TEQUILA REEF MEXICAN CANTINA So I was invited to dinner at Tequila Reef. This was good news for me, as I only had ever gone before for SOFT tacos. When I arrived the restaurant was full but fortunately my party was already seated. Needless to say, I immediately ordered a frozen margarita. One cannot help but notice premium tequilas on top shelf. Came with a proper lime garnish. Ordering dinner was going to be a little tricky as one guest was vegan and his wife was craving a big rib eye. For the reader I am originally from CA, so I know Mexican food. We started with a 4 item combo appetizer. Basically nachos, taquitos, chicken wings, and quesadillas. Clearly designed for 4 people, but a good way to get

started. I was pleasantly surprised by the taquitos, much larger than normal. I ate 2 of the 4 quesadillas but only remember I needed to eat 2, can’t remember what they tasted like. (lol) For dinner the vegan diner got a mini vegan burrito, and I insisted my vegan friend try a SOFT vegan taco, with rice and beans. We also ordered a rare rib eye steak (I am not shy I taste everyone’s food), and BBQ rib and chicken platter. I added sides of beans rice and tortillas. I eat Mexican like everything is a fajita. That is throw it all in the tortilla. The meat fell off the ribs, tasty. BBQ chicken was large and moist. Excellent for me. The BBQ platter came with chips, but you can ask to replace with beans and rice.

6 THE VOICE OF THE PEOPLE OF PATTAYA

Do that. I mean it is a Mexican place after all. My vegan friend was quite happy with his vegan SOFT taco. His vegan mini burrito came “wet” with sauce. Overall I would call it more CA-Mex than TEXMEX. So, even with a filling meal, I left with my review of Tequila Reef incomplete. I still NEED to try the huge burritos they make, as well as the fajitas. Some day soon. Tel: 038-414-035.

PATTAYA VEGETARIAN FESTIVAL

Over recent weeks you may have noticed the giant yellow signs across the main roads, advertising ‘The Pattaya Vegetarian Festival’. Well, not even the downpour of rain could stop the Gin Jai festivities getting underway on the afternoon of Monday, 8th October until Thursday, 18th October with the official opening of the 10 day event at their annual venue in the Sawang Boriboon Foundation in Naklua. On arrival it was soon apparent how big this occasion is, going through the entrance, the long Chinese Gods adorned thoroughfare was completely lined

with yellow stalls selling all manner of appetising vegetarian food. For anyone that is a permanent vegetarian this festival is ‘a must’ as ideas for meat substitution were in abundance. However, this annual festival is in essence about the cleansing and purification of the body, by not eating meat during the 10 day period, and is traditionally linked to the Chinese-Thai communities not only in Pattaya but around the whole country at this time of year. Everyone attending the festival had been requested to wear white to signify their intention of self purification.

ROTARY DREAM BOX It’s a privilege to be associated with such a worthwhile cause supporting needy kids at the poorest schools in Pattaya. The Pattaya Rotary Club and the Hand 2 Hand Foundation recently launched the Dream Box Appeal. All the children write a letter with their ‘wish’, which goes into the monthly draw. You won’t find requests for iPhones. Designer jeans. Nikes. These kids have different priorities in life. The stories they have to tell can’t fail to move you. The little girl who asked for some pencils so she no longer had to keep borrowing from her friends. An older girl who needed Pampers for her younger brother. The boy who asked for glasses so he could read what teacher was writing on the board. So he would no longer be punished for talking in class because

he had to ask his friend what to do, and by his grandma when he got home, for not writing down the homework that he was supposed to have copied from the board... To be able to fulfil the dreams of children who live in conditions of abject poverty that few Westerners in town would believe possible is a great project and just to see their happy, smiling little faces this morning was reward enough.

UNDER THE ROOF Two nice people of Pattaya Pat and Reza are organizing a charity to raise funds to build a school building and provide other support items including clothes and toys for children living on the border between Thailand and Burma (Myanmar). The goal for the “Under The Roof” charity is to help the jungle tribe villages that are very isolated and far away from any paved roads. These villages are hard to access, rough terrain and dirt roads make it nearly im-

possible to travel during rainy season. These muddy, slippery mountain roads are extremely dangerous and only experienced drivers can manage to reach these villages during this period. Most villages don’t have their own schools and children need to travel for hours just to get to school and back, which puts them at great risk of accidents. More information about the charity on this website: www.undertheroof.com

IRISH MUSICIANS

There may be another six months before Pattaya next celebrates St. Patrick’s Day, but there was an Irish flavour at the School for the Blind recently when three musicians arrived to perform for the students. Failte, the Irish word for Welcome, is a three piece music group based here in Pattaya. Three musicians, five instruments and sixty very excited and grateful blind and visually impaired students. Music is an important part of the school curriculum, and the students at the School for the Blind have a musical marching band, a rock band, a traditional Thai music orchestra and a group that plays the angalung. Once the musicians started to play the students

ISSUE 606  OCTOBER 2018

could not see what instruments were being playing, but they recognised the guitar straight away. There was also a mandolin, as well as an accordion and a penny whistle. But there was one instrument they have never heard before, the spoons. It had to be explained that it really was two regular spoons, and they were very impressed by the sounds it made. The musicians played music and sang songs and the children clapped, cheered and one young boy spent the morning dancing, nothing could stop him. The band gets together each Sunday afternoon at Murphy’s Law bar on Soi LK Metro, just off Soi Buakhao. Four o’clock they start to play and they will transport you back to the Emerald Isle; all the money they collects goes to the Father Ray Foundation, organizers of the Pattaya St. Patrick’s Day Parade.

DIFFICULT LIFE IN PATTAYA

In Pattaya there have been a lot of problems concerning foreigners working together, quite often one party will seek the services or professional advice of the other regarding some form of business. But when the time comes for payment and you ask a fee for the service provided the other party does not want to pay. In order to not pay you they may state that you do not have a work permit, are not authorized to provide that service or even that you are not qualified. This can resort in the other party accusing you of extortion as they believe they do

not have to pay for anything and even officers can get involved. There have been cases where a fee is paid for services provided and an officer has arrested the party being paid on charges of extortion. If you have any problems like this then you should get in touch with a lawyer straight away to submit a civil case in court, or if you are an employee then a case should be submitted at the labour court. This is the way to get the money owed to you back safely and without any risks. It is difficult for a foreigner who plans to start up a

business and stay for the long term in a foreign city not only in Pattaya but around the world, there are many pitfalls and it is difficult to acclimatize to the way business is done there. You have to be careful and always on your guard; for example if somebody wishes to employ you then you should ask them about work permits, salaries or at least an employment contract. If you have these things then it will be difficult for you to be cheated and you will not have to risk facing criminal charges in court. If both sides have employment contracts then both sides are able to be charged, the employer can be charged by employing the employee without a work permit and the employee can be charged with working without a proper work permit. We have handled many cases regarding working without a permit and we have to say that you are still eligible to receive some forms of money

in the court such severance pay, notice in advance and salary. The court will still grant you the above even after considering your work permit situation. As working without a work permit is a criminal charge, if you do not win your case then you will have a criminal record. As such you will lose some benefits in this country such as the opportunity to gain permanent residency or even Thai nationality along with other benefits. LAWYER COMMENT: Never be-

lieve anyone who says that you can work without a work permit as it is a criminal offense and you will be charged. You can protect yourself by getting the right facts from people such as legal professionals like lawyers, qualified officers or professionals who have experience in this matter. We often write articles that always recommend readers to protect themselves when doing any form of business in the Kingdom of Thailand, always be sure to consult with and make good use of

your legal advisor or lawyer as that is their role. This is the first step you can take to ensure that you will not end up being a victim or a defendant in any case. Our firm is willing to answer every mail that you send to us, we love to give proper advice to anyone who needs it. If you have any questions or queries then please feel free to contact us. HOW TO LOWER YOUR CANCER RISK Cancer –its world’s leading cause of death, but about 1 in 3 cases can be prevented, according to the World Health Organization. There is no magic pill to keep you from getting cancer, but you can do some things to improve your odds. - Drop the Weight: - Nearly 70% of Americans are overweight or obese — and those extra pounds drive up your chances of several types of cancer, including in your esophagus, pancreas, colon, kidneys, and thyroid gland. With fewer people smoking, obesity may pass tobacco as the top preventable cause of cancer. If every adult cut their body mass index (a measure of your body fat) by 1%, it might cut the number of new cases by as many as 100,000. - Eat Less Red Meat: - Along with cured meats like bacon, hot dogs, and lunch meat, this has been linked to a higher risk of colon and stomach cancers. The American Institute for Cancer Research recommends no more than 18 ounces of these a week, or a little over a pound. - Wear Sunscreen: -Harmful rays from the sun can give you more than a sunburn. Ultraviolet radiation can cause skin cancer, the most common kind of cancer

in the U.S. And people who spend a lot of time in the sun have a higher risk. Most cases are curable if they’re found and treated early, but they can be life-threatening if they spread to other parts of your body. Sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 or higher can help protect you. - Don’t Count on Supplements: - A diet rich in vegetables, fruits, and whole grains is a better bet than nutritional supplements to lower your risk of cancer. Supplements don’t give you the same benefits as whole foods, and they can throw off the balance of other nutrients in your body. Supplements may help with certain conditions, but don’t bet on them to prevent cancer - Cut Down on Sugar: - Foods or drinks with a lot of sugar tend to have more calories per ounce. If you have them often, you’re more likely to take in more calories than you burn in a day. That can make you gain weight — and possibly increase your risk of cancer. You don’t have to skip the sugar entirely, but keep an eye out for things with added sweeteners. - Get Vaccinated for HPV: Human papilloma virus (HPV) is often passed from person to person through sex. It can live in your body for years and you might not

20 THE VOICE OF THE PEOPLE OF PATTAYA

even notice. It’s the cause of nearly all cervical cancers in women and also can cause cancer of the vagina, penis, anus, mouth, and throat. Girls can get the vaccine between the ages of 9 and 26, and boys from 9 to 21.Using condoms can also lower your chances of getting HPV. - Get off the Couch: -People who exercise are less likely to get cancer of the colon, breast, or uterus. When you’re up and moving around, your body uses more energy, digests food faster, and prevents a buildup of some hormones that are linked to cancer. Being active also can help head off other health problems like heart disease or diabetes. - Stub out That Butt: - Do you smoke? It causes various kinds of cancer, as well as heart and lung disease. Though the share of Americans who light up regularly has dropped from more than 40% in the 1960s to about 15%, tobacco is still the No. 1 cause of preventable death in the U.S. - Ease off the Sauce: -You know which one we mean. Drinking too much alcohol can raise your risk of cancers of the digestive system — your stomach, liver, and colon, among others — as well as breast and throat cancer. It can hurt tissues in your body, damage your liver, and mix with other chemicals to harm your cells. Men shouldn’t have more than two drinks a day, and women should limit it to one. - Get a Hepatitis B Shot: People who have the hepatitis B virus are 100 times more likely to get liver cancer, one of the fastest-growing kinds. And those who have chronic liver problems, several sex partners, or share needles

to use drugs have a high risk of getting hepatitis B, along with people who work with human blood. But a vaccine can prevent infection. Talk with your doctor about it if you think you’re at risk. - Get Screened: -The sooner the warning signs of cancer are spotted, the better your odds of recovery. A variety of tests can check for different types, like breast, colon, prostate, or skin. Ask your doctor which of these screenings you should get, and when. - Role of Alternative Therapies to Cure Cancer: -An ongoing series highlighting alternative therapies, adapted from The Complete Guide to Complementary Therapies in Cancer Care by Barrie R. Cassileth, MS, PhD, Chief, Integrative Medicine Service, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Complementary therapies are noninvasive, non-pharmacologic adjuncts to mainstream treatment. They improve patients’ strength and control of the physical and emotional symptoms associated with cancer and other illnesses. They provide self-help guidance to enhance body and soul at times when one feels vulnerable and life seems out of control. Complementary therapies are used as adjuncts to mainstream care of cancer and other illnesses, not as substitutes. They improve physical and emotional function and manage stress and symptoms of aging, regardless of health status. Complementary therapies are rational, evidence-based practices delivered or taught by trained practitioners. They include mindbody practices such as meditation, Acupressure, Magnetic therapies; nutritional counseling; physical fitness, including programs such as

CHINA ACCUSES US OF BEING ‘TRADE BULLY’ AS FRESH TARIFFS KICK IN Beijing — The US and China imposed fresh tariffs on each other’s goods on Monday as the

world’s biggest economies showed no signs of backing down from an increasingly bitter trade dispute that is expected to knock global economic growth. Soon after the new duties went into effect, China accused the US of engaging in “trade bullyism” and said it was intimidating other countries to submit to its will, the Xinhua news agency said, reiterating China’s willingness to fight if necessary. But Beijing also said it was willing to restart trade negotiations with the US if the talks are “based on mutual respect and equality”, Xinhua said, citing a white paper on the dispute published by China’s State Council. US tariffs on $200bn worth of Chinese goods and retaliatory tariffs by Beijing on $60bn worth of US products took effect at midday Asian time, though the initial level of the duties was not as high as earlier feared. Stocks on Wall Street opened lower. Boeing, the biggest US exporter to China, dropped 1% and Caterpillar 0.5%, leading the losers on the Dow Jones Industrial Average. “One of the bigger risks with these tariffs going into effect is that the US may be pushed out of the Chi-

nese market and it is a growing market,” said Scott Brown, chief economist at Raymond James in

Florida. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 56.31 points, or 0.21%, to 26,687.19, the S&P 500 lost 7.51 points, or 0.26%, to 2,922.16 and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 45.88 points, or 0.57%, to 7,941.08. Moody’s said additional US tariffs on Chinese imports are negative for various sectors in both countries and could spread beyond targeted sectors, adding that tariffs are credit negative for US furniture and home goods retailers, with more than half their imports coming from China in 2017. The US will levy tariffs of 10% initially, rising to 25% at the end of 2018. Beijing has imposed rates of 5%-10% and warned it would respond to any rise in US tariffs on Chinese products accordingly. The two sides had already slapped tariffs on $50bn worth of each other’s goods. For US consumers, the new duties could translate into higher prices for Chinese products ranging from vacuum cleaners to technology gear, while US goods targeted by Beijing include liquefied natural gas and certain types of aircraft. President Donald Trump is pressing China to reduce its huge bi-

Pacific are already reporting disruptions to their operations and are reviewing investment plans. The trade tensions have also cast a pall over broader relations between Beijing and Washington.

India Pledges Action as Markets Rocked by Default Worries Indian authorities vowed to support financial markets rocked by growing concerns of defaults by shadow banks. The government will provide adequate liquidity to mutual funds and non-bank financial companies, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said on Monday. His tweet followed a rare joint weekend statement from the central bank and capital markets regulator assuring investors they were monitoring the situation and would take necessary steps. Analysts are warning that India’s shadow banking sector could face a cash crunch after key lender Infrastructure Leasing & Financial Services Ltd. missed debt payments and rattled investors Friday. Policy makers are already battling with surging bad loans at banks, a plunging currency and volatile stocks as foreign investors pull money from emerging markets.

Read: Default Rattles Investors in Asia’s Best-Performing Stock Market Some analysts expect the Reserve Bank of India to conduct more open market bond purchases to

add liquidity to the market and calm investors, while others see a special refinance window for non-banking finance companies and mutual funds. “It is more of calming nerves in the financial markets that things won’t go into a spiral,” said Kuldeepsinh Jagtap, executive vice president at ICICI Securities Primary Dealership. “For example, if tighter rupee liquidity leads to disruption in money market rates, the RBI might provide adequate liquidity ensuring smooth functioning of markets.”

Troubles

Turmoil in India’s non-bank finance companies has deepened in the past few weeks, with troubled lender IL&FS disclosing further missed debt payments on Friday. The company, which has been categorized as a “systemically important” non-banking financial firm by the RBI has total debt of $12.6 billion. Of that, 61 percent are in the form of loans from financial institutions, indicating its woes could spread to other shadow banks in Asia’s third-largest economy. Already a few mutual funds have been selling short term debt instruments issued by non-bank fi-

nance companies including those funding India’s housing sector. That selloff is being partially blamed for Friday’s crash in India’s stock market which the capital market regulator is now

reviewing. The Securities and Exchange Board of India is looking into whether brokers and investors colluded during the sharp selloff and subsequent recovery in financial shares, people with knowledge of the matter said. The slide even prompted the country’s largest commercial bank, the State Bank of India, to say that the default by IL&FS was not India’s Lehman moment. The market extended losses on Monday, with the benchmark equity index closing 1.5 percent lower in Mumbai. Read: Defaulter IL&FS Is Said to Plan $4.2 Billion of Asset Sales “The RBI will wait to gauge the situation but most likely option in the current environment is to inject additional liquidity into the system,” said Mahendra Jajoo, head of fixed income at Mirae Asset Global Investment in Mumbai. “They can also give additional line of credit to non-bank finance companies and to the mutual funds,” he said.

Wall Street’s days of splendid isolation are numbered

Thanks in large part to Trump’s stimulatory fiscal policies, Wall Street is operating in splendid isolation from the rest of the world. The benchmark S&P 500 sharemarket measure is up 10 per cent this year – double its nearest rival, Japan’s Nikkei. European stocks have lost money, as have British equities. In US dollar terms, these major rival bourses are off 4 per cent and 6 per cent, respectively. Aussie stocks are about 2 per cent higher, but from the perspective of American money managers – who comprise a big chunk of the capital invested globally – the ASX is down 5 per cent. Hong Kong equities have lost them 8 per cent.

lateral trade surplus and make sweeping changes to its policies on trade, technology transfers and high-tech industrial subsidies. Beijing has denied that US firms are forced to transfer technology and sees Washington’s demands on rolling back its industrial policies as an attempt to contain China’s economic rise. The US administration “has brazenly p r e a c h e d unilateralism, protectionism and economic hegemony, making false accusations against many countries and regions, particularly China, intimidating other countries through economic measures such as imposing tariffs,” Xinhua quoted the State Council’s white paper as saying. Several rounds of Sino-US trade talks in recent months have yielded no major breakthroughs and attempts at arranging another meeting have fallen through. A senior White House official said last week the US will continue to engage China, but added there was no date for further talks. China, which has accused Washington of being insincere in the negotiations, has decided not to send vice-premier Liu He to Washington this week, The Wall Street Journal reported late last week. News of Beijing’s decision to skip the talks pushed China’s yuan currency down 0.3% on Monday in offshore trade, reinforcing investors’ fears that both sides are digging in for a long fight. Mainland China markets were closed for a holiday. Economists warn that a protracted dispute will eventually stunt growth across the globe. Companies on both sides of the

PATTAYA UNITED – REASONABLY SAFE 3-1 win away at Ubon UMT FC and then another 3-1 victory at home over Police Tero FC. A visit to Sukhothai FC got the Dolphins a 4-0 thrashing but by then, they had established a cushion of points meaning that they would stay in 7th place. Finally, the last home match of September saw Utd. lose a lead twice in the home game against a very tetchy Ratchaburi FC side to gain only one point in a 2-2 draw that Pattaya should have won. So, at the time of going to press and with an away game at runaway league leaders Buriram to come on the 29th of September, Pattaya Utd are not serious rel-

So, with three games remaining, the Dolphins are 7th in the Thai Premier Football League table on 45 points. Mathematically, if results go against them and they do not gain any more points, relegation is still possible, but that scenario is highly unlikely. Results in September were mixed starting with a 1-0 defeat at home by Nakhon Ratchasima FC after a disasterous first minute opportunist goal struck over the Pattaya goalkeepers head from the halfway line. Schoolboy error! That was followed by a superb

BUNKER BOYS Monday, September 3rd Khao Kheow Country Club A and B.,1st Michael Brett (15) 36 points. 2nd Jimmy Carr (15) 36 points. 3rd Peter Allen (29) 35 points Near pins Stuart Mann, Paul Lanzetta, Geoff Parker, Alan Sullivan. A new golfing month got underway at the Khao Kheow Country Club where another good low season field of twelve took part. The course was in its usual good condition and the weather was perfect for golf, no wind made a pleasant change after weeks of relatively strong winds. An uncrowded course made for play at a good pace with no holdups. This may have had an effect on scoring which was for the most part of a high standard and also very even. Two players finished on thirty-six points with Michael Brett edging out Jimmy Carr on countback. Four players returned a score of thirty-five points with the chocolates going to Peter Allen with a superior back nine of twenty points, missing out were Les Hall, Geoff Parker, and Paul Lanzetta. Near pins went to Paul Lanzetta, Stuart Mann, Geoff Parker, and Alan Sullivan. Another of Jimmy Carr’s many suggestions is being trialed this month where the winner of golfer of the month will be decided by a players six best stableford scores and not by their accumulated points on the daily winner’s list, should make for an interesting comparison at the end of the month as both sets of numbers will be tabulated. Wednesday, September 5th 1st Neil Carter (11) 32 points

2nd Jimmy Carr (15) 27 points 3rd Les Cobban (9) 27 points Near pins Geoff Parker, Michael Brett, Peter Allen X 2. As was the case last time we played Royal Lakeside the weather looked like it might play a role in today’s play as heavy skies hung overhead and the threat of a downpour looked likely, however, the weather gods smiled on us once again as the skies turned to blue and a pleasant days golf was enjoyed by most. Even the wind that blows hard at this venue was very light today. Heavy overnight rain left the course sodden, with casual water in places so the pick clean and place rule was applied. The greens were unaffected by the rain and were a joy to putt on for those that can putt, enough said. Every now and then it seems that everyone plays poorly at the same time as was the case today with very low scores returned. The only one to show any form was Neil Carter who returned refreshed from his sojourn in his native Canada to post a modest winning score of thirty-three points. Second place went to Jimmy Carr with only twenty-seven points, whilst third was taken by Les Cobban. Near pins went to Geoff Parker and Michael Brett whilst Peter Allen took two once again with the driver off the tee. One can only hope this collective slump in form will be rectified on our next outing. Friday, September 7th Pattavia 1st Geoff Cox (18) 36 points 2nd Takeshi Hakozaki (12) 35 points 3rd Michael Bret (15) 35 points Near pins Geoff Parker, Michael

Brett, and Jimmy Carr. A very hot sunny day greeted the eleven golfers from the Bunker Boys who played the last game of the week. The course was in fine condition except for the greens which were slower than normal and quite bumpy making putting more difficult than normal. The wind which blew during the front nine abated on the back nine which was the signal for the fruit flies to make their appearance, even a liberal spray of citronella was not enough to deter them. The course was empty so a quick game ensued finished in three and a half hours. It’s pleasing to report a much-improved effort from everybody today with scoring more akin to what we would expect. Today’s winner was Geoff Cox with thirty-six points, Geoff is playing consistently good golf lately so it seems just a matter of time before he sees a cut in his handicap. Second place went to Takeshi Hakozaki a stroke back whilst Michael Brett blew his chance to win missing a birdie putt on the last, even a parr would have been enough, alas a bogey was the result. Near pins went to Geoff Parker, as usual, Michael Brett and two to Jimmy Carr.

number which as luck would have it did win a prize, no prizes for guessing what his favorite number was. Prior to the presentation of prizes at the Links Bar, a smorgasbord of fine food was available which was quickly demolished by some hungry golfers. Wednesday, September 12th Pattaya Country Club 1st Takeshi Hakozaki (12) 39 points 2nd Nial Glover (19) 38 points 3rd Neil Carter (11) 33 points Near Pins Jimmy Carr, Neil Carter, and Steve Durey X 2 Despite officially being in monsoon season for some time its only now that we are experiencing the real thing. Regular heavy overnight rain is making courses very wet with the requirement for pick, clean, and place becoming the norm. Today there was occasionally the requirement to move away from casual water to achieve a dry stance. Heavy overcast skies are normal also but when the sun does break through the humidity skyrockets. All of these conditions were in play today, however, had no ill effects on Takeshi Hakozaki who stormed home to take first place with a superb thirty-nine points. His round included a couple

of easy birdies and a few missed opportunities to break forty. Nial Glover had his best round for some time and would have expected to win with a very good thirty-eight points, no doubt all eyes will now be upon him as his score indicates his handicap may be a bit generous. The rest of the field were way back with Neil Carter taking third on thirty-three points. Near pins went to Jimmy Carr, Neil Carter, and Steve Durey who despite having a Barry Crocker of a round managed to snare two Friday, September 14th Mountain Shadow 1st Michael Brett (14) 39 points 2nd Jimmy Carr (15) 37 points 3rd Neil Carter (11) 34 points Near pins Mashi Kaneta, Trevor Priestley, Geoff Parker, and Neil Carter. Once again the weather gods smiled upon us with rain overnight and into the morning but fine again for golf, sooner or later I feel a drenching coming on. The Mountain Shadow course was in good condition despite rain nevertheless the pick, clean and place rule applied. A few of the greens were a bit substandard particularly the sixteenth where a bit of repair

work was augmented by the course dogs. The wind was very light so conditions were on the hot humid side. Scoring was above average today on what is normally considered a difficult course on which to accumulate a good score. Neil Carter took third place with thirty-four points. Jimmy Carr returned a card of thirty-seven which most days would be enough to win, alas it was only good enough for second. The winner on the day was Michael Brett who despite an average front nine of sixteen picked up his game on the back with twenty-three points to return a total of thirty-nine points. Near pins went to Trevor Priestley, Mashi Kaneta, Geoff Parker, and Neil Carter. Mashi Kaneta made a welcome return to the Bunker Boys for a game prior to next weeks visit to Hua Hin with a combined Tropical/Bunker Boys group visiting this very desirable golfing destination for four rounds at Majestic Creek, Banyan, Black Mountain and Springfield. Winner at Pattaya Country Club Takeshi Hakozaki.

Winner at Pattavia Geoff Cox. Monday, September 10th Laem Chabang B and C A group of eight Bunker Boys joined about one hundred and twenty other golfers for a PSC sponsored event at the Laem Chabang course. As you would expect with this number of golfers play was slow despite a reminder on each scorecard to be mindful of the speed of play. With the benefit of hindsight, the pick clean and place rule should have been implemented from the outset as the course was very wet, however by the time it became evident it was already too late. Despite having some of our best players in the field the Bunker Boys didn’t cover themselves in glory with only Geoff Parker and Les Cobban taking a near pin each. Our best score was courtesy of Les with thirty-five points followed by Michael Brett on thirty-three and Jimmy Carr on thirty-two. Les Cobban also managed to snare a lucky door prize, whilst Stuart Brown lamented the fact that he wasn’t able to choose his favorite

Greenwood With several of the regulars off to Hua Hin and a few others out of Country, it was a small but eager group meeting at BJ Holiday Lodge for our monthly visit to Greenwood. It is an easy drive now and arriving under cloudy but dry skies all were anxious to test the challenges of the “A” & “C” nines once again. Word is that the “B” nine will reopen in November. With the reduced number of players, all within a few strokes on Handicap Index it was decided to just play off HI this day instead of CH as the group usually does. So off C-1 we went playing “Ball in

TROPICAL GOLF GROUP Friday, September 14, Emerald – St Pierrel Prevails at “Soggy” Emerald In early August we visited Emerald and had two rain delays in the first four holes before being able to make our way around the course under cloudy but dry conditions. Now in mid September and after a rainy night, what would this trip to Emerald bring? Gathered at BJ’s for breakfast and coffee we checked the weather radar and called the course. Yes there was light rain and golfers were waiting in the clubhouse for a break in the drizzle before heading out and the radar showed the possibility of a drying period. Based on this info the

group decided it was worth at least a drive to the course to check conditions before making the final “Go/NoGo” call. Arriving, after negotiating the 36 and the construction detours, there was still a light drizzle but players were on the 1st Tee. When all arrived and after another check of the radar it was decided to “GO”. So pay up the daily fees, 1350 “AllIn” a good deal, and our three groups hit the 1st hole with vigor playing “Ball in Hand” through the green. With drizzly conditions, soggy ground under foot, some puddles in bunkers, and damp slower greens, how would the group do. Tuesday September 18, Greenwood – St Carmody Best on the Day at

Tuesday 11th September we went to Plutaluang, where we the North & West course played. We saw Andy Nesbitt this week back after several months. This week we had only a small group, but we had a good competition. In the morning the weather didn’t look good, but later we had a perfect day with clouds, sun and wind. The course was in pretty good condition after all the rain in the night before. Andy Nesbitt had some problems on the front nine, but on the back

The winner on the day and the only player to play to his handicap with 36 points was John Pierrel (c/h 12). A great round in difficult conditions! John has been very steady of late so the group headed for a week of golf in Hua Hin better beware. Following John on the podium was Bob Britton (13), 33 pts, Dick Warberg (23), 31 pts, and Don Carmody (28), 30 pts. Congratulations to all for sticking with it and completing the round. SIAM COUNTRY RESORT Pratt unbeatable at Khao Kheow Tuesday 4th September we went to Khao Kheow. We played the A & B course. The course was as always in good condition, but not easy to play. We had a nice sunny day with a breeze. We always like to play here and had a nice day. Jonathan Pratt showed his good form today with very good driving. He won with 39 stable ford points. Owen Walkley had also a good day and became second with 38 stable ford points. Third was Patrick Devereux with 36 stable ford points.

Pleasant Valley was our venue for Thursday 13th September. We played today a 5-ball. After a night with heavy rain, we were afraid to find a very wet course. But to our relief the course was not wetter than normal. And we had a nice sunny day again. It was an exciting round without top scores. It was again Andy, who played a strong back nine. GROWLING SWAN KING NAGA 13th of September 2018. STABLEFORD. Bernie Puts the (Mc)Cart Before the Horse. Nineteen golfers departed the Growling Swan a little earlier than the 8.30 departure time that was scheduled, surprisingly all golfers were saddled up and ready to go! King Naga GC was our destination (the old Rayong CC) This course has become quite popular and let’s not kid ourselves here it’s the price firstly and then little OB and not that much water coming into play, and that adds to the attraction! Pattaya had had plenty of rain over the last couple of days and one was certain whether or not carts would be allowed on course. To make matters worse the approach road to the course had plenty of water on it and the creek that we cross could have been used in the Olympics for the kayak time trials. Anyway as we headed to the first tee we were told that

LINKS GOLF SOCIETY Marshall Calls the Shots at Burapha The Pattaya Links Golf Society visited nearby Burapha on Wednesday, 19th September to play a stableford competition on the C and D nines. Though not the combination of choice for many of the field - A and B being the preferred option - the course was in reasonably good condition. Fairways were soft and the rough, which is a problem on the best of days, has now thickened with the recent wet weather. Throw into the mix the usual hazards and long par fours and there is a golf course waiting to be challenged. A field of twenty played in one flight. With one exception scores were moderate with Pete Seil making fourth place with 35 points, shunted out of third by Maurice

carts are allowed on course. Amazing! The course was in good nick, fairways had been mowed (before the rains came), there was no sign of the coring of the greens that we experienced the last time we played. We played from the Yellow tees and with the weather the way it was it made for a pleasant day for golf. We had an incident that occurred on about the 15th hole that is worthy of a mention, as we were teeing off there was an unusual noise coming from off the course, Bernie and I thought it was a Scrub Turkey. Well as it turned out it was a small dog that had fallen into a creek and was having trouble getting out, and with the water levels rising the dog was finding this even more difficult. I ripped my shirt off to dive in and save the dog but Stuart Rifkin with no regard for his personal safety pushed me to one side and dived in. Within moments he had the dog by the scruff of

the neck as a huge salt water croc lunged at Casa. Rifkin was barely able to get his feet and get out unscathed, if not for the efforts of his playing partners god only knows how this would have ended up. One of the most selfless efforts/acts that one has ever witnessed! Well back to the golf; nineteen players gave us the one flight only and we did have all the novelties in play. It was Bernie McCart that got thru the crocodile attack on Casa to take the prize in today’s event. Having played with Bernie, on several occasions, today was by far the best that I had seen Bernie play, 43 pts was what he finished with. Second past the post was in a bit of form at present Phil Moore with Keith Buchanan filling third place. Fourth & fifth placing’s had to go the count back with Glenn Henriksen getting the nod over Gordon Clegg. RESULTS FOR MOUNTAIN SHADOW 1ST – Bernie McCart (33) 43 points 2ND – Phil Moore (17) 41 points 3RD – Keith Buchanan (14) 39 points 4th – Glenn Henriksen (11) 37 points 5th – Gordon Clegg (24) 37 points Nearest The Pin. 5TH – Denis Steele. 7TH – Martin Kempton. 12TH – Keith Buchanan. 16TH – Glenn Henriksen. PATTAVIA – MONDAY 17TH September. STABLEFORD. “DAVE NEAL” nails it! Two buses and a couple of cars ferried today’s golfers to this lovely course. The trip itself was uneventful other than dodging the craters on the road leading from the highway to the course proper. Plenty of overnight rain left punters worried that carts would not be allowed on the course but despite a heavy ground, they were. Thus playing conditions were in our favor! as a result. A field of twenty-six golfers made it to the tee and all got away in good time. The lack of any breeze and run made the course play long and the extreme heat on a very still day caught many golfers out and their rounds wilted early. SANDY STUVIK EYES ANOTHER POLE POSITION IN SHANGHAI

After a fourth round filled with ups and downs at the mountainous Fuji Speedway, the Thai driver Sandy Stuvik is looking forward to the next round of the Blancpain GT Series Asia Championship which will be held on the 22nd to 23rd of September at the Shanghai F1 Circuit. Last year Sandy set the Pole Position time in the Lamborghini Huracan GT3, and the Thai driver is looking to repeat that feat this year in the Porsche 911 GT3 R. Furthermore, as the season is starting to move into the colder months, both Craft

Sandy will once again be reuniting his partnership with Australian driver Shae Davies. “The goal for the Shanghai round will be to get as many points as we can in both the races, and try to improve our overall standing in the championship”, Sandy says. “The Shanghai circuit is one that I have many good memories from, since I first drove there in 2010 in Asian Formula Renault.

I’ve had some good races there so it is a circuit I always look forward to on the calendar. I believe we can be competitive here and I’ve also got a hopeful eye on the weather, as I think it may just boost our chances.” Sandy explains. VIRTUAL BANDS

The backing track is very controversial amongst purist musicians. Some say it’s cheating and only a full band of proper players will suffice to keep them happy. However, when members of a band turn up late or even not turn up at all, get drunk, call in sick, fall out with the others, play badly, not learn the songs correctly, act unprofessionally, etc. etc. …..and above all, need paying, then the humble backing track comes into its’ own as, by far, the best option. In my vast experience of playing all types of shows internationally, I came to the conclusion many years ago that the only person I can always trust to turn up, play properly and do exactly what I require for a top pro performance…. was me. Adding others to my line up who were conscientious with good performing abilities plus a great attitude for doing what the perfor-

mance required and being able to work well in a team, has always been a bonus. I’ve always been a big fan of playing in an ‘all live’ band with great

players and have done tours and gigs with a variety of brilliant musicians in my long career, treasuring many moments of excellence when it all comes together in perfect harmony. Being a realist, this cannot always be achieved, mostly with budget restraints and decent musician availability. Therefore for the past 20 years or so, I’ve been producing my own tailor made backing tracks to suit myself playing either solo or as an entertaining band. I say ‘entertaining’ as I was the leader

of a party band for many years which had no bass player or drummer (‘shame on you’ I hear – from bass players and drummers) but, I would augment my line up with female singer/dancers, percussionist/guitarist/singer and another keyboard/sax player. Combinations of this line up could suit whatever show I was booked for and we always entertained, becoming one of the most popular pop party bands in the south of England. Never did I have someone come up to me asking where the drummer or bass player was (they were too busy watching the girls!). I produced my own tailor made tracks with bass, drums, percussion and the occasional fill in keyboard so that I could sing and play guitar over. Vocalists have been able to perform on their own for a long time now using ‘karaoke’ style backing. The problem with this is that it is exactly that…controlled karaoke. For a solo performer, it works fine as the audience can focus on the vocal and performing talents of the vocalist. Plus the booker saves money. The trick though, is to not sound too mechanical with an awful sounding drum machine and low quality backing tracks sounding too much like the original record on the radio. This is why I (and I know of others who have successfully achieved a good balance) produced my own live tracks with a live feel, fun intros and endings (no fades please) plus an uncluttered clear bed of music enabling the

ISSUE 606  OCTOBER 2018

totally live stuff to flourish on the top. A good ‘mix’ is vital. The big positives are that the ‘backing track’ band is never late, has perfect pitch and tempo too. However, if you, the musician or vocalist, fails to play the correct arrangement, your virtual band cannot adjust to suit you. There are some “secrets” to using backing tracks live that can determine whether your audience fills the dance floor or not. The most obvious is choice and sequencing of material, playing what your audience wants to hear as opposed to your own selfish playlist. One of the most important things to do is make the backing track sound ‘live’. That means the level of compression / limiting of the backing tracks should be at a minimum.

ertoire for this week. Whatever road you go down as a performing musician…mot importantly, have fun.

So use raw, uncompressed tracks for the backing that have a full dynamic range, same as the live performers. Unless you are U2, bands inevitably break up or change personnel. By tailoring your virtual band around you, you can only break up with yourself. I’m off now to have an argument with Barry Upton about musical differences which will resolve its self when I’ve decided (after a reasonable debate with myself) what new tunes to add to my rep-

40 THE VOICE OF THE PEOPLE OF PATTAYA

Day is celebrated on October 26 and relates to political developments after WW II. After the end of the War, Austria was occupied by the four Allied forces (Soviet Union, United States, Great Britain, and France), who divided the country into four zones. The capital Vienna was also divided in four, with the historic central district being jointly administered by the “Allied Control Council”. Although the Austrian parliament was democratically elected, every legislative regulation or political action of the government at first required consent by the Allied

Control Council and later on could still be vetoed by it. The negotiations over a State Treaty putting an end to the occupation could finally be concluded in the spring of 1955: the Austrian State Treaty was signed on May 15, 1955, in Vienna’s Schloss Belvedere and entered into force on July 27, 1955. On October 26, 1955, the Austrian Parliament passed the constitutional law on permanent neutrality, which has been celebrated as the Austrian National day since 1965.
