When was the decision made to pull them down and why?

FROM Page 1 This came as a shock to the parents of cricket players and the coaches of the Bulahdelah Milo Cricket Team who use these nets regularly for cricket practice. Dave Saul, an executive member of Bulahdelah Chamber of Commerce, explained that the issue of the cricket nets had been brought up a number of times by members of the community due to the state of repair needed. “Council had been approached up to three times about the issue of fixing the cricket nets and an official letter was about to be written but without any consultation the nets were pulled down. “We request that the cricket nets be re-instated as soon as possible,” stated Dave. Andrew Staniland, the Manager of Parks and Recreation, from the Great Lakes Council spoke extensively about the issue. Myall Coast News asked the

question, when was the decision made by council to pull down the cricket nets and what was the reasoning behind it and what consultation took place? “Council undertakes regular asset checks on all of its structures. “During the most recent inspection, the cricket nets were deemed a safety hazard. “Several components of the structure and the surface were in a condition that could result in an injury and as such the structure was deemed unsafe and removed. “When possible Council consults with our community but where a safety issue is paramount, it will be attended to as soon as possible. “We are aware that the Milo Cricket team has commenced in the area, however we believe they utilise portable equipment to train smaller children in cricket and the nature of the activity does involve the use of hard surfaces (for safety reasons).” In response to the question about new cricket nets being

installed and a pitch maintained to meet the demands of the summer 2015-2016 cricket season and the future of funding for sports facilities in Bulahdelah, Andrew Staniland stated the following: “We will be happy to talk to any Bulahdelah sporting club about their needs and we will assist them wherever possible to access sporting grants to improve their facilities where needed. “We invite any new clubs to immediately contact us to discuss their needs.” “Council’s funding for recreational facilities is spread around the Great Lakes area and we work with feedback received from each community to try to provide the facilities most requested by each community. “The Bulahdelah community has not raised any issues with us regarding sporting facilities to date, however we welcome discussions with any of Bulahdelah’s sporting clubs.”

“The Bulahdelah sporting community have been responding to the Council’s action of pulling down the cricket nets. Letters, emails and phonecalls to Council and to Stephen Bromhead requesting that cricket nets be reinstated were sent by a number of concerned parents, including Justine Plummer. “I have two sons who play cricket and I have been committed to driving them to Karuah and further to play for their teams but they practice here at the Bulahdelah sports fields so the loss of the cricket nets disadvantages them.” Brad Allen, father of Tom Allen, who plays state level cricket, explains to Myall Coast News, “My sons have consistently practiced at Bulahdelah every afternoon during the cricket season and it has meant that Tom has advanced to the level he is at today. The removal of the cricket nets, without giving us a chance to organise how to fix them, has left us at a loss.”

NEW trees recently planted along the waterfront on Marine Drive that has been rejuvenated by Great Lakes Council, are being protected from the elements and human interference with thanks to the team from the Tea Gardens Mens Shed (TGMS). Great Lakes Council supplied the building materials to the members of the Tea Gardens Mens Shed, who constructed these sturdy frames that now surround the new trees. Construction took place at the TGMS which is located at the old Tip Shop in the Tea Gardens Industrial Estate. Meeting on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8.30am to 2pm, the members have professionally built these frames from quality timbers which were later installed by Great Lakes Council Staff. Speaking with Myall Coast News, member Grant Hickey said, “It gives everyone such a boost to be able to assist the

Members of the TGMS were present at the Myall River Festival last Saturday, hosting a stall and proudly displaying various products they have made and are still in the process of producing to assist the local

KATE Washington is urging the NSW Government to bring work back to the Hunter’s proud shipbuilding industry. Following a request for tenders from Transport for NSW, local shipbuilding company, Forgacs, hopes to secure work in the building of pontoons for the Barangaroo Ferry Hub project. If successful, Forgacs estimates that the project will be enough to employ 50 workers for 12 months and provide a much needed shot in the arm. Due to rounds of redundancies, the Tomago shipbuilder has seen its workforce dwindle from 960 workers just three years ago, down to less than 100 today. This tender could prove to be a watershed moment for a group that has yet more scheduled redundancies on the way. Ms Washington said, “From an industry and local employment perspective, it is critical that Forgacs remains in operation.” Ms Washington said, “I urge the NSW government to do all that it can to support local jobs and our local shipbuilding industry.”

The appointment is welcome news for families in the Registry’s catchment area – which extends from the Central Coast in the south, to Port Macquarie / Kempsey in the north, and out to Mudgee in the west – who have been suffering from long delays in the Court system. It is also a relief for the over-worked Judges Terry and Myers, who, since Judge Coakes’ retirement in June 2015, have been required to manage the workload of 3 judges in what is often cited as to the busiest registry in the country.

EVEN before the dust settles from successfully performing the two plays ‘He Said And She Said’, and ‘The Misused Mill Girl,’ Myall Coast Entertainers (MCE) are ready to plan for their next play. Play reading sessions will be conducted to find the next play to perform. The Committee decided that their next production would be a full-length play, probably a comedy and not a radio play. Myall Coast News has been told that everyone is invited to come along and read a part or two and help determine future plays, at 7pm Wednesday 11 November at Tea Gardens Uniting Church hall, at 12.00pm Myall Street. No experience is required and newcomers are most welcome. You may even wish to suggest a comedy play for MCE

WE are absolutely delighted to be amongst 37% of NSW Councils deemed ‘fit for the future’ last month in the NSW Government’s IPART Report. We were on the only Council on the MidNorth Coast deemed fit AND who met all five of the criteria required. This really is an endorsement that we are ‘getting it right’ for our ratepayers - and this achievement has only come because we have worked hard on our community partnerships and we have listened to you, our ratepayers, when you have told us your priorities.

Community really does give a Gonski By Rachel REITSMA NATIONAL Gonski Week was held this week from 26 October - 1 November. The teachers from Bulahdelah Central School held a promotional BBQ on Wednesday 28 October to discuss what Gonski funding is all about and how parents and the community can support it. Gonski funding began in 2014 after the Independent Gonski Review warned too many children were missing out on the education they needed due to a lack of resources. The review was headed by respected businessman, David Gonski, and stated that Australia was under-investing in education and not delivering funds to where it was needed

most. So under the Gonski plan, all schools are funded according to the individual needs of their students and what is required to educate them to a high level. Schools can then use the additional resources to better meet the individual needs of the students. The reason that Gonski week is held, is to make the community aware of Gonski funding and the problem of the Federal Coalition Government refusing to honour, in full, the Gonski agreements that were signed by four states and the ACT. The Government wants to tear up the agreements and in 2017 stop delivering to all state governments the needs-based Gonski funding. NSW Education Minister

q DISCUSSING: Daniel Sayhoun, John Sayhoun, Vanessa Shultz, Hannah Lawton, Pam Brewer, Tim Cooper, and Principal Don Hudson at the Gonski BBQ. Adrian Piccoli states on the www.igiveagonski.com.au website, “The Commonwealth government’s budget decision is more than a breach of a commitment with the NSW government, it is a breach of faith with all school students in

the state.” Hannah Lawton is a teacher at Bulahdelah Central School and is passionate about what Gonski funding can provide. “Gonski engages students; it means better teaching, heightened achievement, improved levels of literacy

and numeracy and it helps disadvantaged kids,” explains Hannah. Hannah also pointed out that Bulahdelah Central School has a tutorial centre, two full time positions for teacher aides and one office staff position funded by Gonski.

q ACTION: Dale from the Ice Cream Shop shows his style.

MARINE Drive at Tea Gardens was overflowing with entertainment, food, a variety of specialty stalls and of course also included a tonne of happy faces amongst all the action. The 2015 Myall River Festival held last Saturday was a huge success drawing large crowds for most of the day. Speaking with Myall Coast News, Mark McCormick from Myall Beans and Leaves, and who is also President of the Myall Coast Chamber of Commerce, said, “It has been a fantastic day so far. The crowds arrived early and appear to have stayed here for many hours which is really great to see.” “I have been hearing some really positive comments from visitors and seeing plenty of happy faces, so I’d say the efforts of all

those involved organising today have been very worthwhile,” he said. The water obstacle course set up opposite the Hook & Cook takeaway shop was a terrific addition this year, with many people trying their best to complete the slippery aquatic course in the quickest time to try and secure the $1000 prize money offered. The first competitor who set the standard for fellow competitors to beat was Dale from the Ice Cream Shack. He jumped, slid, swam, pulled, pushed and ultimately muscelled his way around the course, coming a cropper on more than one occasion but with the $1000 in mind and to his credit, Dale just kept on going until he finished his heat. Stalls were spread from just

Pelican poo is more complex than thought Dave BRAZIER talks with Progress President, Trevor Jennings

FOLLOWING a recent article where I again highlighted the issues of Pelicans defecating on the walkway along Singing Bridge at Tea Gardens, it appears a recent decision by Great Lakes Council will fix all the associated problems that includes not only reducing the mess left by the pelicans, but of course the issue of the street lights being turned over the water and not the bridge. Speaking with Myall Coast News, Trevor Jennings, from the Progress Association, has highlighted a few facts and the background of the pelicans on Singing Bridge. Trevor said, “I’m concerned about the mis-information being distributed within the community regarding the roosting of pelicans on the Singing Bridge.” “I’m also very concerned about the undemocratic process that Great Lakes Council has adopted when determining the future of pelicans on the bridge,” he said. “So, I’ll set out the background of this issue as I understand it.” “Most residents who have

q

resided here for at least ten years would know that spikes were installed on the light fittings to prevent roosting pelicans from defecating on the footpath and roadway.” “This was a great relief for most residents who had the misfortune to be underneath a pelican at its ablution time, and the spikes certainly ensured the bridge surface was kept fairly clean,” said Mr Jennings. “More recently, Essential Energy undertook

maintenance of the street lights and, for whatever reason, they didn’t reinstate the spikes. This is when the pelican

excrement became a traffic and pedestrian safety issue. Then, during the severe storms that occurred in April this year, the light fittings were blown in every possible direction, with some protruding over the water and others aligned over the road and footpath.” “After much discussion about this issue, the Progress Association acknowledged that the visual attraction of pelicans on the light fittings had significant tourism potential which could only be a good thing for the businesses, and the future vitality, of our area. As a consequence of those discussions, the Association recommended to Council that some way be found to encourage the presence of pelicans on the bridge without creating a safety issue, possibly by the installation of dual arm fittings, with the arm housing the light over the road having spikes, and the arm over the water being available for roosting pelicans.” “To his credit, Ron Hartley at Council had the Association’s suggestion investigated

fittings and spikes. Who possibly would care if the pelicans defecated over the river, as they do wherever there is water. Essential Energy have since appraised Council’s suggestion of the lights being rotated over the water and agreement has been reached.” “Just when it seemed that commonsense had prevailed, Great Lakes Councillors intervened on Tuesday 27 October and resolved that the light fittings be reinstated over the roadway, with spikes. “It appears that no consideration was given to the many hours of research and investigation that had been undertaken into alternative approaches by Council staff and community representatives.” Councillor Len Roberts’ response has been to refer to a few letters of

and he engaged a street lighting consultant. The consultant determined that there would still be adequate lighting of the road and footpath if the lights were rotated out over the water, negating the need for dual arm

complaint (probably from illinformed residents) and to reveal a paranoia about traffic safety, regardless of the lighting

consultant’s report about adequate street lighting, and the fact that pelicans will be roosting metres away from the edge of the bridge. To those of us with vision, it seems like a great compromise and a no-brainer.” “As a volunteer at the Tea Gardens Visitor Information Centre, I am particularly aware of the importance of our local wildlife for tourism. One only has to look around at advertising material for our two towns to notice the presence of pelicans, some photos even showcasing pelicans on the light fittings on the bridge,” he said. So, are the pelicans that like to roost on Singing Bridge our friends or our foes? According to Mr Jennings most residents say the former, and Great Lakes Council says the latter. “Let’s hope that Council sees the folly of their decision.” It appears that pelican excrement has hit the fan and blurred the Councillor’s vision,” he said.

THE Foreshore Reference Group met with Council on Monday 19 October and strongly expressed their view that the progress in achieving a satisfactory outcome was non-existent and that the community was rapidly losing faith in both the Foreshore Group and Council. Whilst the removal of the coral trees had been reluctantly accepted, the promise of replacement trees and shelters had not progressed and we are now rapidly approaching the holiday season and extreme temperatures. Users of the foreshore would be severely affected should the trees be removed and no shelters in place. We were also critical over the condition of the ferry wharf deck despite promises the new decking was a priority and again, nothing had been done. The Group can now report with some authority that the following undertakings have been agreed and that finality for most will be achieved by mid -December. The two replacement trees being acclimatised by Woodward’s Nursery have been planted. They are surrounded by

tree protectors and eventually will have seating arrangements around the trunks. The seating is on order from the Men’s shed. The nursery is still trying to locate two more mature trees to replace the coral and hibiscus trees which are still scheduled to be removed in the near future. Their imminent removal was questioned in view of the rapidly approaching summer, however in Council’s defence, removal has been necessitated by two individual arborist reports identifying the trees as potential hazards and the risk of accidents was high. Shelter structures modelled on a wave configuration have been selected and at least four will be built along the foreshore. Orders are in the hands of Council purchasing. We agreed that the trees were not to be removed until the shelters have been installed. The ferry wharf deck has progressed to the selection and ordering of timbers and work is expected to be undertaken in the near future. A shelter structure and location is yet to be finalised and construction will be carried out subsequent to the repairs. We have identified the need

for additional garbage bins to be located west toward the boat ramp and will be taken up with the respective Council Department. Andrew Staniland as managerofParksandRecreation for Great Lakes Council has undertaken to accept these tasks as a number one priority and we expect these tasks to be completed within this time schedule. A suggestion has been made to decorate the dull and ugly telegraph poles along the waterfront, which Country Energy are indicating no sign of removal. Pole decoration has been adopted by a number of communities along the north coast. The themes are topical to each community and care taken to use suitable light fast paints. There seems to be a general agreement amongst the community that we undertake a project to select two poles along the foreshore and have a motif painted on each as a forerunner to including the length of Marine Drive. Application needs to be made to Country Energy and that will be undertaken by the Foreshore Group.

Putting hands into clay

Dear News Of The Area,

q POTTERS: Val Ransom, Francis McLean, Elizabeth Bennett, Maryanne Durrant, Bruce Sands, Lesley Jones, Heather Miller.

THE Potters on Friday mornings at the Myall Coast Arts and Craft Centre have a wonderful time where they really enjoy putting their hands into a block of clay and coming up with some beautiful pieces of pottery. Maybe it could be a lovely bowl to put fruit in or a serving platter for cheese and crackers or just what ever comes to mind from the animal kingdom. One of the ladies in the group at present is attempting to create a replica of her Husband`s

pride and joy his motor bike, a very ambitious project but I have no doubt it will be accomplished. All in the group shows enthusiasm in what is going on, not just their own work but everyone`s. The photo shows some of the work the pottery group have made in past weeks. Val Ransom, the group coordinator and teacher, is always ready to give advice, help when asked or needed and of course a great deal of encouragement. The pottery group meet every Friday morning

from 10am to 12noon. You would be most welcome if you wish to attend. The Myall Community Art and Craft Show will once again be on in January 2016. Dates are Friday 8th January, Saturday 9th January and Sunday 10th January. Times 9.30am to 4.30pm. each day. The Craft Centre is located at 245 Myall Street - behind the Visitors Information Centre - Visitors are always welcome.

to new ladies Man’s best medicine Welcome Over 60’s lunch group very popular Dear News Of The Area,

Dear News Of The Area, WALKING is Man’s Best Medicine Attributed to Hippocrates is the quote, “walking is man’s best medicine.” As it was written such a long time ago we can forgive him the fact that he did not include women in his observation. Just! If there is any truth in this adage, then it is no wonder that the Thursday Walkers Group are such a fit and healthy looking group. Our trip to Heatherbrae to the Hunter Region Botanic Gardens may not have been one of the most taxing walks but it was certainly pleasant. And it is very therapeutic to occasionally meander along well maintained tracks for

Water board letter Dear News Of The Area, IN Response to Letter to Editor, 22 October 2015 Myall Coast tNews, ‘Following the Sewer Dismay’, by Margaret-Ann Hainsworth. We wish to clarify a number of points made in the letter. Firstly, MidCoast Water and Great Lakes Council have committed to addressing the issue of spray drifting from the irrigation system at Myall Park. The irrigation system previously relied on domesticgrade sprinkler heads which has led to irrigation spray drifting outside of Myall Park to the neighbouring car park and residences on Yamba Street.

no other purpose than enjoyment. Some walkers also used this opportunity for self education and endeavored to read and remember the botanical names of a wide variety of plants. Sadly I can’t remember anything more than “cactus” and “tree”. Or should that be “cacti”? Do you think I can blame this upon my unhappy memory of school Latin classes? The Gardens were established in 1986 and are a credit to the loyal band of volunteers who design, develop and manage them. Next time you drive past on the Pacific Highway, consider rewarding yourself with a visit. Helen Watkins

The upgraded irrigation system will maintain the good health and amenity of the turf at Myall Park while improving the efficiency of the irrigation system and preventing spray drifting across Yamba Street. New low-throw, large droplet sprinkler heads will limit the production of spray, and wind sensors will automatically stop irrigation when wind speeds are above acceptable limits. The Hawks Nest recycled water scheme is compliant with the Australian Guidelines for Water Recycling (2006). These guidelines define the extent to which risks associated with recycled water use are to be controlled, including the level of removal of contaminants (viruses, bacteria and protozoa) and the physical controls applicable to irrigation practices. The recycled water produced at Hawks Nest is suitable for unrestricted use on public open spaces and has been used successfully at Hawks Nest golf course for two years.

WE welcomed four new ladies to our group on 23 October when our lunch was held at Ocean Breeze Restaurant in Tea Gardens. One lady, Stella Rogers, came all the way from Tanilba Bay and the other ladies from Tea Gardens were Susan

Burns, Jeanette Coppock and Judy Hughes and we hope they continue to attend each month. I would remind everyone our next lunch will be the last for the year and will be held at Benchmark at Hawks Nest on Friday, 27 November. I also would like to remind everyone who will be coming to please

telephone me on 4997 1614 or leave a message by mid-afternoon the day before. The venues like to have as close as possible to the numbers who will be attending as catering is rather difficult when larger groups arrive. Margaret McLaren Hawks Nest

MidCoast Water has over 10 years’ experience in providing safe and reliable recycled water for irrigation of farms and public open spaces. We recycle approximately 25% of the effluent volume from eleven of our sewage treatment plants and are currently in the process of delivering a recycled water scheme at Gloucester. In our latest community survey over 90% of respondents supported the use of recycled water for irrigation of public playing fields. It is also important to note that we have gained support for the operation of the scheme from the NSW EPA, NSW Department of Primary Industries Water and NSW Health. We have recognised the concerns expressed by residents in Yamba Street and have committed to implementing an acceptable solution. Darryl Hancock Acting General Manager MidCoast Water

The Novice Consistency Competition commenced today with only one game being played, between Francis Betar and Sue Gate. Francis got off to a good start and led for the whole match. Sue started to make a come-back but unfortunately it was just too late to make a difference to the final score. Francis won 153-107. Congratulations to both players for a great game. Francis will now play Karen McPhie in the second round on Thursday November 5th. Social Bowls: There were 28 Players on the green today, in two games of Triples and two games of Fours.

We had two visitors join us; June Stamp, from Turramurra and Helen Cashman from Yeronga in Queensland. June has visited us in the past. This was Helen’s first visit. Both ladies enjoyed their day with us and hope to repeat their visits in the future. The winners with the highest margin were; Carol Hayden, Bev Stephens, Rusty Sargeant and Maynie Roberts. Our Club would like to send get well wishes to our members who are feeling a bit under the weather. We hope to see you back on the green with us again soon.

OCTOBER 28 Three X Threes: After defeating all but one challenger, the wonderful run of the Club’s Three X Three Grade 3 team came to an end. In a gritty, near 5 hour match played at Stockton, the team lost by only 4 shots 5862. All three games could have gone the other way with mere millimetres being the difference between a win or

a loss. With a three shot lead going into the last end the Tea Gardens team of Neil,(Silky), Kibble, Col Amos and Dave Rimmer conceded a four, against the run of play, after leading for most of the match. They lost by one shot 1920. Heartbreaking! The Tea Gardens team of John Slater, Ron Green and Max Stephens also held a slight lead with 5 ends to play but a brilliant conversion by the opposing skip, on the 17th end, (from 1 down to 3 up) meant the difference at the end. CRICKET

MILO cricket has kicked off for the season with a great group of 5 and 6 year olds with a couple of older first timers to cricket. The idea is introduce the players to the game of cricket and teach the basic skills of the game. Another benefit is team work. With no registrations from Tea Gardens the group plays at Karuah each Saturday morning from 830 till approximately 10.30am. Parents are a great help to the group with varying contributions appreciated and it goes withourt saying that new players are always q welcome.
