BACK IN BERTH: Jim Timony is pleased to have his boat back in the water.

One man’s passion for his vessel

By Wade CAMERON

VICE-Commodore of the Karuah Motor Yacht Club, Jim Timony, launched his 38-foot vessel called Happy Wanderer,

last week after a long stint on dry land. Mr Timony replaced most of its hull due to a severe grub infestation. Despite name change suggestions prior to launch, such as the S.S. Minnow

and The Submersible, it floated with no problem at all, as expected by Mr Timony.

JOBS: The current quarry employs twenty-one people, however the new Karuah East Quarry will create thirty jobs.

FROM Page 1 With the initial consent being for twenty years a quarry of this size will be a major asset for Newcastle and surrounding regions. Mr Badior said, “We have recently received the management plans approval from the state government and we are preparing a strategy for

the start of the project.” There is no doubt that the value of our natural resources is a vital asset for Australia’s future. Mr Badior said they are forming a Community Consultation Committee and are awaiting nominations from the local community. “Other environmental requirements also need to be put

The Karuah Quarry currently employees 21 people and with the new project plans, the Karuah East Quarry in full production

FROM Page 1 It has been a labour of love for Jim and the many helpers over the past three years and with an abundance of supportive suggestions along the way including, but not limited to, altering the super structure and inverting the boat for relaunch, to cladding the hull with colorbond sheeting, Jim stuck to his guns and continued with the restoration works. However, despite the many hours still required to remediate the internals to bring it up to standard, the hull is intact and the engines are firing, and thus a happy Mr Timony. Mr Timony told Myall Coast q CHEERS: Jim Timony took some time to enjoy that his vessel is finally back in the water. Photo: Wade Cameron News, “To the ‘few’ doubters within

the community questioning the ability of the boat to float and run again that perhaps a number of cold beverages may be coming my way in due course.” “However, on a more serious note I would like to pass on thanks to the many who have contributed over time and especially a heartfelt thanks to the oyster farmers for their patience and consideration.” Mr Timony said that without the assistance of the local oyster farmers reparations would have been a far more difficult undertaking for him. Hence, the life of the 35yo Happy Wanderer continues, much to the pleasure and happiness of her captain, and may there be ‘No Seas too Rough’ for the ‘ole girl.

INSTEAD of going to Hungary, I ended up going to Poland (Polska) for my year-long student exchange. Poland itself is a highlight because of its history and being able to live in Warsaw (Poland’s capital) made it even more interesting. Since I arrived in January it was their winter but surprisingly there wasn’t much snow (and only about -5ish degrees). Even though I had finished school in Australia I still had school in Poland and it was fantastic. I went to 2 different schools, a traditional one and a bilingual one. Polish students are sorted into “profiles” (like math/physics, humanities, bio/chem etc.). I was put into humanities, so I had PE, general science, English (our ESL), 2nd language, Polish, Maths and History. All in all school is much the same as here just in a different language. Some of my favourite things of my exchange were the meetings organised by Rotary at Bydgoszcz/ Toruń, Oświęcim (Auschwitz), Mielno and Wrocław plus Euro Tour. Favourite Rotary trip was Oświęcim for historical reasons. In Warsaw itself there is a

THE nominations are in for a number of categories for the Citizens of the Year Awards which will be announced in Forster at the Council Chambers on Australia Day. This year, some locals from Bulahdelah, Booral and Pindimar are representing the Myall Lakes area with outstanding contributions to the community. Irene Worth from Bulahdelah is nominated for the Citizen of the Year Award. She has been nominated due to her extensive work on the Bulahdelah Hospital Auxiliary and her contribution to the Historical Society. Irene recently won the Myall Lakes Senior Person of the Year Award. When contacted by Myall Coast News, she stated, “I thought this nomination was a follow-up for my other award.” Irene Worth humbly spoke about all the work she has performed as President of the Hospital Auxiliary since 2006 and the amount of time she spends at the Bulahdelah Courthouse. q

spoke with Sue she commented, “I am really chuffed to receive this nomination but I feel I don’t appreciate it as it really is the people in the background who do all the work who are just as important.” Also Ruby Keys from Pindimar has been nominated for Young Citizen of the Year Award for her concern with the homeless and her efforts to incorporate this into her research in her school subjects.

PINDIMAR has beautiful scenery and is a lovely place to live with its waterside residences and nature surroundings, but over the last few years there has been a loss to the fragile environment with its deterioration of sea grass. Don Payne, a local of the Pindimar area, has been researching the problem and has taken photos over time to see the loss and now the gain. Recently the sea grass has made a comeback and is slowly growing back which means that the nutrients are returning to the water and the system is healthier. Don Payne commented, “The whole system seems happier.” “You can see the difference between South Pindimar and North Pindimar because the sea grass is growing more vibrantly at South Pindimar and this is giving more nutrients to the water.”

2016

Gordon Grainger contacted Myall Coast News and explained, “From a scientific viewpoint, sea grass is a vital element in the health of our waterways and is a habitat for numerous marine species.” “The foreshore along Pindimar was formerly an extensive area of sea grasses and held a number of oyster leases,” he said. Over the last decade, sand inundation swallowed the grass and oyster leases and what was a muddy waterfront became a white sandy beach. Don Payne passed on information from an oyster farmer about the three currents that run through the bay and it is these channels that flush the water through. “The oyster population and the marine life depend on the weed.” Mr Payne said, “The sea grass is needed for the system of the waterways to function properly.”

Library head takes new year challenge

q

GREAT Lakes Library Service is the first library in NSW to launch an online book club through the innovative Goodreads website and everybody is welcome to join. Goodreads is a huge worldwide community with millions of members who share their reading experience online. They also set a reading challenge each year, where you nominate how many books you hope to read in a year and then keep track. “Setting yourself a reading challenge makes a perfect New Year’s resolution,” says Council’s Library Manager, Chris Jones. With Goodreads you can also create an online group where you can share your thoughts on books to read, get ideas for your next read or leap into a bookrelated discussion - a very easy way to be part of a great big book club. “When Goodreads invited me to set my own reading challenge for 2016 I thought this was the ideal opportunity to encourage our community to join in,” said

The wettest start to 2016 By Rachel REITSMA

THE statistics stated that this was the wettest start to the year in over 100 years and the amount of rain that fell on Bulahdelah from 5 -7 January 2016 led to floods and high river levels. But after the rain came sunshine and hot temperatures but even with this weather the Myall River in Bulahdelah has not receded back to its normal level. The wharf at the Bulahdelah Lions Park is still under water and q PARK: Lions Park flooded. the road leading to the park has been closed which has meant that required is still clearing other roads. tourists have not had the opportunity to It was discussed that the Myall River park and stay overnight. is at its peak and still flooded in some The road is closed due to remedial areas even after days of no rain as there work that needs to be done which was is 100% drainage into the Myall River caused from the flooding. and nowhere else for the water to go. Great Lakes Council spoke to Myall And with more rain on the 15 January Coast News and reassured that the the river will continue to be at its peak road would be fixed but the machinery and the flood plains will be inundated.

Mr Jones. “We’ve set up our own group in Goodreads, called ‘Great Lakes Library Better Reading Book Club’. We believe this is the first Goodreads public library group in NSW and only the third in Australia, which is a pretty cool added bonus,” he said. “We’d love as many people as possible to be part of this. And local book clubs could use it to share discussions, set their own reading lists and get ideas for new books to read. After all, a reading community is a better community. Plus, it should be heaps of fun.” It’s easy to get involved. Simply go to www.goodreads. com and join up. Once in your account chose the dropdown option next to ‘Explore’, select ‘Groups’ and search for ‘Great Lakes Library’. Then all you have to do is select the ‘Join’ button and you’re in. Go ahead, join the group, set yourself a realistic (and maybe a bit challenging) reading goal and make “reading more” your New Year’s resolution.

National Park discount

MYALL Lakes MP Stephen Bromhead has announced discounted prices on National Park Passes for customers renewing their vehicle registration online. “This one-stop-shop design means people cannot only renew their vehicle registration, they can renew their love of nature through an easy purchase of the National Park Pass,” Mr Bromhead said. “There are so many great National Parks throughout our community, including Booti Booti National Park and Myall Lakes National Park. This is a great opportunity for the public to access them and keep accessing them. Environment Minister Mark Speakman said this more straight-forward approach would encourage more people to visit National Parks across the state. “We have such great natural

assets right across NSW. The NSW Government is doing its bit through discounted park entry fees to encourage everyone to visit our National Parks. “Customers who renew their vehicle registrations online through Service NSW will be entitled to $15-off the full price of their annual national park passes,” Mr Speakman said. An annual pass means customers only need to pay a one-off fee for vehicle access to either one or a collection of the 45 fee collecting national parks. The discount applies to two of the most popular passes – All Parks and Multi-Parks Passes. Minister for Finance, Services and Property Dominic Perrottet highlighted that integration of a range of government services has helped facilitate discounted entry into National Parks.

“Service NSW has been a game changer by making it easier to interact with government, saving time and money – allowing more time to do fun things, like exploring our great national parks,” Mr Perrottet said. “Whether you are renewing vehicle registration, applying for a NSW Seniors Card, or enrolling to vote, there are hundreds of transactions available 24-hours seven days per week through the www.service.nsw.gov. au website, Service NSW app, or by phoning 13 77 88.” “Summer is the best time for anyone to visit a National Park,” Mr Bromhead said. “I want to see more people from Myall Lakes take up this fantastic opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors and visit our national parks and reserves.”

Importance of swim Dear News Of The Area,

I’M writing this message based on the recent drownings in Hawks Nest, and the increasing need for swimming lessons at the Tea Gardens Public Swimming Pool. With two very public drownings in our district in this one week alone, and after checking the drowning statistics on the Royal Life Saving National Drowning Report (1 July 2014-30 June 2015), I was alarmed to see that the total number of drownings was 271, 26 (10%) of them falling into the 0-4 years category. I have contacted Council trying to find out information as to what’s needed to have a permanent swimming instructor at the local pool but the man I needed to speak to (Andrew from Parks) hasn’t returned my call yet. I personally checked into swimming lessons at the ONLY “local” pool holding swimming lessons for my 2 kids, at a cost of $36 each per lesson, plus extras. I am a single mum on the pension and in no way can afford that in my budget. Why is it that for a coastal town promoting our beautiful beaches and river systems, do we not have the access to swimming lessons for our kids, or adults in need of it? Why must we fork out for travel expenses on top of huge lesson fees to fight for a position at Raymond Terrace with a much

larger area to cover, than our own local pool in Tea Gardens? Whilst our zone is much smaller, I’m sure that any lesson position will be filled in a second by our locals wanting to teach our kids this essential life skill without drowning our finances on all the extras along with it. As I just mentioned, and especially as we live in Australia (and coastal Australia at that), swimming falls under a LIFE SKILL category more than a recreational one. Why is our own council denying this town (and its tourists) access to a qualified swimming instructor? Why must we travel out of town to help our children learn this Life Skill, rather than to our own community pool? These are questions that I would’ve asked council, but I still haven’t received a call back. Something definitely needs to change here... I hope that someone from your paper might be able to do some more investigating, especially with the recent drownings. Learning to swim will be on a lot of concerned parents just trying to do the right thing for their kids right now, and who might be shying away from it for all the additional travel costs that cannot be scraped from anywhere, like myself.
