Mercury is rising By Dave BRAZIER

SO, How hot can it go this Summer? That’s the question on everyone’s lips leading into December. On Thursday 26 November, this particular day started exactly as the authorities had expected. By 8.30am temperatures around Karuah and Hawks Nest had reached 25 DegC and by 10.30am the mercury had just crept past 35. With fires being massive hazard on days like last Thursday, a total Fire Ban was put in place at midnight Statewide to try and alleviate any catastrophes such as what was seen in South Australia last week where lives were lost. Myall Coast region, which is under the control of Gloucester – Great Lakes Rural Fire Service, was

in good hands last week with a few stations on stand-by in case any incidents occurred. Speaking with Myall Coast News, Inspector Max Ryan said, “We have been very fortunate to not have any incidents within our Region at this point.” “The conditions are a real concern and everyone needs to be vigilant in extreme weather conditions like we are experiencing today.” “As a precautionary measure, we have up to six R.F.S units in our region on standby and who are ready for immediate response where needed,” he said. “Fingers crossed we don’t need them,” he said. Inspector Ryan also added, “It’s a timely reminder for everyone to organize their Bush Fire Survival Plan. By looking up the R.F.S website, there are steps and suggestions of what you can do to better prepare yourself in case of an emergency this summer.” For more information on Bushfire safety, look up: www.rfs.nsw.gov.au

The students visited the new Parliament House, the High Court, Questacon, the Telstra Tower and the Dinosaur Museum. Students had a brush of fame with some students meeting and talking with Lachlan Daddo during the Questacon visit. The students and teachers stayed at Gold Creek Tourist Resort and their coach service was excellent with the driver giving them a font of information throughout the trip and taking them on

unscheduled drives around the embassies and high commissions. “Our school captains, Khloe Middleton and Finlay O’Connell, proudly represented the school and community whilst laying a wreath in memory of those who fought and died to ensure our ongoing freedom,” reported Mrs Wills, Relieving Deputy Primary Principal.

Jan McWILLIAMS COUNCIL AMALGAMATIONS

THE last 12 months has not been easy for any NSW Council as we underwent the NSW Government’s Fit for the Future Review, outlining our current financial sustainability, submitting our plans for improvement and then finally receiving IPART’s assessment on our plans. We were extremely pleased to be deemed ‘fit for the future” and in fact, to have satisfied all the criteria set by IPART. IPART further commented that we could ‘stand alone’ and we firmly believe this is the best option for our community. We do not believe a merger with any of our neighbouring councils would be in the best interests of our ratepayers. This month we are all waiting for news from the NSW Government about our future. However, in the current climate, who knows what the NSW Government will decide about our future? We are expecting to hear something by midDecember.

“Also thanks must be extended to the teachers Mrs McDonald and Mrs O’Connell for their efforts in planning and managing

the excursion. I am confident that all three adults in attendance would agree that those hours were well spent to

see the enjoyment had by the students. Some students had not been to our capital before.”

The Christmas Truce performance at Stroud THE Christmas Truce’ tells the story of the first Christmas of World War I, when German and Allied Soldiers laid down their arms and met in no-man’s land, exchanging gifts and goodwill, on Christmas Day 1914. A ukelele player from Hawks Nest, Brian Jones, has written this play to coincide with the 100 year anniversary of the war, and has brought it to Stroud under the Direction of Anne Frost. The play is well written, simple, poignant and well performed and I am sure it will be enjoyed by all. The play runs for about 35 minutes and will be performed as part of the Stroud

Lion’s Annual Seniors Christmas social, followed by afternoon tea. It’s on at the Stroud School of Arts on Saturday 5 December, 2015 at 1.30pm. Stroud Seniors, you will be invited by Stroud Lions in the regular manner. For those who are not Stroud Seniors but would like to see the performance, it has been suggested that you could help out Stroud Lions on the day as they are in need of volunteers. ENTERTAINMENT DEC 4 DEC 11 DEC 18 DONATIONS: The Boobs on the Balcony charity event saw much community assistance and achieved $1027.35 raised.

Boobs on the Balcony raises firm support Surf Life Saving Cub members Windjana Chester, Maddy McLennan and Kenzie Young strutted their stuff to showcase the variety of trendy summer clothing. A continuous raffle was also a highlight of the event. Tickets were drawn every 20 minutes with winners selecting prizes from the mystery gift table. All prizes were generously donated by local Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest businesses as well as community members. Tea Gardens Hawks Nest Surf Life Saving Club Nippers, Molly

and Paris Young worked tirelessly throughout the event ensuring all tickets were sold. I believe that most ladies left the event with a special something from the raffle. Natalie Skelly, spokesperson from the Life Saving Club, said, “I would like to acknowledge and thank the businesses for their generous donations for the raffle.” “Alana’s Gifts and Home wares, Mungo Road Surf Shop, Hawks Nest Newsagency, Myall Pharmacy, Tea Gardens Bakehouse, Ezy Kayaks, Sumeru, Vitamin Bead, BTs for Fashion,

Hawks Nest Cellars, BYO Liquor Stax Hawks Nest, Jenny Hyde – Tile Rescue, Roger at Rogers Computers and Brooke Turner from The Body Shop at Home.” “Tea Gardens Coles Supermarket donated an array of savoury platters for the event and SO-LO Warehouse, Tea Gardens donated all the plastic champagne glasses to house the ladies refreshments.” At the end, after all generous donations and assistance from businesses and individuals, the event raised $1027.35.

owner. Despite this, local landholders and residents are continually concerned of what is happening in their backyard, with yet another complaint made about pollution issued to Myall Coast News, which was then passed onto Mr Pevitt at Great Lakes Council. During recent rains, a resident had been concerned about the black, sticky soil run off that was visible after the downfall in Nanabah Creek. Council attended the site located at 207 Bundabah Road on Thursday 19 November to investigate the complaint that was forwarded on by Myall Coast News, and later stated that there were no issues to be concerned about. Whilst community concerns are seemingly increasing on social media regarding developments at 207 Bundabah Road, Great Lakes Council want to assure the community that they will continue to engage and monitor the properties in question. q

RECENTLY Myall Coast News was contacted regarding pollution and environmental concerns at a proposed development site at Bundabah. Some of those complaints from concerned members of the public have seen the owners of Tea Gardens Farms Pty Ltd, who have planned to develop an Eco-Resort at Fame Cove near Bundabah, fined numerous times by Great Lakes Council due to pollution and land clearing issues. The most recent fine was issued by Great Lakes Councils Investigations & Prosecutions Co-coordinator Mr Greg Pevitt, with the maximum on the spot fines being issued in late October 2015. Remedies suggested by Council to the developer were taken on board quickly after these fines were issued for the problems that were being caused, and Council was happy with the swift and accurate action taken by the

what decisions they should make about dividing up their property. The testator will not lack capacity if they make the wrong moral decision as long as it can be shown they knew what decision they were making. However, it must be borne in mind that close family members left out of a will can challenge the decision. The daughter made a claim for family provision from her mother’s estate and the Court awarded her property despite her mother’s decision to exclude her. The whole exercise therefore involved 2 court claims which are best avoided. The lessons to be learnt from the case are: avoid putting off decisions about writing a will- it is important to remember to write one whilst you have capacity to do so. It is preferable not to exclude major family members because the Court may rewrite the will after you are gone.

Huge raffle By Dave BRAZIER

THE sun had barely come up on Sunday 22 November when the carpark started to get a little busy in the grounds of Karuah RSL & Bowling Club. It wasn’t for breakfast or a nice place to stop off the highway, it was due to the massive anticipation and excitement that has been building for many weeks for the annual Christmas Hamper Raffles.

Choir in Concert By Barbara LYLE EACH year on the first Saturday in December the community are given the opportunity of hearing the Myall U3A Choir in Concert. This year will be no exception, with the concert being held on Saturday 5 December, 7.30p.m. in

As reported in previous issues of Myall Coast News, the prize pool had exceeded $21,000 worth of quality brand goodies and it was pretty obvious that the word on the street was ‘you just had to be there’….the place was packed! The automatic doors hardly closed all morning and into the afternoon as the raffle tickets were sold to a stack of locals and visitors alike. Some bought lots of tickets initially, then came back several times buying more at different intervals to give them a good spread of numbers available, from

the Community Hall at Hawks Nest. A donation of $8, payable at the door, will secure a seat followed by supper. These concerts are an enjoyable mix of musical genres and a showcase of songs which members of the choir have been learning throughout the year. Choral singing is a lifetime passion of their Music Director, Barbara Lyle, who has sung in choirs since the age of 7.

the starting numbers to the end. At the end of the day, luck had to be on your side and for a few people they were lucky enough to collect more than one prize which was a feat in itself taking into account how many other punters were there. It was a fantastic day full of Christmas spirit that will no doubt flow onto when the big fella in the red suit comes on 25 December. Christmas has started early for many people though, with thanks to Karuah RSL, staff and their patrons.

Riley to be the Ambassador

The U3A Choir is ably assisted by Margaret Rowden, their accompanist. The choir meets weekly where Barbara teaches them the basics of voice production, correct breathing techniques, and singing in harmony. Choral singing has proven benefits, endorsed by members of this choir, some of whom do not read music, would never sing a solo, but know that together they can make wonderful music.

Winning performance is on tour

By Rachel REITSMA

MYALL Coast News reported on Bulahdelah Central School Year 11 Drama students winning the grand final of MindPlay, an annual drama competition in the Hunter Region, on Thursday 18 June. Now that winning play is on tour. On Friday 13 November the Year 11 Drama class was invited to perform at the Regional Psychology Conference held at Newcastle University. They performed their award winning MindPlay on Orthorexia Nervosa to a 300 strong crowd.

Drama teacher, Vanessa Shultz, reported that despite having been months since the competition, the group was outstanding and clearly were able to strike a chord with the psychologists in the audience. After the performance, many conference members approached the students to compliment them on their excellence and content and message of their play. They were then asked if the group would consider making a DVD and distributing it to schools. The District Guidance Officer to schools also asked if the drama students would go on tour to the

mid North Coast. “Congratulations to Chloe Shultz, Kyle Shultz, McKelty-Rae Searle, Ruby Keys, Luana White, Kant Richardson, Shannelle Russell and Sarah Rooney.” “Also a huge thank you must go to the Hunter Institute of Mental Health for continuing to host this rewarding competition,” Vanessa Shultz said. The award winning play was written by the Year 11 Drama students and is receiving much attention as mental health is an ever increasing concern within our schools and communities.

they turned it into a walking track. Then with the support of a New Work Opportunity Programme, fifteen locals, the Forestry Commission, the Department of Employment, Education and Training, the project came to fruition. After six months of hard work, surveying, clearing lantana and fallen trees, building bridges, steps, stairs, seats, picnic tables and toilets, the completion of a 6 km heritage walking track was completed. Unfortunately State Forests do not have the resources to maintain the walk but Conservation Volunteers Australia and local volunteers regularly keep the track maintained.

It is now only a 3 km walk with old Trestle Bridge now collapsed. Pat Tate, a volunteer with the Wootton Community Network reported, “Quite a few relics remain of the old bridge timbers, railway track and sleepers. While walking you have to imagine where the trestle bridges spanned the gorges and you can almost hear the clunkety clunk of the train wheels and steam hissing from their chimneys.” The group walked for approximately one to two hours before returning to the Brush Turkey Cafe for a BBQ lunch. IN last weeks edition of Myall Coast News, I reported on some children from Karuah Public School who had their entry in ‘The Heralds’ school newspaper competition published in April this year. Since its inception in 1988, school students from a large readership area of ‘The Herald’ have had the opportunity to put their journalistic skill caps on and enter ‘The Heralds’ and ‘Newcastle Permanent Building Society’ School Newspaper Competition. As I researched articles for this weeks Myall Coast News late on the evening of Tuesday 24 November, I was ecstatic for Karuah Public Student Lucas Price who collected an award from Newcastle Permanent CEO Terry Millet, being for his cartoon entered as part of

an article submitted for Karuah Public Schools contribution to the completion. Lucas was awarded the 2015 certificate for ‘Best Cartoon’, and it also came highly commended. Also collecting a group award for his fellow students, Lucas along with teacher Mrs Megan Saffioti accepted on behalf of the year 5/6 Samuri Writers Group, an award for the Best Editorial which was also highly commended by the judges. I’m sure I’m not alone in the community by congratulating Lucas and his fellow 5/6 writers and would encourage them to keep on drawing and writing, keeping that drive to succeed with the ‘can do attitude’ that so many Karuah Public School students have. Well done Lucas and the Samuri Writers Group at Karuah Public School.

MyallCoastOpinionof the area

MP wants to clarify Dear News Of The Area,

I WRITE to you in relation to an article which appeared in your newspaper on Thursday 19 November 2015 headed 'Opal cards, hmmmmm!' In the article you have quoted the Member for Port Stephens stating that she "has been hammered with complaints and concerns on the same issue and has taken several directives at State government counterparts to try and rectify the stated problem." It is indeed disappointing that the member for Port Stephens did not take the trouble to correct the misinformation that appeared in your article. There are many inaccuracies in Dave Brazier's article about the Opal card and I want to make sure your readers are informed of the facts. Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest are not part of the Opal network and Opal is not used on local buses. That's why there are no Opal retailers operating in the area - but that doesn't mean locals need to travel to Nelson Bay to top up their Opal card, as this article incorrectly claimed. Anyone can top up online at opal. com.au or over the phone on 13 67 25 (13 OPAL) using their credit or debit card. It is simple, easy, and convenient. Within the Opal network, including Port Stephens and Newcastle, you can top up at retailers, or top up machines at stations, or at selected Service NSW centres including the one in Newcastle. The suggestion that tourists could travel to our local area on their Opal card and be stranded because they can't top up and make a return journey is completely wrong. It's not possible to travel to Hawks Nest or Tea Gardens using an Opal card, can top up from any location online or over the phone. Your readers should be aware that from 1 January 2016 most paper tickets for public transport in the metropolitan areas won't be sold, so if you are travelling to Newcastle or beyond you will need to get an Opal card. You can order one from opal. com.au or 13 67 25 (13 OPAL). Opal cards ordered online or by phone are delivered free anywhere in NSW and Australia within 5-7 working days. Adult and Child/Youth

cards are also available from 2,000 retailers, or from eight Service NSW centres. I do trust that the above information clarifies the issue for your readers. Stephen Bromhead MP Member for Myall Lakes

Marine Dr. updates Dear News Of The Area, THE Foreshore Reference Group dealing with the Marine Drive upgrade will not be meeting until the New Year, however we can report on the following developments. The ferry wharf deck resurfacing will begin on Monday 30th November. It is expected to take 2 weeks for completion and the ferry services will be using the public wharf during that period. Their schedules will remain unaltered. The newly planted fig trees are showing some signs of distress, not unexpected with the extreme conditions we are experiencing. The Council arborist is not concerned and believes they will perk up as they get used to their new home. Extra replacement Port Jackson figs are proving difficult to source in both the 200l and 100l sizes and budgeting restrictions have curtailed a continuing search. Council is looking to on grow smaller trees that could be planted over the next year. Orders have been placed for 4 shelters using a wave configuration roof. Some delays have been experienced in sourcing specified parts, however the manufacturers expect to make delivery in time for installation before Xmas Additional bins are to be installed opposite Tillermans, the Ice Cream Shack and Anzac Park. They will be the new style, however without the photographs. Council has been asked to install additional bins opposite Hook-N-Cook and also the fish cleaning tables. The string of coloured fairy lights opposite the restaurant strip has been removed. The chicane on Marine Drive, near the Oyster Hut has been removed, following requests from both the Foreshore group and Progress Association. The removal has improved safety issues expressed by

residents. Application is being made to Essential Energy to decorate 2 power poles along the strip between Ogden and Maxwell Streets---with paintings depicting scenes unique to our area. Improvements are happening with more work to be completed next year. One issue which needs urgent attention is the impersonal concrete blisters on the corner of Maxwell St and Marine Drive as well as planter boxes along the foreshore. The recent road upgrade from Ogden to Charles Streets has been met with community approval and once the improvements to the foreshore are completed, we will have a vista we can all be proud of. Climates a changing Dear News Of The Area, CLIMATE change is going to change our little are a lot. I have completed a university degree in it, talked to locals and lived in the Bulahelah/Tea Gardens area for almost four years. I feel obliged to share my thoughts. Rising sea level - 1 metre over 100 years. What this means is something like our current high tide mark will be the low tide, and the new high tide mark will be further up the beach again. This would pretty well lead to a total demise of infrastructure in the main street of Tea Gardens. If we look down the main street during times of the king tides at christmas, we already see water coming up through the gutters. Could you imagine this water being a metre higher? Winda Woppa would face far more serious erosion. All of the houses on the waters edge at Winda Woppa would face erosion pressures. For those on the southern side, this means completely falling into the sea. The bushfire season will be longer and hotter. We have already seen major bushfires in our area over the last half century. Especially with the escape routes from Hawks Nest, Tea Gardens, Bundabah, Pindimar and North Arm Cove all relying on one road in and out, it is a scary prospect.

Email us YOUR LETTERS news@mcnota.com.au That’s approximately 6000 people. It is no laughing matter. Heat stress is another reason we should be calling our local member for federal parliament and telling his office climate change is a voting issue. AccordingtotheABC’senvironment journalist Sara Phillips: “HEAT STRESS is Australia’s number one natural killer, accounting for the deaths of more people than floods, cyclones, bushfires and storms combined. It’s a situation which is only likely to become worse as the climate changes, researchers warn.” If our government supports private industry, Australia can help pave the way with other countries like Germany to get the world onto renewable electricity sources. Looking at the Bureau of Meteorology website, the prediction for this summer coming up is that there is a very likely chance that we will have warmer than normal summer. As for the climate change deniers out there, I respect you and your opinion. It is just that according to scientists and governments all around the world… yours is wrong. It is similar to saying the world is flat and that the devil lives inside your television. These opinions have grown outdated due to science, so have yours. One argument I have heard is that “climate change has always been happening, it is happening now, it is natural, don’t worry about it”. Well, sure if you don’t mind the consequences mentioned above, don’t worry about it. Climate change does happen without humans on our planet. It can be influenced by the path of the Earth around the sun, volcanic activity on Earth and as well as asteroid impacts. But what we are seeing now is definitely influenced by humans. We therefore also have the power to minimise these effects. Ben Holt Former Pindimar Resident

Expensive water rate Dear News Of The Area, CAN someone explain why customers of MidCoast Water pay twice as much for their sewer service as customers in neighbouring Hunter Water? The quarterly charge for a sewer connection by MidCoast Water

is $296.25 or $ 98.75 per month compared to $49.06 at Hunter Water. This is 101% more! Almost as bad, the water usage charge by MidCoast Water is 31.5% higher. Why is this so? Both have a similar number of sewage treatment plants (15 for MCW and 19 for HWC). Or is it because Hunter Water is a corporation or just more efficient operators and dont waste resources on fanciful projects like a sewage irrigation recycling scheme at Hawks Nest when a perfectly good borewater system is in place? I would like to know, as MidCoast Water customers could save $600 annually if MCW’s efficiency could be improved. Denis Hainsworth Hawks Nest

BOWLS q

SIXTY: Officials plus Members on the green with big 60.

Milestone for women’s bowls Tea Gardens Women’s Bowls By Lily SMITH

CELEBRATING 60 Years: Tea Garden’s Women’s Bowling reached an amazing milestone this year, having been in existence since 22nd November 1955. At That time the club opened with the grand total of 14 members. Our club has come a long way since then, seeing it evolve from a stand-alone club to be one of the well-known and respected clubs in the Newcastle District. That journey wasn’t easy, surviving with 3 name changes as well as moving away from the “white leghorn” tag The bowlers then had to travel near and far, on sometimes hazardous roads, to compete with other Clubs. Our pioneer members are to be congratulated for their tenacity in keeping our club on track. Members won their first Pennant Flag in 1992 with a Grade 4 side. Since then the club has won “ flags “ in grade 4 in 2005, Grade 3 and Grade 4 in 2007, Grade 2 in 2012, and Grade3 in 2013. Pretty impressive!!! Our Men’s and Women’s Clubs have combined well over the years with a very friendly atmosphere when joining together to play in social and fund raising events, the highlight being our Combined Presentation Night which takes place in December every Year.

Our 60th Birthday Celebration was a huge success. The Day started with a welcome to our official guests, who came from Women’s Bowls NSW, and Newcastle District Women’s Bowls. We also had representatives from Karuah and Lemon Tree Passage Women’s Bowling Clubs. Meanwhile our green keeper laid out a big 60 on the green with a colourful array of bowls, while the piper Roslyn Simmons “tuned-up “. Roslyn then piped officials and members on to the green for a photo shoot. Thank you Keith Smith, President of the Men’s Club for taking those photos, (standing up on a step ladder). Officials and both Men’s and Women’s club members then enjoyed a game of Bowls until around 12.30, then it was into the restaurant for lunch. We were fortunate to also have our sponsors attend, with representatives from our main sponsor Pelican Pest Control, RSL LifeCare, RSL Sub Branch and Tea Gardens Country Club. The tables were beautifully laid with each table strewn with “Diamonds” large and small, befitting a Diamond Anniversary. Thank you to our Social Committee who served us lunch. During lunch the wine and champagne flowed, and a great Celebration was had by all!!! The official speeches followed.

Five of our members were awarded Merit Badges from Women’s Bowls NSW for the work they have done over the years for our club. These members are, Liz Kelly, Fay Giggins, Sandra Leisemann, Vicki Rankin and Margaret Smith. Congratulations Girls! A big Thank You goes to our Executive Committee and their helpers for excelling once again and making this Day such a memorable one. Happy Birthday!

Wed 25/11/15. A total of 14 bowlers came out for the twilight bowls and raffle. A good night was had by all and the winners on the evening with a score of +3 George Jones, Barbara Jones and Jan Bartyn. The runners up with +2 Pete White, Ray Towers and Robert Taylor. Sat 28/11/15.On a rather ordinary day, as far as the weather went. We had 12 bowlers turn out for the jackpot bowls. In the first game FredaLaughton, Bo ( I never win anything ) Taylor and Mick Worth proved to strong for the combination of Richard Laughton, Faye Mason and John-Bartyn. Beating them by a margin of 19 and winning on the day. The second game was a close affair and was only decided over the final three ends with the winners of that game and runners up on the day with +8 Pete White, Jan Bartyn and Ken Southern. NOVEMBER 25: There was a good turnout of 48 bowlers to contest the usual Wednesday Nominated Triples competition today. Four rinks were used on both greens with the weather fine and hot with just a slight breeze. The winners; Doug Naylor, Col Amos and David Rimmer, romped home in their first game and demolished their opposition 28-2. They met some real resistance in their second, narrowly winning 11-10. They finished with +37. The second place team of; Peter Jones, Jim Anderson (Gosford BC), and John Parkinson did it in reverse, having a real battle to scrape together a 9-9 draw in their first game and running away in their second to win 18-2. They finished with +32. November 27: Friday Jackpot Pairs moved away for the day to make way for the very special Dolphin Day competition.
