Cricket nets to be replaced

By Rachel REITSMA GREAT Lakes Council held a Special Rate Variation Proposal meeting at the Bulahdelah School of Arts on Monday 9 November at 6 pm. The meeting was well attended by the Bulahdelah Chamber of Commerce members and approximately 25 other Bulahdelah residents who came to listen to the proposal and had questions about infrastructure and facilities. Glenn Handford, The General Manager of Great Lakes Council, delivered a presentation that addressed the issue of being a ‘Fit for the Future’ council and introduced a Special Rate Variation that will improve the financial situation to build more roads and

services in the future. “Although we have made significant savings and efficiencies, we simply need more funds than the NSW rate peg can provide if we are to continue along the path of maintaining our existing assets - roads, parks, playgrounds, footpaths and buildings,” Glenn Handford states. Glenn Handford also explained how a business improvement program is happening and this will allow wider community communication and operations teams talking to each other about issues rather than ‘upward and downward’ communication only. q ENTERTAINING: The Klezmer Musicians picked up the Lajkonik melodies and together they entertained onlookers with an improvised dance performance.

Entertainers are still talked about with the crowd in their colourful traditional costumes. Occasionally, they stopped by at the MyallU3A stall to pause for photos and talk to curious onlookers. The following day, at the Hawks Nest Community Hall, the group of 15 dancers with ages ranging from 15 to 35, presented folk dances from various provinces in

THE Sydney-based song and dance ensemble, Lajkonik, conquered the community’s hearts and minds in their recent appearance at the Myall River Festival with a vibrant display of colour, youth, vigour and talent. They gave preview performances on stage at the Festival and, despite the windy weather, brought smiles to Festival-goers’ faces as they mingled

Poland accompanied by a delightful accordion player from Newcastle, Suzi Biniecka. “I was very lucky to see the Lajkonik concert and enjoyed it so much,” said Noela Bentley a long-time resident of Tea Gardens.

Great cause RECENTLY 50 members and friends of the Rotary Club of Myall Coast travelled to Zorba’s Greek Restaurant in Karuah in what has become an annual fundraising effort with the proceeds going towards research into Mental Health this year. The Rotary Health Foundation(RHF) in Australia, targets specific areas of public health each year including the extensive research into SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) that has resulted in conclusive findings that have been responsible for the saving of thousands of baby’s lives. 2015 is the year that the RHF is concentrating on Mental Health in the Community.

The continuing theme of fundraising efforts of Rotary Clubs throughout Australia is one of the “Mad Hatters Party”. Local Rotary has been organising their “Mad Hatters Party” for several years now and the highly successful event in Karuah this year succeeded in raising $500 towards Mental Health Research. President Paul and the Members of the Rotary Club would like to thank the many members of our Community that attended for their generous support. “Everyone voted the night a huge success and were looking forward to next year’s bigger and better fundraiser.”

Performance FROM Page 1 “The speed of the dances was amazing, the cloth spun by hand and made into layers of beautiful gowns for the ladies to spin around in the dances at great speed, while the young men jumped over swords as they accompanied the beautiful girls, was a joy to watch.” Much to everyone’s delight, the dancers invited the audience to join in the dance at the end of the concert. It was followed by a sumptuous afternoon tea with Polish cakes and delicacies. The group’s engagement in Tea Gardens was organised by Myall U3A and its President Chris Klimek. Mr Klimek said, “I’m very pleased that the visit by Lajkonik succeeded in showcasing and entertaining everyone with their colourful and lively traditional dancing, singing and musical arrangements.”

This was in response to some requests for more effective communication between the Council and community groups and members. Glenn Handford agreed that the Council members must have more discretion at local level and be taskorientated. In response to local Bulahdelah concerns the following were addressed: The issue of the Lee Street and Crawford Street roads are going to tender and will be fixed. The Meade Street footpath designs have been completed and will be built this financial year. A drainage strategy needs to be looked at in the Works Program for Bulahdelah. And in regards to the cricket nets being pulled down at the Jack Ireland Sporting Complex, Glenn Handford personally apologised to the Bulahdelah locals who were present at the meeting about the situation. Glenn explained, “We did not communicate effectively with the key people involved. “We received many emails and phone calls about the situation and will make sure that the cricket nets will be replaced,” he said. The Council’s Director of Engineering, Ron Hartley confirmed, “At present Council are getting quotes and the cricket nets will be replaced in a better condition.”

Speaking with Myall Coast News, Darren Evans from the Tea Gardens Resource & Waste Transfer Station said, “It’s amazing what we see come in sometimes. Occasionally you’ll see near brand new lounges come in just because someone

is moving and can’t take it with them.” “We turn over the stocks on the shelves every 3 to 5 months or so, but sometimes we see an influx of some goods and we have to move them quick, that creates absolute bargains for people that are looking for that something special, even if it’s from the Tip Shop,” he said.

Great Lakes Council better off to stand alone Handford. “Our submission to the Independent Local Government Review Panel (ILGRP) back in June was based on this same recommendation - that we were best advantaged by remaining a stand-alone council. “IPART has noted that our proposal to stand alone is consistent with the ILGRP option,” added Mr Handford. Great Lakes Council was one of the councils asked to consider a merger with Gloucester Council, and duly appointed an independent consultant to undertake this assessment. Craftman makes an impression By Dave BRAZIER

CARVING the most amazing timber works with ease seems to be Graham Winns calling in life. The Pindimar based Carpenter never ceases to amaze his friends, family and clients with the level of expertise and dedication that goes into each piece of work he delivers. From Outdoor Settings and Coffee Tables, to Clocks, Dartboard Cabinets and specialized job tasks Graham seems to take it all on with ease and delivers world class craftsmanship products, and at very reasonable prices also. Noticeably and an excellent idea for this time of year, his timber reindeers looked incredible, and I have no doubt in my mind these very unique Christmas decorations will be a major hit for anyone that sources them from Graham. pearl necklace and a pink hat. The 4x4 Club then hit some tracks starting from O’Sullivan’s Gap House, then onto a trail parallel to the Pacific Highway and then into scrub. A major obstacle they came to was a rock hill climb which the lady drivers had a go at, but if they did not feel comfortable to tackle the hill their nominated co-driver took over. The trail contained muddy patches and shallow water holes and many slippery hill climbs. The 4x4 Club finished at the top of Benn Ridge Trail. The morning did involve some towing of vehicles to help them all get to the final destination. Back in Bulahdelah a sausage sizzle lunch was provided by the Outdoors 4x4 Club and more money was donated towards the fundraiser. Businesses in Bulahdelah like Detours Cafe also donated money towards the cause. After lunch more trails around Markwell Back Road were explored and many water hole crossings were completed. After this, the members conquered Oaky Knob trail and a rock quarry. The Adminstrator for the Outdoor 4x4 Club, Sergio D’assuncao quoted, “All in all, I would like to thank everyone who attended and made the day awesome and fun. “I know I had a ball seeing everyone dressed up and supporting a good cause.”

Also, from Tuesday 24 November as part of Karuah RSL Meat Raffles, there will be some Christmas Hams on offer also. I LOOKED in amazement as I walked into the foyer of Karuah RSL on Remembrance Day and viewed the increasing mass of prizes to be won during the RSL’s annual Christmas Hamper. A few weeks ago I met up with Ross Parr, Secretary Manager of Karuah RSL to discuss this massive offering to the community. The hamper was more than impressive a few weeks ago, let me tell you it has grown! Speaking with Myall Coast News, Ross Parr said, “The interest level is growing each year, and in particular this years is undoubtedly going to be one for the record books.” “We have actively sought out the best brands of various products this year to include in our hamper, word has got around and it looks like the RSL will be jam packed once again due to the level of interest we’ve received,” he said. treatment for this over the last ten years, has led to a three fold extension of life to an average of fifteen years. Anyone, especially those diagnosed, being treated or finished treatment, or even just in keeping informed about prostate cancer are very welcome to join us. Phillip Everett

Safety concern still a priority on the issue

Dear News Of The Area, WITH reference to Dave Brazier’s article “Pelican poo is more complex than thought“ (Myall Coast News 5 November 2015), I have lived in the area since 1995, driven over the bridge nearly everyday and I’ve never experienced

pelican poo on me/my car. And if I do sometime in the future, SO WHAT? Pelicans (and their poos) are part of nature, which abounds in the area and the reason why we come to live here (most of us, anyway) I do however, empathise with the concern for safety, which is why

the 50km speed limit is imperative in our streets it gives people driving on the bridge adequate time to react safely in case of a pelican “dropping” and/or take in safely the beautiful view from the bridge. Maggie Buchanan

Refute by Association Dear News Of The Area,

ON behalf of the Progress Association, I wish to refute many of the statements made by Councillor Len Roberts in last week’s edition (Myall Coast News 12 November 2015) under the heading “Councillor puts pelicans into perspective”. Firstly, let me personally acknowledge the good work that Councillor Roberts has done for many, many years as our community representative on Great Lakes Council (in fact, Len is a past President of the Progress Association) but recently I feel he is misleading the community he represents, possibly unknowingly, about the issue of pelicans on the Singing Bridge. I’ve been asked by the Progress Association to clarify their stance on this matter and clear up a few misinterpretations, as follows; • The Association believes that the appearance of pelicans roosting on the light fittings is one of natural beauty and one which has the potential to be an iconic tourist attractor. Our businesses would benefit from that and, consequently so would the residents. • The Progress Association clearly acknowledges that the prospect of pelican poop landing on pedestrians and cars is unacceptable, hence its suggestion of rotating the light arms out over the water. • Council’s Director of Engineering Services fully investigated the Association’s suggestion and was satisfied that the proposal was credible. • An independent lighting consultant was engaged to assess the Association’s proposal and reported to Council staff that, with the arms rotated out over the water, there would be adequate light projected onto the road and footpaths to meet all Australian Standards for lighting safety. • Council’s Director of Engineering Services has clearly stated he had the authority to instruct for the lights to be rotated without further endorsement but, being aware of some opposing views within the community, he presented the matter as a ‘Late Report’ at Council’s recent sitting. • The Councillors arbitrarily decided not to pursue the matter any further and unanimously resolved that the lights be repositioned over the road, with spikes, their justification being that in high winds the poo would still blow onto the path and road. We believe, as regular users of the bridge, as opposed to most of the Councillors who would not be, Council has not given enough consideration to the supporting evidence for the suggestion of rotating the lights. Pelicans are rarely seen on the lights in high winds, favouring more sheltered areas, thus creating only a minimal chance of wind-driven poo reaching a victim from the rotated lights distanced out from the pathway and road. • Councillor Roberts has consistently stated the majority of the community want the spikes reinstated and, even since the viability of having the lights rotated has gathered momentum, he still insists 80% do not support that premise. This is clearly not the case. • From the Progress Association's own findings, speaking with residents and the local school headmaster, we have difficulty

MyallCoastNews.com.au

accepting many of Councillor Roberts’ claims and would like to see more evidence. There were approximately 70 attendees at the recent Council Community Engagement Meeting and when asked for a show of hands in support of the spikes, only a dozen or so hands were raised. • The Progress Association fully appreciate that some of the community, both on foot and whilst driving, may have experienced unsavoury occurrences from the pelicans roosting on the lights in their present position and accept that there have been two or three vehicle incidents during the 40 years since the lights were installed in 1974. • We have to assume there were sufficient complaints from those ‘messaged’ to warrant the spikes being installed in the first place. We must also remember what an outcry there was from the unsuspecting community when the spikes were installed 10 years ago, and our iconic tourist attraction was taken away. • In last week’s Press, Councillor Roberts stated he had consulted with Port Stephens Police Command and was told the bridge has ‘poor sight distance’ and is a ‘Blackspot’ yet Council’s own accident data, derived from Police reports and recorded by the RMS, reveals there have been NO recorded accidents, of any type, on the Singing Bridge over the past 5 years. The bridge would have been designed in the 1970’s by the then DMR, presumably built to meet all road design criteria, and it has a low 50km/h speed limit. • To alleviate any problem of cars stopping to admire the view, Council should install a sign at each end of the bridge indicating that stopping on the bridge is not permitted. • Two possible solutions have been offered to Council. 1. Reinstall the lights in their original position over the road, with spikes, and with the addition of lightweight arms attached on the opposite side of the light poles, over the water. 2. Rotate the existing lights, without spikes, out over the water. Is there really the need to keep pulling negative reasons out of a hat to justify why it can’t and won’t work. It’s a shame Councillor Roberts has now resorted to high risk, litigation and insurance threats. Surely those matters should have been investigated at the same time as the lighting safety standards? If not, Council should contact their Public Liability insurer and enquire as to whether either of the Progress Association’s suggestions would be covered. Perhaps Council didn’t realise that the larger community is really passionate about this and won’t give up without a good fight. There will always be a division of opinions about the pelicans and of course, in the scheme of things, this would hardly rate highly on most of the community’s or Council’s busy agendas. However, as the new lights were installed spikeless last year and the April storms have misaligned many of them, this has provided an opportunity for a second chance to get it right – a ‘WIN-WIN’ situation for all! RV Friendly towns

Myall Way Linemarking

THERE has been some concern raised about the wobbly lines on Myall Way near Boston Street. The new roadworks meant the old lines created a real or apparent traffic hazard. Council gave consent to the Engineer to rectify the situation ASAP.

TGHN Bridge Club.

COUNCIL unanimously agreed to lease one of the unused carparks at The HN Shops to the Bridge Clubs. The club has to build the clubhouse eat their expense. This is not only ag win for the hundreds of people involved in the club but will also help rejuvenate the Hawks Nest CBD by bringing people into the area.

COUNCIL has embarked on a program of installing dump points throughout the shire in various towns and villages. This is in recognition of the tourist benefit the “Grey Nomads” in their RV’s and caravans bring. Council is working towards having the shire listed as an RV friendly shire. The RV Friendly program is a Campervan and Motorhome Club of Australia Limited (CMCA) initiative aimed at assisting recreational vehicle (RV) consumers as they journey throughout this wonderful country. This includes motorhomers, campervaners and caravanners. Last week council signed off with the CMCA and Bulahdelah is now officially recognised as our First RV friendly town. There is a dump point at Bulahdelah showground for the

travellers to empty the toilets. The next dump point will be installed at the Lion’s lookout at Tea Gardens. As it will not be connected to the sewer (which is preferred) it will cost $10,000 council may look at sponsorship rights to help defray the costs. If this was to happen; the program would roll out to other towns sooner.

Myall River Festival

CONGRATULATIONS to the Chamber, community groups and the organisers for a great MRF. The Dress up by the Historical society, the Marching Band, the school duck race amongst many great events added a colourful display to a water themed event. The “sail” past was magnificent as was the fireworks. The information and insight on the dredging and health of the river

MyallCoastNewsof the area

on the ferry trips was on all accounts very beneficial. To see what 80,000 cubic metres of dredged sand looks like was simply amazing. Too see dolphins and pirates following the ferry were indeed special. The water flow at the entrance exceeds all expectations. The dredging has finished and the next stage is to provide the sand hopper to place the sand where it is needed. Dredging of the navigation channel will begin early next year and if needed will tidy up the original channel. I understand the chamber is already planning for next year and will involve greater use of the river. Well done to the chamber.

AN application to consider deleting a workshop area from an approved development (several years ago) at the Grange for an additional house to the 16 already approved was deferred

until the 8th December. The deferral was for councillors to see the area and time for the Applicant (RSL Lifecare)to meet with the existing residents to discuss their issues with the proposal. The applicant was to attend the council meeting but was unable to make it at the last minute. Council is hopeful that the applicant will meet with the residents to listen to their concerns. The applicant an dthe residents have not been able to meet.

Police

I ROUTINELY meet with our local police to discuss various issues. Last wek I rang the local station only to be put through to Raymond Terrace as no one was on duty. It appears we no longer have the station manned by 2 police officers. I will be following up to see if what we were promised at a public meeting of always having a 2police officers at Tea gardens is still the case and that we have adequate policing over the holiday period.

If you are heading away and leaving your pet behind, make sure your neighbours or a friend can check on your pet on a regular basis. Double check your fences, gates and surrounds to make sure your pet cannot escape and if they try, they won’t hurt themselves in the process. Speaking with Myall Coast News, Asheligh Bruinsma from Myall Street Veterinary Hospital said, “Owners of all pets need to use commonsense all year round, not just at

Christmas time.” “We offer some great advice and services to pet owners who are concerned about their pets wellbeing during the festive season, and would ask for anyone with concerns to contact us sooner rather than later.” “We haven’t got the facilities here to be an animal shelter either, so if your pet is lost during the festive season, there is a good chance it will end up with the council or even the RSPCA,” she said.

Tea Gardens Womens Bowls By Lily SMITH

TUESDAY 10th November: It was nice to see the sunshine today. Perfect weather for bowling! The Club Novice Consistency continued with the semi-finals being played between Francis Batar and Karen McPhie. Karen took the lead early in the match and, try as she might, Francis could not catch her. Karen won with a score of 150-117. The Club Open Consistency competition commenced with its first round today with four matches being contested. The recent rain caused the Novice and Open Consistency competitions to overlap. In the match between Vicki Rankin and Fay Giggins, after 10 ends it looked like Fay was keeping pace with Vicki but Vicki pulled away winning with a score of 150-117. Good effort from Fay! The Lynne Green/Dale Winter game turned out to be a real cliff-hanger with Lynne leading most of the way. Dale came back towards the end but just could not get in front. After 30 ends, the final score was a win for Lynne 151-149. A great game and well played! The Karen Green/Bev Rhodes match lasted 24 ends with Karen in control of the match from the second end. Try, as she did, Bev just couldn’t get the upper hand. Karen winning 152-88. The remaining match between Maynie Roberts and Lorraine Harvey went to 29 ends. After 4 ends the scores were level, and then Maynie gradually pulled ahead and eventually won the match 150-140. Lorraine did not give in easily. Well played both players! There was a big turnout for Social Bowls today. The format was one game of triples and two games of fours. A lot of attention was on the players competing in the Consistency events with the social players keeping a close eye on the scores. The social bowlers played on the grass green and some of us found it a bit frustrating as we have not played on the grass for several weeks. However, we had fun. The winners with the highest score were Carol Hayden, Pauline Perry, Jill McBride and Jo Younghusband. A big welcome back to Val Hicks, who we haven’t seen for a while. Thursday 12th November: Once again the weather was kind for the Finals of the Novice Consistency which was between Karen McPhie and Julie Kennedy. After 7 ends the score was level, then Karen took the lead. The match continued for 29 ends with both bowlers playing well. Karen finally won the Finals with a score of

q BOWLS: Karen McPhie and Julie Kennedy. 154 – 133. Congratulations Karen! The Open Consistency continued today with 5 matches being played in round 2. Carol Hayden/Sue Gate game was fairly close, with both players giving it their all. After 8 ends the match could have gone either way, but Carol finally took the lead and after a game lasting 28 ends won with a score of 151 – 129. Good game! Wendy Brand/Kathie Rimmer. This match lasted for 29 ends and once again could have gone to either player, until Wendy widened the gap and won the game with a score of 151 – 139. A close fought match. Well Played! Maynie Roberts/ Karen Green. What a contest this was! Lasting for 30 ends with the lead changing several times, and with neither bowler prepared to give an inch, the scores on the 29th end were level. Maynie scored the winning shots on the 30th end to take the match by 152 – 148. Nail Biting stuff!! Well played to both Maynie and Karen! Vicki Rankin/ Lynne Green. This was yet another cliff hanger. Both bowlers kept within reach of each other’s score, with Lynne just in front for most of the match. The game lasted for 30 ends. On the 27th end the score levelled out to 135 – 135, Vicki eventually won the game with a score of 151 – 149. What a match!! Sandra Leisemann/Wendy Jones. Once again we watched a very close game. Wendy led the way for the most of the match with only by a couple of points separating the players, but Sandra won the match on the last end with a score of 153 – 147. Another 30 end marathon! Great Game!! Congratulations to all the contestants, and thank you for giving us such an exciting round 2 Social Bowls: There were 13 social bowlers playing on the grass green today. We had one game of triples and one game of fours (with a swinger). After playing on the grass on Tuesday most of the bowlers seemed to be handling the surface a bit better. The winners for the day, with the highest score were Magda Reid, Merle Sargeant and Liz Kelly. After lunch we all shared in a birthday cake with Jo Younghusband, who celebrated a big “O” Birthday recently. Happy Birthday Jo! Cake was delicious.

Street Surf Series SURF LIFE SAVING

By Peter ROGERS LAST Sunday, Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Surf Life Saving Club (SLSC) Surf Boat Crews travelled to Umina to compete in the first round of the Streets Surf Boat Series. This Surf Boat Series involves Surf Life Saving Clubs from both the Central Coast and Newcastle Branches. In all, 28 clubs took part travelling from as far south as Ocean Beach and Umina to Tea Gardens Hawks Nest in the north. More than 40 crews competed on the day and Tea Garden Hawks had 4 crews travel to compete – one in the opens, 2 in the Masters men and one in the Masters women categories. In choppy surf conditions, after 3 races were held in each division, the Masters Men’s “EC” crew, after 3 wins, came in first. The Open Mens crew, with 2 firsts and one second placing also won their division. A fantastic effort for the Open Men’s crew, with a new combination competing for the first time, against very strong competition.

8 MYALL COAST NEWS of the area

Both the Masters women’s and Master Men “Long Strokers” crews have improved enormously over the off season and are now not far off the pace. Special mention to Peter McClennan rowing 6 races, rowing in both in the Masters EC’s and the Open Men’s crew, a welcome back to Mitch Baker in the Open Men’s and Kate Maddison in the open women’s for her first surf carnival. There is always room for additional people to become involved in surf boat rowing with TGHN as the club continues to gain experience, success and expertise in the sport. The third round of the Streets Series will be held at Tea Gardens Surf Club – Bennetts Beach – on Saturday and Sunday 12 and 13 December. For the first time the lower North Coast Branch clubs will join the carnival with over 70 crews expected to compete. The action will commence at 1pm on the Saturday and continue into Sunday. Please feel free to come down and view the event, have a drink on the verandah and support the local boat crews as they attempt to improve on the great start they have made to the series.

THE daylight savings social golf competition, 12 November, played host a great contingent of players. The overall winner was Bill Hyde winning on a countback from Darren Evans, the runner up. The nearest to the pin was Mitch Malone. The raffle winner for the golf afternoon was Alan Crittenden.

BOWLS Tea Gardens Mens Bowls By The JAFFA

THE big news this week was the announcement by the Tea Gardens Country Club, in conjunction with Hawks Nest First National Real Estate, of the 11 and up Men’s Triples Tournament to be conducted over the weekend of November 21st and 22nd. With prize money of $4,000.00 up for the taking the tournament is bound to attract a crack field from all the “guns’ in the sport and a few locals lucky enough to get a game. The format will be Three-bowl Triples with three games of 15 ends played on Saturday and two games of 15 ends played Sunday. On the Friday evening of 20th November, preceding the tournament, there will be a driving competition followed by a Calcutta at 7.00 p.m. This should be a spectacular event with all the “young bloods” flexing their arms to give it a go. Should be some great viewing! November 11: A good field of 50 bowlers took to the green in warm to hot conditions to contest the usual Wednesday Nominated Triples today. The grass green was in use for some games and played very true with a nice medium speed. Dennis Ashbridge returned to form and played a great came with the assistance of lead, Tom Short and second, Geoffrey Muggleton. They blitzed the field to come away with the money on +33. The team of Peter Jones, John Yabsley and Alan Greenhalgh had a draw in their first game but came home with a wet sail in their second to grab second place on +25, on a countback from Graeme Watkins, Terry Munright and Barry Drayton also on +25. November 13: In Friday Jackpot Pairs today, 20 bowlers played in warm and humid conditions hoping to beat the threatening thunder storms predicted for later in the day. They managed to do that and the strong combination of Stewart Sturrock and Paul Syron won the day, which was decided by the team having the highest margin. They had a score of +11. Runners-up on a respectable +7 were the man with the “golden” arm, Geoff Page and John Yabsley. The two Jackpots($200.00 and $120.00),were not won and if they do not go off in the next couple of weeks they will definitely be drawn on the last official day of the year for Friday Jackpot Pairs on Friday November 4. November 15: In Sunday Introduction to Bowls a field of 23 bowlers played on the synthetic green under threatening skies. A big welcome to Christine and Trevor Davies from Karuah, who have just moved down from Townsville area, and we had a visitor Dawn from Melbourne, a friend of Susan Gates. Winners were drawn from random draw as rain stopped play at about the 11th end. They were; Karen McPhie,Dorothy Thompson, Max Stephens. Lucky losers were Harry Hauben,Tom Short and Stu Sturrock. No coach today but thanks to Allan Wilson and Barry Goode for cooking.

Second edition for paddlers

A SECOND edition of the Paddler’s Guide to New South Wales is the latest in a series of guidebooks created by Australian kayak instructor and author Scott Rawstorne. It contains trip descriptions, maps, colour photographs and logistical details for 140 great paddling destinations and 7 of those are on the Myall Coast; Wallis Lake Nature Reserves, Smiths Lake, Myall Lake, 2 Mile Lake, Mungo Brush, Tea Gardens and Allworth. Scott was inspired to start writing the book in 2007 when

he found that paddling was the perfect antidote to the fluorescently lit workstations and grey suit drudgery of his IT job in Sydney and he realised it could offer the same form of escape to thousands of other weary humans. Improved physical fitness, enhanced mental health, rest and relaxation, stress relief, wildlife encounters, fantastic fishing, exciting backcountry adventures and heaps of fun are just a few of the many benefits of an inexpensive activity that is open to people of all ages.

10 MYALL COAST NEWS of the area

Scott has since spent his time exploring the waterways of the world and has now paddled kayaks, canoes and stand up paddleboards in over 400 locations in 8 countries. You can find out more about his travels on his website www.globalpaddler.com.au. Australia’s “first state” is home to lush sub-tropical rainforests, soaring alpine peaks, sun-kissed outback landscapes, delightful rural countryside, the nation’s capital territory and the most beautiful harbour city on earth.

Herbicide Spraying In Open Drains and Retention Ponds Council will be carrying out herbicide spraying during the months of November, December 2015 and January, February, March 2016 in various open drains and retention ponds within the entire Local Government area, to target grasses, reeds, annual and perennial Weeds. As a precaution residents are advised to refrain from using, drinking or swimming in the water for two weeks following treatments. Only qualified operators will be under taking works. Herbicide Weedmaster Duo (360g/L biactive glyphosate) will be used as per the requirements of the label and APVMA off label permit 9907 where applicable. This program is subject to weather conditions. For a list of areas to be treated or for further information please contact Council’s Weeds Officer Terry Inkson.

Council is considering a project to create a shared path cycleway along Kingfisher Avenue from The Singing Bridge to Ibis Avenue as proposed by the Hawks Nest - Tea Gardens Progress Association. The project involves the removal of the existing concrete kerb blocks on the existing path and allowing the area closer to the traffic lane to be utilised as the shared path cycleway. The project will allow a wider 2m shared path suitable for walking and cycling in each direction, however this will occur closer to the traffic lane along Kingfisher Avenue. Council is asking for submissions on the proposal from interested residents. Submissions can be made by emailing: council@greatlakes.nsw.gov.au or by mail addressed to The General Manager. Submissions to be received by 11 December 2015.
