CORPORATE PARTNERS

ELLO AND WELCOME to the May 2025 edition of Motor Trader. There was plenty going on in the automotive world over the past few weeks. Perhaps most notable was Auto Shanghai, one of the world's great motor shows. Given the influence of China in the automotive industry, and the ever-growing number of brands and vehicles we are beginning to see in Australia, Auto Shanghai gives stakeholders the opportunity to get a glimpse not only of of what is happening in the world's biggest new vehicle market, but also an inkling of what might be heading our way in the near future. With that in mind, the Australian Automotive Dealer Association (AADA) organised a study tour to the show and Rod Camm, MTA Queensland's CEO, joined the delegates to discover more. You can read about the trip and some insights from Rod from page 30. Back home, we continue our Celebrating Women in Auto feature series and catch up this month with Lara Wilde,

a trailblazing businesswoman with a lifelong obsession with cars. Car enthusiasts and motorsports fans from across Australia will recognise Lara as the knowledgeable voice on the microphone at events such as SummerNats, RockyNats and inumerable other shows, as well as the guest on many radio shows and podcasts. You can read more about Lara from page 24. Also in this edition, we cover the recent Auto Ready program and Careers Expo held at McCarthy Panel Works in Mackay—a fantastic event that brought together students and employers, helping to fuel future automotive careers in regional Queensland. We also detail the exciting upgrades to the MTA Institute workshop which, after more than a decade as a world-class resource for the training of Queensland's automotive techs and apprentices, is being upgraded with the very latest equipment - including cutting-edge ADAS calibration systems and electric vehicle servicing tools. It's a timely reminder that the best training environments evolve alongside industry needs, and that MTA Queensland and the MTA Institute are absolutely committed to delivering the best options to industry. I hope you enjoy this edition. heers C Jonathan Nash, Editor jonathann@mtaq.com.au May 2025 Motor Trader | 1

From the Desk of Management

T

HIS PAST FEW weeks have been incredibly busy for MTA Queensland as we continue to engage with members and industry stakeholders on the key issues affecting our sector. Firstly, congratulations to ROD CAMM the Australian Labor Party CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER MTA QUEENSLAND on their election win. We now urge the government to adopt the ten strategic actions outlined in the Motor Trades Association of Australia’s (MTAA) Election Blueprint. Developed in close consultation with industry, these recommendations provide a clear, actionable roadmap to address immediate challenges and drive longterm growth. Read more on page 18.

MTA QUEENSLAND IS ALSO PROUD TO CONTINUE OUR COLLABORATION WITH THE AUSTRALIAN AUTOMOTIVE DEALER ASSOCIATION . . . MTA Queensland is also proud to continue our collaboration with the Australian Automotive Dealer Association (AADA). It’s promising to see other state associations following suit and signing Memoranda of Understanding to amplify our collective voice and deliver stronger advocacy for dealer members. Recently, we had the privilege of joining AADA’s study tour to the Shanghai Auto Show, gaining valuable insight into cutting-edge automotive technologies. Highlights included OEM presentations and visits to innovative EV brands like Aion at the Cloud 9 shopping mall. Read more on page 30. To support our collision repair members, MTA Queensland recently hosted a dedicated industry forum to review proposed updates to the Motor Vehicle Insurance and Repair Industry (MVIRI) Code of Conduct. The session was designed to foster open, constructive dialogue, with attendees working in small groups to analyse the comparison slides and provide direct, practical feedback. Read more on page 14. We'll also be hosting an online version of the forum on 2 June – find out more and register HERE. We remain committed to ensuring member voices are heard and continue to influence our evolving industry. 4 | Motor Trader May 2025

S ROD MENTIONED, advocacy continues to be a key focus but so too is connection. The coming months are packed with opportunities to engage, with the MTA KELLIE DEWAR Queensland team attending DEPUTY CEO | GENERAL events including the Brisbane MANAGER MEMBER SERVICES Truck Show, Capricorn Trade Show, HSY Evolve Auto Festival, WorldSkills, Autocare, and the AADA Convention. We’re looking forward to seeing many of you there! Beyond these, we’re also rolling out a range of exciting MTA Queensland events across the state. In April, we held our first Auto Women Connect event for 2025 - a dynamic online session featuring executive coach Sue Rosen, who shared insights on building leadership capability. We’ve also kicked off our 2025 Auto Women Socials, starting in Cairns with an outstanding turnout. These events are a fantastic way to connect, and we strongly encourage others to join us. Next stops: Rockhampton, Hervey Bay, Brisbane, and Townsville - with even more dates coming soon. Outside of the Auto Women program, we’re also focused on creating opportunities for members to connect with the next generation of automotive professionals. In May, we’re hosting two key events - the Automotive Careers Expo in Brisbane and the Automotive Meet & Greet on the Gold Coast - both of which are aimed at building connections between members, high school students, and jobseekers exploring career pathways in the industry. Looking further ahead, we’re gearing up for two major highlights in our events calendar. Tickets are now available for our Trackside Breakfast at the Townsville 500 in July - a fantastic opportunity to network while enjoying one of motorsport’s most exciting weekends. And in September, we’ll celebrate a milestone with our 75th Motor Trades Golf Day, bringing together industry peers for a day of friendly competition, great conversation, and community spirit. It’s a vibrant time for MTA Queensland, and we’re genuinely excited to be connecting with so many of you at these events across the state!

Super Q&A CareSuper’s Education Specialist and super expert Terry Bryan answers your super-related questions.

Julie, 43, Devonport

Answer: Great question! Yes, using your superannuation can be a smart way to save on tax, and here’s how it works. Called concessional (before-tax) contributions these include employer contributions (like the super guarantee), any salary-sacrificed contributions or personal deductible contributions you make. These are taxed at 15% within the super fund, which is usually lower than your personal income tax rate. You can receive before-tax contributions of up to $30,000 during the 2024-25 financial year. This includes your employer contributions.

Take your financial knowledge to the next level. Join one of our upcoming in-person events or webinars.

You can also use the carry-forward rule to catch up on your before-tax contributions from previous years. If your total super balance was less than $500,000 at the end of the previous financial year, you can exceed your cap by carrying forward any unused portions from the previous 5 years. Learn more about the different types of super contributions and contribution caps at caresuper.com.au/contributions. If you have a super-related question, we can help. Geoff Kachel with daughter Jess and baby Dom from Tully Tyre Service

MTA |Q&A The doors to Tully Tyre Service originally opened in the Far North Queensland town of Tully in the 1940s. Today, it is still going strong with a fourth generation of the owning family now crawling around the workshop ready to take the wheel. Motor Trader dropped in to meet the one of the owners, Geoff Kachel, and learn more about the tyre business in Tully. WORDS & IMAGES: LARA WILDE 8 | Motor Trader May 2025

GEOFF, HOW DID YOU COME TO BE IN THE TYRE BUSINESS? GK: I was born and bred in Goomeri, a

long way south of Tully. I grew up farming originally but after school I left the family farm and headed to Brisbane to join the police force and undertake my training as a police officer. When I graduated, I was stationed in Innisfail and got to know the area around the town, including Mission Beach and Tully, very well. When I turned 30, I wanted to get out of the police force. My father-inlaw owned this building, so I bought the business from him in 1996.

DID YOU HAVE AN AUTOMOTIVE TRADE OR JUST A CAREER IN THE POLICE FORCE BEHIND YOU? GK: I don’t have formal trade qualifications - just an ability to read people, a can-do

“WHEN I GRADUATED, I WAS STATIONED IN INNISFAIL AND GOT TO KNOW THE AREA AROUND THE TOWN, INCLUDING MISSION BEACH AND TULLY, VERY WELL.” attitude and a willingness to learn and have a go.

SO, BY BUYING THE BUSINESS YOU KEPT IT IN THE FAMILY? GK: Yes. At first it belonged to my father-in-

law Neil, then myself, and then I sold 50 per cent to my daughter Jess. Now Jess has four children roaming around the office and the workshop! I hope they will be smarter than us and May 2025 Motor Trader | 9

MTA | Q&A will go off to university for a bigger career than here has to offer.

ARE YOU HANDS ON ON THE TOOLS TODAY? GK: Very much so. Between the workshop and the office, I am kept very busy taking care of business.

WHAT IS THE CORE BUSINESS AT TULLY TYRE SERVICE? GK: Our primary bread and butter business is tyres, followed closely by servicing, repairs and maintenance of passenger vehicles. Besides that, we also look after the local ambulance vehicles, as well as four-wheel drives, logbook servicing, we install lift kits, look after earth moving machinery for the local quarries and take care of the cane harvest vehicles and machinery during the sugar season.

WHO IS IN YOUR TEAM? GK: My daughter Jess manages the office with Shayna. We hope to hire another admin person soon. In the workshop there is me and two trade-qualified full-time light vehicle mechanics Chey and Ben. Matthew, Mitchell, and Ryley are our

full-time tyre fitters. I would like to hire another one or two tyre fitters if we can find the right people.

WHAT IS THE GREATEST CHALLENGE IN RUNNING A TYRE SERVICE IN TULLY? GK: Finding the right people to join our team. It is important that they are great at their job and share our work ethic, but it is also very important that they enjoy life in a small town. We live in paradise here with some of the most pristine beaches, fantastic fishing and opportunities for camping and outdoor adventures.

DO YOU DO MUCH TRAINING WITH YOUR STAFF? GK: I prefer to find staff who have the right attitude and a basic grasp of the skills who

“I PREFER TO FIND STAFF WHO HAVE THE RIGHT ATTITUDE AND A BASIC GRASP OF THE SKILLS WHO WE CAN THEN TRAIN UP THE WAY WE LIKE.”

we can then train up the way we like. If you bring in experienced guys from other workshops, they often bring bad habits with them. I also prefer to hire matureaged staff. They are more stable as a rule and better able to handle hard work in the tropics.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO A YOUNG GEOFF STARTING OUT IN THE INDUSTRY? GK: Business in a small town is very different to the cities. In the city, your business is all about price and trying to compete on every dollar. In a small town it is about relationships and being a part of the community.

HOW DO YOU MAKE SURE THAT TULLY TYRE SERVICE IS A PART OF THIS COMMUNITY? GK: We donate to, and sponsor, a lot of community events: the local schools, the sporting teams, the local bull ride and so on. We don’t officially consider it a part of our marketing strategy, but we feel it is important for us to contribute to locals in our region.

WHAT IS YOUR MARKETING STRATEGY? DOES SOCIAL MEDIA PLAY A ROLE? GK: Social media probably should play a larger role, but we are very busy based just on word of mouth. Even though we don’t have main highway frontage, May 2025 Motor Trader | 11

Right: The Tully Tyre Service team: Chey, Shayna, Geoff, Jess, and Matthew we do have grey nomads visiting in their caravans and we have found some of them come back regularly every year. We focus on our personal relationship with our customers as our key marketing strategy.

HAVE THERE BEEN ANY TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCEMENTS IN THE TYRE INDUSTRY THAT HAVE MADE YOUR WORK EASIER? GK: Diagnostic tools are amazing now, but the greatest introduction to our workshop has been the truck-fitting machine. The truck-fitting machine makes life much easier, it reduces the amount of manual labour, and it is much safer for our staff as there is far less strain on them physically.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN A MEMBER OF MTA QUEENSLAND? GK: We only found out about MTA Queensland a year or two ago. It has been wonderful for our business though – to have access to industry-specific human resource tools for Fair Work, and legal advice to draft work contracts and business policies.

LIVING IN PARADISE, WHAT DO YOU DO IN YOUR SPARE TIME? GK: I am not actually a car person, so I only have my one old V8 Toyota Landcruiser. I like to stay active in my garden, swimming or walking more than 10km along the pristine sand in Mission Beach. 12 | Motor Trader May 2025

“BUSINESS IN A SMALL TOWN IS VERY DIFFERENT TO THE CITIES. IN THE CITY, YOUR BUSINESS IS ALL ABOUT PRICE AND TRYING TO COMPETE ON EVERY DOLLAR. IN A SMALL TOWN IT IS ABOUT RELATIONSHIPS AND BEING A PART OF THE COMMUNITY.” WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR THE NEXT FIVE TO TEN YEARS? GK: We don’t have any plans to expand the business or increase the service offering. We did look at additional services but decided to stick to the core business. I hope to stay on the tools for another five years with Jess CLICK managing the office. Once TO VISIT THE TULLY I put the tools down, I TYRE SERVICE will step into more a of a FACEBOOK PAGE management / consulting role to support Jess.

MTAQ HOSTS MAJOR FORUM AS INDUSTRY TACKLES OVERHAUL OF MVIRI CODE OF CONDUCT

A

USTRALIA’S MOTOR VEHICLE Insurance and Repair Industry (MVIRI) Code of Conduct is undergoing a significant update in a move aimed at modernising the agreement that governs relations between smash repairers and insurers. Originally introduced in 2006 as a voluntary framework, the Code was designed to promote fairness, transparency, and efficient dispute resolution across the vehicle repair and insurance sectors. However, in 2023, an independent review led by Dr. Michael Schaper identified several areas where the Code required modernisation to remain effective and relevant. The review highlighted issues such as declining usage, limited awareness among industry participants, and challenges in dispute resolution processes, and it triggered a nationwide consultation process, with stakeholders across the sector — including paint and panel shop

“OUR MEMBERS WANT A CODE THAT SUPPORTS SUSTAINABLE BUSINESS PRACTICES, FOSTERS TRUST AND ACCOUNTABILITY ACROSS THE INDUSTRY, AND PROVIDES CLEAR, ENFORCEABLE PROCESSES FOR RESOLVING DISPUTES.”

owners — offering feedback on a new draft version of the Code. Key changes in the resulting draft Code included stronger compliance mechanisms, simplified language, a modernised dispute resolution process, and rules that reflect technological advances in the automotive sector. That revised draft of the MVIRI Code of Conduct was subsequently released for public consultation – a period that will run through to June 23 – inviting feedback to the Code Administration Ben Chester field, from Car Craft, talking Committee (CAC) from industry code. draft the of details on es attende forum with participants, regulators, and other stakeholders. In April, MTA Queensland hosted a forum for collision repair sector members to help craft the detail of MTA Queensland's feedback. More than 30 stakeholders – owners, managers and representatives of collision repair businesses – attended the forum, with attendees split into

groups to consider various topics relevant to the draft Code. Together, they worked toward building that comprehensive proposal to be submitted to the CAC. “We were very pleased with the turnout - particularly with the level of engagement in the room. It was a highly interactive and productive session,” said Kellie Dewar, Deputy CEO of MTA Queensland and facilitator of the meeting. “A key takeaway from the meeting was that the current draft of the Code does not yet fully meet the needs of the industry,” she added. “Feedback highlighted the importance of strengthening governance structures, clarifying sanctions and penalties, standardising of Times and Rates, ensuring fair dispute resolution processes, and addressing issues around

assessment timeframes. Attendees strongly agreed that the revised Code must be fair, transparent, and practical for repair businesses operating on the ground.” While feedback from the forum will form the building blocks of MTA Queensland’s submission to the CAC, Kellie added that opportunities to add to it will be available through online forums. “Our focus now is on ensuring that the views of our members are clearly represented and that the final version of the Code addresses the practical realities faced by businesses in the collision repair sector,” said Kellie. “We will run an online session to continue to give the broader industry an opportunity to provide feedback. “The ultimate goal is to develop a Code that is fair, balanced, and genuinely fit for purpose,” said Kellie. “Our members want a Code that supports sustainable business practices, fosters trust and accountability across the industry, and provides clear, enforceable processes for resolving disputes. “MTA Queensland is committed to working with our national body, MTAA, to ensure that the final version of the Code reflects these priorities and delivers meaningful improvements for the industry.” May 2025 Motor Trader | 15

This is the second series in our Collision Industry Forum. Join fellow business owners, tradespeople, and other stakeholders from the Collision Industry. MTAA WELCOMES GOV'T CONSIDERATION TO ABOLISH LUXURY CAR TAX

T

HE MOTOR TRADES Association of Australia (MTAA) strongly supports the Australian Government's consideration of abolishing the $5.2 billion luxury car tax (LCT) as part of negotiations for a free trade agreement with the European Union. The proposed removal of the 33% tax on vehicles above the thresholds of $91,387 for fuel-efficient vehicles and $80,567 for other vehicles would benefit Australian consumers and automotive businesses significantly. "The luxury car tax has long been outdated and inefficient, unfairly impacting Australian motorists and businesses," said Rod Camm, Interim Executive Director of the MTAA. "Its removal would help reduce vehicle costs for consumers whilst supporting thousands of automotive businesses across the country during a critical period of industry transformation." The MTAA believes abolishing the LCT would deliver multiple benefits to the Australian automotive sector, including:

■ I ncreased affordability of newer, safer, and more environmentally friendly vehicles ■ E nhanced competitiveness for Australian automotive retailers ■ Expanded consumer choice in the Australian market

“THE LUXURY CAR TAX HAS LONG BEEN OUTDATED AND INEFFICIENT, UNFAIRLY IMPACTING AUSTRALIAN MOTORISTS AND BUSINESSES.”

■ Support for employment across sales, service, repair, and parts sectors "The potential removal of this tax represents a significant opportunity to modernise Australia's automotive taxation framework at a time when our industry is undergoing unprecedented technological and structural change," Mr Camm said. The MTAA looks forward to continued collaboration with the government as the industry navigates this transition period, particularly regarding electric vehicle adoption and supporting infrastructure development. "We stand ready to work constructively with the Albanese Government to ensure that reforms like the abolition of the luxury car tax deliver maximum benefit to Australian consumers and businesses whilst supporting the industry's sustainable future," added Mr Camm. vehicle-related complaints a significant concern. They made up over 4,350 cases - around 20 per cent of all complaints and ranked among the top five most reported issues. The OFT’s successful intervention has resulted in more than $11.8 million returned to consumers, including a substantial refund of over $76,990 for one Queenslander who faced persistent issues with a vehicle purchase. This outcome highlights the importance of robust regulation and consumer advocacy in the automotive sector. MTA Queensland has long championed the cause of ethical and high-quality automotive service providers. As the peak body representing Queensland’s automotive industry, the Association

remains committed to eliminating dodgy operators that threaten consumer safety, undermine reputable businesses, and erode public trust. “Unlicensed vehicle dealers - often referred to as ‘backyard operators’ - continue to pose a serious risk to consumers,” said Rod Camm, CEO of MTA Queensland. “These individuals misrepresent themselves as private sellers to avoid their legal obligations. Consumers who purchase from such sources are denied basic protections like cooling-off periods and statutory warranties safeguards that apply when dealing with licensed dealers.” To combat these threats, MTA Queensland operates several public reporting platforms, including: ■ D ob in a Backyarder – A tool for consumers and licensed businesses to report unlicensed dealers, assisting OFT enforcement efforts. ■ R eport Odometer Fraud – A platform to report illegal tampering of vehicle odometers, helping to prevent financial loss and maintain road safety. Odometer tampering remains a serious offence in Queensland, deceiving consumers into overpaying for vehicles

MTA Queensland strongly supports enforcement actions that hold offenders accountable and protect buyers. “Through our ongoing ‘Don’t Get Taken for a Ride’ campaign, we encourage all Queenslanders to make informed, confident automotive purchases by choosing businesses that are MTA Queensland members. Our ‘Find a Member’ directory helps consumers locate licensed automotive professionals committed to the highest standards of integrity and service,” added Mr Camm. Whether buying a vehicle, seeking repairs, or maintaining your car, choosing an MTA Queensland member ensures you are backed by industry-best practices.

MTAQ CONGRATULATES ALP ON ELECTION WIN & CALLS FOR ACTION ON AUTO INDUSTRY PRIORITIES

TA QUEENSLAND EXTENDS its congratulations to the Australian Labor Party on its success in the 2025 Federal Election. MTA Queensland is committed to working constructively with the re-elected government to ensure the long-term strength and sustainability of Australia’s automotive industry. As a key contributor to the national economy and one of the country’s largest employment sectors, the automotive industry faces significant pressures that demand immediate and strategic action. From skills shortages to evolving environmental responsibilities, the sector requires targeted policy responses to thrive. "We commend the Labor Party on its election success and look forward to a productive partnership focused on securing the future of the automotive

Anthony Albanese secured a second term as Prime Minister follwing May's federal election industry - an industry that sustains jobs, drives local economies, and supports communities across metropolitan and regional Australia," said Rod Camm, CEO of MTA Queensland.

MTA Queensland urges the government to implement the ten strategic actions outlined in its Election Blueprint, developed by the Motor Trades Association of Australia (MTAA) in close consultation with industry members and stakeholders. These recommendations form a comprehensive roadmap to address immediate challenges and enable longterm growth. Among the most critical challenges is the national shortage of skilled labour, particularly in the technician and trades workforce. This shortage is limiting business growth, impacting service delivery, and slowing the industry’s ability to adapt to emerging technologies. Improving access to training, boosting apprenticeship pathways, and providing targeted support to employers must be top priorities. "Addressing the skills crisis and supporting independent businesses must be front and centre," said Mr Camm. "We need stronger, more targeted policies that attract apprentices, retain skilled workers, and support employers who invest in training. The future of our workforce depends on it." MTA Queensland is also advocating for reform of the Motor Vehicle Insurance and Repair Industry (MVIRI) Code of Conduct. Many small and independent collision repairers remain disadvantaged in negotiations with large insurers, and the current framework has proven insufficient in addressing systemic power imbalances. "MTA Queensland has long advocated for changes to the MVIRI Code of Conduct, and we welcome the current review process. With consultation open until the end of June, we will be making a robust submission on behalf of our members. This is a crucial opportunity to deliver fairness, transparency, and accountability in the repair sector," said Mr Camm. In addition, MTA Queensland supports the goal of reducing vehicle emissions

“WE COMMEND THE LABOR PARTY ON ITS ELECTION SUCCESS AND LOOK FORWARD TO A PRODUCTIVE PARTNERSHIP FOCUSED ON SECURING THE FUTURE OF THE AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY . . .” but emphasises the need for a balanced and practical implementation of the New Vehicle Efficiency Standard (NVES) - one that supports environmental goals without undermining the viability of automotive businesses. "MTA Queensland supports efforts to reduce vehicle emissions, but it must be implemented in a way that balances environmental responsibility with economic and practical realities on the ground," said Mr Camm. "The policy must consider the diversity of our sector - from urban dealerships to regional workshops - while supporting a sustainable path to electrification." MTA Queensland also welcomes the government’s consideration of abolishing the outdated Luxury Car Tax, which is currently under review as part of negotiations for a free trade agreement with the European Union. "The potential removal of this tax represents a significant opportunity to modernise Australia’s automotive taxation framework at a time when our industry is undergoing unprecedented technological and structural change," said Mr Camm. "We are ready to collaborate with the government to deliver practical, forwardlooking outcomes for the industry," Mr Camm continued. "With the right policy settings, we can drive innovation, grow local jobs, and ensure Australia’s automotive sector remains a powerhouse of economic and community value. May 2025 Motor Trader | 21

NATIONAL & STATE DEALER BODIES SIGN MOU

T

HE MOTOR TRADE Association of Western Australia (MTA WA), the Victorian Automotive Chamber of Commerce (VACC), and the Tasmanian Automotive Chamber of Commerce (TACC) have agreed to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Australian Automotive Dealer Association (AADA), strengthening cooperation between state, territory, and national organisations representing automotive franchised dealers. This new agreement will build on the model established earlier this year between the MTA Queensland and AADA. The MoU acknowledges MTA Queensland, MTA WA, VACC, and TACC as the peak bodies representing new car and truck dealers in their respective states and the AADA as the national peak industry body when dealing with issues of national significance. Together, they commit to coordinating policy positions, submissions, media communications, and committee representation to better serve dealers and ensure they are represented by one voice at both the state and national levels with regards to franchised new car and truck dealer issues. “This is a major step forward for dealers in the signatory states who now will benefit from one consistent voice at both the state and national level. I am looking forward to working with my colleagues in Victoria, Western Australia, Queensland and Tasmania to ensure franchised new car and truck dealers have the best possible representation,” said AADA CEO James Voortman. “This agreement represents a pivotal moment for our industry. By formalising collaboration between state and national bodies, we are strengthening our ability

“. . . MTA QUEENSLAND IS PROUD TO HAVE HELPED PIONEER THIS APPROACH AND FULLY SUPPORTS THIS EXPANDED NATIONAL ALIGNMENT.” to advocate effectively and consistently on behalf of dealers. At a time when the automotive sector is facing rapid change, unity and coordination are more important than ever. MTA Queensland is proud to have helped pioneer this approach and fully supports this expanded national alignment,” said MTA Queensland CEO Rod Camm. “Politicians respond best when they have one clear and strong voice to listen to. While the MTA WA has had a long working relationship with AADA, this MoU provides a great outcome for franchise dealers across Australia. Politicians will now receive one clear consistent message which should lead to better outcomes for our members,” said MTA WA Group CEO Stephen Moir. "This agreement strengthens our ability to advocate effectively for new car and truck dealers across Victoria and Tasmania. By working in closer coordination with AADA, we ensure our members benefit from strong representation at both state and national levels. This unified approach will deliver better outcomes for automotive retailers while maintaining our focus on the specific needs of our Victorian and Tasmanian members," said VACC CEO Peter Jones. This agreement marks a major step towards achieving a unified and coordinated national voice for franchised dealers across Australia. May 2025 Motor Trader | 23

Lara has had a long association with Springmount Raceway in Far North Queensland. A commentator for many events held at the motorsport complex, she recently became Race Director

She is particularly well known in the car enthusiast community thanks to her commentary career at automotive events. With nearly a decade behind the microphone, Lara has provided the call for the 400 Thunder drag racing series on Kayo and Fox Sports, and at innumerable shows, including major national events such as Perth's Motorvation, SummerNats in Canberra, the Red Centre NATS in Alice Springs and RockyNats in Rockhampton. Lara’s passion project is her automotive business Wilde Drive, a vehicle (excuse the pun) through which she addresses a practical yet overlooked issue: empowering everyday drivers with the knowledge to feel confident in their car. “I really want people to understand the ultimate lifestyle accessory that they have in their daily driver, and how to look after it,” she says. “As a small family, or as an individual, a $40,000 or $50,000 car is a big investment and you’ll want to know how

“AT CHRISTMAS, WHEN OTHER GIRLS GOT BARBIE DOLLS, I GOT HOT WHEELS OR, IF I DID GET BARBIE DOLLS, I’D LEAVE THEM IN THE BOX, TAKE THEM TO SCHOOL AND TRADE THEM FOR HOT WHEELS!”

to look after it so that 1: you don't lose any money, and 2: you can seek every opportunity for adventure behind the wheel. “If your kids want to go to soccer training on the other side of town, you have a safe, reliable car. If you get a job offer that's on the other side of the country, you’ll have the confidence to say yes, grab that opportunity and drive to that job. You want to be able to know that if someone in your family needs to get to the hospital in a hurry and you can’t get an ambulance, that your car is ready to go. “I've met women who have not left abusive relationships because they don't know how to put fuel in the car, and so they were thinking, ‘If I go, I don't have a car. I don’t know how to drive. I don’t know how to change a tyre. I don’t know how to look after this car to be independent. “So, my big obsession, my passion, is Wilde Drive.” Lara’s deep interest in cars and all things automotive is infectious. She has owned more vehicles than many a fleet company could boast, and every car is, she maintains, much more than just a means of getting around. Her obsession began early, fuelled by a childhood spent in remote and regional May 2025 Motor Trader | 25

Australia where a car was vital for everyday survival. “I grew up on cattle stations that were an hour or more from town and, if you wanted to have any kind of life at all, you needed a set of wheels to get there,” she says. “So, I have always been obsessed with cars. At Christmas, when other girls got Barbie dolls, I got Hot Wheels or, if I did get Barbie dolls, I’d leave them in the box, take them to school and trade them for Hot Wheels.” Having a car offered a level of independence and freedom back then, and that desire for independence has stayed with Lara to this day. It is reflected in her career, and she has powerful feelings on gender disparities in the automotive industry, particularly motorsport. She can clearly see the benefit of organisations such as Girls Torque that have been

created to help women succeed, but she paradoxically expresses frustration that such entities are necessary at all. “It's an organisation that's been around for a very long time. Personally, I hate that it exists,” she says. “At no point has anyone ever been driving a race car and thought, if only I had different genitals, I could go faster . . . It's simply that, as women, we're not raised to see this as even on a spectrum of opportunities.” Lara herself has, unfortunately, faced some of this misogynistic and patronising behaviour, including one particularly irksome moment after addressing a drivers’ briefing before a race. “One of the men came up and he literally patted me on the head and said, ‘You did a very good job there, young lady.’ I was so mad!” she recalls. “I rang the president [of Girls Torque] Bridget Bell, who does a lot

As 'the voice' of many of the great car enthusiast events held across the country, Lara has to get close to all the tyre-shredding action

Along with the trackside commentating work, Lara is sought-after to share her knowledge and experience as a guest on radio shows and podcasts and as a guest speaker at conferences of commentary also, and got the chance to vent to someone else who knew what I was doing and knew what I was going through. “And that opportunity brought home for me how important it is to have organisations like Australia's Women’s Motoring Network and Auto Women . . . We're not asking for a special race. We're not asking for the women's category or the ‘Best Woman’ trophy. We're simply asking for a network of women who have walked the walk, who can mentor, who you can vent to, and who give you that opportunity.” Lara urges women to be bold, to not shrink away from looking for and grabbing the opportunities that might present themselves in the automotive world, and to not be swayed by the pervasive idea that a woman should listen to what a bloke says when it comes to cars because, well, he’s a bloke. “The secret to success, I think, is to say ‘Yes’,” she says. “Get in the arena and then figure out the answers later. “I had no idea how to do drag racing commentary, but I said ‘yes’ and then I found some great people and put the support networks around me, I studied and did the work, and I learned. “Say ‘Yes’. That’s the secret. “And the advice I would give a young me if I could go back 40 years and start playing with cars again, is ‘Don't take it as to be

true and correct because a man said it was so.’ “Cars are not animals, they're cars! Everything is nuts and bolts and there is a very pure, simple explanation for everything on a car. “. . . Don't put faith just because someone out there tells you you're just a girl and it's too hard. And definitely don't take the first answer. If you really want that car and you really want to race it and you're willing to put in the sweat and the broken fingernails and the greasy bits to do it, follow that dream, follow that passion - don't wait for a man's permission!” Lara’s passion for cars has evolved to reach a point at which she seems to have spent much of her spare time buying, repairing, driving, enjoying, and then selling a quite diverse collection of vehicles – cars and bikes of all manner of makes and models, engine size and power, all of which were bought not particularly for practical or utilitarian purposes, but because they caught her eye in some fashion. “Throughout my life, I've owned hundreds of cars and I've never gone shopping for a car thinking I need one with this many cup holders and it must do this kind of fuel economy. “I shop for cars the same way some people shop for shoes or handbags. I adore it!” she says. May 2025 Motor Trader | 27

AUSTRALIAN DEALERS IN SHANGHAI AS CHINA TAKES CENTRE STAGE

A

UTO SHANGHAI, THE gargantuan biannual motor show held in China’s biggest city, is one of the world’s most influential automotive events and the 2025 edition, held from April 23 to May 2 at the city’s National Exhibition and Convention Centre, featured nearly 1,000 exhibitors from 26 countries and regions. Those exhibitors showcased products ranging from cars to technology items

such as autonomous driving systems, powerful sensors, software, motors and batteries, parts and accessories and everything in between. The show underscored China's apparent lead in what they call NEVs – New Energy Vehicles such as battery electric and plugin hybrids – with the majority of vehicles unveiled at the show being electrified in some way. And Auto Shanghai also

seemed to leave little doubt that Chinese manufacturers are amongst the leaders in many of the other technologies that are powering modern vehicles too. Chinese carmakers have made significant inroads in markets across the world - Australia amongst them - and Auto Shanghai did, therefore, offer a priceless opportunity to get some insight into where our local market may be headed. With that in mind, the Australian Automotive Dealer Association (AADA) led a study tour to the show – a tour that enabled delegates access to Auto Shanghai as well as private presentations from leading Chinese manufacturers; a tour of Shanghai auto dealerships; and opportunities to connect with automotive industry leaders from around the world. Amongst the tour delegation was Rod Camm, CEO of MTA Queensland. Auto Shanghai was, he said, spectacular. “The only description is it completely

And the crowds it generates are nothing short of amazing. It's absolutely sold out and people love it . . . it’s a high-quality, impressive show.” The technology demonstrated at the show suggested that Chinese manufacturers are setting the benchmark, particularly in electric vehicles (EVs), artificial intelligence, and autonomous driving technology. However, the power and ubiquity of smartphones was May 2025 Motor Trader | 31

AADA Study Tour: Auto Shanghai 2025 something carmakers had, apparently, begun to note – an observation which they shared with the AADA delegates. “They are very, very focused on the tech experience in their vehicles,” explained Rod. “I would even argue that it's more important for the younger generation than the car itself. “But they were also very open with us and, in talking to some of the OEMs, despite all the tech they put in them, a lot of people get in the car, attach their iPhone, and that's the tech they use for music. for navigation, for whatever. “As for autonomous driving, they would argue that they've got that sorted. You saw people in cars leaning back while the car drove itself along the road!” What was clear, said Rod, was that the speed of innovation in China is unmatched. “We went to an innovation summit where a guy talked to us about the motor vehicle industry there compared to the traditional manufacturers in Europe . . . and the history of a lot of manufacturers is that [innovation] is their biggest strength. But it's their weakness too because it's harder to innovate. It's harder to slash red tape. It's harder to make

They go ‘No, we are going to do it’ . . . “Also, in the cars we drive - which are largely European, Japanese, and Korean - new technology tends to be released in higher-end cars, like BMW in the Seven series, and it'll slowly trickle down. That’s not the Chinese way. If they've got a base grade car coming out and they just invented new tech, it goes in. “. . . f particular interest at Auto Shanghai was the reveal of the Nissan Frontier Pro, the company’s first foray into electrified pick-up trucks. The plug-in hybrid sits on 18-inch alloy wheels and is powered by a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine paired with an electric motor that, combined, delivers over 300kW and 800Nm of torque. The Frontier Pro offers an electric-only range of up to 135km. All models feature a 5-link rear suspension and intelligent All-Wheel Drive which automatically controls torque distribution between the front and rear wheels. Off-road capability is supported by the availability of an electromechanical rear differential lock. Inside the cabin has a panoramic roof, a 10-inch LCD instrument panel and a 14.6-inch infotainment screen. The pick-up features roof rails and an electronic retractable cover for the cargo area. The Frontier Pro is set to launch in China later this year. The company says it will be exported to other markets. May 2025 Motor Trader | 33

AADA Study Tour: Auto Shanghai 2025 “Australians are buying Chinese cars, the data shows that, and that will continue mainly because they are price competitive.” said Rod. “But they are also trying to bring their premium cars here, and it will be interesting to see how people react to that.” Political dynamics may play a role in what cars and tech get here, and when. “Dare I mention it - it’s got a lot to do with Trump,” said Rod. “If Chinese manufacturers can’t export to the U.S., they’ll export somewhere else. Australia is a likely market . . . even though we drive on the ‘wrong’ side of the car.” This potential influx of Chinese brands and vehicles does raise some concerns that needed to be considered by Government as much as by dealership groups and the wider Australian industry, suggested Rod. But for the local service and repair sector, it is vital to start preparing for the arrival of these vehicles. “Our message to the car industry, and I mean the technicians across the country, really, is to start preparing now, to skill up now,” said Rod. “Don't wait, because they are appearing and the skills you learn around battery electric are equally

applicable to hybrid vehicles which Australians are embracing . . . “In saying that, I'm a bit worried about the flood of Chinese vehicles that will come. Not because they're Chinese but because, from our discussions with them, they don’t really have a strategy on how they are going to skill technicians on their vehicles . . . there's no real strategy there, at least no transparent one anyway . . . “They'll engage with dealers and hope their techs can manage it and I don’t think that's fair on dealers. I think there has to be a strategy to help them upgrade their knowledge.” Along with the skills requirement, there were, Rod suggested, potential issues around the supply chain of parts and a need for the Australian Government to be

aware of these and other matters. “I think government has a role to play here and I am not convinced just allowing another 60 brands to turn up and start selling is good for the consumer,” said Rod. “I appreciate we want a market, but I think government has to ensure those things I mentioned earlier are part of the import. Brisbane used to host a motor show – one run, in fact, by MTA Queensland – but that came to end over a decade ago, along with many other motor shows across the world, as interest from manufacturers began to wane. However, the excitement of those who attended Auto Shanghai, along with

his own experience there and at a previous Auto China show, has made Rod ponder whether it might be time to revisit the concept. “They are exciting. Walking around them is genuinely exciting. It's really good fun, and Australian car enthusiasts would flock to it,” said Rod. “ . . . I can't believe anyone went to that show and wouldn't come back and go, ‘Why aren’t we doing it?’ And believe me, I've challenged some people about why.” Melbourne recently hosted a successful show, so perhaps a return of a proper, fullblooded motor show might be on the cards for Brisbane? NEW VEHICLE SALES REGISTER A FALL IN APRIL

A

PRIL’S NEW VEHICLE sales figures show Australians purchased 90,614 units during April, a decrease of 6.8 per cent on the same period in 2024. The latest VFACTS data from the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) also shows a sharp decline in sales of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) following the removal of the fringe benefits tax (FBT) exemption for these models at the end of March. During April, 2601 plug-in hybrids were purchased, representing 2.9 per cent of sales. This is down from 4.7 per cent of sales year to date to March 2025. “The earlier inclusion of PHEVs in the FBT exemption played a critical role in making these vehicles accessible to more Australians,” said Tony Weber, FCAI Chief Executive. In April, FCAI members reported battery electric vehicle (BEV) sales that made up 5.9 per cent of the market (5308 sales). However, data published by the Electric Vehicle Council (EVC) regarding sales for Polestar and Tesla show Tesla suffering a big drop from April 2024, with just 500 sales this year against 2077 in April 2024. Toyota was the market leader with sales of 19,380 during April, followed by Ford (7,334), Mazda (6,573), Kia (6,303) and Hyundai (5,547). The Toyota HiLux was Australia’s top selling vehicle with sales of 4,121 followed by the Ford Ranger (4,031), Toyota RAV4 (3,808), Ford Everest (2,234) and Toyota Prado (2,233). For April 2025, sales in Queensland fell 3.2 per cent on April 2024 to 20,203. In the 60 | Motor Trader May 2025

“THE EARLIER INCLUSION OF PHEVS IN THE FBT EXEMPTION PLAYED A CRITICAL ROLE IN MAKING THESE VEHICLES ACCESSIBLE TO MORE AUSTRALIANS.” ACT, sales were down 17 per cent to 1198; NSW was down 7.5 per cent to 27,071; Northern Territory decreased by 2.4 per cent to 838; South Australia was down by 13.6 per cent to 5864; Tasmania had a decrease of 18.5 per cent to 1366; Victoria was down 7.9 per cent to 24,410 and Western Australia decreased 1.4 per cent to 9,664. The Passenger Vehicle Market is down by 4741 vehicle sales (-27.4 per cent) over the same month last year; the Sports Utility Market is up by 44 vehicle sales (0.1 per cent); the Light Commercial Market is down by 990 vehicle sales (-4.6 per cent) and the Heavy Commercial Vehicle Market is down by 901 vehicle sales (-20.8 per cent) versus April 2024.

MTA Institute News

W

ELL, APRIL WHIZZED by with all the public holidays and short weeks now a distant memory. While April was MARCELLO RIOTTO a short month, DIRECTOR, MTA INSTITUTE there was plenty of activity both here at the institute and in the field with our trainers. We were able to receive delivery of the majority of the new training equipment mentioned last month. Installation was a mammoth task with some significant reconfiguring of the workshop required to accommodate the 3D-wheel aligner and hoists. The ADAS equipment slotted in perfectly into our 'tech hub' that’s located outside of the main workshop and houses all of our high-end training courses and equipment. While it’s great to receive all this new gear, training featured heavily on the new products and was facilitated by Nexion Automotive Group (Corghi’s) Italian trainers over a one-week period. Around a half-a-dozen MTA Institute trainers participated in this specialised training and while they are seasoned trainers, they all picked up plenty of new knowledge, tips and tricks and it served as a refresher on some previously covered topics. The intent now is for trainers who participated in this advanced training to train the other 40+ trainers who will then pass that knowledge onto the 2500+ apprentices we look after. Quite a considerable exchange of knowledge! The exchange of skills and knowledge is MTA Institute's primary responsibility - a task made possible by our outstanding trainers who tirelessly give their all, day

MACKAY STUDENTS GET A TASTE OF THE INDUSTRY WITH AUTO READY COURSE AND CAREERS EXPO

T

HE MTA INSTITUTE’S Auto Ready program returned to Mackay in April, with the nationally accredited five-day automotive introductory course for Year 10 to 12 high school students held for the second time at McCarthy Panel Works in North Mackay. The Auto Ready course includes units from the AUR20720 Certificate II in Automotive Vocational Preparation and covers the use and maintenance of tools, and the identification of mechanical and electrical systems in light vehicles. Completion of the course provides students with credit towards the full AUR20720 – Certificate II in Automotive Preparation qualification and one QCE point. Always a popular course, no matter where it is held, 10 students took part in this edition of Auto Ready with training overseen by MTA Institute senior trainer Gareth Hartley. Gareth, who was named VET Trainer

of the Year for the Central Queensland region at the 2024 Queensland Training Awards, has delivered a number of these courses and said he was encouraged by the enthusiasm of young people to get handson and discover if automotive was a career they wanted to pursue. “The 10 students on this Auto Ready program were very keen and even though some were shy to start with, they all got on well together,” said Gareth. “Young people need to experience the trades,” he added. “This course gives them the chance to see what automotive can offer, and if they attend for a week and find it is not for them, they will still have gained three units of qualification. If they find it is something they enjoy, then it is a great first step into the industry. “For the employers, it puts a spotlight on potential candidates who have proven that they are keen to learn and have a basic understanding of the automotive trades.”

The McCarthy Panel Works Careers Expo saw many young people meet and find out more about the industry from local automotive businesses.

While the week-long Auto Ready course was running, McCarthy Panel Works also hosted a Careers Expo – an initiative that business owner Andrea McCarthy first launched in 2023. The Expo, which is open to any young person curious to find out more about the automotive industry, brought local businesses together to share information about their work and trades, the technologies they use, and the opportunities and career options available. As it was two years ago, the 2025 edition of the expo proved to be extremely popular drawing around 70 students, parents, May 2025 Motor Trader | 67

All the suppliers at this year’s expo were also represented in 2023 and they included car dealership Autocorner, Treadwell Tyre Service, North Jacklin Motor Group, ADAS Calibration Centre, Glasurit and Snap-On, amongst others. MAS National – which provides apprenticeship support services to prospective and current apprentices and their employers – was also on site. There was strong engagement throughout the event, with students asking about apprenticeships, pathways, and future career opportunities. Parents were particularly interested in job stability and long-term growth in the industry.

For Andrea - who as well as running McCarthy Panel Works is currently a Board member of MTA Queensland and Chair of the Association’s National Auto Collision Alliance committee –encouraging this sort of interaction, as well as potentially pairing young people and businesses together, is the aim of the expo. “My objective was to bring students interested in automotive together with businesses looking to employ people, and to create and raise awareness for teachers and parents that automotive career pathways not only exist but are real viable options,” she said. There was plenty going on for parents and students to check out. As well as business representatives being ready to field any questions, there were activities in which they could participate, and plenty of

WRX that created a buzz, and students enjoyed the activities which included colour matching lids from sample colour swatches provided by BASF and Wholesale Paints. We also had the cold dent pull where attendees could hit a panel, create a dent and have a go at pulling the dent out under the instruction of two of my apprentices.” Attendees could also find out more about Advanced Driver Assistance Systems - or ADAS - with representatives on hand from ADAS Calibration Centre to explain how radars and sensors work and how they had become so important to modern vehicles. Snap-On, meanwhile, had an equipment and tool truck on site to highlight its products; Autocorner brought a new Hilux for attendees to view, while Protector Auto Glass supplied a Tesla for display. MTA Queensland, led by Deputy CEO Kellie Dewar, was represented too, bringing along some Virtual Reality technology for students to try out. The Auto Ready students were present with their trainer Gareth who, along with a handful of invited guests, addressed attendees, giving insight into what training for a career in automotive entails and what fantastic opportunities lay ahead should they take that path. Apprentice of the Month: April 2025

The MTA Institute Apprentice of the Month is proudly sponsored by CareSuper

APPRENTICE: AIDEN GALLACHER WORKPLACE: TRANSPORT FOR BRISBANE APPRENTICESHIP: HEAVY COMMERCIAL VEHICLE

A

IDEN GALLACHER HAS been named the MTA Institute’s Apprentice of the Month for April 2025. The 23-year-old recently completed his Heavy Commercial Vehicle apprenticeship and has stepped into a full-time role as a technician at the Sherwood Bus Depot, one of Brisbane City Council’s major bus hubs. Aiden began his apprenticeship journey in 2021 with Transport for Brisbane, the division of Brisbane City Council responsible for delivering public transport services. His supervisors quickly recognised his exceptional work ethic, attention to detail, and consistently high standards—traits that his MTA Institute trainer, David Easten, also saw. “He’s a standout apprentice who consistently performs at a level well above expectations,” said David when nominating Aiden for the Apprentice of the Month award. For Aiden, a career in the heavy vehicle sector was always the career choice. With his father being a heavy vehicle mechanic and his mother a bus driver, the commercial transport industry felt like a natural fit. To prepare, Aiden undertook a 10-week pre-vocational course with TAFE, which included four weeks of work experience split between Brisbane Council’s Sherwood and Willawong depots—each home to 200 of Brisbane’s 1200-strong bus fleet. The experience paved the way for his apprenticeship at the Willawong depot and now, four years later, Aiden is working as a tech, full time, at Sherwood. Working for Transport for Brisbane has, Aiden said, been very positive. The workshops are always busy and the work incredibly varied – something he enjoys immensely. Anything from a regular service to a major fix can roll Aiden’s way. “We do checks every 40,000km and do other work that is booked in—like steering components or air bags—and breakdown jobs like coolant leaks and no-start issues,” said Aiden.

72 | Motor Trader May 2025

“I did have to do a whole rear axle swap,” he added when asked what sort of major jobs have come his way. “I had two buses on hoists and had to take the diff centres out and the whole axle housing out of those buses.” It’s not just the technical work that drives Aiden. The mateship in the workshop is a major part of what makes the job enjoyable. “Everyone is there to help each other,” he said. And that is an aspect of his job that Aiden takes pretty seriously, offering plenty of support to other apprentices. Now freshly qualified, his experience of getting through his training is something he can share. “I understand the struggles they are going to have,” he said. “Older tradespeople have been qualified for 10 or 20 years. I’ve just finished and can help them with the steps I’ve just had to do. I can help them get evidence and I know what jobs they need to do . . . It’s rewarding seeing them learn.” Public transport is often an early adopter of low- and zero-emission technologies and there are plenty of electric buses in Brisbane’s fleet. Transport for Brisbane offers career development opportunities for its apprentices and tradespeople through ongoing training, including electric vehicle training. While Aiden has yet to do specific high-voltage training, it is something he will do down the track. “They have a lot of electric buses now and have just finished building a fully electric depot at Rochedale,” he said. “. . . It’s only a matter of time before we have to go electric. It’s inevitable, and being dual-qualified would be nice!” Working in the heavy vehicle sector was always something Aiden wanted to do and now he is qualified he has ideas on what steps he may take in his career and what experiences he would like to have in the sector. “Council has been a great employer but in a few years I’d like to try go to the mines and give that a go; work on hydraulic systems and bigger and heavier equipment like diggers and excavators and so on; and work overseas too and get more experience under my belt,” he said. With a clear passion for the trade and a drive to continue learning and help the next generation of apprentices be successful, Aiden is a terrific ambassador for the industry.

MTAI INVESTS IN CUTTINGEDGE TECH & EQUIPMENT FOR TRAINING FACILITY

T

HE MTA INSTITUTE, Queensland’s largest private provider of automotive apprenticeships and training, is investing in a major upgrade of its Brisbane-based workshop. The upgrades are designed to keep the facility at the leading edge of training demands as the automotive industry continues to evolve, and enhancements include the installation of state-of-the-art equipment from the Nexion Group and its brands Corghi and Molnar. Amongst that equipment are the latest wheel alignment and tyre changing systems, new hoists specifically designed for work with high-voltage electric vehicle (EVs), new hoists for internal combustion engine vehicles, and the PROADAS Advanced Driver Assistance System 78 | Motor Trader May 2025

According to Steve Hudspith, Training Operations Manager at the MTA Institute, the investment in upgrading and acquiring new equipment would ensure the MTA Institute remains the leading provider of automotive training in Queensland. “With the addition of the Corghi Exact Precision Wheel Alignment machine we will soon be introducing advanced Wheel Alignment training to our apprentices and for industry short courses,” he said. “The addition of the EVspecific hoist will allow us to expand our EV training, while partnering with Nexion, Molnar and Corghi to have them rotate their latest technology through the workshop will help keep us at the forefront of tyre equipment technology. “Future changes will include updating our training classrooms with the latest in interactive TVs, placing 80-inch displays in the main workshop

training space and creating a technology hub specifically for more technical and detailed ADAS and EV training.” The purchasing and installation of the Corghi wheel alignment and PROADAS system was followed by the delivery of three days of training for MTA Institute’s team, with Corghi flying in their own expert from Italy - and the company’s training school in Correggio - to bring the Institute’s trainers up to speed. “Keeping our training resources up to date isn’t just important, it is essential,”

“WE ARE LUCKY THAT BECAUSE MTA QUEENSLAND WORKS SO CLOSELY WITH INDUSTRY ON A DAILY BASIS, IT ALLOWS US TO REALLY KEEP OUR FINGER ON THE PULSE AND BE PROACTIVE RATHER THAN REACTIVE TO THE TRAINING REQUIREMENTS OF OUR INDUSTRY.” said Steve. “Ensuring our trainers, equipment, and curriculum reflect the latest advancements is critical to delivering outcomes that meet real-world industry needs. Electrified vehicles are becoming the norm in current apprentice training plans and ADAS systems will soon follow. “We are lucky that because MTA Queensland works so closely with industry on a daily basis, it allows us to really keep our finger on the pulse and be proactive rather than reactive to the training 80 | Motor Trader May 2025

requirements of our industry.” The decision to upgrade the MTA Institute workshop and its resources dovetails with the goals of MTA Queensland to always offer the very best services to its members, to industry and to students. “We built this training centre 12 years ago and a lot has changed in that time,” said Steve. “We have grown significantly, and technology has changed substantially too. These updates and upgrades will ensure we can maintain quality apprentice training and also deliver next-level, postapprenticeship training to industry.”
