MIDCOAST Water and Great Lakes Council recently met with concerned Hawks Nest residents regarding the irrigation upgrade of Myall Park in Yamba Street, Hawks Nest. The proposal has been met with mixed reactions however Great Lakes Council and MidCoast Water feel they have addressed and communicated openly with residents to diminish concerns put forward. The meeting, which was held on Wednesday 2

September, saw around 12 residents talk to Council and MidCoast Water. Council’s Manager of Parks and Recreation, Mr Andrew Staniland said, “It was very pleasing that by the end of this meeting, we have agreed to proceed with a trial of the new irrigation system.” Some residents remain uncertain and even publicly objecting to the upgrade which is scheduled to go ahead. CIVIC PRECINCT SITE Council was very fortunate to obtain the old school site in Forster’s CBD adjacent to the School of Arts site. The acquisition has allowed us to think big and entertain many new options to make sure our development of that site is in the community’s best interests. To that end, we have called for tenders to appoint a development manager. This move will ensure that we can lay the very best options before our community when we ask for your input. We have also applied for grant funding to assist with the project under the Federal Government’s National Stronger Regions Fund programme. You can find out more about the project on our website or contact Council. GRANTS FOR OUR PARKS We were very pleased to hear we have received $447,634 in funding from the NSW State Government’s Public Reserves Management Fund Program (PRMFP). The funding will help deliver an upgrade of power and water at Nabiac Showground ($377,190), the surfacing of the toddler wet play area at Nabiac Swimming Pool ($20,444) and the replacement of termite damaged light poles and obsolete lighting in the lighting towers at Bulahdelah Showground ($50,000). Council will be working closely with the Bulahdelah Showground Committee and Nabiac District Swimming Pool Committee to deliver these projects.

PARKING SENSORS YOU’LL PAY IF YOU OVERSTAY Visitors and locals alike need to be aware that there will be parking sensors in Memorial Drive and Wharf Street from Monday 12 September. Working with our Chamber of Commerce, we have placed the sensors to ensure people don’t overstay in car parks close the main street. This will mean you can get a car park when you need to get business done and shop quickly. There are 60 new car spaces opening up in the new Wallis Street car park (opposite Forster Towers) which will be untimed and all-day spaces should you need to stay longer.

SPRING HOLIDAYS Spring school holidays start on Saturday 19 September and after experiencing one of our best winter seasons ever for visitors, we are hoping to have lots of people enjoying our beautiful holiday region this spring. For those who may be carers for children, please see our school holiday activities in our libraries.

Stormy is at Festival

q INFORMATIVE: Christian Patteson will be at the Wildside Festival and lead his well attended Spotlight Walk.

Lucky Wideside Child will Win

LOCAL identity Christian “Stormy” Patteson is again heavily involved in the Wildside Festival this year, as he has been in its entire 10 year history. On Friday 11 September he will lead his ever-popular spotlighting walk from Hawks Nest newsagency at 7pm. He doesn’t think he can match last year’s effort where he found two koalas but he is sure he’ll find possums, spiders and squirrel gliders. So, bring the kids and a torch. On Saturday he will lead a koala spotting walk from the “Old” library in daylight at 11:45am following Gail and Ian Morphett’s koala talk. Another highlight of the Festival is the wildflower display Stormy puts on in the Community Hall, including some of his stunning photography and, in his spare time, he is judging the Festival photography competition. Last week he was doing some scouting for likely koala spotting sites and amazingly found his first one of the spring, a young male, in the grounds of the Hawks Nest Community Hall. It would be great if he was still there for the Festival.

Dealing with concerns

q DISCUS PAD: The build-up currently occurring when irrigation is on in Myall Park. FROM Page 1 Phillip and Stuart Daniel told Myall Coast News Of The Area that at the meeting neighbours commented the spray was drifting about half way down the car park in a couple of knots of breeze. “Where Mr Staniland viewed from our verandah, you could see the obvious unsuitability as the spray would directly impact our homes with nuisance recycled sewage spray if implemented,” said Mr Daniel. “Only a sub surface system or diverting to the croquet and Providence Bay Park and retaining the oval with groundwater irrigation would solve this issue,” he said. Another concerned resident, Denis Hainsworth took a photo morning after

the meeting showing current irrigation pooling in the discus pad. “This would present a significant health risk to children and animals if it were recycled sewage,” said Mr Hainsworth. MidCoast Water’s Group Manager Planning and Development, Mr Daniel Brauer said that the treated water will be subject to very rigorous testing before it is released down the pipes. “MidCoast Water ensures the water meets health standards before release,” said Mr Brauer. “Three state government agencies - NSW Health, the Environmental Protection Authority and the NSW Department of Primary Industries (Water) have expressed their support for the implementation of the

scheme and the irrigation of Myall Park.” Recycled water has been used extensively across Australia and in the Great Lakes and is proven to be a safe method of reusing treated effluent for irrigation of public open spaces. Council and MidCoast have listened to the concerns of residents living close to the Park and believe they have adapted the irrigation system to address these concerns. Council will install new sprinkler heads that pump less water over a smaller area, to better keep the water on the field. Council has also

rescheduled the irrigation to take place at 2am on selected days, to both minimise inconvenience to Park users and reduce evaporation of water. Wind meters have been installed which will alert the

system to stop irrigating once winds pick up. This will ensure prevention of wind drift of the irrigation water. “We look forward to interested members of the community being

where onlookers were able to get him out of the water. The member of the Black Head Surf Club was first assisted by a doctor who was on the beach at the time. His wounds were best attended to as the chopper was on its way. Mr Quinlivan had lost a lot of blood and speediness was very important. A NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI) shark biologist identified the shark species as a Great White based on a formal investigation of the bite pattern. “It’s estimated the shark was about 2.5 metres in length,” a spokesman said.

THE shark that attacked 65 year old David Quinlivan has been identified as a 2.5 metre Great White. Mr Quinlivan was bit after being struck off his surf-ski at Black Head Beach Hallidays Point, north of Forster last Friday morning. The retired firefighter was airlifted the John Hunter Hospital and had surgery to severe injuries located on his lower leg. He was alone in the surf at the time of the attack. Mr Quinlivan fell into the water and was able to get back on the surf ski. He was able to get closer to shore

POPULAR: Some of the large crowd who attended last year’s Myall River Festival.

THE Myall Coast Chamber of Commerce & Tourism (MCCT) is well underway in preparations for this year’s Myall River Festival on Saturday 31 October repeating last year’s successful one day format that attracted over 6000 people. The MCCT is pleased to announce a major feature of the 2015 festival is partnership with the Myall River Action Group in celebrating the progress of recent river rejuvenation works by featuring a series of eye catching cruises to ‘the short cut’ during the day on a Ferrylink vessel. A great deal of interest from local and afar is being generated by the achievements of the rejuvenation project.

The educational cruises will allow an up close look at the effects of the works so far and hopefully a dolphin encounter or two. Access to the cruises will be by gold coin donation. Boat departure times will be confirmed closer to the event. Chamber President Graham Halley said, “Everyone in our community has always known that everything is Better by the Myall and the festival provides the perfect opportunity for locals to celebrate our river and areas’ appeal and to invite family and friends from out of town to come and experience it with us.” A full all day program of entertainment and activities both

on and off the water will include musical entertainment and stage performances, street performers and fun roving characters, on water demonstrations and sailpast, the Green Paws Pet Show, a wide range market and food stalls and community information stalls, amusement rides and free Kidz Play Zone, Illuminations and lantern parade, plus the conclusion of a spectacular fireworks display at approx. 8:15pm. The event coordinators wish to hear from any local artisans or food producers who may be interested in having a stall at the festival. For further information contact Coordinators Craig Foot on 0428 685 232.

BULAHDELAH Meals on Wheels needs you! “We’re not calling for volunteers, although helpers are always welcome, but we would love to be serving hot lunchtime meals to more of you in our community,” said Meredyth Rae from the Meals of Wheels group at Bulahdelah. “We have been delivering delicious hot meals, prepared in the Great Lakes Nursing Home kitchen, for many, many years,” she said. The Meal on Wheels service has allowed elderly people to remain in their homes as long as possible and helped support, plus take the load off friends and relatives who provide for

their loved ones. They also have helped people of all ages, some of who need time to recover from a stay in hospital or an operation. Ms Rae said, “Our wonderful volunteer drivers are always ready for a chat. Sometimes being the only face clients see throughout their day.” “Many of you may think, ‘Oh, I don’t need meals on wheels yet!’, but we’re there simply to make your life a little easier as it gets more difficult for you to prepare your own meals.” If you’d like to organise meals for yourself, or for someone you care for, please call Meredyth Rae on 4997 4146, or mobile 0401014146.

Shearwater developments on agenda Hawks Nest Tea Gardens Progress Association meeting is scheduled for Monday

THE upcoming Hawks Nest Tea Gardens Progress Association meeting has some key issues to be discussed and addressed. The meeting is planned for 14 September and first on the agenda is the report on the Shearwater developments. Progress Association President Trevor Jennings said this report will be contacted by Ronnie Nichols and will particularly interest those residents on the ‘heights’. Other items of discussion will be the truck noise on Myall Way. “We will discuss Council’s negative response to the Association’s request for an advisory sign to alert

truck drivers not to use their loud exhaust brakes when travelling along the flat section of Myall Way, after having descended the hill from the lookout into Tea Gardens,” Mr Jennings told Myall Coast News. The third item on the agenda is designed to generate some initial discussion regarding the future of the swimming pool. Council’s long term plan involves relocating all Council recreational facilities, including the pool, to an area within the future Myall Downs development but there is some concern that this location is far too remote from the rest of the community, especially those

q PRESIDENT: Trevor Jennings will chair the upcoming Progress Association meeting. residents at Hawks Nest. “Of course, a modern indoor pool is well overdue but its design,

layout and location will need to be the subject of intense community consultation,” said Mr Jennings. The proposed and recently reported Grey and Thespian Mardi Gras is a project that has been initiated to further rejuvenate the commercial centre of Hawks Nest. Mr Jennings said, “The discussion at the meeting is expected to confirm the need for the event, funding sources and seek feedback on the many aspects of its organisation, to be run during Seniors Week next April.” “Volunteers from the general community are sought to help with the planning and implementation

of the event. In this regard, I can be contacted on 0431 250 563,” he said. Other items to be discuss will be Marine Drive, Footpath widening in Kingfisher Avenue, Lights and Pelicans on the bridge, Friendly Grocer site at Hawks Nest, Seating and landscaping at Hawks Nest, Proposed boardwalk at Winda Woppa, Proposed ‘Dump-point’, $1000 grant for artwork, Volunteers for the Information Centre, and other general business. The meeting is scheduled for a 7pm start, in the Old Library in Booner Street Hawks Nest this Monday 14 September.

From Dads to Fashion Lioness group wrap up Father’s Day, now preparing for the Annual Fashion Show

q

DAD’S DAY: Ted Mowbray, Alwyn Fripp, George Mallam and son Richard Mallam.

By Max BOWMAN TEA Gardens Hawks Nest Lionesses are making preparations for this year’s fashion show at the Hawks Nest Community Hall on Monday 28 September from 7.00pm. With sponsors, BT’s for Fashion and Mungo Road Surf Shop the night promises to be a great opportunity to view and purchase the latest in fashion whilst supporting the fundraising of the Lionesses. President Vivienne Boyd said, “We are looking forward to this year’s fashion parade and to raise much needed money for

Restoration and Rehabilitation MEMBER for Myall Lakes Stephen Bromhead is calling for community organisations, Great Lakes Council and Greater Taree City Council to apply for a share in the NSW Government’s $5.3 million Restoration and Rehabilitation Grants Program. The Grants Program aims to help community organisations, local councils and other groups run projects to prevent or reduce environmental degradation at a local level. “I urge community organisations, other groups, Great Lakes Council and Greater Taree City Council to apply for this grants program which helps protect and repair local environments,”

Mr Bromhead said. “This grants program is a grass roots program which aims to restore degraded environmental resources, including rare and endangered ecosystems, protect important ecosystems and habitats of rare and endangered flora and fauna and prevent or minimise future environmental damage.” Environment Minister Mark Speakman said these grants would help communities and organisations to conduct important environmental work that protects, restores and improves vulnerable ecosystems from degradation.

one of the areas worthy organisations.” “We have yet to announce the recipient which will be decided at an upcoming meeting.” Vivienne added. Tickets for the parade are available from both Myall Pharmacies at Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest, Mungo Road Surf Shop, BT’s for Fashion and CTC. Tickets are $10 which includes a supper. The 2015 Lioness Fashion Parade will also have raffles and other fun activities all in the name of charitable fundraising. Keeping up with their caring and supportive nature, Thursday 3

September saw the Lionesses make their annual Father’s Day visit to Peter Sinclair Gardens and The Manor. The ladies shared a morning tea with the gentlemen and presented each one with a small gift to help get them in the spirit of Father’s Day. These visits are much appreciated by the men and enjoyed by the Lionesses who recognise that not everyone gets a visit on Father’s Day. The smiles on the faces of the men was enough to show the thanks for the caring of a community group dedicated to helping others.

Extraordinary entries YES it’s true, lots of people have ‘gone batty’ in the name of the Bat Flats Art Competition, according to the organising team of this very unusual national event which emanated from the dual townships of Hawks Nest and Tea Gardens. There has been a wide variety of entries and also many enquiries about buying some of these unique artworks. From quirky to traditional, simple to highly decorative – they all make ideal feature pieces for an outdoor wall while discreetly giving little micro bats much-needed homes. Arts industry notable Joe Eisenberg, OAM, will arrive in town on Friday 2 October to make his independent determination of the winners. Then that evening the Myall River Art Walk group and Tea Gardens Hotel will co-host a special preview of the Bat Flats Art Competition exhibition. This will be held from 5pm to 7pm at the Dolphin Room of Tea Gardens Hotel, waterfront on Marine Drive, Tea Gardens. An invitation is extended

to the community to attend the preview and find out what all the fuss has been about. It has been said that the exhibition could be the biggest display of decorative bat flats in the world! Entry is free and a drink and nibblies will be provided. Attendees can vote for their favourite bat flat in the People’s Choice award, and of course consider purchasing a beautiful bat flat. Funds raised will go toward the promotion of art and assisting endangered native species. Entries will remain on display in the Dolphin Room over the October long weekend (2-5 October, 2015).

Radio Plays With A Difference

Funding Security for Sheds

q DIRECTOR: Elizabeth Deane. ELIZABETH Deane, the Director for Myall Coast Entertainers (MCE) this year has chosen ‘Radio Plays With A Difference,’ and would like to share her interpretation of such plays. “Following on from the successful radio play, ‘Cyril’s Missing Nuggets’ that was successfully performed at North Arm Cove a few years, the delighted audiences said I must do it again,” said Elizabeth. “It is all in the deliverance of the lines, facial expressions and body language,” said Elizabeth. “Because there is no actual acting it is quite a challenge and stretches the imagination of both players and audience.” “Unlike traditional radio plays, the actors will be in costume and the stage will be dressed,” said Ms Deane. “The Goons took advantage of this medium/genre and you can watch them, and other radio plays on U Tube.” Elizabeth has adapted the two plays, ‘He Said And She Said,’ and ‘The Misused Mill Girl’ into radio productions for the first time ever. These live plays will have a powerful visual component, unlike normal radio which relies only on dialogue and sound effects, according to MCE President Allan Wilson. The two plays will be performed from the 14 to 17 October. Tickets at $15 each, are available now at Tea Gardens Ice Cream Shack as well as Hawks Nest and Tea Gardens Pharmacies. BYO food and drink.

SHED BENEFITS: Men’s Shed, Frank Seysener and Member for Paterson Bob Baldwin MP.

FEDERAL Member for Paterson, Bob Baldwin this week has said that local Men’s Shed’s throughout Paterson would benefit from the Abbott Government’s Father’s Day announcement to secure funding for the organisation until 2019. Mr Baldwin said Round 11 of the National Shed Development Programme was currently open and the local sheds could apply for up to $8,000 in funding. “Our local Men’s Sheds play a very important role in our community to keep men active and contributing to their mental health and physical wellbeing,”

Mr Baldwin said. “I have long been an advocate for the fantastic work the Men’s sheds do, I recently visited the Raymond Terrace Men’s shed, who were successful recipients of a $6500 grant, and I know the good works these Sheds do, they reduce social isolation, particularly for older men and people living in rural and remote areas,” Mr Baldwin said. To provide certainty, the Abbott Government has guaranteed funding for Men’s Sheds for a further three years to 2019. “The decision to guarantee

Council’s Senior Ecologist Mat Bell said, “The Great Lakes is a region of incredibly high biodiversity. Landholders can use motion-activated cameras to learn about the native wildlife on their properties. They are also invaluable in learning about the presence and movements of feral pests, such as wild dogs, foxes and feral cats. We are pleased to offer a scientist of the calibre of Dr McLean to inform the community about how, where and why motionactivated cameras can be used.” The workshop will draw heavily from Dr McLean’s own experience and involve both theory and practical demonstrations. “We have already had a lot of interest in this workshop. Our aim is to encourage people to learn more about their natural environment. Through this learning, we can expect greater awareness and stewardship, which will lead to better care of our precious environment,” said Robyn Lamond of Karuah and Great Lakes Landcare. The workshop will also see the launch of an exciting new program, involving a loans scheme of motion-activated cameras for local landholders to become Citizen Scientists. “Hunter Local Land Services

Participants will see first-hand how effective these cameras are and they will discover what’s living on their land,” said Mrs Lamond. Nev Reis, Regional Landcare Facilitator from Hunter Local Land Services said, “We are proud to support this event, as it encourages landholders in the Karuah and Great Lakes area to learn more about their land, and about managing native flora and fauna for biodiversity, while supporting sustainable land management practices for the future”. “Hunter LLS encourages landholders to become involved in citizen science programs to act as volunteer collectors of information about native species travelling through and living on properties. The Program also helps identify pests such as foxes, wild dogs and feral cats that have a large impact on our native fauna,” Mr Reis said. The workshop is funded by the Foundation for National Parks and Wildlife, with support from Hunter Local Land Services. Numbers are strictly limited. Elder abuse inquiry

NEW: Parking sensors are designed to improve turnover of parking spaces close to Forster businesses.

You’ll pay if you overstay Parking sensors in Forster, fairer for everyone

YOU would be forgiven for thinking Great Lakes Council was simply revenueraising by adding parking sensors to Memorial Drive Forster from Monday 14 September, but in reality the introduction of the sensors in Memorial Drive and Wharf Street Forster will be a fairer system for drivers in the Great Lakes. And you might be surprised to learn that it’s not about the revenue at all! Council’s Manager of Waste Health and Regulatory Services, Mr John Cavanagh confirmed that parking sensors, which are electronic devices installed under the road surface in a car parking space, will be installed in Memorial Drive and Wharf Street. The sensor measures how long a car remains parked. “In actual fact, Council is hoping that all drivers will comply with parking limits in Memorial Drive and Wharf Street and no one will get fined,” said Mr Cavanagh. “However, a small number of drivers regularly choose to disobey the rules by parking longer than allowed. These drivers take away public parking resources that otherwise would be available to law abiding drivers in our community.” “Please warn your family and friends

and spread the word - you will get fined if you overstay in Memorial Drive and Wharf Street Forster. We’d like everyone to be aware,” said Mr Cavanagh. Rangers have been asked to issue cautions only, not fines, for a brief honeymoon period to help drivers get used to the new system. The Forster Tuncurry Business Chamber President, Gary Gersbach said the sensors are a result of the Chamber working with Council on the proposed removal of car parking spaces in Memorial Drive. “The sensors should enable more efficient use of car parking so the business community will benefit and demonstrate the benefit of this parking rather than their removal. We support timed parking spaces. The shorter stays allow our customers to find a car park in busy peak periods.” “In addition, more visitors to an area generates more business for traders. If you want to browse at the shops for an extended time or go fishing on the wharf, why not take advantage of free parking just a short stroll away in Wallis Street?” The sensors work by detecting when a car parks and measuring how long it stays in the space. The sensor is programmed with the parking time limit

and has knowledge of the current day and time, as its clock is synchronised with an internet time server. If the car stays longer than the posted time limit, plus a grace period, a patrolling ranger will be alerted. The ranger can then inspect the car to determine whether it is appropriate to issue a penalty notice. “If you are one of the vast majority of Great Lakes residents and visitors who obey the parking time limits in Memorial Drive and Wharf Street, you have nothing to fear,” said Mr Cavanagh. “On the other hand - you’ll pay if you overstay.” “These sensors have been used since 2005 in many New South Wales locations, including Newcastle, Coffs Harbour and Port Macquarie,” said Mr Cavanagh. “The sensor information has been upheld in court appeals against fines and is considered reliable.” Council expects that after a short introductory period, fewer penalty notices will be issued for this offence - so Council’s revenue will drop substantially. Drivers who previously disobeyed parking time limits will learn that overstaying is no longer a bet worth taking.

A NEW inquiry into elder abuse in New South Wales has been established to help protect the elderly from neglect, financial abuse and physical or sexual abuse. Established by existing Upper House Committee ‘General Purpose Standing Committee No. 2’, the inquiry will examine the prevalence of abuse experienced by the elderly – one of the most vulnerable groups in our community. The committee will be chaired by the Hon Greg Donnelly MLC and will commence public hearing in late November, with the committee intending to report by May 2016. Shadow Minister for Ageing Sophie Cotsis will

also join the inquiry. The committee will be seeking submissions from individuals and the wider community. The closing date for written submissions is Sunday 15 November 2015. Submissions can be made via www.parliament.nsw. gov.au/gpsc2 Shadow Minister for Ageing Sophie Cotsis said, “As many as 50,000 older people in NSW have experienced some form of abuse and only one in five cases of elder abuse are reported – this needs to change.” “This inquiry will be crucial to ensuring some of the most vulnerable people in our community are protected and cared for,” she said.

NSW Minister for Ageing John Ajaka has announced an exclusive offer with OPSM that will allow NSW Seniors Card Holders to take advantage of additional discounts on health services. Mr Ajaka said that the offer with OPSM of 20 per cent off frames and 20 per cent off lenses is available to all Seniors Card holders across NSW for six weeks from Friday 28 August to 7 October 2015. “I am delighted to announce this additional discount being offered by OPSM to NSW Seniors Card Holders because I am committed to delivering the NSW Government’s election

commitment to ease cost of living pressures for our seniors,” said Mr Ajaka. Mr Ajaka was joined by Seniors Card holder David Collyer of Lindfield who said that the OPSM offer is another benefit of being a NSW Seniors Card holder. “This is a great offer – every little bit helps,” said Mr Collyer. Myall Lakes MP Stephen Bromhead said, “As a wearer of reading glasses myself I know the costs involved, so the offer of 20 per cent off frames and 20 per cent off lenses is available to all Seniors Card holders for six weeks from now to 7 October 2015.”

Won’t proceed with the Bank Deposit Taxes BALDWIN: Lower taxes are a key part of plan

BOB Baldwin has said the Government will not proceed with Labor’s Bank Deposit Tax. “Labor’s Bank Deposit Tax would have imposed costs of $1.5 billion on Australians with savings,” Mr Baldwin said. “This Government is in the business of protecting the savings of people from Paterson – not raiding them. Our action today reflects the Government’s determination to deliver lower, simpler and fairer taxes. “This decision comes after extensive consultations with stakeholders and the community. “Labor’s Bank Deposit Tax would have put regional and community banks at a disadvantage relative to the big four banks, further disadvantaging hard working Australians.”

which is scheduled for 10 and 11 October. Prior to that however, the AGM will take place at Nerong Hall on Saturday 12th September. “This is a catered event and it appears that there will be many new faces on the committee,” said Ms Motum.

MyallCoastNews.com.au

Mr Baldwin said the tax would have penalised Australians for being financially responsible. “What’s worse – then Treasurer Chris Bowen booked the revenue – with a start date of 1 January 2016 – but failed to legislate the change,” Mr Baldwin said. “The Coalition Government has also dumped Bill Shorten’s raid on inactive bank accounts. “In total we said have reduced the overall tax burden on Australians by nearly $7 billion since coming to office. “We have scrapped the carbon tax, scrapped the mining tax and delivered the biggest tax cut ever to small business. “Lower, simpler, fairer taxes are a key part of this Government’s plan for a stronger, more prosperous economy.”

Great to see the dredge

I AM delighted by the news that the dredge is finally in place in the Eastern Channel ‘short cut’ and soon to be operational. Congratulations to the community for all your hard work, which has finally paid off. To the Myall River Action Group, thank you for all your time and effort, over many years, in very difficult circumstances. It took masterful management to align all of the agencies involved to see some action and for funding to be put in place. I would like to also acknowledge the enormous efforts of the staff at Great Lakes Council and many NSW and Federal government agencies for working hard to make this a reality. However, had it not been for the continued pressure from the community, there is no doubt in my mind that there would not be a dredge there today. Thank you and well done; I hope you start seeing and enjoying the benefits soon. I look forward to celebrating your community’s achievements, and its natural beauty, at the upcoming Myall River Festival. Kate Washington Member for Port Stephens

Why is there no progess? Dear News Of The Area,

Dear News Of The Area,

q MESS: Pelican droppings on the walkway on the Singing bridge.

MyallCoastOpinionof the area

IT is now over 6 months since the storm damage occurred to the Singing Bridge overhead lights, resulting in some lights positioned over the roadway, while others are positioned over the river, and others, well, they sit wherever. As well, the pelican “resting” deterrents on the lights, that were removed nearly 9 months ago, have still not been replaced. I understood that Essential Energy agreed early this year to replace the pelican deterrents, and placed an order for same. My concerns, stated back in March 2015, concerning safety and health issues, would be addressed, once the deterrents arrived and were fitted. So why no action? Pelicans have resumed sitting on the lights, defecating into the river, on the footpaths, and roadway. Watch out if you are a driver going over the bridge at the same time a “dropping’ from the sky fills

your windscreen. So the Progress Association has lobbied to ensure the deterrents are never replaced. They do not speak for the community at large. I hear that their intention is to encourage the pelicans to roost and attract visitors to the site and take photos, thus bringing revenue to the businesses in Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest. Forget the health and safety issues. Will they also supply tissues to those defecated on? And what about cleaning up the mess? Will they roster Members to regularly clean the roadway and footpath? I think not! If all the Progress Association Executive can come up with to attract visitors, is to photograph same, no wonder there is no “progress” occurring!

A NEW surfing event will be held for the next three years at Boomerang Beach as part of the NSW Pro Surf Series, which has been secured by the NSW Government. The event will be held on 1 – 3 March 2016 and promises to attract a world class line-up of surfers to the region. “This fantastic new event will provide a boost to tourism in the Myall Lakes area and I am pleased it has been secured by the NSW Government, through our tourism and major events

agency Destination NSW,” Stephen Bromhead, MP for Myall Lakes told Myall Coast News. “The Boomerang Beach round of the NSW Pro Surf Series will be an official World Surf League Qualifying Series event, attracting top surfers and showcasing the region to surfers and fans from around Australia and the world.” “The Pacific Palms area where Boomerang Beach is situated is just south of Forster and is close to beautiful Wallis Lake, Elizabeth and Blueys Beaches,” he said. “This area has so much natural

SURFING beauty and I am sure there will be many visitors who will want to return on a regular basis.” Minister for Trade, Tourism and Major Events and Minister for Sport Stuart Ayres said the NSW Pro Surf Series will provide a boost to local economies throughout the State. “It is estimated that the Series as a whole will contribute almost $4 million to the NSW economy in visitor spend over the next three years, making a positive impact on the State’s coastal communities as competitors and spectators stay in local hotels, eat at local restaurants and visit local attractions,” Mr Ayres said. “Securing events like the NSW Pro Surf Series is important as we continue to build our State’s regional visitor economy, and work towards our target of doubling overnight visitor expenditure by 2020,” he said. Other events in the NSW Pro Surf Series will be held at Maroubra Beach on 15-17 January, Cabarita Beach on 1-3 February and Avoca Beach on 9-11 February.

There was one game of fours (with a swinger), one game of triples and one game of pairs played. The winners for the day, drawn from the cards, were Lynne Green and Laurel Laver.

SAT 5/9 saw 20 players take part in the Jackpot bowls. So we had two games of triples and two games of pairs. The winners on the day were Freda Laughton and Ken Southern with plus 24. Runners up on plus 16 were Faye Mason, Butch Hutley and Shane Reed. Winners of the $300 Jackpot with a winning score of plus 2, Susan Gate and John Bartyn. Two games mixed championship pairs this week saw Rita Brown and Steve Locke defeat Val Lynch and Grant Bidgood in a close game by 16 shots to 14. And in the second game Linda Reed and Kevin Reed had a 41 to 12 win against George Jones and Barbara Jones. A reminder to all bowlers, we have 30 travelling bowlers from Golden Pines on Wednesday 16 September. We need members there on the day to give them a warm welcome and a good game. So if you can please put your name down to play, there is a list on the notice board.
