A MULTI-million dollar redevelopment of Peter Sinclair Gardens in Hawks Nest is set to commence in the coming months and will almost double the size of the existing facility. This comes as a result of the Federal Government’s

announcement that RSL Care Ltd has been successful in securing an additional 25 federally-funded aged care places. Making the announcement last week, Federal Member for Lyne Dr David Gillespie said the $6million expansion of the facility will provide

a greater range of care options including additional dementia places. “This is a wonderful announcement for not only the Hawks Nest-Tea Gardens area, but also the broader Lower Mid-North Coast region,” Dr Gillespie said. ”I have met with both the current and former

Aged Care Ministers and departmental officials arguing the case for additional funding for aged and home care, particularly in our region where we have one of the highest demographics of elderly in the nation.”

“I am delighted that the Minister and her department are responding to the growing demand for these important services by investing millions of dollars in our region.” Mid-North Coast RSL Lifecare Regional Manager Mr David Roose, said the additional places for the Hawks Nest facility will help meet growing demands. “RSL Lifecare was pleased to receive an allocation of an additional 25 federally-funded aged care places and has allocated in excess of $6million to ensure that the building and surrounds meet resident need and community expectations,” Mr Roose said. “The addition of further beds to the existing 41 will allow us to provide for the expected

during and after construction.” With Peter Sinclair Gardens serving the local community since 1992, Mr Roose said the new services and jobs will allow them to continue their strong links with the community. “As the building gets under way there will be a need for additional staff, both direct care and ancillary, and this should

also provide a direct benefit to the local area,” Mr Roose said. “The facility has close ties with the community and community groups and looks forward to continuing these relationships.” The redevelopment is expected to be completed in the second half of 2017.

If you have written a will please do not attempt a DIY remedy to change a part of it. For example, rather than go to the trouble of making a trip to a solicitors’ office it might be tempting to write on a copy of your will, some changes you wish to make or to stick additional pieces of paper to the will making changes to particular gifts.

If you do this, it makes things much harder for your family to sort out your affairs when you die. Assuming Appointments Fridays 2pm-6pm a grant of probate is required, the Supreme Court of New South Wales 191 Myall Street has to be satisfied that your will Tea Gardens www.mullanelindsay.com.au properly reflects your wishes. are strict legal requirements for a will to be valid. These laws are sensible because they seek to make sure that there is proper proof of your wishes. After your death, you are not available to be consulted. Making DIY alterations to your will causes additional expense and trouble and ultimately your afterthoughts may not be implemented.

It is a much better strategy to either write a new will or make a codicil (a valid change) to your will and it is best to consult a solicitor about these changes to ensure that the new will or codicil properly prove your wishes.

MOVIE: Some of the locals enjoying the Dolphins premiere screening.

By Ronnie NICHOLS THE Myall U3A and crew had the pleasure of greeting a group of Seniors on Friday morning, last week, at their regular Dolphins meeting. They had been invited to attend the premiere screening of The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. Every time we watch this film and its partner The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel there is something new at which to marvel. The fine acting of Maggie Smith, Judy Dench, Bill Nighy and in the second film Richard Gere make these films a delight and the happy ending Bollywood style should ensure that the audiences who watch the screenings this coming Friday and Sunday nights will be out of their seats and dancing. It was a great run-

Dr

through for the screening of three films, cartoons and Movietone News as part of the Grey and Thespian Mardi Gras celebrations this coming weekend. The hall has been decorated in true Indian style by U3A members led by our own innovative Emeritus Architect and U3A president Chris Klimek, the dedicated art group and some very talented and resourceful interior designers. Reminiscences from the Dolphins seniors group about the former “picture theatre”, the hall in Tea Gardens, included a comment from Gwen that “I was not in a hurry, putting my lippy on getting ready for the pictures....when we arrived the queue was across the road and along the river!” We are hoping to create

a festive atmosphere with a similar roll up to the Mardi Gras screenings of the Marigold films on Friday 8th and Sunday 10th April in the Hawks Nest Community Hall. Doors open at 6pm for 6:30pm and entry is $5.00. Before the films and at intermission there will be a free wine tasting on Friday evening and Indian food on sale both evenings and surely there will be ice creams, jaffas, minties and bottled water as well, don’t you think. Sunday Matinee is for the kids with a screening of Paper Planes, icecreams and drinks and lots of fun to follow. So this coming weekend is going to be a great time to be in Hawks Nest. Make sure you don’t miss out on any of the festivities.

PROJECT: A section of The Bucketts Way, close to Weismantels Road.

Support for Buckets Way

THE Bucketts Way Route Access Strategy project has been shortlisted by Transport for NSW (TfNSW) to submit a detailed application for funding Stage 1 of the Strategy. Great Lakes, Gloucester and Port Stephens Councils submitted an Expression of Interest prior to Christmas to the NSW Government’s Fixing Country Roads Program Round Two fund. The three Councils will meet with TfNSW on Friday 1 April to confirm the way forward. The first priorities, as identified by the three councils are three passing lanes to be located in the Limeburners Creek area, near Weismantels Road and Craven Flat. Council’s General Manager

Glenn Handford says with the project being shortlisted, there is real opportunity for the Bucketts Way to receive significant funding. “This is good news for the three Councils – by working together across council boundaries we are able to provide a more strategic approach to upgrading the Bucketts Way. The key to us getting this far in the funding program was the three councils working together and collectively prioritising road projects across council boundaries.” Stage 1 of the strategy has identified three passing lanes, with upgrades to various sections of the road across the council areas. “We have identified in the

later stages of the strategy the need for upgrading bridges and also safety upgrades,” said Mr Handford. Generous support has been provided to The Bucketts Way Route Access Strategy at both State and Federal Levels by Michael Johnsen, MP Member for Upper Hunter and David Gillespie MP Member for Lyne. “General community and business support for The Bucketts Way upgrade has also been extremely strong,” said Mr Handford. “We are keen to seek State and Federal government contributions to the upgrades and to this end we will continue to seek support from our local members of parliament.” ADVERTISEMENT

HUNDREDS upon hundreds of residents attended Great Lakes Council’s Community Information Sessions in Bulahdelah, Stroud, Tea Gardens and Forster last week. The sessions, led by Great Lakes General Manager Glenn Handford, provided details concerning the proposed merger of Great Lakes, Gloucester and Taree Councils. Mr Handford confirmed that Great Lakes was supporting the proposal subject to a blueprint, explaining the merger needed to be undertaken in a way that creates efficiencies of scale and capacity. “The merged council needs to be appropriately structured to set us up for success,” Mr Handford said.

“There is a need to be able to deliver efficient and effective services to all communities in the combined council area.” Mr Handford explained as a result of the merger, the combined backlog of projects across the three council areas would require funds in excess of $125million to clear. While the merger could create a projected $23million in savings over 20 years, when divided between the three councils the saving is just over $500,000 each per annum. A portion of the projected savings is expected to come from streamlining Senior Management roles. “Obviously only one General Manager would be required instead of three, and there would also be some savings from the reduction in the number of

Counsellors and senior staff,” Mr Handford said. With Great Lakes deemed fit on all criteria, Mr Handford said they needed to develop a blueprint for success of the merged council. “It’s not by accident that we are fit for the future, we have good management practices in place, we have a strategic council, good interaction with management

at all levels and interaction with our community,” Mr Handford said. “We want the blueprint to have sound financial and asset management and representation to ensure our communities have a voice.” Mr Handford said the proposal is now in the hands of the State Government who will make the final

decision by midyear. With the series of public inquires with Local Government’s delegate Dr Ian Tiley occurring this week, the final avenue for residents

to voice their opinion on the proposed merger is via written submission which closes on 15 April.

Liquor license hick-up Discounts on bills THE license of a local premise has been suspended, temporarily prohibiting the sale of liquor and conducting gaming services on site. A spokesperson for the Independent Liquor and Gaming Authority (ILGA) informed News Of The Area this action was taken as the premises did not currently meet licencing requirements. “The NSW Police Force has advised the Authority that the current licensee left the premises in early February 2016,” the ILGA spokesperson said. “The Authority has not received an application to transfer the liquor licence to another party, including the

business/premises owner.” Manager of the Plough Inn Hotel Alan Davies spoke to News Of The Area and said he was expecting the hotel would return to normal service within the next few days. “The new license was to be granted, the licence number was to be transferred when the paperwork was done, but the dates were off by two days,” Mr Davies said. “We have not closed, we are just not selling alcohol.” Mr Davies said there have been no breaches of the license and that the paperwork has now been fixed up. It is expected the Pub

should have the license back within a few days. “The licence will now be held by the company and not by an individual,” Mr Davies said. “The premises have been kept open for staff to remain employed, we had the option to close it to carry out maintenance work but as our staff are casual we decided to keep it open to keep them employed.” “We’re still trading with the bistro catering for the local community and tourists.” The ILGA spokesperson said the suspension was only in place until the Authority approved the transfer of the licence.

$25 credit for online signup for either gas or electricity; • $50 credit for online signup to both gas and electricity Minister for Ageing John Ajaka said the NSW Government is doing its part to ease seniors’ cost of living pressures. “We have listened to what seniors want, I am pleased to say not only have we renewed this extremely popular deal, but added even more with a special offer for solar electricity,” Mr Ajaka said. “The NSW Government partnered with AGL in May 2015 to offer NSW Seniors Card members access to discounted energy plans. Since then, more than 27,000 seniors have joined the plan.” AGL General Manager, Marketing & Retail Sales, Mark Brownfield said AGL was delighted to renew the offer and continue to work

with NSW Government to provide NSW seniors with great savings. “AGL’s energy offer gives NSW Seniors Card holders’ access to competitive discounts off their gas and electricity usage charges as well special offers on solar and a range of other benefits. “We also have a dedicated senior’s line to answer any questions seniors might have about the program,” Mr Brownfield said. Last year the NSW Government promised to provide more savings for Seniors Card holders by investing a further $2 million over four years into the Seniors Card program to expand the number of businesses offering discounts. There are over 1.4 million people with a NSW Seniors Card, which provides discounts on a wide range of products and services from more than 2,000 individual businesses across the state. High level plan for our water future A THIRTY year plan for providing sustainable water services to our community was launched in Taree last week. MidCoast Water’s general manager, Ken Gouldthorp, and board chairperson Cr Aled Hoggett officially launched the Our Water Our Future strategic plan. Our Water Our Future details the issues MidCoast Water expects to face over the coming decades, the options and possible solutions, and it details the five key elements

of planning for the delivering water supplies into the future. “These elements involve reducing water use, ensuring water quality, securing water supplies, recycling and effluent management, and servicing small villages,” general manager Ken Gouldthorp explained. Our Water Our Future was developed in discussion with regulators, local councils and the community, by a dedicated team of MidCoast Water staff supported by a broad based

project reference group. “The consultation process undertaken in preparation for this plan was one of the most extensive MidCoast Water has undertaken in many years, and it is pleasing to know the strategy we are now implementing is reflective of our community’s aspirations,” Mr Gouldthorp said. Our Water Our Future highlights the continued importance of water conservation solutions such as water smart appliances,

rainwater tanks and leak management. Mr Gouldthorp explained such activities will help defer or avert more expensive infrastructure projects. “It also shows the need for more pipes, storages and treatment plants,” he said. “These include the proposed Nabiac Aquifer project that will help secure water supplies in Taree and Great Lakes.” The strategy also identifies the need for water storages for Bulahdelah,

Stroud and Gloucester and a further focus on increasing the reuse of treated wastewater. “At the same time MidCoast Water will continue our investigation of a second storage dam for the Manning water supply scheme and look at options for indirect potable reuse of treated wastewater,” Mr Gouldthorp said.

TELSTRA is urging customers to be alert to online scams and have warned not to respond to any suspicious emails. This advice comes as a result of a number of Myall Coast residents receiving fake Telstra email notices sent by scammers during the past week. The emails claim customers have paid their Telstra account twice and are entitled to a refund which can only be paid to a credit card. The fake emails request customers to log into “My Account” by clinking on a provided link. A Telstra spokesperson informed News Of The Area the fake emails are designed to catch customers off guard in an attempt to obtain personal information. “Phishing emails are designed by cyber criminals who target consumers and large enterprises around the world, including Telstra and our customers,” the spokesperson said.

“These emails look very authentic, often including company logos and slogans, to trick you into opening them and disclosing your personal details, including your name, address and banking details.” “The fake emails can be distinguished by the absence of a ‘$’ sign next to the amount to be refunded while others have addressed recipients as, Hi, dear customer.” The spokesperson said Telstra provides refunds if a customer has been charged in error, typically by crediting their account. “We would not request credit card details specifically for refund purposes and would only provide a refund in this manner if the customer initiated a request.” Telstra advises customers not to click on any links contained in phishing emails and to delete them immediately from their account. Phishing emails can be reported to Telstra or to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission at www. scamwatch.gov.au

Mayor’s three key hot topics

By Jan McWILLIAMS

MERGER PROPOSAL OF course the major news from Great Lakes Council this month is the NSW Government’s threeway merger proposal - to amalgamate Great Lakes, Greater Taree and Gloucester Shire Councils. We have held community information sessions late last month and the Delegate assessing the proposal, Dr Ian Tiley is concluding the public enquiry meetings in Gloucester, Taree, Forster and Bulahdelah during the first week of April. If you couldn’t attend a

public enquiry, the one thing you can do now is to make a written submission to the NSW Government before the deadline of Friday 15 April. It is vital that the community makes its voice heard to the delegate via submissions - your opinion will count. You can make a submission online at www. councilboundaryreview.nsw. gov.au or by post to: Council Boundary Review, GPO Box 5341, Sydney NSW 2001. Council’s position is that we are confident that our strategic direction and management practices are sound and in accord with the NSW Government’s vision for the future of local government - we were found to be fit under the NSW Government’s ‘fit for the future’ program. However, we acknowledge and are prepared to support the Minister’s proposal to merge the three Councils with the proviso that a blueprint for the future is developed to ensure that the new merged Council is appropriately

PLANNING PROPOSALS ON EXHIBITION

IT is still ‘business as usual” for us and I draw your attention to two planning

proposals currently on public exhibition, we welcome your feedback on these. The first proposal is to rezone two areas of the Hawks Nest business centre to allow more flexibility for local businesses and revitalise the village. The second proposal is to amend amend local planning rules to give rural land owners broader opportunities to build second homes on their

Big $40K win By Dave BRAZIER

IT’S always fantastic to hear of someone having a windfall, and in particular, if it goes to someone who really needs, it is even better news. On 23 March a carer for his elderly father from Crescent Head collected $40,000 in a group competition run for members of a handful of Clubs including Tea Gardens Country Club. Speaking with Myall Coast News Of The Area, General Manager of Tea Gardens Country Club said, “It was really fantastic to hear of a worthy winner. I’m sure $40,000 will go a long way for the carer and his father and we wish them all the best.” The ‘Superdraw’ at Tea

HOLIDAYS

ON a lighter note, after a very busy Easter period in the last

week for our local businesses, the school holidays are now upon us and we will be welcoming many visitors to the Great Lakes once again. The ‘visitor economy’ is very important to our region and we continue to support it. I hope everyone enjoys the holiday period and keeps safe.

Gardens Country Club is also associated with clubs at Wauchope, Crescent Head, Forster, Old Bar, Pacific Palms, Kendall and Laurieton, and all you have to do is be a member of one of those clubs and be present when your name is drawn. The jackpot amount starts at $10,000 and goes up $1,000 each week. That wasn’t the only win that week, a member of Tea Gardens Country Club also picked up a cool $3400 on Wednesday 27 March just by being at the club and having their number drawn. At $5.50 for a year, and with many more weekly events like bingo and raffles, becoming a member of Tea Gardens Country q JACKPOT: Club Gebneral Manager Warren Gooley excited to give Club may prove to be a lucky away the money. move indeed.

Break-in frustration

NORMALLY a very quiet area with little traffic or visitors, villages like Pindimar and Bundabah become quite busy at certain times of the year like Christmas and Easter. Cars with caravans, trailers, boats and bikes, frequent the narrow roadways visiting relatives or friends at these times enjoying the best what the area can offer. But it’s these times of the year that sometimes attracts an unsavoury element of society. Opportunistic thieves. Amongst the visitors and lots of traffic in South Pindimar on Good Friday, unknown persons have entered a residential premises

in Cambage Street and made off with an assortment of power tools which has devastated the owner. On Good Friday a white Toyota Landcruiser with two males on board, followed by another unidentified vehicle with a box trailer had been seen ‘looping the streets’ of South Pindimar for about an hour. Residents who saw these vehicles, and not recognising them as ‘locals’, became increasingly suspicious of their activities. If anyone has further information about these vehicles, please contact Tea Gardens Police on 4997 0244. Further to the thefts at Easter, a private residence at North Pindimar was broken

into by unknown persons on 2 April resulting in two chainsaws being stolen. Speaking with News Of The Area, Peter Economos from the Pindimar Bundabah Association said, “Like anywhere in the area, residents need to take extra care and be vigilant with regards to property security. We may be just out of suburbia but we are not immune to opportunistic thefts like we have recently experienced.” “Don’t tempt thieves by leaving valuables in your cars or boats, if it can be locked away and out of sight from preying eyes take the time to do just that, and look out for your neighbours also,” he said.

Bad twist leads to hospital

By Dave BRAZIER

RESIDENTS and an Ambulance Crew from Tea Gardens were faced with a difficult retrieval of a female patient on Thursday 24 March on the foreshore at South Pindimar. A 19 year old female visiting from Newcastle had lost her footing in the sand and twisted awkwardly while watching the sunset early in the evening. This resulted in a serious leg / knee injury of which with the rising tide, proved difficult to relocate the patient off the beach to the shore line. As an ambulance was called, several residents came to her aid and assisted her parents and friends move her to high ground where a make shift trolley

was employed to keep her off the ground. Ambulance teams arrived and quickly determined that the young lady suffered a significant injury and was required to be transported to John Hunter Hospital. Again, a team consisting of her parents and visitors were called upon to safely

lift the patient off the beach and onto a stretcher before being loaded into the awaiting ambulance. The status of the young lady is not known, but the parents of the patient wanted to thank the ambulance crew for their prompt and professional response to their daughters situation.

WHO would have thought that five simple words muttered in the Bulahdelah Butchery would create a buzz of excitement across the Nation? That’s exactly what happened last week when the words ‘I Wake up with Today’ brought one lucky lady a cash jackpot of $70,000. Pharmacy looking to re-vamp their Including, range two stores of products GRAEME Hackworthy’s Myall Pharmacies have the same small town approach that one might have found in the past. For Graeme, a business offering fast and friendly customer service is one he feels is an essential requirement for success in the our area. “Independent pharmacies are becoming almost obsolete and with big chains and supermarkets taking the place of small pharmacies, people are tired of the wait and non-friendly service,” said Graeme. “Even though we are

small, we can still compete with the larger pharmacies,” he said. Graeme said his committed staff keep the two stores, located at Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest, running smoothly as they provide friendly customer service and the opportunity to shop locally. Being Quality Care Accredited pharmacies, the experienced pharmacists and pharmacy assistants are able to help with many of your health related enquiries. Looking to the future, Graeme is currently planning a revamp of both stores which

will involve some minor closures. However, the result will mean both stores will present brighter as well as clean and cheerful with their eye catching displays and interesting range of products. The highlight of using either of the Myall Pharmacies is prompt, efficient and friendly service with a welcoming atmosphere. Whilst waiting for their prescriptions, or just looking for a nice gift without having to go out of the area, customers can find what they need in the pharmacy.

How can this Project have a positive result Dear News Of The Area, IN response to ‘Project to have a positive impact’ (News Of The Area, 31 March 2016). I don’t know why people are saying it would take business out of the main part of town as it seems that with the prices some change they are cutting their on throats. Take IGA for example, how

can you afford to do your weekly/ fortnightly shopping there, and if you venture to Tea Gardens (Coles), Forster or Taree how many locals do you run into??? Heaps. Also what of those that don’t have access to their own transport think about it? Greg Russell Bulahdelah

REGARDING the recent stories on the Council Merger (News Of The Area edition 31 March 2016 ‘ Resolved to Support’). Then move Hawks Nest, Tea Gardens, Pindimar and Bundabah into Port Stephens. It makes perfect sense. The state government funds a couple of public jetties at Pindimar, North Arm Cove and Bundabah instantly connecting the region to the real world and out of the Great Lakes Council (GLC) 3rd world. It will be interesting when Great Lakes (owner of some

thousand or so non urban lots) has to start paying rates to Port Stephens Council. Good bye to $3 million or so in rates per year. You can almost hear the sudden staggering about face from GLC demanding action on non urban land. Good news for several councillors this week with their RU2 lots over 100 acres now getting dual occupancy approval. Approved by themselves… Len Roberts included... Nice work. 95th Annual, was one of the finest By Dave BRAZIER THE 95th Annual Stroud Show was well and truly in full swing when Myall Coast News OF The Area cruised into Stroud Showgrounds on 1 April just before lunch time. Despite being a city boy, I’m no stranger to Country spirit and hospitality, and it was instantly evident that the Stroud Show is indeed for everyone and anyone. You didn’t have to be a horse lover, stockman or cowboy, what was on offer was a good time for anyone and I walked away feeling like I had just that. The pride and immense loyalty to their horses was beaming from many a competitors face as they took on some wary stock in the Camp Draft, trying to beat some intense times as the mild dust flew blissfully in the mild breeze across the main arena just adjacent to the Horse Breeding Class Competition. An entrant in this years Horse Breeding Class was Erin George from Seaham, who was showing

off ‘Namoi Valley Delilah’, a 6 year old Welsh Pony of who was just as eager to say G’day to me as I was to her. Speaking with News Of The Area, Erin said, “This is the first time I’ve competed and showed Delilah. I’m a little bit nervous but I’m sure she won’t let me down.” “I lent her to some friends before who have showed her on my behalf and they went really well, so I’m hoping I can enjoy some success at this years Stroud Show myself.” she said. It wasn’t just all horse action on the opening day of the Stroud Show, Volunteer groups like the Rural Fire Service and SES were on hand to offer advice to anyone of fire hazards and protection and also what to do in the event of a storm. News Of The Area sat in on a demonstration from Greg and Sandy Snape, from Pindimar, who were representing the State Emergency Service at the show, as they discussed various topics related to storms to a collection of students

from Stroud Public School. Greg Snape asked several questions to the enthusiastic and polite group of students about what they would do in a storm situation, advised them to keep clear of trees and very general but essential information that I’m sure the kids will remember clearly by the way Greg delivered his demonstration. Stalls were plenty and provided a good variety of items for those that wanted a break from the ringside activities. Speaking with News Of The Area, Secretary of the Stroud Show Association, Colin Ince said, “We are positive the 95th Annual Stroud Show will be one of the finest. The weather is perfect, the interest is large and I’m sure our Saturday crowds of about 3500 people will increase this year.” “The interest and roll up of competitors and visitors so far today is very impressive, tomorrow is going to be even bigger, this will help us continue to grow even more in the future,” he said.

I REFER to “Sand an ongoing issue for beach front homes” (News Of The Area 24 March 2016). The recent history of the area most affected by sand blow needs some explaining. In September 2014, a severe storm affected Winda Woppa’s Boulevarde. Refer to News Of The Area, edition 11 September 2014. Adding to the News Of The Area’s report here is what else happened that month. It was the usual hot spot between Kururma and Guya Streets that was severely affected. Erosion occurred right back to the edge of the road and slightly in to it. But east of Guya Street, for a length of about 500 metres all of the existing vegetation and about half of the adjacent beach remained completely unaffected. There were vast sections of mature dune vegetation as thick as what currently exists west of

Kururma Street . Including tall old banksias, ti tree and even eucalypts. About ten days after the September 2014 storm and in calm weather, all of that vegetation except for one eucalypt was bulldozed. And the stabilizing roots dug up. Council never explained why. Or if they did, no one can understand why. Ever since then, that section has been the area worst affected by unstable sand regularly smothering the road and residents yards. It did not happen while there was vegetation there. Just as it does not happen now in the existing vegetated area west of Kururma. It appears people are responsible for the emergence of this problem. Not mother nature and certainly not the September 2014 or April 2015 storms. Christian Patteson Hawks Nest

Energy save?

Dear News Of The Area,

THE National Party’s Myall Lakes MP, Mr Stephen Bromhead has had a couple of articles in the local paper and newsletters recently, on how, we the residents of Great Lakes can save on our Energy (Electricity) Bills. In the Myall Coast Messenger’s newsletter, dated 11/3/16, he informs us on, the management of mart meters and their use with Solar/batteries, so we can save money on our bills. In the News Of The Area newspaper dated 31/3/16, he offers more advice on how Seniors can make savings on their Electricity and Gas. 18 months ago,the NSW Liberal and National Party promoted a $313 reduction for consumers in Essential Energy areas, which is the Great Lakes region. This reduction had been awarded by, I believe by, IPART. Then, with the proposed lease of the Poles and Wires, the NSW Government realised, that, the sale

price (bottom line) would be improved if this saving was eliminated. The NSW National Liberal Party, then decided to oppose this reduction and took the Australian Energy Regulator to court. The Australian Competition Tribunal overturned this reduction earlier this year, which pleased the Government. This certainly was not mentioned in the newspaper by our member, Mr Stephen Bromhead, who is advising us on how to save on our Electricity Bills. Currently, the Australian Energy Regulator is appealing to have the decision overturned, so we the residents of Great Lakes can enjoy an average reduction of $313 per year. But, don’t hold your breath, because the NSW Liberal National Party is still in the process of leasing the Poles and Wires. This challenge in the court is being kept very quiet. NSW Gov should sort out the rest Dear News Of The Area, CONFLICTING reports are being presented to ratepayers concerning a State Government’s proposal for an amalgamation of Great Lakes Council (GLC) with Gloucester and Greater Taree councils. GLC appear to have agreed to the proposal, on terms yet to be specified, though initially they declared their preference to stay independent. There is strong evidence that, whilst Council still prefer to stand alone, their latest position is an ambit claim to ensure, that in the event of a forced amalgamation, GLC personnel are given priority in the establishment of a new Mega council. Though some may have minor complaints, I agree that their performance based on previous records deserves respect. On that point consider that in the survey of all NSW councils, in the Mid-North Coast region, only Great Lakes and Port Macquarie-Hastings were found “fit for the future”. Both councils met the scale, capacity and financial criteria overall to stand alone as independent entities. Macquarie-Hastings was left to “stand-alone”

Thursday, 7 April, 2016

but GLC were given the options to stand-alone or merge with Gloucester. GLC undertook a business case for a merger with Gloucester but considered it provided no financial benefit. Subsequently the state government proposed a merger of GLC with both Gloucester and Taree. Consider, that according to the last ratings of Councils by TCorp (a division of NSW treasury), only 2 councils out of 152 were given the lowest ratings for both Financial Sustainability, “Very Weak” and Outlook “Negative”. Guess who? Yes Taree and Gloucester. The minister’s positive financial estimates for the Mega Councils future lack detail and seem to grossly underestimate the costs required to make it viable. My attitude is quite clear “Better the Devil you know than the one you don’t”. I will be advocating for GLC to be left to stand alone. The State Government can appoint an administrator to sort out Gloucester and Taree rather than risk Great Lakes to a very uncertain future. Peter Pritchard Tea Gardens

Recycled water is operational at Myall Park brings mixed opinions Dear News Of The Area,

COULD you please publish my letter in response to your article “Recycled Water is Operational”published 31/3/16. To clarify a few issues in last weeks article “Recycled Water is Operational” (News Of The Area, 31 March 2016), the article fails to mention that Recycled Sewage Irrigation is being simultaneously released to Providence Bay Park, where irrigation

will take place amongst picnic tables, barbecue facilities and children’s play equipment which in Australian water recycling guidelines, “Recycled water should not come into contact with”. On Myall Park the new low throw, no misting sprinklers photographed has spray mist as high as the goal posts drifting into the homes with the predominant northeast breeze, some sprays positioned just metres from houses, leaving residents

homes totally exposed. The scheme is clearly unsuitable and this is unacceptable. Mid Coast Water Agenda 20/10/15 state’s, “NSW Heath reinforced the position that recycled water spray drifting towards neighbouring residences from the irrigation system at Myall Park would be unacceptable “. What is also disturbing is that Mid Coast Water staff have been advising residents that the grade proposed is also being

used in residential estates. I have learnt from NSW Health that this is incorrect. The grade is not for domestic use and is in fact of a lower health grade, not suitable to come in contact with residents or their homes. The groundwater irrigation that has been used on Myall Park for 40 years is already a deemed alternate water supply option with no health risks. Stuart Daniel Hawks Nest

How about a Bath Tub Race? Dear News Of The Area,

I MIGRATED to Australia a long time ago from West Sussex in the UK. I was then working for a local company which participated with great enthusiasm in the annual Arundel Bath Tub Race. Since its inception, this event had grown to become very big by the time I joined the company. Hundreds of people and many local companies participated in the construction and the racing

of the boats. The rules were simple, the main task being to build a boat around an old bath tub which could carry two or more people. The bath only had to be in contact with the water and the objective was to race the boat a few kilometres down the river using manpower only. There were, I think, three categories of entrant - Formula 1, Classic and Original. Needless to say, many of the entrants were ramshackle affairs,

MyallCoastNews.com.au

managing only a few metres or even sinking on the start line. Others took the proceedings very seriously and worked for months ahead to beat the competition. The whole event was highly entertaining. It drew thousands of spectators from around the region and raised significant sums for charity, including the RNLI so safety had to be assured! I was curious to know if the race had survived the years since I left England. It seems it is still going

despite some ups and downs in its history - see www.arundelbathrace.co.uk. I'm mentioning this because the River Arun is not dissimilar to our own Myall River and I feel that a similar event could be considered for our river. A rigorous feasibility study would be necessary I guess, but it might be the kind of event that brings a crowd to Tea Gardens. Tony Hann North Arm Cove

ATTIRE: Daryl Martin, “dressed to kill” as a Tiger, enjoying the “footy” flavour during the Wednesday Nominated Triples.

Nominated triples takes on favourite footy team wear BOWLS Tea Gardens Men’s Bowling Club By The JAFFA

30 MARCH: In a fine, warm and windy day, the usual Wednesday Nominated Triples competition took on a different format today with players turning out in the colours of their favourite football team. Most supported clubs in the NRL competition but there were some supporting Rugby and Soccer as well. I noticed Wallaby and All-Black shirts and one player in particular caught my eye in a fetching black number, supposedly supporting the Rabbitoes but looking very much like the New Zealand ladies basketball team, the Silver Ferns! Cock-of-the-walk though has to go to evergreen Tiger supporter, Daryl Martin, who had on the full Tiger’s

regalia. Scores for the day were very respectable with Vic Garlick, Col Fossey and Bill Heylbut taking third place with +22. In second place, on +28 were Henk Faber, Col Amos and David Rimmer. Taking home the money in first place on +31 were; Warren Gooley, Graeme Watkins and Noel Jackson. Well done! In Round 6 of the Newcastle District Mid-Week Pennant competition, the Pelican Pest Control Mighty Dolphins Grade 4 team played host today to a side from Hamilton North. The Dolphins were out seeking revenge for the “touch-up” they were given by Hamilton North in an early round on a lifeless green at their Club. Revenge was sweet with the Dolphins giving them a taste of what they can do on a quick synthetic green. Tea Gardens won two of the three matches with the

Sean Mearrick combination running riot winning 32-9 and Danny Johnson side also winning handsomely 27-12. The remaining game was hard-fought with Richard Lee’s team going down 11-22. Overall a very satisfying day with the Master Board reading Tea Gardens 70, Hamilton North 43. Tea Gardens are currently in second place in the competition. They next play Fingal Bay at Fingal Bay. 1 April: In beautiful sunshine, a terrific field of 24 bowlers contested the Friday Jackpot Pairs today. Despite Henk Faber and Terry Eyles having a great +21 win with the highest margin, the actual winner was the team on the lowest margin, Bill Haylbut and Luke Gliwa. They had +3. Six teams contested the Jackpot draw however it was not won. 2 April: Round 4 of the Newcastle District Pennant

competition was played today with the Pelican Pest Control Dolphins Grade 4 and Grade 6 sides competing at home. Grade 3 played away at Adamstown and Grade 7 travelled to Nelson Bay. The away games are always going to be tough with home sides enjoying conditions they are very familiar with. Such was the case today with the Dolphins Grade 3 side losing at Adamstown 52-62 and the Dolphins Grade 7 side being defeated at Nelson Bay 43-74. In the home games; Grade 4 lost to Mayfield 5477 and the one saving grace for the day was a great win to the Dolphins Grade 6 side defeating Bar Beach 73-51. A highlight of this game was the wins by the Dave Austin four, winning their match 40-11, and the Doug Naylor team winning 26-11. Round 5 will see Grade 3 play away at Nelson Bay, Grade 4 will play Karuah

at home, Grade 6 will play Tomago at home and Grade 7 will play away at Fingal Bay. 3 April: In Sunday Introduction to Bowls, 26 players enjoyed the friendship and the fun with Kingsley Jolliffe, Harry Hauben and Dennis Wilberforce the winners on the day. The “lucky losers” were Kathy Stone, Lynda Richards and Stewart Sturrock. Thank you to the coach, Kathy Rimmer and cooks, John McJannett and Barry Goode.

The first round of the Club Major Pairs was played today with a great field of 16 teams competing for the title with play taking place on both greens . There are some “crack” teams entered this year so the competition will get fierce as it continues over the weeks ahead. The first round winners were Col Amos and Dave

Paul Syron and Ben Brown were too strong for Neil Kibble and Dennis Ashbridge, winning 26-8. Bob Skewes and Bill Thrift managed a narrow win over David Garcia and Bob Weir, 17-15. Sean Mearrick and Richard Lee defeated Peter Gurney and Leigh Hunt, 31-9 and Daryl Martin and Ron James won 33-9 over Vic Garlick and Henk Faber. THE last two outings held by the Myall Lakes Aquatic Club (MLAC) were probably the most enjoyable for some time thanks to Commodore Rod and his committee. The Korsmans venue at the end of February was busy with a tender expedition up the picturesque Boolambayte

Creek, a spit roast dinner and then on Sunday a kayaking adventure. Beautiful weather at Easter made conditions ideal for a progressive boating tour around the lakes. We set out from Engel’s Wharf on Friday, then onto Mungo for lunch before motoring up to Professor’s Cove for the night. SPECIAL thanks goes out to the Narrabeen RSL social fishing club for attending the annual inter-club social fishing challenge. The weather was at it’s best and so was the angling. The 2016 fishing challenge was the 13th year of the annual event and the score was six all before this event. Well who won you ask? Hooray for Hawks Nest Golf Club Social Club! Hawks Nest (2247.3) narrowly defeated Narrabeen (2020.9) to take the lead 7 6. “We’ll be back” a Narrabeen angler was quoted as saying. It was a great social fishing outing and participants were

thoroughly excited with the overall fish caught, weather and general good company from all. The overall winner and mens champion for the Hawks Nest V’s Narrabeen social fishing competition was Steve Cook (Hawks Nest), scoring 374.9 points. He caught snapper, goatfish, teraglin, flathead, morwong and samson fish. Great angling from Steve’s first social competition. The mens runner up was Robert Bartlett (Hawks Nest) scoring 147.2 points. The winner for the ladies division was Michelle Cole (Hawks Nest) scoring 138 points. Michelle caught an array of species including hairtail, bream, flathead and tailor. The ladies runner up was Karen Glynn (Hawks Nest) scoring 114.4 points. Great angling, great weather and great company, what a recipe for success!

The team travels to Forster next Saturday for what will be a hard game to win but I am sure they will all give there best on the day.

Thanks you to everybody who joined in the fun of the day. Results from Major Singles so far: Margaret Lowe defeated Faye Mason. Freda Laughton defeated Margaret Lowe. Karuah Roos Rugby League By Sonja EVANS

THE Roo’s started the season with a stiff test travelling to Stockton on a hot Sunday afternoon. Making matters worse the Roo’s were low on players and struggling to hold the ball early in the first half with Stockton running in a few quick tries. The score was 12/0 when the Roo’s got their first opportunity with the ball in which they capitalised with a nice backline movement finished off by Mitchell O’Bryan #4 scoring close to the uprights. Which Sam Croese #6 easily converted taking the score to 12/6 Sharks way. The Roo’s got their second touch of the ball twenty mintues into the half showing a lot of potential with another try from a good pass from Dwayne Fleming #9 to Jason Stewart #11 who scored under the posts. Sam Croese converted taking the score to 30/12 Sharks way. A lot of errors and penalty’s led to the half time score Stockton 36 Karuah 12. The Roo’s regrouped at half time and although struggling they showed a lot of heart and started the second half with intensity. Having the Stockton Sharks on the back foot and good kick pressure from Ryan Saunders #12 caused a risky pass which was intercepted by the Roo’s #7 Daniel Evans who scored a run away try from the halfway line. Sam converted the try taking the score to 36/18. The Roo’s started their next set on the front foot, starting to get on top of the game when Sam Croese was unfortunately collected in a high tackle which landed him hard on the cricket pitch. The game was called off as an ambulance was called for Sam as a precaution. He was later cleared of any serious injury, he has a bad concussion. Final score 36/18 Stockton’s way. The Roo’s take on Abermain @ Howe Park next Saturday kick off 2pm. Game day sponsor is Karuah Working Together.

Bidgood wins club monthly bash FISHING

By Daniel SAHYOUN BULAHDELAH Fishing Club held their monthly competition last weekend. Unlike previous club competitions this outing was held as a free for all with no set boundaries, bringing in a total of 211 fish. The winners in the Men’s and Women’s Biggest Fish categories was husband and wife team Grant and Angela Bidgood, with 27 and 16 fish caught respectively. Grace McRae took out the subjunior category, while both the New Biggest Species and Mystery Fish sections were won by Darren Carrall. The overall competition winner was Grant Bidgood with 210 points. Fishing Club President Darren Carrall said the weekend outing had much better conditions than last month’s competition. “The weather was perfect for the event with crystal clear water and there was plenty of tailor around during the weekend,” Mr Carrall said. “It was good to have a few new members participate in this outing.” Mr Carrall encourages anyone with an interest in fishing to join the club, no matter how old they are, what they do or where they’re from. The next outing will be held from 29 April to 1 May at Mungo Brush.

Some tough games played BOWLS

Tea Gardens Women’s Bowling Club By Lily SMITH

TUESDAY, 29 March, the Pennant season continues. All the Grade 2 and Grade 3 sides had a bye today. The Grade 4 side played away at New Lambton, and unfortunately went down. In that side, Wendy Brand’s team lost with a score of 7 – 21, while Loretta Baker’s team went down with a score of 19 – 21. Overall score was a win to New Lambton 48 – 27. Better luck to Tea Gardens when they meet New Lambton on our home ground. Social Bowls: Most of our Grade 2 side and all of our Grade 3 side turned out for a practice game on the grass green The Home Competition was once again attended with a very small field of 5 bowlers. One game of triples was played with a swinger. The winner of that game were Jann Kuzmic, (swinger), Dorothy Thompson and Wilma Drake. The overall winners for the day with the highest score were Carol Hayden, Bev Rhodes, Lily Smith and Lynne Green.
