Digital TV Reception on track for January
By Rachel REITSMA DIGITAL Television reception has been an ongoing concern for the residents of Bulahdelah along with many other areas throughout the Myall Coast Region. Many having no, little or very poor television reception and opting to watch DVD’s instead. So it is welcomed news that Paterson MP Bob Baldwin has just reported that the Gan Gan and Wallaroo digital television towers are now up and running. Mr Baldwin said he had been advised by RBAH that new viewers’ antennas will have to be repointed and receivers manually retuned for them to pick up the service. Towns that are covered from the Gan Gan site include Nelson Bay, Shoal Bay, Fingal Bay, Corlette, Soldiers Point and Tea Gardens/ Hawks Nest. Mr Baldwin was approached by Myall Coast News about the situation for Bulahdelah. It has been reported that the
tower that services the area of Bulahdelah had issues due to the strength of the wind and a tower is now being built at a brand new site around Alum Mountain. “It was all systems go but there has been some engineering issues which are presently being worked on. “The new tower moved to the area of Alum Mountain, instead of being situated at Nerong, because this will allow a larger area of coverage through the valleys. “The new tower will be operational in January 2016. “Importantly, seek professional advice from an installer on what is best for your household.” Mr Baldwin said RBAH advised that more than 40 local installers attended an information briefing on Wednesday 9 December. There is now a public information sheet with detailed information on the best equipment and how to manually tune available from RBAH on the NBN website - www.nbntv. com.au.

ON THE WATER: Tony Woodfield and Cohen Callaghan-Morante.
It’s crackdown time for Maritime By Dave BRAZIER THE Myall Lakes and Port Stephens water ways will be busier than ever this Christmas Holiday period with some excellent forecasts being boasted for boating enthusiasts. Despite several warnings during the year in less than favourable weather conditions,
some people have chosen to ignore the warnings and have still headed out into the blue wonder and found themselves in trouble, and later discovering they have not had enough equipment or the wrong equipment to help them get out of trouble. Speaking with Tea Gardens Maritime NSW Officer Mr Tony
Woodfield, he told Myall Coast News, “We want everyone to enjoy the water ways in the area. There are rules set in place so that can be made possible but of course some people choose to ignore the rules and that’s where we come in and enforce the rules”.

MANNING Regional Art Gallery had the privilege this year of displaying the Manning Great Lakes High Schools Technology Display. The display was open to the public from Wednesday 25 November - Saturday 28 November and some of the participating high schools were Bulahdelah Central School, Taree High, Chatham High, Gloucester High, Great Lakes College and a number of other Taree high schools. The Technology Display has been running for 24 years. Graham Taylor, of Wingham High School, is an organiser of the event along with Steven Foxwell, from Taree High. Steven spoke with Myall Coast News about the importance of the Exhibition. “This is a great collegial event and the aim is to create competitiveness between the schools in the region but mainly to allow an exchange of ideas. “There has been a range of items on display over the years, from CD racks, jewellery boxes and desks.” Local Bulahdelah Central School student, Ellie Gooch, won an award for her entry which was a roll-top desk. “Judging the work is based on craftsmanship and a display of expertise in many skills.
q TECHNOLOGY: Councillor Allan Tickle- Greater Taree City Council, Dr. David Gillespie- MP for Lyne Taree, Ellie Gooch, Greg Dixon- Manning River Steel. “If the item includes different joints and parts and uses many techniques, like Ellie’s roll-top desk, then it will be awarded.” “There needs to be a real combination of art and technology as the items must be functional and aesthetically pleasing.” The Technology Display has been on display in the past at the Council Chambers in Forster and at
Bunnings but this is the second year that it has found a display home at the Manning Regional Art Gallery. It was important to have a supervised, high profile and airconditioned space. Steven explained that this year the Display was held on a weekend and not just during the week like in 2014 and in 2016 the Display will be held for two weeks.
Black spot program
a single funding programme in the history of mobile telecommunications in Australia,” Mr Baldwin said. Locations nominated as mobile black spots by people living in the Paterson electorate will be added to a national database. The database will be provided to mobile operators as part of a competitive selection process, where operators will be required to nominate sites where they would build new or upgraded base stations to serve the black spot locations nominated by the public. The Government will then select successful locations in accordance with the ranking process set out in the Mobile Black Spot Programme Round 2 guidelines, which will be issued publicly prior to the commencement of the competitive selection process. Successful locations under Round 2 should be announced by the end of 2016.
PATERSON MP Bob Baldwin has called for nominations of mobile black spot locations in the electorate to be submitted by 31 December for consideration under Round 2 of the Mobile Black Spot Programme. “The Commonwealth Government has committed $60 million which will help provide new or upgraded mobile coverage in Paterson under Round 2 of the Mobile Black Spot Programme,” Mr Baldwin said. Black spot nominations for Round 2 of the Programme can be made online at www. communications.gov.au/blackspots and then emailed to Mr Baldwin at bob.baldwin. mp@aph.gov.au “The Coalition Government understands the importance of mobile coverage in regional and remote areas of Australia. The Coalition invested $100 million under Round 1 of the programme which will see almost 500 new mobile base stations built nationally. This is the biggest one-time increase in mobile coverage from

Young writer shines bright

WRITING stories can easily become an addictive pastime. When you are in the right creative mood and start the pen squiggling, assure me sometimes it’s really hard to stop. For 15 or so students from Tea Gardens Public School, they have been busy for half the year designing their own books, complete with story lines and illustrations that would make writers of any age group proud. I was fortunate enough to be invited to the schools presentation awards for their budding young writers who have, in my honest opinion, a terrific future ahead of them. The creative and honest nature of all the stories and books produced by the students involved
are really inspiring as to what the next generation are able to offer book worms in the future. In his address to the students and guests at the ceremony, Mr Ross Weightman described how each of the children utilized time on Friday afternoons to produce each of their books and storylines, and was more than impressed with the creativity and effort put into each of them using a high q level of skill involving accurate spelling and grammar, including positive thinking and producing entertaining narratives for fellow students to enjoy. Members from The North Arm Cove Fellowship of Australian Writers NSW volunteered to judge this years entries and as described during their speeches also, the high level of skill shown amongst the

Planning for a Peaceful End By Felicity Wardhaugh
If you have been watching television or reading the newspapers lately you may have heard discussions about the fear of a prolonged but meaningless life. Your family members might have echoed this sentiment: “switch me off if I am just a vegetable, I don’t want to linger on for the sake of it”. How, though, does this happen legally? You cannot make your wishes known if you have already fallen into a vegetative state. ST Stephen’s Catholic Church at Tea Gardens was filled with the joyful sounds of children’s voices when the Myall Coast Catholic Parish recently celebrated their Sunday Liturgy. The whole Parish, which includes the churches at Karuah, Bulahdelah and Tea Gardens, gathered to say farewell and give thanks for the dedicated, loving service of the Parish Pastoral Coordinator, Sister Margaret Valentine, RSC. Sister Margaret is leaving the Parish after 9 years. The children from St Joseph’s School, Bulahdelah, enriched the Liturgy with song and dance. A song of blessing was sung just for Sister Margaret and had people

wiping tears from their eyes. The high esteem Sister Margaret is held in was evident by the attendance of members of other local Christian churches and the wider community. The Congregational Leader of the Sisters of Charity, Sister Clare travelled from Sydney with Sister Deirdre and Sister Jean to share the occasion with the Parish. During a plentiful luncheon, presentations were made to Sister Margaret. The words of gratitude and affection spoken to Sister Margaret were echoed from the hearts of parishioners throughout the Parish. Sister Margaret planted a shrub next to a plaque which specifies her years of devoted ministry to our communities.

Ran over leg after scooter accident
Car ignites on highway
AT about 11.10pm 3 December police, ambulance and rural fire units attended a serious motor vehicle collision on the Pacific Highway eight kilometres north of Bulahdelah. A sedan driven by a 26 year old male collided heavily with a semi trailer driven in the same direction. The sedan soon after burst into flames and was totally destroyed by the ensuing fire. As a result the male driver of the sedan was air lifted to John Hunter Hospital with critical injuries. The male’s condition has improved and he is now in a satisfactory condition. Police investigations into the cause of the collision are continuing.
No dispute
IN the early hours of the 9 December police were called to a domestic dispute at Burdekins Road, Bulahdelah. On arrival police were informed that no such event had taken place. Following inquiries into the matter a 55 year old male was arrested and charged with driving with the high range prescribed concentration of alcohol. He is set to appear at Forster court in early 2016.

RFS one of four after trivia
By Daniel SAHYOUN
OVER the past six months, Bulahdelah Bowling Club has held a successful Trivia Competition under the direction of Dave Saul and John Sahyoun. The nights were well supported by the community and visitors to the area and proved to be competitive and fun for all involved. All money raised from the
Trivia Nights was recently donated to charities and not-for-profit organisations. Trivia participants nominated organisations with four being selected to receive a donation through a random draw. The profits were split evenly between the Bulahdelah Rural Fire Service, Bulahdelah Hospital Auxiliary, Great Lakes Nursing Home and the
Delhuntie Youth Park. Trivia coordinator John Sahyoun said, “We were really excited by the response to the trivia nights and we hope that this will be an ongoing event. “Not only was it entertaining, but helped raise much needed funds for the Bulahdelah community,” he said. The Bulahdelah Bowling Club thanks all involved and hopes to see everyone back for Trivia in 2016.
WE, at the Myall Coast News (affectionately know locally still as the NOTA), wish you and your families a beautiful and safe Christmas. Thanks for continually reading the paper and supporting our experienced and professional team. Best Wishes, Ann, Mick, Rachel, Dave, Dawn, Sonja and Ian. :) Take Care!
Camping is certain By Dave BRAZIER
Federal Member for Paterson
CAMPING for some people is an activity enjoyed only a couple of times per year. Easter is of course a popular time of year with favourable weather conditions and of course Christmas time, camped up near a waterway of some sort with a boat in tow is a must for many families. The Myall Lakes National Park camping areas are ready to go and are preparing for an influx of campers to popular dedicated camping areas such as White Tree Bay, Mungo Brush, Stewart & Lloyds, Banksia Green and The Wells. Having experienced camping in the White Tree Bay area back in the good old days (before kids) it only highlighted my lifelong love of the Myall Coast, as my wife and I would make the venture up every two weeks for weekends at a time. Re-visiting the area a couple of weeks ago
most of the camping areas have changed from days of old, and for the better I might add. Long gone are the single and very smelly pit toilets that attracted long queues every morning, now replaced with clean and efficient eco-toilet systems, gas BBQ’s, lush lawns and marked out camping spots. Noticeably there are a lot fewer camping spots available these days, and even a booking system is available from NPWLS so you don’t miss out on your favourite spot. The biggest attractions are still there, being the waterway, nearby Bennetts Beach and of course via a ride on the Punt, Myall Shores Resort. The National Parks & Wildlife Service have put a lot of work into the Myall Lakes National Park over the years to make your next camping trip as enjoyable and family friendly as possible, so why not enjoy it over the coming holiday period.

IN SONG: Great Lakes Council Christmas Carols are an ever growing popular event.
Carols at the Great Lakes Council CHRISTMAS Eve might be the time you decide to complete your end of year business at Great Lakes Council. You’ll be most welcome to pop in and share some Christmas cheer with Council staff and Councillors, even if you have no Council business to attend to. For many years now, Council employees have pooled their considerable musical talents to perform “Carols in the Office”, serenading a growing crowd each year in Forster’s Customer Service
Centre in Breese Parade Forster. This year the carolling gets underway at 9am on Thursday 24 December. The whole community is invited to attend to share some good old fashioned Christmas Spirit. It is an opportunity to be together at this very important time of the year and reflect on the year past. “Christmas is a very special time, not only for family and friends, but for the community at large to share good cheer with each other.
I do hope you will be able to join us, even if only for a short while, to enjoy some carols and sing along with us,” said Mayor Cr Jan McWilliams. “This is an opportunity for Council staff and councillors to thank local people for everything they do to build community in the Great Lakes.” There will be something for everyone, especially children, so come along and bring your friends! If you feel like it, dress up festively. See you on Christmas Eve.
PRESIDENT of the Myall Koala & Environment Group, Jill Madden along with Koala Group Committee members Peter Madden, Gail and Ian Morphett last month attended a forum at Newcastle University to discuss the plight of koalas in the Hunter region, particularly the Port Stephens area. Speakers at the forum included, Tim Roberts from the Tom Farrell Institute for the Environment, Sue Swain Vice President of the Hunter Koala Preservation Society, Damian Higgins from the Koala Health Hub
at Sydney University, Don Hudson a vet from the Noahs Ark Vet Clinic, Brian Tracey from University of Western Sydney and John Clulow from Newcastle Uni. Many topics were covered including the dramatic decline in koala numbers in Port Stephens, loss of urban habitat trees, broken movement corridors, illnesses such as Cryptococcosis, Koala Retro Virus and Chlamydia, road kills and dog attacks. Agreeable at the forum was that the local koala population needs to be declared “endangered”
to increase the focus on protecting them. However, it was discussed that the lack of accurate historic and current koala population data makes it difficult to convince the NSW Scientific Committee. Funding needs to be obtained to carry out radio tracking of the local koala population. All areas of the state, including us in Hawks Nest/ Tea Gardens, struggle with the same problem of the inability to accurately understand their koala populations.

HERO: Connor Walker presented with Ambulance Star Award.
By Dave BRAZIER TRYING to get a 12 year old to help out around the house these days for some parents is a nightmare. But when 12 year old North Arm Cove resident Connor Walker witnessed his parents, who are both Paramedics with the NSW Ambulance Service, leap into action to treat a woman and her child on April 17 after a house fire at North Arm Cove just five doors down from his own house he did the unthinkable, and worked right alongside them without a hint of hesitation. Recognising his bravery and courage during this incident, the NSW Ambulance Service last week presented the Karuah Public School Student with the ‘Ambulance NSW’s Star Award’. Attending the presentation were Connors proud parents Jan and Allan Walker, along with NSW Ambulance Service Inspectors Graeme Silver, Lauren Lowrie and NSW Ambulance Service Superintendent Steve Matheson. Accepting the award at Karuah For Lease
Public School last Wednesday as part of the schools annual presentation awards ceremony, Connor, who was also the Vice Captain of the school was a little speechless at first and stated ‘I’m a little lost for words, I didn’t expect this at all.” Speaking with Myall Coast News last Friday, a very humbled Connor said, ‘Some of my friends have called me a hero, I don’t think I am at all. I just did what I thought I had to do”. Asked whether he would like to follow in his parents footsteps and become a Paramedic, Connor said “Nah, I want to become an Officer with the Army. My brother has just graduated from the College at Duntroon and is headed to Townsville to now train as a Black Hawk Pilot.” Connor is finishing his schooling time at Karuah Public School and is looking forward to starting high school next year at Hunter River High. Congratulations Connor on your award, you have done yourself, your family and community proud.

The much anticipated Rotary Raffle for a Car has now been drawn ON Monday, 14 December, Warren Gooley General Manager of the Tea Gardens Country Club pressed the button for the lucky winner of a Toyota Yaris which has been raffled by the Rotary Club of Myall Coast to raise funds to be donated
back to the local community and charitable organisations. The idea to raffle a car originated in Florida when Rotarian, Jim Martin with his wife, June, were on holidays and engaged in conversation with another Rotarian who said to Jim, “Don’t waste your time with $2.00 raffles – raffle a car.” On their return to Australia Jim convinced his Rotary Club that this could be done and to that end 500 tickets went on sale at $50.00 per ticket for some lucky person to win a Toyota Yaris, sponsored by Maitland and Port Stephens Toyota to the value of $13,000.00. The prizewinner had two options – one to take the car with 12 months NSW rego, 3 years warranty

and first six capped price services with the second option being the $13,000.00 cash. So when Warren pressed the button, the number 361 was displayed and after checking ticket butts and database, it was revealed that local Neil Halley was the lucky winner. Congratulations Neil!
In addition to the above announcement, Rotary presented a cheque to the value of $1000.00 to Steve Howell from the Surf Club. Once again, it has to be said that our local community is full of generosity and energy to provide well needed funds for organisations.

WATERSIDE PROJECT: Council volunteer, Mr Peter Brooker takes a break on Mr Buckle’s chair.
Old sandstone seat preserved
GREAT Lakes Council’s recent upgrade to the Forster waterside along Little Street has vastly improved the area and opened up the foreshore for public enjoyment - and unearthed a forgotten piece of Forster’s history. Earlier this year, Council asked the community to comment on plans to beautify Memorial Drive, provide more green space and a cycleway / pedestrian path to link with existing paths each side of Memorial Drive. “Council received grant
funding from the NSW Government to improve cycle facilities in the Forster - Tuncurry area. The grant is allowing Council to complete missing sections of the cycleway network and provide facilities that allow cycling to be a realistic option when accessing the shopping precinct” said Council’s Director of Engineering Services, Mr Ron Hartley. Some years ago a Council volunteer, Mr Peter Brooker found an old sandstone seat covered in
leaf and people litter. The seat has an inscription that reads “erected by residents, visitors and friends of the late Thomas Buckle Esq. in appreciation of his public services to Forster and District 1939”. Peter contacted Council to request permission to keep the seat and the area around it free of rubbish and leaf litter. What was once a dark, unappealing space now provides a lovely place to sit on Mr Buckle’s chair and admire the views across the lake.
Drug raid operation
BOOKED: Ray Harrison and Brian Oakley from last year’s book sale..
THE first of Rotary’s 2016 biannual book sales is well prepared for the fantastic support from our local Community and the influx of holiday visitors. To be held at the Hawks Nest Community Hall on Thursday 7th and Friday 8th January, the sale will include the usual wide selection of hard covers, paper backs and magazines. Apart from the novels, there are separate categories of biographies, sport, gardening, cooking, large coffee table books and many more. The old fashioned Vinyl records are coming back into vogue and there will be a small selection available, alongside the CDs and DVDs.
Thanks to the generosity of our local Community in donating books each year to the sale, and to the hard work sorting the offerings by a dedicated team of Rotarians, the event promises to be a literary treasure-trove. Each year the members of the HN/TG Surf Lifesaving Club provide a valuable contribution in helping cart the boxes of books from the storeroom to the Community Hall for which the Rotarians and their aging backs thank them. Come along and you never know what gems you might pick up and in the process support your local Rotary Club that in turn supports your local Community.
$6.5M in cannabis has been seized after ‘Program’
MORE than 3,300 cannabis plants, with an estimated potential street value in excess of $6.5 million, have been seized throughout the Mid North Coast and Manning Great Lakes Local Area Commands over the course of the last week. From Monday 7 December through to Thursday 10 December, police from the State Crime Command’s Drug Squad joined the Police Air Wing, PolAir, and local officers in raiding illegal crop sites as part of the Cannabis Eradication Program (CEP). A total of 3,331 cannabis plants, with an
estimated potential street value of $6.6 million, were seized. The CEP has been running since the mid 1980s and, to date, has prevented cannabis with an estimated potential street value of more than $300 million from reaching NSW streets. The program is generally operational during cannabis-growing season, which stretches from the late spring through summer and into early autumn. Further rounds of the CEP will take place in other parts of NSW during the coming months.

Spring mixed tennis winners TENNIS
Bulahdelah Tennis Club
By Meredyth RAE LAST Thursday night Bulahdelah Tennis club enjoyed its end of year sausage sizzle, presentation and social tennis. Just prior to cooking the sausages a storm hit the town, sending all inside and saturating the courts! Thankfully, it was short-lived and by the time dinner was enjoyed, the presentations made and the AGM conducted, the courts were dry enough for
a few sets of tennis. Prizes were awarded for club Championships, held earlier in the year, and to the winners of the Spring mixed competition – Greg Krick, David Schlenert, Jilesh James and Rosie Newton, who defeated Ken Woodward, Trudy Graham, Fay Morgan and Brandon Watt. This was Jilesh’s third comp in a row where he has been part of the winning team! The Spring competition was unusual in that all grades were combined, therefore allowing the younger players an opportunity to play against our best players, which is a

BOWLS Tea Gardens Men’s Bowls By The JAFFA
DECEMBER 7: The Club Presentation Night is always one of the highlights of the bowling year and this time it was no exception when all the who’s –who in the Tea Gardens Country Club Bowling Club, both Men and Women attended along with representatives from our major sponsors, Pelican Pest Control and our favourite charity the Westpac Helicopter. This year the organisers went for a less formal evening with fewer speeches and more fun and frivolity.
great way of improving their game. There will be social tennis every Tuesday night at 7pm throughout the summer break. Membership is not required to come and play social tennis. All are welcome to come and enjoy some tennis for only $4 per night. Names are also being called for to play in the next mixed night competitions which will begin mid-February 2016. To add your name to the list for the next competition or for any information about social tennis, coaching or court hire, please contact Meredyth on 0401 014146.
The Club’s auditorium was used instead of the Restaurant area and it was most effective, easily accounting for the 90 or so in attendance. The evening was hosted by the President of the Men’s Bowling Club, Keith Smith and the President of the Women’s Bowling Club Sandra Leisemann. The highlight of the evening was the presentation of the Clubman of the Year award to Barry Goode. A very popular choice. Well done Barry. Thoroughly deserved! Particular congratulations to the ladies of the Women’s Bowling Club for their outstanding organising and the exceptional catering. Amazing! Who knows, next year we might roll out the red carpet, do some interviews for Channel 9 and feature some frocks. Food for thought! December 9: A pleasing field of 50 bowlers turned out for the usual Wednesday Nominated Triples competition today. Early showers took the grass green out of play and the organisers arranged 4 rinks of Fours play and 3 rinks of triples. The remainder of the day was steamy and so was the play with the winning team scoring a red-hot +62 points to win the day. Must be some sort of a record! The team of Bill Bridges, Andy Barker, (The Entrance BC), Geoff Burgess, (a former member now residing in Maryborough), and Ian Baker, flogged their opponents in their first game 21-2 and then repeated the dose in the second winning, 28-4. Ouch! Runners-up on a hard-fought +28 were the team of John Slater, Bob Skewes and Kevin Williams.
MyallCoastNews.com.au
ON 9 December, Twilight barefoot bowls saw 18 players turn out for a game and the chance to win a few prawns in the raffle. A good time was had by all and the winners on the evening were Kathy Guerin, Wendy Grainger and Ken Southern. With a +18. Runners up Guy Rowe, Nathan Marks and Grant Bidgood with + 16. December 12, Saturday jackpot bowls, had 20 players on the day. Doug Johnson and Bo Taylor won on the day with +27. They also won the $300 Jackpot when the Number 27 was drawn (whinge and win Taylor is at it again). Runners up were Richard Laughton, Freda Laughton and skip Ken Towers with +8. Jackpot bowls will be on this weekend 19/12/15 but will not be played on 26/12/15.
Email your Sport Results: news@mcnota.com.au December 11: I will never forget Friday December 11. The lure of easy money drew a field of 28 bowling hard-heads to contest the final Friday Jackpot Pairs event for the year. It was stinking hot and the hot wind reminded me what it must be like to play bowls with the devil. My car thermometer registered 41 degrees! However, everyone survived and lived to divvy-up the two jackpots on offer. There were two teams with a winning margin of +3. They shared the first jackpot of $200.00. They were Harry Hauben and Doug Naylor and Mark Nightingale and Pat Barwick Two teams also finished on +11 and they shared the second jackpot of $140.00. They were Ken McKeown and Ron Webster and John Slater and Bob Weir. EntriesclosefortheClubFoursChampionship on Monday 4th January 2016. So far only 7 teams have entered. Get cracking. Time is fast running out. The first round commences on Saturday 9th January. During the year the Tea Gardens Country Club Bowling Club has received wonderful coverage for our sport from our local newspaper, the Myall Coast News. A big THANK YOU to the team for a great year it is much appreciated. A Happy Christmas and an even better New Year .to all.

MONDAY 7 December: Sandra Leisemann, President of our Women’s Bowling Club, and Keith Smith, President of the Men’s Bowling Club were the hosts for our Annual Combined Presentation Night. Members and invited guests gathered in the Auditorium for pre- dinner drinks and nibbles. Once again praise must go to all the Executive Committee and Social Committee and all the others who went in to the Club earlier in the day to prepare the tables and the wonderful meal of cold meats and salads with yummy desserts to follow. The stage was set and all we had to do was sit back relax and enjoy a happy and friendly
festive evening. After the meal the official section of our evening began. Both Sandra and Keith gave a welcome to our sponsors and other invited guests. Presentations were made to all winners and runners up in all categories of competitions held throughout the year. The categories in the Women’s Club were, Fours, Triples, Pairs, Annis Young Consistency, Open Consistency, Novice Consistency, Minor Singles and Major Singles. Two of our new members managed to secure an award, Winner of the Novice Consistency was Karen McPhie. Well done Karen! Our other fairly new member was Pam Gilchrist who was runner-up in the Minor Singles. Well played Pam! CONTINUED Page 10
