ello and welcome to Australian Tyre Dealer. International tyre company Zenises enters the Australian market in 2016, bringing along its Z range of tyres. Zenises says it has ambitious plans to develop its Z brand. Now counting over 70 individual dimensions in high performance passenger and SUV fitments (including 17 new sizes in run-flat technology), the company says the Z tyre offers the latest UHP tyre dimensions with superb quality and at a price to suit all drivers. Z tyres have already been tested against leading competitors at European proving grounds with results that lead the company to be fully confident in the tyres performance capabilities. In other news, Tyre Stewardship Australia (TSA) continues to attract major tyre industry heavyweights to join its push to tackle the challenge presented by the 51 million end-of-life tyres generated each year. Bob Jane T-Marts and Kumho Tyre have joined the TSA Product Stewardship Scheme. Bob Jane T-Marts, with 136 stores around the country, joins Tyrepower, Beaurepaires, Bridgestone Service Centres and Bridgestone Select stores, K Mart Tyre & Auto Service, Goodyear Auto Centres, Tyres & More, TyrePlus and Continental retail outlets in achieving TSA Accreditation. Kumho Tyre, one of the world’s leading tyre brands, has also joined TSA, joining fellow global brands Continental, Bridgestone, Goodyear Dunlop, Michelin, Pirelli, Toyo and Yokohama. INDUSTRY NEWS

Survey highlights motorists lack of tyre safety knowledge A new survey from consumer research and ratings company Canstar Blue has unveiled some worrying information concerning Australian motorists’ lack of tyre safety awareness. Of 1,587 motorists questioned, 42% were unaware of the legal tread depth of car tyres, while 29% admitted to driving on tyres they suspected were unroadworthy. And the results were even more alarming for young drivers, with 58% of 18-29 year-olds in the dark over legal standards and 39% confessing to taking risks on old tyres. “It’s terrifying to think that so many motorists are driving around on potentially dangerous tyres,” said Megan Doyle, Head of Canstar Blue. “Driving on worn, or bald, tyres can be incredibly dangerous – for you and other road-users. Not only will you have less control of your vehicle, especially in wet conditions, but you’re also at greater risk of suffering a puncture. “Motorists should regularly check their tyres, and if the tread has been worn down to the tyre wear indicators, or there is less than 1.5 milimeters of tread across the entire face of the tyre, then it is illegal and dangerous, and should be replaced as soon as possible. “Unfortunately though, buying new tyres is not high on the priority list for some motorists, which is incredible when you consider your tyres are the only thing separating you and your vehicle from the road. Tyres are not one of those things you should skimp on, but clearly that is the case for some people.” The survey, conducted in December 2015, found that 48%

of motorists delay buying new tyres for as long as possible, while 25% tend to buy the cheapest tyres available. Drivers aged 18-29 were found to be most likely, with 56% holding off buying new tyres and 38% opting for the cheapest tyres. 67% of female drivers aged 18-29 were unaware of the legal tread depth, while males in their 30s (45%) were most likely to admit driving on potentially unsafe tyres. Mrs Doyle said that investing in a decent set of tyres was a price worth paying. “Quality tyres don’t come cheap, but will probably end up lasting longer than cheap ones, and could therefore work out at better value in the long-run. Your first and last thoughts when buying tyres should always be about safety. There are lots of different car tyres available, so it can be easy to take your eye off the ball. Seek expert opinion and just buy the tyres that are the safest option for your vehicle. “These results should be a

wakeup call to those motorists who put thoughts of their car tyres to the back of their mind,” added Mrs Doyle. “Yes, tyres can be expensive, but you can’t put a price on safety. Go and talk to the experts and don’t put yourself, and others, at unnecessary risk.” Respondents to the survey also rated the car tyres they most recently bought - rating them on factors including stopping ability, handling, tyre life and value for money. They also rated the retailer they bought the tyres from, taking into consideration factors such as customer service and the quality of tyres stocked. For the second year in a row, Michelin scored five stars across most variables, including overall customer satisfaction. Three tyre retailers earned the maximum overall rating – Bob Jane T-Marts, Bridgestone and Tyrepower – with the latter scoring five stars for the third year in a row. www.canstarblue.com.au 3

One year on - Zenises makes a difference... Zenises is celebrating its first year of rewarding, collaborative growth and contribution in global markets and is now heading “down under” with the establishment of an office in Sydney… WHO IS ZENISES? Zenises is a multinational customerfocused company headquartered in the United Kingdom, with a network of six further offices in the UAE, South Africa (Durban and Cape Town), Germany, Italy and Spain. As an international distribution and service company, Zenises has extensive experience and passion for the global tyre business. In fact, between them, the senior management team has almost 200 years of experience working with tyres! Mr. Harjeev Kandhari is the founder and CEO of Zenises. Having previously built up one of the most successful brand names in the premium economy tyre category, this third-generation tyre entrepreneur has now formed Zenises to establish distinctive new ways of supporting business in the tyre industry. Mr Kandhari puts forward the Zenises position and philosophy in this way: “We aim to be the leading international tyre distributor with a focus on technical advances, aesthetic design and customer contact – a balance of precision, safety, service and style. Above all, our partners’ interests 4

come first. Without this approach then what’s the point of being in business? We feel times are changing and we want to be at the forefront working closely with our partners. “We believe that by assisting more people more often, they become more successful in their own businesses and thus our own success will naturally follow.” Zenises currently distributes a range of brands throughout various parts of Europe, including Westlake, Kapsen, Triangle, iLink, T, and of course, their Z Tyre.

AND WHAT ABOUT Z TYRE? Since inception, one of the company’s prominent development objectives has been the introduction of the high performance Z Tyre, which aims to set a new standard for value and excellence. Zenises has ambitious plans to develop this unique and proprietary Z brand. Now counting over 70 individual dimensions in high performance passenger and SUV fitments (including 17 new sizes in run-flat technology), Z tyre aims to be a ‘fast market follower’ offering the latest UHP tyre dimensions with superb quality but at a price

to suit all drivers. The Z tyre slogan itself declares intent: “We believe that the luxury of a high performance tyre is not a question of price.” Z tyres have already been tested against leading competitors at European proving grounds with results that lead the company to be fully confident in the tyres performance capabilities.

LOOKING FORWARD TO A BRIGHT FUTURE What do the next few months and years hold for Zenises and the tyre industry? Zenises believe that whilst being potentially challenging (as is often the custom in our tyre industry), the future is bright when faced with a collaboratively-based mindset. This is why the needs of our partners always come first, because without this the chances of a business succeeding are diminished. Ultimately, a life of giving service is, in essence, the most fulfilling and rewarding way forward. To learn more about Zenises and Z Tyre please go to www.zenises.com and www.ztyre.com respectively. Kumho Tyre, one of the world’s leading tyre brands, has also joined TSA, furthering the Association’s reach with the industry and joining fellow global brands Continental, Bridgestone, Goodyear Dunlop,

Michelin, Pirelli, Toyo and Yokohama. “Kumho joins at a very exciting time for TSA. We are making significant progress on all three of our key objectives, being to institute an accredited Tyre Product Stewardship Scheme, undertake industry and consumer education and help fund R&D into opportunities to turn an environmental management task into new industries and jobs,” said Matt Genever, TSA CEO. “Kumho is a very welcome addition to our comprehensive line-up of leadings brands and now, with our reach into the tyre retail sector, consumers can be assured that there will be a TSA-accredited tyre store, offering a TSA member tyre brand, near them.” “We at Kumho Tyre have been a global leader in working to realise sustainable development within the tyre industry and also in fulfilling our social responsibilities,” said Mr Harry Cho, Kumho Tyre Australia Managing Director. “We are therefore very pleased to join in with the great work of TSA to address environmental issues within the local industry and thereby making a significant contribution to society.” Tyre Stewardship Australia is a Federal and State Government supported industry cooperative initiative to address the challenge of end-of-life tyres. Industry members combine their efforts to deliver, through TSA, an accreditation scheme, consumer and industry education, and funding for research and development into future commercial uses for recycled tyres. Launched in 2014, the TSA has grown rapidly and now includes most of the major players in the tyre importing and retail industry. In addition to importers, retailers and collectors/ recyclers, TSA has also begun to accredit large fleets, including Australia Post and the Department of Defence. Such fleets are committed to doing business with TSA accredited suppliers. More than 1,000 tyre retail outlets are TSA Accredited, as are end-oflife tyre collectors and recyclers representing over 70% of the market. TSA also has recently allocated over $1.5 million in research and development funds for projects to increase the use of tyre-derived material.

Federal Environment Minister congratulates TSA

F

ederal Environment Minister, The Hon. Greg Hunt MP, was on hand in his home electorate of Flinders, on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula, as part of the launch of a national cooperative research project targeting greater use of rubberised road products, including asphalt and spray seal. As part of an allocation of over $1.5 million in research and development funds, Tyre Stewardship Australia (TSA) is partnering with the Australian Road Research Board (ARRB), Sustainability Victoria, VicRoads, and the Queensland Departments of Transport & Main Roads and Environment & Heritage Protection, to research particular market barriers and to find ways to increased use of tyrederived products in the construction 8

and maintenance of Australian Roads. Although rubberised asphalt and spray seal have both been in use in Australia for some time, the scope to increase use nationally offers a major opportunity to utilise recycled rubber. By co-funding the two projects, with Sustainability Victoria and the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads, TSA is playing a vital role in assisting the development of an Australia-wide market for tyre-derived products. According to Minister Hunt: “With Australia generating more than51 million end-of-life tyres per year the potential to turn an environmental challenge into an opportunity to improve roads is dramatic. “Turning waste into new industries and jobs is exactly why

the Federal Government supported the formation of Tyre Stewardship Australia. With the cooperative participation of the majority of tyre industry stakeholders, the organisation has made very impressive progress since I had the pleasure to launch it just over two years ago. “To actually see the end use of recycled tyres on improved road surfaces, here in my own electorate, is particularly gratifying. “I’m sure the research being conducted into ways to maximise the use of such recycled material will result in many more road applications across the nation. TSA and all the partners are to be congratulated on their ongoing efforts to deliver the sustainable and value-generating management of our end-of-life tyres.”

Kumho wins Red Dot Design award for fifth year running

F

or the fifth year in succession Kumho has been honoured with a prestigious Red Dot Design Award. Kumho’s winning entries within the product design category were the K-Silent Tyre and Road Venture MT51. Held in Germany since 1955, the Red Dot Design Award pays tribute to winners in three categories - product, communication and concept. The advanced technology of the K-Silent Tyre - introduced in certain global markets in June 2015 - reduces the noise of air vibration in a tyre. Known as resonance

12

noise, it is caused by friction between the tyre and the ground. The mud terrain Road Venture MT51 is intended for both on- and off-road use and underwent testing on all manner of surfaces in the

Australian outback. The zigzag tread blocks have been designed to cope with rocky roads and help prevent stones and mud from becoming stuck in the grooves. “The Red Dot Award ceremony is one of the world’s largest gatherings for those involved in industrial design. The receipt of the Award for a fifth consecutive year is welcome independent recognition of the competitiveness of our designs,” said Jeong Taek-Gyun, Senior Managing Director of Kumho’s R&D headquarters. “We will continue to build on our capabilities in design and all other areas of tyre technology in order to further enhance our brand image.”

Hybrid and Electric Vehicle sales to exceed 17 million by 2020 as ‘range anxiety’ lessens A new study forecasts that nearly 17 million hybrid and electric vehicles will be on the road by 2020, up from an estimated 12 million last year. UK firm Juniper Research, who carried out the study, believes that stakeholders primarily need to establish the viability and desirability of electric vehicles with consumers, and adopt an aggressive ‘go to market’ strategy that includes: 1. The rolling out of a wide-scale public charging infrastructure – that is seen as both ongoing and committed. 2. Improving vehicle battery life and range per charge. 3. Conducting effective consumer education campaigns, with attractive incentives to change. The new research, ‘Hybrid and Electric Vehicles: Consumer and Commercial Markets’, found that electric car manufacturers are prioritising ‘range’ as the key issue. OEMs, such as Tesla and

Juniper Research ranked the top 5 electric vehicle manufacturers, scoring them on five key factors: Vehicle range (EPA rated mileage (Environmental Protection Agency)); Vehicle sales; Infrastructure implementation; Time spent in development and deployment; Future plans and innovation. The top ranked manufacturers were: 1. Tesla 2. BMW 3. Nissan 4. Chevrolet 5. Ford Tesla, an OEM solely manufacturing electric vehicles, scored highly with strong

sales, superior mileage range and firm commitment to their Tesla Supercharge scheme. While BMW and Nissan have witnessed high sales, their electric vehicle capabilities lag behind Tesla. Additionally, the research highlighted the urgent need to invest in consumer education focusing on the capabilities and benefits of electric vehicles, as well the need for an aggressive investment plan to install public charging outlets on all major routes. It recommended that OEMs take an active role in this education process, investing in campaigns to communicate the capabilities and benefits of electric vehicles in order for them to be viewed as a real alternative to combustion engines.

Chevrolet understand that ‘range anxiety’ is the greatest hindrance to the adoption of electric vehicles. In order to meet the expectations of the combustion engine

vehicle market, Tesla and Chevrolet have focused their efforts towards ensuring that their models’ mileage range can exceed 320kms on a fully-charged vehicle.

Yokohama to launch ultimate street sport tyre

Y

okohama is to begin marketing a new street-legal sport tyre developed for use in circuit and gymkhana events - the Advan A052. To come in 16 sizes, ranging from 16 to 18 inches, the Advan A052 will be the successor to the Advan A048. Yokohama says the new tyre improves upon the Advan A048’s already superior cornering and stable handling to deliver ‘unprecedented grip performance in wet and dry conditions’. The tread design is developed from the tarmac rally tyre Advan A051T, which has been used at many rallies in Europe, as well as the Yokohama A008. It also meets the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe’s global standard for rolling sound emissions, ECE Regulation No.117 Revision 2 (R117-02).

Hankook design tyres on visionary Opel GT Concept A mongst other products, Hankook exhibited a new concept tyre on the Opel GT Concept vehicle at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show. Despite its prototype status, the specially solid-coloured tyres - red on the front axle and black on the rear, can be driven at speeds of up to 100 km/h. When producing the concept tyres, Hankook engineers faced challenges of preparing the sidewall and tread pattern alongside the creation of rubber colour samples according to Opel specifications. The red front tyres are an essential visual component of the study, forming the beginning of the striking red ‘signature line’ which highlights the contour of the GT Concept. The prominent colouring is made possible by a special tread and side wall compound which contains alternative filler materials on a white colour basis rather than carbon black. Hankook says the design and structure of the concept tyres are similar to regular road tyres despite the red and black colour differences, and sizing of the concept tyres correspond approximately to the conventional tyre size 225/40R18. The processes of production are similar to the manufacturing steps for regular road tyres using the rapid prototyping method and subsequent construction of a mould, with suitable red and black rim inserts also produced

from the same material as the tread compound. Hankook Vice President Klaus Krause, Head of the Company’s European Technical Centre in Hanover, Germany, which played a crucial role in turning the specifications into real tyres, said that coloured tyres do not have to remain an element of fun for exhibition cars. “Visual aspects can favour coloured tyres. They would provide car drivers with further customisation options for their vehicles, and the beautiful Opel GT Concept will certainly provide drivers with an insight to what the future can hold.”

2016

GENEVA MOTOR SHOW F

irst held in 1905, the Geneva International Motor Show has become one of the most important Motor Shows on the automotive industry calendar and is visited by more that 700,000 people over its 10-day run.

The March 2016 edition of the Show was as popular as ever as people swarmed the Geneva Palexpo Convention Centre to get a glimpse of some truly astounding cars. Here are just a few of the exotic models that were debuted at this year’s event.

LAMBORGHINI CENTENARIO LAMBORGHINI PRESENTED YET another limited edition supercar model, the Centenario, at the Show. Created to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the birth of the company’s founder, Ferruccio Lamborghini, the amazing Centenario has a naturally-aspirated V12 developing 770hp and lots of cutting-edge features, including carbon-fibre construction, advanced aerodynamics and rear-wheel steering. Able to top out at over 350km/h and shift from 0-100km/h in 2.8 seconds, the Centenario is as swift as it looks. Lamborghini is making just 20 coupe and 20 roadster versions of the car and though the price tag is $2.6million it is likely to sell like hot cakes.

DS E-TENSE CONCEPT

OPEL GT CONCEPT A TINY SPORTS car concept from GM’s European arm, behind the funky tyres and curious design features such as the apparently windowless doors, the GT Concept may well be a sign of where GM is heading with its designs and technology. Beneath the GT’s stretched bonnet is a powerful 1-litre, three-cylinder turbocharged engine. Developing 143hp and maximum torque of 205Nm, the engine delivers drive to the rear wheels and, weighing under 1000kg, the GT accelerates from 0-100km/h in less than eight seconds and on to a maximum speed of 134mph.

18

PEUGEOT/CITROEN’S DS brand unveiled a new supercar at the show, the E-Tense – an all-electric, 402hp beauty with, the company says, a mixed cycle range of 310km. Manufactured from carbon-fibre with a focus on aerodynamics, the E-Tense has its lithium-ion batteries situated under the chassis meaning a low centre of gravity which, the company says, allows the car to handle with ‘rigour and precision’. Capable of 0-100km/h in 4.5 seconds and a top speed of 250km/h the E-Tense likely is a hint of the design future of the DS brand.

FERRARI GTC4 LUSSO A FOUR-SEATER beauty from the geniuses at Ferrari, the GTC4Lusso sports the latest evolution of the naturally-aspirated Ferrari GT V12. In fact, the performance figures are those of a true thoroughbred sports car, with a maximum speed of 335 km/h and acceleration from 0-100 km/h in just 3.4 seconds. Major improvements in vehicle dynamics, including in the four-wheel drive-fourwheel steering system, and a myriad of hi-tech information and entertainment features inside, make this one of the finest Ferraris yet.

MASERATI LEVANTE

BUGATTI CHIRON THE SUCCESSOR TO the awesome Veyron, the Bugatti Chiron is, as expected, a wonderful-looking machine. It looks fantastic and will be, the company says, ‘the most luxurious and most exclusive production super sports car in the world’. However, most people aren’t interested in the level of trim, or the careful stitching on the upholstery. What they want to know is what engine lurks beneath the flowing exterior lines of the Chiron, how much thunder it produces and just how fast it can propel the big Bugatti down a race track. The answer? A thumpingly monstrous 8-litre, 16-cylinder engine producing 1500hp can launch the Chiron from 0-100km/h in 2.5seconds, on to a limited top speed of 420km/h (the true unlimited top speed is, as yet, to be discovered). Performance this good doesn’t come cheap, of course, and with only 500 units to be produced, the Chiron price tag is as scary as its performance – one will set you back an astronomical $3.5million.

MASERATI UNVEILED ITS first SUV at the Show. The company says the Levante's chassis is designed to combine outstanding performance both on and off-road and has a high level of content as standard, with all versions featuring sophisticated electronic suspension and 'Q4' intelligent all-wheel drive. The SUV is fitted with a 3-litre V6 Twin-Turbo petrol engine with either 350hp or 430hp, and a 3-litre V6 Turbo Diesel churning out 275hp. The interior has, apparently, been created with ‘the finest materials, from optional premium leather to Ermenegildo Zegna silk, made in Trivero by the Zegna wool mill with a patented process’. Luxury, it seems, comes as standard.

ASTON MARTIN DB11 ASTON MARTIN HAS produced some of the most beautiful cars ever made, and the DB11 is another winner to come from the company’s design studio. At its heart is a 5.2-litre twin-turbocharged V12. Designed in-house, the engine pumps out 600hp and 700Nm of torque, making the DB11 the most powerful production DB model ever, capable of reaching 100km/h in just 3.9 seconds and a top speed of 320km/h. No news on whether James Bond might be driving the DB11 in his next cinematic outing, but if he does, it’s a perfect fit for the gentleman spy.

Pirelli makes its mark at Geneva P ZERO CORSA AND THE PAGANI HUAYRA BC The Pagani Huayra BC will run on P Zero Corsa in 255/30ZR20 and 355/25ZR21 sizes. The tyre has as aggressive-looking asymmetric tread pattern and, the company says, the geometry and structure of the bead has been designed to absorb the intense stress and flexing generated by a car that puts out more than 1000 horsepower.

MCLAREN 570S GT

P Zero Corsa and the Pagani Huayra BC

S

ome of the most exotic cars on display at the Geneva Show were equipped with Pirelli bespoke tyres. From the Ferrari GTC4 Lusso to Lamborghini Centenario, from the Pagani Huayra BC to the McLaren 570S GT as well as the Maserati Levante, Jaguar F-Pace and Audi R8 Spyder, the Italian manufacturer’s tyres were wellrepresented amongst luxury vehicles. It’s a result Pirelli puts down, in part, to a strategy of developing tyres that are tailor-made for each car. The company says the advanced performance and technical characteristics of today’s premium and prestige cars can no longer be sustained by identical tyres for every model and that using dedicated technologies in accordance with the needs that each manufacturer’s engineers identify at the design phase, means Pirelli is able to develop tyres that are tailor-made for each car. So, the tyres may still be called P Zero, Cinturato or Scorpion, but behind each name are many individual variants, specifically created for the cars that they are fitted to. An example of this work was the newest evolution of the Pirelli P Zero, debuted at Geneva and equipping some of the most powerful supercars at the Motor Show. 20

MASERATI LEVANTE Pirelli is the exclusive supplier for the Levante and has developed new P Zero compounds, profiles and structures for Maserati’s very first luxury crossover.

The new 570S GT will be equipped with P Zero and P Zero Corsa tyres in sizes of 225/35R19 for the front and 285/35R20 for the rear. The tyre features PNCS (Pirelli Noise Cancelling System), a new technology patented by Pirelli that reduces road noise from the grooves within the tyre using a polyurethane sponge within the tyre that absorbs vibrations.

FERRARI GTC4 LUSSO While asked to focus on comfort and performance by Ferrari engineers, Pirelli says it added an extra bonus by reducing the rolling resistance on the P Zero tyres for the GTC4 Lusso by a full 15 per cent – an objective achieved by controlling the deformation of the tyre at the moment when it makes contact with the road and by optimising the contact patch.

LAMBORGHINI CENTENARIO The firm’s most recent model is fitted with made-to-measure P Zero tyres designed to cope with an increase in power compared to the Huracan and Gallardo, providing superior handling and acceleration performance. Pirelli says its engineers concentrated on some key areas of development including the tread pattern design (improving the contact patch) and new hybrid reinforcement materials (which help the compound to warm up more effectively).

JAGUAR F-PACE Pirelli says that Jaguar had a number of priorities for the F-Pace tyres: high levels of comfort and low rolling resistance, with a sporty drive at the forefront as well. These demands were all satisfied, says Pirelli, by working on the individual tyre profiles and geometries for the F-Pace, and using latest-generation materials and compounds. Pirelli is the OE supplier for the 22-inch tyre size on the new Jaguar.

AUDI R8 SPYDER Audi’s convertible supercar will be fitted with bespoke P Zero tyres. Weighing in at 50 kilograms lighter than its coupe equivalent Pirelli says its engineers were asked to put its tyres on a diet as well. The new tyres are around 10% lighter than their predecessors.

Goodyear reveals concept tyres for autonomous cars G

oodyear revealed two innovative, and very sci-fi, new concept tyres at the Geneva Motor Show, with both futuristic designs aimed at an autonomous vehicle future. The company introduced the spherical Eagle-360, and the IntelliGrip, which features advanced sensor and treadwear technology. The company says that both tyres are designed with safety in mind and reflect Goodyear’s focus on anticipating the rapidly evolving needs of its customers.

“Goodyear’s concept tyres play a dual role in that future, both as creative platforms to push the boundaries of conventional thinking and test-beds for next-generation technologies.” “By steadily reducing the driver interaction and intervention in self-driving vehicles, tyres will play an even more important role as the primary link to the road,” said Joseph Zekoski, Goodyear’s senior vice president and chief technical officer. “Goodyear’s concept tyres play a dual role in that future, both as creative platforms to push the boundaries of conventional thinking and test-beds for next-generation technologies.”

consecutive win for Volkswagen and its astonishing Polo R cars. Latvala had a low start position on the Friday and Saturday, meaning he benefited

from slightly better conditions than Ogier, who was among those that ‘cleaned’ the gravel roads for the later starters. The result saw Latvala win all

Volkswagen 2017 Polo R WRC taking shape

V

W’s next generation Polo R WRC is going to be more powerful, faster and more spectacular and Volkswagen designers have produced a visual concept, revealing how the Polo R WRC may appear in the coming season. The new car will be about 50 millimetres wider and 25 kilograms lighter than the current car, and will generate 380 hp/280 kW – about 60hp/45Kw more than this year’s model. Volkswagen has been developing the third generation of the Polo R WRC since summer 2015, when the International Automobile

Federation (FIA) released the new regulations for the highest class of rallying in the world. Having already successfully tested key components in the current chassis, development now enters the crucial phase. ‘‘The 2017 WRC regulations include

he said. “This is a fantastic result. After the disappointing results in the first two events, it was important to finally pick up points . . . Naturally, I had a good basis with my starting position this weekend, but the longest rally of the season still had to be mastered. We found a good set-up and also chose the right tactics. Rosberg victorious in Australia, Bah M

ercedes started the 2016 Formula One season with a one-two podium finish at the year’s opening race at the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne. Nico Rosberg claimed the victory, defending champion Lewis Hamilton finished second, with Ferrari’s Sebastien Vettel taking the last podium spot. Though the result seems to indicate that Mercedes will be the force to beat again this season, the race was tight enough to suggest the gap between the teams is getting closer and Mercedes will not have it all their own way this year. It was an action-packed GP, marked by a monster crash involving McLaren’s Fernando Alonso on Lap 18. Thankfully, Alonso walked away from the accident, which saw him clip the Haas team car of Esteban Gutierrez and flip horrifyingly to a halt at Turn 3. The crash altered the dynamics of the race and, perhaps, its outcome. The 20-minute break to clear debris from the track saw Mercedes take advantage of a tyre strategy that meant they could drive through to the end of the race without a further change while Ferrari were forced to pit Vettel again, losing precious time to his rivals. Up to that moment, Ferrari looked to be in control, with Vettel performing solidly after a spectacular start saw him outstrip pole-sitter Hamilton - who had a horror start, falling to sixth spot by the second corner - and second-placed Rosberg to take the lead at the first turn. In victory, Rosberg recognised that the Ferrari team looked set to offer the biggest challenge to what has been two years of Mercedes domination. “That was a perfect race for me,” said Rosberg. “The start was tricky, as I was on the dirty side of the grid and Vettel managed to be ahead. He did a really good job at the start – but we chose the perfect strategy by going onto the medium tyre after the red flag. We can enjoy this moment for sure – but we know now just how strong those red cars will be this season, so we cannot afford to relax.” 26

For Australian fans, there was something to celebrate in the performance of Daniel Ricciardo, who drove superbly to a 4th place finish. “Today was fun for me,” said the Aussie. “At the start we were able to pick cars off. We had good pace and it was fun to be able to pass cars - I was enjoying that as always . . . Fourth is still

a good result and I’m happy we’re not that far off Mercedes and Ferrari.” While the race itself was hailed as an action-packed success, the new qualifying format, tried for the first time in Melbourne, most assuredly was not. The revised knock-out format, which saw drivers eliminated every 90 seconds during the final minutes of each of the three qualifying sessions, was highly anticipated. However, in the third session, teams were content to conserve tyres and sit out the closing minutes. The upshot was that the hoped-for fight for pole never eventuated, disappointing fans, drivers and F1 administrators.

BAHRAIN The new format survived through to the Bahrain race where, once again, the Mercedes qualified fastest with Hamilton on pole and Rosberg in second.

It was another successful outing for Rosberg in Bahrain

But it was Rosberg who went on to win the GP and - after taking into account his late burst of success at the end of last season - this win was his fifth victory in a row. Hamilton dropped to ninth on the opening lap after a Turn 1 contact with Williams’ Valtteri Bottas, but still managed a creditable third place finish. The challenge from Ferrari, instead of coming from Sebastian Vettel, came from Kimi Raikkonen. Vettel's car failed to start following a suspected engine failure while Raikkonen performed brilliantly to take second spot on the podium. Rosberg, however, was flawless, and from the moment the flag fell to start the race he was never under real, consistent pressure. "The start was definitely the key to my win," said Rosberg. "That was a really great moment, as it was an area that we put a lot effort into before the race. "Leading into Turn One was a relief, to be honest, as I could see in my

mirrors that it was very busy behind me. But from then on I was able to control the pace and take the win . . . It was an almost perfect weekend for me." Once again, Daniel Ricciardo performed well, scoring another fourth place finish - a finish that saw him move to third place in the overall drivers' standings.

Formula One's experiment with the new qualifying system ended in China. The widespread criticism aimed at the format was enough for officials to revert to the previous format. That format, where the slowest six cars are eliminated at the end of the first two qualifying sessions before a final ten-car shootout for Pole in Q3, produced an exciting race for the top spot and threw a couple of surprises into the mix. Rosberg took pole and the Ferraris of Raikkonen and Vettel filled spots three and four, but Ricciardo and Red Bull found a burst of speed to be second on the grid. Hamilton, meanwhile, following a problem with his Mercedes' power unit, was forced to start from the back of the grid. As for the race, it was an actionpacked monster of an event even though Rosberg, on his own at the front of the pack, cruised to another dominant victory - his sixth in a row. A sensational start from Ricciardo saw him take the lead only for a tyre blowout on Lap 3 relegate him down the field. Prangs galore during a dramatic opening few minutes also hampered two other pre-race favourites - Hamilton and Vettel. However, sensational drives from Vettal and Ricciardo saw them make incredible recoveries. Ricciardo drove brilliantly to recover to fourth, despite being 17th at the end of lap four. Vettel, meanwhile, did even better, taking second place on the podium after sitting as low as 15th at one point. However, once again, it was Rosberg who left the track with the trophy and already it's looking like it is the German driver's championship to lose.

Nissan GT-R breaks the fastest drift world record N issan has set the Guinness World Records title for the fastest ever drift. The record was broken with a speed of 304.96 km/h and 30-degree angle using a specially-tuned MY16 Nissan GT-R. Masato Kawabata, the Japanese drift champion and title holder for the Japanese drifting series, clinched the record from former holder Jakub Przygonski of Poland. The record was set during a special event that took place at Fujairah International Airport, UAE. The record-breaking Nissan GT-R was developed with the support and coordination of NISMO specialists. It was tuned to 1380hp (approximately 1030kW of power) in order to set the record, and adapted so all the power went to the rear wheels. The GT-R was prepared by GReddy Trust and tested extensively at Japan’s Fuji Speedway facility with Kawabata at the wheel. "Once again, Nissan has broken a Guinness World Records title and has made international history for the fifth time in the Middle East," said Samir Cherfan, Managing Director of Nissan Middle East. "The Nissan GT-R is one of the world’s most iconic supercars, proving time and again the incredible breadth of its capabilities, and has clearly demonstrated its performance leadership by beating the best drift cars out there. The fact that this 28

Setting this incredibly difficult world record was a clear demonstration of the excitement we are bringing to the Middle East with the NISMO brand." Kawabata used Toyo Tires Proxes

R1R for the record, a tyre available off the shelf at Toyo retailers. “This incredible new record is testament to Kawabata’s incredible skill and the extreme performance of the off-the-shelf, road legal Proxes R1R,” said Jose Angeles, Toyo Tires marketing manager. “The world record speaks volumes for the entire Proxes range of ultra-high performance tyres.” Fujairah International Airport was chosen for its three kilometre long airstrip which was deemed to be sufficiently long enough for the challenge. From the outset, Nissan wanted to perform the drift at a speed of more than 300km/h and Kawabata, who leads in the Japanese drifting series for Team Toyo and is the defending champion, was chosen from a group of highly specialised competition drivers.

Tyre supplier Michelin, returning to the sport after a seven-year absence, had encountered some issues in the previous race in Argentina. An incident during free practice saw the rear of Scott Redding’s Ducati damaged and officials deemed it necessary to withdraw both versions of the rear tyre that were available to all riders, replacing it with a new tyre designed with a stiffer construction. Though the circumstances of the incident remained unclear, Michelin brought new rear tyres to the Austin circuit following a decision to begin production on a brand new version. In quite the manufacturing and logistical feat, the company began the tyre build process on the preceding Monday in France and the tyres were then shipped to Texas, arriving in separate batches at the track on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evening. The new tyres had a stiffer construction with a softer compound, designed specifically for the Austin circuit and, the company said, ‘. . . were built with a significant respect for safety to counter any incidents like the one encountered in Argentina last weekend’.

Gender divides autopilot drivers

A

new study concludes that men and women drift into different worlds when switched to ‘autopilot’ and hope for different benefits from future automotive advances. Women drivers are nearly twice as likely as their male counterparts to compile a mental shopping or ‘to do’ list, whilst men listen to music, the radio or podcasts. Eight in ten road users admit they sometimes drive on autopilot – zoning out for some or all of their journey. The issue appears to be getting worse as the same study in 2009 found six in ten failed to concentrate throughout their trip. The research is part of Continental Tyres’ ‘Vision Zero’, a long-term commitment to reduce accidents through innovative tyre technologies and automotive systems. It was also revealed that men are far less worried that being an autopilot motorist impacts their safety, with 41 per cent not bothered if they sometimes tune out – 24 per cent more than with women. “Although both men and women are physically engaged in driving, if they are distracted that presents a risk,” said Mark Griffiths, safety expert for Continental Tyres. “It is possible that what they think about when ‘zoned out’ can make a big difference when they need to concentrate fully. “This research also identifies clear differences in the environment when the different genders are more prone to being distracted, and given the impact on likely speeds this informs our

“It is possible that what they think about when ‘zoned out’ can make a big difference when they need to concentrate fully.” constant drive to improve road safety.” The study of 2,000 drivers determined that women are 57 per cent more likely to be distracted on small side roads – when travelling slower – whilst men are 48 per cent more likely to switch to autopilot when on motorways. A quarter of all drivers say that being distracted happens as often as one in five journeys – with around one in six men admitting they often cannot remember the entire journey. “Driving is a complex task that requires our attention but not necessarily our absolute concentration, as long as everything is happening like we expect it to on the road,” said Professor John Groeger, driving psychologist at the University of Hull. "Without concentration, reacting to something unexpected may simply take too long for us to respond safely. "The sheer monotony of driving can mean maintaining concentration is very difficult and tiring though it is, it is vital that we get it right." As advances are made in automotive technology, more and more tasks are

removed from the driver – like parking assistance – so the potential exists for there to be less to concentrate on. Men are very positive about future automotive technology as they are 46 per cent more likely to suggest automated driving will increase road safety. Three in ten women are not sure whether such advances will be safer. When asked about the priorities for development, men were nearly twice as keen as women to see driverless cars on the road, whilst female motorists are 23 per cent more likely to want technology to improve protection for people in the event of a crash. Mark Griffiths of Continental Tyres said: “It’s important that all motorists are mindful about their concentration levels when on the road and that they make sure they feel refreshed and fit to drive. “And whatever technology is introduced to assist their driving, it’s essential that the driver remains in control and recognises their responsibility”. The top five distractions for men and women that are a risk to road safety are: Women 1. Bad weather – 49 per cent 2. Tiredness – 45 per cent 3. Noisy child – 36 per cent 3. Bad mood – 36 per cent 4. Other drivers / road rage – 34 per cent Men 1. Tiredness – 46 per cent 2. Bad weather – 36 per cent 3. Noisy child – 32 per cent 4. Other drivers / road rage – 30 per cent 5. Bad mood – 27 per cent. 31

A

von Tyres has marked its renewed sponsorship of Castle Combe Circuit, in Wiltshire – in what is believed to be the UK’s longeststanding sponsorship at any circuit – by revamping the famous Avon bridge crossing the pit lane entry. The current deal takes Avon Tyres through to 75 years of association with one of the fastest tracks in the country. Avon Tyres, located in Melksham, just 11 miles from Castle Combe Circuit, was one of the first

32

permanent sponsorships secured by the race venue, in 1954. Acting as the backdrop to many ontrack battles over the past six decades, the Avon-branded bridge stands out as a recognisable and well-loved feature at Castle Combe. Famous names to have passed under the Avon bridge include Ayrton Senna, Nigel Mansell, David Coulthard, John Surtees, Mike Hailwood, John McGuinness and Barry Sheene. The local tyre manufacturer’s support for the race venue is also

evident via the Race School on motorcycle track days, as a number of lead instructors can be seen riding on Avon tyres. Avon also supplies tyres to the Race School’s fleet of Formula Ford single-seaters and Ford Fiesta and Focus ST saloon cars. “Our commitment to Castle Combe is shown by the longevity of our association with the race venue, and through our latest revitalisation of the iconic Avon Tyres bridge,” said Sarah McRoberts, European Marketing Communications Manager for Avon Tyres. “As a drivers’ favourite in the UK, the circuit has seen numerous Formula 1 World Champions rise through the ranks of grassroots motorsport. The track also continues to support club racing and numerous motorsport events throughout the year.” “The Avon Bridge is an iconic landmark and probably the most recognisable feature of the circuit,” said Graham Marshallsay, Managing Director of Castle Combe Circuit. “We are delighted that our longstanding partnership with Avon Tyres is extending into a new era with the bridge’s fantastic new livery. It marks the final threshold all drivers cross to join the circuit but it also performs a vital function of providing safe foot passage for our thousands of loyal spectators!”

UK TyreSafe, the UK’s not-for-profit tyre safety awareness organisation, has released an online tyre pressure calculator for caravan owners. The unique web form tool developed by TyreSafe provides a valuable resource to ensure tyres are properly inflated for the journeys ahead. Simple to use, the TyreSafe Caravan Tyre Pressure Calculator requires just three pieces of information to be entered before generating a recommended pressure: • Maximum Technically Permitted Load Mass • Number of road wheels • Tyre size and load index Readily available on the move, it can be accessed via tyresafe.org on mobile devices, allowing owners to refer to the results while they are adjusting pressures. TyreSafe has also released an informative animation for caravan owners to guide them through the essential tyre safety checks and maintenance they need to carry out before making their first trip of the season. Ensuring wheel bolts are at the correct tension, every tyre has more than 1.6mm of tread with no lumps, bumps or cuts in them and, of course, that they are at the right pressure, is equally important for the caravan as it is for the vehicle towing them. The short animation can be found in the caravan tyre safety section at tyresafe.org and in the film and animation library.

Hankook Ventus Prime³ now ready for European Roads

H

ankook has introduced its new Ventus Prime3 for the European market. Developed to achieve the perfect balance between performance and comfort, safety and environmentally friendliness, the Ventus Prime3 is the latest premium comfort flagship of the company’s successful Ventus line. The tyre is available in 53 dimensions ranging from 15 to 18 inches. Improved braking abilities through the use of a new high grip silica compound, and better dispersion of polymers and fillers within the tread compound has, the company says, resulted in an approximately 8% improved wet braking performance whilst also reducing the tyre’s rolling resistance. Hankook says another significant step forward for the new Ventus Prime3 is the progress that has been made in its dry performance capabilities. By applying a further optimised asymmetric tread design, the tyre’s contact area has been enlarged by 10 per cent. This, together with an improved tread stiffness for both lateral and radial directions, in combination with the solid outside shoulder and hybrid hardness design of the outer tread ribs, allows for a

superior dry handling performance. A 3 per cent improvement has been achieved for dry braking, while improved design, newlydeveloped polymers applied to the tread compound, and a number of other features have seen improvements in wear resistance, better handling and more precise steering responses and great controllability, even at high speeds. Further design features have, Hankook says, reduced noise and enhanced the tyre’s comfort characteristics. Like all Hankook Ventus products, the company’s new premium comfort tyre features a Visual Alignment Indicator (VAI) system on the shoulders, providing drivers with a simple and straightforward method for easily checking their car’s wheel alignment. 33
