Dredge Program to clear channel GREAT Lakes Council has announced the appointment of Neumann Dredging to conduct a program to clear the sand blocked navigational channel near the area known as the Dog Leg. The dredging program is expected to begin shortly after 1 May with the dredged sand to be used to restore the beach west of Barnes Rocks. Myall River Action Group spokesperson Mr Gordon Grainger said the group have been campaigning to complete the unfinished program of clearing the Eastern Channel for some time. “The unfinished Eastern Channel will require funding of up to $150,000 for completion and whilst

funds are being sought from Government sources, Great Lakes Council were not hopeful at this point,” Mr Grainger said. “They do point out that some responsibility remains with Port Stephens Council who have ownership to the high tide mark on the north side of Port Stephens, however Great Lakes Council are not hopeful of a favourable outcome.” Mr Grainger said Great Lakes Council were considering a land based excavation as a cheaper and temporary alternative. The Myall River Action Group have also been working in conjunction with Tea Gardens Slipway Association.

his 25 years of experience in IT, banking, finance and telecommunications. He has also worked extensively in the not-for-profitsector with schools and church groups. Mr Alley said he is passionate about what can be achieved as a community together in the seat of Lyne. “A good government has three basic cords – economy, environment and community, all working together,” Mr Alley said. “Labor consistently gets these right,” Mr Alley said he was interested in the stories of people

who are struggling with decisions made by the government. “The major parties owe it to the Australian people to fiercely contest every seat to keep the other side honest,” he said. Dr David Gillespie MP then took to the floor outlining his 33 year medical career, experience with small business and his country background raising beef cattle. Dr Gillespie said it was a great honour to represent the people of the Myall Coast Area in Canberra. “You need to get your agenda out down there and I’ve delivered in spades,” he said. “People come up to the coast to retire so health and aged care are important.”

“There was $90 million coming into Lyne for aged care when I first started and now there is more than $105 million.” Dr Gillespie said he was also concerned with capital works, long-term infrastructure and innovative programs creating jobs. Greens candidate, former mayor of Gloucester Julie Lyford was unable to attend the presentation. Although unconfirmed, Dr Gillespie said the Federal Election could take place as early as 2 July. With the candidate’s campaigns set to ramp up in the coming months, both Dr Gillespie and Mr Alley said they plan to visit the area regularly.

Dredging logic says now FROM Page 1

“We have been advocating dredging the mooring area known as the Gut, located between Slip Island and Marine Drive,” Mr Grainger said. “It seems logical to complete these tasks while a suitable dredge is on site.”

The Gut is home to a number of large vessels and has been suffering from sand inundation for a number of years. Mr Grainger said the situation has now reached the stage where boat owners can only use their craft at high tide as the vessels are resting on sand which could cause

major damage. “Council are in agreement that remedial dredging is urgently needed and is waiting on final confirmation on funding and State Government approvals,” Mr Grainger said. “They are working hard to ensure the job is completed during winter.”

Mr Grainger reported due to the Gut being a confined area, the Neumann dredge is too large and Council are sourcing a smaller dredge with expertise in the use of Geo bags. These bags will be used to dry the wet sand before transportation to storage site.

BRIAN Ede is known in Bulahdelah for his Real Estate business but for the last six years he has also been riding and training a mare in preparation for competition. The 2016 Challenge Campdraft was held at Gladstone over the Easter weekend and it was reported that it was the largest campdraft ever held on the Macleay. Approximately 1200 competitions were run over three days and required 1400 herd of cattle. The Macleay Challenge Draft evolved over 40 years ago and this year was the year that Brian Ede’s horse named Golden Spurs Acres of Diamonds won. The horse is one that Brian Ede has bred himself at Golden Spurs, Wootton and it was ridden by Wayne Murray of Bunyah

on the day of competition. In the Maiden Campdraft there were approximately 300 riders competing. Golden Spurs Acres of Diamonds won the Maiden Campdraft with a score of 91. Competitors came from the Hunter Valley in the South and as far north as the Queensland border to test themselves against the best horses and riders from Macleay. Brian Ede spoke with Myall Coast News Of The Area about the experience of having a winning horse. “Acres of Diamonds, my mare, has competed in about half a dozen maiden campdrafts before this win so she has done really well to win this maiden campdraft.” “Out of three-hundred competitors, my mare was number 24, so she held the lead for a long time. “It was an excellent effort,” Mr Ede said.

Sufficient time? PETER Alley, Country Labor candidate for Lyne has come out in opposition to the proposed merger of Gloucester, Greater Taree and Great Lakes Councils. Peter Alley said, “The fundamental financial problem faced by regional councils is that they do not have a sufficient rate base to maintain their extensive road and bridge network. This is the elephant in the room. The proposed Gloucester, Greater Taree and Great Lakes is an exercise in, wallpapering the elephant.” “Merging Gloucester, Greater Taree and Great Lakes will broaden the rate base by the same amount that their road and bridge network is broadened. The end result is zilch–zero–nada-nothing!” “No fundamental change. “Meanwhile, the local

council that we are accustomed to - will be a lot less local,” said Mr Alley. “The skimpish 6 page document provided by the Liberal-National Party NSW Local Government Minister to justify the proposed merger speaks of a potential $30m savings over 20 years – about $16.57 per person per year,” he said. “However, no information has been provided to substantiate the claim. Anyone who has been involved in mergers of medium to large organizations would be right to be skeptical of this claim.” Questions have also been raised as to whether sufficient time and sufficient consultation with the community, as required under the Local Government Act, has been complied with.

q ENQUIRY: Local Governments Delegate Dr Ian Tiley with Barbara Lyle from Tea Gardens and Pindimar residents Lesley Lane and Vee Hallinan at the Bulahdelah Enquiry.

Bulahdelah session has really left a big impression for Public Enquiry IT was standing room only at last week’s Public Enquiry concerning the proposed merger of Great Lakes, Gloucester and Taree Councils held at Bulahdelah Bowling Club. With over one hundred Myall Coast residents turning out to meet with Local Governments delegate Dr Ian Tiley, 24 speakers were registered to voice their opinions during the two hour session. All but two speakers presented arguments against the merger, expressing their preference for Great Lakes Council to stand alone. Issues raised included rate rises, negative impact on projects in the Great Lakes area and insufficient time to evaluate the longterm impact of the merger. Concerns over the costs of other councils being passed onto Great Lakes rate payers were also raised. North Arm Cove

Residents Association President Doug Kohlhoff said the merger would be less than helpful. “There has been no analysis of the costs involved and drainage and roadworks will be scrapped for Gloucester and Taree project backlogs,” he said. “With the new council, there will be a 66% loss in council attention.” Myall Coast Chamber of Commerce Vice-President Graham Halley also spoke against the proposed merger stating “local voices will be falling on deaf ears under a mega-council.” Bulahdelah Chamber of Commerce Vice-President Kevin Carter voiced his objection as “Great Lakes has a great management culture” but a merged council would “use rates for other projects, leaving us with nothing”. Two residents spoke in favour of the proposal, saying the merger would

allow for shared resources between councils. Nine Great Lakes Councillors attended the enquiry with Deputy Mayor Len Roberts presenting his views to Dr Tiley. “If this is going to happen, we need a blueprint to make it possible,” Councillor Roberts said. “We were found fit for the future, but with a merger, we will have everything taken away.” Public Enquires were also held in Forster, Taree and Gloucester. It is reported 40 people spoke in Forster with poor finances and infrastructure backlog recurring topics. The 24 speakers in Taree raised common issues of broken funding models, lack of information and loss of representation whilst there were mixed opinions from 21 speakers in Gloucester. Great Lakes had the largest turnout with almost

400 residents attending between Bulahdelah and Forster, whilst Gloucester attracted 75 attendees with 98 in Taree. Although unable to comment on the views presented, Dr Tiley said there was great community presence at Bulahdelah’s meeting showing people were very concerned. “It was at my insistence that Bulahdelah be included as a venue for the hearings,” Dr Tiley said. “And as you can see by the turnout, it was a good decision.” Dr Tiley now has the task of preparing a report on the merger for the Minister of Local Government who will make a final decision by mid-year. SEE THE RESULT: Over 250 have voted.

Young writers festival By Daniel SAHYOUN

INSPIRING the minds of the next generation of budding writers, some of Australia’s leading authors and illustrators worked with students from Tea Gardens Public School and Bulahdelah Central School last week. Held at Newcastle Regional Library as part of the Annual Writers Festival, the program offered an entertaining and educational look at children’s literature. Award-winning author Lisa Shanahan presented a lively and interactive story telling session while International award-winning illustrator Tony Flower offered tips and tricks on character drawing. Year 6 student Georgia McKillop-Davies from Hawks Nest said she

VALE to our fallen. We will never forget the ladies and men who fought for our Nation in many wars and overseas deployments, which in turn has ensured we have been able to keep and respect our way of life for current and future generations. ANZAC Day is coming, but for me, it’s not just about ‘one day.’ ANZAC Day of course is a commemoration of what occurred to our Diggers at ANZAC Cove in Turkey nearly 101 years ago.

The legend of the ANZAC should never be forgotten, along with the sacrifices so many have made for Australia since then, and having close friends who have endured battles during serviceoverseasandseeingtheir constant battles with medical issues like Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, I reflect on and respect our Diggers, both new and old, every single day. The ANZAC Spirit was alive and well at last years Anzac Day Ceremony at Karuah, where, despite adverse conditions and even a power outage due to the April storms, a strong contingent

of people attended and participated in the ANZAC Day March to the memorial behind Karuah Public School, including the towns two remaining WW2 Veterans who were chauffeured in refurbished Army Jeeps. This year will prove no different, with about 500 people expected for the March down the street for the official ceremony followed by breakfast at the Karuah RSL, and then enjoying Two-Up from 2pm until late. Shaking bucket By Daniel SAHYOUN TAKING advantage of busy holiday traffic, Bulahdelah Rural Fire Service (RFS) volunteers participated in a shake-a-bucket fundraising campaign during the weekend. RFS Deputy Captain Mr Rod Paar said locals and visitors to the area were generous with their donations. “Almost every person who has come through has donated to us, with some very generous people,” Mr Paar said. “We will be using the donated funds to purchase additional equipment for the RFS to help better protect the community.” Mr Paar, with over 30 years volunteering experience with the RFS, said the service has been a vital part of the community for many years. “The RFS has protected the community from countless bushfires and assisted with motor accidents and other emergencies around the area,” Mr Parr told News of the Area. “There is good comradery amongst our 15 active members and the skills we learn through the work are

Fun bowling, Great cause BOWLS

By Daniel SAHYOUN BULAHDELAH Bowling Club was awash with a sea of pink, raising an awareness and much needed funds for the NSW Cancer Council. The “Pink” event included a bowls competition with the competitors getting into the swing of the things by dressing in all things pink, from shirts and socks to wigs. Event coordinator Mrs Barbara Jones, said the day was held in support of the Cancer Council’s work in the battle against cancer. “This event allows us to give something back to the Cancer Council for all the support they give to people suffering from cancer,” Mrs Jones said. “All the funds from the day will go towards research, helping all patients.” The much anticipated bowls tournament

POPULAR Science Teacher at Bulahdelah Central School Miss Pamela Brewer married her long-time partner David Gollan last weekend. The outdoor ceremony took place at Redhead Reserve in Halliday’s Point and was attended by 75 of the couples closest family and friends. Having dated for many years, Pamela said David proposed 18 months ago while enjoying a day at the beach. “I was swimming and when I got out of the water he was on one knee, I didn’t even have time to dry off,” Pamela said. “I had to ask him to repeat himself as I was so shocked and excited, but of course I said yes.” The couple who enjoy travelling are now honeymooning in Adelaide. “Adelaide was on our ‘to do list’ of cities to visit in our own country and we’re ticking them off one at a time,” Pamela said. “We are only a few cities in, with Adelaide being the third major city visited together.” Following their honeymoon, the newlyweds will return home to start their married life together with their dog George and Agnes the cat. Along with their books and pens, Pamela’s students will have one more thing to remember when school resumes next term with a change of name for their teacher. “I will now be known as Mrs Gollan,” Pamela said.

Opinion

Lioness visit to Peter Sinclair Dear News Of The Area,

Deborah Bastian, Secretary Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Lioness Club q VISIT: Lioness Lois Stevens, Doreen Howell, President Vivienne Boyd and Mary Fairhall. (Front) George Mallam and Clara Brown.

Dear News Of The Area,

THE following is a letter written to Dr Ian Tiley for Council Boundary Review. The proposed forced amalgamation of Gloucester Shire Council, Great Lakes Council and Greater Taree City Council is yet another example of the NSW Government’s attempt to strongarm existing Councils and Councillors while overriding the community’s ability to have meaningful input into the future of their Council. I join my State Parliamentary colleagues in opposing these forced mergers across NSW. Mergers between Councils are at times necessary. However, they should only proceed where there is a clear need for change and have the support of the local community. The use of budgetary figures from 2013-14 to justify forced Council mergers demonstrates that the NSW Government is not interested in the current financial status of Councils or measures to improve the financial stability across Local Government. The inclusion of Councils previously assessed as exempt from amalgamation (ie “Fit”) highlights the absurdity of the NSW Government’s approach to this policy area. As the Member for Port Stephens I engage with both Port Stephens Council and Great Lakes Council on issues of concern to local residents. Great Lakes Council serves the residents of Tea Gardens, Hawks Nest, Pindimar, Bundabah and North Arm Cove in my electorate. The residents in these suburbs make up a relatively small proportion of both

Great Lakes Council and the electorate of Port Stephens. Because of this, these communities have, at times, had difficulty ensuring that adequate services are delivered to their community. The proposal to merge Great Lakes Council with Gloucester Shire Council and Greater Taree City Council will result in these communities, struggling to see adequate services delivered and a greater risk of isolation from their elected representatives in Local Government. As a geographically isolated community in a regional area these communities benefit from Council investment in amenities which support the local tourism industry. As this area will make up an increasingly smaller section of the proposed LGA, the ability of locals to advocate successfully for further investment will be diminished. The community is concerned that a number of existing projects from Great Lakes Council will be - at best - stalled and - at worst – abandoned, under this merger proposal. Great Lakes Council has made significant investment into the Hawks Nest/ Tea Gardens area in recent years and enjoys an infrastructure backlog of a modest 6%. This contrasts with infrastructure backlogs of 43% and 28% in Gloucester Shire Council and Greater Taree City Council respectively. I share the concerns of many residents in Great Lakes Council area, that if this merger occurs then the current funds and assets of Great Lakes Council, as well as future rate payments, will be used to fund infrastructure works in the

Gloucester Shire Council and Greater Taree City Council areas of the new combined Council. With unemployment and youth unemployment in regional areas continuing to grow it is a cruel measure by the NSW Government to justify this merger almost purely on the back of local people losing local jobs. Based on the government’s own assessment, only $4 million over the next 20 years is expected to be saved through this merger. This represents a saving of only $200,000 a year, or a saving of only 0.001% of the operating budget of the merged Council. However, the projected savings are to be questioned given the flawed assumptions on which it is based. Given the flimsy and unsubstantiated figures provided by the government, it is not beyond the realm the possibility that the merger creates no savings at all, especially when you consider the broader social and economic impacts of local job losses to small regional communities. This proposed merger will distance communities from their elected representatives, diminish services, increase rates and see local job losses. I stand with the residents of North Arm Cove, Tea Gardens, Hawks Nest, Pindimar, Bundabah and North Arm Cove in opposition to the proposed amalgamation. I urge you to recommend that this merger proposal be rejected. Yours Sincerely.

Dear News Of The Area,

Everybody’s on time even though it’s a 7.30am start. The Thursday Walkers are always keen to undertake an outing that combines a ferry ride, walking and eating. Not to mention laughing and chatting. Well who wouldn’t be? According to various healthy living groups, exercise, laughing and social contact are all essential components of a healthy lifestyle. And what a healthy looking group we are. We board our cruise vessel Wallamba for a delightful and thankfully uneventful crossing to Lemon Tree Passage. The onboard catering is greatly

The Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Lioness Club visited the Residents of Peter Sinclair Gardens for Easter. We enjoyed a lovely morning tea with the Residents and gave them Easter Eggs which were appreciated.

Thursday walkers appreciated by all, especially those who have not had time for their morning heart starter of choice. Disembarking we are ready to head off on a walk around the foreshore. There are new boardwalks and signs that conservation groups have been working hard to rid the area of invasive and noxious weeds. It’s a lovely walk and despite eyes up, no koala is seen. But wait! There is a koala just near the shops. For some a great photo opportunity. Another short walk and we’re ready to return. Thanks to our organizers and the crew of the Wallamba for another great day. Helen Watkins

Very good analogy Dear News Of The Area,

FIRST, let me say that 3 weeks notice is not enough time to canvas the views of all 80 Progress Association members especially when we meet on a monthly cycle, like most local community organisations.

THIS short time frame is a reflection of the inadequate time given to Great Lakes Council, compared to other Councils in NSW, to assess the Minister’s merger proposal. Secondly, those whose views I have been able to canvas are more concerned about their future representation by, and geographical connection to, a Council which could be so large as to make the areas of Hawks Nest and Tea Gardens completely insignificant. The vast majority of residents of Great Lakes Council appear to have developed a rapport with Council over the past 10 years and, even though rate increases have been pushed to the limits of many

of the fixed-income residents’ capacities, there is a sense of satisfaction displayed with Council’s ability to provide the many services it’s required to. The fundamental rating of any Council’s success is measured by its ability to manage its finances, and the predominant drain on finances is infrastructure, particularly roads and bridges. As both Greater Taree and Gloucester Councils have huge infrastructure backlogs compared with Great Lakes, it is quite apparent which Council is in control of its finances. Let me use an analogy here. If a large grocery company was considering merging its 3 supermarkets (1 in Taree, 1 in Gloucester, and 1 in Great Lakes), it would assess the performance of each store. Given that each store sells the same goods and services (as Councils do), and it’s apparent that the stores in Taree and Gloucester are running at a loss whilst the store in Great Lakes is performing well, then it’s obvious which store’s management team would be appointed to rescue the struggling stores.

Yes, the Great Lakes team. However, the company wouldn’t consider merging its stores until it had undertaken a proper business case to gauge whether such a merger is in the company’s best interests. If the merger failed, the shareholders would revolt! The people you see in this hall today are the shareholders of the Minister’s proposed merger, and we’re not convinced that the deal being put to us is in our best interests. There’s many similarities between that analogy and the Council merger situation we have before us. You can’t expect residents of Great Lakes Council, particularly those of small remote communities such as Hawks Nest, Tea Gardens and the many other tiny villages on the north shore of Port Stephens, to make an assessment of their future local governance until a proper business case is produced. We need to be assured that the Minister’s proposed merger is set up for success, not failure. Trevor Jennings President/Secretary Hawks Nest-Tea Gardens Progress Association

For the 13’s Billy Watt, Dylan Long, and Nathan Katz tried hard. Mitchell Barr and Angus Devon kept working. William Markam was strong

up front. For the 15’s Bailey Battle was a standout. Reefe Leslie’s work rate continues to climb, and Will Smith was resilient in defeat. Tommy Tukana was elusive in the centres, supported by Bradley Marshall. Both teams will take lessons from their game. They will break throughout the school holidays, before playing round 3. The Hawks Nest Golf Club sponsored Lady Hawks won their opening competition game at Dora Creek. On a high from successful trial games the previous week, the girls, in an entertaining game won by 26 points to 12. Leilani White scored two tries, while Taylah Cooke, Teagan Barr, and Montanna Gessey scored one each. Taylah Cooke, Montanna Gessey, and Sami Davidson kicked one goal each. The Lady Hawks will play Morriset at Myall Park next Sunday in the lead up to the Hawks vs Cardiff fixture.

With some players absent, due to Wednesday Pennant duties, it was great to see that the scores were relatively balanced. The team of Barry Goode, Ken McKeown and Ron Drake managed third place with +28. Filling second place 0n +31, were; Kevin Barbie, Paul Carter and Henk Faber. With a very creditable +39 and taking home the money, were; Bruce Everitt, Col Amos and David Rimmer. Well done! In the Newcastle District

Hawks Nest retained the Tilligerry Challenge Trophy with the most placings, that included three 1st and 2nd. However, two pairs from Tilligerry were placed 1st and 2nd in Section B, and two of our visitors won raffle prizes. Results on Friday 1 April 2016 (Tilligerry Bridge Club visit). Mid-Week Pennants, The Pelican Pest Control Mighty Dolphins played away at Fingal Bay. The Fingal Bay synthetic was just a tad slower than Tea Gardens but the Dolphins felt very much at home on the surface. It was a good tight game throughout with the Sean Mearrick team holding Fingal Bay to a 20-20 draw. Elevated to skip, Mark Hair’s team trailed for most of the match but with an eye on the Master Board, they lifted with a great 5 on the 14th end to hit the lead. They ran out winners 21-17. In the remaining game Richard Lee’s team were pivotal to Tea Gardens keeping their nose in front. They had a 9 shot lead at the 14th end when Fingal Bay threw everything at them to close the gap to be within 5.

Great concentration over the next 3 ends saw them pick-up their game to run out winners 24-15. The match score Tea Gardens 65, Fingal Bay 52. A great win which cemented the Dolphins in second place in the competition. Next week’s game should be a thriller when Tea Gardens take on Wallsend at home. The Dolphins will be out to reverse their previous loss to Wallsend. 8 April: A disappointing field of only 12 players contested the Friday Jackpot Pairs today. With so many players committed to Saturday Pennants and also to the Club Major Pairs, I guess it was not so surprising. The team with the highest margin of +9 was the team of Dennis Wilberforce and Brian Emmett. They were closely followed

Palmer & Jean Yessayan. Monday 4 April 2016 (Howell): 1 Chez Rands & Leslie Falla 2 Gordon Morrison & Rex Stoessiger 3 Sue Matheson & Carol Richards. Handicap Winners - Chez Rands & Leslie Falla. Friday 8 April 2016: Section A: N/S 1 Mary Weatherley & Sue Donohue 2 Margaret Rowdon & Beth Milne 3 Pat Marr & Dawn Dale. E/W 1 Wendy Haycock &

by Mark Hair and Stewart Sturrock on +7. The Jackpot was not won and stands at $180.00 when the Jackpot Pairs returns on Friday 22 April. 9 April: In Newcastle District Pennants today the Pelican Pest Control Dolphins had some unfortunate results with the Grade 3 side having a tough time at Nelson Bay, going down 34-80. The Grade 4 side, playing at home to Karuah RSL, led early but finally succumbed to Karuah by 7 shots finishing 59-66. Of special mention in this match, the Ron James side, beaten all-ends-up early in the game and trailing 8-17 at the halfway mark, fought back valiantly to win 28-24. Well played! Grade 6 was the one shining light posting a great win at home against Tomago 79-40.

All teams winning their games. The Dave Austin four winning 27-16. Ron Webster’s team played some amazing bowls to win 29-9 and Doug Naylor’s team, not to be outdone, capped-off a great day winning 23-15. Grade 7 was away at Fingal Bay and had a disappointing 6 shot loss after Max Stephens’ team had a great win 27-8. The Dolphins going down 55-61. 10 April: In Sunday Introduction to Bowls today 27 players participated. A big welcome to new bowlers; Brian Knight, Lorraine Coleman, Peter King and Zac Byrnes. Zac is Ross Barry’s grandson so he has the pedigree for great things! Winners were Lorraine Coleman, Tim Grant and Dot Montgomery. Lucky losers were; Ross Smith, Neil Montgomery, Lon

Richards and Ray Prigg. Thanks to our cooks, Ross Barry and Barry Goode as well as Coach, Geoffrey Muggleton. The quarter final round of the Club Major Pairs was played today in ideal conditions. The results were as follows: aryl Martin and Ron James defeated Bob Skewes and Bill Thrift 20-15. Jeff Baker and Steve Pell accounted for Col Amos and Dave Rimmer 26-12. Sean Mearrick and Richard Lee won their match over Ben Brown and Paul Syron in a hard-fought precision game, 22-16. Extra time was called for in the remaining game with Barry Drayton and Ron Webster locked at 23 -23 with Ross Barry and Merv Mills. Ross and Merv clinching the win at the 22nd end winning 25-23. The semi-finals next Sunday will be well worth watching.
