ELLO AND WELCOME to the April 2025 edition of Motor Trader. It has been another busy month - locally and internationally - for the automotive industry with some big economic moves having taken place that will affect the sector. The Federal Budget was handed down on March 25 and, in the U.S., President Trump decided to slap tariffs on just about every country across the globe. His administration singled out the automotive industry too, placing a 25 per cent tariff on vehicle and parts imports. It's all rather startling and it seems unlikely that the

MTA QUEENSLAND WELCOMES FEDERAL BUDGET, BUT MORE WORK NEEDED

HE AUSTRALIAN GOVERNMENT'S 2025-26 Budget, delivered by Treasurer Jim Chalmers on 25 March 2025 outlines several initiatives impacting both MTA Queensland member businesses and the broader automotive industry. MTA Queensland particularly welcomes the Budget’s measures to extend protections from unfair trading practices and unfair contract terms to all automotive franchised new vehicle dealers. These changes aim to address the power imbalance between dealers and vehicle manufacturers. Additionally, the Government’s commitment of $7.1 million over two years to strengthen the ACCC’s enforcement of the Franchising Code of Conduct is a positive step forward. These measures come at a crucial time for the Australian automotive industry. Just last week, Holden dealers lost their class action against General Motors over the company's decision to exit the Australian market. This setback, compounded by Mercedes-Benz dealers

“THIS BUDGET ANNOUNCEMENT IS A MAJOR WIN FOR OUR INDUSTRY. IT PROVIDES OUR MEMBERS WITH GREATER CONFIDENCE TO INVEST IN THE FUTURE . . .” challenging the company’s attempt to alter its longstanding Australian business model, highlights the ongoing challenges facing franchised dealers. “This Budget announcement is a major
win for our industry. It provides our members with greater confidence to invest in the future, ensuring they can continue delivering the vehicles Australian consumers love, while also adapting to new brands in an increasingly competitive market,” said MTA Queensland CEO, Rod Camm. MTA Queensland also welcomes the Budget’s additional support for small and medium businesses, including energy bill relief, energy efficiency grants, and enhanced digital and cyber solutions. “These initiatives are vital for helping businesses navigate the ongoing challenges of rising operational costs, particularly in the energy sector. The energy bill relief, which will assist small businesses in managing their energy expenses, will ease the pressure on cash flow and ensure businesses can focus on growth and innovation.” In contrast to the support provided to various sectors, this Budget highlights the persistent strain on Australian drivers through outdated automotive taxes such as the Luxury Car Tax and Passenger Vehicle Tariff. These taxes continue to
impose unnecessary financial burdens, particularly on consumers who choose vehicles that are more fuelefficient, environmentally friendly, or equipped with advanced safety technologies. “This is an outdated policy that fails to align with the Government's goals of reducing emissions and enhancing road safety. The Luxury Car Tax was introduced when Australia had a domestic vehicle manufacturing industry, but it no longer serves its original purpose. Today, it unfairly penalises consumers who opt for vehicles that are more energy-efficient and better equipped to enhance driver and passenger safety,” said Camm. As the voice of the automotive industry, MTA Queensland remains committed to advocating on behalf of our members, driving positive change, and working towards a prosperous future for the sector. We will continue to work with the Government for necessary reforms and ensure that the needs of our industry are heard.
2025-2026 FEDERAL BUDGET BRIEF SMALL AND MEDIUM BUSINESS ANNOUNCEMENTS Energy Bill Relief for Small Businesses From 1 July 2025, around one million eligible small businesses will receive $75 per quarter off their energy bills in the September and December quarters, with the Government committing around $1.8 billion to extend energy bill relief for six months. Over the last three budgets, energy bill relief has reduced small business energy bills by up to $800.
Energy Efficiency Grants The Government is providing $56.7 million in grants through the Energy Efficiency Grants for Small and Medium Sized Enterprises program, delivered over two funding rounds. The program assists businesses with grants of up to $25,000 to manage their energy use and costs and improve their energy efficiency through a range of upgrades such as replacing inefficient appliances and improving space and water heating systems. April 2025 Motor Trader | 7
Digital and Cyber Since the 2023–24 Budget, the Government has invested more than $60 million to help small businesses uplift their cyber security and digital capabilities through the Digital Solutions program, Cyber Wardens program, Cyber Resilience Service and the Cyber Health Check. Together, these programs help small businesses adopt digital tools and grasp the opportunities that going online offers, while supporting small businesses to prevent and bounce back from cyber incidents.
TO DELIVER A BETTER DEAL FOR THOUSANDS OF SMALL BUSINESSES IN THE FRANCHISING SECTOR, THE GOVERNMENT IS PROVIDING $7.1 MILLION OVER TWO YEARS TO STRENGTHEN THE ACCC’S ENFORCEMENT OF THE FRANCHISING CODE.
AUTOMOTIVE SECTOR ANNOUNCEMENTS
This builds on the $188.5 million investment over four years from 2023–24 for Australian Border Force to deliver a coordinated multi-agency, multi-jurisdictional compliance response to illicit tobacco trade. Subsidised Training Over the next decade, nine out of ten new jobs will require post-secondary qualifications and almost half will come through VET pathways. The Government is delivering free training to deliver access to vocational training opportunities. The Government is committing to 100,000 permanent free TAFE places every year from 1 January 2027, subject to the passage of relevant legislation. Hydrogen and Clean Energy This Budget builds on the Government’s existing $22.7 billion Future Made in Australia agenda. Since the Mid-Year Economic and Fiscal Outlook, the Government has progressed a broad range of initiatives aligned with the Future Made in Australia agenda. This includes allocating $13.7 billion to hydrogen and critical minerals production tax incentives and an additional $2 billion to the Clean Energy Finance Corporation to continue mobilising critical private investment into renewable energy, energy efficiency and low emissions technologies. The Government has announced
Franchise Code of Conduct Changes Impacted sectors: new vehicle dealers, including motorcycle and farm machinery. The Government will work with states and territories on extending Unfair Trading Practice protections to small businesses. Small businesses can have a power imbalance when dealing with large businesses, and the Government will consult on how introducing these protections can help level the playing field. To deliver a better deal for thousands of small businesses in the franchising sector, the Government is providing $7.1 million over two years to strengthen the ACCC’s enforcement of the Franchising Code. The Government will extend protections from Unfair Contract Terms and Unfair Trading Practices to businesses regulated by the Franchising Code, including new vehicle dealerships. Illicit Tobacco Compliance and Enforcement Package Impacted sectors: service station and convenience store members The Government will commit $156.7 million in program funding to support the Illicit Tobacco Compliance and Enforcement Package focused on sustained disruption of the illicit trade in tobacco and associated nicotine products. 8 | Motor Trader April 2025
2025–26 to increase the Disability Australian Apprentice Wage Support subsidy • $7.0 million over four years from 2025–26 to increase the Living Away From Home Allowance.
ANNOUNCEMENTS ALREADY MADE:
priority sector funding allocations from the $1.5 billion Future Made in Australia Innovation Fund. This includes $500 million for clean energy technology manufacturing capabilities including electrolysers, batteries and wind towers and $250 million for low carbon liquid fuels.
SKILLS & TRAINING The Government will provide $722.8 million over four years from 2025–26 to deliver increased support for apprentices. Funding includes: • $626.9 million over four years from 2025–26 to reframe the New Energy Apprenticeships Program as the Key Apprenticeship Program • $77.8 million over four years from 2025–26 to extend the current interim Australian Apprenticeship Incentive System program settings for a further six months from 1 July 2025 to 31 December 2025 • $11.0 million over four years from
DRIVEN Charger Rebate Stream Impacted sectors: car dealerships and EV repairers The DRIVEN Charger Rebate Stream grant opportunity will provide $40 million for EV chargers to car dealerships and EV repairers. Eligible businesses can receive up to $2,500 per eligible smart EV charger that has been purchased and installed on their site. Multiple EV chargers can be claimed, up to an amount of $20,000. Find out more HERE. New Vehicle Efficiency Standard • Ongoing $84.5 million ( from 2024-25) for emissions compliance and credit training. • $50 million for clean energy training, such as EV mechanics (continued).
WHAT’S NOT IN THE BUDGET? Changes to the Luxury Car Tax and Passenger Vehicle Tariff In contrast to the support provided to various sectors, this Budget underscores the ongoing burden on Australian drivers through outdated automotive taxes like the Luxury Car Tax and Passenger Vehicle Tariff. The Government is expected to collect nearly $1.55 billion from these taxes alone in the current financial year. These taxes remain a significant financial pressure on consumers, especially when applied to vehicles that are more efficient or equipped with advanced safety features. April 2025 Motor Trader | 9

MTA |Q&A
Surrounded by sugarcane fields as far as the eye can see is the Tully branch of Spearman Diesel Fitting Pty Ltd. Owners Haulana and Stephen - best known as ‘Spear’ - operate the thriving business with their two daughters and a team of happy, easy-going staff. Motor Trader dropped in to learn the key to their success. WORDS & IMAGES: LARA WILDE 10 | Motor Trader April 2025
THANK YOU FOR INVITING US INTO YOUR WORKSHOP SPEAR. TELL US ABOUT YOUR BACKGROUND IN THE INDUSTRY. SS: Born and bred in Tully, I grew up
surrounded by sugarcane in this Far North Queensland paradise. My dad George had the longest-operating cane harvesting business in Tully, so I grew up fixing and working on diesel farming machines. I love living here with pristine beaches just down the road, a thriving community and the best farmers in the world. In 1994, I started my trade as a diesel fitter and worked locally on the sugarcane harvests with Dad’s business and helping

As we entered the new century, I seized an opportunity to work in Florida for the cane harvesting season there and for 10 harvest seasons I would spend six months in the United States for their cane harvest and then come home to Queensland to work the harvest here. . MTA | Q&A
WHEN DID YOU OPEN THE DOORS ON SPEARMAN DIESEL FITTING? SS: In 2005, I did my last season in our
cane harvesting business and in 2008 I did my last season in Florida. The slab for the main workshop in Tully was poured in 2012 and we began operating. Having grown up here in the Tully region, we had a great start in the business as so many friends and customers knew me and my standard of work. Since then, it has grown from strength to strength.
TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THE BUSINESS THAT HAS EVOLVED HERE SINCE YOU OPENED IN 2012? SS: We provide mobile services to locals in the Far North Queensland region. There are two fully equipped workshops - one in Tolga on the Atherton Tablelands and another here in Tully in the heart of sugarcane country. We also have a 12m truck pit and a large range of diagnostic equipment to test everything from the electrical system of a brand-new DeutzFahr tractor through to the output of a very old PTO dyno.

the work done in time. From a mechanical point of view, Deutz-Fahr and Versatile tractors are a very reliable and tough workhorse machine with plenty of power to the ground, but they are still economical with fuel.
WHAT PRODUCTS ARE YOU MOST PROUD TO WORK WITH? WHAT DO YOU SEE AS THE GREATEST ADVANCEMENT SS: We only stock brands that we trust. IN TECHNOLOGY FOR YOUR BUSINESS? When harvest is on, it is critical that our SS: The greatest advancement in clients can rely on their machines to get technology for our business is having various diagnostic tooling. We have a lot of them as we work on every brand of machinery and equipment. When I first started in my trade in the mid-1990s, if there was a problem with a tractor in the paddock you would have to look up the solution in a manual or drive back to the office to ring the dealer.
WHAT ARE YOUR GREATEST CHALLENGES? SS: Our greatest challenge is getting
through the large workload we have every day! We employ great tradesmen and apprentices, and they have a great work ethic and are the very best. We provide them with technical diagnostic tool training and tractor schooling in Brisbane April 2025 Motor Trader | 13

HOW AN EV CAN BE YOUR HOME’S BACKUP GENERATOR ONE SUCH PIECE OF TECH IS THE B VEHICLE-TO-LOAD (V2L) FEATURE - A ATTERY-ELECTRIC VEHICLES (BEVS) are revolutionising the automotive industry, but beyond offering owners a fossil fuel-free, smooth and responsive, good-for-the-environment driving experience, BEVs are equipped with some very nifty technologies that truly enhance their functionality. One such piece of tech is Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) - a technology that enables electric vehicles to supply power to external electrical devices. Essentially, it transforms an EV into a mobile power station and it operates by converting the direct current (DC) stored in the vehicle's battery into alternating current (AC), which is the standard form of electricity used by most household appliances. Users can access this power through standard power outlets located within the vehicle or via specialised adapters that connect to the vehicle's charging port. Currently (excuse the pun), the power output capacity varies among different EV models, but typically ranged from 2.2kW to 3.6kW, sufficient to run several household appliances simultaneously. It has escaped no one's notice that such functionality could prove particularly valuable in regions prone to natural disasters that can disrupt the power

TECHNOLOGY THAT ENABLES ELECTRIC VEHICLES TO SUPPLY POWER FROM THEIR HIGH-CAPACITY BATTERIES TO EXTERNAL ELECTRICAL DEVICES.
supply, and there are EV owners in Queensland - particularly badly hit this year by extreme weather events - that have used their cars in just this way. Graeme Mason is one such owner. The 71-year-old lives with his family in Miami, a suburb of the Gold Coast, and is the former Queensland Sales Manager for motorcycle accessories company Cassons. He now works part-time in the sector and, for the past two years, has been the very contented owner of a BYD Atto 3 – a Premium model fitted with the 60.4kWh battery pack. Like everyone else in southeast Queensland, Graeme was somewhat on edge the first week of March as Cyclone Alfred snaked slowly toward the region. Also just like everyone else, Graeme and his family stocked up on supplies from the supermarket.
Graeme Mason with his BYD Atto 3 which he used to power a range of home appliances during a lengthy power outage when Cyclone Alfred hit southeast Queensland. However, what Graeme didn’t need to do was to join the crush of people who were, understandably, raiding hardware and power equipment stores across the region looking for generators. “We had been warned that we would likely lose power,” said Graeme. “I have a charger at the house, so I charged the car up to 100 per cent at the beginning of the week. On the Thursday we were being told to expect power blackouts and, after a few little trips, we still had 95 per cent charge in the car by Friday morning when the power went out.” It would be 72 hours before mains power would return and during those three days Graeme and his family were able to enjoy something close to a regular
existence. With a barbeque being used for cooking, the Atto 3 provided more than enough grunt to run a range of other household items. Graeme was even able to offer a helping hand to neighbours. “I plugged the V2L lead into the car and

that has a power board on the end into which I plugged a 25m extension cord with four outlets,” said Graeme. “I rolled that into the house, plugged in the fridge, a separate freezer and a radio, and then we alternated between the coffee machine, toaster, and kettle. We were able to help out our neighbours too and they brought over their frozen food which we were able to store. “We also ran a TV and DVD player as we get our shows from over the internet and we were without that.” With the benefit of hindsight, Graeme said that he would have been less conservative and run more items. “That first day I was out at the car every two hours to see how much charge was left,” he said with a laugh. “But it was only a few per cent each day, and I know now that if this ever happens again, we can run some lighting and everything else off it. It only used 32 per cent in those 72 hours, which is remarkable.”
“. . . IT WAS ONLY A FEW PER CENT EACH DAY, AND I KNOW NOW THAT IF THIS EVER HAPPENS AGAIN, WE CAN RUN SOME LIGHTING AND EVERYTHING ELSE OFF IT. IT ONLY USED 32 PER CENT IN THOSE 72 HOURS, WHICH IS REMARKABLE.” The ability of the Atto 3 to deliver backup power was one of the reasons Graeme was intrigued by the model when he went looking to buy the family’s first EV back in November of 2023. It wasn’t the main reason he bought it, but it did play a part in his decision. “I had read a lot about the Atto 3. Everyone who had tested it said it was a great car and, at the time, the Queensland Government were giving a $6000 rebate on EVs,” he said. “I had also read about a lady 18 | Motor Trader April 2025
on Mount Tamborine who, when the Gold Coast was hit by a sort of mini cyclone a couple of Christmases ago, had run her son’s dialysis machine off her Atto 3. I just thought that was a great idea.” Using $3000 of that $6000 rebate to install a charging system at his home left Graeme ready to go, and there’s no hiding how pleased he is with how things have gone - not least because of the cost of running the EV. “My wife does 300km a week in it and it costs us nothing! We plug it in for a few hours every Sunday and it’s back to 100 per cent and ready to go,” said Graeme. “It had its first service a little while ago and it cost $168. Crazy cheap!” It should come as no surprise that, when asked whether he would recommend an Atto 3 - or any EV with the V2L function – Graeme is unreserved in his enthusiasm. “I’ve told this story to a couple of people where I work, and they said, ‘We thought about buying one,’ and I said, ‘Stop thinking. Just buy it’!” he said with a laugh. There are several EVs available that offer V2L functionality and it is becoming a more common, even expected, feature that one can only assume will be the norm. But the capability afforded to EVs
Vehicle-to-Home (V2H) and Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) technologies are being developed that will enable EVs to power entire homes and put power back into the electricity grid. through electrification doesn’t stop at V2L. Other functions, such as Vehicle-to-Home (V2H) technology and Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) technology are being actively developed. V2H takes V2L to the next level, allowing EV owners to plug their entire home into their car rather than individual items. Modern EVs with large batteries (60–100 kWh+) could power an entire household. V2G technology, meanwhile, allows EVs to both draw power from the electricity grid and send stored energy back into it. In one scenario, this would allow the EV to charge when demand is low and discharge back to the grid during periods of high demand. A win-win situation. V2H and V2G functionality will be here and available sooner rather than later. In November 2024, the federal government
“MY WIFE DOES 300KM A WEEK IN IT AND IT COSTS US NOTHING! WE PLUG IT IN FOR A FEW HOURS EVERY SUNDAY AND IT’S BACK TO 100 PERCENT AND READY TO GO . . .”
introduced new standards for V2H and V2G charging, and in February, the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) released the National Roadmap for Bidirectional Electric Vehicle Charging. This is designed to provide a strategic framework for industry and government stakeholders to establish policies and initiatives that promote the adoption of bidirectional charging. There are already projects underway that are looking at V2G. ARENA has funded projects such as the Realising Electric Vehicle-to-Grid Services initiative, which involved deploying 51 bidirectional chargers and EVs in the ACT to demonstrate V2G capabilities. Electrification has seen vehicles become quite amazing machines and the technology has advanced to such a degree that the humble car is now not only a means of transportation, but also a mobile battery that can power all manner of products; a potent home generator that can run an entire home for days on end; and a communication, information and entertainment hub that is always connected. We live, and work, in extraordinary times. April 2025 Motor Trader | 19
LAWS PROTECTING AGAINST HARASSMENT
A positive duty already exists under model WHS laws for employers to ensure
RECENT MEDIA STORIES about what June be happening in some parliamentarian’s offices is a reminder to all employers and business owners that no-one is immune from a sexual harassment claim. The Fair Work Act and Regulations will soon be amended to give employers more power to sack perpetrators of sexual harassment. The Federal Government has announced it will amend section 387 of the Act to clarify that sexual harassment can be a valid reason for termination when determining whether a dismissal was unfair. It will also amend the definition of “serious misconduct” in the Fair Work Regulations to include sexual harassment, to clarify that this behaviour can justify summary dismissal. In addition, education and guidance on unfair dismissal and other workplace rights will be updated. The Act will include a ‘stop sexual harassment order’ by clarifying that a stop-bullying order is available in the context of harassment.

MTAA ANNOUNCES CEO TRANSITION MOVE
T
HE MOTOR TRADES Association of Australia (MTAA) has announced a restructure of its operations and role of CEO to position the association for the future and enhance its capacity to influence policy and regulatory outcomes. In line with this direction, Matt Hobbs and the MTAA Board have mutually agreed that the time is right for Matt Hobbs to step down from his role as Chief Executive Officer, with his tenure concluding on 11 April 2025. The MTAA acknowledges Matt’s dedication, leadership, and contributions to the organisation and the broader automotive industry Rod Camm and expresses its sincere appreciation for his efforts. During his time as CEO, Matt has played a vital role in advocating for key industry reforms and support packages for industry, including the New Vehicle Efficiency Standard (NVES) and the Motor Vehicle Insurance and Repair Industry Code of Conduct (the Code), championing the interests of motor trades businesses across Australia, and reinforcing the MTAA’s position as a leading industry voice. Frank Agostino, Chair of MTAA, expressed appreciation for Matt’s contributions: “Matt has been a passionate advocate for the automotive sector, leading vital industry discussions and representing the interests of our members with professionalism and dedication. We thank him for his tireless efforts and wish him every success in his future endeavours.” The MTAA, alongside all of its member associations - MTA QLD, MTA NSW, MTA WA, MTA SA/NT and the VACC/
TACC - remains committed to the ongoing success of the organisation and the automotive sector. This transition presents an opportunity to further strengthen our collaborative approach, ensuring that key industry voices are well-aligned to maximise impact and advocacy efforts. Looking ahead, the MTAA will continue to prioritise key industry initiatives, particularly the ongoing development of the Code, the Franchising Code of Conduct, and the NVES. Ensuring that these regulatory frameworks are designed effectively to support the long-term success and sustainability of businesses within the sector remains of the utmost importance. In the coming weeks, the MTAA will be engaging closely with relevant government and industry committees to drive these discussions forward. To ensure continuity and stability during this transition period, Rod Camm, current CEO of MTA Queensland, has been appointed as Interim CEO of MTAA. Rod brings a wealth of experience and a deep understanding of the automotive industry, and his leadership will ensure that the organisation remains focused on delivering critical industry outcomes while a permanent appointment is considered. The MTAA Board and its member associations reaffirm their commitment to advocating for the interests of the automotive sector and strengthening the industry’s collective voice in Australia. Further updates regarding the leadership transition will be provided in due course. April 2025 Motor Trader | 21
MTA QUEENSLAND WELCOMES FEDERAL REFORMS STRENGTHENING AUTOMOTIVE FRANCHISING PROTECTIONS
M
TA QUEENSLAND HAS welcomed the Federal Government’s recent decision to reinforce the Franchising Code of Conduct, alongside increased funding to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) for stricter enforcement. The announcement comes after sustained advocacy efforts by MTA Queensland and its industry partner, the Australian Automotive Dealer Association (AADA), both of whom have long campaigned for stronger protections against unfair contract terms and trading practices for businesses under the Code, including automotive dealerships and repairers. With the automotive sector undergoing significant transformation driven by new technologies and evolving business models, these reforms will play a critical

“DEALERS DESERVE FAIR TREATMENT, REASONABLE CONTRACTUAL TERMS, AND THE ABILITY TO MAKE BUSINESS DECISIONS WITH CONFIDENCE. THESE REFORMS ARE A DIRECT RESPONSE TO THAT NEED.” role in levelling the playing field for dealers. The strengthened Code provides dealerships with greater certainty and confidence to make informed business decisions. Rod Camm, CEO of MTA Queensland, expressed strong support for the reforms, recognising them as an important step in addressing the long-standing power imbalance between automotive dealers and the global manufacturers to which they are franchised.
“Today’s announcement is a major win for the Australian automotive industry,” said Mr Camm. “The Government’s commitment to fairness and accountability will provide essential protections for automotive businesses, ensuring they are no longer disadvantaged when competing against large multinational corporations. These reforms will restore balance and lay a solid foundation for local businesses to flourish. “The exit of Holden from the Australian market, combined with ongoing legal battles between dealers and manufacturers such as Honda and Mercedes-Benz, has highlighted the urgent need for stronger protections,” he continued. “Dealers deserve fair treatment, reasonable contractual terms, and the ability to make business decisions with confidence. These reforms are a direct response to that need.” Mr Camm also emphasised the importance of bipartisan support to ensure the reforms’ long-term success. “For the automotive sector to thrive, certainty and stability are crucial. Businesses must have the confidence that consistent, long-term policy will be in place to support their investment. MTA Queensland urges all political parties to support these reforms, ensuring a strong and sustainable future for the industry.” The reforms extend beyond franchising,
marking part of a broader initiative aimed at rectifying systemic power imbalances within the automotive industry. Government backing ensures Australian businesses can compete fairly on a global scale, signifying a pivotal development for both the sector and the future of Australian businesses. Additionally, MTA Queensland strongly endorses the Government’s decision to fast-track the review of the New Vehicle Efficiency Standard (NVES) compliance point. Shifting compliance from the point of import to the point of sale will prevent manufacturers from unloading excess stock to meet NVES targets, thereby ensuring dealers are not unfairly burdened with unsold inventory. “Shifting emissions compliance to the point of sale is a positive and necessary step,” said Mr Camm. “It ensures dealers aren’t pressured to accept excess stock, allowing them to operate in a financially sustainable way. This change will benefit both dealers and consumers by fostering more responsible business practices.” Collectively, these crucial reforms will enhance the competitiveness of Australian automotive businesses, shield them from unfair market practices, and encourage greater industry investment—laying the groundwork for a sustainable, resilient automotive sector well into the future. ASSISTANCE AVAILABLE FOR BUSINESSES & COMMUNITIES STRUCK BY FLOODING
T
HE EXTRAORDINARY WEATHER events that have struck Queensland since the beginning of 2025 have, sadly, continued. North Queensland continues to reel under the weight of epic rainfall and flooding with communities including Townsville, Winton, and surrounding areas continuing to be significantly affected by events that seems unending. In recent weeks, and after the brief and, it would seem, less-destructivethan-expected landfall of Cyclone Alfred in the southeast, it is now the west and southwest of Queensland that is staggering from near-biblical rainfall and flooding. Flooding has spanned an area approximately twice the size of Victoria and southwest Queensland towns such as Thargomindah, Quilpie, and Eulo have experienced severe inundation. The Bulloo River in Quilpie surpassed its historic 1974 flood levels, prompting evacuations and causing residents to seek refuge eslewhere. Reports of the catastrophic impact on agricultural businesses and communities have included estimates of the loss or disappearance of over 105,000 livestock. It has also been reported that infrastructure damage has seen the destruction of more than 3,000km of fencing and 4000km of private roads. More than 300 roads have been closed, hindering access and relief efforts. The Queensland Government has 24 | Motor Trader April 2025

MTAQ & AADA HIT THE ROAD AS PARTNERSHIP GETS UNDERWAY
I
N FEBRUARY, MTA Queensland and the Australian Automotive Dealer Association (AADA) formalised a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enhance cooperation and leverage the strengths of both organisations to better serve the interests of their members. The agreement outlines several actions to be taken, with coordination of messaging, cross-representation in committees, shared resources, and streamlined membership processes amongst them. At the beginning of April, the two organisations held a joint road-trip, with senior executives - including MTA Queensland CEO Rod Camm and AADA CEO James Voortman - visiting major Queensland hubs to bring the message of the partnership to their dealership members, to highlight the issues and topics upon which they are currently working, and to get input from members on those issues and other matters of concern. Roadtrip stops included the Gold Coast, Toowoomba, Sunshine Coast,

Brisbane, Cairns and Townsville, with issues discussed including State motor vehicle duty; skills development and jobs programs; licensing of salespeople; industrial relations; Australian Consumer Law; the New Vehicle Efficiency Standard; and the electric vehicle transition and what it means for regional Queensland. Speaking after day two of the road trip, Mr Camm said he was pleased with the turnout and with the participation of members. "The attendance has been very encouraging. Members are turning up eager to participate and develop an understanding of what is a happening across the industry," he said. The roadtrip is the first stage in a process that will see MTA Queensland and AADA coordinate activities and policy positions and share resources for maximum impact. And Mr Camm added that members would be seeing Association representative more frequently to discuss industrial relations, Australian Consumer Law and other relevant issues. "Industry expects all

"Members can now participate in MTA Queensland forums, knowing we will be briefing AADA on all relevant issues. We can engage locally and influence nationally. The same principle applies to AADA meetings." The roadtrip endeavour to communicate with members in person on the details of the new organisational relationship and other topics, has been very well received. “Being a member of both organisations
it was very pleasing to see the unity and how effectively they manage State and National issues as experts in respective areas,” said David Russell, Dealer Principal at Wippells Autos in Toowoomba. “The in-person format rather than online made the session very engaging and informative. It was a good reminder of how both organisations benefit our business.” Ultimately, the partnership between MTA Queensland and AADA strengthens all aspects of the work of both organisations and, by extension, enhances the strength of its members. In a period of significant challenges – from regulations and tariffs to technological developments and the cost-of-living squeeze on the public – such strength and purpose is critical.

N EARLY 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump announced a 25 per cent tariff on imported vehicles and automotive parts, effective April 3, 2025. This policy is aimed, the Administration claimed, at bolstering domestic manufacturing and addressing what it apparently sees as unfair trade imbalances. On the White House website, a fact sheet reads in part that Trump was imposing the tariff to address ‘. . . a critical threat to U.S. national security.’ Whatever the merits of that argument, the 25 per cent tariff on imported vehicles and automotive components represents a seismic shift in global trade policies, with the potential to disrupt established manufacturing practices. Effects may well include increased production costs and supply chain reconfiguration as carmakers try to work out how their complex and interwoven supply chains - that may span multiple countries - will impact business. Also possible is a market realignment as manufacturers increase prices in response to increasing costs and consumers respond by shifting to other brands and models or delay their purchase. Some carmakers have already begun to implement strategies to mitigate the impact of the tariffs. General Motors (GM) and Nissan are reportedly to increase

production at their U.S. plants, while Jaguar Land Rover was reported to be temporarily suspending exports of UKmanufactured vehicles to the U.S. market. Ford, meanwhile, is offered employee-level pricing to U.S. customers to stimulate demand. Australia, with no large-scale domestic car manufacturing, is deeply integrated into the global automotive supply chain and heavily reliant on vehicle imports. As such, the U.S. tariffs are expected to have an impact locally. These could see an increase in vehicle prices and parts suppliers and service providers may face

challenges due to global supply chain adjustments. Since Trump announced the 25 per cent tariff on imported vehicle and parts, he has gone on to introduce a tariff scheme that has struck just about every nation. The President argued the tariffs are aimed at rectifying trade practices that contributed to substantial annual U.S. goods trade deficits and such measures were necessary to strengthen the economic position of the U.S. and protect American workers. Tariffs ranged from 10 per cent for some countries, Australia included, to 34 per cent for China, and even higher for others. Predicatably, financial markets, the U.S. included, were jittery at the news and falls were recorded everywhere. At a media conference held following news of the tariffs, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese criticised the U.S. move as unjustified and detrimental to the longstanding trade relationship between the two nations. He described the decision as "not the act of a friend" and underscored that such measures undermine the
principles of free and fair trade. Despite that, the Prime Minister ruled out implementing reciprocal tariffs, stating, "We will not join a race to the bottom that leads to higher prices and slower growth." Instead, he expressed a preference for resolving the issue through negotiation. The Prime Minister did announce some measures designed to assist the Australian economy. Included amongst these are the strengthening of anti-dumping regime to protect sectors against unfair competition; $50 million for affected sectors; establish an economic resilience program to provide $1billion in zero-interest loans for firms to capitalise on new export opportunities; ensuring the government would ‘buy Australian’; and establish a critical minerals strategic reserve. The tariffs introduced by President Trump have initiated a complex realignment of international trade relations and Australia, while not the primary target, must navigate the challenges posed with care and diplomacy. Shari's career path has been an adventurous one, blending personal passion and professional expertise. "My journey to end up where I am today has been very roundabout," she shared. "I'm a country girl and grew up on a property, so I have strong agricultural ties. However, I studied business at school and university, and numbers have always excited me. “I travelled, met Steve while overseas, and we came back and worked on properties, so that connection to agriculture has always been our foundation and the area we wanted to pursue. Fast forward to where we are
now, and we've got this exciting business where we're able to put farmers first in everything that we do." Outside of BMAS, Shari spares time to be part of MTA Queensland’s committee for the Farm and Industrial Machinery Dealers Division (QFIMDD). It’s an extra layer of responsibility for someone who already has much on her plate running her flourishing business. "My involvement with MTA Queensland and the farm machinery division has been something of an information-gathering purpose for me. I always strive to know everything that's going on in my industry. I think, from a business perspective, it's important to be well informed so we can make those decisions," she said. "On a personal level, I believe in giving back. In everything I do in my life, I give back and,

for me, this is my way to give back to the industry that has given to us." Her connection with the QFIMDD division provides unique insights into the challenges faced by the industry. "My involvement in the division also enables me to speak to other dealerships," said Shari. "It's great to know that the problems we are experiencing at a local level in our business are those being experienced by other dealerships in other brands and locations, and the division gives us the opportunity to lobby government to find solutions to those problems and be creative on how we address them. For example, staffing is a
huge problem in our industry, so what can we do in training environments? How can we raise the profile of agriculture within the mechanical industry itself ? These initiatives need to be worked on, and I am excited to be part of that process." Amongst the many discussions had amongst those involved with the agricultural sector is one that revolves around technology. Agriculture is an innovation hotbed, integrating an astonishing array of advanced solutions to enhance productivity, sustainability, and efficiency. From GPS-guided equipment that achieves accuracy in planting, fertilising, and harvesting, to drones and AI-powered cameras that can identify crop health, pest infestations, and even individual weed species to enable selective interventions, there is a bewildering range of tech. Automation, electrification, and robotics are part of the agricultural landscape too, meaning that those who work in the sector must be highly trained and skilled and have a passion for the job. "The agricultural industry is exciting because it is at the cutting edge of technological advances," said Shari. April 2025 Motor Trader | 33
Behind the Wheel: Celebrating Women in Auto “It’s phenomenal, the technology that is out there, and really exciting to be part of. However, that does bring about some challenges, and those challenges include having people and team members willing to learn in that space. They have a preconceived idea Shari with Kye Robinson, the 2024 MTA Queensland Apprentice of the Year, of what a mechanic and 4th-year apprentice Trinity Dennis Walker looks like and what they should be doing and, in the agricultural sector, that's not the case. It's very broad. It's very exciting. And we need highly skilled technicians to take on these roles.” Not surprisingly, Shari’s determination to ensure BMAS can meet the high-tech demands of the community it serves means training is a vital part of operations. This is no more obvious than in the fact that in recent years, BMAS has seen three of its apprentices recognised as MTA Institute Apprentice of the Month winners the forefront of business development, with one of those winners, Kye Robinson, working with Steve to build on the growth being named as MTA Queensland’s achieved across the past 12 years. COURT BACKS GM IN HOLDEN DEALER STOUSH
Credit: TK Kurikawa / Shutterstock.com
G
ENERAL MOTORS (GM) has won its legal dispute with a group of 11 former Holden dealerships. In March, the Supreme Court of Victoria delivered a judgment in favour of GM, determining that GM did not breach its agreements with those dealers when it discontinued the Holden brand. It was in 2020 when GM announced the retirement of Holden, effective by the end of that year, and the decision impacted nearly 200 Holden dealerships nationwide, some of which had entered into five-year agreements with GM in 2018. The sudden termination of the brand disrupted their business operations. In response, GM offered compensation packages to the affected dealers reportedly amounting to $1,500 for each vehicle sold in 2019 - along with additional funds to cover recent showroom upgrades. Holden also offered dealers a servicing agreement ending in 2025. 11 dealerships declined the offer and pursued legal action, alleging that GM had a contractual obligation to supply vehicles for the full duration of their agreements. The case was brought before the Supreme Court of Victoria and the court's judgment is that GM did not breach its contractual obligations. The Australian Automotive Dealer Association (AADA) expressed profound disappointment at the result. “The legal argument successfully put forward by GM that they had no obligation under the Dealer Agreement to supply cars to their retailers is incredibly disappointing and sets a
dangerous precedent for the automotive industry,” said James Voortman, CEO of AADA. “These Dealers upheld their end of the bargain. They invested in facilities, employed staff and dedicated their talents to selling Holden vehicles in the communities in which they operate because they were led to believe that the Holden brand was set to stay in Australia for the long haul.” Mr Voortman said the court result underscored the critical nature of the Government’s recent announcement to strengthen the Franchising Code (see pages 22-23) "This highlights the importance of the franchising protections announced by the Government earlier this week and it is critical that we achieve bi-partisan support and enact these measures as soon as possible," he said. As the industry continues to evolve, this case serves as a critical reminder of the importance of explicit agreements and the challenges associated with navigating the legal landscape of franchise operations. FORD AUSTRALIA TURNS 100
F
ORD AUSTRALIA IS celebrating its centenary in 2025. And there is plenty to celebrate. While the company may no longer manufacture cars here, its legacy is a rich one indeed and you can’t talk about Australia’s automotive industry in historical terms without mentioning iconic vehicles such as the Falcon and all its many and varied models. Beyond the cars, of course, is the fact that the company was an integral part of the Australian economy and society. Generations of workers, customers, and communities are part of the company’s story. So where did it all start? For that, we have to travel back to 1923, when
THE MODEL T QUICKLY BECAME POPULAR DUE TO ITS AFFORDABILITY AND RESILIENCE IN COPING WITH AUSTRALIA'S HARSH TERRAIN AND LONG DISTANCES. North American Ford executives visited Australia to seek out a base to set up an operation to direct all Ford activities in the country. With the decision made to do just that, the story proper starts with on March 31, 1925, with the company established

coping with Australia's harsh terrain and long distances. Throughout the 1920s and 1930s, Ford Australia solidified its place in the automotive industry with the introduction of the Model A in 1928 and then in 1934, Ford Australia made one of its most significant contributions to automotive innovation with the creation of the first utility vehicle, better known, of course, as the 'ute'. Ford engineer Lewis Bandt designed and produced the original coupe utility, combining the comfort of a passenger car with the practicality of a cargo tray. This innovation was prompted by a farmer's request for a vehicle capable of both carrying goods to market and attending church services in comfort. The resulting vehicle was a huge success, and the ute would become an iconic part of Australian automotive culture. Ford shifted its significant industrial and manufacturing muscle during World War II to aid the war effort. The factories in Geelong and Sydney transitioned from civilian car manufacturing to producing military vehicles and aircraft components essential to the Allied war effort. After the war, Ford Australia rapidly

1960 XK Falcon expanded, introducing models designed to capture the growing suburban middle-class market. Notably, the Zephyr and the Consul became symbolic of the post-war prosperity in Australia. However, it was the launch of the Falcon in 1960 that transformed Ford Australia into a key player in the domestic automotive market. Initially based on an American design, the Falcon was uniquely tailored for Australian roads and conditions and quickly became iconic, enjoying a long production life through multiple iterations over the decades. In the 1960s and 1970s, Ford became heavily involved in motorsports, particularly touring car racing. The Falcon GT was a standout, emerging as a dominant force in Australian motorsport, famously winning the Bathurst 500, Australia's most prestigious motorsport event. The Falcon GT HO (Handling Option) Phase III, introduced in 1971, remains legendary, and was one of the fastest four-door production cars in the world at that time. Its success on the track made it a cultural icon and an enduring symbol of Australian muscle car heritage.

During this period, Ford developed a fierce rivalry with Holden, creating a dynamic competitive landscape within Australian motorsports and automotive culture. The Bathurst races, in particular, highlighted this rivalry, captivating enthusiasts and the Australian public with heroes such as Allan Moffat and Dick Johnson became synonymous with Ford, cementing its motorsport legacy. In the 1970s and 1980s -a period of adaptation as global oil crises and changing economic conditions changed public preferences - Ford introduced smaller cars such as the Ford Laser and Ford Telstar, cars with broad appeal that ensured Ford maintained market competitiveness. In the 1990s, Ford Australia's manufacturing capabilities reached new heights. The Falcon remained essential to the company’s model range and, in 2004, Ford introduced the Territory, Australia's first locally designed and built SUV. It was an immediate success. Despite all its success, and how deeply rooted the automotive industry as a whole had become in Australia, the early part

of this century saw significant challenges that every major manufacturer of cars in Australia struggled to overcome. Global economic pressures and consumer shifts toward imported vehicles and SUVs affected local manufacturers severely and in 2013, Ford Australia announced its decision to cease local vehicle manufacturing by October 2016, ending nearly a century of domestic car production. Holden, Toyota, and Mitsubishi would all do the same, bringing an apparent end to Australian car manufacturing. Although Ford ceased manufacturing vehicles locally, the Australian arm of the global giant remains a vital part of the company, transitioning into a critical global design, engineering, and testing hub. Ford maintains key facilities, including the Ford Design Centre and Asia Pacific Product Development Centre located in Broadmeadows, Melbourne, and the expansive You Yangs Proving Ground near Geelong. These facilities significantly contribute to global Ford projects.
IN THE 1990S, FORD AUSTRALIA'S MANUFACTURING CAPABILITIES REACHED NEW HEIGHTS . . . AND IN 2004, FORD INTRODUCED THE TERRITORY, AUSTRALIA'S FIRST LOCALLY DESIGNED AND BUILT SUV. IT WAS AN IMMEDIATE SUCCESS. Today, Ford Australia operates primarily as an importer and distributor of global Ford vehicles, focusing strongly on SUVs and commercial vehicles, notably the Ford Ranger, which has become Australia's bestselling vehicle in recent years. The company has - as all the heavy-hitting ‘legacy’ manufacturers have done - actively pursued vehicle electrification, launching hybrid and fully electric models, and the Ford name can still be seen on the racing tracks of Australia, with the Mustang now the ‘face’ of the brand in the Supercars Championship. Ford Australia may no longer be the pivotal local automotive manufacturing juggernaut it once was, but it remains an important part of the Blue CLICK Oval and the local industry, FOR MORE ON and it surely will remain so THE HISTORY OF FORD as the automotive industry continues its embrace of technology, innovation and electrification. Ford says the XLT variant will offer ‘touring-focused’ upgrades. Innovations in towing capability are central to Ranger Super Duty’s design.
Equipped with a recalibrated integrated trailer brake controller and Ford’s ProTrailer Backup Assist, the truck simplifies towing by utilising a yaw rate sensor to manage trailer angle automatically. Also here is Ford's Smart Hitch and Onboard Scales, aiding users in optimally distributing payload and avoid under or overloading the towball. Sensors integrated into the suspension provide real-time payload estimations displayed on the SYNC infotainment screen, ensuring precise load management. components including the engine, transmission, and fuel tank, protecting them during severe off-road operations. To meet the demands of extreme workloads, Ford says the Ranger Super Duty’s chassis has been significantly enhanced. A thicker frame, reinforced suspension mounts, and a heavy-duty rear axle enable the truck’s 4500kg Gross Vehicle Mass rating. Eight-stud wheel hubs and larger bolts further support heavy payloads.

THE TRUCK OFFERS SIX SELECTABLE DRIVE MODES—NORMAL, ECO, TOW/ HAUL, MUD/RUTS, SAND, AND ROCK CRAWL AND HAS AN ADVANCED FOURWHEEL-DRIVE SYSTEM FEATURING AUTOMATIC TORQUE MANAGEMENT.
Power for Ranger Super Duty comes from Ford 3-litre turbo diesel V6 engine, optimised for stringent emissions standards with improved cooling for off-road conditions. The powertrain is compliant with EU6.2 emissions regulations, and Ford says that an innovative diesel particulate filter (DPF) system allows operators to manually manage regeneration cycles for a time that suits. Recognising that the Ranger Super Duty will be pushed harder than conventional trucks, Ford elevated all critical breathers, enhancing the vehicle’s waterwading capabilities. The company says that extensive testing confirmed its suitability for emergency services, agriculture, and recreational off-road enthusiasts. The truck offers six selectable drive modes— Normal, Eco, Tow/Haul, Mud/Ruts, Sand, and Rock Crawl and has an advanced four-wheeldrive system featuring
automatic torque management. Additionally, it has upgraded two-speed transfer case and heavy-duty gearset, inspired by its larger F-Series Super Duty sibling. Standard front and rear locking differentials are here. The front differential, a modified variant from the Bronco Raptor, is specifically engineered to accommodate higher payloads and intense usage. The Ranger Super Duty features 33inch General Grabber all-terrain light truck tyres, has a wider track width, and increased ground clearance. There’s a unique bonnet design with chamfered edges and a leading edge stamped with ‘SUPER DUTY’. A new openweave mesh grille is designed for optimum air flow. There are also integrated device mounting points and a snorkel designed with Safari. Standard on all variants is a 12-inch infotainment screen with auxiliary switches located in the overhead console. Driver assistance tech will, of course, be extensive, with Ford saying the Ranger Super Duty gets front and rear parking aids, 360-degree camera, blind-spot monitoring with trailer coverage, forward collision warning, auto emergency braking as well as reverse brake assist with crosstraffic alert, and much more.
Ordering for Ranger Super Duty in Australia and New Zealand begins later this year, with dealer deliveries anticipated in 2026. April 2025 Motor Trader | 53

Apprentice of the Month: March 2025
The MTA Institute Apprentice of the Month is proudly sponsored by CareSuper
APPRENTICE: SAMUEL ELMES WORKPLACE: HEAVY COMMERCIAL VEHICLE MECHANICAL APPRENTICESHIP: TOOWOOMBA HEAVY DIESEL
S
amuel Elmes is the MTA Institute Apprentice of the Month for March 2025. The 21-year-old is in the fourth year of his heavy commercial apprenticeship and works at Toowoomba Heavy Diesel in Toowoomba, southeast Queensland. Samuel has proven to be an outstanding student and member of the Toowoomba Heavy Diesel team, impressing both his employer and his MTA Institute trainer with his commitment, skills development, and professionalism. “His eagerness to learn and grow in his trade is evident in the quality of work he produces and his willingness to take on new challenges,” said his employer. Samuel’s choice of Heavy Commercial as a trade was an easy decision to make – once the decision to do a trade at all had actually been made. Brought up on a sheep station near Augathella – a town located about 750km west of Brisbane with a population of about 350 people – Samuel and his older brother Jack grew up working on and around the machinery and equipment that makes such a property tick. When it came time for the boys to attend boarding school in Toowoomba, a deal was struck between parents and sons – go to university or get a trade before coming back to the station. “That was our rule – that if we were to ever to go back to the property, we have a fallback,” said Samuel with a laugh. That fallback for Samuel was to look for an apprenticeship and train to work in heavy commercial. A family connection put him in contact with Ross Martyr, owner of Toowoomba Heavy Commercial, and after a three-month probationary period in 2022, and following his graduation from school, the then 18-year-old began his apprenticeship. In the three years since, Samuel has, thanks to the variety of services offered by Toowoomba Heavy Diesel, worked on just about everything that has a diesel engine - from trucks to mining equipment and everything in between.
70 | Motor Trader April 2025
“We do quite a lot of gensets [generators] around Toowoomba and, lately, we've been doing a lot of irrigation pumps around Dalby,” said Samuel. “Then there's maintenance for a few different fleet companies that we look after, and tractors and loaders, bobcats and diggers come in too.” The business also offers a mobile repair and maintenance service, which can see the team, Samuel included, heading off, sometimes for days at a time, many miles from home base. “We have a lot of truck customers all over Queensland,” said Samuel. “Our call-out area is normally around Dalby . . . but a few months ago, one of the boys spent a week out at Longreach with one of our customers.” For those who don’t know, Longreach is just over 1000km north-west of Toowoomba! While Samuel is tremendously enthusiastic about all the work he gets to do, there are a couple of items that he does particularly enjoy. “We take on quite a few engine builds and they’re pretty satisfying, especially when you get to the end of the job and you get to start it up after working on it for so long,” he said. “Diagnostics can be satisfying too, once you have figured out what the hell went wrong!” While the heavy commercial and agricultural sectors will likely always rely somewhat on diesel power, for a young apprentice with a long career ahead, electrification is something that has to be considered. And Samuel has thought about it enough that he may take on auto electrical training once he has completed his current trade. "Because a lot it is all the new stuff, it goes back to the dealer, I don’t think it will hit us for a little bit, but it has crossed my mind.” More training, and prepping for an electrified future, might be on the cards but, for now, as he nears the end of his heavy commercial apprenticeship, sticking with Toowoomba Heavy Diesel is Samuel’s plan. And since his parents have now moved to a property just over an hour from Toowoomba, making the decision to stay in town has been a relatively easy one. CLICK “I’m not 100 per cent sure how things will TO VISIT THE TOOWOOMBA work out now,” said Samuel of his plans. “I HEAVY DIESEL enjoy the work here and so I’d like to stick WEBSITE here and see how it all pans out.”

A YEAR IN THE FAST LANE FOR 2024 MTAQ APPRENTICE OF THE YEAR
A
T JUST 20 years old, fourthyear light vehicle apprentice Kye Robinson has already made something of a splash in his fledgling automotive career. The young apprentice from BMAS Biloela – a farm and agricultural machinery dealership and servicing business located in the central Queensland town of Biloela – has had a remarkable year. In February of 2024, he was named the MTA Institute’s Apprentice of the Month and, in November, his outstanding work saw him recognised as MTA Queensland’s 2024 Apprentice of the Year. That accolade would see him presented with a 300-piece Repco toolkit and the opportunity to enjoy one week of work experience with the Penrite Racing/Grove Racing Repco Supercars Championship team based in Melbourne. It's an opportunity any apprentice would relish and Kye did too, although, unfortunately, his trip was cut short to just three days due to the impending arrival in Queensland of Cyclone Alfred and the threat of disruption and destruction that

travelled with it. However, while the Supercars work experience was cut to three days from five, it was nonetheless a transformative one. "The Penrite Racing experience was awesome. It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity," said Kye. "And it was a very big eye-opener with how precise you have to be on the mechanical side of it. It was incredible, to be honest. “And the workshop at Grove Racing was incredible! Beautiful painted floors, not a speck of dust anywhere - it was proper state-of-the-art. Snap-on toolboxes were everywhere. Everything was set up and had its own little place. It was pretty cool." Welcomed warmly by the team at Grove Racing, Kye quickly adapted to the professional environment and found himself immersed in a world of precision and teamwork. "The people I was working with were really down to earth and really awesome at what they do," he said. "They do the pit crew-side of the work as well, so not only do you have to be mechanically

smart and be able to do your job swinging spanners, you also need to be able to swing tyres on the cars!" Kye tried his hand at pit practice himself, and the hard work – including keeping fit – that the team put in to getting things perfect certainly left an impression. "They did a pit practice every day we were down there and . . . I did have a go one day,” said Kye. “It just blew me away how well they could do it. They go to the gym three times a week. It's a huge commitment for them. I take my hat off to them, I really do." While Kye cut the work experience in Melbourne a little short, it did nothing to diminish his enthusiasm for what had been a brilliant year, perhaps capped by the moment he was named Apprentice of the Year. That moment was, he said, rather surreal. "What was it like to win the apprentice of the year award? Honestly? Breathtaking," he said. "I'll be 100 per cent honest that . . . It was amazing, and I have to thank everyone so much - from MTA Queensland to my bosses, to the other nominees. "Winning that award is amazing," he added. "After it was all publicised on Facebook, I had a lot of people - from family to friends, and even just other people in the community that I didn't know but who had seen it - come up and say congratulations, give me a pat on
the back and what-not. It did feel really good and felt like I had really achieved something." The 300-piece Repco toolkit that was also part of the Apprentice of the Year prize has also come in handy. "That has been awesome," said Kye. "I've been using it a heap - Repco tools are great. I've already got a heap of them, so I was very, very happy with that." At BMAS Biloela, Kye is nearing the completion of his light vehicle apprenticeship and said that working there

You’re under pressure, you need to get things going, and finding solutions and fixing stuff in those pressure situations, and getting customers back out on the road, is really good. After a year crammed with new VIDEO: KYE ROBINSON, 2024 APPRENTICE OF THE YEAR experiences, Kye’s enthusiasm for the work, for the job, for the industry, is clear, and he is keen to reinforce what fantastic opportunities there are for other young people who might be thinking of taking a look at the automotive industry for a career. "Would I encourage people to do a mechanical apprenticeship? Personally, I think it is one of the most rewarding jobs there is," he said. LECTRIFICATION, CONNECTIVITY, ADAS systems, and other new technologies are seeping into every sector of automotive. Some of this tech – ADAS systems, for example – have now become the norm and every new vehicle, from entry-level budget models to the most expensive models from luxury brands, from electric vehicles (EVs) to diesel-powered SUVs, are now stuffed to the gills with gadgetry and software that have to be considered when it comes time for the vehicle to be serviced, maintained or repaired. And so it has never been more important for technicians and businesses to keep up with developments. And to be able to work on these systems safely means more training. Developing and offering the upskilling training programs to meet these requirements is part of the job for Marcello Riotto, Director of the MTA Institute, the largest private provider of automotive training in Queensland. Along with overseeing these upskilling training options, Marcello also leads the
