IT’S OUR SAY News Of The Area hit the streets to find out what you think about Great Lakes Council possible merger

By Daniel SAHYOUN

A SERIES of public meetings will be held over the proposed merger of Great Lakes, Taree and Gloucester Councils which is officially back on the table. The proposal made by

Gloucester Shire, was a surprise to Great Lakes Council having been deemed fit to continue as a standalone council by the State Government. With no business case developed for the proposed three way merger, Great

Lakes Deputy Mayor Len Roberts, said Council was not in a position to comment on the proposed amalgamation. “Without a business case, we cannot form an official opinion,” he said. “Council will hear from the

Local Government’s delegate next week and will then discuss its position and approach for keeping residents informed.” Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal (IPART) reported in October 2015 that Great Lakes Council had

undertaken a business case for a merge with Gloucester Shire but “found that a merger would have a significant negative impact on Great Lakes Council.” CONTINUED Page 9,10,11

work for the National Party MP ensuring local issues are heard a priority. “I’m getting around and meeting people to hear their issues so I can take them on board and present them in Canberra,” Dr Gillespie

our part of the world.” Representing the Myall Coast area for just over two weeks, Dr Gillespie has been getting to know the local issues. “I’ve had briefings with Bob Baldwin so I know the issues of the

area, television reception being one of them,” he said. Although Dr Gillespie’s first term in Parliament, he said his background in medicine and business have prepared him well for issues concerning the Myall Coast. “I’ve cared for people who rely on the health system through my 33 years work as a doctor, so I understand the importance of health, especially aged care which is extremely important in this part of the world.” “Having run a small business, I get what’s it’s like for a small businessman and I love delivering long lasting infrastructure, that’s why I am so pleased to see the Pacific Highway completed.” With Lyne covering an area of over 16 000 square kilometres, Dr Gillespie said his biggest challenge of the new electorate will be distance. “I’m used to looking after large areas and doing lots of kilometres in the car,” he said. “Luckily we have a great highway running right through the middle, so it makes getting around easy.” Dr Gillespie will be visiting the Tea Gardens/Hawks Nest area very soon with regular visits planned for the Myall Coast region over the coming months. For now, Dr Gillespie is looking forward to enjoying everything his new electorate has to offer. “I’ve enjoyed some Karuah Oysters, I haven’t tried the Bulahdelah Award Winning Sausages yet, but I’m looking forward it.”

FREE MATINEE “Johnny Noble” SAFETY: Nick Green, CEO of Cycling Australia pleased about the Great Lakes launch.

commissioned by Cycling Australia revealed that despite 95% of Australian parents agreeing that it is important their child can ride a bike safely, one in two Aussie parents intend to spend less than 15 hours teaching their children how to ride a bike. Let’s Ride will teach 8-12 year old, Great Lakes children about bike control, bike safety and situational awareness all in a fun and relaxed environment

– helping to give parents peace of mind. It’s hoped the program will be expanded across the Great Lakes as schools are encouraged to sign up to host the six week course. The Great Lakes Let’s Ride facilitator, Paul Nixon said, “Learning how to ride a bike is a big part of every Australian’s childhood. The findings of today’s survey really highlight why more time needs to be spent

teaching our children how to ride safely.” “Each program, run by Cycling Australia qualified instructors, is a six week course held in schools and other community settings. Families and participants also receive a progression tracker and athome skills and worksheets to continue the learning at home,” he said. For more information visit letsride.com.au

TEA Gardens Public School was one of four Hunter schools who made “above average gains” in their recent NAPLAN results. Mark Clemson, Tea Gardens Primary School Principal has pointed to teacher development and personalised programs as factors that contributed to their improved academic performance. “I am very proud of both our students and our staff here at Tea Gardens,” Mr Clemson told News

Of The Area reporter Rebekka Cunningham These results have demonstrated an improvement in learning from the last lot of testings between from when the students were in Year 3 to when they were in Year 5 towards the end of last year. “For us, it’s looking at what we have been focusing on as part of our school planning, which is excellence in student learning – looking a lot at our teachers and leaders and how they have been learning and making sure that

they are lifelong learners.” “It’s important for us to build that learning through ongoing programs that we put into place, such as Early Numeracy or the Reading and Recovery which support foundations for learning for our students.” Mr Clemson couldn’t comment on why Tea Gardens shone above other schools, but what he did say is that, “All kids are different and all schools are different.” “Our results have shown success in what we have done, and what we have done works best for

us, but may not work for others.” “We are confident that we can continue delivering these results, because that’s our jobs and that’s what we are passionate about and dedicated to.” The other three Hunter schools ACARA identified are Hamilton North Public, Hunter Valley Grammar at Ashtonfield and St James’ Primary at Muswellbrook. Each school was mentioned for their gain compared with previous years; schools with similar students; and other students at similar NAPLAN start points.

As of 2 November 2015, the Conveyancing Amendment (Sunset Clauses) Act 2015 (NSW) came into force and applies to off-theplan contracts for sale of residential lots and restricts a developer from automatically rescinding an off-theplan contract under a sunset date clause. The government had expressed concern that developers were intentionally delaying the registration of plans past the sunset dates provided for in contracts, with the result that they could rescind and resell at higher prices in rising markets. Under the Act, the activation of a sunset clause does not automatically allow the developer to rescind an off-the-plan contract. If a developer wants to rescind, they must give the purchaser 28 days’ written notice of

Part 1 (part 2 next week)

the proposed rescission detailing why the developer wants to rescind and the reason for the delay in creating the subject lot. Prior to the new legislation, the onus was on the purchaser to prove that the developer’s delay in registering the plan was unreasonable. The effect of the Act has been to reverse the onus, requiring the developer to explain the delay. The Act further provides that rescission may only take place if each purchaser under the contract consents in writing to the proposed rescission or the developer obtains a court order permitting the proposed rescission. The first decision under the new Act has recently been handed down by the Courts and will be discussed in next week’s article.

THERE will be a new cycling program for children launching in the Great Lakes this autumn after a Cycling Australia report revealed that parents spend 50% less time teaching safety on two wheels verses time in the water. The Let’s Ride program, specifically designed to teach children how to ride safely is being offered to primary schools in the Great Lakes after three in four Australian parents admitted that they think their child is more at risk on a bike today than they were 20-years ago. Cycling Australia CEO, Nick Green said, “With children receiving 50% less time when learning to ride than when learning to swim, it’s understandable that parents are concerned with the safety of their children out on their bikes.” Mr Green said, “Let’s Ride will help to educate our young people so they can enjoy being active and cycling with their friends safely – whilst giving parents peace of mind.” The new Omnipoll report

UP UP AWAY: Members of the Rotary Club of Myall Coast enjoying some great heights.

Rotary members take the Myall Coast to a new high SIXTEEN members of the Rotary Club of Myall Coast, accompanied by nine Rotary partners travelled to Mudgee last weekend to attend the Rotary District 9670 Conference. Nearly 500 Rotarians from as far west as Cobar and Bourke came together for the annual event. The Conference itinerary included business sessions,

presentations by fascinating and dynamic Guest Speakers and two days of Rotary fellowship. The group from Myall Coast made it a long weekend with the majority making the trip on the Thursday. After a barbecue on Thursday evening, ten members of the party were up before dawn on Friday to welcome the sunrise from 5,000 feet

THE Myall Community Art and Craft Centre will be opening its doors to the wider community on 26 March, Easter Saturday between 9.30am and 4.00pm. “We are very excited for this year’s event,” Neryl Grehan, Event Coordinator & Public Officer told News Of The Area. “We are expecting a great turn out.” “Entry is free to the public and there will be some great displays on by local artists, in particular some wonderful work by Allison Mills who does braiding, quilting, art and framing, just to name a few.” Many of the talented members will be on hand to demonstrate the crafts that are undertaken at the Centre.

in a hot air balloon over Mudgee. Visits by hired bus to several wineries and the Honey Haven, with lunch at an Italian Trattoria at one of the wineries, filled in Friday to everyone’s culinary and imbibers satisfaction. Mudgee has some wonderful restaurants and the Rotarians found the best.

Everyone will tell you what fun they have creating! One of the most satisfying aspects of joining the Myall Community Art and Craft Centre is that you will very much enjoy the company you will be keeping as well as the pieces you will create. The Open Day is one of only three major events held at the Centre so make a date and come along.

The Annual Open Day aims to encourage new members to come along and join one of the many classes on offer. These classes include Spinning, Embroidery, Patchwork, Quilting, Soft Crafts, Art, Folk Art, Sculpting, Pottery, Lead Lighting, Leather Work, Print Making, American Braided Rug Making, Mosaics, Woodwork, Wood Turning and Picture Framing. You can find the centre behind the Council Offices across from the swimming pool. There is also a great shop overflowing with creative pieces and there is always someone on duty in the shop to help you with any further q ARTS AND CRAFT: Judy Stevenson information you may need. and Bron Bellchamber.

The conference guest speaker included former Newcastle Knights footballer, Mark Hughes. Mark came down with a brain tumour which cut short his football career. He has fought the cancer and at this stage is on top of the disease. He talked about his medical fight and the Mark Hughes Cancer

Research Foundation that he has established specifically to fund research into brain cancer. His story was inspiring. “One of the important aspects of being a Rotarian is to enjoy the benefits of friendly and fun fellowship. Everyone who attended the Conference certainly had both in plenty.”

Fluke meeting By Rebekka CUNNINGHAM

AFTER 50 years apart, Sue Roberts, wife of Pastor Len Roberts, had a fluke encounter with her sixth-grade teacher, Jack Hill. The pair coincidentally ran into one another several weeks ago at Ukulele lessons which are held at the Baptist Church. “I joined Ukele lessons at the Baptist Church for a bit of fun and enjoyment,” Jack told News Of The Area reporter Rebekka Cunningham. “Adding to my enjoyment was the discovery that a fellow student, Susan Roberts, who was in a class I taught at Lalor Park Public School in 1967, was now in my Ukulele lessons.” “It took a while for me to realise the connection but it became clear that Susan was one of 40 students in my 6A class 49 years ago.”

“It has been fun to reminisce with Susan after all these years.” “How appropriate it is that we have met again in a new learning environment.” The Ukulele group, now named the FLUKERS (an acrostic encompassing Fun Loving Uke Strummers, a name that was suggested by an 11 year old daughter of a woman who attends), now consisting of about 27 members and still growing, continues to meet each Tuesday afternoon from 2pm at the Baptist Church until 22 March. Fun level and joy certainly increased for Sue Roberts when she recently re-connected with someone who recognized her within the group despite a 50 year gap, namely her sixth-grade teacher at Lalor Park, namely Mr Jack Hill, now retired with his wife in Tea Gardens.

All groups ready to celebrate Seniors Week

MYALL Coast Entertainers have been asked to organise entertainment from 10 am to 3.30pm on Saturday 9 April at the Hawks Nest Village Square. We needed to look no further than our own backyard and surrounding area to find entertainers to showcase and highlight our wonderful talent,” said Allan Wilson, President the Myall Coast Entertainers. Mr Wilson said that as part of the Grey and Thespian Mardi Gras, organised by the local Progress Association and the Chamber of Commerce and Tourism to celebrate Seniors Week, this should be a fabulous fun day with something for everyone. Allan said, “We will be have the Outcasts, Scottish pipes and drums group start proceedings at 9.30am

from the carpark where the stalls will be set up, marching around the shops on the footpath and then to the Village Square, where the rest of the entertainment will begin.” At 10am the local new band in town ‘Sage’ will play popular music from the 1940s to the 1960s to start the party. According to Allan, Sage is also a medicinal herb, which ancient Egyptians used as a fertility drug, although nothing to do with this great band. Local Bush Poet, Bob Bush (yes that’s his real name) and friends will also entertain us with their poetry and story telling. Then follows Peter James, who has over 30 years experience leading his own rock and country bands. Peter is a solo artist and vocalist and loves playing rock, country, ballads

and folk from the 60s to the 90s. Old Bones Ukulele group will be strutting their stuff playing Bluegrass, Blues, Country and Western, and Gospel through to old time favourites. They will be followed by Instep Country Line dancers, who will surely put a smile on your face with their snappy steps. Myall Coast Entertainers will be presenting a comedy radio play called, The Good Old Days, which will be followed by the U3A choir doing their thing. At 2pm well known local Leon Bobako and friends, will then take stage for a lively musical treat which will include rocknroll for all of us to dance (jive) to, and finishing up at 3.30 in the afternoon. Truly a great day’s entertainment.

Concern for bus safety

PARENTS from the Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest area have invited Member for Port Stephens Kate Washington to meet with them and voice their concerns about school bus safety. Parents have outlined their concerns about their children travelling to school along the Pacific Highway at 100km/h with no seat belts, seating three to a seat and with some students standing up. Some have recalled recent experiences where the bus has stopped at weigh-in stations and students have been asked to move from one side to the other to ensure the weight is level. A 2012 Parliamentary enquiry recommended the banning of students standing on high speed school buses by mid 2013. The Government instead chose to implement this by 2023. The installation of seat belts for

school buses was also recommended by this committee however this is also not due for completion until 2023. Ms Washington said, “Parents want to know that their children are safe as they go to and from school.” “I have called on the Government to give parents a timeframe for when school buses in the Port Stephens region will be required to have seat belts, but I am still waiting for an answer,” Ms Washington told News Of The Area. Samantha Leggatt from Tea Gardens said, “Our main concern is the safety of our children travelling down high speed roads without seat belts or standing in the aisle.” “It is absurd. What will it take for the government to act? Ideally we’d like to see seat belts on all school buses,” said Ms Leggart.

The Grey and Thespian Mardi Gras started with the idea to share a cuppa and cake to mark Senior’s Week. It’s now grown into a threeday celebration and extravaganza of entertainment and activities. It is organised and presented by the Hawks Nest / Tea Gardens Progress Association, Hawks Nest Golf Club, Myall Coast Chamber of Commerce and Tourism, Myall Coast Entertainers, Myall U3A, and a host of tireless volunteers. Consultation for aquaculture DA

In an effort to help the starter THIS year St Joseph’s Bulahdelah Primary School has started an ‘Early Bird Programme’ for children who may or may not be ready for school in 2017. It is a free service and a full school day experience with the children being in their own class with their own class teacher and teacher assistant. School Principal Joanne Trotter told News Of The Area, “We see this as a whole community project which involves all of the local community.” “This year we have children coming from Hawks Nest, Tea Gardens, Girvan, Coolongolook as well as Bulahdelah,” Ms Trotter said. One of the hardest decisions a parent can make is to know whether or not to send their child to school. We all want what is best for our children and we want to give them the best start

A REQUEST by NSW Department of Primary Industries and Huon to modify two development approvals for a water-based finfish research facility and commercial aquaculture farm in Providence Bay, offshore from Hawks Nest is on exhibition for community feedback. The Department of Planning and Environment is keen to hear the community’s views on the proposals which seek to: • relocate the two approved aquaculture leases further offshore into deeper water (from approximately three and a half kilometres offshore to up to nine kilometres offshore) • increase the size of fish cages from 80-120 metres in circumference to 168 metres at each of the two leases • increase the number of cages from between eight and ten to 12 cages at each of the two leases • increase the size of the development from 20 to 30 hectares to 62 hectares at each of the two leases • install permanent feed barges at each site • increase the total production of fish from 1,996 tonnes to 2,400 tonnes. A spokesperson for the Department of Planning and Environment said the local community always has an opportunity to share their views. “Community consultation is an integral part of the planning process and the applicants will have to respond to the feedback we receive,” the spokesperson said. “This feedback is taken into consideration

Teens focus on Earth

By Daniel SAHYOUN

q EARTH HOUR: Jordan Schmidt, Milly Follet, Olivia Bartley and Cori-Lee Schmidt prepare for Earth Hour.

A GROUP of environmentally conscious Myall Coast teenagers are preparing to participate in Earth Hour on Saturday night. This global climate change campaign sees people all over the world turn their lights off for an hour in support of a sustainable future. Pindimar local Jordan Schmidt, is a firm environmental supporter believing all people have a responsibility to care for the earth. “It’s a beautiful place and it’s getting destroyed, we need to be switching to smarter energy sources,” she said. “Turning lights off, using energy saving globes and turning off electrical appliances when not in use are all simple things we can do.” Good friend Milly Follet from Carrington shares Jordan’s views. “If we destroy the environment, we won’t have a future, even simple things like carpooling will minimise gases going into

the atmosphere,” she said. “Using paper bags instead of plastic is another simple thing that everyone can do to help reduce, reuse and recycle to conserve our natural resources.” Earth Hour, started in Sydney in 2007, has now become a global sustainability movement with more than 50 million people participating in the campaign each year. Supporting energy reduction, Great Lakes Council provides free access to power usage meters. These handheld devices calculate how much appliances cost to run, including those in standby mode. By making simple lifestyle changes, residents can potentially reduce their electricity bills and save tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions. Power metres and Energy Reduction kits can be borrowed from Tea Gardens Library. Jordan and Milly encourage everyone to participate in Earth Hour which occurs this Saturday 19 March at 8.30pm.

Merger Chessboard

By Cr Len ROBERTS Deputy Mayor, Greal Lakes Council DESPITE being found fit for the future and able to stand alone, Great Lakes Council has been placed in a 3 way merger proposal with Greater Taree and Gloucester Councils. The proposal has arisen as a tactical move by Gloucester to avoid merging with Dungog Council. As soon as the proposal was

received by government, the government initiated a proposal between Maitland and Dungog because if the Gloucester proposal was successful, Dungog would be left hanging. This prompted Port Stephens Council to initiate a merger with Dungog to avoid merging with Newcastle. It is now likely the government will resurrect the Newcastle - Lake Macquarie proposal. This confusing scenario is somewhat akin to the intricate chess manoeuvres being

Update on the Port Stephens Newcastle join

played by amateurs not fully understanding the implications and end result. The ramifications for our ratepayers are that particular rules now come into play about expenditure and new works. Basically we can only spend strictly in accordance with the budget and undertake existing works. Dr Ian Tiley has been appointed as the delegate to investigate the proposal and is obligated to hold public meetings. He has chosen the following times and places within Great Lakes: 5 April: 9am to 1pm at Club Forster and 3pm -5pm Bulahdelah Bowling Club. Council has no input in the conducting of the public meetings. Members of the public including councillors who would like to attend must register first using the online registration form at www.councilboundaryreview. nsw.gov.au or phoning 1300 813 020 and indicating if you wish to speak. You can also make a submission on line. If the merger is successful it will mean that we would be part of the largest council on the east coast of NSW and would extend from the Karuah River in the South to Johns River in the north

and Nowendoc in the North West. The government intends to announce the successful mergers by 30 June. All Councillors will be dismissed unless the Minister specifically nominates particular ones to remain. Dr Tiley can only take submissions on the proposal in accordance with the following 11 factors: • financial advantages and disadvantages, • community of interest and geographical cohesion • Existing and traditional values • Attitude of residents towards the proposal • Manner and number of elected representation • Impact on council ability to provide services • Impact of employment on staff • Impact on rural communities • Whether there should be wards • Need to ensure the opinions of diverse areas are effectively represented • Factorsrelevanttoefficientand effective local government There is no point in just saying leave us alone, we are fit. The government already knows that. We need to express our opinions through submissions. I urge you to have your say; otherwise, we may miss out on the representation and services we deserve.

While Great Lakes was shown to be sustainably “Fit for the Future,” the independent IPART report showed Gloucester and Taree Councils did not reach the mark, failing to satisfy the criteria for financial sustainability. Under the proposal, Great Lakes would join forces with the two “Unfit” shires forming a larger regional council with a combined population of 90 000 people, responsible for 3590 km of roads and 487 bridges. With the number of councils in NSW being reduced from 152 down to 109 as a result of proposed mergers, Minister for Local Government Mr Paul Toole, said the aim of the program was building stronger communities. “We need our councils to be strong and modern, so they can deliver more infrastructure, better service and have secure economic futures for

ratepayers,” Mr Toole said. The task of examining the proposal has been delegated to Dr Ian Tiley who is required to hold a public inquiry under the Local Government Act. A spokesperson for Dr Tiley said, “Public inquiries provide members of the public with an opportunity to express their views on the proposal to Dr Tiley. Members of the public can attend all sessions, but may only speak once at each inquiry.” A public meeting will be held at Bulahdelah Bowling Club on Tuesday 5 April at 3pm with further meetings occurring in Forster, Taree and Gloucester. Registration for the public meetings can be made on the Council Boundary Review website or by phoning 1300 813 020. IT makes sense that when the majority of a community are against something that their voices and concerns are heard loud and clear. When NSW Premier Mike Baird announced in December that a forced merger between Newcastle and Port Stephens Councils would occur it didn’t sit particularly well with both councils, and especially with residents of Port Stephens who have been very vocal in their disapproval of the forced merger. Member for Port Stephens Kate Washington has heard the message of disapproval from her constituents, and will be addressing NSW Parliament on Wednesday 23 March after lodging a petition with 14,000 signatures against the merger. The debate regarding this petition is due to commence at approximately 4.30pm. Speaking with News Of The Area, Ms Washington said, “I invite all Port Stephens residents to attend this Parliamentary

Dear News Of The Area,

Dear News Of The Area,

Dear News Of The Area,

Under the Local Government Act the Minister for Local Government has referred the submission to the Chief Executive of the Office of Local Government for examination and report back to the Minister. I encourage members of the public to make written submissions commenting on the proposal before Friday 15 April. There are also a series of public meetings in early April and I also encourage everyone to go along and everyone have their say. I want to hear what people have to say and I will take their views to the Minister so he knows the attitude of residents in Myall Lakes to the Gloucester Council proposal.

I don’t think I would be in favour of the merge. Great Lakes Council is in a much better financial position than some other council’s. A merge would have a negative impact on our local government area.

It sounds like a good idea and we should think positively. There will be more available funding for local projects.

Brian Ede, Wootton

Stephen Bromhead MP State Member for Myall Lakes

Mark Smythe, Bulahdelah

Dear News Of The Area,

Dear News Of The Area,

Great Lakes Council is over stressed with its own workload. Adding other councils will make it more difficult to carry out projects such as construction as they may be under resourced.

I don’t think the merge of the councils is a good idea. There would be too much area to cover and too many individual towns to look after.

Dear News Of The Area, It’s ok with us. Kath Winterbottom, Tea Gardens

the Port Stephens shire. The area should include the Lakes from Bungwahl—Tea Gardens/ Hawk Nest. That was on the agenda approximately ten years ago and was fiercely opposed by the then Mayor Mr. Chadban who won the day. Under the current suggestion, I would not support such an amalgamation should Port Stephens amalgamate with Newcastle—That move would be a disaster for us, however if Port Stephens remains alone, such a take-over could be revisited. I personally would not like to see Great Lakes be forced to amalgamate with Gloucester and Taree. Both of those councils are struggling and the proposed amalgamation would seem to be a cynical attempt to attach to a financially successful shire such as Great Lakes. We here in Tea Gardens are now beginning to reap a recognition which seems a long time in coming. Any of these proposed changes will reflect badly for us. We have to remember that with a population of only 4000, we currently represent 10% of the Great Lakes Shire. Such an amalgamation will reduce us to less than 5%.

Dear News Of The Area, Generally we feel that a merge with Port Stephens would be more appropriate providing that the Mayor and his supporting Councillors were removed from office. The Northern Boundary needs to be the Lakes Way, with North of it merging with Taree, Reasons are as follows: a) Waterways/foreshores would be under the same Council. b) Commercial advantage, that both areas rely heavily on Tourism and would complement each other. c) Demographics needs are similar. d) Financial viability of both councils would be strengthened.

Great Lakes council cannot cover the area they service as it is, there will be less done for its ratepayers unless they employ more staff in all areas. Not a good outcome. Cheryl Milburn, Hawks Nest

I’m fine with the merger. I’ve looked at the other councils and I think Great Lakes is better off joining with the nearby councils as it will be better for the area.

Tanya Locke, Bulahdelah Dear News Of The Area, If Great Lakes Council as a “Fit For The Future” Council remains standalone, Councillors and Council staff would all retain their positions and salaries and allowances as well as the election structure such as no Wards and Mayor elected by Councillors. We need far more information before making any judgement on the merger.

Nicky Hammerl, Bulahdelah David Mort, Bulahdelah Dear News Of The Area, It will be a great idea as there are too many councils. It will be great to balance the demographic and evenly distribute resources making it more efficient for the area.

Peter Economos, Pindimar Dear News Of The Area,

Dear News Of The Area,

Dear News Of The Area, I think that Australians are too over-governed and the fewer bureaucratic entities managing us the better. If there are real savings to be achieved that would allow a decrease in rates and improved efficiencies then I’m all for it. There are far too many bureaucrats on enormous salaries and far too much red tape blocking development and good governance.

Gordon Grainger, Tea Gardens Dear News Of The Area, I think the merge would be a great idea. It will allow councils to work together to provide better services for the community. It would also make communities more pleasant by bringing them together.

Judy Dixon, Bulahdelah Dear News Of The Area, It’s difficult enough to get action on Tea Gardens requirements at present. I reckon it would be even worse if we merged! Jo Younghusband, Tea Gardens

A very rewarding decision for all concerned. So why the need to once again go over a similar proposal with a wider consolidation? Why should GLC have to once again spend funds, not budgeted for, to oppose/identify difficulties of such a merger? I certainly do not support an attempt by the NSW government to place an addition burden on GLC staff by seeking to add extra workloads and costs that would need to be borne by the current ratepayers of GLC. Dear News Of The Area,

The less councils the better. We are overgoverned as it is.

The bigger the organisation, the less effective it is for the local people. If the councils do decide to merge, I feel that our local voice will be lost, particularly in Bulahdelah.

works? These works aren’t completed because of the lack of money. So without any relief package from the government, how can any type of merger benefit the rate payer?

I’d like to see the finances of all the councils involved and the situation of how they are sitting financially at the moment. I would also like to see how the government intends to fund the merge. I cannot make a comment either way without knowing the financial situation.

Dear News Of The Area,

Dear News Of The Area, Jack Ireland OAM, Bulahdelah Dear News Of The Area,

Arthur Baker OAM, Bulahdelah Dear News Of The Area,

Dear News Of The Area, The members of the Myall Coast Chamber of Commerce and Tourism Inc are largely against the proposed merger between Great Lakes, Greater Taree and Gloucester Councils. Without a detailed business case, there does not appear to be any real benefit to Great Lakes residents or businesses. The creation of such a ‘super Council’ would be out of character with surrounding LGA’s. It would also leave Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest with a significantly reduced regional significance and struggling for representation and resources within the larger LGA.

We did a survey year’s ago to find out what we wanted from our council if they were to stand alone. Great Lakes were told they could stand alone without having to merge. We pay high rates and I think that’s why our Council is in a good financial position. I can’t see that it’s going to be much benefit to us and I think we would struggle and could become neglected.

While it’s understandable that a change is necessary to reduce overall costs, what position does that put Tea Gardens in? Since we are the little fish in a big ocean will our rate money be spent here? Or will our needs be put aside due to areas with a larger population therefore a greater need?

Thursday, 17 March, 2016

Fiona Mobbs, Tea Gardens

The merge of the councils really doesn’t interest me. I’m not really into politics. My husband is. I just want what’s best for everyone involved.

Kate Washington MP State Member for Port Stephens Dear News Of The Area, I would be in favour of 3 way mergers of Councils. The reason is simple economics. At present Councils only raise enough money from Rates to pay their staff & run their offices. They then need Grants/handouts in order to complete the basic tasks that Councils are required to achieve. Therefore if three Councils merged, 2 Administrations were removed, then Council would have funds for community tasks.

Thora Ireland, Bulahdelah Dear News Of The Area,

Dear News Of The Area,

Dear News Of The Area,

Mark McCormick, President Myall Coast Chamber of Commerce and Tourism Inc

The amalgamation of the councils is not a good idea. Great Lakes have demonstrated that it is fit on all criteria and would be lumbered with two underperforming councils. The result would be a deterioration of council services in all three merged local government areas. I believe that Great Lakes Council should be left as a standalone unit. This would be the best outcome for this area.

John Sahyoun, President, Bulahdelah Chamber of Commerce and Tourism

Irene Worth, Bulahdelah

The Baird government’s forced amalgamation plans for local councils is out of control. There should not be any Council amalgamations unless there is agreement between Councils and unless there is a solid business case for the amalgamation. So far, all we’ve seen from the NSW government is broken promises and unsubstantiated claims. Local Councils should remain exactly that – ‘local’.

Allan Freihaut, Bulahdelah

I don’t really know what the best way to go is. I don’t have an opinion on it at the moment. I would need to know more about it before deciding.

Michael Shultz, Markwell

Dear News Of The Area,

My initial comment to this issue is that it must be the subject of widespread community consultation by Great Lakes Council. The prospect of amalgamating with two Councils which are struggling economically is not one that Great Lakes residents should take lightly. At the very least, I believe that a truly independent consultant should be engaged to investigate the ramifications to all three Councils and their residents before further community consultation takes place.

It is not a good idea, Great Lakes Council have a big enough area to look after, without making even bigger. Alan McEntee Tea Gardens

John Blackbourn, North Arm Cove Dear News Of The Area, If it meant we have a lot more access to greater funds across the three shires it could allow a more even spread of the funds. I’m not sure if the costs will be worth it. If we lose funds in the long run, than I would be against it.

Dear News Of The Area, There will be a lot of money needed for all councils to fill in the backlog of works needed to be completed before any type of merger can be considered. How on earth can we expect a “Super Council” to function by inheriting a massive backlog of

ON SHOW: Some of the large line-up of vehicles this year.

By Phil HOARE MOTORFEST 2016 was one of the best Club Days that has been staged since the Clubs inception in 2002. Beautiful sunshine, and a record number of vehicle entries to cap of a wonderful year for the Motor Club and its members. The day commenced with some Club members arriving at 6 am to set up the stage and Club gazebos. By 7.30am the first vehicles were coming through the gates. At 10am Club President Ross Anderson welcomed and thanked those who had come to the event for their enthusiasm and support. Great Lakes Council Deputy Mayor and local resident Mr Len Roberts then opened the days proceedings. Mr Roberts spoke about the history of the event and made mention of the contribution made by Beate Seil the wife of the Clubs Vice President Juergen Seil. Under the guidance of MC Terry Munright the days official program then proceeded. Visitors wandered through the lines of vehicles and enjoyed

the BBQ food provided by the local Rural Fire Service volunteers. Visitors also enjoyed Tea and Coffee, scones and various other cakes served by the Red Cross ladies. Cold drinks were available from the Local Surf Club members. The raffle winners were drawn and announced at 1pm followed by the announcing of the various category winners for best vehicles and the peoples choice awards. The day was completed at 2pm when our President Ross Anderson officially declared the days event closed. Club members were thrilled to learn that the vehicle count was over 320 and this did not include the displays of motorcycles and speedcars and dirt track cycles. All in all a fantastic day. As well a great day for the local Community Organisations who are this years beneficiaries. The local community businesses and residents must also be praised and thanked as their support in providing the various raffle prices and buying raffle tickets contributed to the days success.

MOTORFEST: Geoff Camm inspecting under the hood.

Myall Motor Festival By Dave BRAZIER WITH the sun shining brightly and the temperature as hot as the vehicles on display, Motorfest 2016 held at Myall Oval Hawks Nest last Saturday has been hailed as a massive success. Vehicles of all sizes, ages, shapes and character filled the oval which

enticed a very healthy crowd of automobile enthusiasts and the general public alike. News Of The Area mingled amongst the crowd for a couple of hours and took in the friendly atmosphere that once again enabled Motorfest to boast that it is truly a draw card annual event for the area.

All but a trevally

Crowds were healthy all day long with parking at times difficult to find in surrounding streets, but everyone from the young to very old seem to enjoy the efforts gone to by the organisers and car displays offered. Speaking with News Of The Area, Tillegary Auto Club member Geoff Camm said, “This is fantastic. Motorfest attracts a huge variety of motoring enthusiasts to display their hard work and love for older cars, but it’s also great to see so many members of the public coming to appreciate the work that goes into keeping our automotive history alive.” “Seeing kids with their phones and cameras out taking photos and hearing them say ‘how cool is this’ is really inspiring,” he said. Hawks sign Fepuleai Pre-season Shield PLUS: First ever game for the new Ladies Hawks

LEAGUE

Tea Gardens Hawks Rugby League By Neil REYNOLDS

THE Tea Gardens Hawks started 2016 with a spirited display against last years Group 3 finalists at Wingham on Saturday. In a close match, the Tigers won by 38 points to 32. Hard work in the pre season seemed to pay off, matching fitness against a combined first and reserve grade side. For the Hawks, new signing Allan Fepuleai was intensive up front. John Schultz was a standout with power up the middle and deft off loading. Jack Beverley played a utility role, scoring tries from two positions. Nick Clarke’s return to the Hawks produced effective work

from dummy half. Back rowers Nathan Ruse and Mitchell Turvey provided a high work rate, supported by Trent Murphy. New recruit Zac Fraser was pocket dynamite, and Billy Greentree added spark to the backline. Anthony Cameron’s defense was strong. Brooke Roach was happy with the hit out, with the game producing several positional options. The Hawks will play the Shortland Devils at 2pm on Saturday 19th at Myall Park. The game is the final trial before competition kick of on Sunday April 3. The supporters Club Membership is going strongly. Contact Dakka, on 0408 434 for further details. The newly formed Lady Hawks side also travelled to Wingham to compete in their inaugural game. Going into the game with

reduced numbers, and in stifling heat, the Hawks were competitive in the early quarters. Taylah Cooke will go down in the records as scoring the team’s first try. The ladies will be better off for the game. Their first competition match will be on Sunday 3 April. The Myall River Juniors played trials on Sunday. The 8’s and 11’s travelled to Nelson Bay to produce strong performances. Coaches, Corey Bates and Nic Lagudi were happy with their respective team efforts. The 13’s and 15’s will trial next weekend before first competition games on Saturday April 2nd. The Club is still hopeful of a 6’s team. Contact 0429 845747, for details. Hair over Gurney in Singles BOWLS FROM Page 20 The Grades 4 and 6 teams at home, with Grade 3 playing at the Terrace. It was not to be a good day for the Tea Gardens sides with the Selectors having to cobble together teams due to late withdrawals. It is a matter of history now that Grade 3 lost 46-61 at Raymond Terrace, Grade 4 lost by one shot to lose 60-61 and Grade 6 lost 5571. The one shining light was the Mighty Pelican Pest Control Grade 7 side. With 6 reserve players they took on Stockton at Stockton and had a great win 64-63. Well done the Sevens! 13 March: In Sunday Introduction to Bowls today 24 players participated. The winners were Chris Stone, Pat Wilson and Lynda Richards. The Lucky losers were Ruth Radcliffe, Frank Zumbo and Karen McPhie and Beverley Thrift who shared a game.

Thursday, 17 March, 2016

Welcome to new bowlers Cliff and Ruth Radcliffe. Thanks to our Coach for the day Geoffrey Muggleton and to cooks Brian Emmett and Barry Goode. The much anticipated Final of the Minor Singles was played today with Peter Gurney challenging Mark Hair for the title. It was a very entertaining game which went to 37 ends. Mark opened up a lead from the second end and was never headed. By the 28th end he had opened up a commanding lead 25-10. The expected come-back started with Peter winning the 29th and then piling on 9 shots to be trailing by only 6 shots at the 34th end. Mark regained his composure and put the match beyond any doubt when he gained a 4 against the run of play at the 35th. A 2 on the 37th ended the match with Mark claiming the title 31-20. Congratulations to both players. Great game! Entries are now being received for the Club Major Pairs Championship which will get underway on Sunday 3 April. Closing date for entries is 24 March.

Pennant bowl roll BOWLS

Tea Gardens Men’s Bowling Club By The JAFFA

q PERPETUAL TROPHY: Best Offshore Boat winners Scott Norris, Bruce Lyall, Michael Norris with Captain Des Ward.

Inside and out for club anglers FISHING

Karuah Motor Yacht Club

By Daniel SAHYOUN

THE Karuah Motor Yacht Club’s annual Offshore and Estuary Fishing Competition was held last weekend attracting more than 30 competitors from Karuah, Maitland, Morpeth and Taree. The large competition area saw anglers take up vantage points on

the waters of Port Stephens Estuary, Broughton Island and beyond. The event had almost perfect conditions, however strong winds on Saturday provided a challenge for the anglers. CONTINUED Page 16

THE fine, hot weather continued on 9 March with a good field of 42 players turning out to contest the Wednesday Nominated Triples. For a change the scores were somewhat reasonable with the team of Vic Garlick, Bill Heylbut and Col Fossey taking out third place on +19. In second place on +24 were David Garcia, Peter (Deft Touch) Gurney and Bill Whalan. The winners on +27 were Bruce Everitt, Col Amos and David Rimmer. In Mid-week Pennants today the Pelican Pest Control Grade 4 Dolphins played away at the Wallsend Club. On a somewhat slow grass green, (it seems green-keepers are keeping a more than usual amount of grass

on greens during the hot spell), Tea Gardens lost overall by 25 shots going down 44-69. The one saving grace was a 17-17 draw achieved by the Danny Johnson four. Well done! 11 March: Friday Jackpot Pairs today attracted 12 players, including two visitors from a Queensland Palm lake Resort. Again the weather was hot with a strong North-East wind keeping temperatures bearable. The winners with the highest score on +26 were Gary Wynne and Alan Greenhalgh. They just pipped-out Peter Jones and Frank Zumbo on +25. The $100.00 jackpot was not won. 12 March: In the second round of the Newcastle District Bowling Association Saturday Pennant competition it was nearly all about Tea Gardens and Raymond Terrace. Three of our four teams played Raymond Terrace. CONTINUED Page 15
