Men’s Shed are busy as bees

MEN’S Sheds are an important organisation to have in the community.

Not only is it a beneficial time for the men to meet together or for the work that they can achieve but how they can give back to the community.

The Bulahdelah Men’s Shed have embarked on a project that will benefit its town.

Gary Haynes is busy teaching the group how to build bee hives and these bee hives will be handed out to anyone who requests one and is willing to learn how to keep bees.

The need for bees is very real

and has an environmental impact.

Gary Haynes told News Of The Area, “Bees are responsible for the pollination of around 40% of the vegetables and cereals we eat and without bees there would be insufficient food upon which to live.”

On further research into this topic, a number of Bulahdelah locals have explained that there seems to be a lack of bees in the township and this was resulting in a failure of cherry tomatoes and cucumbers to grow this season.

With the donation of materials and training, John Renfrew saw how the Men’s Shed could respond to this need.

The pine was donated from Nerong Park Pastoral Company, the

Wootton Sawmill cut it up and the Men’s Shed have stacked the wood and now are using tools to cut the wood into the right shape for a bee hive that can be flat packed.

Maintenance of a bee hive requires a registration with the Department of Agriculture.

“It’s great that this will have benefits for the community and it gives a project to the Men’s Shed,” explained Gary Haynes.

To help people get involved with the bee-keeping industry the Bulahdelah Men’s Shed is holding a meeting on Thursday 3 March at 6:30pm at the Men’s Shed which is located behind the RSL Memorial Hall.

Participation in the program is through referral from a range of organisations including Lifeline, Family and Children’s Courts, schools and church groups.

The centre, which is privately funded through donations and government grants, employs four full-time and three part-time staff members who are experienced in working with youths at risk.

The new facilities include

rope courses, a dam, canoes, swings, hiking tracks, dining area, amenities and camping ground.

Plans are in place to expand the programs currently offered.

“Pending Council approval, we intend the site will offer over 150 activities as well as cabin accommodation in the future,” Mr Kent told News Of The Area.

Delhuntie Director Mr Elwyn Scale said the organisation has been delivering the successful youth programs at its original centre in Victoria for more than 40 years.

Church offering stolen

ON the morning of the 7 February the offering at the Bulahdelah Uniting Church was collected and placed in a paper envelope.

This offering was taken to a private home and placed in the office area of this residence while the occupant of the house had lunch with other family members.

Later that evening the house occupant went to prepare bank documents to deposit the money on the following day.

At this time it was noticed that the envelope was torn open and most of the cash taken.

Police inquiries are continuing and are confident of an arrest in relation to the matter.

ON Monday 8 February, I was caught up staring at the popular TV show Australia’s Got Talent.

Not normally a fan of this particular show, an act came on which made me stop what I was doing, sit down and watch something very inspirational.

A young man by the name of Matt McLaren had taken to the stage with his keyboard, along with his faithful guide dog ‘Stamford’.

Yes, Matt McLaren is blind and has been since the age of two, but that hasn’t dampened his spirit and taking the reins of his passion for music and singing which blew the crowd and judges away on Australia’s Got Talent.

Matt’s performance won him thousands of fans instantly after his performance on the TV show due to his style and passion.

His style seamlessly blends old school classics with modern hits from a variety of genres including pop, rock, dance, blues and funk.

Over the years Matt has supported amazing local /international recording artists including playing keys for the legendary Doug Parkinson just to name a few.

During the week there was also confusion around if in fact the Myall Quays Community Association (MQCA) were in support or not of the petition in

circulation.

News Of The Area became aware of a letter that was circulated to Myall Quays residents saying the article published last week “Incorrectly States” referencing Myall Quays Community Association.

Information given to News Of The Area clearly stated that the MQCA were in support of the petition. However this may not be correct.

To seek clarification, News Of The Area spoke to Ron Green

Secretary for MQCA DP 270100 who could not confirm if they are in support or not of the petition.

“It is not appropriate for the MQCA to adopt any position on this matter,” he said.

Mr Green said that the article (in last weeks’ News Of The Area) should have said ‘The Progress Association of Hawks Nest and Tea Gardens in conjunction with the ‘concerned residents of Myall Quays’, rather than using any reference to MQCA.

An assault charge

CARNIVAL: Stroud Public School.

ON 29 January, police were called to a Smiths Lake address following an argument between a 41 year old man and a 37 year old woman at the address.

Police inquiries led to the male being arrested a number of days later and he was charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm to the female.

He will appear at Forster court on a date in March in relation to the charge and also in relation to an apprehended violence order surrounding the matter.

Paramedics being attacked

Zero tolerance for anyone assaulting or abusing our Ambulance people

By Daniel SAHYOUN NSW Ambulance has informed News Of The Area it has a zero tolerance policy to any abuse or violence towards its staff.

Figures from NSW Ambulance reveal there were 142 instances of abuse or assault on paramedics reported to police in 2015.

Retired paramedic Mr Bob Richards, who worked from Bulahdelah Ambulance Station for 24 years, said very few incidents occur in rural areas compared to larger cities.

“There are usually more instances in urban areas as they tend to be drug and alcohol related,” he said.

“In rural areas such as Bulahdelah, call-outs are mainly for illness.”

Inappropriate behaviour towards paramedics while providing medical aid can put both the patient and staff at risk.

“When treating someone who has overdosed for example, their friends can make demands hindering treatment. This can be life-threatening,” Mr Richards said.

NSW Ambulance Chief Executive, Commissioner Dominic Morgan, said under the zero tolerance policy, NSW Ambulance will not tolerate any abuse towards its officers.

“Any abuse or intimidation of our on-duty paramedics - be it verbal or physical, is completely unacceptable,” he said.

“NSW Ambulance works closely with NSW Police to ensure that offenders are pursued to the full extent of the law.”

Local paramedics, working from Bulahdelah, Stroud and Tea Gardens, join over 4000 staff employed by NSW Ambulance.

On-call 24-hours-a-day, paramedics provide emergency care, frequently involving lifesaving treatment.

Commissioner Morgan said, “All our staff have the right to work in a safe environment.”

NSW Ambulance has a formal process for feedback, including

avenues for messages of thanks and complaints.

Feedback details are available on the NSW Ambulance website.

IT has been confirmed that Great Lakes Council has agreed to deepen the channel known as the Gut, which runs between Marine Dr and Witt St. It is anticipated to be done sometime in the next financial year and on the advice received from the boat owners, the Myall River Action Group has been asked to endeavour to bring that timing forward.

“Currently boat owners who pay mooring fees which go to maritime services, council and crown land are only able to access their boats when it is high tide,” said spokesperson for the Myall River Action Group, Gordon Grainger.

“The sand has built up to the point where boat owners can only get in and out of their boats at high tide, and to the point where some are constantly resting on sand.”

It is reported that boats moored in that channel are now able to access deeper water only on full tide and that the channel is rapidly becoming unusable. There are currently vessels moored in the affected area representing a financial contribution to various authorities and it is likely that payment of fees may shortly cease.

“Council has made the commitment to undertake the dredging in the next financial year, but we will be presenting council with the facts and costs to bring the dredging date forward.”

“We believe that as a registered mooring area, it is considered to be a navigational obligation and funds should be available to undertake a program earlier than what is forecast,” Mr Grainger told News Of The Area.

At this stage the group is still working to understand what costs are involved with the project.

More people than ever Assistant head is ready for school living with Dementia

DEMENTIA is on the rise but you can do something about it.

New dementia figures for 2016 show more people than ever will be living with the condition this year, but the peak body representing people with the fatal disease says you can live well with it, with the right support.

The figures, prepared for Alzheimer’s Australia NSW by Deloitte Access Economics, show the number of people estimated to be living with dementia in NSW has risen to almost 115,000.

That figure is expected to continue to rise to more than 128,500 people by 2020 and an estimated 272,000 people by 2050 if a cure or significant medical breakthrough is not found.

While there has been growth in dementia prevalence estimates in every single electorate in NSW, towns up and down the NSW coast are experiencing the highest impact, in terms of dementia prevalence rates.

The state electoral divisions of Tweed, Myall Lakes, Port Macquarie, Bega and Oxley remain in the top five in terms of dementia prevalence estimates.

Alzheimer’s Australia NSW CEO The Hon. John Watkins AM said

dementia does not discriminate and will impact every community across NSW. “Dementia is the second leading cause of death in Australia, after heart disease, and there is no cure,” Mr Watkins said.

In the Myall Lakes, Newcastle, Port Stephens and Upper Hunter state electorates there is estimated to be 5,650 people living with dementia, which is expected to increase to an estimated 6,250 people by 2020 and 12,150 by 2050.

But, Mr Watkins said, while the figures are alarming, there is hope for those living with dementia.

“Dementia can be a very isolating, confusing, confronting and difficult disease to live with,” he said.

“But you are not alone. There is a whole range of help available and, with the right support, you can live well with dementia. A great starting point is calling Alzheimer’s Australia NSW on the National Dementia Helpline on 1800 100 500.

“Our professional and compassionate staff can talk to you about what is happening, give you advice and strategies for how to manage now and into the future, and point you in the right direction for further support and other services – all for free.

“Some great programs that have proven to be really helpful include Living with Dementia and Recently Diagnosed, both of which have really proved to be a lifeline to many participants.

“There is also the new website Living Well with Dementia, developed by our colleagues at Alzheimer’s Australia Vic, that contains a whole range of information and tips on how to live well with dementia, and includes personal stories from people who are dealing with it right now.”

Mike and Linda Bryan completed the Living with Dementia program following Mike’s diagnosis of dementia in August 2013.

“I was quite off balance after I had my diagnosis and you become insecure,” Mr Bryan said.

“Going to the Living with Dementia program gave me various strategies which helped me cope more successfully with my condition.”

Mrs Bryan said she also got valuable information about dementia, along with good strategies about how to live happily in her new role as a carer.

“We enjoyed meeting other people in the same situation and sharing ideas and support,” she said.

MEMBER for Myall Lakes Stephen Bromhead was delighted at the response to his request for a meeting of stakeholders with an interest in assisting people with dementia, due to the increasing rate of dementia in Myall Lakes.

Mr Bromhead said more than forty people representing community organisations including Probus, Lions and Rotary, special interest groups, Great Lakes Council and Alzheimer’s Australia met at the Tuncurry Bowling Club.

“As Myall Lakes has the highest proportion of people aged over 65 in NSW and we have the second highest prevalence of people suffering from dementia, I wanted to bring these parties together to see what our community can do to assist people with dementia,” Mr Bromhead said.

“Although some of these organisations have developed programs to help people with dementia, there is little coordination of their programs and activities.

“Weheardfromtherepresentative from Alzheimer’s Australia that a few other cities and regions have set up coordinating bodies whose purpose is to help communities with some simple things that can help people with dementia.

“One example is asking cafes and restaurants to print special menus with a larger font size to assist reading, not only by people with dementia, but also seniors and those with poor eyesight.”

EXPERIENCE: New Assistant Principal Rod Pye

By Daniel SAHYOUN BULAHDELAH Central School has welcomed new staff member Mr Rod Pye this week who has commenced his duties as Assistant Principal at the school.

Replacing long-serving staff member Stan Backhouse who retired last year, Mr Pye was formerly a teacher and Relieving Principal at Karuah Primary School, a position he held for 15 years.

With over 25 years teaching experience, Mr Pye said the best thing about being a teacher is seeing his students achieve to their potential.

“It’s important to understand the needs of every student to maximise their learning opportunities,” he said.

With the changes in education as a result of advances in technology, Mr Pye believes that it is especially

important to apply aspects of technology in all areas of teaching and learning.

“Technology is a great assistant in the classroom, as classes can do video conferencing with other schools, access remote areas such as Antarctica, and there are even apps which can help with literacy,” Mr Pye said.

Taking on a Year 2/3 class this year, Rod is passionate about improving his students’ literacy skills, especially utilising the L3 program which covers Language, Literacy and Learning.

Mr Pye, who brings a wealth of experience having also taught at Taree, Wingham, Forster and Pacific Palms Primary Schools, is eager to start his new position at Bulahdelah Central School.

“I’m looking forward to working with both the students and the community during the year,” he said.

News Of The Area’s Daniel SAHYOUN talks with Great Lakes Young Citizen Of The Year, Ruby Keys GREAT Lakes Young Citizen of the Year Ruby Keys, travelled to Sydney last week to continue her work with the homeless, a passion which earned her this year’s honour.

Loaded with bags of food, the Pindimar teenager hit the streets to assist those in need.

Ruby’s work with the homeless began when she was 14, after witnessing the number of people living on Sydney’s streets while attending a school excursion.

“I had never actually seen homelessness before, but in Sydney it’s everywhere,” she said.

“Talking to some of the homeless, I got to know them on a personal level which was very emotional, I just wanted to help.”

Ruby’s determination to assist was evident on her birthday when her only wish was to help the homeless.

“Some friends and I went

homeless and is not judgemental of their circumstances,” she said.

“She has a very giving nature and is able to identify a need and work out solutions to fix the issue.”

Many other students of the school have also been successfully nominated for the Young Citizen Award during the past five years.

“It’s been a pleasure to acknowledge and nominate our students for their exceptional work and achievements in our local communities,” Mrs Gilbert said.

Ruby, now in her final year of school, is looking towards a career working with Aid Organisations.

“I don’t want to see people in a position where they have no one to help them,” Ruby said.

“I didn’t do the work to be acknowledged, I just wanted to help.”

THE Myall Coast Chamber of Commerce and Tourism closed off 2015 with their last general meeting in early December, but they were already looking forward and planning to enable many projects coming to fruition early in 2016 and of course setting their sights once again at the Myall River Festival for later this year.

The group have quite a few things on the ‘to-do’ list this year, and the boxes are starting to get ticked.

The Chamber commenced the project and pursued funding donations from a variety of groups, which has resulted in a new CCTV Camera being installed and is now fully functional and located outside the Tea Gardens Police Station.

Manned and monitored by the Police, the systems capabilities to monitor the Marine Drive area along with some private CCTV systems at adjoining businesses will have increased overall security and safety along Marine Drive.

Community groups that have already submitted applications are being urged to contact Council’s Lyndie Hepple on 6591 7490 to

Community groups can apply for up to $2,000 and the funding aims to benefit local, not-for-profit organisations or groups.

By Rebekka CUNNINGHAM TEA Gardens has been identified as a recipient of funds provided by the State Government through the “Boating Now” program to provide much needed improvements to the waterfront facilities.

It has been acknowledged that the Tea Gardens waterfront is sadly lacking in mooring capacity, particularly in holiday periods and each weekend.

The monetary figure is estimated to be in the vicinity of $250K, and it is hoped that some of the money will go towards building a tidal pool in the Myall River opposite the Fish and Chip Shop.

Tea Gardens was well known and appreciated by residents and visitors for its tidal pool located opposite the current Riverside Apartments on Marine Drive.

This pool was used and revered until the 1960s’and

removed when it fell into disrepair.

The result of this proposal would be to add sufficient mooring capacity for recreational boats as well as offer safe swimming facilities for residents and visitors.

“These matters have been raised at Progress Association meetings, bought to the attention of the Chamber of Commerce and we have their support,” said Gordon Grainger of the Myall River Action Group.

“We also have the support of all commercial houses and residents with whom we have spoken and we have whole hearted support from the community who use the waterfront on a regular basis.”

“It is my understanding that finalisation discussions are shortly to be held with officers from RMS.” “We look forward to what will hopefully be a positive result,” Mr Grainger said.

Shucking time for oyster farmers

JANUARY is normally a hectic period for most local businesses, and more often than not it also proves to be the most profitable few weeks of the year with a steady flow of visitors.

One attraction for holiday makers is of course Karuah’s famous oysters, but due to the heavy rains experienced in early January, oyster Farmers at Karuah were left devastated as were hundreds of customers when the farmers were unable to supply any oysters.

One family operated company at Karuah, Cole Brothers Oysters, were left high and dry for nearly five weeks due to the heavy downfalls around the Karuah River and like all

“With many people on holidays and passing through town, the local Farmers here have always enjoyed that extra boost of income with an influx of visitors. Unfortunately this year we couldn’t supply them oysters which was a blow.”

“The indicator for us is when we have a deluge of 40mm of rain or more. Water samples are sent to Safe Foods NSW and if the salinity level of

the water goes too high it could make oysters prone to some diseases. It’s Safe Food NSW call if we can supply or not. Unfortunately this time round it took five weeks for the water levels to return to normal,” he said.

On most days you’ll see Paula Cole busily opening and preparing oysters for sale in the retail shop.

Speaking with News Of The Area she said, “It was devastating for us and the other growers to be unable to supply oysters in January, but we’re back in business and it’s as busy as usual.”

“The boys were kept busy with some maintenance and catching up with odd jobs, and for once we even managed an entire weekend or two off which was nice,” she said.

Whistle blower on cannabis AT about 4:30pm 6 February, police attended a Myall Street Bulahdelah address in relation to a report of cannabis plants growing in the rear yard.

Police attended the rear of the property and

observed a number of cannabis plants to be growing inside of the property boundary.

Police then attended the front door of the residence and had a conversation with a female and male from the house.

Police were then led to the rear yard of the house where eleven cannabis plants were seized.

The male from the address is to attend court for the growing of the cannabis which will be destroyed.

q AMAZING: The littoral rainforest on the headland between Number One Beach and Boat Beach at Seal Rocks is of national significance and has been protected as part of Myall Lakes National Park since 2003.

Tour of coastal restoration works

LOVERS of littoral rainforest are invited to join Great Lakes Council, the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) and the Australian Association of Bush Regenerators (AABR) on a morning tour of the coastal restoration works at Seal Rocks on Saturday 27 February.

The littoral rainforest on the headland between Number One Beach and Boat Beach at Seal Rocks is of national significance and has been protected as part of Myall Lakes National Park since 2003, but despite appearances, it hasn’t always been that way.

The area once supported a homestead and included a small quarry.

When the quarry closed in the mid 1980’s, the area was re-planted and left to regenerate naturally.

Some of this area of revegetated rainforest was subsequently cleared for urban and commercial developments, resulting in a range of impacts on the biodiversity and quality of the remaining forest.

Subsequent weed invasion, rubbish dumping, illegal camping, roadside and powerline clearing have

all impacted on the natural asset.

With public access to beaches, dune clearing and weed invasion, the Seal Rocks coastal area suffered a significant reduction in biodiversity.

Several regeneration programs have been implemented over the last ten years, involving NPWS, Council, local volunteers and youth training programs.

“Most recently, a five year Federal Government Biodiversity Grant has led to a partnership between Council and NPWS to undertake restoration to the coastal environs, including the endangered littoral rainforest and beaches at Seal Rocks,” said Council’s Environmental Officer, Isabelle Strachan.

The Biodiversity Grant project is currently in its fourth year at Seal Rocks, and the restoration and reduction in weeds around the Seal Rocks village and rainforest is quite remarkable.

“It looks fantastic, and even though the rehabilitation is very slow, we are starting to see success in Seal Rocks. The program has resulted in outstanding ecological restoration, reduction in threats to a significant vegetation community, delivery of a

new program to initiate weed control on private property through our Backyard Bushcare Program, and new recordings of significant threatened species (such as magenta lilly pilly),” said NPWS Ranger, Rachel Kempers.

Join local bush regeneration contractors and GLC / NPWS staff to look at the restoration works completed in the rainforest and on the beaches; and see the results of long term regeneration programs of this endangered ecological vegetation community.

Learn how these works have extended to include the control of priority weeds on private property through the engagement of local Seal Rocks residents in the “Backyard Bushcare Program”.

The Great Lakes actually gets two stopovers which is great promotion for our shire - Forster on the Thursday night and Tea Gardens on the Friday night.

Lower Myall River

The dredging of the original channel has been completed.

Top up and navigational dredging of the Corrie Island Channel as well as other spots along the river up to Slip Island are planned to occur shortly.

Council is currently liaising with Soil Conservation Services regarding stabilisation of the Winda Woppa stockpile.

Regular site inspections are being undertaken to ensure the stockpile isn’t moving/significant blow-out in the meantime.

Two pairs of the endangered Little Tern have been reported nesting on top of the newly created stockpile.

The Designer has been contracted to develop sand-transfer system.

Council is currently trialling movement of trucks on the Winda Woppa beach as risk management until sand-transfer station is completed.

Council has received approval to undertake a trial to profile sand on Jimmy’s Beach from its existing slump face, to a more usable 1:8 grade.

loss from the face of the dune as well as improving access and amenity of the beach.

The trial is proposed for the more stable end of the beach (near Gemalla St), if successful Council will look to extend the trial closer to the key erosion spot.

North Arm Cove

Water quality sample results for the September 2015 event indicated high presence of human impacts at all but one sample location.

Council has continued to focus on OSMS inspections in NAC. Any overflowing pump-out systems or failing systems have been notified to NSW Food Authority and actioned through Council’s procedure process.

Funding has been received to install a dinghy launch at two locations in North Arm Cove.

The project is waiting on final state government approval which is expected to be received very soon.

Friendly and positive Dear News Of The Area,

Without doubt there are disadvantages in living in a small community relatively far from a major city.

However every now and again there is a strong reminder of just how friendly and welcoming is our community.

There I am, all over HN and TG and on a very hot day, seeking window spaces for an A4 “flyer” for bridge lessons starting early March.

The responses were all the same “Good on you” and “Awesome” and “Here let me put it up for you”.

Okay the lessons will be fun for the students.

However the giver of those lessons - me - got such a huge kick out of the friendly and positive responses I received that I came away smiling and singing, albeit out of tune. Thanks to you all.

Dear News Of The Area,

Grey and Thespian Mardi Gras?!?!

You could be forgiven for asking: “What the heck is that?”

So, please let me explain in the words of Trevor Jennings, president of the local Progress Association, “The Grey and Thespian Mardi Gras, to be held from the 8th to the 10th of April, is a fabulous weekend that’s primarily aimed at celebrating our senior citizens and their valuable contribution to the community as well as providing a fun weekend to the many ‘Grey Nomads’ that visit our lovely twin towns.”

The weekend is planned and organised by the Hawks Nest/Tea Garden’s Progress Association in collaboration with the Myall Coast Chamber of Commerce and Tourism, the Hawks Nest Golf Club and the Myall Coast Entertainers.

The weekend’s activities will begin on Friday, April 8th with a ‘Grey Nomads Cup’ golf competition and will be concluded with a popular film, to be shown at the Hawks Nest Community Hall that night.

Saturday will be a day filled with entertainment, offered free of charge at the Hawks Nest Village Square. The entertainment comprising of music, dancing, poetry, and all sorts of other fun will be provided by a variety of local

and regional performing artists.

The adjoining car park will be filled with market stalls that enable locals as well as visiting folk with opportunities to purchase local wares.

To conclude this exciting day with a special event there will be a masked 'Black and White' dinner/ dance, held at the Golf Club, with fabulous music provided by two local bands who specialise in 1940's to 1960's music.

For those of you who prefer a less energetic evening the Myall Coast Entertainers will be hosting a great night of fun radio plays at the Hawks Nest Community Hall.

Not to forget the youngsters whilst celebrating our wonderful seniors there will be an 11am movie session on Sunday for the young as well as the young at heart.

The excellent film to be shown at the Community Hall that morning will be complemented by interactive fun for children and provides a smooth transition from Seniors Week into Youth Week and the start of the school holidays.

This fabulous weekend will come to a happy close with another great film to be shown on Sunday evening.

Bulahdelah Fishing Club President Mr Darren Carrall, said the weekend competition was successful and well-supported.

“The turnout was far better than we predicted, things ran smoothly with everyone having a go and enjoying themselves” he said.

“The water and weather conditions were spot on and we had lots of fish caught

profits from the weekend are used to improve the Bass population in the river.

“We buy fingerlings to restock the river with State Fisheries matching us dollar for dollar,” he said.

The Bulahdelah Fishing Club would like to thank their sponsors who contributed to the success of the weekend.

“Without our sponsors, we wouldn’t be able to run the event,” Mr Carrall said.

10 FEBRUARY: The Club is really getting some nice fields for Wednesday Nominated Triples.

In fine, hot conditions 56 bowlers competed on both greens.

This week, thankfully, no teams came in with an extreme score with all placegetters confined to something resembling average.

The very experienced team of; Ken McKeown, Daryl Martin and John Carey came in third on +24 points.

Second place was filled by; Graeme Watkins, John Wright, (on yet his umpteenth visit from the UK.), and Paul Goodwin. They had +25.

It was the “polished” performance of; John Ashton, John Yabsley and Alan Greehalgh that took the money when they returned a +36. Good Bowling!

12 February: Denied a game last Friday, 22 Friday Jackpot Pairs Bowlers competed on a fine and sunny summer’s day.

The Club welcomed 3 visitors, Neil Patterson, Shane Dennis and John Sippel. Welcome gentlemen!

By Daphne MOTUM MANY of our members ventured up the lakes in the first week of January which was wonderful weather but that all changed on 4 January with everyone scurrying to sheltered corners when the wind and rain hit.

The lake rose 5’6” so it was just as well we were in boats and not tents.

Australia Day weekend saw another group gathering for one member’s special birthday and others travelled to Port Stephens and outside for some game fishing.

February 27/28 will see our first official activity with a catered event - a spit roast to be held at Korsmans.

This will include nibblies, meats, vegies and sweets. Cost will be $15.00 per adult and $1.00 for each year of a child’s age.

We will also be having our Annual Damper Competition.

Easter outing will be a nomadic expedition around the lakes possibly starting in Tea Gardens, morning tea at Engel’s and from there up to the bottom lake.

Saturday night will be at Shelleys with a catered dinner.

April 23/24 will be at Taits where we will have the highest score competition for the social darts held last Thursday evening.

The mens highest score winner for the evening was Paul Roberts, scoring 128 points.

There were 4 games of Pairs and one game of Triples.

It was the Triples team of Barry Goode, Kevin Barbie and George Winter that had the highest margin of +23 and took home the money.

They were followed by Ray Prigg and Shane Dennis, the Gulgong import, (This man can really bowl!), they had +15.

Five winning cards were eligible for the jackpot but the correct winning marble did not drop.

The Jackpot next week stands at $80.00.

Just a reminder that the jackpot this year will have no ceiling!

The draw for the Minor Singles Championship has been made and the First Round will commence next Saturday, 20 February with Bill,(Bondi), Moon challenging the very much inform Bill Helybut. This will be a great game!

The Minor Singles has attracted

a really good field this year with 17 entries and offers many rookies a chance to “have a go”.

The usual annual Corporate Day will be held on Saturday afternoon 27 February, commencing at 4.00 p.m.

It is anticipated that 22 Sponsors are likely to take part. Additional Club bowlers would be required, both men and women, and an entry form would be posted to gauge those interested.

One recognised bowler would be required for each team.

TUESDAY, 9 February, what a beautiful day for bowls.

After all the hot and wet weather we have experienced over the past few weeks, it was a pleasure to be able to enjoy our game to the full.

There were 32 bowlers in attendance. Our Pennant teams were there, apart from one player, to practice our skills for the season ahead.

To enable us to have lunch, before our bimonthly meeting at 1.30, all games were scored after 18 ends The winners with the highest margin were, Pam Gilchrist, Olive McKeown, Wendy Jones and Loretta Baker.

Thursday, 11 February, there was a fairly good turnout today with 22 bowlers ready to play.

Once again the weather was kind to us with a breeze helping to keep the temperature bearable.

The format was 2 games of fours and one game of 2 bowl triples.

The winners for the day with, the lowest score, were Karen McPhie, Bev Rhodes, Jo Younghusband and Wendy Brand.

SWIMMING

MYALL Masters Swimming Club hosted their third extremely successful Swim Meet on Saturday, 8 February at the Tea Gardens Pool.

The Meet attracted 22 Clubs from across the State and a Victorian club was represented.

Approximately 160 swimmers and their supporters enjoyed perfect weather, crystal clear pool clarity and manicured lawns, competitive swimming events, genuine hospitality and

an all-round great Meet.

The local community added to the success of the Meet supporting the club by assisting with the BBQ, donating to the raffle, selling raffle tickets, being ‘’runners’’ with the results, cooking and serving.

Club members generously donated to the raffle as did local businesses Hawks Nest Newsagency, Hawks Nest Pharmacy, Tile Rescue and Myall Beans & Leaves.

AWARDED: Encouragement Award goes to Natasha Marlin.

THE Bulahdelah Bass Bash was held last weekend with perfect conditions on the Myall River.

The event attracted over 200 competitors aged from six to 85, with the common goal of reeling in the biggest Bass.

With a competition area stretching from Bombah Point to Tamboy and Nerong, there was no shortage of vantage points on the water for serious anglers.

Honours in the senior division went to John Startin winning the Leplaw Trophy with his catch of a 1.6kg Bass with minor placings taken

by Luke Moore and Grant Bidgood.

Sheryl Barry scored a win in the Ladies section with Kerry Thompson runner up.

In the juniors, the Vince Malone title went to Klayton Haynes, narrowly defeating Matt Barry and Scott Smith.
