CONTINENTAL BAKERY Located on the Soi Buakhao end of Soi Excite, Continental Bakery and Restaurant offers both indoor air conditioned seating as well as patio dining. As a full bakery supplying many businesses in Pattaya it opens at 5 am. A comprehensive offering of baked goods includes hard to find rye breads and bagels as well as deserts. Being a bakery and catering to walk in customers its extensive menu of breakfasts are available at 5 a.m. No more having to wait. The baked goods

are very reasonably priced, and I am unlikely to buy at the markets anymore. Even a variety of pizza crusts are available. The extensive menu offers a variety of European and American dishes as well as excellent Thai foods. There is even a section for vegetarians.

Today we started with two new Thai dishes. First the baked seafood combination consisting of a variety of seafood in curry baked in a potato. Somehow even a

shellfish was hidden in the middle. Delicious. This was followed by a red curry fish fillet which was as flavorful as it was beautiful. Moving on to other main courses, I noticed a very reasonably priced 200g ribeye steak and decided to give it a try. Served with a nice vegetable combo, gravy and your choice of potato I was not pleasantly surprised when it arrived medium rare as I had ordered. This was followed by a cordon bleu which was delicious, maybe one of the best I have had in Pattaya. Served with a nice side salad and a very tasty tartar sauce.

For a vegetarian dish we decided to modify one of the breakfasts. Specifically the swiss breakfast

with Rosti. Nicely done and we replaced the meat with a nice bowl of beans. The eggs were

cooked beautifully and completed the dish. I always appreciate having the beans separate rather

than flowing over the rest of the meal. I am always looking for American style hash browns and this Rosti came close. AS you would expect Continental bakery offers a wide variety of deserts. Both an incredible looking Black Forest cake, pies, as well as cheesecakes including blueberry. Unfortunately, shocking as it may seem, after eating 5 meals amongst three people none of us could eat desert. We were given a complimentary yogurt with honey to finish with. Nice, but in am going back for blueberry cheesecake. By Nick Athens

GLOBAL WOMENS SUMMIT CENTARA CARE

Over 1,000 female leaders expected to attend 2020 Global Summit of Women in Bangkok Preparations are being finalised for the prestigious 2020 Global Summit of Women (2020 GSW) that is scheduled to take place at the Centara Grand and Bangkok Convention Centre at CentralWorld in Bangkok, from 23 to 25 April, 2020. The opening ceremony will be presided over by Thai Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha, who will also deliver the keynote speech. The opening ceremony is expected to be attended by key women ministers from several countries from around ASEAN, plus from as far away as Africa and South America. “We look forward to bringing a global gathering of women to Thailand, world-renowned for its beauty, but not yet as well-known for its dynamic economy, where many women lead enterprises of all sizes,” Ms. Irene Natividad, President of the Global Summit of Women said. “That Thailand rank high in women’s economic par-

ticipation, both regionally and globally, making it an ideal venue under the 2020 Summit theme: ‘Women: Revolutionise Economies’. This reflects women’s roles in raising national GDP globally, as they entering the workforce as managers and altering business models and practices now and in the future.” Mrs. Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul, former Minister of Tourism and Sports and Chair of the Thai Host Committee, agreed. “We are confident that the 2020 GSW has made the right decision to host its 30th anniversary in Thailand, the country where Thai women play a pivotal role in creating and impacting development in all sectors – agricultural, community, industry, banking and finance, technology, transportation, energy, tourism and hospitality, as well as meetings and events. Thailand can be another notable case study and inspire global women leaders to move forward together, using their capabilities to help develop nations. More importantly, Thai women leaders

will continue to move forward in developing a strong Thailand.” Mrs. Srisuda Wanapinyosak, Deputy Governor for International Marketing – Europe, Africa, Middle East and Americas, Tourism Authority of Thailand, which supports the hosting of the 2020 GSW in Bangkok, said, “Thailand’s positive image as a preferred destination will be strengthened with the hosting of the 2020 GSW. The event will showcase the kingdom as a female-friendly destination, spotlighting TAT’s ongoing marketing activities for this particular tourist segment. Women not only have more purchasing power, but are often the primary decision-makers for destinations, length of stay and budgets.” Mrs. Nichapa Yoswee, Senior Vice President – Business, Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau, said, “TCEB is pleased to support the hosting of the 2020 GSW in Bangkok and welcome over 1,000 female leaders from all over the world. The event, which is estimated to generate 80

million Baht revenue to the Thai economy, is in line with TCEB’s strategy to help drive the Thai economy through providing support to the hosting of global events in Thailand. We hope that delegates attending the 2020 GSW will realise the important role of Thai women leaders in developing the nation, as well as the capabilities of Thailand as a leading destination for international events.” At the same time, the Thai host committee believes that the 2020 GSW will help Thai women leaders learn and enhance their strengths from other global women leaders while building and expanding personal networks based on a foundation of passion, understanding and friendship. All endeavours have been done to make this meeting a very special one to mark its 30th anniversary by placing focus on making it a ‘carbon neutral’ event with all participants from around the world having a hand in environmental conservation. The event will also invite local communities from around Thailand to present their products, thus creating new business opportunities for local communities to expand internationally.

PEC MOVING TO AMARI PATTAYA EXPATS CLUB is moving to AMARI RESORT on North Pattaya Beach Road, with the first meeting to be held there on Friday 31. July 2020. This is an upgrade to this state of the art newly re-build luxury resort. The PATTAYA EXPATS CLUB is the first and largest live advice and information service for foreigners in Thailand. PEC celebrated its 18th Year of advice forums in 2019; established in March 2001 with the motto ‘Expats Helping Expats – to live safely and legally in Thailand.’ The PEC meets every Friday morning at Amari Resort on North Pattaya Beach Road with news and

guest speakers from 1130am and breakfast buffet from 10.00am. All Nationalities are Welcome. Our aim is to provide foreign visitors and residents with good quality advice to comply with the laws of the Kingdom, to make their stay here safe and to be a channel for local Thai authorities to the foreign community, plus charitable efforts to the community. The PEC became the first of its kind in Thailand, when founded in Pattaya, growing rapidly through regular weekly meetings and via thousands of subscribers to its E-newsletters it promotes Pattaya worldwide through our website,

www.pattayaexpatsclub.info. Our format has always been informal to attract a wide audience but our focus has been to give clear advice on theme’s which are impor-

tant and practical to help foreigners and their families stay safely and legally in the Kingdom, to meet new friends in the community and to interact in a more culturally sensitive way with all Thais. Our lobby area has display tables from Thai companies (our Sponsors) offering our members free advice – with a Thai law firm, a Thai hospital health check desk, two Thai Insurance companies and a visa / immigration consultancy. We provide practical information on Thai Law, constant advice on applying for visa’s and keeping them up to date, how to safely and legally own a house, a car, a

condominium or motorcycle. There are feature talks given by notable Thai Doctors to encourage good health and from Insurance experts to ensure foreigners have adequate protection for

medical needs, home contents, vehicles etc. We aim to give visitors to Pattaya of all Nationalities a better understanding of the Thai culture, so foreign residents can better integrate into their adopted second home here in Pattaya. We feel this can be of benefit to prevent crime and assist Thai authorities with an additional channel of communication for local civic news, and which will assist

the tourism industry. Our club members enjoy a breakfast buffet at the Friday meetings. The featured speakers give big screen presentations from the Club laptop computer / digital projector set up. Members ask questions and receive answers from experts in their field such

as real estate agents, travel agents, bankers, investment consultants, hotel owners, hospitals, school headmasters, lawyers. There are some fun items too – movie people talking about their film careers, ‘world exclusives’ of major book authors who come to launch new novels in front of our audience, plus best beaches and islands to visit in the region. To make our live meetings far more widely received by the home expat TV audience we have a generous regular coverage given us by Pattaya People Media Group TV Channel to report the PECs weekly features. PPMG newsmagazine gives us 2 full page coverage as do local media to promote the club speakers and activities. We have cooperation of local Thai authorities to help us provide valuable information to members. We have a non-profit style 20 page Constitution document to regulate ourselves to a high standard. To report our finances legally we have a Ltd Company format transparently showing our cash handling from memberships and hotel entry tickets and sales of club products with accounts displayed monthly on our website. Perhaps the only Club in Pattaya to have a legal format entity.

Of course our advice and information format has long since been copied by newer organisations formed around Thailand and in Pattaya. Similar clubs have formed following the great success of our style of networking with expats. Among those newer advice clubs is ‘The Pattaya City Expats Club’ which incorporated itself 23. July 2003 with a Constitution supplied by the PEC. Others which have formed since the original PEC have included Dutch, French, Finnish and Scandinavian language clubs. In the PEC we have a German language, French & Finnish sister clubs. One of the PEC’s tasks, as Mother Club in Thailand for a range of expat advice clubs has been to assist new clubs around the Kingdom with model Constitution documents in Pattaya, Chiangmai, Koh Samui and Udon Thani. We formed an umbrella organisation for linked clubs called ATEC (Association of Thailand Expats Clubs.) Our aim is to continue to provide a good and worthwhile informal service to assist foreigners and we have several Telephone Help Volunteers. We aim to give club members a clear understanding and awareness of their responsibilities in staying in Thailand. It has also given us, in many years operationally, opportunity to make useful donations to Thai charitable causes here in Pattaya and by our foreigners awareness programmes to be a small contribution to assist the Thai authorities to reduce and prevent crime. We hope this is a useful service to have in the region with the biggest foreign population of tourist visitors and expats. We have been consistent in these aims throughout the years and by this hope to draw attention of Thai civic leaders to our service. We hope to be of assistance to Thai authorities and to forge even better links in the future. For any further information about Pattaya Expats Club please email: contact@pattayaexpatsclub.info or call Club President Niels Colov on 08-9911-1199.

MAKING A WILL IN THAILAND Here in Thailand making a will is a simple and straight forward process, but it can take on many forms and may become a little bit confusing. First of all a will should be in writing which is dated and signed by the testator - which is the title of whom the will belongs to. It must also be witnessed by two people - who should not benefit from the will directly by being a beneficiary. This form of will is a private document, which is le-

executed a will under the law of your home country or in another country other than Thailand, it is still recognized under Thai law. Take for example; the case of an Australian national who had made a will in England around 10 years ago and then moved here to Thailand where he had later passed away. The will that was made is still enforceable here in Thailand if it is still currently valid under Australian, English, or Thai law.

1. Descendants 2. Parents 3. Full Brothers and Sisters 4. Half Brothers and Sisters 5. Grandparents 6. Uncles and Aunts 7. Cousins

Most cases end with the more important and highly ranked heirs splitting the estate equally whilst the lower ranked heirs receive nothing. For example if the de-

ing whom to pass on your estate to, you can change your mind a 1,000 times before you die. Just one thing to remember about making a will is that you need to be in good health to make it, if you are in hospital then a doctor is required to write a letter say-

gally standing but any changes to the will requires the revocation of the previous will. Only the latest legal will is considered valid under Thai law. A will may also be made by a public document, through the local district chief or (nai umphur) by declaration to the district chief before two other persons as witnesses. This form of will is certified and sealed under the name of the district chief and any changes must also be made through a revocation and new declaration which again must be recertified. If you are a foreigner and have

If you pass away and do not have a will then “intestate succession” will determine who will receive your possessions. First off any property owned with a spouse deemed as “marital property” is equally divided between your spouse and your estate. This “marital property” which does not include possessions that belonged to you before marriage is divided before your estate is split again. This second split is made under the Civil and Commercial Code of Thailand, which is used to determine who your statutory heirs are. Relatives who are eligible to inherit your estate are as follows:

ceased did not have a spouse and any children but living parents, then they would divide the estate equally between the two of them whilst the rest of the relatives are excluded. Our comment: If you have not made a will the estate will be executed following the law, but if you have a will you can give whatever you want to whomever you wish to give it to. You can also change and update your will but be aware that you will have to revoke the previous one every time. The meaning of this is that if you change your mind in decid-

TRIBUTES TO DIANA MOUNTANOS Barry Upton I have been shocked and saddened by the news that my fab friend Diana had sadly passed on. She was the most wonderful radio co-presenter with such a wicked laugh and a beautiful soul. A top yoga expert, it was a joy to produce the yoga segments with her for TV. I chatted to her before her passing on numerous occasions after her leg break and she was always brought to tears from the pain. She was distraught that she couldn’t move properly. I tried to let her know that she was so lucky to have many friends here who loved her. Diana, you are sadly missed. R.I.P. Niels Colov Diana was a close friend of my wife Pooky and I. Pooky joined Diana in the popular Yoga TV programs and learned a lot from

Diana in yoga. We had many nice moments together with Diana and will always remember these good times. We will miss her a lot, she left us just too soon. Rest in peace dear friend. Patsanan Colov She was my best yoga teacher and my best friend. She was always nice and gave so many things to me. Am so sad she is gone forever. I will miss her and her voice a lot. Live in peace my love.

I enjoyed your yoga class. You we’re a lovely person. Love you always RIP

Phil Tom Coughlan Although we never met, your presence was felt everyday I listened to your sense of humour. Your compassionate views were appealing and above all you made each day that much better. A candle may have gone out but the making of an angel. RIP Diana you will be sadly missed by all friends in Pattaya. Olena Yaroshenka Rip Diana . It was too early to go away. Malcolm Bell Shame. Nice lady

Mike Bridge The best laugh on radio... She will be missed by many. Richard Borthwick (Rich B) A intelligent caring person with great energy and personality. A sad loss. Always friendly and happy in her beloved Pattaya Jeremaine Olt Gone to soon Diana was always so helpful, friendly and will also miss her wonderful voice. It was always a pleasure to listen to her and great to see how she made people happy. Rest in peace Diana. Tony (Tony’s Fitness) Diana; you are in a better place now, I thank you for all the wonderful things you have done for us at Tony’s, as you know, I think the world of you, everything happens for a reason, someone powerful has a important plan for you, because you are capable, be ready for your big task Diana, a person like you will make this multiverses even more magnificent: We just miss you so much, goodbye for now, till we meet again. Gay Burnette Diana was my “quirky” American friend. We shared an enthuasism to improve the mental and physical health of those around us. As all “genuine” friends we frequently agreed to disagree, all the time learning more and more from one another. Your delightfully funny attitude to your life as a 60+year old female in Pattaya (!!) frequently made me laugh. You introduced me to Barry Upton and started me on the radio with Barry on the morning show. Such fun that was. Another lasting

friendship. And of course your own successful business “pure yoga pattaya” and the many advantages yoga provides was your powerhouse. It was your platform and you performed with such ease and consideration. We will miss your “yoga pose of the day” and your voice so clear and precise. I will miss you Diana...I could do with another guardian angel my friend! Ren Lexander The first instinct of Diana Mountanos was always to give: to give her energy, give her knowledge, give her support. The aura of giving energy which surrounded her is missed by all who knew and admired her. Diana, you were a gift. Unknown Diana was my friend and yoga teacher She was a vibrant and optimistic woman who enhanced the lives of those who came into her holistic world Diana walked the talk I loved and respected her positive energy and influence She was a teacher and role model to many and it has been an absolute privilege to know Diana and call her my friend. RIP. Peter Mountanos Diana came to pattaya after years of suffering from a debilitating medical condition in America. Her pursuit of yoga came as a way to mitigate the symptoms. Diana found a new life in pattaya. Within a year her condition was gone, and the management at Pattaya People and Tony’s gym gave her a new start on the rest of her life. She found great pleasure being accepted and helping people via her unique brand of yoga. She would have wanted to thank everyone who came into her life and brought her happiness.

In the early 1990’s Pattaya was one of the main destinations for children and teenagers running away from their families, their home towns and villages. Mostly escaping poverty, there were also problems with drug and alcohol and many children were victims of abuse. In the early 1990’s Pattaya was also a very popular destination for men looking to have sex with children, boys and girls. Because of this,Father Ray Brennan opened the Home for

On New Year’s Eve 2019 the gates of the Home closed for the very last time. The current one hundred residents packed their bags and made the three kilometer journey to the Father Ray Children’s Village, located near Lake Mabprachan. New houses have been con-

The Father Ray Foundation has always tried to move with the times, changing the way it provides care and education as new research and practices on child care is released. More information can be found at www.fr-ray.org or email info@frray.org

DR.KAMALJIT SINGH HEALTH TIPS:TO LOSE 100 POUNDS OR MORE The rules are different when you have a large amount of weight to lose. See what weight loss experts and people have done it before suggest- Dr.Kamaljit Singh.

It’s All About Planning: - When you have a lot of weight to lose, it means playing the long game. And during that time, you’ll face challenges. Weight loss experts and people who have done it offer you their ideas to cut calories, fight the “hangry,” make exercise easier, stay on track, and more. Some are tried-and-true, and others may surprise you. Go Big for Breakfast: - People who eat more in the morning and less at night tend to lose more weight. Some studies suggest that starting your day with a high-protein meal — especially warm, solid food — helps you feel fuller and less hungry later. Shoot for 350-400 calories with at least 25 grams of protein, says Domenica Rubino, MD, director of the Washington Center for Weight Management & Research. Keep a Photo Diary: - “We have horrible memories in terms of what we eat,” says Susan Albers, PsyD, author of EatQ. Save your food photos in a daily file. Before your next snack or meal, review them. They’ll remind you what you’ve already eaten. And that may help you decide to downsize or choose something else. Use an App: - “I just do not see food and portions the way normally thin people see them,” blogger Lisa Durant says. She used My Fitness Pal to focus on her relationship with food. She tracked what she ate and how much. That helped her be honest with herself. She also set weight loss and fitness goals to track her progress. Without an app, “I would absolutely gain some weight back.” Try a Meal Replacement Plan:Under a licensed professional’s care, you’ll eat one regular meal per day and swap the others for special shakes, soups, or bars. “If you can stick to it, you’ll see big results in 6 months to a year,” says Ken Fujioka, MD, an obesity specialist at the Scripps Clinic in San Diego. Set Up Your Food Storage: - Out of sight, out of mind — and mouth. After you purge your home of those treats you can’t resist, Albers recommends taking the idea a step further: Assign shelves in the pantry and the fridge so your healthy food becomes easy to see and reach. Put fresh veggies and fruit at eye level instead of inside a drawer, and you’re more likely to grab them when you open the door.

ISSUE 622  FEBRUARY 2020

Shop Smart: - Don’t leave your meals to chance. Have ingredients on hand so you aren’t tempted to resort to takeout. Think about menus that work for the household: Maybe your veggie stirfry can be their side dish, too. Make a grocery list together, even if you’re cooking separately.Stay out of bulk warehouse stores, Albers says. The oversized items can invite overeating.

Look Past the Pounds: - Regardless of what the scale says, your body may still be changing in a good way. Rubino says, “Remind yourself what you’ve gained by losing the weight.” Are your clothes getting looser? Are you losing inches? Is your blood pressure better? If you have diabetes, have your sugar levels improved? Can you handle more exercise? Celebrate those non-scale victories, too!

Find a Fan Club: - Support from a group can help you lose more weight than doing it alone. You’ll gain perspective, encouragement, tips — even a little competition, if that’s the kind of thing that gets you motivated. Durant, who lost 115 pounds, started with Weight Watchers. “My leader was fantastic,” she says. Besides in-person meetings, check out online forums and social media. Support from family and friends helps keep the weight off, too.

Get Checked for Sleep Apnea: - You may not be resting as well as you think you are. This condition, which interrupts your breathing while you sleep, often affects people who are overweight. It can disrupt your slumber and you won’t know it. Studies show that a lack of sleep alters hormones that control hunger. Rubino suggests being tested and treated.

Outsmart Your Inner Critic: - When (let’s be honest, there’s no “if” about it) you get off-track, it can be hard to forgive yourself. So pretend it’s a friend who slipped up and is upset, Rubino says. Write a note to them. Then read it out loud — to yourself. It will likely be kinder and more encouraging than anything the little voice in your head would say.

Ask About Weight Loss Medicine: - Once you’ve lost 5% to 10% of your weight, your body makes adjustments to fight losing any more, Fujioka says. Hormones that signal you’ve had enough to eat don’t get sent to your brain, and you’re still hungry. “We use medications to give that feeling of being full,” he says. When that point comes, talk to your doctor about whether a prescription drug or over-the-counter product could help you keep going.

Try Physical Therapy: - You’ll learn to reconnect with your body, Rubino says. A physical therapist is trained to work with people who have medical issues and trouble moving in their daily lives. Think of them as someone who’ll get you ready for the personal trainer. Your therapist will design a program, tailored for you, to improve your balance, strength, and range of motion. PT can often help ease joint pain you may have, too.

Play Down Plateaus: - It happens: The scale won’t move, no matter what you do. Try not to think “failure.” Instead, give yourself credit for not adding pounds. That alone is a triumph, Rubino says. If you haven’t seen a change for 3 months, then it’s time to revisit your diet and exercise plan. For more details: Dr. Kamaljit Singh M.D. (A.M), PhDMobile (+66) 869032543, (+91) 9803044056, Email: info@drkamalholistic.com. Web: www.drkamalholistic.com.

Work Your Muscles: - You may not realize it, but you’ve built them up just by moving your extra weight around. And as you lose body fat, you want to keep those muscles. They burn fat and calories! But if you don’t use them, you’ll lose them. Mira Rasmussen, an exercise physiologist, likes wall squats, with the help of an exercise ball for body alignment. These work most of the major muscles below your waist at once. Get in the Pool: - Swimming is a whole-body, non-impact workout with a fantastic calorie burn, Rasmussen says. The water helps hold you up, so there’s no pressure on your joints. Plus, it saves time by combining cardio and muscle-building in a single activity. If exercise is hard for you, try doing it in chest-deep water, which can reduce swelling, enhance circulation, and help relieve pain from inflammation.

Barry has also received formal instruction of 5 hours in the treatment and how to reverse diabetes. One of the things which appears to stand out with the current treatment is that the accepted paradigm is to treat the symptom, which is high blood sugar, and not the actual cause which is a hormonal problem, and is akin to treating an alcoholic with whisky! With the current paradigm, it’s impossible to reverse T2 diabetes. Recent treatments have been very successful in reversing the malady. Unfortunately, most GP’s are not aware of this new treatment. We have Award-Winning Novelist, Christopher G. Moore with us talking about the art of writing and sharing his latest book: Dance Me to the End of Time (Vincent Calvino Crime Novel Book 17)

It is the era of the Great Upheaval and the Resistance, a time when people split their lives between virtual reality and the real world of sunken streets and khlongs swallowed by rising seas, in a land where resources are stretched and the poor are thirsty. In the final book of the Vincent Calvino crime series, Calvino searches for a missing teenage “water boy,” and ends up caught between a Chinese-controlled AI named Henrietta, hordes of desperate climate migrants, fanatic religious guilds and a new breed of supersmart scientists, all determined to stay alive.

Christopher will be making an appearance at Bangkok Edge 2020 on 1st or 2nd February in Bangkok. Other than that, his appearance at Pattaya Expats Club will be the first public talk about Dance Me to the End of Time As always when Christopher speaks we expect to have a big turnout for Calvino’s fanfare book. It is set in the climate changed future of Bangkok and Thailand. And it is the only Calvino novel written in the first person. The people who’ve seen the manuscript have been very positive about the story. About Christopher: Christopher G. Moore is a Canadian writer who has lived in Thailand for 25 years. He studied law at Oxford University, taught law at University of British Columbia, and practiced law before becoming a full-time writer. His first book His Lordship’s Arsenal was published in New York to a critical acclaim in 1985. His has since written over 20 novels, a book on Thai language, and over 200 essays. He has also collaborated with other writers and edited three anthologies of short stories and essays. Moore is best known for his popular Vincent Calvino Private Eye series which currently includes 13 novels, and his cult classics, Land of Smiles Trilogy, a behind-thesmiles study of his adopted country, Thailand. In his early career Moore was called “complex, moody, rewarding” (Chicago Sun-Times) and “a real writer and one to watch”?(Publisher’s Weekly). After Moore has moved to Thailand in search of materials in the late 1980s his body of work grew with many novels published that were set largely in Southeast Asia, in particular Thailand. He was among the first, if not the first, who wrote detective novels with the westernstyle protagonist set in Thailand. Moore has enjoyed a strong readership in Asia and Europe before his Vincent Calvino novels were published in the United States and the United Kingdom starting in 2007. He was considered “among the most important authors who [brought] foreign crime fiction into Germany” in the mid-1990s (Krimitips). He is also often praised for his craft. “Moore is a brilliant storyteller and a masterful char-

acter inventor” (CrimiCouch.de), “a marvelous and inventive writer who is able to combine literary merit with good old genre fiction” (Georgia Straight). On his writing style, “Moore is a stylist much like the writers of the early to mid-20th century who kickstarted the P.I. genre in America. He writes with the angry and sad voice of Ross Macdonald and the flow of and beauty of Raymond Chandler. Penning his books in the third-person, he uses allegory and symbolism to great effect. The Calvino series is distinctive and wonderful, not to be missed, and I’m pleased to see that it is finally becoming better known in the States” (The Rap Sheet). Moore has also been described as “The Hemingway of Bangkok” (The Globe and Mail), “Dashiell Hammett in Bangkok” (San Francisco Chronicle), and “W. Somerset Maugham with a bit of Elmore Leonard and Mickey Spillane thrown in for good measure”?(The Japan Times). Moore’s work is often noted for its rich cultural observations and insights and his knowledge of Southeast Asia. “Moore’s work doesn’t flinch from cultural detail or complex social analysis” (International Herald Tribune). “It’s easy to see why Moore’s books are popular: While seasoned with a spicy mixture of humor and realism, they stand out as model studies in EastWest encounters, as satisfying for their cultural insights as they are for their hardboiled action”?(The Japan Times). After years of writing out of Southeast Asia, Moore started to gain wider recognition in the early 2000s. The third novel in his Vincent Calvino series Zero Hour in Phnom Penh(originally published under the title Cut Out) won the prestigious German Critics Award for International Crime Fiction (DeutscherKrimiPreis) in 2004 and the Spanish Premier Special Book Award Sema Negra in 2007. The second novel in the same series Asia Hand won the Shamus Award for Best Original Paperback in 2011. His novella “Reunion” (published as part of the anthology Phnom Penh Noir) was a finalist for the 2013 Arthur Ellis Award in the category of Best Novella. Moore’s novels have been translated into 14 languages and his Vincent Calvino series has been optioned for film production by FilmNation. His latest novel is

Crackdown, 15th in the Vincent Calvino series. His fiction and essays have appeared in Evergreen Review, The Brooklyn Rail, Arena, CULturMAG, The Phnom Penh Post, and Mala Literary Journal. An additional bit of background: I’m also the founder of Changing Climate, Changing Lives Film Festival 2020 that will showcase short films by young Thais about the impact of climate change on people’s lives and the actions being taken at the local/community level to mitigate or adapt to the adverse effects. Here’s our website: https:// www.climatefilmfestival2020.com he has put together an incredible Advisory Board. They have the support of Thai film makers, directors, NGOs, International and local journalists. The new Calvino fits into his concerns about climate change and creates a possible world ravaged by climate change.

CAFE KRONBORG 13th January 2020 Pleasant Valley Double for Deryl! Café Kronborg golfers today went to Pleasant Valley hoping the windmill would keep on turning and the course would be pleasant for all of us. Alas, this was not to be as the windmill sails were stagnant and so was our golf. There was no cat to kick so we blamed the poor condition of the greens compared with their condition a few weeks ago. No golf course is easy but I doubt whether anybody would describe this course as difficult! Just like our last visit only one of our group played better than handicap and that was our double winner Deryl Neufeld with his 38 points. Even our ‘B’ Flight, with our numerous shots, suffered with the first three places only being able to achieve 35 points each. Hopefully there are pleasant days ahead and that our next set of results for this course shows that you need at least 40 points to win here! We welcomed back our old friend Eddie (the eagle) Glinseck from the USA together with Anders Moller, Daniel Hirsch and Bjorguin Hallgrimsson. ‘A’ Flight (0-20) 1st Deryl Neufeld (15) 38 points 2nd Kjeld Ravn (19) 35 points

3rd Henning Olsen (20) 35 points ‘B’ Flight (21+) 1st Tiziano Dal Pastro (26) 35 points 2nd Jan Lovgreen ( 26) 35 points 3rd Carole Kubicki ( 21) 35 points Nearest the pin Number 5 Daniel Hirsch Number 13 Peter Hammond Longest first putt Number 18 Daniel Hirsch

16th January 2020 Treasure Hills Café Kronborg golfers today visited Treasure Hills. Our day was generously sponsored by our birthday boy Ronnie Rattle but looking for treasure today was as difficult as looking for a cat to kick!! For the second time this week our group displayed a dismal perfor-

mance and only one of our players came out of the day with credit. Our ‘A’ Flight winner Richard Kubicki failed to score on the first hole but then went on to having four birdies and finished with 35 points. For most of the rest of the field it’s not worth writing home about!! This is a difficult golf course that can bite you very quickly and frequently but at least it should be possible for ‘B’ Flight players in particular to master it! We must do better than this – perhaps the mid season break – due to the Club Championship – will help all of us to refocus!!! We welcomed Keith Chenier from Canada and our winners today were – ‘A’ Flight (0-21) 1st Richard Kubicki (11) 35 points 2nd Henning Olsen (20) 34 points 3rd Kjeld Ravn (19) 32 points 4th Carole Kubicki (21) 30 points ‘B’ Flight ( 22+) 1st Karen Brown ( 29) 30 points

GROWLING SWAN Played out of “BOGEY’S BAR & GRILL.” STABLEFORD. TREASURE HILL G.C.20 th of Janurary, 2019. He’s back, Steve Younger takes advantage of his nemesis not playing!! Nine golfers signed up to have a crack at today’s venue Treasure Hill, we are still struggling with numbers, and this is such a good course! The only good to come out of this was the general lack of numbers at and on the course. “High Season’ Hmmmmmm! The course was as always in great nic, they appear to have plenty of water as unlike other courses it did not appear to be too dry. Weather was good to us but as the day got longer the mercury

did rise making the last hour on the course a little uncomfortable! Late starts do not suit us and that’s for sure! We were playing one flight only and again we were only playing the four Near The Pin novelties, no Long First Putts today. It was Steve Younger that had bounced back and came up trumps on the day, two points was the difference between first and second. Second home was recently returned Dave Maw falling two shots from the lead. Finishing in third place was (never far from the money) Keith Buchanan. WINNERS from TREASURE HILL GC. 1stSteve Younger(14) 33 pts. 2ndDave Maw(18) 31 pts. 3rdKeith Buchanan(36) 30 pts. NEAR THE PIN.

LONG FIRST PUTT. Did not play these today. In the photo we have from L to R;Sean Millar, Dave Maw, Todays winner Steve Younger and Allan Ray! Back at Bogey’s wewelcomedback Sean Millar and Dave Maw but then had to bid farewell to Allan Ray leaving us to return home. Good luck mate I hope the Handicapper is kind to you in your absence, travel safe and we do look forward to catching up to you again soon. Always Al, “Always look on the bright side of Life.” D-For was on leave! For serious golfing with a dash of fun, the Growling Swan welcomes golfers of all persuasions, be it young or old, male or female. We generally play on Mondays and Thursdays at any one of the fine courses around Pattaya. LINKS GOLF SOCIETY Pattavia, Wednesday January 22, 2020 The Count Raking in Green Jackets As our bus turned into the golf course we wondered if there would be enough (or any) caddies for our 52 golfers, recalling a report from another Society a week before. There was indeed another large group at the course but they were sent to the tenth tee, leaving the first tee open for Links Golf. The round got under way a few minutes early and every group made good time with, surprisingly, no hold-ups, considering the numbers on the course. Weather was fine and warm to hot with the occasional breeze for comfort. The fairways were, as usual, in very good condition with plenty of grass and a nice green colour. The rough has been allowed to dry by using the water on the fairways and greens. These greens are starting to speed up again and there were many sad stories of three and four putts. If you can tame the greens you will score well, as four players who all had great scores can attest. It’s just not fair when you score 42 points, only to be beaten on a countback for the Green Jacket, but that’s what happened to Colin Smith today. A great effort and a win in ‘A’ flight. Paul Gill and Patrick Engels both scored 35 points and went to countback for second and third

with Paul getting the nod. Mike Ehlert is back in form and held fourth spot with 34 points. John Malet DeCarteret (The Count) carried over his form from Monday by pipping Colin for his twoin- a- row Green Jackets and the win in ‘B’ flight. Soren Hansen, having his first game with us since his return to LOS, did well to score 39 points to take second place. After a disaster last week, Larry Slattery showed what he can do to grab third spot with 37 points and Colm Lawlor survived a countback on 35 points for fourth. Rick Pope went missing for a couple of weeks but came back fresh to score 41 points and the ‘C’ flight win. Again, an excellent score but can’t get the Green Jacket. We called Bryan Barrel a surprise packet a couple of weeks ago but he is not a surprise any more after making second place with 35 points. Another countback, this time John Masters took third ahead of Mike Firkin which left Kenny Jepson missing out. All three had 33 points. Near Pins ‘A’ flight: Derek Phillips, Bob Stokes, Paul Durkan Near Pins ‘B’ flight: Rick Pope, Bill Stewart, Garry Hookey, Colm Lawlor Longest First Putt: Mike Ehlert. ‘ ‘A’ Flight (0-14) 1st Place–Colin Smith (14) – 42pts 2nd Place – Paul Gill (11) - 35 pts c/back 3rd Place–Patrick Engels (10)-35pts 4th Place - Mike Ehlert (12) - 34pts

ISSUE 622  FEBRUARY 2020

“B” Flight (15-20) 1st Place – John Malet DeCarteret (17) – 42 pts 2nd Place–Soren Hansen(17)-39pts 3rd Place–Larry Slattery(20)- 37pts 4th Place-Colm Lawlor (15)- 35 pts c/back ‘C’ Flight ( 21+) 1st Place – Rick Pope (21) - 41pts 2nd Place–Bryan Barrell(34)- 35pts 3rd Place – John Masters (24) - 33 pts c/back 4th Place - Mike Firkin (24) - 33 pts c/back Best Front Nine ( non winners)…. Mike Kaps….19 pts c/back Best Back Nine (non winners)….. Dave Arataki ….20 pts c/back The ‘silly hat’ award went to a different type of countback. There were too many silly things, eg. Four players who tried to get on a bus going to the Water Park before being told. Another who wanted the bus turned back as he had left his change of clothes bag at the bar, and yet one more who put his name on an ‘A’ flight near pin when his handicap is 27. It was now out of who drew the ‘short straw’ (or actually broken tooth picks). John Pearce (name on wrong pin) was the lucky winner of the ‘silly hat’ The ‘wig’ prize was much easier, won by newbie, Kevin Roberts, for his very low score. It’s high season an we must expect crowds, but apart from a long line waiting to pay green fees, Pattavia managed things well and we were able to get started slightly early, satisfied customers. Pattaya Links Golf Society is a PSC affiliated, friendly group and welcomes golfers of all levels. We play Monday ,Wednesday and Friday.” Links” Bar is towards the Southern end of Soi Buakhow. Check the Big board out front for upcoming games schedule. Sign up at Links Bar or online to join us for a fun day of competition golf.

BUNKER BOYS Monday, January 13th Crystal Bay C & A White 1st Mashi Kaneta (17) 42 points 2nd Keith Norman (12) 40 points 3rd Andy Gray (23) 39 points 4th Phil Mashiter (4) 39 points 5th Peter Kelly (13) 38 points Near pins Tony Berry, Keith Norman, Ken Elmore, & Jimmy Carr. Following last Friday’s debacle, it was nice to get back to normality today. Everybody arrived at Woodys Bar on time, no transportation issues, we were able to tee off ahead of schedule and finish in about four hours which is quite acceptable in high season. We were allocated the C & A nines and what a difference there was between them, the C nine was overwatered and very damp in places and the greens were particularly slow compared to the A nine. There was no wind to speak of so allowing for the difference in green speed there was no other reason not to score well and several did just that. In another rare visit, Mashi Kaneta swept the boards with an excellent score of forty-two points to capture first place. Keith Norman made a return to form after a bit of a lull with a solid forty points in second place. Once again Andy Gray found himself in the winners circle off a lower handicap of twenty-three with thirty-nine points pushing Phil Mashiter into fourth on countback. Peter Kelly brought up the rear with a very respectable thirtyeight. All the near pins were taken going to Tony Berry, Keith Norman, Ken Elmore, and Jimmy Carr. Wednesday, January 15th Bangpra 1st Peter Kelly (14) 38 points 2nd Les Cobban (8) 37 points 3rd Michael Brett (17) 37 points 4th Neil Jones (22) 36 points 5th Stuart Tinkler (17) 36 points 6th Dave Ashman (22) 34 points Near pins Keith Norman, Stuart Tinkler, Peter Kelly, & Tony Robbins. Our midweek game was played at Bangpra where we encountered the usual problem of having to wait till the appointed hour

before we could check-in and pay green fees. The course was very busy so a very slow round of over four and a half hours ensued. Whilst still very dry the course was in much better condition than expected, clearly, some of last Friday’s downpour at King Naga fell on here also. A good field of twenty-six was on hand, just about the right number to generate strong competition without any group having to wait too long to tee off, and keen competition is just what we got. Some very good scored were returned with the top five all at thirty-six or over. Peter Kelly had a very hot putter today and topped the list of winners with thirty-eight points. Les Cobban and Michael Brett had thirty-seven each with Les having the better back nine taking second. Likewise, Neil Jones and Stuart Tinkler were locked together on thirty-six with Dave Ashman bringing up the rear with thirty-four. A very happy day for Keith Norman winning all three sixes and a near pin, The other near pins went to Stuart Tinkler, Peter Kelly, & Tony Robbins. Shot of the day went to Colin Greig who shed his right shoe and sock to play out of the water on the Gordon Melia hole which he did successfully. Back at the clubhouse, there was a power outage which meant changerooms in complete darkness and showers with no pressure and only boiling hot water. A very funny incident occurred on the eighteenth tee when a monkey stole a soft drinks bottle from a cart and refused to give it back, it was quite hilarious watching the monkey struggle to get the drink out of the bottle which he had still failed to do by the time we left him to his puzzle, clearly a monkeys is not as smart as octopus. In the coming weeks, there are a few events to watch out for, first The Annual Memorial Tournament on Wednesday, February 5th at Greenwood, second the annual trip to Soi Dao organised by Keith Norman on Monday, February 10th, and finally, on Wednesday, February 26th the

inaugural “ Ironman” event consisting of golf at King Naga, (special rules apply) followed by a dominos and killer pool at Woodys Bar organised by Daryl Vernon, something very different and should be a lot of fun. Friday, January 17th Parichat, Rainbow. 1st Tony Berry (14) 37 points 2nd Roland Davison (12) 36 points 3rd Ken Elmore (19) 36 points 4th Michael Brett (17) 36 points 5th Dave Galvin (22) 35 points Near pins Phil Mashiter, Colin Greig, Ken Elmore, Michael Brett. It seems like somebody has cast an evil spell on the Bunker Boys, for the second Friday in a row today’s booking at Treasure Hill didn’t exist so we had to make alternate arrangements. After some phone calls Greenwood nor Pattavia could accommodate us so we made our way to Parichat where we played a game of rainbow. As one might expect we had a delay of about thirty minutes before teeing off and then with only one caddie for every two players, other caddies joined in along the way. The course was in great shape again but the greens were deceptively slow. As has been said many times this course is ideally suited to the rainbow format. One new golfer who never played sixes or rainbow before had the rules explained to him by Jimmy on the first tee and was told that at the end of the round he would be advised how much he owed, not sure he got the joke. A very tight competition for places with only two points separating first from last. Tony Berry took first with thirty-seven points. Roland Davison, Ken Elmore, and Michael Brett were all locked together on thirty -six points and placed by the countback rule. Dave Galvin finally made it to the winner’s circle for the first time in eight years of trying with thirtyfive points, a round that contained the only eagle of the day. Near pins went to Phil Mashiter, Colin Greig, Ken Elmore, and Michael Brett. On the tenth fairway we noticed several small holes about the size of a golf ball, a caddie said they had been made by snakes so golfers should be on the lookout particularly on this part of the course. A further problem facing the Bunker Boys today was the fact that somebody tore up the club rule book. CHINESE HOROSCOPE 2020 RAT Horoscope 2020 You skillful Rats will have a banner year in 2020. Not only will you find many lucrative job opportunities, but you will also get a chance to expand your impressive skill set. If you want a promotion, you would be wise to showcase your organizational and managerial skills, which will be in great demand. Romance could take a back seat to work for some of you overambitious Rats. Those of you who are single may prefer to pursue your dream career rather than get involved with affairs of the heart. For those who are in relationships, you must take care not to neglect your partners for the sake of work.

Horse Horoscope 2020 You could have difficulty in the Year of the White Metal Rat as a hot-tempered Horse. 2020 will place great emphasis on logic, analysis, and reliable facts. Rationality will trump emotion. Therefore, if you are going to maintain professional stability, you must learn to adopt a detached attitude toward work. The Year of the Rat places great emphasis on social pursuits. Going to parties, cookouts, and galas may not have much appeal for moody Horses. If you are looking for love, you must learn to cultivate happiness regardless of your romantic status. 2020 is your chance to learn that contentment comes from within.

OX Horoscope 2020 As an honest, reliable Ox, you will prosper during the Year of the Rat. Instead of exaggerating your talents, setting unrealistic deadlines, and promising more than you can deliver, you are very accurate when giving estimates. As a result, you will win business from flashier companies that are used to dealing with people who are all style and no substance.

Sheep Horoscope 2020 You cheerful Sheep will find professional success in 2020. That’s because the Year of the Rat rewards people who tackle their work with relentless optimism. Landing a new job, getting a promotion, and receiving a series of bonuses are all possibilities for you. As an imaginative Sheep, you could also make a fortune by inventing an app, product, or service. Rat years put greater emphasis on friendship than love for Sheep. If you are wise, you’ll resist a tendency toward self-pity. Instead, count your blessings and seek the support of your closest friends and relatives in 2020.

Tiger Horoscope 2020 As an enthusiastic Tiger, you must take care during the Year of the White Metal Rat, which offers many opportunities. If you bite off more than you can chew, you may end up suffering from health problems. As a wise Tiger, steering clear of junk food and taking regular breaks will allow you to make good career decisions. When it comes to romance, you attached Tigers should focus on being the best partners you can be. For your sign, 2020 will put more emphasis on giving than receiving. If you’re a single Tiger, you may decide to embrace your independence during the Year of the Metal Rat, getting affection from friends and relatives instead. Rabbit Horoscope 2020 The outgoing energy of 2020 might intimidate you as a hesitant Rabbit. If you’re going to achieve career success this year, you must develop better social skills. Maintaining positive work relationships and an extensive social network will allow you Rabbits to hop into a corner office. As a timid sign, developing greater confidence is also critical for you. Love could burst into flower for affectionate Rabbits in 2020. Intimate dinners, moonlit walks, and fireside chats could pave the way to a serious commitment in 2020. For those Rabbits that are already in relationships, beware of flirting during this restless Rat year. Dragon Horoscope 2020 As a dynamic Dragon, you will thrive on the Rat year’s stimulating energy. 2020 is ideal for you to get a promotion, venture into another field, or launch a business. Dragons are highly independent, so you should remember that Metal years emphasize teamwork. Going solo will create unwanted challenges, so collaboration is key. Being the self-sufficient Dragon you are, love won’t play a major role in your life this year. The Year of the Rat will be a time of selfexploration for you. Taking up a spiritual practice, going on a pilgrimage, or undergoing counseling are all good possibilities to explore. For you Dragons in committed relationships, become less demanding and more accommodating in 2020. Snake Horoscope 2020 The pessimistic Snake could have difficulty in 2020. Rat years reward those with upbeat energy and optimistic outlooks. If you are going to achieve success this year, you should take extra pains to practice the power of positive thinking. Following a happy person’s example could cultivate professional satisfaction for you. You Snakes are secretive by nature, which could lead to trouble in love this year. That’s because the Year of the Rat places great emphasis on honesty. If you can learn to become straightforward about your needs and desires, love can flourish. As a self-doubting Snake, one of the best lessons you can learn in 2020 is to love yourself.

Monkey Horoscope 2020 Vivacious Monkeys will have lots to celebrate in the Year of the White Metal Rat. It’s a great year for you to attend school — 2020 could mean earning an advanced degree with honors. As a Monkey, you would do well to serve as a consultant, adviser, or coach. Rat years always reward clear communicators. Friendship can easily turn to love for many of you Monkeys this year. Steering a platonic relationship into romantic waters is strongly advised for you. Thanks to the loyal energy of the Rat year, those of you Monkeys who are already partnered will fall even deeper in love with your significant others. Rooster Horoscope 2020 As an earnest Rooster, you will find plenty of opportunities for professional advancement in 2020. The Year of the Rat rewards those who are hardworking, authentic, and sincere. As a result, you would be wise to apply for a dream job, move into a rapidly growing field, or pursue a promotion. If you’re a single Rooster, you should take care not to mix business with pleasure during the Year of the Rat. If you fall in in love with one of your colleagues, you should take care to find employment elsewhere. For Roosters in committed relationships, you might have to resist temptation in 2020. Rat years are famously flirty for you charmers. Dog Horoscope 2020 Hardworking Dogs will be in great professional demand during the diligent Year of the Rat. Most of you would be wise to stay with your current employers, as the chances for a raise and promotion are strong. For you Dogs seeking employment elsewhere, you should only entertain job offers from well-established companies. As a sensitive Dog, you could fall in love at first sight in 2020. Single Dogs should obey romantic impulses this year. For those Dogs who are in serious relationships, you could buy a beautiful new home with your partner. Rat years are also good for starting a family. Pig Horoscope 2020 When it comes to work, you complacent Pigs shouldn’t rest on your laurels in 2020. The Year of the Rat places great emphasis on hard work and efficiency. By picking up the pace and spending more time at the office, you can maintain financial stability. If you want a promotion, you must double your productivity. Rat years are highly romantic for affectionate Pigs. Playing the dating game will pay off handsomely for you if you’re single. If you are in a serious relationship, you will feel like you’re on a second honeymoon with your partner as Metal years cultivate intimacy.

MUSIC FESTIVALS The Burapa Bikers Festival, held every mid February, is a week long collection of events culminating in the three day music extravaganza at the Chaiyapreuk Stadium arena, just outside Pattaya. Initially, some of the earliest rock festivals were built on the foundation of pre-existing jazz and blues festivals, but quickly evolved to reflect the rapidly changing musical tastes of the time. For example, the United Kingdom’s National Jazz Festival was launched in Richmond during 1961. The first three of these annual outdoor festivals featured

Mountain Music Festival on Mount Tamalpais and the Monterey International Pop Festival. The concept caught fire and spread quickly as rock festivals took on a unique identity and attracted significant media attention around the world. By 1969, promoters were staging dozens of them. According to Bill Mankin, in their dawning age rock festivals were important socio-cultural milestones. It would not be an exaggeration to say that, over a few short years, rock festivals played a unique, significant – and underappreciated – role in fueling the countercultural shift that swept not only America but many other countries during the 1960s. It seems fitting that one of the most enduring labels for the entire generation of that era was derived from a rock festival: the ‘Woodstock Generation’. Reflecting their musical diversity and the then-common term ‘pop music’, for the first few years, particularly in the US, many rock

Additionally, there are so many different types of motor bikes on show plus many other attractions such as Native American horses, sometimes uniquely racing long nosed motor bikes around the arena. We are blessed and so lucky to have the opportunity to go back to those hippie days of the late 60s and have our own ‘Woodstock’ here in the Pattaya

area. I personally always look forward to contributing by appearing on one of the stages, which I have done for the last seven years, especially when invited two years running to play guitar with Ron ‘Bumblefoot’ Thal formerly of the iconic band ‘Guns & Roses’. Don’t miss out and have a top music festival experience.

The upcoming 23rd event will be, once again, be self policed with many retailer stalls and original art on show all over the arena. In 1965, for the first time the event included more blues, pop and rock acts than jazz, and by 1966, when the event moved to the town of Windsor, the rock and pop acts clearly dominated the jazz artists. In the United States, rock festivals seemed to spring up with a more self-defined musical identity. Preceded by several precursor events in the San Francisco area, the first two rock festivals in the US were staged in northern California on consecutive weekends in the summer of 1967: the KFRC Fantasy Fair & Magic

festivals were called ‘pop festivals’. This also served to distinguish them among the ticket-buying public from other, pre-existing types of music festivals such as jazz and folk festivals. By the end of 1972, the term ‘pop festival’ had virtually disappeared as festival promoters adopted more creative, unique and location-specific names to identify and advertise their events. Today, most music festivals are a big commercial commodity and years of experience are utilized to try to give the festival goer the best experience possible such as the annual three day event in Glastonbury U.K.. The Burapa festival here in the Pattaya area, is not only the big-
