All products are package-free, so all you need to do is bring in your own container to fill with whateveritisthatyoumightneed, whetherthat be shampoo, soap, or food, such as lentils and pasta. The first stage adaptation of The Three Musketeers was written by Alexandre Dumas himself as a sequel to his 1845 novel, just a year after the book was published. Since then, stage adaptations of The Three Musketeers have certainlynotbeenhardtofind.Iwatchedthelatest adaptation here in Aberystwyth at The Arts Centre on October 30th. This production was written and directed by Richard Tunley. In it, BlackRatProductionsandtheBlackwoodMiners' Institute take the heroic musketeers on a tour across Wales. Promising a story that merges both Shakespeare and Netflix into one, this energetic adaptationdoesn'tshyawayfromabsurditywhilst still delivering the classic themes of camaraderie andadventure.
The play sets the scene in France, 1626. It follows D'Artagnan's (Seren Vickers) journey as he leaves his small provincial home to seek adventure in Paris, hoping to join the legendary King's Musketeers. Tunley's humour and pop culture referencesareundoubtedlyamoderntwist, almost pantomime in quality, transforming the 19thcentury novel into an accessible comedy for a modern audience. Referencing iconic French-set productionslikeLesMisĂŠrablesandBeautyandthe Beast, Tunley's The Three Musketeers is an energetic, musical conglomeration that prioritises fun and excitement within each scene. Even when D'Artagnan's lover, Constance Bonacieux (Owen Pugh),istragicallypoisoned, thecharactersare
quicktobouncebackintotheadventure, andthe show never loses its light-hearted tone. The villainous Cardinal (Zoe Davies) equally loses his menacing intensity in favour of comical, exaggerated mannerisms and a Donald Trump impression.
With a brisk and action-packed runtime, Tunley'sdirectionensuresthatthestoryremains easytofollowwhilemaintainingalivelypace. The exposition is integrated into the script clearly, ensuring the audience is never lost and can quicklygrasptheessentialdetails.Eachcharacter is introduced multiple times, with Mr. de Treville's name in particular repeated frequently to reinforce his importance. This approach is tongue-in-cheek deliberately obvious for those unfamiliarwiththeplot. However, itrisksfeeling abitcondescending, asitseemstounderestimate the audience's intelligence, assuming they need constant reinforcement to remember or understandthecharacters'roles.
accenteachtime.Despiteitssmallcast, theshow neverfeelslacking, witheachchangeoccurring remarkably fluidly and at impressive speed. While the transitions are not entirely seamless, the audience is too caught up in the absurd chaosofeachscenetomind, embracingthemad unpredictability and frantic energy that the actorsbringtotheirrapidlyshiftingroles.
It's evident that the crew had a fun time creating this production, and the joy of being involved shines through clearly. The actors bring abundant energy to every movement, playing up each exaggerated moment especiallyintheboyband-stylemusicalnumbers performed by the four musketeers (written by Allyson Summerhayes and composed by Dai Smith).Theircontagiousenthusiasmcreatesan atmosphere that resonates with the audience andinviteseveryonetolaughoutloudandclap along to the music. Early in the play, an audience member sitting in the front row is encouraged to stand on the stage to hold onto someprops.Later, whenheiscalledbackupto thestagetoplayQueenAnne, thecheatingwife of King Louis XIII, the audience erupts in cheers.Thisaudienceparticipationisintegrated wonderfully into this performance, as the audiencebecomespartoftheshowinawaythat feelsspontaneousandpersonal.
Impressively, the cast is made up of only four actors, who play the many parts between themselves.Inhigh-actionmomentsthatdemand many characters on stage, the four actors switch betweenrolesveryquickly, withhatsbeingadded or taken off and tunics repeatedly being turned backwards and forwards. Through these frantic scenes, Olivier Sublet and Owen Pugh are particularly memorable when they run out of doors and back in through others, wearing differentaccessoriesandspeakinginadifferent
