Houses of Sound

Pierre Berthet’s love of environmental sounds has resulted in the sound installation Houses of Sound. Two wires connect two huts made of Corten steel on the banks of the Dommel. These wires are connected to exciters and tin can resonators in a network of wires among the trees around the installation. Inputs (mainly sine waves) transmitted through the exciters make the wires tremble, causing vibrations that create a buzzing resonance in the huts and cans. The resonances can be heard both inside the huts and in the area around them, and give a sense of being swallowed up by sound. Visitors decide where and how they want to immerse themselves in the constantly changing sound image of the sound installation. The artist demonstrates a great respect for the environment: Houses of Sound creates a visual and acoustic bridge between the two banks of the river.

Pierre Berthet heeft een zwak voor omgevingsgeluiden, wat zich eveneens vertaalt in de klankinstallatie Houses of Sound. Twee stalen draden verbinden twee huisjes in Cortenstaal op de oevers van de Dommel. Deze draden staan in verbinding met exciters en blikken tonnen die in een netwerk van draden tussen de bomen rondom de installatie werden opgehangen. Signalen (hoofdzakelijk sinusgolven) doen de draden in het netwerk trillen, waardoor vibraties zoemend resoneren in de huisjes en de tonnen.

De resonanties die zowel in de omgeving als binnenin de huisjes hoorbaar zijn, geven de luisteraar het gevoel volledig in de klank opgenomen te worden. Bezoekers bepalen zelf waar en hoe ze zichzelf onderdompelen in de constant wisselende sound van deze installatie. Het respect dat de klankkunstenaar voor de omgeving toonde is groot: Houses of Sound slaat akoestisch en visueel een brug tussen de beide oevers van de rivier.

Kanariestudio

40 canaries live permanently in what seems to be a completely ordinary bird cage. With the birds as musicians, sound images arise in and around the installation created by the chirping of the birds and everyday sounds such as fluttering, eating or drinking and the interaction with the environment outside the cage. The totality of what you hear consists of electro-acoustic music created with microphones, amplifiers and speakers. Microphones at various locations in the Kanariestudio constantly record the sound of the birds. In the original concept, electronic sound effects were added to the recorded sounds and the result was broadcast through the speakers in the wall of the cage. In 2012 the sound system was redesigned by Paul Craenen: in the new setup, the sounds in the cage, from birdsong to pecking at the food bowls, are continuously analysed. Depending on the volume and pitch of the sounds, sine wave generators produce ‘chirping’ sounds that blend completely with the singing of the birds.

Remaining faithful to the original concept, the sound image changes constantly depending on the input. By walking slowly around the cage, visitors hear a different sound image depending on where they are listening: an image that is always unique and ever-changing. Het klinkende totaalbeeld bestaat uit elektroakoestische muziek die met behulp van microfoons, versterkers en luidsprekers tot stand komt.

Microfoons op verschillende plaatsen in de Kanariestudio registreren ononderbroken het geluid van de vogels. In het oorspronkelijke concept werden aan de gecapteerde geluiden elektronische klankeffecten toegevoegd en op die manier weergegeven door luidsprekers in de wand van de volière. In 2012 werd het geluidssysteem herzien door Paul Craenen: in de nieuwe opstelling worden de geluiden in de kooi, van vogelzang tot gepik op voederbakjes, continu geanalyseerd. Op basis van de sterkte en de toonhoogte van de geluiden, genereren sinusgeneratoren ‘fluitende’ geluiden die zich volledig vermengen met de vogelzang. Getrouw aan het originele concept, wisselt het klankbeeld voortdurend naargelang de input. Door langzaam rondom de volière te wandelen krijgt het publiek afhankelijk van de plaats waar men luistert een ander muzikaal beeld, telkens uniek en nooit hetzelfde. Het Geheim van Horst

One of the most striking sounds in a forest is a woodpecker tapping against a tree trunk. Listeners often try to figure out where the sound is coming from in the hope of spotting the bird. Sometimes they are lucky, but sometimes not: the sound stops and there is nothing to be seen but the flicker of a bird flying away.

Inspired by this idea, Horst Rickels used his permanent sound installation in Klankenbos to try and create a relationship similar to the one that exists between an instrument and a musician in the form of a tree played by woodpeckers. With a short burst of tapping from woodpeckers in five carefully selected trees, the installation Het Geheim van Horst (Horst’s Secret) sows uncertainty and doubt among visitors to the wood: is that a real woodpecker or one of the art installations? The spirit of the moment will decide.

When the woodpecker stops tapping at one tree, the listener hears another burst of tapping from a different direction. Is there a woodpecker in that tree? Has it moved? Could there be more than one woodpecker? The sound they first heard gains a spatial quality, widens, becomes rhythmic and after briefly becoming synchronised, it falls silent. This sound installation can be heard every fifteen minutes during the day.

Het geroffel van een specht tegen een boom is een van de meest markante bosgeluiden.

Wie het hoort, probeert vaak tevergeefs de richting van het geluid te achterhalen met als doel de specht onder ogen te krijgen. Horst Rickels ziet een verband tussen enerzijds de manier waarop spechten bomen bespelen en anderzijds de relatie tussen muzikanten en hun instrumenten.

Door een kortstondig spel van spechtengeroffel in vijf zorgvuldig geselecteerde bomen zet de klankinstallatie Het Geheim van Horst het publiek aan tot twijfel en onzekerheid: gaat het nu om de natuur of om een artistieke ingreep? Na een plotselinge roffel, hoort de luisteraar een volgende roffel uit een andere richting. Zit er een specht?

Heeft die specht zich verplaatst? Opeens gaat het geroffel verder. Zit er misschien meer dan één specht? Het aanvankelijke geluid krijgt een ruimtelijke dimensie, zwelt aan, wordt ritmisch en maakt na een vluchtige synchronisatie opnieuw plaats voor stilte. Overdag kan men deze klankinstallatie om het kwartier horen.

Springtime in a Small Town

Peter Bosch and Simone Simons’ vibration projects build on Nikola Tesla’s experiments with vibrations. Their ‘vibro machines’ are made up of a complex system of influencing resonances. Motor speeds and the frequencies of bouncing constructions are tuned in such a way that the smallest change can produce unpredictable effects. The movements and sounds that come out of the installation sometimes shift imperceptibly from order to chaos and back again. The computer plays a paradoxical role in the installations, because although it controls the mechanical components (oscillators), it is unable to compensate for the physical consequences of decisions that are made.

Springtime in a Small Town introduces a new phase in a series of vibrating projects. What makes this work different from its predecessors is the environment: the boxes and springs have left the closed space of the museum behind and headed off into the woods. The sound is less dynamic, but mixes perfectly with the sound of the surroundings. The organic boxes made of unfinished wood seem to be at home among the trees. This gives the project, which is technically no different from its predecessors, a completely different, almost meditative feel.

In de kunstprojecten van Peter Bosch en Simone Simons leven de trillingsexperimenten van Nikola Tesla voort. De ‘trilmachines’ die zij ontwikkelen vormen een complex systeem waarbinnen verschillende aanwezige resonanties elkaar beïnvloeden. Motorsnelheden en eigenfrequenties van verende constructies worden zodanig op elkaar afgestemd dat zeer kleine veranderingen tot onvoorspelbare uitkomsten kunnen leiden. De bewegingen en geluiden die hierbij ontstaan gaan soms onmerkbaar over van orde in chaos en omgekeerd. De computer vervult hierbij een paradoxale rol. Enerzijds bestuurt hij mechanische componenten (elektromotoren), anderzijds verkeert hij in de onmogelijkheid om de natuurkundige gevolgen van beslissingen te kunnen voorzien.

Springtime in a Small Town betekent een nieuwe fase in een serie trilprojecten. Wat het werk anders maakt dan alle voorgangers is de omgeving: de kisten en spiraalveren hebben het besloten terrein van de expositieruimte verlaten en ingeruild voor het bos. Het geluid is minder dynamisch, maar mengt perfect met de omgevingsgeluiden. De organische ruwhouten kisten lijken zelfs in het bos thuis te horen. Zo verkrijgt het project, dat technisch niet afwijkt van voorlopers, een heel andere, welhaast meditatieve lading. Het geluid zwelt aan of neemt af in

Konversation

Konversation consists of two parts: on a bare patch of ground in the wood, seven red boxes sprout from the ground like plants, while a row of five more grows along the edge of the path.

Although there is no obvious connection between them, they react to each other, exchanging signs and sounds: they are having a conversation.

In the group of seven objects, three of the red boxes use orchestral sounds that vary in pitch and timbre depending how close to them you stand. Visitors can record the sounds of the surroundings or their own voice with the other four boxes. If you stand close to the microphone and sing or speak into it loudly enough, a short recording will be made automatically while the little red light is on.

The five objects along the path react to passers-by. The sounds depend on the distance between the passers-by and the boxes and the speed at which they pass. The closer one approaches, the louder and more prominent the sound will be, with intensity decreasing at the middle of the path or on the other side. Hence people strolling slowly by evoke lingering, fretful sounds. Joggers and people in a hurry generate fresh, lively noises. The displays give corresponding readings between 0 and 9.

Konversation bestaat uit twee delen: in een kale nis in het bos schieten een groep van zeven rode kasten als planten uit de bodem, vijf andere groeien dan weer langs het wandelpad. Hoewel ze niet rechtstreeks met elkaar verbonden lijken, reageren ze op elkaar. Ze wisselen tekens en geluiden uit: ze converseren.

In de groep van zeven objecten gebruiken drie rode kasten orkestklanken. Deze variëren in toonhoogte en klankkleur naargelang men dichter of verder staat. Met de vier andere kasten kan het publiek eigen stem- of omgevingsgeluiden opnemen. Wanneer men dichtbij staat en voldoende luid in de microfoon zingt of praat, wordt automatisch een kortstondige opname gestart terwijl een klein, rood lampje brandt.

De rij van vijf objecten langs het bospad reageert op passanten. De geluiden zijn afhankelijk van de afstand en snelheid ten opzichte van de kastjes. Hoe dichter men komt, hoe luider en prominenter de klank, terwijl in het midden van het pad of aan de overkant de intensiteit afneemt. Zo wekken trage voorbijgangers slepende, zeurderige geluiden op.

Snelle joggers of haastige wandelaars brengen dan weer frisse en levendige klanken teweeg. De displays geven overeenkomstig cijfers tussen 0 en 9 weer.

Activating the installation results in a unique conversation each time, based on coincidence, material provided by the surroundings and use of the installation in the course of the day. A lot of coming and going will produce dynamic results and vice versa.

Even if there is nobody around, the installation sometimes reacts to ambient sounds, but it needs activity to generate an interesting ‘konversation’.

Door de installatie te activeren ontstaat telkens een uniek samenspel op basis van toeval, het aangeleverde materiaal uit de omgeving en het gebruik van de installatie tijdens de dag. Veel passage en activering monden uit in een dynamisch resultaat en omgekeerd. Zelfs wanneer niemand in de buurt is, reageert de installatie soms op basis van omgevingsgeluiden. Ze heeft echter activiteit nodig om een interessante ‘konversation’ te genereren.

Oorsprong

At first sight, the sound installation Oorsprong (Dutch for ‘Origin’) seems to be nothing more than a long, straight tube of corten steel. However this foreign object in the landscape, 16 metres long and 1.9 metres in diameter, is actually a giant flute. On the closed-off side, a wind machine blows a high volume of air into the flute at low pressure. The other side of the tube – the body of the flute – is open, but can be closed off with a round door that allows visitors to enter the installation. As soon as they step inside, a movement sensor activates the installation and they feel intense vibrations coursing through their bodies. With the door closed, the sound is completely different, particularly in the middle of the flute. At the other end of the flute, a little soft light penetrates from above and there is contact with the outside world. This is the lip plate, an opening to the outside where the sound is generated the same way as it would be with a recorder or organ pipe. Hans van Koolwijk takes the ears of visitors right inside a flute for the first time, to the place where the vibrations are strongest: a place where they step right into the origins of sound.

De klankinstallatie Oorsprong lijkt bij een eerste aanblik niet meer dan een lange, rechte buis uit cortenstaal. Met 16 meter lengte en 1,9 meter doorsnede functioneert het omgevingsvreemde object echter als een gigantische fluit. Aan de gesloten kant blaast een windmachine veel wind onder lage druk de fluit in. De andere kant, het corpus, is open, maar afsluitbaar met een ronde deur waarlangs het publiek de installatie kan binnengaan. Zodra bezoekers de buis inlopen activeert een bewegingsmelder de installatie en ervaren ze hevige vibraties doorheen het hele lichaam. Met een gesloten deur wordt de klank heel anders, vooral in het midden van de fluit. Aan de andere kant van het corpus schijnt bovenaan vaag licht en is er contact met de buitenwereld.

Op die plaats zit het labium, een opening naar buiten waar de klank ontstaat, zoals in een blokfluit of orgelpijp.

De oren van bezoekers worden door Van Koolwijk voor het eerst naar het binnenste van een fluit gebracht, waar de trillingen het hevigst zijn.

Tacet

This sound-insulating glass cube marks the landscape both visually and acoustically. It is only accessible through a small underground passage: the striking absence of sound leads the visitor to a conscious experience of silence in surroundings that are no different visually from outside the cube. The transparency of the glass, the carefully selected location and the choice of corten steel and rough wood finishings to integrate the installation into the landscape, reinforce this perception.

The design of the sound installation Tacet for Klankenbos was indirectly inspired by John Cage’s controversial composition 4’33”, consisting of three parts that are all entitled ‘tacet’ (Latin for ‘remains silent’). Shortly before the creation of the composition, the composer visited a completely sound-proof room. To his surprise, he could still hear a high and a low tone, that turned out to come from his own body.

This experience and the influence of Eastern philosophy provided John Cage with absolute proof that silence cannot exist without its complement, sound. Just as 4’33” rejects the usual conventions of classical music, the sound installation Tacet forms a conceptual and material statement in Klankenbos.

Een geluidsarme, glazen kubus, die ondergronds toegankelijk is, drukt een visuele en akoestische stempel op de omgeving. De aanzienlijke afwezigheid van geluid wijst de bezoeker in de installatie op de stilte en het bewust ervaren hiervan, terwijl de visuele impressie van de omgeving ongewijzigd blijft. De transparantie van het glas, de met zorg bepaalde locatie, het gebruik van corstenstaal en ruw hout voor een natuurlijke integratie, versterken deze ervaring.

Het ontwerp van de klankinstallatie Tacet voor Klankenbos werd zijdelings geïnspireerd door de controversiële compositie 4’33’’ van John Cage, een werk dat uit drie delen ‘tacet’ (Latijn voor ‘het is stil’) bestaat. Kort voor de creatie van 4’33” bezocht de baanbrekende componist een ‘geluidloze’ ruimte. Tot zijn verbazing hoorde hij toch nog een hoge en een lage toon, die afkomstig bleken van zijn eigen lichaam. Die ervaring en het Oosterse denken indachtig, vormden voor Cage het absolute bewijs dat stilte niet bestaat zonder het complement geluid. Zoals 4’33’’ afweek van de gebruikelijke conventies binnen de klassieke muziek, vormt de klankinstallatie Tacet een conceptueel en materieel statement in Klankenbos.

Wind Zylinder

The kinetic sound installation Wind Zylinder hangs inconspicuously in a tree. The object consists of vertically and horizontally rotating axes, two half discs made of steel, steel blades and clappers.

The wind makes the object in the tree move, creating sound. In calm weather everything moves gently, but strong winds create surprising sounds. This work has a special place in the collection of sound installations because it was the first piece only to use the energy present in nature.

Bernward Frank opted for monumental steel with a rusty patina for this piece. He believes that large, heavy designs can perform miracles of perception.

Since only a breath of wind is needed to set the construction in motion, visitors are awed by nature and intrigued by its laws.

Frank believes that nature has a magical or divine aspect, and that art can reveal something of this.

De kinetische klankinstallatie Wind Zylinder hangt onopvallend in een boom in Klankenbos. Het object bestaat uit een verticale en horizontale roterende as, stalen lamellen en klepels.

Door ophanging krijgt de wind de kans om de installatie tot beweging te brengen, waardoor klank ontstaat.

Bij rustig weer beweegt alles zachtjes, terwijl stevige wind voor verrassende klankbeelden zorgt. Het werk neemt een bijzondere plaats in binnen de collectie klankinstallaties omdat het de eerste creatie is die alleen maar gebruik maakt van natuurlijke energie.

Bernward Frank koos voor zijn werk een monumentale stalen vorm met roestig patina. Een groot, zwaar ontwerp kan volgens hem wonderen doen in de waarneming. Aangezien er slechts een vleugje wind volstaat om zulke constructie in beweging te zetten, raakt de toeschouwer verwonderd door de natuur en haar wetten. Natuur is voor Frank iets magisch of goddelijks en hij meent dat kunst daarvan iets zichtbaar kan maken.

Radio Forest

Amy Franceschini and Stijn Schiffeleers designed Radio Forest in 2005 as a radio studio to broadcast the atmosphere of the wood. In 2009, architect and artist Koen Deprez (Deprez&Verelst) transformed the pavilion by slicing it in two. Then he raised the upper part and placed a layer of glass in between. Radio Forest functions at present as a station for workshops as well as a display window for the mobile sound installations Muziekdozen (2005)

by Moniek Darge, FluisterOren (2005) by Baudouin Oosterlynck and Musiscopes (2007) by Eric Van Osselaer.

Koen Deprez is often inspired by literature when designing his architectural projects. For the transformation of Radio Forest, he used the tale of The Bremen Town Musicians as source of inspiration. By doing so, the artist intended to link literature to sound and introduce a narrative element to Klankenbos.

The Bremen Town Musicians is a folk tale recorded by the Brothers Grimm. In the story a donkey, a dog, a cat, and a rooster escape the masters who mistreat them. They decide to go to Bremen and make a living there as musicians. On the way, they pass a cottage with the lights on: a robbers’ hideout. The animals devise a plan to scare away the robbers, and it works out. The

Radio Forest werd in 2005 door Amy Franceschini en Stijn Schiffeleers ontworpen als radiostudio om de sferen van het bos de wereld in te sturen. In 2009 transformeerde architect en kunstenaar Koen Deprez (Deprez&Verelst) het paviljoen door het simpelweg te halveren, op te krikken en er een glazen band tussen te plaatsen.

Intussen is Radio Forest niet enkel uitvalsbasis voor allerlei interactieve doeactiviteiten in Klankenbos, maar ook het uitstalraam voor de mobiele klankinstallatie Muziekdozen (2005) van Moniek Darge, FluisterOren (2005) van Baudouin, Oosterlynck en Musiscopes (2007) van Eric Van Osselaer.

Koen Deprez legt zich vaak toe op literatuur bij het ontwerpen van zijn architectuur. Voor de transformatie van Radio Forest ligt het verhaal van de Bremer Stadsmuzikanten aan de basis van de artistieke ingreep.

Op deze manier tracht de kunstenaar literatuur terug aan het klinkende te koppelen en een narratief element in Klankenbos te introduceren.

Het sprookje van De Bremer Stadsmuzikanten werd opgetekend door de gebroeders Grimm in Kinder- und Hausmärchen. Het verhaal vertelt over vier dieren - een ezel, een hond, een kat en een haan - die hun baasjes ontvluchten en als stadsmuzikanten aan de slag gaan. Samen ondernemen ze een lange reis naar Bremen.

animals move into the cottage and live there happily ever after – and they never make it to Bremen.

The idea of the four animals standing on each others’ backs in a kind of staircase and the initial typology of the building gave Koen Deprez two ideas. He created a staircase in four parts as a sculpture that connects Klankenbos to Radio Forest. In addition, he lifted the upper part of the building after slicing it in half horizontally. The first intervention preserved the original character of Radio Forest, whereas the second introduced sudden transparency – by day and night – allowing visitors to look both in and out, so that Radio Forest and Klankenbos communicate with each other. This apparently simple process is both lucid and striking.

Door deze ene beweging bleef het oorspronkelijke karakter van Radio Forest bewaard, terwijl de plotselinge transparantie (ook ’s nachts) zorgt voor in- en uitkijk. Hierdoor communiceert de voormalige radiostudio met Klankenbos. Het ogenschijnlijk eenvoudige proces is helder en ingrijpend.

Het Oor van Noach

The Dommel in Neerpelt looks like a mere scribble on a map of the area. But if you go to the bank of the river and really look and listen, you will realize that the stream is the sum of a great number of events: millions of splashing waves, rolling pebbles, floating leaves, nibbling fish, etc.

In turn they are made up of molecules and atoms in an endless, restless flow.

Het Oor van Noach (Noah’s Ear) makes the identity of the Dommel audible. The sound installation exists of a wooden boat floating on the river. It is connected to a long, bent armature that ends in a trumpet-like bell on the bank. The higher the water level, the deeper Noah’s Ear bends towards the ground. Like the needle of a record player running along its groove, the Ear explores the river. The forces of nature with which the unpredictable Dommel bombards the little boat are transformed into sound, partly with the help of a water wheel. These sounds emerge from the trumpet bell on the bank.

Noah’s Ear makes three kinds of sound that refer to the materials of which it is made and the water in which it is installed: the knocking of a woodblock, the shaking of a metal cymbal and the lapping of water. As the water level of the river rises, the sound changes and intensifies.

Op een landkaart lijkt de Dommel ter hoogte van Neerpelt niet meer dan een kronkelende pennenstreek.

Wanneer men de rivier echter van dichtbij bekijkt en beluistert, blijkt dat deze waterloop de manifestatie is van een optelsom van gebeurtenissen: miljoenen klotsende watergolfjes, rollende stenen, drijvende bladeren, happende vissen, … Deze bestaan op hun beurt dan weer uit moleculen en atomen in een eindeloze, rusteloze stroom.

Het Oor van Noach maakt het wezen van de Dommel hoorbaar. De klankinstallatie bestaat uit een houten schuit die in de Dommel dobbert.

Het geheel is verbonden met een lange geknikte arm en mondt uit op de oever in een trompetvorm. Hoe hoger het water staat, hoe dieper het Oor van Noach buigt. Zoals de naald van een platenspeler de groef van een langspeelplaat volgt, zo tast het Oor het stromende water af.

De krachten die de wispelturige Dommel uitoefent op de schuit worden mede door een waterrad omgezet in geluid en verlaten het object via de hoorn op het land. Het Oor van Noach produceert drie soorten geluid die verwijzen naar de materialen waarvan de sculptuur is gemaakt en het water waarin het ligt: een kloppend woodblock, een trillend, metalen cimbaal en klotsend water. Naarmate de waterstand in de Dommel stijgt, intensiveert en verandert de klank die het Oor van Noach produceert.

Chaise Résonnante

A wooden seat invites passers-by to take a break and sit down for a moment. The bench is anchored in a buried case containing a lithophone. This instrument is made of six limestone bars tuned to slightly different pitches around a low F (at micro-intervals of a ninth of a tone). The bars are about 80 cm long, 15 cm wide and 2 cm thick.

Whenever anyone approaches the Chaise Résonnante, they trigger a mechanism that makes the stone bars inside the lithophone start vibrating, which in turn makes the seat itself vibrate.

Pipes with the same natural frequencies as the musical stones act as resonators. They conduct the sound up out of the ground.

Physical contact with the seat means you can feel the sound as well as hear it.

This installation, located close to the road, plays on the sound experience of traffic roaring past.

The low pitches and microtonal fluctuations at various speeds combine constantly with the sound of cars passing.

Een houten bank nodigt de voorbijganger uit om halt te houden en even plaats te nemen. Het fundament van de bank bestaat uit een ingegraven kist waarin zich een lithofoon bevindt. Het instrument bestaat uit zes staven kalksteen die gestemd zijn in lichtjes van elkaar verschillende toonhoogtes rondom Fa2 (micro-intervallen van één negende van een toon). De staven zijn om en bij de 80 cm lang, 15 cm breed en 2 cm dik.

Wie in de nabijheid van Chaise Résonnante komt, zet een mechanisme in werking dat de staven van de lithofoon bespeelt en daarmee ook de stoel laat vibreren. Buizen met dezelfde eigenfrequenties als de klankstenen functioneren als resonatoren.

Zij leiden het geluid naar de bovengrond. Het fysieke contact met de bank maakt het geluid niet alleen hoorbaar, maar ook voelbaar.

De installatie met haar ligging dicht bij de weg, grijpt in op de klankervaring van het voorbijrazende verkeer. De lage tonen en de microtonale zwevingen in verschillende snelheden vermengen zich voortdurend met het geluid van voorbijrijdende wagens.

Composed Nature

Twenty-four birch trees planted specially for the installation are each fitted with a vibrating motor that can be remotely activated.

The vibration makes it possible to control the rustling of the leaves of the trees, generating fields of noise all around the visitor. Apparently passive participants in our everyday environment, trees, help to create a natural or maybe even supernatural experience.

Nine pre-programmed compositions bear the names of different winds, from a soft breeze to a violent whirlwind. They can be activated from a mobile phone.

Lamps that light up at the same time add extra beauty to an evening visit.

Although the leaf canopy is played by humans and technology, nature still has a role to play.

The sound of each composition is greatly influenced by the weather, the seasons and the growth of the trees.

Vierentwintig kunstmatig aangeplante berken zijn elk voorzien van een trilmotor die vanop afstand kan worden geactiveerd. De trilling laat het bladerdek op een controleerbare wijze ritselen en genereert ruisvelden die de bezoeker omgeven.

Met ogenschijnlijk passieve spelers in onze alledaagse omgeving, namelijk bomen, wordt een (boven)natuurlijke ervaring teweeggebracht.

Negen voorgeprogrammeerde composities dragen de namen van soorten winden – gaande van een zacht briesje tot een strakke wervelwind – en kunnen gestart worden met behulp van een mobiele telefoon. Simultaan oplichtende lampen zorgen ‘s avonds voor een mooi lichtspel.

Hoewel het bladerdek bespeeld wordt door mens en technologie, houdt ook de natuur een deel van de touwtjes in handen. Het klankbeeld van de composities wordt namelijk sterk beïnvloed door de weersomstandigheden, de seizoenen en het groeien van de bomen.

Singing Pools

Three ‘singing pools’ are situated in the shallows of the pond in Klankenbos. These shallow pools are supported just below the water surface and shudder and vibrate as visitors approach, causing ripples and wave formations to travel across the surface of the pond.

The function of the Singing Pools is to show how sound moves visually. It deepens the understanding of what sound really is: a series of movements in time, a transmission of energy by a series of vibrations.

The Singing Pools are site specific and have been in development since 2010 when Locke first made a prototype to test her ideas. She had made various kinds of vibrating pools but none that were installed within a large expanse of water. There were all kinds of unknown factors including water pressure and depth, rising water levels and changes in temperature. The first pool was installed and tested over a six month period during which time the designs were revisited and improved.

In een vijver bevinden zich drie ‘zingende baden’, ondiepe vaten waarvan de bodems zich net onder het wateroppervlak bevinden. Zodra bezoekers naderbij komen, beginnen de vaten te vibreren en te schudden waardoor ze rimpelingen en golfpatronen veroorzaken in het water.

De Singing Pools visualiseren de essentie van geluid: een reeks van bewegingen in de tijd, een transmissie van energie via opeenvolgende vibraties.

Singing Pools is een site specific werk, in ontwikkeling sinds 2010. Locke bouwde reeds verschillende types vibrerende baden, maar geen enkele keer in een vijver. Onbekende factoren zoals diepte, wisselende waterstanden en veranderlijke temperaturen maken de situatie erg complex en onvoorspelbaar.

Een eerste bassin werd geïnstalleerd en uitvoerig getest gedurende een periode van zes maanden, waarna nog de nodige wijzigingen werden aangebracht.

The original pools had adjustable legs that could be raised with rising water levels.

The new singing pools float on marine poly foam supports and are adjusted to the right level in the water using steel weights.

Windribbon

Leif Brush created the Windribbon in his back yard in 1975. It is a long brass strip 0.8 mm thick and 1 cm wide, stretched taut between two trees. The original was 60 metres long and attached to two birches. Contact microphones attached with beeswax and an accelerometer amplify the sound of the vibrating ribbon. The replica in Klankenbos – a first version of which was exhibited at Klinkende Stad/Festival van Vlaanderen in Kortrijk in 2012 – Is very close to the original. For example, it includes one of the contact microphones (Shadow) and an accelerometer from the original Windribbon.

As its name suggests, the wind makes the Windribbon vibrate.

The brass ribbon is far more sensitive to the wind than a string or wire, directly and indirectly (through the movement of the trees it is stretched between). The Windribbon also captures acoustic vibrations, and rain and snow influence how the installation sounds.

In zijn achtertuin ontwierp Leif Brush in 1975 de Windribbon, een opgespannen messinglint van 0.8 mm dik en 1 cm breed. Het originele exemplaar was 60 meter lang en was bevestigd tussen twee berken. Enkele met bijenwas aangebrachte contactmicrofoons en een accelerometer versterkten het geluid van het trillende lint. De replica in Klankenbos - die een eerste incarnatie kreeg tijdens Klinkende Stad/Festival van Vlaanderen in Kortrijk in 2012 - is heel getrouw. Zo wordt gebruik gemaakt van één van de contactmicrofoons (Shadow) en van een accelerometer die gebruikt werden bij de oorspronkelijke Windribbon.

In de eerste plaats wordt de Windribbon, zoals zijn naam het zegt, door de wind tot trillen gebracht. Veel meer dan een snaar of draad is het messinglint gevoelig voor wind, rechtstreeks en onrechtstreeks (bijvoorbeeld door de beweging van de bomen waartussen het opgespannen is). Verder vangt de Windribbon akoestische trillingen op en heeft ook neerslag een invloed op het geluid van de installatie.

Moniek Darge’s collection Muziekdozen (Eng. ‘Music Boxes’) tells a poetical, audio-visual story, holds tiny sounds, subtle reflections, humour and a little bit of liberating kitsch. She frequently explores flea markets with the purpose of discovering interesting boxes and elements. During the visual design of Muziekdozen, fascinating sounds slowly fill up her ears. The result consists of unique creations in which listeners can explore an exciting audiovisual universe.

As portable sound installations, the music boxes are the basis of the game Musical Treasure Hunt. It starts with the story of a very special man who lived a long time ago on the Dommelhof domain. The public can find out how the story ends in an interactive game of searching and digging for musical treasures in Klankenbos.

De collectie Muziekdozen in Klankenbos vertelt een poëtisch, audiovisueel verhaal, bezit stille klanken, subtiele reflecties en een vleugje bevrijdende kitsch. Op rommelmarkten kijkt Moniek Darge steeds uit naar interessante dozen en onderdelen. Tijdens de visuele vormgeving ervan vullen haar oren zich vervolgens traag maar zeker met wonderlijke geluiden. Via de stuk voor stuk unieke creaties kunnen toeschouwers rondreizen in een fascinerend en spannend audiovisueel universum.

Als mobiele klankinstallatie vormen de Muziekdozen van Darge het uitgangspunt voor het spel Muzikale Schattentocht in Klankenbos.

Het spel bestaat erin schatten op te graven aan de hand van een verhaal dat zich afspeelt op het domein Dommelhof waar lang geleden een bijzondere man woonde.

FluisterOren

Medical ‘prostheses’ are artificial replacements of natural body parts. The mobile sound installation FluisterOren (Dutch for ‘whispering ears’) enables the capture of sounds that cannot normally be heard by the limited human ear with a series of glass prostheses. FluisterOren offers the public a set of listening aids to test as artificial organs. The underlying question of this sound installation is what exactly the shortcomings of the body are and what is needed to compensate for them. FluisterOren aims to be an organ that can ‘feel’ sound.

Not just the buzz of everyday life, but sounds that are hard to categorize like those on the edge of silence that are only heard by people who actively seek them out. The artwork tries to capture the subtle, pure vibrations in the air as opposed to the everyday sounds of songs, conversations, industrial noise, cars and so on that surround us. In that sense Baudoin Oosterlynck’s works take a step back in order to capture primitive sound and make it heard. The prostheses can be understood as tools to rediscover the sensitivity of original sounds.

Their meaning lies in their ability to discover sounds that are almost inaudible.

Met de term ‘prothesen’ verwijst men in de medische wereld naar de kunstmatige vervanging of correctie van lichaamsdelen. De mobiele klankinstallatie FluisterOren omvat in navolging van dit idee een reeks glazen prothesen. FluisterOren voorziet als het ware in ‘luisteruitrusting’ die het publiek als artificiële organen kan testen.

De dieperliggende vraag die zich bij deze klankinstallatie opdringt is waarin het lichaam precies tekort schiet en welk instrumentarium dan nodig is om dit gebrek te compenseren. FluisterOren tracht de oren daarom te benaderen als een orgaan dat geluid kan voelen. Niet zomaar alledaags geluid, maar wel klanken die moeilijk in een categorie onder te brengen zijn zoals deze die ontstaan vanuit stilte en enkel gehoord kunnen worden door mensen die er bewust naar zoeken. Het kunstwerk wil zo aanzetten tot het speuren naar pure, subtiele vibraties doorheen de lucht in tegenstelling tot de dagelijkse overweldigende klankbeelden van liedjes, conversaties, industrieel geluid, auto’s, … die ons omringen. De voorwerpen van Baudouin Oosterlynck zetten in deze zin misschien wel een stap terug door het primitieve geluid op te vangen en hoorbaar te maken. De prothesen zijn dus te begrijpen als apparaten om de gevoeligheid voor het originele geluid te herontdekken. De betekenis van FluisterOren ligt volledig in het gebruik ervan tijdens het ontdekken van bijna onhoorbare klanken.

Musiscopes

The mobile sound installation Musiscopes is actually a musical instrument, but it invites the public to experience the nature of sound production personally. It is made up of six portable tables.

There is a network of channels, taps and fittings on and inside the tabletops. Using stethoscopes, listeners can sit around the table and discover the sounds and tones being produced by this network and how the sounds move. They can also influence sound production by turning the taps to block the sound or let it through.

Hoewel de mobiele klankinstallatie Musciscopes gebruikt kan worden als een instrument op zich om muziek te maken, nodigt deze vooral het publiek uit om de aard van de productie en voortplanting van geluid te beleven. De installatie bestaat uit zes verplaatsbare kleine tafels waar zowel op als onder het bovenblad een netwerk van kanalen, kraantjes en attributen aanwezig is. Via stethoscopen kunnen luisteraars die rond de tafel plaatsnemen niet alleen horen welke klanken en geluiden via dit netwerk tot stand komen en hoe deze zich verplaatsen, maar de klank van de installatie eveneens manipuleren door kraantjes open en dicht te draaien.

Self-Simulator

The Self-Simulator is a device that enables you to move around while seeing yourself from behind or from the view of a surveillance camera. The sound is heard through sensitive microphones added artificial, exaggerated reverb. On monitors other people can follow what the person in the Self-Simulator sees and hears.

Normally, simulators are made to give us the experience of controlling something that is out of our reach or to practice and learn certain skills before being confronted with the real situation.

The Self-Simulator turns the idea of ‘virtual reality’ upside down; making us able to experience the reality as if it was artificial.

In doing so the Self-Simulator hopefully confronts us with ourselves through alienation and aims to, among other things, make us reorientate and experiment with the simplest of everyday actions - as if learning to control ourselves through a new interface.

De Self-Simulator is een merkwaardig toestel waarmee de gebruiker zichzelf op de rug aankijkt - of vanuit het standpunt van een beveiligingscamera terwijl hij zich vrij beweegt.

Omgevingsgeluiden worden gecapteerd door gevoelige microfoons en vervormd door toevoeging van een overdreven galm.

Simulatoren worden normaal gezien gebruikt om ons het gevoel te geven iets te beheersen wat buiten onze mogelijkheden ligt of om vaardigheden te trainen vooraleer geconfronteerd te worden met de werkelijke situatie. De Self-Simulator zet het idee van ‘virtual reality’ op zijn kop; het laat ons de realiteit ervaren alsof deze onwerkelijk is.

Door deze vervreemding confronteert de Self-Simulator de gebruiker met zichzelf.

Het apparaat zet aan tot heroriëntatie en experimenteren met de meest eenvoudige, alledaagse handelingen. Alsof we onszelf opnieuw moeten leren controleren met behulp van een nieuwe interface.

Curvices

Curvices (2013) is an audiovisual mobile app that accompanies you on a walk through Klankenbos. As you move from place to place, you help to determine the progression of the music and poetry. Where are you? What can you hear? Are those native birds singing in the woods or are they Portuguese birds you hear coming from your mobile phone? Is that the Trans-Siberian Express or just cars driving down the road beside the woods? As you explore the area you will discover sounds and words and travel through the woods, around the world, in as long or short a journey as you wish to make.

For Curvices, Cox & Grusenmeyer take on the role of lighting designers. They’ve taken care of a custom made light show for the sound walk of Rozalie Hirs. What happens when a mobile screen is approached as a theatre stage?

And how much does light intensity and color influence the atmosphere of poetry?

Curvices (2013) is een audiovisuele mobiele applicatie die je begeleidt tijdens een wandeling door Klankenbos.

Door van plaats te veranderen bepaal je mede het verloop van de muziek en de poëzie. Waar ben je? Wat hoor je? Zingen er inheemse vogels in het bos of klinken er vogels uit Portugal via je mobiele telefoon? Hoor je daar een Transsiberië-Express of zijn het maar auto’s op de weg langs het bos? Met het verkennen van het terrein tast je klanken en woorden af, maak je een reis door het bos, om de wereld, in zoveel passen als je wilt.

Voor Curvices kropen Cox & Grusenmeyer in de huid van lichtontwerpers. Zij verzorgden voor de geluidswandeling van Rozalie Hirs een bijpassende lichtshow. Wat gebeurt er als een mobiel scherm behandeld wordt als een podium? En in hoeverre kunnen lichtintensiteit en kleur de sfeer van poëzie bepalen?

Pierre Berthet

Pierre Berthet studied percussion with André Van Belle and Georges-Elie Octors at Brussels Conservatory. He studied improvisation with Garrett List, composition with Frederic Rzewski and music theory with Henri Pousseur. As a bell ringer, Pierre Berthet spent many hours in church bell towers where he learned to appreciate the beauty of environmental sound.

In combination with an interest in diverse musical genres, this allowed Berthet to develop a highly personal technique of bringing objects together in a way that makes them sound self-evident. He has gradually come to specialise in the extension of objects and instruments, turning steel wires and tin cans into central elements of his work.

Pierre Berthet has been greatly inspired by artists, performers and musicians such as Jim Burton, Alvin Lucier, Terry Fox, Paul Panhuysen and Ellen Fullman.

He gained extra experience in Arnold Dreyblatt’s Orchestra of Excited Strings and has collaborated several times with Frédéric Le Junter. Excerpts from his work can be heard on his albums: Two continuum pieces (Sub Rosa) and Un cadre de piano prolongé (Sonoris) and Extended loudspeakers (Sub Rosa).

Pierre Berthet studeerde percussie bij André Van Belle en Georges-Elie Octors aan het Brusselse Conservatorium. Hiernaast volgde hij cursussen improvisatie bij Garrett List, compositie bij Frederic Rzewski en muziektheorie bij Henri Pousseur aan het Conservatorium van Luik. Als klokkenluider bracht hij veel tijd door in kerktorens waardoor hij omgevingsgebonden geluiden bewust leerde waarnemen en de schoonheid ervan leerde kennen. In combinatie met zijn interesse voor uiteenlopende muziekgenres, ontwikkelde Berthet op die manier een hoogstpersoonlijke stijl om objecten samen te brengen waarbij het klinken ervan telkens vanzelfsprekend wordt. Door zich onder invloed van kunstenaars, performers en muzikanten geleidelijk aan toe te leggen op het verlengen van objecten en instrumenten, werden stalen draden en blikken tonnen onmisbare elementen binnen zijn oeuvre. Pierre Berthet liet zich veelvuldig inspireren door o.m. Jim Burton, Alvin Lucier, Terry Fox, Paul Panhuysen en Ellen Fullman.

Hij bouwde extra ervaring op met The Orchestra of Excited Strings van Arnold Dreyblatt en werkte meermaals in duo met Frédéric Le Junter.

Pierre Berthet’s work has much in common with that of his French colleague Pierre Bastien. Where the latter mainly experiments with Meccano and trumpets, Berthet uses wires, tin cans, pipes, air, plastic, vacuum cleaners, water droplets and so on. The diversity of materials he uses and a concern for simplicity are central to his work. He creates sound installations out of nothing, transforming ‘junk’ into highly musical constructions with an uncommon attentiveness and sensitivity to space and the environment in which they are built.

Pierre Berthet’s werk wordt wel eens vergeleken met dat van zijn Franse collega Pierre Bastien. Daar waar deze laatste voornamelijk experimenteert met Meccano-speelgoed en trompetten, experimenteert Berthet veelal met draden, blikken tonnen, buizen, lucht, plastic, stofzuigers, waterdruppels, … Diversiteit in gebruikte materialen en behoud van eenvoud staan steeds centraal. Vanuit het niets bouwt hij aan klankinstallaties die door ogenschijnlijke bricolage uiterst muzikale constructies worden met een buitengewone aandacht en gevoeligheid voor de ruimte of omgeving waarin ze tot stand komen.

Paul Beuk

Paul Beuk trained in metal and electrics and is the founder of the company Beuk Kunst en Konstructie. Believing that ‘everything is possible’, he develops complex technical applications for artistic projects in the Netherlands and abroad. He has worked with Theatergroep Hollandia, Marina Abramovic, Dick Raaijmakers, Theater aan het Spui, Slagwerkgroep Den Haag, Germaine Kruip and Gigi Fabrice among others, and projects to which he has contributed have been exhibited in countries including Finland, Switzerland and America. He is always interested in projects that balance between technical skills, visual art and sound, and enjoys being part of a project from the drawing board to the final creation.

Paul Beuk kreeg een opleiding in metaal en elektrotechniek. Hij richtte het bedrijf Beuk Kunst en Konstructie op. Met de leuze ‘alles kan’ voert hij als realisator in Nederland en ver daarbuiten complexe technische toepassingen voor artistieke projecten uit. Zo werkte hij reeds voor Theatergroep Hollandia, Marina Abramovic, Dick Raaijmakers, Theater aan het Spui, Slagwerkgroep Den Haag, Germaine Kruip, Gigi Fabrice, … en stonden creaties waarbij hij betrokken was in o.a. Peter Bosch & Simone Simons Peter Bosch studied psychology at the Universities of Leiden and Amsterdam and then sonology at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague. Simone Simons studied audio-visual design at the Gerrit Rietveld Art Academy in Amsterdam. Since 1997 they have lived and worked near Valencia in Spain.

Since the early days of their artistic collaboration back in 1985, Bosch and Simons have given performances, concerts and theatre productions. Since 1990, they have been building autonomous ‘music machines’ that balance on the edge of order and chaos. They exhibit these machines worldwide. A fascination with resonances forms the basis of their creations, characterised by a complex system of interacting vibrations. This leads to unstable situations where small changes are disruptive but essential factors in the unpredictable outcome.

Sound and movement are subject to constant change in the duo’s dynamic installations.

The Krachtgever or ‘Invigorator’ integrates aspects of art, science and technology and is their best known sound installation. The work consists of stacks of wooden boxes, joined together horizontally and vertically with metal springs. An oscillating motor attached to each stack makes it move. Sinds 1997 woont en werkt het kunstenaarsduo nabij Valencia in Spanje.

Vanaf het begin van hun samenwerking in 1985, realiseerden Bosch en Simons performances, concerten en theaterproducties. Sinds 1990 bouwen ze autonome ‘muziekmachines’ die op de rand van orde en chaos balanceren en wereldwijd getoond worden. Fascinatie voor resonanties vormt de basis voor hun creaties, gekenmerkt door een complex systeem van trillingen die elkaar beïnvloeden. Dit leidt tot onstabiele situaties waarbij kleine veranderingen verstorende, maar wezenlijke factoren zijn voor een onvoorspelbare uitkomst.

In de dynamische installaties van Bosch en Simons zijn geluid en beweging voortdurend in ontwikkeling.

De Krachtgever, die balanceert op de diffuse grenzen tussen kunst, wetenschap en technologie, is het bekendste werk uit hun oeuvre. Deze klankinstallatie bestaat uit op en naast elkaar gestapelde houten kisten die door spiraalveren met elkaar in verbinding staan. The piece, their first ‘vibration project’, was created in 1993 for the TARt Festival with help from students at the Universiteit Twente. In 1998 Krachtgever was awarded a Golden Nica in the Prix Ars Electronica in Linz.

The works of Bosch and Simons have been presented many times in Europe and beyond. Cantan un Huevo received a prize at the 29th competition for electro-acoustic music and sound art in Bourges, and Aguas Vivas received an honourable mention at VIDA 6.0 in Madrid in 2003. In 2009 a retrospective of their work was held in La Tour Du Pin in France.

Doordat de trilsnelheden van de motoren variabel zijn, worden steeds andere resonanties van de kisten en de verschillende materialen in de kisten opgewekt. Leif Brush was born in Bridgeport, Illinois. After a short career as a radio maker, he went to study art in the late 1960s at the School of the Arts Institute of Chicago.

He tried out various disciplines (painting, sculpture, silkscreen printing etc.) before finally creating a form of his own: ‘audible constructs’. Some of the works he made as a student already contain the elements that would come to play a central role in his later work. For example, one of his projects was a huge wind harp built on the school roof.

Brush became a professor at the University of Minnesota and remained in that role until he retired. He gradually developed his Permanent Forest Terrain Instruments. The wooded garden behind his house was the workshop in which he built Tree Harps, Signal Discs, Whistlers, Windribbon and other constructions, all of them large sound installations that reacted to the wind and rain.

He used various telecommunications media to broadcast the sounds of these installations, from telephone and radio to satellites.

Although he spoke of ‘permanent installations’, it has always been his intention ultimately to remove his works from their natural setting and recycle them. As a result, nothing was left by the end of the twentieth century except extensive documentation.

Leif Brush werd geboren in Bridgeport, Illinois. Na een korte carrière als radiomaker ging hij eind jaren 60 kunst studeren aan de School of the Arts Institute of Chicago. Hij probeerde er verschillende disciplines om uiteindelijk zijn eigen vak te beginnen: ‘audible constructs’. Sommige van de werken die hij als student realiseerde bevatten reeds de elementen die een centrale rol zouden spelen in zijn latere œuvre. Zo bouwde hij onder meer een reusachtige windharp op het dak van de school.

Brush werd professor aan de universiteit van Minnesota, en zou dat blijven tot aan zijn pensioen. Hij ontwikkelde gradueel zijn Permanent Forest Terrain Instruments.

De beboste achtertuin aan zijn woning was het atelier waar hij onder meer Tree Harps, Signal Discs, Whistlers en Windribbon bouwde.

Het waren stuk voor stuk omvangrijke klankinstallaties die reageerden op weer en wind. Om de klanken van deze installaties de wereld in te sturen deed hij beroep op diverse telecommunicatiemedia, gaande van telefoon en radio tot satelliet. Hoewel hij sprak over ‘permanente installaties’, was het altijd zijn bedoeling om de werken uiteindelijk opnieuw uit de natuur te verwijderen en te recycleren. Het resultaat was dat er tegen het einde van de twintigste eeuw niets meer overbleef, buiten uitvoerige documentatie.

Cox & Grusenmeyer

Cox & Grusenmeyer (Ines Cox en Lauren Grusenmeyer) is a graphic design duo based in Antwerp. Their collaboration began during their studies at Sint Lucas Ghent and continued while Cox completed her master at the Werkplaats Typografie in Arnhem and Grusenmeyer at The Sandberg Institute in Amsterdam.

In their practice they work on both commissioned work as self-initiated projects where they investigate the direction of image and language on different levels.

By believing that design is more than printed matter, they engage sound, language, spacial installations, video, websites and costumes in their work as a means to subject the content to a total identity.

Moniek Darge

Cox & Grusenmeyer (Ines Cox en Lauren Grusenmeyer) is een grafisch ontwerpersduo gevestigd te Antwerpen. Hun samenwerking ontstond tijdens hun studies aan Sint Lucas Gent en hield stand terwijl Cox haar master behaalde aan de Werkplaats Typografie in Arnhem en Grusenmeyer aan het Sandberg Instituut in Amsterdam.

Hun praktijk bestaat uit zowel werk in opdracht als zelf-geïnitieerde projecten waarbij de regie van beeld en taal op verschillende manieren onderzocht wordt. Moniek Darge studied music theory and violin at the Conservatory of Bruges, painting at the Ghent Royal Academy of Fine Arts and Art History, philosophy and anthropology at the Ghent University. She is active as a composer, violinist and performer. In addition, she specialises in soundscapes and live-art performances combining visual and musical aspects. Ever since 1970 she has been active on stage with Stichting Logos, first with the Logos Ensemble, then with Logos Duo, and more recently with the <M&M> robot ensemble.

Darge has built light and sound sculptures, installations, musical instruments and has spent many years constructing a series of alternative music boxes with which she also performs.

In 1997 she received the title of Cultural Ambassador of Flanders for the Logos Duo. Darge has published several journalistic and literary essays. Many international magazines have published her articles. Besides her countless concerts, performances all over the world and activities as organiser, Moniek Darge was a lecturer at the Hogeschool Gent where she taught Art History, Audio Art and Non-Western Art Studies at the Fine Arts Department and an introductory course to Ethnomusicology at the Music Department.

Moniek Darge studeerde notenleer en viool aan het Conservatorium van Brugge, schilderkunst aan de Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten van Gent en kunstgeschiedenis, filosofie en moraalwetenschappen aan de Gentse Universiteit.

Ze is hoofdzakelijk actief als componiste, violiste en performer. Hiernaast specialiseerde ze zich als medebeheerder van Stichting Logos in soundscapes en liveart performances. Tevens is ze actief bij Stichting Logos van Godfried-Willem Raes in Gent, onder andere in het Logos Duo. Darge bouwde licht- en klanksculpturen, installaties, muziekinstrumenten en werkt sinds jaren aan alternatieve muziekdoosjes die ze ook in performances gebruikt. In 1997 kreeg zij met het Logos Duo de titel van Cultureel Ambassadeur van Vlaanderen. Darge schrijft regelmatig artikels voor publicaties en organiseert eveneens tentoonstellingen.

Ze doceert het vak etnische muziek, kunstgeschiedenis en projectseminaries over beeldende kunst en muziek aan de Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten en het Koninklijk Conservatorium van Gent. Ook aan buitenlandse universiteiten geeft zij als gastdocente regelmatig voordrachten.

Koen Deprez

Koen Deprez is best known for his eccentric approach to private and public interiors. He trained with Rem Koolhaas (OMA) in Rotterdam and Alessandro Mendini (Studio Alchimia) in Milan and was left with a passion for the landscape and urban public spaces. Deprez lives and works near Brussels and lectures at the Faculty of Architecture at the KU Leuven. Tony Di Napoli

Tony Di Napoli studied sculpture and bookbinding in Liège and Brussels. Di Napoli teaches at the Walloon International Summer Academy, where he leads a workshop in ‘Sculptures and Sounding Stones’.

Since the very beginning, stone has been a constant theme of Tony Di Napoli’s oeuvre. His work is characterised by ‘complementary oppositions’: on the one hand stone as a durable element, on the other vegetation as an ephemeral element. He enjoys experimenting and is particularly fascinated by the creation process.

Di Napoli combines his skills as a sculptor with his interest in music. He has designed and produced a series of stone instruments which are also used during concerts and other productions.

In 2002 he was awarded a grant to study the history of the use of lithophones in Vietnam.

Di Napoli has held exhibitions of his visual and audio art in Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Italy and France.

He has also given concerts in many European countries and in Vietnam, whether solo or in various collaborations with other musicians and composers.

Since 2011, Di Napoli has been a member of the Ensemble Orchestral de la Freta, a company in which professional musicians make music alongside people with a disability.

Di Napoli is professor aan de Académie Internationale d’Eté de Wallonie, waar hij doceert in het atelier ‘Sculptures et pierres sonores’.

Sinds het prille begin vormt steen de rode draad doorheen de activiteiten en het oeuvre van Tony Di Napoli. Zijn werk wordt vaak gekenmerkt door ‘complementaire opposities’: enerzijds steen als duurzaam element, anderzijds het plantaardige als efemeer element. Hij experimenteert graag en is vooral geboeid door het proces van de creatie.

Di Napoli combineert zijn vaardigheden als beeldhouwer met een grote interesse voor muziek. Hij ontwikkelde een reeks stenen instrumenten die ook gebruikt worden tijdens concerten en andere voorstellingen. In 2002 ontving hij een beurs om in Vietnam onderzoek te doen naar de geschiedenis van het gebruik van lithofonen.

Di Napoli exposeerde zijn beeldende en geluidskunstwerken reeds in België, Nederland, Luxemburg, Italië en Frankrijk. Verder concerteerde hij in heel wat Europese landen en in Vietnam, solo of in diverse samenwerkingen met andere muzikanten en componisten.

Sinds 2011 maakt Di Napoli deel uit van het Ensemble Orchestral de la Freta, een gezelschap waarin professionele muzikanten samen musiceren met muzikanten met een handicap.

Bernward Frank

Bernward Frank plays an important role in the field of kinetic art.

He is the founder of Kineticus, an association of more than 120 kinetic artists exchanging ideas and knowledge within their field.

Frank grew up in a scientific and inventive family: his father was a chemical researcher and his mother was a pioneer of complex weaving techniques. He started out working in the restoration of churches but soon made a name for himself as an artist.

Movement has always fascinated him. His career in kinetic art career began when a friend asked him to make a weathercock like the ones on church steeples. He created a construction with wings that unfurled when the wind blew.

This experiment is now far behind him. Nowadays Frank concentrates exclusively on the creation of fundamental kinetic art. His starting point is always nature.

Bernward Frank vervult een belangrijke rol in de positionering van de kinetische kunst. Hij is oprichter van Kineticus, een vereniging van meer dan 120 kinetische kunstenaars die ideeën uitwisselen binnen hun werkgebied.

Frank groeide op in een wetenschappelijk en inventief gezin: zijn vader was chemisch onderzoeker en zijn moeder een toonaangevende weefster die complexe technieken beheerste en bedacht. Aanvankelijk werkte hij een aantal jaren als restaurateur van kerken en vervolgens vestigde hij zich als kunstenaar. Van in het begin werd hij gefascineerd door beweging. Zijn kinetische kunstcarrière begon toen een vriend vroeg of hij een weerhaan wilde maken zoals men die op kerktorens ziet. De constructie werd er eentje met vleugels die konden uitslaan van zodra het waait. Dit experiment maakt intussen deel uit van het verre verleden. Momenteel concentreert Frank zich alleen nog op het creëren van fundamentele kinetische kunstwerken. In dit verband vertrekt hij telkens vanuit de natuur.

Joris Hekkenberg

Joris Hekkenberg is the founder of Hekkenbergarchitects, a firm that specialises in projects that consciously embrace the borders between architecture, visual arts and other creative disciplines.

He studied architecture at the Technical University in Delft and gained experience at WEST 8 and Stichting BONAS. Up to now, Hekkenbergarchitects has created various private homes, the mobile art and exhibition pavilion MOBEX, contributed to the art event Proto Park II and has taken part in the art and architecture event Bubbel, among other projects. Hekkenberg has been a guest lecturer at the School for Industrial Design in Eindhoven and a ‘visiting critic’ at the Architecture Academy in Tilburg. In collaboration with Programmacommissie Snijpunt, he coordinates tours to recently created architecture projects. He is currently a guest lecturer at the Architecture Department of the TU Delft.

Joris Hekkenberg richtte in 2002 Hekkenbergarchitects op, een bureau dat werkt aan projecten die de raakvlakken tussen architectuur, beeldende kunst en andere creatieve disciplines doelbewust omklemmen.

Hij studeerde architectuur aan de TU-Delft en deed onder meer werkervaring op bij WEST 8 en Stichting BONAS. Hekkenbergarchitects realiseerde inmiddels diverse particuliere woningbouwprojecten, het mobiele kunst- en expositiepaviljoen MOBEX, werkte o.a. mee aan de kunstmanifestatie Proto Park II en de kunsten architectuurhappening Bubbel. Naast dit alles was Hekkenberg gastdocent aan de Design Academy in Eindhoven en ‘visiting critic’ aan de Academie voor Bouwkunst te Tilburg. In samenwerking met de Programmacommissie van Snijpunt organiseert hij excursies naar recent gerealiseerde architectuurprojecten. Momenteel geeft hij als gastdocent les aan de faculteit Bouwkunst van de TU-Delft.

David Helbich

David Helbich is a composer, musician, conceptual artist and performance artist. Helbich creates highly varied and experimental works on stage, on paper, online and in open spaces.

His work varies from interactive, representational work to more conceptual pieces and actions.

A recurrent interest is an understanding of the audience as active individuals and the search for an opening of experiences in an artistically restricted space.

Helbich studied composition and philosophy in Amsterdam and Freiburg. Since 2002, he has been living and working in Brussels. He lectures in music analysis at the dance school P.A.R.T.S. He combines choreography and music as well in his sound walks, audio guides and field and city choreographies.

As a street photographer, Helbich’s publications include Belgian solutions (published by MER. Paper Kunsthalle, Ghent), a series of photos – online and in book format – in which he depicts absurd Belgian solutions and surreal nonchalance.

In 2012/13 Helbich received a development subsidy from the VGC for his work and research around the relationship between public and performative spaces.

Rozalie Hirs

Rozalie Hirs is a contemporary composer and poet. Her poetry and music are both lyric and experimental. Imagination and the adventure of the listening and reading experience are central to her work. Her music includes vocal, orchestral and electronic pieces. She creates both traditional poetry books and digital poetry: interactive poems for which she works with visual artists and graphic designers. For example, she worked with Cox & Grusenmeyer to make her zichtboek van gestamelde werken (‘lookbook for stammered works’) in which six characters based on six poems in the collection gestamelde werken (Amsterdam: Querido, 2012) come to life on six social networks.

Her music, much of which has been composed on commission with support from the Fonds Podiumkunsten, has been performed by ensembles including the Amsterdam Sinfonietta, Asko|Schönberg, Bozzini Quartet, Radio Filharmonisch Orkest and Slagwerk Den Haag; she regularly performs her compositions for speaking voice and electronic sound herself, mainly on international stages. Robert Lambermont

Robert Lambermont is both a visual artist and a pianist. He studied at the Academy of Art in Maastricht and the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam.

Lambermont’s creative process is organic and intuitive. He collects shapes and movements that appeal to him in buildings and landscapes or in less material phenomena such as conversations or the music of Simeon ten Holt.

With poetic intuition, he selects impressions to translate into drawings and three-dimensional objects.

As a pianist, Robert Lambermont specialises in the music of Simeon ten Holt. Along with the members of the Rondane Kwartet, he regularly gives concerts of this composer’s music, sometimes in conjunction with exhibitions of his visual work. Lambermont was a friend of Simeon ten Holt for fifteen years before his death in 2012. In turn, Ten Holt considered Robert Lambermont one of the warmest supporters of his music.

Robert Lambermont’s visual work has been included in several collections in the Netherlands and abroad, including the Rijkscollectie, Museum het Domein, the Schunck and the Bonnefantenmuseum. Over the years he has received various grants from the Mondriaan Fonds (the former Fonds BKVB) for his work in music and the visual arts.

Hij verzamelt vormen en bewegingen die hem opvallen in onder meer gebouwen en landschappen, maar ook in minder materiële zaken zoals een gesprek of de muziek van Simeon ten Holt. Op grond van poëtische overwegingen maakt hij een selectie uit alle indrukken en vertaalt deze naar tekeningen en ruimtelijke objecten.

Als pianist specialiseert Robert Lambermont zich in de muziek van Simeon ten Holt. Samen met de leden van het Rondane Kwartet voert hij regelmatig concerten uit van deze componist, al dan niet in combinatie met tentoonstellingen van zijn beelden. Lambermont onderhield vijftien jaar lang een vriendschappelijke band met ten Holt, die in 2012 overleed.

Het beeldend werk van Robert Lambermont is in verschillende collecties opgenomen in binnen- en buitenland waaronder de Rijkscollectie, Museum het Domein, het Schunck en het Bonnefantenmuseum. In de loop der jaren ontving hij verschillende stipendia van het Mondriaan Fonds (voorheen Fonds BKVB) voor zijn activiteiten op het gebied van beeldende kunst en muziek.

Caroline Locke

Caroline Locke (United Kingdom) is internationally renowned for her sound sculptures and innovative work combining new and old technologies. The early roots of Locke’s work lie in performance and live art, dance, large-scale sets and new media. Locke started to work with mechanical elements and also grew increasingly interested in water, rhythm and flow systems.

Locke makes works that are often sited in public spaces as well as in galleries and performance venues. She received an award for excellence in research for a remarkable live performance where musician’s instruments were connected to water tanks so that the sound waves were visible on the water surface.

Locke also installed permanent sculptures like The Maastricht Sound Fountains within the New International School of Governance at the Maastricht University. For this site specific work, the artist recorded student voices and sounds from the environment around the building. These sounds were processed and combined within synthesized tracks, which are amplified through the surface of the water to create wave forms and fountains.

In 2011 Sound Fountains were exhibited for the first time at Nottingham Contemporary, bringing together research from the last 10

Caroline Locke wordt internationaal erkend voor haar klanksculpturen en innovatieve kunst waarin ze nieuwe en oude technologieën samenbrengt. De wortels van haar werk liggen in performances en live art, dans, grote installaties en nieuwe media.

Locke maakt vaak werken voor de openbare ruimte, maar evengoed voor galerijen en theaters. Ze ontving een erkenning voor haar opmerkelijke live performance waarbij de instrumenten van muzikanten verbonden werden aan watertanks. De geproduceerde geluidsgolven werden zichtbaar, het publiek kon het concert zien aan het wateroppervlak.

Locke installeerde ook permanente sculpturen, zoals The Maastricht Sound Fountains in de New International School of Governance aan de Universiteit van Maastricht.

Voor dit site specific werk nam de artieste stemmen van studenten en andere geluiden rondom de campus op. Deze geluiden werden gebruikt in soundscapes die versterkt worden aan het wateroppervlak, in de vorm van golfstructuren en fonteintjes.

In 2011 resulteerde 10 jaar onderzoek in een expositie van Sound Fountains in de kunstgalerij Nothingham Contemporary. Eric-Jan Pleijster, Cees van der Veeken and Peter Veenstra (The Netherlands) graduated from Wageningen University as landscape architects. In 2006 they collectively started the LOLA Landscape Architects bureau in Rotterdam, which strives to create progressive landscape architecture.

With spot-on ideas and actions based on a combination of research and design, LOLA (LOst LAndscapes) tries to bring new life to forgotten, worn-out and changing landscapes. In doing so, LOLA has an optimistic and conceptual approach, as well as a fascination for new spatial phenomena.

LOLA works for governments, provinces, municipalities and project developers. The office has won multiple design competitions and awards, amongst them Europan Portugal, the EO Wijers competition and the Delta Water Award.

LOLA Landscape Architects ontwerpt en onderzoekt landschappen die vergeten, vervallen of in verandering zijn. Met doordachte ideeën en doelgerichte ingrepen wil LOLA (LOst LAndscapes) die landschappen optimaliseren tot rijke, levendige en fraaie plekken. Een continue wisselwerking tussen onderzoek en ontwerp is kenmerkend voor het bureau, net als de optimistische en conceptuele benadering van projecten en de fascinatie voor nieuwe ruimtelijke fenomenen.

De opdrachtgevers van LOLA zijn voornamelijk de publieke sector, maatschappelijke organisaties en projectontwikkelaars.

LOLA heeft meerdere prijzen gewonnen, waaronder de Europan Portugal, de Delta Water Award en de EO Wijersprijsvraag.

Baudouin Oosterlynck

Baudouin Oosterlynck has been working with the phenomena of hearing and listening for more than 30 years. With almost naïve wonder, he constantly studies various aspects of acoustics, taking every opportunity to find out how sound reaches us or how we can influence that process. Silence intrigues him as well. He has walked and cycled more than 10 000 kilometres over many years in search of variations of silence and authentic silence itself.

Since 1975, Oosterlynck has developed as an autodidact sound artist. To date he has designed 180 works including some 60 installations and 50 ‘listening instruments’ that emphasise the relationship between silence, noise and sound. His work is regularly shown in solo and group exhibitions in Belgium, Europe and the rest of the world. His regular performances exploit the architectonic aspects of a space to the full.

The prepared improvisations he made between 1975 and 1978 have been digitalised and released on CD by Metaphon.

Baudouin Oosterlynck is al meer dan dertig jaar bezig met het zoeken naar de essentie van luisteren en horen. Vanuit een bijna naïeve verwondering bestudeert hij voortdurend diverse facetten van akoestiek. Geen mogelijkheid blijft daarbij onbenut om te achterhalen hoe geluid tot ons komt of hoe we dat proces kunnen beïnvloeden.

Ook de stilte intrigeert hem, want voor het vinden van variaties in stilte en echte stilte legde hij te voet en per fiets gedurende vele jaren meer dan 10 000 kilometer af.

Sinds 1975 ontwikkelde Oosterlynck zich als autodidact tot klankkunstenaar. Hij ontwierp tot nu toe ongeveer 180 ‘opera’ waaronder om en bij de 60 muziekinstallaties en 50 ‘hoorinstrumenten’ die het accent leggen op de relatie tussen stilte, klank en geluid. Zijn werk wordt vaak getoond tijdens zowel solo- als groepstentoonstellingen in België, maar ook op andere plaatsen in Europa en daarbuiten. Verder geeft hij regelmatig performances waarin hij architectonische aspecten van ruimtes ten volle benut. De muziek die hij creëerde tussen 1975 en 1978 in de vorm van geprepareerde improvisaties, werd gedigitaliseerd en uitgebracht door Metaphon.

Paul Panhuysen

Paul Panhuysen studied at the Jan van Eyck Academy in Maastricht and the University of Utrecht. After his studies he was director of the art school Vredeman de Vries in Leeuwarden. In 1966 he became member of the educational staff of the Municipal Museum in The Hague and he worked for the educational staff and public relations of Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven.

In the mid-sixties he started to work on independent forums of interaction between art and society, as with ‘Bende van de Blauwe Hand’ (Leeuwarden, 1964–1967) and the Free Community of the Global City of Peace and Pleasure (1967-1968). In 1968 he founded het Maciunas Ensemble. From this period on until 1984 he also worked on the development of urban environments and as a consulting artist in town planning teams in various Dutch cities.

From 1980 until 2001, Panhuysen was director of Het Apollohuis in Eindhoven.

Paul Panhuysen developed an extensive series of long string installations and since 1990 he worked on interactive projects with birds and other animals.

Through both his work as an artist and his work as a curator, he has been influential to the introduction of new media and sound in art and contributed to a large

Composer, performer and sound artist Horst Rickels has been a saxophonist and pianist with various ensembles since 1961. After training as piano maker and technician at Grotrian-Steinweg in Brunswick and Bechstein in Berlin, he studied music pedagogy and flute at the Music Academy in Kassel. Between 1972 and 1974 he took courses in electronic music with Dick Raaijmakers at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague. Later on, he also studied music theory with Jan van Dijk at Brabant Conservatory in Tilburg.

Rickels has led workshops in jazz and improvised music and played with the free funk band Der Junge Hund, the ensemble De Vier Winden and the Maciunas Ensemble. He has taught at the Design Academy in Eindhoven since 1985 and has been associated with the Interfaculty Department of Art Studies at the Royal Conservatory and Royal Academy in The Hague since 1991. As an artist in residence during the academic year 2007-2008 at the Netherlands Film and Television Academy (NFTA) in Amsterdam, he researched the dialectics of moving images and sound. He was also a guest professor in the ‘Radio’ department of the RITS in Brussels for several years.

Staalplaat Soundsystem

Since the late 1970s, Rickels has been making installations that are mainly based on pneumatically produced sounds. His compositions include visual, architectonic and acoustic elements of the places and spaces he chooses.

A special interest in ‘unstable situations’ in sound processes and performance practice is always central to his work. Since 1983, this artistic premise has led to various concepts for musical instruments and installations, new tunings, compositions, special playing techniques, unusual positioning of the audience and so on. Rickels does not only present his work in concert halls and galleries, but also at industrial sites and in castles in Europe and the United States (including the Donaueschinger Musiktage, Warschauer Herbst, Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, New Music America etc.). He has also been composing film music since 2002, including music for Untertage and 4 Elements by Jiska Rickels.

Sinds de late jaren zeventig maakt Rickels installaties die voornamelijk gebaseerd zijn op pneumatisch voortgebrachte klanken. Zijn composities omvatten zowel visuele, architecturale als akoestische eigenschappen van de plaatsen en ruimtes die hij uitkiest. Geert-Jan Hobijn is a Dutch sound artist, graphic designer and the founder of Staalplaat Soundsystem. Since 2000, Hobijn and Staalplaat Soundsystem have designed and created sound installations of gigantic proportions, transforming simple household appliances and other cast-off goods into vast mechanical orchestras. Making use of hundreds of office ventilators, dozens of floor polishers and row after row of washing machines, Hobijn unlocks the beautiful music hidden within mundane, everyday objects. At the heart of all Staalplaat’s works is a low-tech philosophy: make the complex machinery of modern life appear simple, thus unmasking technology’s inner world. Staalplaat Soundsystem has shown works at several international festivals, museums, galleries and events.

Besides its artistic activities, Staalplaat Soundsystem also organizes instrument-building workshops for children. The aim is to stimulate and explain the creative process and to teach children to find creative and inspired solutions to problems.

Geert-Jan Hobijn (Nederland) is geluidskunstenaar, grafisch ontwerper en stichter van Staalplaat Soundsystem. Sinds 2000 creëren Hobijn en Staalplaat Soundsystem gigantische klankinstallaties, waarbij eenvoudige huishoudtoestellen en andere voorwerpen worden omgetoverd tot grote, mechanische orkesten.

Gebruikmakend van honderden kantoorventilatoren, tientallen boenmachines of rijen wasmachines onthult Hobijn de prachtige klanken die verborgen zitten in doodgewone, alledaagse objecten.

In het oeuvre van Staalplaat staat dezelfde filosofie steeds centraal: Staalplaat laat de complexe machinerie van het moderne leven eenvoudig lijken, het ontmaskert de geheimen van de technologie.

Erwin Stache

Erwin Stache studied physics and mathematics in Leipzig, taking piano and organ lessons at the same time. He built his first electronic instrument, a synthesizer, in 1975. Since 1985, he has worked as a freelance musician, instrument builder, inventor, sound installation designer and composer.

He has been a member of various jazz and blues bands and founded his own music group for experimental music. He has also worked regularly with theatre and dance companies, musicians and poets in Germany, Europe and beyond.

Designing installations and performances for particular places or situations is central to Stache’s work. His fascination with sound, light, movement and space is reflected in his creations which are always a mixture of acoustics, music, physics, theatre, electronics and much more. Time and again, he combines everyday objects and activities that appear to have nothing in common to create surrealist, absurd sound installations and instruments which nonetheless retain traces of the familiar. Trivial or throwaway materials such as air pumps, telephones, irons, radars and keyboards are vital, and are transformed by simple means into components that make peculiar noises. He currently lives in Berlin, Germany. In 2013-2014, Steen-Andersen was guest professor at the Norwegian Academy of Music in Oslo.

Hans van Koolwijk

Hans van Koolwijk is fascinated by sound. He studied visual arts at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam and the Koninklijke Academie voor Beeldende Kunsten in The Hague, and found a place from himself from 1987 onwards in the space between visual art and music. The Bambuso Sonoro is central to his work: a simple musical instrument in which sound is intrinsically linked to sight. This work emerged from the need to allow a soloist to play more than one flute at once. Van Koolwijk explains: “My subject is sound art: I look at sound as material. I work with sound like sculptors work with stone or clay.

As a visual artist, I have always needed to give visual form to unusual sounds: it is as if you need to be able to see the sound.”

Van Koolwijk’s fascination with flutes arose during his childhood, after hearing an enchanting Indian flute raga. That was also around the time that he learned to play the church organ. When he tried pulling open all the stops, he was amazed by the static mass of sound that emerged. This kind of phenomenon would continue to fascinate him all his life.

As a sound artist, Van Koolwijk is a designer and builder of sound sculptures and sound installations as well as a composer and perfomer. He gives concerts in museums and presents exhibi-

Hans van Koolwijk is gefascineerd door klank. Hij doorliep de Rijksakademie en de Koninklijke Academie voor Beeldende Kunsten en installeerde zich vanaf 1987 in de ruimte tussen beeldende kunst en muziek. Binnen zijn oeuvre staat de Bambuso Sonoro centraal, een ongepolijst muziekinstrument waarin het visuele innig is verbonden met het auditieve.

Dit werk is gerealiseerd vanuit de behoefte om een solist meerdere fluiten tegelijk te laten bespelen. Van Koolwijk: “Mijn vak is geluidkunst, ik beschouw klank als materie. Ik werk met klank zoals beeldhouwers werken met steen of klei. Als beeldend kunstenaar heb ik altijd de behoefte gehad om speciale geluiden vorm te geven in een beeld; je moet als het ware de klank kunnen zien.”

De fascinatie voor fluiten ontstond rond het moment dat Van Koolwijk als kind een betoverende Indiase fluitraga hoorde. In die tijd leerde hij ook het kerkorgel bespelen.

Wanneer hij alle registers van het orgel opentrok stond hij perplex van de statische klankmassa die ontstond. Dit soort fenomenen zou hem blijven fascineren.

Als geluidkunstenaar is Van Koolwijk zowel ontwerper-bouwer van klanksculpturen en klankinstallaties als componist-performer. Hij geeft concerten in musea en houdt exposities in concertzalen, wat tot projecten leidt met uiteenlopende kunstenaars, componisten en muzikanten in verschillende bezettingen.

Some of Van Koolwijk’s work is site specific, whereas other works can be exhibited in all kinds of different places. For the last twenty-five years, he has been creating and constantly adding to an extensive palette of sound machines, some very simple and others very complex.

Eric Van Osselaer

Eric Van Osselaer studied visual art and explored several media before devoting himself to the creation of sound installations.

His first works were produced in the nineteen nineties in Dublin in collaboration with Stéphanie Casey. He has since developed a variety of projects, including several sound installations powered by the wind.

As a member of the Shrapnelbinde collective, Van Osselaer collaborates in theatre and street theatre performances. In the construction of his installations, he combines different techniques and procedures and attaches great importance to audience participation. His most recent series of sound pieces is called ‘Tabloscopes’. These are installations consisting of a network of pipes whose sounds are shaped by the audience in a game where one person’s actions influence the others. The first piece in this series is the sound installation Musiscopes. Van Osselaer is also the driving force behind the Orgabits project that uses instruments made of fruit and vegetables. He also develops projects with François Cys.

Terminologie

Sine Wave

Sound is an audible variation of pressure in a medium such as air or water. In the case of aerial reproduction, sound waves move by air pressure vibrations in which compression and expansion alternate as to a balanced state (baseline). In its most elementary form, sound can be represented as a simple sine wave. A sine wave that is repeated in a constant, regular movement has a frequency (see p. 180). Only sound waves with a maintained, harmonic movement produce pitch; chaotic, non-harmonic vibrations create noise.

Tip: Experience sine waves in Oorsprong The defining feature of all wind instruments is a tube in which a ‘column’ of air is set to vibrate, as we find in the Oorsprong installation. The length of the tube determines the pitch of the sound. The air column starts to resonate by blowing the tube. The places in the tube with the smallest width are called ‘nodes’, and those with the largest width are called ‘antinodes’. When moving back and forth inside Oorsprong, you can clearly hear and even feel this phenomenon at work.

Sinusgolf

Geluid is een hoorbare drukschommeling in een medium als lucht of water. In de lucht plant een geluidsgolf zich voort als een luchtdrukschommeling waarbij compressie en expansie elkaar afwisselen ten opzichte van het evenwichtsniveau (nullijn). In zijn meest eenvoudige gedaante kan een geluidsgolf worden voorgesteld als een enkelvoudige sinusgolf. Een sinusgolf die zich herhaalt in een constante, regelmatige beweging, bezit een frequentie (zie p.

180). Alleen geluidsgolven met een aangehouden, harmonische beweging produceren toonhoogte; chaotische of niet-harmonische trillingen creëren geruis.

Tip: Ervaar geluidsgolven in Oorsprong Elk blaasinstrument heeft een buis waarin een ‘kolom’ lucht tot trilling gebracht wordt, zoals in Oorsprong. De lengte van de buis bepaalt de toonhoogte van het geluid. De luchtkolom vibreert door de buis aan te blazen. De plaatsen in de buis met een maximale uitwijking zijn ‘buiken’ en de plaatsen in de buis met een minimale uitwijking zijn ‘knopen’.

Op een buik hoor je meer, op een knoop minder of niets. Door heen en weer te wandelen in de Oorsprong kan je dit prima ervaren.

Frequency

The frequency indicates the number of vibrations per second: the higher the frequency - i.e. the shorter the wave length - the higher the pitch heard. If one vibration lasts exactly one second, we say the pitch has a frequency of 1 hertz. The vibration frequencies that humans can hear are between 20 and 20 000 hertz.

In everyday acoustic conditions, e.g. when someone plays a string instrument, sound is usually made up of a fundamental tone and a series of overtones that are often integer multiples of that fundamental frequency. The pitch that we actually perceive corresponds to the sounding (or virtual!) fundamental. The characteristic colour or ‘timbre’ of a tone depends on how loud its overtones are resonating.

Frequentie

De frequentie van een geluidsgolf duidt op het aantal trillingen per seconde. Hoe hoger de frequentie (en hoe korter de golflengte), hoe hoger de waargenomen toonhoogte. Amplitude

A sound wave has a crest and a trough. The difference between the middle (baseline) of the wave and the crest is called the amplitude. Amplitude is related to loudness: the higher the amplitude, the louder the sound.

Every object can start to vibrate by hitting it. The frequency at which an object spontaneously vibrates is called natural frequency. By sounding its natural frequency at distance, an object can vibrate automatically without even touching it. We call this phenomena resonance.

When an object has low internal absorption, such as an object made of metal or glass, its resonance is stronger and longer than one with high internal absorption, such as wood or stone.

When the exact inner frequency is maintained persistently and loudly, the object will vibrate increasingly. Sooner or later the growing vibrations will cause it to break. This is why it is possible, for example, to break a glass with sound.

Op die manier komt het voor dat glas breekt door middel van geluidstrillingen.

Beating

When two pitches with only a very small difference in frequency are sounded simultaneously, a ‘fluttering’ beat effect can occur.

This is a psychoacoustic effect in which the difference between frequencies is no longer perceived as pitch difference, but as rhythmic fluctuating sound volume. If the difference between these frequencies gets bigger, the human ear is no longer able to hear these rhythmical fluctuations but perceives instead a pitch with a raw, dissonant timbre. On the other hand, when the difference continues to increase, this raw timbre disappears and two separate pitches are perceived.

Tip: Experience beating in Chaise Résonnante You can easily discover what beating sounds like with Chaise Résonnante, an installation in which stone bars produce slightly different natural frequencies. Slow beatings indicate that two frequencies are very close to each other.

Zweving

Als twee toonhoogtes met slechts een heel klein verschil in frequentie samenklinken, verkrijgt men zwevingen.

Tip: Ervaar zwevingen bij Chaise Résonnante Het effect van zwevingen kan men ervaren bij Chaise Résonnante, een installatie waarbij stenen staven met een lichtjes verschillende eigenfrequentie aan het trillen gebracht worden. Trage zwevingen duiden op heel dicht bij elkaar liggende frequenties.

Listening points

The ear is an amazingly sensitive organ. In many ways it is our best developed sense and tells us far more about our environment than we might suspect. Our ears are bombarded with environmental sounds all day long. During our daily activities, we automatically shut out the excess of background noises, especially when it gets too loud.

A listening trail in Klankenbos invites the visitor to become conscious of ‘everyday sounds’, environmental noises that normally are only perceived in a functional way. Different ‘listening points’ help you listen from a different perspective each time. Little exercises in listening allow you to explore the different characteristics of sound and the vast abilities of our ears.

The Klankatlas is a joint project by Musica, Impulse Centre for Music, and Intro in Situ, with the support of the provinces of Belgian and Dutch Limburg in the context of an interregional cooperation.

Klankenbos

Klankenbos, the ‘Sound Forest’, hosts a permanent collection of sound installations in the open air. The works stimulate the ear and caress the eye. The challenge when visiting Klankenbos is to be aware of sound and silence: a particular experience for people of all ages. The large scale and permanent accessibility of Klankenbos make the collection unique in Europe.

Besides the permanent, openair installations, the collection also houses several mobile works.

These are interactive installations that encourage visitors to participate and experiment.

Klankenbos

Klankenbos herbergt een permanente collectie klankinstallaties in openlucht. De kunstwerken zijn een prikkeling voor het oor en een streling voor het oog.

Tijdens een bezoek aan Klankenbos word je uitgedaagd om klank en stilte op een bewuste manier te beleven, een bijzondere ervaring voor mensen van alle leeftijden.

De omvang en de permanente toegankelijkheid van Klankenbos maken de collectie uniek in Europa.

Naast de vaste installaties in openlucht, maken ook een aantal mobiele installaties deel uit van de collectie. Het zijn interactieve installaties die aanzetten tot participatie en experiment.

Iedereen kan Klankenbos op eigen houtje verkennen, gratis en op elk moment van de dag. Een plattegrond met toelichting bij de installaties kan je meenemen aan één van de ingangen van het bos.

Wil je alle geheimen van Klankenbos leren kennen, dan is een rondleiding een aanrader. De gids laat je de collectie op een optimale manier ervaren: je krijgt inzicht in de artistieke ideeën achter de werken en de technische hoogstandjes die sommige installaties herbergen.
