Little Kye’s struggle in the world

PINDIMAR boy Kye Richards may look like your average nearly 4-year-old boy, but that could be further from the truth. Sure he plays with his toys, gets into mischief and does what most boys his age are doing. But Kye suffers from an incurable genetic disease, the biggest childhood genetic killer in the world, Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. Duchenne or DMD as it’s known affects one in every 3500 boys born each year and in rare cases some girls are also affected. DMD is a muscle degenerative disease, that leads to heart failure. Kye is now starting to struggle with walking, jumping and climbing, things many of us take for granted. Most children with DMD are confined to a wheelchair around 8-12 years of age as the disease worsens and they can no longer walk, eventually most boys require a tracheotomy so they can breathe, and a peg feed to eat. They will struggle to use their upper body limbs and relying on a carer to bath, toilet and feed them. Time is ticking with Duchenne and every single minute counts. There are currently treatments on the horizon, however they are yet to go through stringent human trials then will need to get approval which takes years, time these boys and girls do not have.

Federal electoral boundary change The seat of Lyne

By Daniel SAHYOUN NATIONAL Party, Dr David Gillespie MP, is the new Federal Member for the Myall Coast area as a result of the electoral boundary shakeup which came into effect last Friday. Formally part of the seat of Paterson represented by Mr Bob Baldwin MP, Karuah and the entire Great Lakes Local Government Area are now officially part of the Federal seat of Lyne. The boundary changes mean a shift south for Lyne, losing Port Macquarie and picking up over half of Paterson. The new boundaries stretch from Karuah in the South to Lake Cathie and

Ballengarra in the North. Current sitting member for Lyne Dr David Gillespie, elected to the seat in 2013, said he is pleased to have the opportunity to represent the Myall Coast community. “I’m very much looking forward to representing the people of this beautiful part of Australia and I am really excited about the future prospects for this region,” he said. “I’ve already had a number of visits to the area, spoken to a number of locals and have also received a briefing from the Great Lakes Deputy Mayor about some of the issues council has been working on.” CONTINUED Page 2

“I am planning on undertaking a series of forums throughout the electorate over the coming weeks.” Dr Gillespie, who had a successful medical career spanning over 20 years as a physician and medical educator on the Mid-North Coast, will be focusing his attention on a number of issues concerning his new electorate. Local infrastructures, small

business, tax reforms, health cover and medical services, aged care and tackling the fight against drugs are all on Dr Gillespie’s list of priorities. Federal Member for Paterson Mr Bob Baldwin, who now goes from a safe conservative seat to a marginal Labor seat, expressed his sadness at losing more than half his area to Lyne. “Sadly, my much loved communities including Karuah, Tea Gardens, Hawks Nest, Nerong,

Bulahdelah, North Arm Cove, Tahlee, Bundabah and Pindimar will all fall into the Federal Seat of Lyne,” he said. “I thank you all for your support and friendships made over so many years, it has indeed been an honour to represent these communities and they will always have a special place in my heart.” Dr Gillespie intends his association with the community will be ongoing with confirmation he will contest the seat in the 2016 Federal Election.

Making every minute count Community support for Kye and greater awareness on Duchenne

FROM Page 1 The life expectancy for those with DMD varies as all cases are not the same, children as young as 10 have lost their battle with Duchenne and some boys in their 20’s are still living (Most of those rely on machines to keep them alive, and quality of life is not something they have). Kye and his family live in Pindimar and face a very uncertain future with their little boy. Kye’s parents, Mark and Louise,

have a positive attitude to Kye’s disease, vowing to make every minute with their little man count. Mark, a childhood cancer survivor said, “I only wish Duchenne had a survival rate like my cancer, at least I had a fighting chance, Kye doesn’t get that with DMD.” Sadly, at this stage DMD is incurable and there are no treatments - each week around the globe families are burying their children. Kye’s mum Louise said, “The

trouble is that Duchenne doesn’t have the awareness it needs, we need to make DMD a household name, the more people who can donate to this cause, the closer we get to saving our son, and all the children who suffer from this heartbreaking illness.” At present the Richards family have a Go Fund Me page that has been circulating on social networks, however after a month they have not had much success in their campaign, a portion of monies raised will be donated to research,

the rest will be put into a fund to aid in Kye’s future care. If you would like to help this local family, donations can be made at this web address where you can help young Kye in his quest for life. Paul and Janelle Smyth with office manager Anne Hepplewhite continue the tradition of courteous and, dignified service to the Karuah, Tea Gardens, Hawks Nest and Bulahdelah region since 1893.

In January 2016 the Federal Circuit Court heard a dispute between a medical receptionist and a Doctor as to whether she was a casual, or a part time, employee. The receptionist said she was a casual and had been underpaid by reference to the applicable award rate. The Doctor said she was a part timer and had been properly paid under the award. The Court concluded the only reasonable inference was that the Doctor did not There was no written contract so the Court believe the relationship was that of part time looked to the award for guidance. pattern of employment was not “reasonably predictable” in the sense used in the award. The Court also said that if the receptionist had in fact been a part time worker, as the Doctor claimed, it would have expected to see evidence she had been regularly paid (pro rata) annual leave, and overtime for working outside “standard” working hours. No such payments had been made until the Fair Work Ombudsman contacted the Doctor (after the employment had ended).

Recognition for pride in personal performance By Rebekka CUNNINGHAM THE Myall Coast Rotary Club hosted their inaugural “Pride of Workmanship Awards” last week at the Tea Gardens Country Club. The event was attended by over 70 family, friends, employers and fellow employees of the recipients. Recipients of this year’s Awards were: David Lewis from Tillermans Restaurant; Ian Dunlop of the HN/TG Surf Lifesaving Club; Ros Jones and Julie Hammond from the Holiday Coast Credit Union; Katie Ambrose

from Tea Gardens Palm Lake Resort; Peter Economos of the Pindimar/ Tea Gardens Rural Fire Brigade; Samantha Rowling from Tea Gardens Real Estate and Kath Henry from the Karuah Public School. The “Pride of Workmanship” Award was launched as a Rotary project by the Rotary Club of Pennant Hills in June 1975. The aim was to encourage a much-needed pride in personal performance in the workplace, and to help create a national attitude for the benefit of our country.

LAST week, Mark Hughes, Senior Vice President of Country Labor Federal Electorate Council for Lyne, announced Peter Alley as the candidate for Country Labor for the upcoming Federal Election. Peter has been a member of the Party for more than 20 years and was elected unopposed. He contested the seat of Lyne for Country Labor in 2013. Mr Alley has worked in the IT, Banking and Finance industries for some 25 years and in more recent times he has worked in the non-profit sector with schools and churches.

A resident of the Camden Haven, Peter is completing a Law degree with Southern Cross University. Mark Hughes told Myall Coast News Of The Area, “It is a pleasure to have Peter Alley recontest the seat of Lyne.” “Peter has worked tirelessly throughout the community, and would be able to achieve so much more if elected,” said Mr Hughes. News Of The Area caught up with Peter Alley. He said, “Lyne is on the move south and

and ethics, inclusive of quality and quantity of output, safety, initiative, sense of responsibility. Ian Mackenzie-Smith of the Myall Coast Rotary Club said, “The Rotary Club would like to express their appreciation to the Business Community for embracing the Award Programme.” “We would also like to extend our congratulations to the 2016 Recipients of the Award for the values they bring to their vocation that make them worthy participants,” he said. I welcome everyone from ForsterTuncurry, Bulahdelah, Lorn, Hawks Nest and Tea Gardens, Nerong, Karuah, Stroud, Dungog, Clarence Town, Seaham, Paterson and Gresford into the seat of Lyne.” “The Abbott-Turnbull experiment has failed. We need a government that cares about fairness in education, health and job opportunities in our community,” he said. State Member for Port Stephens Kate Washington said, “Peter Alley is a man of great integrity and he cares deeply about the community. I’m delighted that he’s Country Labor’s candidate for Lyne.”

A TWENTY eight year old Tea Gardens male will appear in Raymond Terrace Local Court later this month after being charged with a mid-range drink-driving offence over the weekend. The male was stopped by police on Coupland Avenue in Tea Gardens at 1.20am on Sunday 28 February for the purpose of a roadside breath test. Returning a positive result, the intoxicated man was placed under arrest and conveyed to Tea Gardens Police Station where a breath analysis was conducted. The analysis confirmed a blood alcohol level of 0.147, almost three times over the legal limit. The man’s licence was suspended on the spot and a court notice issued.

CCTV catches handbag thief

A THIRTY four year old Nerong male was charged with two counts of theft after stealing personal belongings from employees at Karuah IGA. After unsuccessfully attempting to obtain a refund for a lamp he claimed to have purchased, the male left the store and re-entered through the rear doors at 3pm on 6 February. He then stole two handbags belonging to employees from the staffroom. Police attended and immediately identified the offender from CCTV footage, with checks revealing outstanding warrants. The man was arrested at his home in Nerong before being conveyed to Raymond Terrace Police Station where he was charged. The man was refused bail and appeared in Raymond Terrace Local Court on 7 February.

Arrested kicking and screaming A FIFTY three year old female was charged with four accounts of assault, two of assaulting police and offensive language, following an incident at a local licenced premise on Thursday 25 February. Police were called after the female assaulted the manager. The offender’s husband, who attempted to assist the manager, was then punched in excess of 30 times. Another staff member was also assaulted. The woman lashed out at police, kicking them in the leg after they attempted to speak with her. The female was cuffed and taken to Raymond Terrace Police Station. Police report, “For no apparent reason she has gone mad and punched the manager.”

Hurt and fined

A THIRTY one year old Sydney man was injured after travelling in a trailer towed behind a vehicle along Mungo Brush Road on Monday 22 February. Police and ambulance officers were called at about 4.20pm after the man fell from the moving trailer, suffering serious cuts and grazes to the face and foot. Police report the male, who was camping in the Banksia Green Camp Ground, “thought it would be great to ride in a trailer.” The man declined any transportation to hospital. He was issued an infringement notice for $311 for travelling in the trailer.

Dredging has assisted our oyster farms By Dave

BRAZIER

DUE to the pristine quality of its waters, the Myall River has been a major oyster producer for over a hundred years, well known for production of spat (young oysters) and high quality mature oysters. It was home to 13 oyster farmers who were forced to close their businesses over the past 10 years due to a deterioration in water quality and a huge drop in salinity levels. Farmers are required by law to market their product when those levels are higher than 18ppm and at times the levels reached only 7ppm at the Singing bridge. The plight of those producers was a major consideration in

BUSINESS that councillors consider at meetings ranges from information reports for noting, to controversial landuse developments.

the dredging has been the main reason we are harvesting much healthier oysters,” said Mr Cole. “We would like to thank those in the community who pushed for the dredging to be done again, we all owe them a high level of gratitude for their hard work,” he said. Reflecting on Dean Coles sentiments, Gordon Grainger from the Myall River Action Group told News Of The Area, “Dredging the river had been a policy of authorities for almost 100 years and ceased in 1998 when funds were withdrawn. Calls for a dredging program began in 2008 and with huge community support a successful

campaign was completed in October last year.” “The result of clearing the entrance has meant a return to normal salinity levels, a more even flow of incoming and outgoing flow and a side issue has been the re-emergence of sea grasses in the Pindimar foreshore,” he said. Gordon Grainger added, “It is gratifying to us to learn that oyster farmers are resuming their businesses and that we have reports that the crop harvested in the November December periods are recorded as some of the best months ever.”

Deputy Mayor offers inside look at Council Our council operates on a formal monthly council meeting, fortnightly strategic committee meetings and workshops. Workshops are designed to brief councillors on background information to help them make informed decisions on strategic or other matters when they eventually come before council. the formation of the Myall River Action Group who believed the gradual closure of the natural, or eastern channel was the major reason for the decline in river quality. The benefits from dredging works in the Myall River that were completed in October 2015 seem to be increasing for local aquaculture based businesses. With the waters being cleaner and salinity levels returning to near perfect levels, produce from the river and in particular near the entry to the River has never been better. Speaking with News Of The Area, Dean Cole from Cole Brothers Oysters said, “All of the oyster farmers have mentioned how much better their products have been since the Myall river was dredged.” “Whether it’s coincidence or not, most of us with leases in the Myall river seem to think that

about the matter and may talk several times as the conversation proceeds. Council has found these strategic meetings beneficial and collaborative. They are not oppositional but a meeting of the minds to give the staff feedback and direction as well as generally a consensus decision. Formal council meetings are a different matter with robust debate, generally over controversial items or philosophically/politically differing viewpoints. Nonetheless the current group of councillors tend to be satisfied with the outcome because each

matter has been robustly and soundly argued. Decisions are not made along political or friendship lines but on merit and individual conscience. Our last meeting contained a matter that on the surface was one that all could enthusiastically support. It was a council generated proposal and would have been a positive benefit to the community. However, questions about the process surrounding the proposal began to reveal cracks which eventually turned into canyons. Each councillor was flattened by the revelations and unanimously rejected the proposal.

It was perhaps the worst thing that we all experienced as councillors. However, it was at the same time, a good thing because it showed the professionalism and strength of character of those in the room. It also highlighted the fact that we do have a system in place to pick up errors of judgement and will only improve from this experience. I am proud and humbled to belong to Great Lakes Council with councillors prepared to make the hard decisions based on principled decision making.

Seed Savers group tour Farm By Rachel REITSMA

THE Port Stephens Seed Savers collect local non-hybrid plant varieties and its thirty attendees conduct seed swaps and have open discussions about seeds collected, what varieties worked and ones that haven’t been as successful. They also hold workshops twice a year. Their summer Field Day was held at Honeycomb Valley Farm at Nabiac on Saturday 20 February. Anna and Andrew Campbell were the hosts for the day and led an informative tour of the farm. Honeycomb Valley Farm is a ninety acre farm which grows organic produce for markets

and is also a Farm Stay/Bed and Breakfast. The Port Stephens Seed Savers were led first through the herb maze where there was common and exotic herbs to pick, smell and taste. “Each section represented something different and there was so much variety. At the end of the tour we were each invited to pick our favourite herbs to brew our own tea,” said Rosalie Lennard. The group were then able to visit the goats, alpacas, horses and sheep who were grazing down by the dam. The farm also has large enclosures for free range chooks. Tea Gardens/Hawks Nest Women’s Cancer Support Group had its first meeting at the turn of the millennium in July 2000. This year marks the sixteenth year. Many local ladies have benefited from the convenience of joining in with a wonderful Support Group right here in town. Mid North Coast Area Health assisted initially by hosting a community meeting and soon after the TG/HN Breast Cancer Support Group was established with monthly meetings held at the Great Lakes Council meeting room. Myall Local Directory owners, Anne & Geoff Reynolds, sponsored the rental fees for the first 2 years (Anne herself, a survivor of 2 cancer challenges). Later the Group was extended to include ladies afflicted with any cancer. Information, experiences, optimism and humour fill our get-togethers. As of this year we have a delightful new venue for our meetings and wish to extend our appreciation to Jacinta Stuart, the Manager of Tea Gardens Manor along with new owners, Estia Health, for offering to host our meetings at their wonderful facility at 42 Spinifex Avenue. The Group meets monthly and offers a relaxed and gentle setting for caring and sharing. We meet at 10.30am on the 2nd Monday of the month (except Public or Xmas Holidays). Enquiries most welcome. Anne Reynolds 4997 0113 or Cheryl Milburn 4997 2442. Next meeting is scheduled for 14 March.

Tinny hit by speed boat Speed boat driver took off without assisting

q

POLICE have praised the efforts of local fishermen for their assistance following a boating accident which left a man with serious lacerations to his forehead over the weekend. Emergency services were called after a 6.5 metre fibreglass speed boat collided with the side of a 5.5 metre aluminium runabout on Mungo Brush Broadwater at about 8pm on Saturday 27 February. The speedboat left the

scene without rendering assistance, leaving the damaged runabout stranded and taking on water. A fisherman rescued the injured man before towing the vessel to Mungo Brush boat ramp. Police provided a description of the offending speedboat to commercial fishermen in the area, resulting in the boat being located at Mungo Brush campground. The 35-year-old speedboat owner was arrested and taken

to Tea Gardens Police Station where he was charged with dangerous navigation, DUI and failure to render assistance to a vessel in distress. The 51-year-old male skipper of the runabout was treated by Tea Gardens paramedics, receiving seven stitches to his forehead. Police have stressed that without the assistance of the local fishermen, the victim may have suffered more serious injuries with the offenders remaining unidentified.

FOR those on pensions and dependant on concessions, these days every dollar saved really does count. The struggle is often worsened when a constant reliability of prescription medications are also required, and with some costs having increased over the years, the news that some medications will be available cheaper from the first of March is certainly welcoming to many people. The Australian Government now allows pharmacies the option to discount the patient contribution on prescriptions, which is subsidised by Medicare.

Pharmacy says they’ll pass on the discounts

Speaking with News Of The Area, Graeme Hackworthy from Myall Pharmacy in Hawks Nest said, “While it is at each Chemists discretion whether to pass on the discount offered, Myall Pharmacy are more than happy to be able to pass on the maximum discount on generic brands of medication.” “The changes to the

Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) for 2016 allows us to purchase generic brands at much better prices, of which we are happy to pass that discount onto our customers,” he said. Medications included in the discount scheme will include all Alphapharm and Apotex products. Mr Hackworthy said, “The safety net threshold rates for the 2016 PBS for general patients is $1475, while Concessional patients it is $372. The new PBS is quite flexible for each patients requirements, and offers the patient the choice of opting out of the discount to avoid delay in reaching the safety net for 2016.”

Action Group explains Dear News Of The Area, THE recent publicity regarding the proposal for a tidal pool on Marine Drive has unfortunately resulted in some missunderstandings within certain sections of the community and may need clarification. The Myall River Action Group (MRAG) prime public face, has been behind the recently achieved dredging of the natural channel of the Myall River. Along that road, we were urged to pursue other projects the community felt needed improvement and were successful in playing a major part in the installation of the public wharf opposite the hotel. We were asked to submit proposals for further improvements through a Government sponsored program known as “Better Boating”. Those projects were identified and we were successful in achieving promises of four proposals

and a sum of $250K was allocated to this region. It is generally accepted that mooring capacity for water craft is woefully inadequate along the Tea Gardens waterfront, therefore the major projects called for the installation of a second public wharf and the resurfacing of the ferry wharf deck which has now been completed. The MRAG was asked by members of the community to consider a replacement for the tidal pool which had pride of place from the 1920’s to the 1960’s. Such an installation could incorporate pontoons on three sides to cater for small boats and we conducted an informal survey of a number of commercial operators, residents and morning walkers along the waterfront. The proposal was met with general acclamation and we resolved to ask consideration to replace the extra wharf

proposal with this alternative which should be within the grant amount. It is obvious that should this be achievable, opinions would be sought from the general public. At no stage was there a suggestion that this tidal pool would replace the current public pool. As an update, we have been informed that the subjects of the grant are unable to be changed at this late stage, therefore we hopefully can expect a new public wharf within the next 12 months. The subject of the tidal pool, amongst other suggestions, is to be taken up under a new Govt. sponsored program titled “Boating Now” shortly to be undertaken by consultants who will involve Council, Govt. agencies and community groups in the near future and the general community later in the year. Dear News Of The Area,

MY family have lived and stayed on the waterfront of Tea Gardens for well over 100 years. [In my opinion] Councils have continually striven to destroy all that is beautiful and natural about this environment. With lack of forethought, bad planning, slovenly execution and with patchwork efforts to correct their endeavours. The Original Tidal Baths were built in the Mid 1930’s. By 1946 the small piles, supposed to keep the sharks out, were completely rotted-out below the low water line and the whole facility was only useable for swimming at high tides. It survived because of the cafe onshore and toilets. The wonderful population of Tea Gardens/ Hawks Nest raised the funds to create the safe swimming pool we now have to enjoy.

To even think of a tidal pool is an unnecessary waste of planning effort and money Council should use the funds to, Repair and maintain the Wharves for the Ferries, Rebuild the “Tamboy Queen” wharf, and to dredge the boating channel the along the whole of Tea Gardens for the use of the boaties. 296 competitors representing 66 clubs from Townsville to Canberra, Belmont and Shelly Beach played at Hawks Nest recently in the 2016 Myall Coast Veterans Week of Golf. The course was in excellent condition with very little run on some of the best presented kikuyu fairways I have seen. The greens were moderately paced and manageable for all players. Visiting golfers were greeted by a good number of Myall Coast members and officially welcomed by Bob Macklinshaw, the Tournament Director. It was a great opportunity to reconnect with old friends and make new ones. The Presentation Dinner

had 360 people sit down to a three course feast. The chef’s efforts in presenting 180 steaks of such quality deserves special mention as should the staff who did a sterling job in serving the meal to so many diners in such a prompt manner. Presentations were made to major trophy winners by representatives of the major sponsor, RSL Lifecare. This event is extremely well organised on so many levels that it is not difficult to work out why it is so popular. It is strongly supported by its members, 60 or more, who gave up their time to act as spotters or bunker rakers or both over the four days. The Bistro in the club presents specials most nights and many visitors staying in the

nearby caravan park and units took the opportunity to “eat out” to avoid the washing up. The week was most successful due to the work of Bob Macklinshaw and his committee. Bob was present in the clubhouse from early morning to late evening and was always available for a chat thus enhancing the friendly atmosphere of the event. Congratulations to Myall Coast Veterans for creating the opportunity for veteran golfers to visit your area, play a wonderful golf course and enjoy the hospitality of the locals. Won’t take Twenty Seven for Over Sixties Ambulance criticism Dear News Of The Area, BY contrast with Mr. Ronald Judge’s experience outlined in Myall Coast News Of The Area Opinion (edition 25 February 2016 ‘Don’t agree, State Gov.’), my experience has been quite the opposite. Rather than the suggestion that the ambulance situation in Tea Gardens is absolutely disgusting, I found it to be absolutely fantastic. My dad spent the last couple of years of his life with me, experiencing a stroke in February, from which he fully recovered and another in August, when he didn’t. On both occasions, the ambulance was there exceptionally expediently and their services were astoundingly professional. Recently during the daytime we had a medical situation, where I transferred the person to the medical centre and was chastised for not calling an ambulance on the basis that they have the expertise and equipment to grapple with such situations. So for mine, I am at odds with any criticism of our ambulance service and question the political motives of those who do. Bob Macklinshaw, Tea Gardens

Council are looking for volunteers CLEAN Up Australia Day is set for Sunday 6 March and Great Lakes Council is taking registrations for people who can help pick up rubbish at a site near them. Although the cut-off date for registrations is Friday 26 February, you can call Council on 6591 7222 to register with our Waste team. “Council currently has 16 sites registered for Clean Up Australia Day and there are eight schools participating in Schools Clean Up Australia Day on Friday 4 March this year,” said Council’s Manager of Waste Health and Regulatory Services, Mr John Cavanagh. Clean Up Australia inspires and empowers communities to clean up and conserve our environment. A simple concept became an international success thanks to the foresight of founder Ian Kiernan. In 1989 Ian had a simple idea to make a difference in his own backyard - Sydney Harbour.

As an avid sailor, Ian competed in the 1987 BOC Challenge Solo Round-the-World Yacht Race. As he sailed through the oceans of the world in his yacht ‘Spirit of Sydney’ he was shocked and disgusted by the pollution and rubbish that he continually encountered. Once back in Sydney, Ian organised a community event with the support of a committee including Clean Up co-founder Kim McKay AO. Clean Up Sydney Harbour Day in 1989 received an enormous public response, with more than 40,000 Sydneysiders donating their time and energy to improve their environment. The next year Clean Up Australia Day was born. In the past 25 years, Australians have devoted more than 27.2 million hours towards the environment through Clean Up Australia Day and collected over 288,650 tonnes of rubbish.

Immunisation too low Foreshore update By Daniel SAHYOUN

FIGURES from the National Health Performance Authority show one out of every 10 children in the Myall Coast area is not fully immunised. With a national target for child immunisation set at 95%, the statistics show many communities across the country fell short of this mark. The Health Authority report, which was released last week, reveals only 88% of children in the Myall Coast area aged one, two and five were fully immunised during the last financial year. With over 84, 000 children aged one, two and five not fully immunised across the country, rates are too low to prevent the potential spread of diseases. “There are too many communities in Australia that still have child immunisation rates that are not high enough to ensure communities are protected against potentially dangerous illnesses.”

from Ref. Group

By Gordon GRAINGER On behalf of the Marine Drive Foreshore Reference Group THE Group recently held the first meeting for 2016. All Group members expressed the view that progress had been far too slow considering the initial meeting was held in November 2014. Although, it was acknowledged that some progress had been made in the resurfacing of the ferry wharf deck, the planting of two Port Jackson trees and the selection and the start of installing four shade shelters. The Group members reiterated they represented the community and were expressing community views in that the promised improvements were taking too long. Council advised that they had a limited budget which had already been exceeded resulting in the cessation of locating replacement trees. It was agreed that additional funding was vitally needed and would be raised at the next Council Strategic Meeting to be held 8 March. Other points from the agenda were discussed. Coral trees: Council had planned to remove at least four trees in the near future on the basis the four new shelters were in place. This was strongly contested on the understanding those trees were not to be removed until suitable replacements were located. The original plan of all Port Jackson figs does not appear to be attainable. All parties agreed other suitable trees could be selected. Council arborist Josh Duncomb, will be invited to attend the next meeting. Shelters: Framework has been installed for two shelters and posts have been dug for the other two. Roofs are in stock and we expect completion in the near future. At the time of writing, one has been completed. RMS funding: The Better Boating program has been replaced by Boating Now under the auspices of RMS. The program identified four projects within the Tea Gardens Hawks Nest waterway and State Govt. has promised a sum of $250K. These programs are: the installation of dinghy storage racks along the foreshore of ANZAC Park—strongly resisted by residents and boatowners. Some samples are shown in

the above photos. The redecking of the ferry wharf which has been completed, duplication of the public wharf and the installation of a larger shelter for ferry passengers. The State funds are available to end financial year 2017 and will be lost if not taken up. The funding is for identified projects only and suggestions of a tidal pool/wharf to replace the proposed public wharf can be considered a future project (see investigation projects). A suggestion has been made to remove the dinghy racks and replace with a low retainment wall along the foreshore of ANZAC Park. That will arrest further erosion and form a mooring place for small craft by providing rings or rail. To summarise, the Boating Now program can be divided into two parts. Construction projects to be completed within the next financial year are the installation of a new public wharf to be located south of the existing public jetty. The installation of a dinghy storage area (to be opposed, see above). Investigation projects to be conducted by RMS in conjunction with consultants include a redevelopment plan for Tea Gardens Hawks Nest to include small craft access points, tie up locations and additional wharves, jetties and pontoons. Consideration is being given to the feasibility, layout and location of a future harbour / marina in the Myall River. They will request discussions with various community groups and a call for public meetings asking for ideas on future improvements to recreational use of the waterways. At the time of going to print, the first discussions will be held between the consultants, community groups and government agencies on Monday, 7 March.

Extensive renovation on workshop By Daniel SAHYOUN

BULAHDELAH Central School’s Industrial Arts complex has reopened this week, following an extensive three month renovation. Featuring a major upgrade, improvements have included replacement of equipment, increasing workspace for students and improved safety structures. The new equipment includes an $11,000 table saw which will allow students to produce a higher standard of accuracy in their projects. Other new equipment includes a drop saw, work benches, dust extractor, ventilation systems, lighting and pendant power.

Safety structures have been upgraded with designated safety zones a major feature of the workshop design. The safety zones are in line with Department of Education and Communities’ regulations and allow safer working conditions for students when using machinery and electrical equipment. The renovations also included removing a number walls to provide additional work space. Head Teacher of Technical and Applied Sciences Mr Chris Gladys, said he is pleased with the upgrades. “The renovations have created an improved working environment for students,” he said. “The design is especially

beneficial for senior students giving them more scope to produce quality major projects.” Storage areas in the workshop have also undergone a transformation. Designed by Head Teacher Mr Gladys, the new storage areas provide practical and space-saving facilities. “The innovative storage areas are unique to the Mid-North Coast area and are based on designs used in private schools which were viewed while HSC marking,” Mr Gladys said. The majority of the funding for the upgrade came from the Department of Education, with the school contributing approximately $20,000 towards the project.

Principal Mr Don Hudson said the upgrades to the workshop, which was originally opened over 30 years ago, would significantly benefit the students. “With so many improvements to facilities and equipment, the upgrades have created a safer and more enjoyable workspace for the students,” he said. Used for Industrial Technology, Timber, Construction, Design and Technology and VET Courses, the room will be utilised by students in Years 7 to 12. The workshop, in addition to the school’s metalwork and automotive rooms, provides students with stateof-the-art facilities to develop lifelong practical skills.

Tea Gardens Men’s Bowls By The JAFFA

24 FEBRUARY: Due to mid-week Pennant commitments, a depleted field of 38 players contested the usual Wednesday Nominated Triples with a windy and very hot day to keep them company. My sources did not reveal the winning scores but I do know that Gary Wynne, John Moore and Stewart Sturrock came in third from Peter Gurney, Bob Weir and Bill Whalan filling second spot. The winners for the day were the composite team of Harry Hauben/ George (Frosty) Winter, Bondi Moon and Max Stephens. Congratulations! The first team ever from Tea Gardens to contest the Newcastle District Mid-Week Pennants journeyed to Hamilton North to play in the Grade 4 section of the competition. When players arrived at the venue, the green was still in the process of being prepared so that

pre-game practice on what turned out to be a spongy slow grass-green put our players at a disadvantage. A brisk north-easterly breeze tempered the hot conditions but had little, if any, effect on the bowls played. It is history now that Tea Gardens lost two of the three matches played and went down on the Master Board 42-76. Ouch! All praise to the team of Neil Kibble, Doug Naylor, George Brown and Skip, Richard Lee who salvaged some pride for the home team. Well played! 26 February: Friday Jackpot Pairs was played today with 16 bowlers taking part. Thankfully there was some cloud cover that accompanied a cooler southerly change. The temperature was reduced but playing conditions were difficult. The highest winning margin was the method used to determine the winners. Just falling short in second place was the team of John Slater and Tony Attard. They had a margin of +15. Taking the money on +21 was: Bondi Moon (not again!), and Henk Faber.

27 February: The annual Corporate Day was held today under cloudy skies with 14 teams attending, representing the various Bowling Club sponsors. Bowling Club members filled in any gaps. Two “Spiders” were held, one for lady bowlers and one for the men. Sue Baldwin, resplendent in blue hair, from Palm Lake Resort, won the lady bowler prize and Mick Rumble, Hawks Nest First National Real Estate won the men’s trophy. There was to be 6 ends of ThreeBowl Triples played but alas, the rain came and restricted this to only 3 ends. Mick Rumble was really having a field day when his First National team, which included Dianne Dickson and Noel Jackson, took home the coveted Corporate Day “Golden Bowl” trophy. Well done! 28 February: In Sunday Introduction to Bowls, 25 Bowlers played with the winners decided by the lowest winning margin. It was a count-back on ends that saw Lynda Richards, Dorothy Thompson and Karen McPhee take the money.

Very hot game GOLF

Hawks Nest Golf Club Social Club By Luke BOYD THURSDAY 25 February, the afternoon of sweltering heat didn’t stop twenty of the keenest social golfers playing a brilliant round of golf. Winning the daylight savings nine

holes of social golf was Michael Howell, scoring 21 points. The runner up was Mick Rumble who scored 20 points. The nearest to the pin was Jed Malone. The raffle winner was new member Clinton Jacobson.

q NICE PUTT: Michael Howell putting to victory.

The lucky losers were Dianne Kiss, Lon Richards and Stu Sturrock. Thanks to cooks Barry Goode and Peter Gurney and to our coach Kathie Rimmer. A sunny mild day greeted the players in the quarter-finals of the Club Minor Singles which saw “rookie” Denis Wilberforce confronting Peter Gurney, the inform Bill Helybut testing Vic Garlick, Ross Barry facing last year’s finalist Danny Johnson and Mark Hair taking on evergreen Doug Naylor. Denis gave a really good account for himself but never quite managed to catch the more experienced Peter Gurney who powered away from the 28th end to win 31-19. A similar fate awaited Vic Garlick who held a 5 shot winning margin at the 31st end but Bill came back over the next four ends taking the match at the 35th by 31-27. Great game! Ross Barry played some very consistent draw bowls in a game played over 34 ends. He relinquished the lead only once at the 14t end where Danny led briefly 13-12. A four at the 19th followed by a succession of singles saw Ross open up a handy 9 shot lead and from there he was never headed finally winning 31-21. Well played Ross! Powering away seemed to be the order of the day when Mark Hair established an early lead over Doug Naylor leading by 9 shots at the 15th end. Doug, not to be outdone, came back and closed the gap to just 2 at the 23rd but Mark clinched the game taking 9 shots in the last 4 ends winning 31-20. Next Sunday 6 March will see the semi-finals of the Club Minor Singles with Peter Gurney opposing Bill Heylbut and Mark Hair taking on Ross Barry. Should be some good bowls played! In Pennants, Tea Gardens midweek Grade 4 side will play Fingal Bay at home on 2 March. Saturday Pennants will commence next Saturday 5 March with Grade 3 playing Lowlands at home, Grade 4 will play away at Carrington, Grade 6 will also play away at Mayfield West whilst Grade 7 has a bye.

CHAMPIONS: Jim Lyons, Jeanette Dunkin and Tournament Director Bob Maclinshaw.

The annual Sixteenth Week of Golf GOLF By Bob MACLINSHAW RECENTLY the 16th week of golf was again very successfully hosted by the Myall Coast Veteran Golfers Club (MCVGC) at Hawks Nest golf course, in association with major sponsor RSL LIFECare, under the auspices of the New South Wales Veteran Golfers Association. A comfortable capacity field for the tournament was oversubscribed within seven days of the mail-out of entry forms for the exceptionally popular tournament, with priority given to visiting veteran golfers. Contributions from local businesses ‘Ella’s Boutique’ and ‘BTs For Fashion’ also chipped in with much appreciated sponsorship for particular prizes. This championship course was again presented in pristine condition by the course crew led by Bobby Lee. Following a sausage sizzle and registration on Sunday, capacity fields of 296, 292 and 290 completed their rounds in relatively good weather over the first three days. Despite the terrible weather on the final day nearly 100 veteran golfing tragics fronted the starter and a majority completed their rounds. Members from 66 clubs from Vincentia and Canberra in the south and south west, Wentworth (Orange) and The Longyard (Tamworth) in the west and north west to Townsville in the north and other

significant distances were travelled by competitors from clubs within that area, with feedback suggesting a fantastic experience was had by all. An indicator of the success is that 366 have already requested entry forms for the 2017 tournament. Sitting 346 for the presentation dinner dance, with a fine selection of Bob Oatley signature table wines; the chef and his team did an amazing job, whilst the bar staff did their bit very well; and with “live band” Brassicks providing most enjoyable music, it was a wonderful social event. Oatley wines provided a great wine tasting session for the event on Tuesday afternoon. The major championship winners were the NSWVGA mens shield James Lyons (Richmond) with 41/38 for 79 stableford points and the Ladies Shield Jeanette Dunkin (Ryde Parramatta) with 39/41 for 80

stableford points. The joint winners of the RSL LIFECare scratch golf trophy were Bill Micallef (Morriset) and Barbara Foy (Beverley Park). Winners of the Irish Fourball on Monday were Dianne Gates (Kiama), Lorraine Jolley (Kiama) and Max Glanville (Longreef), Ray Newton (Nelson Bay) with 97 points. Friday’s 2BBB was taken out by Graeme and Jan Scobie from Branxton with 47 points. Pivotal to the success of this tournament is the contribution made by an army of volunteers without whom we could not get such large fields through in a timely manner and whose efforts are highly regarded by the competitors. MCVGC will provide a 9 hole shotgun start fun round and BBQ for the volunteers on 21 March.

q CHAMPIONS: Bil Micallef and Barbara Foy with Julie Woolard from RSL LIFECare in the centre.

24/2/16 Wednesday Twilight bowls was won by Margaret King, Rod King and Grant Bidgood who defeated Richard Laughton, Wendy Grainger and Ron Hourn by 24 shots to 8 for a +16. Runners up on the day with +10 Guy Rowe, Graeme Condie and Brad Johnson who defeated Glen Grainger, Wally Towers and Brad Johnson by 19 shots to 9. 27/2/16. Saturday Jackpot bowls was won by Ningbat Hutley, Jan Bartyn and Steve Locke who defeated Richard Laughton, Stewy Deery and Pete Mostyn by 29 shots to 12 for a + 17. Runners up with a + 5 Wendy Grainger, Bruce Moss and Ken Towers who defeated Freda Laughton, Shakey Mick Faye and Bob Dixon by 18 shots to 13 for a + 5. In the third triples game Mike Lynch, Faye Mason and John Bartyn defeated Guy Rowe, Val Lynch and Butch Hutley 17 shots to 14 for a + 3. Saturday also had two game of championship pairs. In the first game Ralph Turnbull and Ken Southern defeated Chris Whalan & Shane Reed in a very close game by 22 shots to 18. In the second game Kevin Reed and Leo Kierans defeated Bo Taylor and Robert Taylor 18 to 13 in what was another very close game. Don’t forget on 20 March we have a pink ribbon day supporting the cancer council. It is a nominated triples event and you do not have to be a registered bowler on the day. If you cannot get enough players to nominate a team we will find a team for you. Hi tea is included and the first game starts at 10 am. Dress is mufti. UNDER 12 DIV 2 MAITLAND DISTRICT JUNIORS - the young Sharks were winners by forfiet this week for the final round of the regular competition. They now have a chance finishing in the top 4, either second or third, to progress into the final series. Of mention for the season proper the marked improvement in the first year players was pleasing to say the least. Each week they would turn and try not only that they played for the team. Thank you to Lachlan Groot, Joshua Scott, Sam Wright, Max Long, Tom McInerney and Austin Battle. The others who played their second year Luke McCarthy, Zac Watt, Mitchell Nott, Jai “Curly” Nott, Joquain Viera and Seth Gregory helped with the experience and all together lead the young Sharks to a more than successful season. Particular mention to Luke McCarthy scoring 234 runs for the season at an average of 117. Bowling honours were spread throughout the team with Luke, Zac Watt, Lachlan Groot and Mitchell Nott capturing their fair share of victims for the season. Zac Watt and Luke McCarthy were Under 12 Dungog District representative players, well done, now holding the club in good stead within the district for being able to supply good, steady and strong players to the representative scene. As a coach of these boys, Colin McCarthy, can only praise them for their ability to listen and learn but more importantly play the game fairly and with a bit of passion at times. The parents of these boys were also extremely supportive and made the job of coaching the team a pleasure, according to the coach they affectionately call ‘Big Marn’.....thank you Zac Watt for that nickname. Lets see what these young Sharks can do next weekend in their elimination semi final. UNDER 13’s - VS Northern Suburbs Black - Northern Suburbs 0/140 defeated Karuah 8/26 UNDER 15’s - VS West Suburbs Karuah 7/102 defeated Western Suburbs 3/91. Sharks lost the toss and were

Western Suburbs were very slow with their over rate, only managing 19 overs out of the 25 allotted overs, being 7/102. Best with bat, Will Smith 34, Aiden Bills 31 and Ben Woolard 12. Sharks went into the field with a bit of confidence, but unfortunately their fielding let Western Suburbs back into the game, however with some strong bowling we managed to keep them 3/91. Best with ball, Caleb Grimshaw 2/10, Jordan Barry 1/4. Coach Mark Woolard urges all players to make it to training on Thursday at 4pm as we enter the final series, with one win away from a grand final spot. B GRADE DUNGOG DISTRICT VS Bunnies - Bunnies 5/64 defeated Karuah 9/59 played at Dungog High School on a very sticky wicket. Karuah batted first and were in trouble from the get go, being bowled out in the 27th over. Best with the bat, Toby Carrol 17, Will Smith 9 and Lucas Barry 8. Bunnies chased the runs down in the 18th over, best with ball, Brandon Watt 2/11, Lucas Barry 2/19 and Will Smith 1/14. In this very young B grade team,

they have been extremely competitive throughout the year. Captain, Nathan Grimshaw and senior playing group, Mark Woolard, Toby Carrol, Daniel Watt, Tom King and James Smith have been very impressed all year with how the younger boys in the team held their own and competed each week and never giving up. This now wraps up our B grade season for the year and we look forward to next season. A GRADE DUNGOG DISTRICT VS Farmers - Karuah 9/82 defeated by Farmers 3/86 - the Sharks won a toss and for a minute were not sure what to do....they batted first for a time in a while. They got off to a steady start to the day but were caught short on batting depth being dismissed in the 24th over for 82. Jim Drinkwater top scored with 26 and was supported with a few double figure scores along the way. All was not lost as they went into the field and a total of 82 was money in the bank and the opposition had to get it. The Farmers Vacy side went about that and were solid from the top, passing the total in the 21st over with the loss of only 3 wickets. The bowling ranks were a little dessimated this game, so the captain

looked towards a tried and true machine, straight out of the mothballs came Jimmy Drinkwater. There was a strong smell from the mothballs around the arena, with a mighty effort he delivered his first ball whilst the batsmen was rubbing his eyes from the smell of camphor hanging heavy in air. The batsmen has lobbed the ball to mid off for a well taken catch. Jimmy boy sent the batsmen to sheds with a well directed, “ON YOU’RE BIKE BUDDY”. With that lingering mothball smell still heavy in the air the batsmen was well disorientated from the burning in his eyes still he wasn’t exactly sure where the sheds were or the bike he was to get on! Well done Jimmy, the mothball legend finished with the fine figures of 1 over 1/1 and was heard to say coming off the field after the loss, “Skip, I’ve been waiting for the chance all year to show you I’ve still got it”. Thank goodness the Sharks move into the final series and his bowling career is back on hold. The Sharks at this stage finished equal 1st with Gresford for the minor premiership and depending on the quotions will determine who they will play in the elimination final next Saturday at Dungog. A few players back from injury and work committments this week weakened the team slightly, but not excusing this, next week with their return will hold the Sharks in good stead leading into the semi final and hopefully beyond. Tea Gardens Women’s Bowling Club By Lily SMITH

TUESDAY, 23 February: The Heat goes on (and on). There was one Semi Final Of our Pairs Open Championship played today. Loretta Baker defeated Robyn Webster. What a game that was! Over the marathon 32 ends played, the leader board kept changing with neither bowler willing to give an inch. On the second last end, Robyn was in the lead with a score of 24 – 22. Loretta dug deep and took 3 shots, on what was to be the last end, to win the match 25 – 24. Well played to both bowlers! Congratulations must go to Loretta for keeping her cool when things got tough. The second semi- final should take place on Thursday. Social Bowls: There was a good attendance today with 21 bowlers taking part. Concentration was difficult as all eyes were on the exciting semifinal match. The winners today with the highest score were, Wilma Drake, Bev Stephens and Maynie Roberts. In other news, Vicki Rankin and Lorraine Harvey competed in the Semi-Finals of the Newcastle District Open Pairs Championship today. Unfortunately they were defeated by a pair from Lambton Park who won with a score of 14 – 11. Thursday, 25 February: Due to the extreme heat our bowls programme was cancelled today.

CRICKET Karuah/Tea Gardens Cricket Club By Mark WOOLARD

KOOKABURRA Cricket Under 10’s played Western Suburbs Gold at McKeachies Run, for their final game for the season. Even though we only had six players, James, Isaac, Danielle, Kaitlyn, Thomas and Sam all played like champions. All players have come so far this season with all facets of their game improving from week to week. After winning the toss, Danielle sent our team into bowl and even though we didn’t get the win we played strongly. We bowled extremely well

TALENTED Athletes Bianca and Brendan Mason returned from the Regional Little Athletics Championships last weekend with a swag of medals, including 5 gold and 3 silvers between them. Held at the Hunter Stadium in Newcastle, the Bulahdelah teenagers qualified for the event with wins at the Zone Championships held earlier in the year. During the Regional meet, Bianca leapt her way to wins in both the triple and long jumps, her favourite field events. She also showed her talent on the track sprinting her way to silver medal position in the 100 metre event. Posting an impressive time of 12.75 seconds, Bianca narrowly missed the gold by the narrowest of margins. CONTINUED Page 17
