NEVER GOING HOME So last night we had the pleasure of eating at Murphy’s Irish Pub on the dark side. First when you visit be sure to seek out the owner Steve, he is enjoyable company. The facility is quite nice with a deluxe dining area. Clearly a high energy Rugby watching spot. Since San Miguel Light was on draft I decided on it as a pre appetizer. So jumping right in, I noticed on the board lots of interesting specials. Goulash for 80 baht? Anyway it arrives as a huge portion

great value worth visiting just for a quick fill of goulash! We talked to Steve before ordering for his recommendations. He said he would spilt some items with me, but I had to beat him back over the Hamburger, he really wanted his hamburger. They have an extensive Thai menu as well so one of our guests ordered Pla Kung. I ate one of the prawns, first time for me, very delicious! I mentally noted they had masaman curry so it is on my list for a revisit.

We shared Nachos between us, clearly not bagged up chips. Great thing was you want more pico de gallo? No problem! Moving on as a main dish I settle on Guinness Pie. A rare treat for me, full of meat. I opted for red wine. For our Vegan, spring rolls arrived and he ordered a baked jacket potato. I have never seen one as

big or with as much sour cream ever before. It didn’t get finished even though I tried to help. Cooked perfectly! Now of course I am holding out for deserts, BIG mistake. I am al-

ways proudly noting “I ate 5 deserts”. Well that is because they are those little squares they have at buffets and the like, NOT HERE. Clearly desserts are not intended for just one person but

I didn’t know that. While we are waiting they served us a little chocolate with a mint leaf. It was so cute. Steve explained it was Irish chocolate, and most people didn’t know the Irish grew choco-

late. I think that was BS 555. We ordered brownie cake, carrot cake and a mixed berry crumble. The portions are monstrous. The brownie cake was actually lighter and fluffier than those brick like brownies around town. Very nice but four of us couldn’t finish the portion. It would make a good birthday cake. The carrot cake was a nice change and manageable. The berry crumble with vanilla ice cream did me in and I was done. So had to have a taste of Irish whiskey as post dessert, after all it is an Irish pub. Pete Mountanos, Thailand, +66611308530 or 011 66 611308530 by Nick Athens

THAI FAMILY Over the years I have had many foreign clients with Thai partners, they are usually married and choose to spend their lives together here in Thailand. A common problem that I have seen with couples starting life together is when the foreign partner wants to build a house or develop a land project. Usually when you want to build a house you plan to employ professional companies and tradesmen such as designers, architects, engineers to take care of your project for them. It is usually during this time that the Thai partner will recommend that they

Usually during construction there will be problems regarding building standards or the quality of the materials used, the partner’s family will usually complain that you are wrong and want the impossible when what you want is actually only too much for them to handle. This can be a big problem but actually whatever you want is your choice, you are right and it is your decision. The family usually does not possess the skills to properly manage and construct your project, but the fee that they charge will usually be higher than that of hiring a pro-

will crop up during construction causing delays and deviations from the original plans, some construction can only be done by proper professionals such as swimming pools. Over the years I have inspected a large number or useless pools that have ended up as ponds for stagnant water. COMMENT: Whenever you are abroad it seems to be that you are in the second class of the people in that country. So whenever you plan to start something whether it is a business or construction project you need to hire and deal with professionals;

used in construction. So in the end you will not only have a problem with the family but will also have the problem with your part-

employ someone from her family; actually she is only trying to do the good thing, she is worried about her family and wants to take care of them and at the same time if you plan to pay a lot of money to someone why can’t it be to the family. This is not a good idea as they will not be professional, cannot speak your language; don’t understand your culture, don’t know what you want and they will not have enough experience to do a good job for you.

fessional. Sometimes they may lie or cheat money from you, an example is if a third party is needed to be brought in to perform a service, such as an excavation for a swimming pool or putting in foundations; they will overcharge you on top of the quoted third party price. Sometimes the foreign party trusts the Thai partner’s family and gives money to them, but they don’t give it to the third party and the third party then comes to you asking for payment. There will be many problems that

people who understand your needs, can give you good advice and have the right skills to fulfill your requirements. This will always be better than to use someone that you’re partner trusts but who don’t have the proper experience to serve your needs. A business is run by professionals, it cannot be run by the family, especially when they cannot speak a word of English. You will have to communicate through your partner who usually doesn’t understand all the technical terms

INTERNATIONAL DIVORCE

Jurisdiction Is The Key Where you get divorced can determine the result Each divorce or separation has its own particular circumstances. One common thread, however, is the complexity of financial arrangements. This can be tricky enough when both of you are resident and citizens of the same country. When more than one county or nationality is involved, it can be even more of a minefield – and that’s without even taking children into account. Nevertheless, there are certain principles which apply to most cases, and are worth noting.

Thailand If you intend to divorce in Thailand, there are two options: uncontested or contested divorce. The uncontested option is usually quick and straightforward. No grounds are needed, and it is an administrative procedure conducted at the local registry. However, if one of you isn’t a Thai national you need to ensure the foreign country recognises this form of divorce. Many countries now do, but only in certain cases. This could cause problems in the future if the non-Thai wishes to remarry.

A contested divorce goes through the courts and requires certain grounds provided by Thai law.[1] If neither of you is Thai but you both have the same nationality; you may choose to go through the Thai system. In which case, these grounds may not be applicable, provided the laws that country don’t contradict those of Thailand. The contested procedure is designed to settle disputes on child custody or marital property. It can also be a remedy for couples who have not registered their marriage in Thailand but have been residing or working in Thailand for a

while. Other countries However, you don’t have to get divorced in the country in which you were married or where you were living while you were together. In fact, you can do it in any country in which either of you are now settled or where one of you holds a passport, provided it recognises that you were married in the first place. England and Wales, for example, is known for being the divorce capital of the world, because it’s considered to have a generous approach to sharing a couple’s

assets. The objective is to get a fair result for everyone concerned. Because of their codified laws, some other jurisdictions tend to apply a more formulaic approach. You may have an option of where to get divorced; in which case it’s important you choose somewhere which suits you both best. However, the jurisdiction can be determined by law – some courts recognise themselves according to their own tests (e.g. place of habitual residence). This can lead to more than one country qualifying, in which case international principles, such as first in time, apply. So, if you fail to agree on the place, you could be in a race to apply in your preferred jurisdiction first. In that case, you need to get quick, accurate advice so you can decide which place is best for you; if there is sufficient connection for proceedings to take place there; and if you comply with the procedural requirements (e.g. if you have all of the required documents, notarised and translated marriage certificates). Disclosure of assets The location and treatment of disclosed assets could make a differ-

ence as to your preferred jurisdiction. Some countries or territories require both parties to give full disclosure of all assets, no matter where in the world they are held. That could mean – amongst others – bank accounts, pension assets, property and interests in trusts. Even if the latter does not count as part of your matrimonial assets, it may still have to be disclosed. International network of advisers If you’re getting an international divorce, it’s important to have an international network of advisers to hand, so you can make an informed, timely decision regarding jurisdiction. MBMG Group can advise you on divorce in Thailand and is a member of the invitation-only GGI Geneva Group International Alliance, the largest global multidisciplinary alliance of independent accounting, audit, law and consulting firms. That means we have access to independent advice in 124 countries, to help you through the process. For more information and to speak with our advisor, at info@mbmggroup.com or call +66 2 665 2534.

THE BILLABONG AND SPONSORS COME TO THE RESCUE Everyone was so excited, for the school was about to start building a new extension, for an additional classroom was planned to make life easier for staff and students alike. But the excitement subsided for the money ran out and a half completed building remained. Not an unfamiliar story unfortunately. The education of children is a prime requirement in any country in the world and Thailand is no exception for there

are hundreds, perhaps thousands, of schools throughout Thailand. Most schools in the city centres are well supported by the local

government with new extensions, a roof to cover the playing areas and general support but the staff of small, out of the way schools in small villages must take steps to raise finance to have extensions or improve facilities to benefit the village children. But this is not a simple matter for the children come, generally, from poor families who make their living off the land or supporting local business. Ban Krasang School is a

case in point. Situated just outside Buriram, there facilities have been outgrown by the ever increasing number of children in

16 THE VOICE OF THE PEOPLE OF PATTAYA

attendance and they were in desperate need of an additional classroom. They started to build an extension but ran out of money and ended up with the building having a roof that leaked, no flooring and no walls which is a problem when a strong wind accompanied by heavy rain envelopes the children with a fine spray, with dust and dirt whirling around which is no help when the children are studying. When the

extension is completed other items will be required like desks and chairs - but that is a problem for later. They have about 200

children at the school with ages ranging from 5 to 12 years coming from families who can ill afford extra expense and an urgent appeal came to the Billabong, via Miss Sasicha who originates from Krasang, for help which could not be ignored by Sandy and Capt. Bob, and a charity golf day was quickly organized. The fund has been swelled by the generosity of Pattaya Sports Club, KCL Cleaning, Mike Stennett, Bob St. Aubin, Todd and Nok Gibbens, there was also an auction of 2 golf bags and each golfer made a donation of 300 baht. It is anticipated that an amount in excess of 90,000 baht will be raised for this worthwhile cause. So a big thank you goes to the sponsors and all those that have donated to this event and provided for a successful day.

DOGS 4 DOGS

On November 2nd, the Mad Dogs Motorcycle Club will be hosting a charity fundraiser for Adriano’s dogs home. They have had many previous successful events, including Poker Runs, which have always raised funds to feed and house invalid dogs from the Pattaya area. It seems that all bikers love dogs and are keen to help when necessary. The upcoming event will be at THE CLUBHOUSE in Soi Khopai on Saturday November 2nd starting at

2pm and everyone is invited to buy raffle tickets and make a donation, however big or small. You do not need to be a biker to join in and will be welcomed with open arms by this friendly club. Adriano is always in need of dog and cat food to keep his centre going and this can be a great alternative as a donation. Once again the Pattaya biker community comes together as one to help the needy.

NON-VEG DIET VS VEGETARIAN DIET The vegan population in US has increased from 1% in 2009 to 6% in 2017, which is around 6 times the previous population. And if we see the overall world population, then we’ll find that around 21.8% are vegans. A study from 2010 estimated that there are 1450 million vegetarians of necessity and another 75 million of choice. So what’s the reason behind this sudden change? Why are many people moving towards a purevegetarian diet? The reasons may be health issues, ethics or love for animals. This is related to one of the hotly debated topics of all time:

Should we eat meat or not? Isn’t a vegetarian diet healthier? Arguments Supporting Non-Veg Diet - Meat eating is mainly argued due to its nutritional value. Meat helps in a better physical growth and provides strength to muscles due to the high quality protein present in it. - Our brain is the most power hungry organ of our body and uses more than 20% of our total energy. Meat fulfils this energy demand in a better way than any other food product. - Meat is one of the biggest source

20 THE VOICE OF THE PEOPLE OF PATTAYA

of good quality iron, an essential component of our body that helps in the formation of hemoglobin and myoglobin. - Another important component of our diet which cannot be obtained from plants is Vitamin B12. The deficiency of B12 is very scary. It may lead to pernicious anemia and nerve damage, which can mimic Alzheimer’s and multiple sclerosis. - In this whole world one animal must kill another animal to survive. This is the rule of life. The only difference is that herbivores kill plants, carnivores kill animals and omnivores kill both. So, what’s wrong in humans killing animals for food when they are capable of it? - Also our digestive system is that of an omnivore. The moderate size of our intestine, presence of meat digestive enzymes and canine teeth suggests a non-vegetarian diet we are capable of. Arguments Supporting Pure-Vegetarian Diet

- There are many health benefits of vegetarian food. While meat causes obesity, high cholesterol, different cardiovascular diseases and sometimes even cancer, vegetarian food saves us from all these diseases. Most vegetarian diet is full of antioxidants which reduces aging, risks of heart disease and risk of other diseases like kidney stones, cataract and even diabetes. - A vegetarian diet can fulfil all our nutritional needs. One can obtain good quality protein from plants such as soy or hemp products (or milk if he/she is not an extreme vegan). Soy can also fulfil our needs of Vitamin B12. Thus, a vegetarian diet can give you a healthy life and may increase your lifespan by few years. - Meat eaters say vegans also kill plants. Well, if we see at the minute level, we are actually killing thousands of bacteria every second. Many-a-time we ignorantly kill many ants underneath our feet. So the point is, it doesn’t matter whether we kill or not, the point that matters is the complexity of the organisms we kill. - Majority of world population takes a non-vegetarian diet, there is high

load on animal farming. Around 70% of US grain production is used to feed farm animals. It also requires huge amount of water, more than half the water used in United States. Also raising animals for food is the biggest polluter of water and topsoil. The waste in slaughterhouse also gives rise to

friendly. Conclusion So, we saw the arguments of both the sides and both seem to be logical. There is no doubt about the fact that meat is a very nutritious food and our biological features support an omnivorous diet. But one thing we (non-vegetarians)

many harmful bacteria which flows down to water and soil and then pollutes them. Thus, vegetarian food is also environment-

can do to minimize it. We can reduce our meat consumption, like once or twice a week. We can preferably eat smaller organisms like fish rather than big animals like cow, which has a greater sense of understanding and emotion. Our articles should be used for informational and educational purposes only and are not intended to be taken as medical advice. If you’re concerned, consult a health professional before taking dietary supplements or introducing any major changes to your diet. Source: https://thinknitesh.com

DR.KAMALJIT SINGH HEALTH TIPS:FOODS TO AVOID IF YOU HAVE ANXIETY OR DEPRESSION Energy drinks and alcohol are on the list, but so are fruit juice and soy sauce. See which other foods and drinks you may want to avoid- Dr. Kamaljit Singh.

Fruit Juice: -The fiber in whole fruit fills you up and slows down how your blood takes in energy. Without that fiber, you’re just drinking nutritious sugar-water that can quickly hype you up — and bring you down just as fast. That can leave you hungry and angry — “hangry.” That won’t help anxiety and depression. Eat your fruit whole. When you’re thirsty, drink water. Regular Soda: -There’s no win for you here: It has all of the blood-spiking sugar of fruit juice with none of the nutrition. Sugar-sweetened drinks like soda have a direct link to depression, too. If you crave a pop, try seltzer water with a splash of juice instead. It’ll give you a bubbly fix without too much of the stuff you don’t need. Diet Soda: -No sugar, so no problem, right? Not exactly. You may not have the energy crash that comes with having too much sugar, but diet soda may make you depressed. In fact, it could make you feel more down than its sugary cousin would. Too much of the caffeine that many sodas have can be bad for anxiety, too.

and depression. Check the ingredients or, better yet, make your dressing at home from scratch.

If you do eat fat, make it the “good” kind you get from foods like fish, olive oil, nuts, and avocado. Those can lift your mood.

Ketchup: -It’s mostly tomatoes, right? Well, yes, and sugar, lots of sugar. Four grams per tablespoon, to be exact. And the “light” stuff may have artificial sweeteners that could be linked to anxiety and depression. Try homemade tomato salsa instead. Want a little kick? Add a bit of cayenne pepper.

Soy Sauce: -This one is only for people who are sensitive to gluten. In addition to breads, noodles, and pastries, it’s also in prepackaged foods like soy sauce. If you’re sensitive to gluten, it can cause anxiety or depression. It can also make you feel sluggish and not at your best. Check labels and try to steer clear.

Coffee: -If you’re not used to it, the caffeine in it can make you jittery and nervous. It could also mess up your sleep. Neither helps anxiety or depression. Caffeine withdrawal can make you feel bad, too. If you think it causes you problems, cut caffeine out of your diet slowly. If you’re OK with it, or drink decaf, coffee can actually help make you feel less depressed.

Processed Foods: -If you eat lots of processed meat, fried food, refined cereals, candy, pastries, and high-fat dairy products, you’re more likely to be anxious and depressed. A diet full of whole fiber-rich grains, fruits, vegetables, and fish can help keep you on a more even keel.

Energy Drinks: -They can cause weird heart rhythms, anxiety, and sleep issues. That’s because it’s not always easy to know the sky-high caffeine levels hidden in ingredients like guarana. These beverages often have loads of sugar or artificial sweeteners, too. Drink water if you’re thirsty. Want a sugar hit? Eat a piece of fruit.

Toast: -Wait, toast?! If it’s made from white bread, yes. The highly processed white flour it’s made from quickly turns to blood sugar after you eat it. That can cause energy spikes and crashes that can be bad for anxiety and depression. You can have your toast — and eat it, too. Just use whole-grain bread.

Alcohol: -Even a little can mess up your sleep. Not enough rest can raise anxiety and cause depression. Too many ZZZs can cause even more problems. That said, a drink could calm your nerves and make you more sociable. That can be good for your mental health. The key is dosage: A drink a day for women, and two a day for men, is the limit.

‘Light’ Dressing:-You might know to avoid some pre-packaged dressings and marinades loaded with sugar, often listed as “high-fructose corn syrup.” But what about “light” or “sugar-free” dressings? Many get their sweetness from aspartame, an artificial sweetener linked to anxiety

Frosting: -It’s the sugar, right? Well, yes, but that’s not all. It’s also loaded with around 2 grams of “trans fats” per serving. They’re linked to depression. Sometimes called “partially hydrogenated oils,” they’re also in fried foods, pizza dough, cakes, cookies, and crackers. Check your labels.

ISSUE 619  NOVEMBER 2019

Doughnuts: -We all love them, and little treats now and then can help your mood. But just so you know: Doughnuts have all the wrong kinds of fats, snow-white flour with little fiber to slow absorption, and lots of added sugar. So, if you must, make them a treat, not a routine. November 22, 2019 20 Exercises to Do at Your Desk — Get Fit at Work or Home If you are sitting down and reading right now, you should stop! Okay, well don’t stop reading, but you might want to stand up to finish it. Why? Well, if you are like most people today, chances are you are spending too much time tied to your desk buried in emails. Our modern lives have been engineered so that we can spend most of it sitting down. Unfortunately, sitting is literally killing us. According to the World Health Organization, an estimated 3.2 million deaths can be attributed to lack of physical activity. Our sedentary lifestyles are responsible for increasing our risk of diabetes and heart disease as well as a loss of muscle and bone strength. Perhaps even more alarming is that people who exercise regularly are probably still not getting enough movement in their lives to counteract the deleterious effects of sitting too much. On average, we spend about 9.5 hours a day sitting. Compare

ISSUE 619  NOVEMBER 2019

that to the 7.5 hours of sleep we are getting on average, we are doing a lot of sitting. That’s the reason that hour on the elliptical isn’t going to save you! The impact of all that sitting is an increased rate of obesity. The good news is that with a little more activity throughout the day, we can actually reverse the inevitable weight gain — maybe even lose up to 20 pounds — associated with such a sedentary existence. . Little changes here and there can go a long way in keeping you healthy and happy. Also, We Are Sitting Wrong Let’s be honest here, for all the sitting we do, we aren’t very good at it. We do a lot of slouching and craning our heads forward. Our heads are heavy, and the further forward we have them as opposed to being aligned with our spine, the heavier they become. Diana will share valuable 20 exercises that can be done in your chair at home or at your desk at work to keep you in shape, gain energy and develop more stamina while keeping you healthy and enjoying your day About the speaker: Diana Mountanos has lived most of her entire life with a focus on exercise and living a healthy lifestyle. She was a competitive back stroke swimmer in her teens. Sprint relay running, archery, and competitive swimming were her high school passions. Reach her via email: diana@dianamountanos.com Diana Mountanos 061 130 8550. www.pureyogapattaya.com November 29, 2019 We have Dr. Ian Nicolson back with us speaking on: The Fermentation Process, It’s Importance in our Lives. With a background in the Food Industry for a major multinational, Dr. Nicolson will explain what the fermentation process is, where we can find it and what its benefits are. Dr. Ian is Graduate Chemist researching how plants make drugs. He worked for Unilever for 20 years. Then he was also with Lever Bothers, Port Sunlight on soaps and detergents, Van den Berghs & Jurgens, the Flora & Stork manufacturers. And Mattessons Meats. pected visitor Ross Schiffte took third place with thirty points, he also managed a near pin with two going to Michael Brett. We have seen the first of our seasonal visitors today with Ken Davidson making an appearance for the aftermatch presentation, with many more to follow in the next few weeks.

BUNKER BOYS Monday, October 14th Pattana Sports & Country Club B &C 1st Robby Watts (9) 35 points 2nd Craig Dows (7) 33 points 3rd Jimmy Carr (17) 32 points Near pins Jimmy Carr, Michael Brett, & Craig Dows X 2. As is often the case at Pattana the weather threatened with rain, thunder, and lightning all around. By the closing holes on the C course, it got very close, in fact, rain may have been falling on the A nine but we managed to finish dry. The course was in good condition albeit a bit damp in places but not enough to require the application of the pick, clean, and place rule. With a very generous handicap of nine and the use of a little anchor work on the closing holes, Robby Watts still managed to amass thirty-five points and take first place. Craig Dows took second place two adrift, both Robby and Craig are now returning to Melbourne for a while so we will be able to present a winners list without either of their names, something we haven’t seen in the past month. Jimmy Carr took third with thirty-two and threatens a return to top form by the time the Annual Club Championship rolls around in about a month’s time. Near pins went to Jimmy Carr, Michael Brett, and two to Craig Dows. Numbers are low for this time of year with many of our local residents on overseas jaunts, we expect a big upswing in num-

bers by the end of the month. We may also see an end to some of the late-season monsoon weather we have had lately, great for the courses but not so nice for play. Wednesday, October 16th Bangpra 1st Gerry Cooney (20) 33 points 2nd Michael Brett (15) 33 points 3rd Ross Schiffte (18) 30 points Near pins Ross Schiffte, & Michael Brett X 2 A very pleasant day weatherwise for our game at Bangpra where the monkeys were out in great abundance. Some of the bigger ones proved to be a bit more aggressive and threatening than we have seen before. It’s best to at least have a club in hand when encountering them at close quarters as flashing teeth and aggressive posturing was common, best give them a wide berth if possible. After the round from inside the restaurant area, one of the bigger ones was seen to have scaled the clubhouse and proved to be a concern for the security staff as it was on an open area balcony used by smokers, another example of the dangers of smoking. The course was in fine condition given recent rain and was also quite crowded, yet the pace of play was good and we completed the round in three and a half hours. After a few weeks, away in the countryside, Gerry Cooney returned to the fold today and also the winner’s circle with thirty-three points edging out Michael Brett into second on countback. An unex-

Friday, October 18th Treasure Hill 1st Gerry Cooney(20) 30 points 2nd Michael Brett (15) 28 points 3rd Jimmy Carr (17) 24 points Near pin Michael Brett. What a frustrating day for our last game of the week at Treasure Hill. The weather was hot and humid, the course was difficult as always, and the pace of play was abysmally slow, over five hours to complete. As if that wasn’t enough we somehow managed to get a bunch of caddies who were compulsive gibbers and had to to be told to be quiet when someone was playing a shot a few times,I don’t know which of the above or all affected players the most, maybe all of them as scoring was the lowest we have seen this year. Gerry Cooney who had a good front nine took the honors with thirty points. Michael Brett gave chase on the back nine and got within a stroke only to mess up late in the round and finish second with twenty-eight. Jimmy Carr looked to be coming back into form but today was a major set back with only twenty-four points. Only one near pin was taken by Michael Brett, several hit greens only to roll off by a matter of inches. It only takes one selfish group to ruin the day for everyone as was the case with a group about three holes in front of us. We don’t know if it was a cultural issue or they just couldn’t play, worse still the caddies refused to call the marshall and have them sit down for a couple of holes or just play at a proper pace.

LINKS GOLF SOCIETY Chris Swaps “silly hat” For Green Jacket On Wednesday, October 23rd A group of our regulars are on a golf trip to Vietnam, and a couple of others are on the sick list, but we still had 27 keen players ready to hit the greens at Pattavia Century. The day was fine, very warm and a little tiring with, again, no threat of the afternoon rains. As always, this course was presented in fine condition with nice fairways and, although the greens had been lightly sanded, they still had pace, particularly downhill, and three putts became reluctantly accepted. Maurice is in the Vietnam troupe so kept it simple in the morning by deciding to have one flight with six places. On Monday, Chris Barker wore the green “silly hat” for an indiscretion of golf etiquette, not for a low score. Today he obeyed the rules and posted the top score of 40 points to wear the other green thing. Five days ago, Mike Firkin wore the Green Jacket and just missed out today, but scored a grand 39 points to win a countback, he had 25 points on the back nine, from another in-form player, Rod Weekes. Jim Ferris has bounced back after a lay off and his 37 points beat

last start winner, Wayne Peppernell, on another countback. Garry Hookey rounded out the podium with 36 points. Some very good scoring on a not so easy course. Near Pins: Bill Fulton (4), Rod Weekes (7), Garry Hookey (13), Larry Slattery (17). Winners at Pattavia 1st Place -Chris Barker (14) - 40pts 2nd Place -Mike Firkin (24) - 39 pts c/back 3rd Place -Rod Weekes (15) - 39pts 4th Place –Jim Ferris (23) - 37 pts c/back 5th Place –Wayne Peppernell (17) – 37 pts 6th Place - Garry Hookey (18) – 36 pts Best Front Nine ( non winners) Chris Walsh - 17 pts c/back Best Back Nine (non winners) Gavin Lang - 21 pts. Ian Barclay carried on the tradition of newbies by wearing the “wig” on their first outing with Links. He had the lowest points

score today. His good buddy, Richie McIntosh, is no stranger to the crazy headwear and got to wear the “silly hat” to join Ian and Chris for the photo op. A Note: Your organisers spend a lot of time on the phone booking courses, finding good deals, and trying to keep up to date with golf courses changing prices either up or down without notice. We need to chase them. There are just times, no matter how much we chase, when we find out at the eleventh hour, so please read the disclaimer on the website when checking the program. Pattaya Links Golf Society is a PSC affiliated, friendly group and welcomes golfers of all levels. We play Monday ,Wednesday and Friday.” Links” Bar is towards the Southern end of Soi Buakhow. Check the Big board out front for upcoming games schedule. Sign up at Links Bar or online to join us for a fun day of competition golf.

The Magnificent Seven and that’s how many we had to venture out to Plutaluang or better from me as Big Navy. “Big Navy” a course that a lot of our golfers complain about as in “the grass grows the wrong way”. Well I can take you to any hospital in Aussie to any cancer ward in that hospital and I am sure all and sundry would trade places and have one more game of golf at a course where the grass grows the wrong way! Big Navy on all reports was in great nic a little damp in places (so we invoked Lift, Clean & Place on the fairway thru to the green). It was as it has been and what happens at this time of the year, nobody in front and nobody

With The Magnificent Seven we played winner only and only played 4 x Near Pins, no long putts. We played East & South From the white tees. It was that man Younger again. Steve surged thru the pack and took the chequered flag. With 37 points it held him 9 shots clear of his nearest rival, Second in was Glen n Martin with Alex Field finishing third. The staff at the school started to build an extension as a classroom but the funds dried up and the new extension was left without walls or a floor. RESULT OF PSC MONTHLY TOURNAMENT Thursday 19th September Eastern Star Today was the monthly PSC golf tournament – with a difference! Originally scheduled for the 12th Sept, Jack received a message from an unrecognised number back at the beginning of August; later to discover it was from an old playing partner of his, Clive

Robinson. He gave Jack the heads up that Dave Richardson was leaving Pattaya for good and suggested that The PSC might like to organize a “thank you” golf day. Clive agreed to put the word out

but the event had to be moved back a week as a number of prospective players were in Hua Hin, including Clive. Hence the change of date. It was special as it was an appreciation for Dave Richardson 25+ years of support for PSC and Jack remembers Dave well at the Kronberg when he first came here

in the late 90’s and the PSC Office was right next door, when the regular mode of transport to the courses was a baht-bus, which was always a bit of an experience, especially when it rained.

For the third PSC tournament in row, everyone who signed up, turned up; so many congratulations to all our players for that. This time an excellent turnout of 40 players to be met as usual by Jack, the regular starter for the day, with Tim and Nigel taking charge of registration so efficiently under the watchful eye of the man himself, for on the reception desk was a photo of Dave. Overnight there had been some heavy rain, so no carts were allowed on the course and clean, lift and place through the green were the added rules for the PSC 2BB event. We started 10 minutes ahead of schedule at about 10.30, under cool cloudy conditions which remained that way until about the last two groups, when a light drizzle started and a few claps of thunder were heard in the distance. The rain unfortunately got heavier as the rounds progressed, however, the lightning stayed away and everyone completed the course. The Presentation was at Café Kromborg where Dave had run golf for 25 years. After all had arrived and relaxed it was time for the winner’s presentation. Nigel called order and reminded everyone that this was Dave’s Day and he appreciated all who took part. Nigel then introduced Golf Chairman Jack who outlined PSC future events, including the Club Championships at Burapha in January and although not a PSC event, The Poppy Day Tournament, a 2 Person Scramble at Bangpra on Thursday 31st Oct, full details to be released shortly. It was a memorable day that even the rain could not dampen! Back to Dave – Nigel introduced Peter Malhotra – President and

Founding member of PSC who noted Dave’s major contribution to the success of PSC that was formed some 40 years ago. Peter then made a presentation of a memento marking PSC’s appreciation of his support for PSC. He then announced the current Elective Committee has awarded Dave Richardson an Honorary Membership. PSC MONTHLY TOURNAMENT AT SOI DAO

Twelve members, nine partners and six children ventured up to Chatrium Soi Dao golf resort for a two day tournament. It was great to see the wives and children enjoy the trip. From the moment we were met at reception by the ever smiling Ann and the hotel staff until we left on Wednesday. We were treated like royalty by all staff. PSC Treasurer John Player and I met with the hotel manager Khun Wirachi Chakumrod (Wim) to discuss future cooperation between PSC and Soi Dao, I am happy to announce that in the near future we will be able to announce an on going stay and play deal for PSC members which will be better than can be obtained any where else. Wim has also guaranteed to be a major sponsor for our next Charity Classic. Thank you Wim!! We played from the yellow tees and had lift, clean and place. The course was in fantastic condition

although as we were following a tournament some of the pin placements were very tricky. Soi Dao would have to be one of the best courses in Thailand. Results: NTP’s Barry Copestake,Chaten Patel,Wayne Cotterell and Brendan Cope 2. Tim then invited manager Wim to

42/34.76 Well done to you both. It was pleasing to see nine out of twelve players received prizes Many thanks to golf chairman Jack for organizing this trip and to John for his help on tour. I would like to recommend Soi Dao as a great stay and play trip and can gaurantee on production of your PSC card Khun Wim and all

present the prizes to the overall winners Second overall Chaten Patel with scores of 35/41.75, which included a par front nine on day two. Winner overall Tony Oakes with scores of a fantastic first day of

staff will look after you. Another reason to be a member of PSC. We are going to make this an annual trip and hope more members and family’s will join us for a great few days at a fantastic resort

THE JOY OF FIREWORKS Continued from Page 1 Many historians believe that fireworks originally were developed in the second century B.C. in ancient Liuyang, China. It is believed that the first natural ‘firecrackers’ were bamboo stalks that when thrown in a fire, would explode with a bang because of the overheating of the hollow air pockets in the bamboo. The Chinese believed these natural “firecrackers” would ward off evil spirits. Sometime during the period 600900 AD, legend has it that a Chinese alchemist mixed potassium nitrate, sulfur and charcoal to produce a black, flaky powder – the first “gunpowder”. This powder was poured into hallowed out bamboo sticks (and later stiff paper tubes) forming the first man made fireworks. Fireworks made their way to Europe in the 13th century and by the 15th century they were widely used for religious festivals and public entertainment. The Italians were the first Europeans to manufacture fireworks and European rulers were especially fond of the use of fireworks to “enchant their subjects and illuminate their castles on important occasions.” Early U.S. settlers brought their

love of fireworks with them to the New World and fireworks were part of the very first Independence Day. However, the fireworks of today are a lot more advanced than the ones at George Washington’s backyard barbecue. It’s not just about new colours and bigger explosions, it’s also about the way that modern fireworks shows are composed like symphonies. They’re a bit more complicated than lighting a fuse and running for cover. There are a million different kinds of fireworks out there, ones that explode in a giant ball of strangely colored flame, ones that kerplow in the shape of a ringed planet, ones that whistle all the way up, and the ones that boom so powerful. But it hasn’t always been that way. Some time in the Italian Renaissance, pyrotechnicians realized they could get additional colors out of their kablams by adding ingredients like charcoal and steel. Today, they can conjure virtually any color imaginable by packing the gunpowder in various metal salts

different types of fireworks into the extravaganza of your dreams. Wildest of all, when your simulated grand finale is complete, you can export the show to a computerized firework-firing system. The result is incredible shapes in the sky that couldn’t be drawn without the precision of a digital sys-

tem. In Pattaya, at Beach Road, we are lucky to witness the amazing shows put on by various countries competing in competition every year. Gauranteed to put a smile on the faces of young and old, it’s an amazing way to be entertained.... for free!

— copper for blue, barium for green, and strontium for red. Besides the color, the things that set fireworks apart from each other are their size, sound, and shape. All three of those come down to the design of the shell. When you cram a lot of gunpowder into a small container, that’s when you get a huge bang. For a whistle, you need slow-burning chemicals pushing a steady stream of gas through a narrow tube. And to make a crackling sound, a firework has to be full of lead oxide, which pops and fizzles as it vaporizes in the air. As for the shape of the explosion, that depends on the arrangement of the firework’s ‘stars’, the small, explosive studs that spark into the actual points of light. New ingredients and shell designs may have opened up a world of colors and shapes, but digital innovations are what really make modern fireworks displays possible. Programs such as ‘Finale Fireworks’ make creating a show a lot like composing a piece of music. You choose a soundtrack and backdrop, then drag and drop
