Nicky was being transported by the Japanese on the ship Kakuyo Maru

when it was torpedoed by a US submarine. Nicky and other POW’s including his best mate, Jack Pearson escaped onto a life raft. Nicky was so ill and wanted to be left behind due to his terrible condition but his mates did not leave him. During the night Nicky slipped into the water unknown to his mates and died at sea. After the war, Jack Pearson sought out Nicky’s mum, Jane, to give her some consolation in knowing what happened to her son.

Jack had never been to Tea Gardens but as Nicky’s best mate we are sure that he would have known of the special and beautiful place that is Tea Gardens Hawks Nest. Jack settled in Tea Gardens, married and named his son Nicky . As ANZAC Day approaches the Engel family remembers Nicky and how he must have longed to be home and hear the murmur of the Myall. Thank you!

WOW ! What an incredible experience. Thank you to the many local residents who attended the activities of the inaugural Grey and Thespian Mardi Gras over the weekend of 8-10 April 2016. Your support ensured the event was an incredible success, far exceeding our expectations. A big thank you for the huge amount of work put in by the small band of tireless volunteers, who gave a new meaning to the term 'team work'. Thank you to the members of the Hawks Nest/Tea Gardens Progress Association who, although thinking we had gone quite insane, believed in us and supported us to pursue a hair brained idea to organise a Seniors Week event called the Grey and Thespian Mardi Gras. And thank you to event sponsors Kim Burton of Maitland and Port Stephens Toyota, the Myall Coast News Of The Area and Cathriona Kelly for the artwork. To explain, it all started with an idea to enjoy a cuppa and cake to mark Seniors Week. We still had a cuppa and cake, but what an extravaganza of entertainment that went with it. Yes, it is a play on a name, but bears no resemblance to that other famous Sydney Mardi Gras. The Grey and Thespian Mardi Gras is a celebration designed to showcase what our area has to offer for seniors, to encourage seniors participation and to highlight the wealth of talents seniors contribute to our community. Given the number of participants and attendees, it achieved its goals in spades. The weekend 'teed off' on Friday with 79 participants competing in the inaugural Grey Nomad's Cup golf tournament, kindly sponsored by Palm Lake Resort. The tournament was professionally run and a great days golfing was enjoyed by all on the beautiful Hawks Nest golf course. Participants were treated to a catered meal and with 44 prizes to be won, there weren't many golfers who went home empty handed. For the record, the inaugural Grey Nomad's Cup was won by a local team which included the organiser, Dave Gilbert. Congratulations Dave! Friday night saw a return to the flicks. Scores of people turned out to watch the screening of The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel at the Community Hall in Hawks Nest which was beautifully decorated to reflect the Indian theme of the movie. Movie goers, dressed in their best Indian garb, enjoyed ice creams, Indian food by local restaurant Curries and More and free wine tasting compliments of Tamburlaine Wines. With an entry fee of only $5, bargain nights out don't come much better than that. Thanks to Chris Klimek, the Myall U3A and the devoted helpers for a fantastic experience. We woke Saturday morning to cloudy skies which had many worried that the Hawks Nest Village Square entertainment might be washed out. But the weather Gods smiled on us and by mid morning the sky had cleared and the performers gave their best in streaming sunshine. After the Scottish pipe band commenced proceedings with a lap of the shopping centre pied piper style, MC Allan Wilson introduced local bands and bush poets who took us through their repertoire, followed by line dancers, the local ukulele

group, the local choir conducted by Barbara Lyle, and as the afternoon rolled on, the entertainment was wound up by Leon Bobako and friends in a country/rock jam session. The Village Square was packed for most of the day by foot tapping and singing patrons who appeared to be lapping up the free entertainment with glee. The entertainers, expertly arranged by the Myall Coast Entertainers, all gave their time freely on the day. The Village Square entertainment was complimented by market stalls presented by the Myall Coast Chamber of Commerce and Tourism in the adjacent car park. Local community groups promoted their activities and signed up many new members on the day. And, there were smiles all round as Seniors lined up to receive their free tea, coffee, cakes and biscuits, sponsored by Myall Beans and Leaves and Coles at Tea Gardens.

After such a busy day it was pleasing to see so many people continue their enjoyment of the Mardi Gras by attending the Radio Plays at the Community Hall and the masked black-and-white dinner dance at the Golf Club on Saturday night. Apologies to anyone who missed out on seeing the radio plays as the performance was booked out by a full house of 126 patrons. Don't worry though; I expect there'll be many more opportunities to sample the delights of the Myall Coast Entertainers later in the year. Sandra McAvoy and Judy Gilbert did an amazing job of decorating the Golf Club for the dinner dance. Over 100 people donned their best black and white outfits and colourful masks and danced the night away to local band Driftwood. The quality meals prepared by the club's chef were worth the admission price alone. As someone was heard to say, "this is the best night I've had in Hawks Nest for 15 years", and so it was. With the overlap of Youth Week, the kids and grandkids were not forgotten over the Mardi Gras weekend either. About 50 children and accompanying adults took in the delights of the movie Paper Planes in a matinee session on Sunday. Ice creams and lollies kept the kids happy during the film and there was much laughter during the accompanying cartoons and the paper plane competition afterwards. Thanks again to the Myall U3A members, as well as Sue Bailey and Julie Sims for all their hard work. To wind up the weekend's activities, The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel was shown at the Community Hall on Sunday night. Once again, Indian dress, hall decorations and food complimented the movie perfectly and the many attendees were seen leaving with bleary eyes but smiles from ear to ear. So, as an indication of what our community can achieve and with the success of this year's Mardi Gras shining in our eyes, at the risk of more heartburn and sleepless nights...BRING ON NEXT YEAR'S EVENT!!

Trevor Jennings (President, Hawks Nest/Tea Gardens Progress Association) and Mark McCormick (Vice President, Hawks Nest/Tea Gardens Progress Association) on behalf of all the wonderful Mardi Gras volunteers and supporters.

q OFFICE: Pacific Palms Real Estate, Blueys Beach office.

Tea Gardens & Pacific Palms Real Estate combine forces By Daniel SAHYOUN TEA Gardens Real Estate and Pacific Palms Real Estate have merged forces to establish the Pacific Coast Real Estate network. The new network, supported by 12 fully licenced Real Estate Agents across two offices, has a focus on improving sales, leasing and holiday rentals for buyers, sellers and investors. With added strength of additional partnerships with Liberty Property Services and Christie’s International, the network reflects a growing need to balance local knowledge and experience with National and International market trends. Director of Tea Gardens Real Estate Mr Rick Wraight said the network will provide a strong resource structure with distinct benefits for the Myall Coast area. “Our long standing local goodwill and customer focus will be enhanced by a resourced support network boosting sales, management and holiday leasing,” Mr Wraight said. “Our clients can expect to receive significantly increased market exposure, connected with the latest marketing and integration into the global market.” Director of Pacific Palms Real Estate Ms Dominique

Vasers said the new partnerships will allow them to tap into a broader base of buyers and sellers. “Christie’s has access to a global real estate resource and Liberty connects Sydney to the Coast,” Ms Vasers said. “These are large businesses that can take care of some of the smaller things so we can give more attention to serving our clients.” Mr Wraight said the network would support tourism with a combined portfolio of over 400 holiday properties, representing two per cent of the total number of holiday rental properties in NSW. With 15 years of association between Tea Gardens and Pacific Palms agencies, Mr Wraight said the establishment of the network was a natural progression. “The two agencies are very similar in structure, use the same software, same folios of property rentals and have similar markets and property styles,” he said. “This will allow for the exchange of expertise and showing of market content which will be an advantage to our client base.” Mr Wraight and Ms Vasers, who have over 55 years of experience in Real Estate between them, are planning for further expansions with the addition

q DIRECTOR: Rick Wraight, Tea Gardens Real Estate.

q DIRECTOR: Dominique, Vasers, Pacific Palms Real Estate. of other agencies in the Great Lakes area. “It’s an exciting time to be involved with real estate,” Ms Vasers said. “I am looking forward to the coming 12 months and the changes they bring.”

News Of The Area

Last merge plea Dear News Of The Area,

FRIDAY 15th April has passed, however - It is not too late for you to help save your Council. Council has now submitted its merger submission to the Delegate, Dr Ian Tiley. Dr Tiley will now prepare his recommendation/s to the Government, for their consideration. The Government has no obligation to act on Dr Tiley’s recommendations and can make any decisions in regard to the proposal for Great Lakes Council, Taree Council and Gloucester to be merged into one single Council. Therefore it is extremely important that the Government is fully aware that the majority of Great Lakes residents, do not want Great Lakes Council to be merged with any other Council. Great Lakes Council has already been found to be “Fit for the Future”, whereas Taree and Gloucester have been found to be NOT Fit for the Future. As the Government will of course be looking for guidance from Dr Tiley’s recommendations, they also need to be completely aware that a large majority of Great Lakes residents do not want their Fit for the Future Council to be merged with any other Council. To be confident that the Government is fully aware of our feelings on this matter, it is now important that each and every one of us lets them know directly. Please write or e-mail each of the following key MPs, with your objections to our Council being merged with any other Council. You can simply state that you are a Great Lakes resident and that you are firmly against

any merger involving Great Lakes Council. However it would be prudent to include details and facts to support your objections, this could be the same as any previous submission that you have lodged with Dr Tiley. As time is running out, please write to or e-mail, each of the following key MPs using contact details:

q VOLUNTEER: Amanda Albury has volunteered to coordinate Clean Up Australia Days in Limeburners Creek for over ten years.

q SCATTERED: Rubbish currently sitting in Karuah National Park which Amanda and her volunteers will be targeting in this year’s clean up.

MEET Amanda Albury who, with other volunteers, has been instrumental in keeping Twelve Mile Creek and Limeburners Creek clean for the last 10 years as part of the Clean Up Australia annual campaign. Where’s Limeburners Creek and Twelve Mile Creek? It’s a tiny but beautiful part of Australia located in the south-western corner of Great Lakes Council’s area (think south of Booral and west of Karuah). This year’s Australia-wide clean-up was scheduled for March, but due to an accident Amanda had on her property, she was unable to undertake this year’s clean up. Amanda doesn’t give up easily though and the good news is that she’s back on track and ready to go for the 11th annual Australia Day Clean-up in Limeburners Creek. After an approach to the Clean-up Australia Day organisers, Amanda was given the all-clear to hold a special clean up event for this weekend - she will organise volunteers from 8am until 2pm on both Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 April. Registration for the Clean Ups will be at 8am at the corner of Limeburners Creek Road and The Bucketts Way (meet at the bus shelter).

Surprise Reunion c

“People who can only spare a couple of hours are still welcome to come along and help for whatever time they can. And we have some areas that are away from roads for a safer experience for children who wish to participate with their parents,” said Amanda. “Last year we had a child from Booral School with her mum and Grandmother, which was great to see.” Council will schedule a special pick up at three locations of the rubbish Amanda and her helpers collect on the weekend. The area to be covered is from the corner of the Pacific Highway along the Bucketts Way, including Limeburners Creek Road to north of Forest Glenn Road. “The more people that volunteer and come along to help, the further we can cover,” said Amanda. For more information about the Clean Up, please call Council on 6591 7222 or Amanda on 4997 5979. Well done Amanda and the small number of volunteers who pick up other people’s rubbish thrown out of vehicle windows over 11 years, in rain and heat. We salute your community spirit!

BOWLS: Mighty Dolphins Grade 6 Pennant side after their great win on Saturday against Mayfield West.

Tea Gardens Men’s weekly roll BOWLS

Tea Gardens Men’s Bowls By The JAFFA

THE usual Wednesday Nominated Triples competition was washed out on 13 April with early morning rain setting in. It was hoped that the Wednesday Mid-Week Pennants would proceed with a break in the weather allowing the Grade 4 match at home against Wallsend to start on time. Two ends were played before a heavy shower put an end to proceedings. This match will be rescheduled to a later date. 15 April: In lieu of the Friday Jackpot Pairs a charity event was held today in conjunction with the local branch of the RSL. Proceeds going to their “Homes for Heroes” appeal. 16 April: Round 6 of the Newcastle District Pennant competition was played today with the Mighty Pelican Pest Control Dolphins Grade 3 side playing away at Lowlands. Grade 4 and Grade 6 sides played at home taking on Carrington and Mayfield West respectively. Grade 7 had a bye. Grade 3 had a tough match at Lowlands with one team winning narrowly and one losing by a small margin. Unfortunately, the remaining

WEDNESDAY 13 April was the first time the lights had been used at Bulahdelah for many years, and a good roll up of 18 players took part on the night with everyone giving it the thumbs up. So we will keep playing under lights on Wednesday evenings for a while longer. The results for the games are Richard Laughton, Mossy, and Robert Taylor 22 defeated Shane Soaper, Wendy Grainger and Al Freihaut 4. Billy Watts, Shane Reed and Kyle Reed 17 defeated Grant Bidgood, Ningbat Hutley and Butch Hutley 6.

team suffered a heavy loss. Lowland won the game 75-50. The performance of the weekend has to be with the Mighty Dolphins Grade 4 side. They were soundly beaten at Carrington early in the completion and well into the match it looked like history was going to repeat itself with the home side trailing for all of the game. I remember looking across at the Master Board at about the 54th end and thinking that the home-side could not possibly win from there. Obviously no one told the Dolphins that! With two rinks concluded Tea Gardens had recorded two wins. Keith Smith’s team had a great win 32-16 and Dave Rimmer’s team pulled off a memorable 21-19 win. In another example of sides winning matches, Ron James’ team had trailed for all of the game and with one end to play were down 11-32. They needed a 4 to win the match. It was all down to Ron’s last bowl. They pulled off a 5! The final score Tea Gardens 69- Carrington 67. The Mighty Dolphins Grade 6 side had also been beaten by Mayfield West in the first round on a brand new, but very slow, synthetic green. Wiser heads than mine determined to play the match on our grass green. It was the right decision. From the very first bowl Tea Gardens were off and running with all rinks out in front.

And in the third game Guy Rowe, Pete White and the veteran Keith Charnock defeated Margaret King, Bo Taylor and Rod King 15 to 13. Thursday 14 April saw a first round major singles game between the current singles champion Shane Barry and Guy Rowe. The game was a close affair with only single shots being scored by both players on most ends. Shane got on top towards the end of the game and ran out the winner by 31 shots to 21. Saturday 16 April: Due to the pennant game being postponed to Sunday, the jackpot bowls went ahead on Saturday. A good roll up of 26 players turned out on the day so we had 3 games of triples

This was a very proficient and methodical demolition by the home side as evidenced by the scores. Dave Austin’s team winning 24-14. Ron Webster’s team were relentless finishing 28-7 and Doug Naylor’s team completed the rout winning 26-15. Tea Gardens winning 78-36. In Pennant games next week, the mid-week competition, Tea Gardens play New Lambton at New Lambton. In Saturday Pennants, Grade 3 play Raymond Terrace at home, with Grades 4 and 6 playing Raymond Terrace at Raymond Terrace. Grade 7 play Stockton at home. 17 April: The Sunday bowlers enjoyed a visit from the Duke of Wellington Hotel travelling bowlers today. Tea Gardens fielded 21 bowlers and the travelling bowlers bought 14 plus 3 supporters. A great day was had by all. Sneaked in before the change in the weather! Prizes were given out to winning lead, second and skip and also the lucky losers lead, second and skip. Thanks are extended to Noel Jackson and Barry Goode who did the cooking and to Bob Weir who was the coach. It was good to see John Bilby bowling again. The Duke of Wellington bowlers will definitely visit again and there is a move afoot to have a trophy to play for next year. Watch out for the semi-final of the Club Major pairs next Sunday.

and 2 games of pairs. Results are Val Lynch and Chris Whalan def Wendy Grainger and Mick Worth 31-5. Faye Mason, Graeme Chapman defeated Beryl Chapman, Ken Southern 1613. Barbara Jones, Ron Hourn, Kel Woodward def Guy Rowe, Butch Hutley, Bo Taylor 25-9. Richard Laughton, Jan Bartyn, Robert Taylor def Tony Welsh, Keith Charnock, Stewart Deery 20-10. George Jones, Glen Grainger, Ian Russell def Freda Laughton, John Miller, John Bartyn 16-10. The jackpot of $300 was won by Barbara Jones, Ron Hourn and Kel [the burglar] Woodward with a + 16. The mens pennant side went down on all three rinks against Gloucester.

HAWKS Nest Bridge Club was pleased to be included in the activities at the Grey and Thespian Mardi Gras held in the Hawks Nest Shopping Precinct on Saturday 9 April. Several members of the club spent the day handing out brochures and explaining the benefits of Bridge as well as showing the plans/drawings for the new clubhouse, which will be beneficial to the community. It was great to see community support for our venture. A raffle that was run over the fortnight was won by Bruce Lumsden of Sydney. When we notified Bruce

of his win, he informed us that he and his wife are planning to retire to Hawks Nest and as they are Bridge players, look forward to joining our club. THE Hawks rebounded to defeat the Cardiff Cobras by 20 points to 6 at Myall Park on Sunday. John Schultz was a dominate sight in the Hawks hard fought win. Schultz won five of the six game day awards, unprecedented in recent memory. In ideal conditions the game produced an entertaining spectacle of League. Big defence, skillful halves combinations, and end to end play were featured. Brooke Roach praised his team’s effort in holding Cardiff to 6 points. Their only breach was an intercept try in the twentieth minute. Trent Murphy led the tackle count for successive weeks, supported by backrowers, Nathan Ruse and Mitchell Turvey. Up front, Regan Hunter and Ben Mossop produced strong performace’s. Halves Billy Greentree and Steve Slee were calculating, and Anthony Cameron’s return to the centres was outstanding. Luke Handsaker and Jason Purdon were timely

replacements for Jack Beverley and Nick Clarke, who were both injured in the previous week’s game. For the Hawks, John Schultz, Billy Greentree, and Jake Geraghty scored tries. Billy Greentree kicked for from four to keep his 100% conversion rate this season. The Hawks will travel away next week. A venue and time will depend on a regrade, which will take place this week. LADY HAWKS

THE Lady Hawks were defeated by a late try to Morisset in the opening game. Leading for most of the match, they were unable to hold on in the final set. Sami Davidson pled a leaders role. Taylah Cooke, Leilani White, and Teegan Barr scored tries. Sami Davidson kicked 1 goal. The “Players Player” award was won by Linda Braddick, and Christine Carter won the Coach’s award. The Lady Hawks will have the buy next week. MYALL RIVER JUNIORS

THE Myall River Juniors had this week off, during school holidays. The 13’s will play Cardiff at Myall Park on Saturday. They will kick off at 10am, followed by the 15’s who will play Muswellbrook at 11am.

A big hit for area GOLF LOCAL golfers were joined by 20 visiting golfers on Friday 8 April, to do battle for the inaugural “Grey Nomads’ Cup” which was held at the Hawks Nest Golf Club.

The event which was proudly sponsored by Palm Lake Resort, was a four person Ambrose and was one of a number of activities held as part of the Grey & Thespian Mardi Gras coinciding with Seniors Week celebrations. Winners of the ‘Grey

Nomads’ Cup’ for 2016 were Gerard and Pauline Power (Castle Hill) who teamed with locals Robert Marsh and David Gilbert. In presenting the trophies Ms Jen Nichols, Sales Manager of Palm Lake Resorts said, “Palm Lake Resort was pleased

q CUP: David Gilbert, Robert Marsh, Andrew McCormack (Golf Pro), Pauline Power, Gerard Power, Jen Nichols (Palm Lake Resort). to have sponsored this year’s event and they look forward to providing even greater support to the event in 2017.” Runners-up on the day were Ross Hewitt, Hans Schmeding, John Burke and Paul Burke, with third place going to Warren Gorton, Sam Johnston, Michael Thornhill and John Campbell. Event organiser David

Gilbert said, “The day had been particularly successful and the response from participants had been very positive – it was a great day.” He thanked Palm Lake Resort for their generous support of the event, as well as local Hawks Nest Golf Professional, Andrew McCormack for his assistance

on the day and for the extensive range of prizes provided for the day. Visiting players all marvelled at the presentation of the course and said they will all certainly return next year to contend for the coveted ‘Grey Nomads’ Cup’. CONTINUED Page 12
