After the successful sale of the Boathouse Resort in 2013, Stuart and Vanessa have been employed with RSL Lifecare with Vanessa heading up customer service and Stuart selling houses for Tea Gardens Grange and being involved in marketing, expos and maintenance. “We are excited to again venture into our own business in the old Post Office, a building I have always loved and to be able to do this without leaving town is a further benefit to our family,” Stuart told Myall Coast News. He added, “We hope to bring a fresh, honest and vibrant vibe to real estate in the area extending trust, ethics and professionalism for our clients.” It has been an exciting and busy few weeks leading up to the official opening on Thursday, 1 October and Stuart and Vanessa could not have achieved so much without the contractors, family and friends who made themselves available to be part of this new venture. Lisa Hamilton from Dowling Real Estate will be coming on board to continue looking after the property management side of the business. In closing, Stuart said, “I wish to thank Heather Davy and Kim Bright for all their support and encouragement and both Vanessa and I wish these two ladies all the best for their future endeavours.” Myall Coast News looks forward to working closely with the Ray White office in Tea Gardens and conveys congratulations to Stuart and Vanessa .

By Dave BRAZIER EAGER to succeed and making a fantastic name for herself in the modeling, fashion and acting industries, there is one local young lady who is literally going leaps and bounds as she continues to expand her talents and popularity both here in Australia and Internationally. Tahlia Moffitt is a very self motivated 18 year old who has taken the catwalk by storm, and has already worked alongside many industry leaders like Imogen Anthony at prestigious events, such as the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in Sydney. Discovered on social media platform Instagram by an Agency after she attended a Music Festival in Sydney, initially it seemed like a daunting task to both Tahlia and her mother Suzy to launch into the unknown world of modeling. Tahlias mother recently told the Myall Coast News, “Whilst Tahlia left High School in year 11 and loves to do her own thing and is a real success story on her own, thankfully, London Management Group have taken Tahlia under their wing and have helped guide and manage her into some extremely successful roles.” “The future is really looking great for her modeling, acting and her own business career,” she said. Not only is Tahlia a successful model on the catwalk, she is also the face of clothing

store ‘Gingham and Heels’ and is regularly away from home modeling their range of female clothing and apparel. Tahlia has also featured on TV shows such as ‘Home and Away’ where she appeared as a regular extra playing a high school student, ‘The Devils Playground’ and a Holden Commercial. She has also appeared and had a main role in film clips for Australian Rap Artist ‘Allday’ and also Australian singer-songwriter ‘Zenya’, who has shared stages with industry giants like Justin Timberlake. If it didn’t appear that Tahlia is busy enough, she has also launched and manages her own business ‘Tahlia J Noir’, an online store offering “Black and white luxury lingerie, swim shoes and accessories from all over the world” according to her website. Both Internationally and Nationally she is a very popular young lady and is an excellent Ambassador for many other young people trying to break into the modeling and acting industries. With nearly 25,000 followers on her Instagram Social Networking page, and nearly 1200 followers on her Facebook profile, her career and growing popularity will certainly be in the spotlight for many years.

GIRAFFE Keepers have been trialling a new enrichment puzzle for Taronga’s giraffes. The animals are using their 45cm tongues to reach food treats placed inside a Perspex and wooden box with holes cut in the side. Senior giraffe keeper, Johny Wade said, “This enrichment item is designed to utilise the giraffe’s natural bio-tools - their tongues, to stimulate them physically and mentally by doing something out of the ordinary.” “The tongue of a giraffe is their portal to the world; they use them like we use our hands. Their tongues are prehensile so they use them to grab branches and leaves,” said Johny. “Their tongues are so dexterous they can tear leaves off branches that have thorns up to 10cm long. This means they get to feed on the leaves, which other animals find far too hostile to eat.” “The Perspex on the side of the box allows the giraffes to see the food inside and plan what they’ll do with it and how to get it out. It’s quite a new, weird looking enrichment item for them so thus far only the bravest giraffes have tested the water and given it a try.” “Nyota, our oldest giraffe, went straight for the box whereas our male Jimiyu was trying to get in from the wrong side. It’s very entertaining to watch.” The new puzzle box is part of the giraffe’s new enrichment schedule and will be given to the giraffes once a fortnight. Guests visiting the Zoo around 10:30 during the school holidays might be able to catch the giraffes with one of their puzzles of the day. Sadly giraffe numbers in the wild are continuing to decline. Visitors to Taronga can make a difference by purchasing Beads for Wildlife at one of Taronga’s retail stores. All profits go direct to giraffe conservation in Africa and Taronga supports world Giraffe Day on June 21. Myall Coast News is giving away one family pass valued over $130.00. Mr Guiney said there are many simple ways of reducing water consumption and encouraged locals to think about waterwise options for the summer. “Simple things like waiting until there is a full load of washing before using the machine may not seem like much, but when you multiply these savings by the 40,000 customers served by our water supplies, these small changes can make a huge difference.”

SES name

THE NSW State Emergency Service (SES) Karuah Valley Unit has changed its name to Stroud Unit in order to help attract new volunteer members and to better reflect its geographic area of responsibility. It is hoped that the renaming will enable the NSW SES to align itself more closely to the town of Stroud with the volunteer emergency service looking to establish a point of presence in the town, whilst maintaining its existing headquarters building at Booral. The Unit, originally known as the Stroud Unit, was established in the late 1980s. The 12 current members of the Unit are drawn from a number of locations including Girvan, Allworth, Booral, Stroud, Gymea Bay, Limeburners Creek and Pindimar. The Stroud Unit's volunteer members train once a week on a Monday night at their Booral facility to ensure they have the skills required to assist local communities to deal with the impacts of floods, storms and even tsunami. The Stroud Unit covers approximately half the land mass of the Great Lakes Council area and includes Wards River to Limeburner’s Creek, across to Bulahdelah and over to the Tea Gardens/Hawks Nest area. NSW SES Mid North Coast Region Controller, Mr Stephen Hart said, “There are a number of benefits for the community and our members with the name change. Looking forward we have plans in place to increase our capability to respond to severe weather events in the southern part of the Lower Mid North Coast, which includes establishing a point of presence in Stroud, vehicle upgrades and implementing strategies to increase the Stroud Unit’s membership.” Earlier this year the Unit played a key role in helping the Stroud and Tea Gardens communities deal with the affects the April super storm. During the nine day operation the Unit was central in responding to over 400 requests for assistance relating to property damage and emergency assistance in the Tea Gardens and Stroud areas. NSW SES Stroud Unit Controller, Mr Stephen Harris said, “The April super storm helped to highlight the significant storm and flood risks that exist in the area and the need for us to increase the membership of the Stroud Unit, so we can continue to provide the emergency services local communities in the area expect from us.” If you'd like to join the Stroud SES Unit contact the NSW SES volunteer hotline 1800 201 000 or more information - www. ses.nsw.gov.au/volunteering Alternatively come along to the training session at 2756 Booral Road, Booral on Monday nights at 7pm.

Polish to Festival MYALL U3A is bringing the Polish Song and Dance Ensemble, Lajkonik, to the Myall River Festival on Saturday 31 October.

They will make several appearances on stage during the Festival prior to their 2pm concert on Sunday 1 November at the

musicians, children and revellers. The present day Lajkonik song and dance troupe will add colour and cultural diversity to the Myall River Festival. Dressed in their colourful national costumes, they will perform traditional Polish songs and dances to the music of accordion player Zuzi. The group’s performance in Tea Gardens is spearheaded by Myall U3A President, Chris Klimek. “The interest and enthusiasm my recent lectures on Poland received,” says Chris, “encouraged me to bring this live performance. This way, I believe our community could learn and experience some of Poland’s tradition and culture.” Don’t miss this unique performance. Tickets at $25.00 per person are available at the Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest Pharmacies from the 6 October.

Marine Drive, the focus of attention

By Gordon GRAINGER

THE community may be under the impression that not much is happening along the foreshore of Marine Drive and that concentration has been on the road works between Maxwell and Charles Streets. Visually that is true, however I am pleased to advise that as a member of the Foreshore Reference Group, there has been some paddling under the water and results are beginning to appear. Council have installed 5 new garbage bins, which have a much larger capacity than the red and grey topped bins. They have been decorated by attractive local photographs and fitted with a wave top configuration which will also be a feature of the proposed shelters. As funding permits, more will be installed along the foreshore. Council has also installed a new, single unit ferry timetable to replace the previous individual boards and should be a greater convenience to ferry passengers. Two Port Jackson Fig trees are here in Tea Gardens waiting for their new home and will be planted as soon as protective tree guards are available which are to be

produced by the T. G. Men’s’ Shed. It is our objective to have these trees enclosed by seating surrounds as soon as practical and Council are currently sourcing a supplier. A search is underway to source more mature trees to replace those trees identified for removal, however they will remain in place until replacements are located and new shelters are installed. Council are negotiating with a supplier for a number of new shelters which will incorporate a wave roof design, and we hope that orders can be placed in the near future. They will provide much needed shelter to ferry passengers, visitors and residents.

I am glad to report the ugly and dangerous ferry wharf deck is scheduled for resurfacing and we hope completion will be achieved before the Riverside Festival to be held 31 October. The new wharf announced prior to the last State election is still on the wish list and is unlikely to be started until next year. This despite being approved under the Better Boating Program and funding announced through State Government. The unsightly power poles will remain along the waterfront for the foreseeable future and suggestions have been

proposed to illustrate those poles in similar fashion to other communities along the coast. The suggestion does have a great deal of support from the community. The Reference Group is committed to continue working with Council in achieving a great outcome for our foreshore. We intend providing sufficient and attractive shelters, shade trees, barbeque sites and seating along the riverbank. The aim is to bring a cosmopolitan ambience with outdoor areas for the restaurants and coffee shops along the strip and beautify the current plain concrete blisters on the corners of Maxwell and Marine Drive. Something we can all call ours, be proud of and all agree that “IT IS BETTER BY THE MYALL.”

WHEN the sun finally came out last weekend and the rain clouds started to disperse, many holiday makers and locals were instantly outside and enjoying all the Myall Coast has to offer. With some locals recording up to 120mm of rain in their gauges over the last week, the sunshine and fair conditions was almost too hard to ignore for many who hit the beaches and the riverside for some fantastic time with family and friends. Pictured at the Jetty near the boat ramp at Tea Gardens on Saturday, Sarah Crouch along with Nathan, Jacob and Sienna Wilson, visiting from Rutherford couldn’t wipe the smiles from their faces

as they attempted to catch the big one. Camping at Mungo Brush, Sarah told Myall Coast News, “We absolutely love it up here. We normally camp at the Riverside Camping grounds but ventured a bit further this time to Mungo Brush.” “We have all had such a great time, much better though now with the rain gone though of course,” she said. Following the Wilsons family fishing success were of course the ever present pelicans who were eager for an easy feed of fish themselves. At Bennetts Beach approximately 100 people were beachside, venturing in between the flags under the guidance of the lifesavers on patrol, while others enjoyed a quiet picnic at the tables near the carpark.

RETIRED accountant Daniel Purcell has two good reasons to be thankful for cuttingedge research and clinical treatment taking place in the Hunter. The 87-year-old Adamstown Heights resident endured two strokes within 15 months, was treated with different clot-removal therapies at John Hunter Hospital and made complete recoveries. For the first stroke, which occurred while walking through a park, Mr Purcell was deemed a suitable candidate for the TASTE trial being led by

Many families were spotted carrying all the normal summer related beach items from the Caravan Park up to the beach, including towels, body boards, chairs and umbrellas in a family convoy along the footpaths. Over at Jimmys Beach the carpark was closed and barricaded off forcing many to park on the narrow roadside heading into Jimmys. As delighted children played on the playground, there was a lot of activity at the water side with many aquatic action lovers trying to outperform each others maneuvers on various water crafts. Summer is coming and the visitors this school holiday period that Myall Coast News spoke to are all set to return once again.

LOCAL GOVERNMENT CONFERENCE

In October, the General Manager and I will attend the NSW Local Government Conference in Sydney. This Conference is held every year and is very valuable, we can represent the interests of regional NSW residents much better when we are united with the other NSW councils. We also benefit greatly from networking and the exchange of ideas with other councils.

NEW LOOK WEBSITE

We have just completed an upgrade to Council’s website and we would like to hear your feedback. Our address is just the same (www.greatlakes. nsw.gov.au), but the whole site has been revamped - things are much easier to find, the search function is much better and it’s easier to do online business with us. Please have a browse and let us know if you have any comments or suggestions - we are always keen to keep improving things.

AUSTRALIA DAY AWARDS

The Australia Day Awards for Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year and Sportsperson of Year are now open for nominations, so please consider nominating someone special you know. Our Australia Day Awards in the Great Lakes will be expanded to include three new awards for arts and culture. By including arts and culture in the Awards we hope to raise the profile of the creative arts in our region. Nominations are open now, please nominate yourself or a friend - these awards are very prestigious.

WOMEN’S SHELTER TO GO AHEAD

There has been a sustained, whole-of-community effort to establish a women’s shelter in Forster Tuncurry over many years. I remember well the work began almost 20 years ago. So we are celebrating last month’s announcement that a lease has been signed on a property to provide a refuge for women and children escaping domestic violence. To everyone who helped make this a reality - and there are too many to name here, but the Community Centre, the NSW Government and many of our community clubs deserve a big credit the community is very grateful and thanks you.

Tonga Water Board are to visit REPRESENTATIVES from the Tonga Water Board will be in the Manning and Great Lakes next week as part of an international program which sees MidCoast Water supporting the improvement of water management practices in developing nations. Through a twinning arrangement that has been supported by the Asian Development Bank, MidCoast Water has been supporting the development of the Tonga Water Board, the Samoa Water Authority and the Independent Water Supplies Association of Samoa. “The main aim of the twinning partnership is to enhance the skills, service delivery and operational efficiency of utilities in developing countries,” MidCoast Water’s acting general manager Brendan Guiney explained. Visiting MidCoast Water from September 24 to October 1 will be the Tonga Water Board’s administration and customer services manager Elisiva Tapueluelu and finance manager

Kolopeaua Tonga. During their time in the area they are expected to split their time between MidCoast Water’s Forster and Taree offices and visit several sites, including the Bootawa Water Treatment Plant. Mr Guiney said the visitors will primarily be looking at the areas of setting fees and charges for water, customer service and complaints management. As a result of the success of the work MidCoast Water has undertaken with the Tonga Water Board, the relationship has continued beyond its initial two year timeframe. “We had talks with the CEO of the Tonga Water Board, Mr Saimone Pita Helu, when he visited us in 2014 and he expressed his desire to see the relationship continue beyond the initial timeframe indicated by the Asia Development Bank.” Mr Guiney said the MidCoast Water board endorsed a continuation of the partnership and the board’s chairperson, Cr Tony Summers, discussed the terms of

extension with representatives from the Tonga Water Board during a visit he will made to the Pacific Island later at the end of 2014. The twinning arrangement has included hosting visits from both Tonga and Samoa and allowing their representatives to learn more about the Australian water industry and our work practices. In turn, MidCoast Water representatives have travelled to both Tonga and Samoa to look at how the two utilities operate and identify activities that will improve performance in key areas. The relationships are further developed by regular phone and email contact Mr Guiney explained. “Some of the issues affecting Pacific utilities include water losses of 40 to 50 per cent, intermittent water supplies and often basic, or little or no reticulated sewerage. “The Tongan project is focussing on improving performance in two key areas reducing water loss and implementation of asset management.”

The asparagus needed careful removal from the ground to ensure the heart of the weed was removed, then it was bagged and disposed of. It was hard working on knees in confined areas under bush, fallen trees and woodpiles. Horticulturalist Christian Patterson was in town to lend a hand, as was Mel Ledgett a bush regenerator who stopped off en route to her holiday. A potential new volunteer visited the working area and was keen to join the group with his family, who already have some experience in bush weeding. competition at the Tea Gardens Hotel this coming long weekend from Friday 2 October. Described as the World’s Biggest Display of Bat Flats, the judging will take place from 5.00pm on Friday in the Silver Dolphin Room. The competition has a total prize pool valued at Ten Thousand Dollars and with entries from around Australia; the First Prize of Five Thousand Dollars will be seen as a breakthrough in the quest to find the Best Bat Flat in the country. The Myall River Art Walk Group has spent almost a year in planning and engaged the services of renowned artist and former director of Maitland Regional Art Gallery Joe Eisenberg as

the Judge. Joe’s flamboyant style and nature stand him in good stead to select the final seven prizes from a pool of sixty works selected by a panel. The idea of providing accommodation for microbats is proving a popular notion, with many people seeing the advantage of a small native animal which can consume half its weight in mozzies every night. At the same time, the much neglected under the eaves area can be decorated in as many ways as the imagination allows. Myall River Art Walk spokesperson David Matheson commented, “This is Art with Benefits, not only do the Flats give people the chance to have something beautiful and unique decorating their homes but we also help to reduce the mosquito population which has become a problem in so many towns.” Spring sees the re-emergence

of the microbats from winter hibernation and there are many reports of success in the Myall Lakes area with people reporting microbats moving in to bat flats at Pindimar, Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest. To find out more and have a look at what could be hanging under your eaves, get along to the Tea Gardens Hotel Silver Dolphin Room from Friday 2 October right through to Monday 5 October.

The Myall Coast News reported back in April that council are aware of the issue and that no timeframe was nominated to repair the existing issues. Andrew Staniland from Great Lakes Council at that stage had advised the Myall Coast News that a number of issues had been identified and that the equipment should not be used. “Inspectors have identified finger entrapment and rust issues with the equipment and it has been barricaded to prevent use,” he said. Notice of Public Exhibition Planning Proposal for changes to Great Lakes Local Environmental Plan 2014

Council is exhibiting a Planning Proposal (PP) which will make changes to Great Lakes Local Environmental Plan 2014. The intended outcomes of the PP are: • Boundary realignments – to allow for minor boundary adjustments in all land use zones where one or both lots do not meet the minimum lot size for that zone. No additional lots or dwelling entitlements will be created. • Minimum lot size for certain land in split zones – to allow for the subdivision of land which has two land use zones where the resulting lot/s do not meet the minimum lot size for that zone. • Amendments to existing clause: Ecological protection subdivision – to allow a development lot created as part of an ecological offset subdivision in an unsewered area to have a minimum area of 1ha instead of 2ha. Also to ensure development lot/s created by ecological offset subdivision can have a house built on them. • Amendments to clause 4.1A Exceptions to minimum lot sizes for certain residential development - Where one application is received for subdivision and residential structures in the RU5 Village Zone of Smiths Lake, a minimum lot size of 500sqm may be allowed in exceptional circumstances. The Minister has delegated the making of the Local Environmental Plan to Council. Exhibition Period and Public Submissions The PP and supporting documents may be inspected as follows: Place:

This event has now been held for the last two seasons in Tea Gardens and was won last season by Myall Masters and is now one of the biggest State carnivals on their programme. Great Lakes Council have also approved Myall Masters to conduct a Learn to Swim douse at Tea Gardens pool and we will advise the date in a later article suffice to say that this is a must if you need assistance with Learning to Swim.

BULAHDELAH Tennis Club will pink up for Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA)’s annual Pink Sports Day on Saturday the 3 October.
