RECOGNITION: Dales Stubbs with Ian Dunlop.

AT last week’s Australia Day Celebrations, long time Hawks Nest resident, Ian Dunlop was awarded Citizen of the Year within the Hawk Nest Tea Gardens communities. Dale Stubbs took the local Young Citizen of the Year Award. Mr Dunlop, a self-proclaimed, simple country Attorney from Singleton, moved to Hawks Nest in 1996 with his wife and became Treasurer of the Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Surf Life Saving Club (TGHNSLSC) two years later. Despite being a country boy, Ian has been involved in the surf club community most of his life, receiving his Bronze Medallion on 21 January 1950 in Tuncurry. When asked how he felt about the award, Ian told the Myall Coast News, “I got a bit of a surprise actually.” “Some of my surf club comrades knew about it, but none of them let a thing slip.” “Tea Gardens / Hawks Nest is a great community, with lots of really good people, doing really good things.” “I would have thought I would have been very low down on the list of possible recipients.”

HUNDREDS of students in the area returned to school last week, including 14 excited children who began their first year of school at Bulahdelah Central School. For their parents, the first day can be just as exciting and nerve racking for them as it is for their children. However, these emotions were doubled for some parents, with two sets of twins, Wendy and Lynelle Grills, and Noah and Joseph Whitby, beginning their school journey together. As with most children starting Kindergarten, identical twins Noah

and Joseph were up early on their first day, too excited to stay asleep. Wendy and Lynelle’s parents, Rebecca and Robert, said the girls were also looking forward to the new experiences that school would bring. “They couldn’t wait to come to school,” Rebecca said. “They will go from spending their time playing with dolls and building blocks together to sharing the same class.” While the girls are happy to be starting school and making friends with their classmates, they are just as excited about the more serious side of school. “It’s going to be fun, we get to

learn,” Wendy said. Lynelle totally agrees with her sister. Primary Deputy Principal Mrs Carol Wills, who welcomed the new students and parents, has had many years’ experience working with Kindergarten during her career. “The best thing about teaching Kindergarten is seeing how much they absorb so quickly,” Mrs Wills said. While starting school will bring many challenges for the children, Mrs Wills said there is a supportive staff and excellent resources to help the students with their educational journey.

“While it may have appeared that your application was submitted online, if you didn’t see a pop-up confirmation and receive an email notification, your application will have not have been received by Council,” said Council’s Community Development Coordinator, Lyndie Hepple. The grants are designed to fund projects that increase social participation and create a sense of community and place, and improve the quality of life for the Great Lakes community. Community groups can apply for up to $2,000. The funding aims to benefit local, not-for-profit organisations or groups, and will not extend to individuals. “The grants are to fund capacitybuilding community projects for an unmet need that preferably involve partnerships or collaboration with other groups,” said Lyndie Hepple. “More information on the specific criteria is detailed on the application form, and we are also available for advice if necessary.” “By extending the application period, we hope to give all groups seeking funding the opportunity to ensure we have their application.” The application form is available from Council’s website: www.greatlakes.nsw.gov.au/grants

Sea Turtle dead on beach

By Dave BRAZIER WITH an abundance of sea grass currently present around the Pindimar foreshore, turtle sightings are becoming more frequent for those out on light water craft, and can even be seen from shore bobbing their curious heads out of the water checking out the surroundings. The location and healthy grass beds have been a popular

area for turtles for many years, and it is a theory that young turtles spend their earliest and potentially most vulnerable years floating around the sea grass beds where they do little more than eat and grow. It is also home to some larger species of Sea Turtles, and it was quite saddening to see a rather large one found washed up and deceased on the Pindimar shoreline in early January.

This turtle had significant injuries to the top of its shell and back, and may have been dead for many days prior. It measured nearly 1.5m in length and 600mm in width – surely an ancient aged majestic creature of the sea. The injuries visible on the turtle looked to have been inflicted by a boat motor propeller or similar. Local residents had contacted

In light of the funding crisis experienced by the Federal Courts, and in particular the Family Court of Australia and the Federal Circuit Court of Australia, it would appear that an aim of this proposed legislation is to save money in relation to administration costs. Some commentators however have questioned whether savings will actually be made without cuts to services.

members from Hunter Wildlife Rescue who then advised the National Parks office at Port Stephens, whom later collected the turtle for investigation and later disposal. Speaking with Myall Coast News, Species Co-Ordinator for Hunter Wildlife Rescue Audrey Koosmen said, “When people find turtles washed up on the beach or shoreline their first reaction is to return the turtle to the water. That isn’t a requirement and should not be done.” “When a turtle beaches itself it’s for a good reason, something is wrong with them.” “If you find a turtle washed up it is recommended you wear gloves or use a towel when handling the turtle and be mindful that some species will bite,” she said. “It’s recommended that the turtle remain wet, by use of a wet towel and be kept in some shade until the National Parks staff arrive and take the turtle away,” said Ms Koosmen. If turtles are located the Port Stephens National Parks should be contacted to investigate or remove the turtle. NPWS can be contacted on 02 4984 8200. Carny quietly giving

ON Sunday 24 January, a group of males attended the Hawks Nest Golf Club to play golf. After their game they have attended the club house where they have been asked to leave due to their level of intoxication. Upon leaving one male in the group has decided to steal the wall hung fire extinguisher from the foyer before all have entered a vehicle and driven from the scene. The stealing was witnessed and the vehicles registration recorded. Unfortunately their was a digit incorrect and the vehicle could not be identified. Investigations revealed that a mobile phone number had been left whilst booking golf carts. As a result the male has been identified and is to be charged with the stealing of the fire extinguisher.

WE have certainly hit the ground running this year with many events and projects across our regions. COUNCIL WILL STAND ALONE

SINCE my last column, you will of course have heard the news that the NSW Government has decided Great Lakes Council will be allowed to stand alone. We welcome this decision, as we always believed it was the best way to deliver local government services to the Great Lakes into the future.

Boat back

IN July 2015, a 4.5m runabout was stolen from an address in Winston Hills in Sydney. On 20 January 2016, a 25 year old male from Bulahdelah attempted to register the boat in Tea Gardens. Police were called to the scene where they detained the male. The vessel was seized and returned to Tea Gardens Police Station. The male is to be dealt with possessing stolen goods and enquires are continuing to identify the persons who originally stole the boat in Sydney.

SMILES: Bruno Puglisi and Keegan Rees with their grip on the bar.

THERE are some people who quietly give back to the communities which support them and then carry on, without seeking any recognition.

One of them is Aaron Pink, of Pinks Carnival, which comes to Tuncurry every summer to entertain locals and visitors alike. Since 2008, Aaron has

extended an extremely generous offer to host participants from the disability program of Great Lakes Council’s Ageing and Disability Services in a free session at the Carnival. Please support the advertisers within the Myall Coast News Of The Area as they are bringing you your local news each week. And so a group of very excited people enjoyed the thrills and fun of the Carnival on Tuesday 19 January. In recent years, Aaron has also invited other disability services in the Great Lakes area and this year over 100 participants were his guests. Supported by staff and volunteers of services involved, a great evening

was had by all. Aaron and some of his staff walked, chatted and enjoyed time with the participants during the evening. After having a wonderful time on the various rides and winning soft cuddly toys on the sideshows, Aaron provided dagwood dogs, hot chips and drinks all round. The participants who attended all wish to thank Aaron of Pink’s Carnival and his wonderful staff for their time, generosity and a fantastic evening which will not be forgotten.

IT is always a great celebration of our nation and this year was no exception. The winners of the Great Lakes Australia Day Awards are very deserving of their Awards. We are all inspired by these people in our community, my congratulations to: Citizen of the Year Julie Brady; Young Citizen Ruby Keys; Special Mayors Award Michael Maytom; Sportsperson Dane Jeffery and the Arts Award winners - Nic Parsons, Stephanie Holm and the Lakeside Festival Incorporated. I also congratulate all of the nominees for Australia Day Awards - it is a very high commendation to be recognised in this way for your achievements. We were very fortunate to host our Australia Day Ambassador, Fr Chris Riley, he is an inspiration to all of us. WOMEN’S REFUGE DONATION

I’M extremely proud of all our Council staff. Instead of each employee receiving a very small token as a Christmas gift from Council each year, they elect to donate the whole amount to a worthwhile charity each year. This year they chose the Women’s Shelter and we handed over a cheque for $2,000 last week.

Public menace

ABOUT 3pm 26 January, a 35 year old male from Hawks Nest who was partaking in Australia Celebrations at ANZAC Park Tea Gardens became involved in a minor scuffle with other males before being encouraged to leave the park. As he left he has decided to cross Marine Drive in the direction of the Tea Gardens Pool, where he has then thrown a beer bottle into the entrance area of the pool causing the bottle to smash. The entrance was closed for twenty minutes until the remains were cleaned up. The male received a $450 infringement for smashing the bottle. This same male was caught drink driving and in September 2015 was disqualified from driving until March 2016. On 15 January police detected him driving despite his disqualification. He has now been charged with drive whilst disqualified.

Bad water

AT 5.30pm 20 January, police received numerous calls about a 25ft yacht near the mouth of the Myall River Tea Gardens. Police responded and located the vessel with the 52 year old male at the helm. He was breath tested which returned a reading well in excess of the legal allowable limit. He was placed under arrest and conveyed to the police station for a breath analysis which returned a reading of 0.215. He was subsequently charged with operate vessel with high range PCA and is to appear at Raymond Terrace Local Court in February.

MEMORIAL: Judy Cavenett and Moya Lovell unveil the memorial plaque.

In honour of Betty Bramble OAM By Daniel SAHYOUN BULAHDELAH Historical Society honoured the memory of founding member Mrs Betty Bramble OAM, at their annual Australia Day celebrations at the Bulahdelah

Courthouse Museum. Mrs Bramble, a much-loved and respected teacher, mentor and volunteer, worked tirelessly in the Bulahdelah and Bungwahl communities until her passing last year.

In recognition and appreciation of Mrs Bramble’s dedication and commitment to the Historical Society, a plaque was unveiled in a garden dedicated to her, by her cousins Judy Cavenett and Moya Lovell during the short

ceremony. Historical Society President Mr Kevin Carter said that the memorial was a fitting tribute to Mrs Bramble’s valuable contribution to the society which she was instrumental in establishing in 1982. “It was important to have a permanent reminder of the contribution she made,” Mr Cater said. “She had an amazing knowledge of the local area, especially the Myall Lakes district.” Following this moving tribute, the crowd enjoyed an Australia Day sausage sizzle, with a variety of salads, slices and damper served. Knowledge of all things Australian was tested in a round of trivia before the Courthouse gardens were transformed into an outdoor cinema. Seated under the stars, the crowd enjoyed a number of films about the Bulahdelah area from the society’s collection. These included the closing of Shultz’s General Store in 2001 and the Mock Debutante Ball from 1992. Mr Cater said the Great Lakes Council provided a small donation towards the successful event with all present enjoying the festivities in memory of Mrs Bramble. “We are grateful for Great Lakes Council’s donation which allowed the event to occur,” Mr Carter said.

Snake moves into the house

Four attackers to be charged

AT 6pm 26 January, police responded to a violent incident in Myall Street Tea Gardens which saw a 22 year old male from Pindimar assaulted in a cowardly attack by four males who were armed with a golf club, skateboard and shovel. The male received multiple injuries and was conveyed to hospital. Four males ranging in age from 17 to 20 have been identified. Charges are expected to be laid in coming days.

By Rebekka CUNNINGHAM

LATE last week, Goetz Schraer, a North Arm Cove resident, found a 2-metre-something Diamond Python living in a flower pot outside of his house. Over the course of a few days, the snake then moved from outside of the house, to inside the bathroom area underneath the sink. As the time went on, Mr Schraer continued to check on the snake and he caught it slithering from underneath the enclosure in the bathroom. “I suspect she may be looking for a safe place to lay eggs,” Mr Schraer told the Myall Coast News in a rather non-bothersome manner. Several hours later, he found that the snake had made its way to the corner of the room, curled up on the floor.

“I am sure that any selfrespecting snake would not like to be lying on cool tiles,” Mr Schraer said. “So I took a suitcase out of the cupboard and laid a towel down inside.” “Sure enough, the next morning I found it inside the suitcase.” “Quickly and carefully, I shut the lid and carried it outside to release it onto the lawn away from the house.” Despite trying to get rid of the snake, not long after letting her go outside, the snake found its way back to the flower pot once again outside of the house. When reporting on the incident, Mr Schraer seemed quite untroubled by the reptile. “The truth is, we like pythons around the house,” Mr Schraer said. “We live on 100 acres and pythons

30-year plan

Stop for a coffee rest

Public comment requested

By Daniel SAHYOUN LION’S Club Volunteers have handed out more than 5,000 cups of tea, coffee and biscuits at the Brown’s Flat Driver Reviver Station during the busy holiday period. Aimed at reducing driver fatigue, the program, operated by the Bulahdelah Lion’s Club in conjunction with the Roads and Maritime Services, encourages travellers to take regular breaks while driving. Lion’s Club volunteer Mrs Carol Tattersall, says the program helps save lives by encouraging people to stop, revive and survive. “Many people travel too long without a break,” she said. “We always encourage them to stop and have a rest and chat.” Mrs Tattersall, along with her husband Les, have been involved with the program for over five years. She said they have everyone from family groups to international backpackers stop at the busy site. “Many people who stop are tired from travelling,” Mrs Tattersall said. “We have had some drivers who were so fatigued they couldn’t even remember the last few kilometres they drove, and we have convinced them to take a break.” Along with helping to improve driver safety, Carol said meeting many interesting people while volunteering was a highlight.

q

CUPPA: Lion’s Club volunteers, Les and Carol Tattersall.

This has included this year’s Young Australian of the Year winners, Nic Marchesi and Lucas Patchett who stopped for a cup of tea in their bright orange laundry van which earned them this year’s honour. However, Carol said the success of the program is the result of a large team of volunteers, including coordinator, Mrs Judy Dixon. “In any holiday period, the entire club contributes to the program,” Mrs Dixon said. “This includes those who work in the van, to those who clean it, transport it and stock it each day.”

Many travellers donate to the Lion’s Club in appreciation of the service. Mrs Dixon said the donations will be put towards their latest projects, including a Community Activity Park. “Driver Reviver is a great project to be involved in as all the money goes back into the community,” Mrs Dixon said.

MIDCOAST Water’s 30 year plan Our Water Our Future provides a sustainable strategic plan for providing water related services to our community over the coming decades. Members of the community have until Friday 26 February to make a submission on the long term plan which sets out how the water and sewer authority will manage water resources into the future. Our Water Our Future details the issues MidCoast Water expects to face over the coming decades, the options and possible solutions, and it details the five key elements of planning for the future. These elements involve reducing water use, ensuring water quality, securing water supplies, recycling and effluent management, and servicing small villages. The release of the plan for public comment comes after six monthsofcommunityinvolvement and consultation. According to MidCoast Water’s chairperson, Cr Aled Hoggett. Our Water Our Future takes a long view, integrating expertise, experience and technology with community expectations to recalibrate MidCoast Water’s strategy for securing future water supplies. Our Water Our Future was developed in discussion with

regulators, local councils and the community, by a dedicated team of MidCoast Water staff supported by a broad based project reference group. “Our Water Our Future highlights the continued importance of water conservation solutions such as water smart appliances, rainwater tanks and leak management. These will help defer or avert expensive infrastructure projects,” Cr Hoggett explained. “It also shows the need for more pipes, storages and treatment plants=,” he said. “These include the proposed Nabiac Aquifer project that will help secure water supplies in Taree and Great Lakes.” “They also include water storages for Bulahdelah, Stroud and Gloucester and a further focus on increasing the reuse of treated wastewater,” said Mr Hoggett. “At the same time MidCoast Water will continue our investigation of a second storage dam for the Manning water supply scheme and look at options for indirect potable reuse of treated wastewater.” Members of the community are encouraged to have their say on the plan during the public exhibition period, which closes at 5pm on Friday 26 February. Submissions can be made online or via mail.

Children’s author takes on Role Model role By Rebekka CUNNINGHAM NERONG children’s book Author, Bev Brooker has accepted a volunteer position as a Role Model for the National Organisation, Books in Homes. Formed in 2001, Books in Homes, quite simply encourages children to read. Schools from remote and low socioeconomic areas can apply to be in the program. Children are given a list of books from which they choose three titles. At book choosing assemblies, Role Models speak about their journey of being an author and they have the honour of presenting the

selected books to the children for them to keep at home. Since 2010, Bev has written, illustrated, self-published and marketed three books including ‘Trish’s Wish’, ‘Let’s Fly with Grant and Sly’ and ‘You’re a Star, Oscar’ in order to raise money for charity projects. To date, Booklove has given $37,560 to volunteers to use in over 65 projects around the World, some of which are ongoing. Projects include but are not limited to the Children’s Education Program at Monica Memorial in Kenya; an orphanage for deaf and dumb children, a school, a birthing

centre and an orphanage for babies who are abandoned in Bali; and building a school in rural Cambodia. Booklove was able to cover the cost of the foundations and the frame for the walls and roof. This project was finished by a group of Americans and the school is now open. Booklove donate books to school libraries, to children in orphanages and to volunteers who teach English. Seventeen schools in North Pentecost Island, Vanuatu with limited resources received books to be used as school readers. “We like to assist in making long term projects self-sustainable,” says

Bev. “Sewing machines provide a good source of income for places like Cambodia and Vanuatu.” Bev raises most of the money through guest speaking at organisations such as Probus, Rotary, Lions and Church groups. Funds are also raised at fundraising events for larger projects and they also often receive cash donations. Books priced at $8.95 are for sale at Tillermans, The Salty Dog at Coolongolook and by contacting bev@bookloveaust.com.au

Bass Bash back Heading Bold

By Daniel SAHYOUN

Email us your letters - news@mcnota.com.au

THE 2016 Bulahdelah Bass Bash returns to the Myall River on 13 and 14 February, bigger and better than ever. Heavy rain during recent weeks has turned the Myall River muddy, but Fishing Club organisers are confident the river will clear in time for the competition. Now in its 24th Year, Secretary Brett Shultz says the event is expected to be very popular. “It is a great event for the community as everyone can come and have a bit of fun,” he said. “Lots of past residents of Bulahdelah always come back for the event and it is a great opportunity for many community members to have a reunion.” Individuals who wish to participate in the event can register

at the weigh site on the riverbank from 4pm Friday afternoon. Camping is permitted in the area at all times, and should food and drink be required, they will be also available from the event HQ. The weekend will have plenty of events to keep everyone busy, with the famous Bass Bash ball kicking the weekend off to a great start, with the band “Secret Society” making an appearance at the Bulahdelah Bowling Club from 8pm Friday night, while novelty events will be held throughout the Bass Bash to keep junior anglers entertained for hours. Please remember that all caught bass are to be kept in good condition, and are to be released after being recorded at the weigh site. For more information please contact Club President Darren Carrall at 0419996930 or Secretary Brett Shultz at 0418664531.

Dear News Of The Area,

MY 18 year old son was recently issued a whopping $330 fine for having our dog on Burgess beach. He was of course in the wrong, but a fine of that much is excessive. He works to put himself through university and is a good young bloke. I don’t like what Forster has become, minor offences like this should incur a smaller fine. My parents are retirees and they have to bring in their letterbox every night to avoid the local drunken idiots who come home drunk regularly, are they ever fined? We won’t spend our holiday money in Forster anymore, Nelson Bay is closer and they have no electronic parking sensors either. Howard Neely

The Fab Fourteen Dear News Of The Area,

WHETHER to celebrate a special birthday or just a get together these lovely ladies who live locally and have been friends for many years recently enjoyed a delicious lunch at Tillermans Restaurant. The catch up after the Christmas festivities led to lots of laughter and chatter which could be heard far and wide. Good food, served by hosts Kerry and Peter, good wine, great company at a lovely venue ensured an enjoyable day for all. Pam Brooks, Tea Gardens

WEDNESDAY twilight bowls was won by Wendy Grainger, Glen Grainger and Mick Worth with a + 6. Runners up with +2 Richard Laughton, Ron Hourn and Rob Taylor. There was no Jackpot bowls on Saturday due to the playing of an in house pennant trial. 31/1/16 Sunday saw the final of the club fours being played between two evenly matched teams. And in a very good close game the champion fours team for 2016 are Guy Rowe, Ralph Turnbull, Peter Mostyn and skip - Graeme Chapman. Chappy has been playing for 30 years and this is the first major championship he has won. He won the minor singles in 2007 but this is his BIG WIN. Well done Chappy and now that you have broken the drought the flood gates should open. We should not forget the runners up who put up some stiff opposition and went down by 4 shots. Paul Shultz, Ken Towers, who turned 71 on the day, John Bartyn and skip Grant Bidgood. The final score was 16 shots to 12. Later in the day we had a first round game of championship pairs between Chris (the jockey) Whalan, Shane Reed and there opposition Mick Sackley and Mick Worth. In another very close game Chris and Shane got over the line by one shot 23 to 22.

Great numbers BOWLS

Tea Gardens Men’s Bowls By The JAFFA

JANUARY 27: A good field contested the Wednesday Nominated Triples today in fine, but windy, conditions. Warren Gooley, Tom Parkinson and Keith Smith had two solid wins to record +25 but only managed third. Vic Garlick, Bob Skewes and Kevin Williams had a tough game going out managing a 13-13 draw but came home over the top of their second opponents winning 25-9. Their aggregate score of +31 gave them second place but it was the team of John Dubois, making a welcome return home, Ron Green and Danny Johnson that took first place and the money when they posted a +35.
