Welcome to the Country McCaskie, Roberts at opening By Len ROBERTS

q

RANGER: Paul Crossan, Co-ordinator of Regulatory Services at Great Lakes Council.

Overall pleased Council Rangers By Dave BRAZIER PATROLLING the Hawks Nest and surrounding areas public places during the recent school holidays, Rangers and members from Great Lakes Council Regulatory Services Division reported that they were fairly pleased with the behaviour and actions by both locals and visitors to the area. Speaking with Myall Coast News on Saturday 26 September, Mr Paul

Crossan, Co-Ordinator of Regulatory Services with Great Lakes Council said, “Overwhelmingly it has been a very good holiday period as far as council compliance goes.” “We have had some minor but usual instances to attend to, majorly that being dog and pet related issues, illegal and dangerous parking issues and other minor violations,” he said. “Overall we are more than pleased with the actions of the local community and visitors alike. It hasn’t

been a particularly busy holiday period for the region and also for the Regulatory Services team, probably partly being due to the recent wet weather,” he said. Mr Crossan and Council Ranger Mr Martin Garnett were located inspecting regular parking issues in and around the Jimmys Beach and Winda Woppa areas, who also stated that patrols and compliance monitoring will increase as the warmer weather and the Christmas Holiday period approaches.

COUNCILLOR McCaskie and I were privileged to attend the opening of this year’s surf season at Hawks Nest Surf Club on the 19 September. The occasion also marked the launch of the “Vigilant Hawk” a history of the Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Surf Club, by Ian Dunlop, a tireless worker for the club. It is a very interesting read and can be purchased from the club as well as other businesses throughout the town. Our volunteer Lifesavers give much to the town, not only in time, but indeed their vigilance in keeping our beach safe. Although Carol and I were not there as “councillors” but as past members of the club we

would like to acknowledge the dedication of the volunteers and that Council holds their work in high esteem. At the opening I was asked to give the Welcome to Country. At all Council meetings we open with prayer usually from visiting clergy and the Mayor undertakes an Acknowledgement of Country. I have been asked on occasions what is the difference between a welcome and an acknowledgement; and why is it important. Hopefully the following may help to explain the importance and reasoning behind Welcome to and Acknowledgement of Country. I have based the information on work undertaken by Reconciliation Australia. MEMBER for Myall Lakes Stephen Bromhead is pleased to have met with members of the design team for stage 1 of the redevelopment of Manning Base Hospital which met in Taree. Mr Bromhead said the design team’s visit to Taree is a major step forward in the delivery of stage 1 of the $20 million redevelopment of Manning Base Hospital. “This is a very positive step in the process to upgrade the hospital that was made possible with the allocation of $1.35 million in this year’s State Budget,” Mr Bromhead said. “It also shows that the NSW Government is getting on with the job of redeveloping the hospital in line with the commitment made by the Minister for Health Hon Gillian Skinner and myself in March.

working hospital is very complex as its routine procedures must be maintained during the construction phase.” Mr Bromhead said he is keenly anticipating the major economic impact that the hospital’s redevelopment will have in the Manning. “The visit of the design team shows the NSW Government is ontrack with vital preliminary work and flies in the face of those few people who claim the Government will not redevelop the hospital. “Anyone who knows about construction work and finance understands the methodical steps needed to ensure the building process runs smoothly. “What is needed throughout

“The appointment of the design team in early September was a crucial milestone in the process and the team is now working with Hunter New England Local Health District and NSW Health. “This work will consider all future redevelopment requirements of the Manning Base Hospital campus and detailed planning and design will be completed on the stage 1 works. “The planning process for a

Superannuation assets totalled $2.02 trillion on 30 June 2015. Super therefore continues to be an important consideration in property settlements for married, de facto and same sex couples.

If your relationship has broken down and you have an SMSF with your ex partner/spouse your responsibilities as a trustee/ trustee director continue until you have resigned as a director/trustee. A Welcome to Country is a ceremony performed by Aboriginal people to welcome visitors to their traditional land. It can take many forms, depending on the particular culture of the traditional custodians. A Welcome to Country is not a new thing, invented recently for the sake of political correctness. Protocols for welcoming visitors to Country have been a part of Aboriginal cultures for thousands of years. Despite the absence of fences or visible borders, Aboriginal Bands or clans had clear boundaries separating their Country from that of other clans. Crossing into another clan’s Country required a request for permission to enter—like gaining a visa—and when that permission was granted the hosting group would welcome the visitors, offering them safe passage. For example, in some areas visitors would sit outside the boundary of another group’s land and light a fire to signal their request to enter. A fire lit in response would indicate approval and welcome from the land owning group and often, on meeting, gifts would be exchanged. While visitors were provided with a safe passage, they also had to respect the protocols and rules of the land owner custodians while on their Country. Today, obviously much has changed and these protocols have been adapted to contemporary circumstances but the essential ingredients of welcoming visitors and offering respect remain in place. An Acknowledgement of Country is a way of showing awareness of and respect for the traditional Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander custodians of the land on which a meeting or event is being held; and of recognising the continuing connection of all people who follow in the footsteps of those traditional custodians who have gone before and the importance of recognising respect for our environment now and into the future. It is recognising the legacy of the past for the future. At a meeting, speech or formal occasion the speaker can begin their proceedings by offering an Acknowledgement of Country. Unlike a Welcome to Country, it can be performed by anyone. There are no set protocols or wording for an Acknowledgement of Country, though often a statement may take the following form: “I would

like to acknowledge that this meeting is being held on the traditional lands of the (appropriate clan) people, and pay my respect to elders both past and present.” In today’s world of meetings in office buildings and school assemblies, Welcomes to and Acknowledgments of Country may seem out of place. The culture, population and environment of Australia have all changed significantly and these ceremonies can seem strange or meaningless to some. However, all areas of Australia have or had traditional owners, including where large cities are now situated. The acknowledgement recognises the importance that we are custodians of our land and the importance of respect for one another. Read how a Ngarinyin tribal elder explained a traditional welcome to country from ‘Entering country: with consent’, A night of reconciliation, extract from an Address by Susan Bradley (pastoralist, Kimberley WA), Sydney, Feb 1998 “Before whitefellas came, it was the tradition of Aboriginals that when strangers came into their particular country to hunt or to gather, or to just pass through on their way to other places, that the host Aboriginals would go out to welcome them. When they met, there would be the formalities

of greeting. Part of the ceremony of welcome would be the men sitting around and talking men’s business whilst the host women would take the visiting women and children to a women’s site to talk women’s business. When this was completed, the two groups would join again and the men would hunt for kangaroo, goannas or bush turkey - and the women would prepare an area for eating and would gather firewood and berries, fruit, nuts and lily roots for a meal. Then the ceremonies—the corroborees or jumbas would commence—and the dancing, the singing around the fire could well go on, not only all night, but sometimes for many nights in a row. Each jumba with a message—each with its own story—men, women and children taking part. Whilst during the day, the visiting tribe would be taken and shown the sites of significance and be told the stories of the spirit of the land they would be passing, In this way, the hosts believed that by the end of formalities, when the strangers were ready to move on - they would not be considered strangers but friends who now had the spirit of the country in their hearts—they carried the Wunggud with them—just like the people who lived there. They believed that once the spirit of the land was in their hearts, then those people would never damage the land - they would love it and care for it like those whose home country it was…” I think that statement says it all.

Dowling says goodbye OWNERS of Dowling Real Estate, Heather Davy and Kim Bright, bid a final farewell to their business last Wednesday after eleven years and one month of serving their clients during their exciting journey in the field of real estate. On 1 September 2004, Heather and Kim opened their office at 197 Myall Street and after five years moved across the road to larger premises, due to their business expanding, to 170 Myall Street, Tea Gardens. Both ladies want to sincerely thank their landlords, vendors, purchasers and tradies for their loyalty and friendship over the past eleven years and

now look forward to maintaining these friendships on more of a social level and of course not forgetting to mention the love and genuine support that both Heather and Kim have received from their respective families. Dowling Real Estate has been very fortunate to have had great staff members on board and these include Lisa who has been an integral part of the business together with Stephanie and Fiona who have been the all important back-up part time staff members. Heather and Kim would like to wish Stuart and Vanessa Sinclair every success with their new venture, Ray White q Tea Gardens.

ON Wednesday 30 September two separate vehicles in the Dark Point car park and the ‘Dead Mans’ car park at Hawks Nest were broken into by having a window smashed and hand bags and other belongings stolen. If anyone has any information on the person/s responsible you are encouraged to contact police on 49970244 and provide that information. This is an opportunistic crime that any one could fall victim to. Apart from the stolen items the victims are also left with an expensive repair bill to have the vehicles repaired.

Stop service

ON Saturday 26 September a 32 year old Tea Gardens male was refused service from a local licenced premise. He has left the premise as required however attempted on at least three separate occasions to re-enter and refused to move away more than 50 metres from the boundary. He was subsequently issued with a $550 infringement for refused person attempt to re enter.

Skipper arrest

FAREWELL: Kim Bright and Heather Davy leave the Dowling Real Estate business.

AT 4pm Monday 28 September 2015 police stopped a vessel on the Karuah River at Karuah and subjected the 34 year old male skipper to a breath test. He returned a positive result and was placed under arrest and conveyed to Karuah Police Station for a breath analysis. Analysis conducted which returned a reading of 0.056. He was issued with a court attendance notice for operate vessel with low range PCA.

Communities still say Bad TV By Rachel REITSMA SO it was reported in the ABC regional news on Sunday 27 September that regional communities are plagued by poor reception. Federal Member for Hume, Angus Taylor, quoted: “There are tens of thousands and perhaps more Australians across regional areas who are suffering from poor TV coverage, and I think it’s time for the Government to fix it.” This is not a new story for the Myall Coast and Great Lakes area as there are constant complaints from many residents about poor TV reception ever since switching from analog to digital reception. Bulahdelah resident, Maria Stubbs, shared with Myall Coast News, “It is usually in the evenings after 7 p.m. and on the weekends

the reception will not work. “We are now opting to watch DVD’s or the computer because we can’t get good free-to-air reception.” Bob Baldwin, Member for Paterson, is aware of the situation. In March 2015 the following media release states: “More than a third of my constituents have been experiencing intermittent digital television reception for over 5 years. “I am delighted to be working towards a resolution for them,” said Mr Baldwin. “I am disappointed that Regional Broadcasting Australia Holdings are yet to submit their proposal, despite repeated assurances and timeframes that were set and failed to be delivered to the Federal Department of

Communications. “I implore them to submit their proposal as soon as possible to ensure that we can get the constructions on new towers underway before next summer.” And the latest media release on 25 August 2015 states that funding of $827,690 has been secured from both Federal Government and

Regional Broadcasting Australia Holdings to improve terrestrial coverage in Paterson. But only time will tell when these towers will be up and running. So the only options are to wait for these services to be provided or to pay personally for upgraded equipment. c

Bungwahl road Reconstruction of section of The Lakes Way

GREAT Lakes Council is currently undertaking work to reconstruct a section of The Lakes Way through the village of Bungwahl. The work involves upgrading a 600m length of The Lakes Way with significant improvements to the road width, drainage, pavement condition and lighting. Mr Ron Hartley, Council’s Director of Engineering Services said, “Previously the road pavement at this location was in poor condition with inadequate provisions for drainage.” The work will also see an improvement to the standard of the

intersection at Seal Rocks Road. “The intersection of The Lakes Way with Seal Rocks Road did not meet current design standards presenting a safety issue at this location, particularly during holiday periods when traffic volumes increase significantly,” said Mr Hartley. Council’s Tuncurry Depot Operations staff are undertaking the construction project. Council’s Operations Manager, Mr Robert Fish said, “work is progressing well with substantial earthworks, drainage, road pavement and lighting work already undertaken”.

“To enable the works to progress the road is under alternate traffic flow conditions during working hours. Motorists are urged to exercise caution when driving through the work site and to abide by roadwork speed limits in place,” said Mr Fish. Initial work has largely focused on the length of the project north of Seal Rocks Road. “The section of the road north of Seal Rocks Road is expected to have a bitumen seal applied midOctober weather permitting. All work is expected to be completed in November,” said Mr Fish. “The work is being undertaken

through Council’s Regional Road Construction program with funding provided from Roads and Maritime Services Repair Program and Regional Roads, Block Grant. Great Lakes Council has an ongoing commitment to upgrade The Lakes Way, and further work on The Lakes Way in Bungwahl is expected to be undertaken in the 2016/17 financial year,” said Mr Hartley. Mr Bromhead said council is upgrading 600 metres of The Lakes Way with significant improvements to the road alignment, drainage and pavement condition through funding provided by the NSW Government’s

Roads and Maritime Services and Regional Road Block Grants programs. Member for Myall Lakes Stephen Bromhead said, “The work by Great Lakes Council shows how well an upgrade can be undertaken on a busy stretch of road by engineers who know and understand the engineering and geo-technical works required to build a good road.” “The previous road pavement at this location was in poor condition with inadequate drainage and I am pleased that the new design includes improvements at the intersection at Seal Rocks Road,” he said.

Baldwin: Broadband wait over Upcoming major event HUNDREDS of current interim satellite users in Paterson and hundreds more waiting to connect to satellite broadband, are a step closer to having access to fast, reliable broadband with the successful launch this morning of the first of NBN’s two world-class communication satellites. “The launch of the Sky Muster satellite from South America means the wait for access to the National Broadband Network is almost over for many remote communities,” Bob Baldwin said “This Government recognises that broadband access can assist in overcoming many disadvantages faced by Australians in rural and remote areas. “We are determined to maximise

the value of these satellites by delivering content in the most innovative and efficient ways, and by prioritising uses of high social value such as distance education and e-health.” NBN is investing around $2 billion on the design, construction and launch of the two satellites and for other ground-based equipment and services. Sky Muster at its sister satellite will be among the world’s most advanced communications satellites. When operational, NBN’s satellite broadband service will cover more than 400,000 homes and businesses across Australia. A region-by-region rollout plan is being developed to manage connections to the new service as all users will require a new external receiver dish and modem to connect to

the NBN satellite service. The transfer of ISS users to the new service will occur over a period of around 9 to 12 months. Communications Minister Senator Mitch Fifield said NBN’s two highcapacity satellites would use the latest technology to deliver speeds of up to 25 megabits per second, which is the same as that offered by fixed line ADSL2. The second NBN satellite is scheduled for launch in early 2016 and users will be able to connect broadband and voice services from around April next year following beam commissioning and product testing. Households and businesses will be able to choose from a range of monthly download plans across two different speed tiers.

q WELL DONE: The happy crew

By Dave BRAZIER ARGUABLY the largest singing group in the district, The Myall Melodians, presented ‘The World In Harmony’ at the Grange Country Club over two successful evenings and one Matinee performance in early September. Myall Melodians member, Mr Ray Hosking, told Myall Coast News, “We had over 500 people in total attend the three performances, they were a total success.” “Throughout the production we were grateful to have a total of 60 talented performers, all aged between 50 and 80 years of age, and most of them had never performed on a stage anywhere,” he said. Songs performed included legendary titles like There’s No Business Like Show Business, The Sound of Music, The White Cliffs of Dover, Ascot Gavotte, When Irish Eyes are Smiling, The Last time I Saw Paris, Swanee, Ol’ Man River, Alexander’s Ragtime Band and Hello Dolly. Attracting an admission fee of just $10 per person, and due to the events overwhelming success,

this has enabled the Myall Melodians to raise enough money to purchase a new Yamaha organ / keyboard for the residents at Peter Sinclair Gardens. Peter Sinclair Gardens offers medical/rehabilitative care, restorative care and dementia care. A presentation of the organ / keyboard took place at Peter Sinclair Gardens on Thursday 1 October at 2.30pm. In attendance of the presentation were members of the Myall Melodians, Margaret Rowden, Michael Harvey and Ray Hosking, along with Kay de Mestre who is the Regional Manager for RSL LifeCare. Kay de Mestre told Myall Coast News, “This is a wonderful gift made possible by the generosity and hard work by the Myall Melodians. This gives our 41 residents a reliable and quality instrument to listen to, and will also greatly assist us with our ANZAC Day & Remembrance Day Services.” “The old piano won’t be enjoying full retirement just yet, with the nostalgic old instrument along with its squeaky pedals being relocated to another section of the facility," she said.

Dear News Of The Area,

As much as I love movies, it just isn’t nearly as gripping and powerful to me as live theatre. It is an escape from everyday activities and I like to be taken away from it all. It can make me ‘a fly on the wall’ and maybe even a bit of a voyeur. Live theatre is a unique art form that can entertain, question or move. The collaboration of the writer, the director, the actors, the production team (set, costumes, lighting and sound) plus the live audience make it very special. When I am watching our local members performing for our community, I am overwhelmed by their commitment and generosity to their audiences. I know that everyone involved puts their heart into these live plays. Why not get off the lounge, and see for yourself. Please support your local theatre group, the Myall Coast Entertainers, in their October production. Allan Wilson

Our next lunch is on 9 October at the Bistro in Bulahdelah Golf Club, Pacific Highway, Bulahdelah at 12 noon. So if you would like to meet the friends you know, please phone me on 0419 803 600 for a reservation. Allan Foy

I REFER to your article in the edition of 24 September of Myall Coast News titled 'Traffic too much trouble' where you outlined the difficulties for residents in accessing and egressing the Puma service station on the corner of Myall Way and Myall Quays Boulevarde in Tea Gardens. I note that the article was, quite correctly, based upon the minutes of a recent Progress Association meeting, and it referred to the design of a temporary, and inexpensive, roundabout that I had forwarded to Great Lakes Council a few years ago. The Progress Association recently wrote again to Council seeking its reassessment of my proposal and indicating that immediate action was required to overcome the difficult and illegal traffic movements that are currently occurring. I've received a response from Council's Traffic Engineer today in which he confirms that "Council will not be proceeding with

MyallCoastNews.com.au

the installation of a temporary roundabout at this time" and "previous approvals for development in the area required the intersection to be signalised, with the use of a roundabout at this location no longer favoured by the RMS and State Government." I've attached a copy of Council's letter so that you might wish to publish the Traffic Engineer's comments more extensively. It appears that Council has no interest in addressing the traffic issues at the intersection until such time as further major development occurs (whenever that might be), and then the proposed solution is to install traffic signals. Don't hold your breath waiting for something to happen! Trevor Jennings President/Secretary Hawks Nest / Tea Gardens Progress Association (Myall Coast News will publish the letter on our website)

Advice water WHEN it comes to securing enough water for the future – both to allow our area to grow and to continue to maintain the quality of life we currently enjoy – MidCoast Water is weighing up a number of scenarios, and they are asking for community input. MidCoast Water, as the water and sewer authority for the Manning, Great Lakes and Gloucester areas, has been looking at the options available to deliver water security for the future as part of their Our Water Our Future review. The Our Water Our Future Strategy is MidCoast Water’s 30 year plan for integrated water cycle management and outlines how the organisation will work to manage our communities water resources for generations to come. “We have combined community feedback with cost estimates and technical knowledge to create a number of scenarios and we now ask our communities to help us decide which of the scenarios will be the most acceptable plan for the future,” acting general manager Brendan Guiney explained. The identified solutions may include indirect potable reuse – which means purifying recycled water to mix with water sourced from existing streams or groundwater and then undertake further treatment and distribution as

drinking water, desalination or new water storages such as dams. “In any scenario we will continue to assist our community to saving water through our water saving program. Mr Guiney indicated MidCoast Water had taken on board the feedback from earlier stages of consultation that any long term plan will need to continue a commitment to the water saving program. Now MidCoast Water wants to know which of the solutions - new water storages, desalination or indirect potable reuse - appeal to our community. Each scenario combines more than one solution to our long term water management needs, and has a different capital cost and different impact on the typical residential account, both of which are clearly illustrated to the survey participant. “All the scenarios have costs associated with them, and now we are asking our community to look at those costs, and how they may impact on their water account and let us know which are the most acceptable to them.” Other issues covered in the survey include the disposal of treated water and the possible extension of services to small communities.

Pink Winnie attracts attention By Dave BRAZIER

TOURIST Parks and Winnebago caravans might seem a bit of a normal combination these days, but on Tuesday 29 September when a big PINK Winnebago rolled in to the Big 4 Karuah Jetty Holiday Park site it was for a very special reason. The Pink Winnebago caravan pulled into the Big 4 Karuah as part of the The Pink Minnie National Breast Cancer Foundation’s East Coast Breast Cancer Awareness road trip. This particular

trips main aim is to raise much needed awareness and of course funds for future breast cancer research. Several communities like Karuah along the NSW East Coast enjoyed being able to join in on the action and of course the fun of one of Australia’s favourited charity events, that being the Pink Ribbon Breakfast with all proceeds going to the National Breast Cancer Foundation. The mornings activities at Karuah included a beautiful morning tea and breakfast, face painting and temporary

tattoos for the kiddies, games and balloons. There was also some product sampling and some giveaways form the National Breast Cancer Foundation. The team from The Pink Minnie thanked Michael from the Big 4 for his help by manning the BBQ, and also extended thanks to Robyn, manager of the Big 4 Karuah Jetty Holiday Park, for purchasing every pink item in town to help decorate the main gazebo. You can track progress of The Pink Minnie tour via their website: www. showyoursupport.org.au

TASTE: Associate Professor Neil Sprat.

Taste trial by HMRI RETIRED accountant Daniel Purcell has two good reasons to be thankful for cutting-edge research and

clinical treatment taking place in the Hunter. The 87-year-old Adamstown Heights resident endured two

strokes within 15 months, was treated with different clot-removal therapies at John Hunter Hospital and made complete recoveries. For the first stroke, which occurred while walking through a park, Mr Purcell was deemed a suitable candidate for the TASTE trial being led by HMRI researchers

from the University of Newcastle and Hunter New England Health. “Everything went a khaki colour and I remember thinking ‘am I dead or am I dying?’,” Mr Purcell said. “My next recall was waking up in the stroke ward.” Administered a clot-busting therapy, Mr Purcell was able to leave hospital five days later then underwent 10 days of rehabilitation. He experienced no further side effects. “Our group has really pioneered work in this area, using advanced imaging techniques to select patients who are suitable for the treatment,” Associate Professor Neil Spratt, one of the TASTE research leaders, said. “The trial is now being rolled out nationally and internationally.” In August, Mr Purcell suffered his second, unrelated, stroke at home. This time, the clot was lodged towards the rear of his brain and doctors employed a revolutionary new retrieval system. “Fortunately it’s relatively rare that people have a second stroke these days, because we’re pretty

Sustainable agriculture

good at preventing them after the first one,” Dr Spratt said. “The second stroke occurred in a different part of Mr Purcell’s brain, where it is difficult to dissolve blood clots. My colleague Dr Ferdinand Miteff inserted a catheter near Mr Purcell’s groin and passed it up the artery – the clot was then physically pulled out.” The endovascular clot-retrieval procedure is a recent innovation evolving from research, with five separate trials showing it to be effective for acute stroke. Dr Miteff is one of very few neurologists in Australia currently trained to perform the procedure. “Sometimes with bigger clots they just don’t dissolve in time to stop brain tissue from perishing, so technology improvements now make it possible to go into the big arteries and capture the entire clot and remove it in one sweep,” Dr Miteff said. “It’s a bit like plumbing – if you have blocked pipes you can use a detergent but sometimes you need to physically unblock it. Same with the brain.”

Farmers can apply for Land Management Grants

FARMERS in the Manning Great Lakes District are now able to apply for Manning Great Lakes District Land Management grants program totalling $108,000 to help care for the region’s natural environment and support sustainable agriculture. Manning Great Lakes District Land Management grants of up to $15,000 are available for landholders and/or land managers that are currently engaged with the Hunter Local Land Services through grazing industry groups in the Manning-Great Lakes Catchments to undertake on-ground works. The works range from changes to grazing practices, managing stock impacts on sensitive areas to regeneration or planting of native vegetation. Some larger scale grants may also be considered. The grants are part of the Australian Government’s National Landcare Programme and managed locally by Hunter Local Land Services — one of Australia’s 56 regional natural resource management organisations. Funding is delivered in partnership with NSW Government Catchment Action NSW Program. “This is a great opportunity for c

local communities to tackle important on-ground works aimed at addressing local natural resource management priorities,” Federal Member for Paterson, Bob Baldwin said. “Through these Manning Great Lakes District Land Management grants, communities are invited to deliver simple, local and long-term solutions to improve the productivity of their land and their local environment,” he said. “It’s also pleasing to see that Australia’s 56 regional natural resource management organisations are directing more than 20 per cent of their National Landcare Programme Funding to help support grant rounds such as these, as well as other local community engagement activities,” Minister for the Environment Greg Hunt said. “The Australian Government is ensuring that funding is invested locally to deliver real change that is targeted on and off farm to safeguard productive capacity in the land for the future and to safeguard our environment,” Minister for Agriculture, Barnaby Joyce said. “This is crucial because farmers, landcarers and community groups know what works best for their properties, environment and communities,” Mr Joyce said.

“It is also a key driver in delivering on the Australian Government’s commitment to support productivity, competitiveness and sustainability of Australia’s primary industries, and good management of natural resources,” Mr Joyce said. “Hunter Local Land Services works closely with the local community to reach a shared understanding of the environmental and agricultural issues facing the Manning Great Lakes District and what work is needed to address them,” Mr Bob Baldwin said. “By getting involved, Landcare groups, farmers and community organisations working in natural resource management can help ensure the grant programme is used to its maximum benefit, targeting local and regional priorities,” Mr Baldwin said. The Australian Government is investing $2 billion to help support better natural resource management across Australia. As part of this commitment $1 billion will be invested through the National Landcare Programme, including more than $450 million directed in regional funding to Australia’s 56 natural resource management organisations.

Value your mind for mind health

MEMBER for Myall Lakes Stephen Bromhead has marked October as the start of Mental Health Month, by encouraging everyone to take some time think about their mental health, and seek help if needed. As a registered psychiatric nurse, I know how important mental health is and help is available. The theme for Mental Health Month this year, ‘Value Your Mind’, aims to encourage people to prioritise their own mental health and wellbeing just as much as they would to maintain their physical and social health. Mr Bromhead said mental health issues affect approximately 1 in 5 Australians every year and the awareness month was a good opportunity to understand the importance mental health plays in our daily lives, whether someone has experienced a mental illness or not. “The busy hustle and bustle of our daily lives often means people forget to stop for a moment and consider their own mental health and wellbeing,” Mr Bromhead said. “Mental Health Month provides the perfect opportunity for people to reach out to one another and talk about mental health and in doing so help break down the stigma and discrimination that people with mental illness face every day.” Mental Health Month is coordinated by the Mental Health Association of NSW. For more information on events being held throughout NSW during Mental Health Month visit www. mentalhealth.asn.au.

All but the prize winning entries were offered for sale over the October long weekend at the largest bat flats display in the world – the Bat Flats Art Competition exhibition at Tea Gardens. Funds raised will go toward the promotion of art and assisting endangered native species. Winning entries will be displayed as part of the Myall River Art Walk program, and appear on the galleriesinthegardens.com. au website. Held on the first Saturday of each month, the markets attract a lot of interest from both locals and visitors alike.

ANGIE Parkes from Carrington, Newcastle, has won the $5,000 first prize in the Bat Flats Art Competition, which uniquely combines art and wildlife conservation and introduces a new art form to the world – decorative homes for tiny micro bats, Mother Nature’s ‘Mortein’ for mosquitoes and sandflies. Angie’s entry, entitled ‘The Key to Our Existence’, is a bat flat masterpiece featuring various found objects, including keys, bed springs and even a stove gas jet, to remind all that humans hold the key to micro bats survival. The national competition emanated from Tea Gardens in NSW and attracted entries from around Australia. Joe Eisenberg OAM, Maitland Regional Art Gallery’s recently retired Cultural Director, worked through a myriad of amazing and creative bat flats to judge the winners of the $10,000 prize pool. “I’m really impressed with the creative talent applied to making these micro bat homes! “The competition combined the arts and concern for endangered wild animals, and the love and care people have for both shows through in the entries. It was a wonderful initiative by the Myall River Art Walk group.” Joe says of the winning entry, “In judging many art competitions over my more than 30 year career, almost always a work jumps up at me above all the other entries. ‘The Key To Our Existence’ was no exception in this unusual art completion.” Second prize ($2,000) was awarded to Chez Rands of Pindimar for her whimsical ceramic bat flat entry entitled ‘Bat House #3. The Tea Gardens/Hawks Nest Men’s Shed took out third prize ($1,000) with ‘Possums Micro Bat Flat Resort’ – a veranda-wrapped house offering ‘a large interior for bat comforts’. $500 each went to Di Ayers of Hawks Nest for ‘Vacancy, Kids All Gone’ – described as a shoe house fantasy, Suzanne Fischer of Port Macquarie for the colourful ‘Bat-chelor Pads’, David Matheson of Tea Gardens for ‘Safe as Houses’ – featuring rustic old locks and knobs, and Gail Morphett of Hawks Nest for ‘Casa Batlo’, inspired by Antoni Gaudi’s famous house of the same name in Barcelona. For a team effort of five batflats, a special commendation certificate goes to Mount Eliza Secondary College at Morning Peninsula, Victoria. Students aged 11, 12 and 13 produced the bat flats with the assistance

an impressive range of fresh produce. Speaking to Myall Coast News, he said, “After a run of wet market days, it’s really fantastic to see the weather being kind to us today.” “Being the long weekend also this market day is very busy, with so many people coming into the area last night and today for the weekend I’m sure all the stall holders will be

They enjoyed lunch with us, and were more than delighted to receive a cheque for $6,000 for the Oncology Unit. This day could not have happened without the donations from so many businesses and clubs in our two little towns, their generosity amazes us year after year.

The Women’s Bowling Club Committee also do a mighty job of organising and arranging all the Tombola prizes. Not forgetting our Social Committee who delighted us with a beautiful lunch. The day would not be complete without our Auctioneer Max Stephens getting more money by putting all sorts of items under the hammer, for instance 5 dozen oysters, wheel alignments, and more. A very successful day all round!!

Nailbiter, but won the day Women’s Bowls q TOP BOWL: Three X Three team Skip, Doug Naylor, playing in the last end at the beautiful New Lambton Bowling Club. Tea Gardens won the match.

BOWLS

Tea Gardens Men’s Bowls By The JAFFA

SEPTEMBER 30;After the big wet it was a pleasure to be back bowling in the sunshine and on a dry green. Most committed bowlers were getting a bit touchy as withdrawal symptoms had kicked-in. In the Newcastle District Three X Three competition, Tea Gardens played a team from the Valentine Bowling Club at home. This match was washed-out from last week. In the initial part of the contest, Valentine took charge and threatened to give the local team a real hiding. At the half-way mark Valentine had opened up a ten shot lead 29-39 but gradually Tea Gardens found their line and length and by the 14th end they hit the lead 48-45 which drew a huge cheer from the gallery. They were to hang on to that 3 shot lead right to the end winning a real nailbiter of a game 67-64. In the individual matches, Doug Naylor’s team won their fair share of ends but conceded a six and two fives to see themselves playing catch-up for most of the game. A late rally at ends 16,

17 and 18 saw them close the gap a little going down by 11 shots, 17-28. The Dave Rimmer combination had a “ripper” of a game. It was nip and tuck all the way and it was not surprising that their match ended in a 23-23 draw. In the remaining game the Max Stephens side trailed for the first 6 ends and hit the lead on the 7th with a nice 4 and then a 3 on the 8th. A wonderful 7 on the 14th saw them open up a commanding lead then running away with the game 27-13. It was a wonderful team effort and it was really brilliant that it was played in front of a home crowd that cheered them on all the way. Out of the 59 teams entered Tea Gardens is one of four teams remaining undefeated at this stage. Next week they will take on the powerful East Maitland Club at home. The games are just getting tougher. A big “thank you” to Geoffrey Muggleton for umpiring. In the Wednesday Nominated Triples competition, a good field participated playing both their games on the grass green. The winners on +34 were; Barry Goode, Garry Melrose and Merv Mills.

14 MYALL COAST NEWS of the area

Runners-up were; Garry Wynne, John Moore and Stewart Sturrock. The lucky draw was won by; Bill Bridges, John Yabsley and Alan Greenhalgh. October 2: The usual Jackpot Pairs game gave way this week to support a very worthy local cause. Club members joined with visitors and invited guests to play in the annual “Kneelers” versus “Grippers” event in support of the “Start in Life” charity. It is a matter of record that the “Kneelers” won the contest 79-70 although the results were not subjected to close scrutiny. Including amounts donated from other sources the day saw $2,500.00 raised which will help local disadvantaged children get an equal start in life through their education. Friday Jackpot Pairs will resume next week with one jackpot remaining unclaimed on $200.00. In Sunday Introduction to Bowls, 22 players attended on a very warm morning. The winners were; Lon Richards, Dorothy Thompson, Rusty Sergeant and Ray Priggish. Lucky Losers were; Ray and Pam Gilchrist, Brian McPhie and John Moore. Thanks to our cooks, Merv Mills and Barry Goode and coach, Danny Johnson.

FROM Page 16 We salute them! Tea Gardens Women’s Bowling Club Report: Tuesday September 29th. Round 0ne of the Club Minor Singles Championship was played today. Four teams competed in beautiful conditions. No weather excuses this time. The first match was between Bev Rhodes and Loretta Baker. This was a fairly close game with Bev winning with a score of 26 to 21. The next match was Jeannette Emmett versus Bev Stephens. This game had its ups and downs with Bev leading Jeannette 7 to 3 on the seventh end. Jeannette caught up and took the lead and won the match 25 points to 19. The third match was Joan Hanson against Karen McPhie. Joan took the lead on the fourth end and stayed there to win the game 25 to 19. In the remaining match, Karen Green played against Kerry Faber. Karen took control of the game from the start and had a runaway win with a score of 27 to 12. Social Bowls. There were 20 social bowlers on the green today. Chris Gallagher joined us,she is a bowler from Valentine, holidaying in our district. The format was 1 game of

triples and 2 games of fours, with a swinger. Our bowling sort of took second place today as we were too busy watching the singles matches to concentrate too much. The winners with the lowest score were Pressy Swadling, Ann Mackenzie, Pat Baker and Wendy Brand. Thursday 1 October: The second round of the Minor Singles Championship was played today. There was on forfeit game with Laurel Laver unable to play against Julie Kennedy. Julie goes through to the next round. Bev Rhodes played against Jeannette Emmett. The score was level at the ninth end and then Bev took the lead and won the match with a score of 25 to 16. The next match was between Karen Green and Joan Hanson. Karen took the lead from the start and powered on to win the game 27 to 3. The third match was between Pam Gilchrist and Carol Hayden. Pam took an early lead and stayed there, keeping Carol to 3 points. Pam won the game 26 to 3. Social Bowls. There was a smaller turnout for our social games today with only 14 bowlers on the green. The format was 1 game of triples and one game of fours. The winners with the highest score were Frances Betar, Sandra Leisemann, Deyonne Page and Liz Kelly.

Oncology Day Friday 25 September: Our Oncology Day was once again a resounding success. The attendance was very pleasing with over eighty members and guests present. Unfortunately no bowls were played. Why? The weather of course!! Besides being a fun day, the aim was to collect money for the Oncology Unit in the Mater Hospital. The President of the Mater Ladies Auxiliary attended with two committee members. They enjoyed lunch with us and were presented with a cheque for $6,000, which they accepted with great pleasure. The Day could not have taken place without the prizes and cash donated by so many Businesses and clubs in our two local towns. Their generosity never ceases to amaze. Our Bowls Committee and our Social Committee worked so hard to make this day happen. The Committee spent hours arranging all the Tombola prizes, and the Social Committee catered for and served a beautiful lunch.
