Meet The Mouths of the Ystwyth: Welcome to MOTY! We are Aberystwyth’s Student Newspaper, reporting on anything student or Aberystwyth related – it can be art, photos, poems, short stories, comic strips, articles, reviews. If you have something you’d like to publish that is not listed above, feel free to message our Instagram or email our mailbox.

A Note from the Editor: Dear Readers, This mini edition is tailored specifically to Freshers. The beginning of university is an exciting time for everyone, but especially for those arriving in Aber for the first time. I felt disorientated for the first few months of university and this edition comes from that experience.

So, whether you feel as though you are fully settled in Aber or still feel confused where you are when you wake up, there’s something here for everone! From quizzes to overviews to uides, this mini edition of Mouth of the Ystwyth contains essential knowledge on Aberystywth.We have worked very hard to get it here - I hope that you enjoy reading it and find it useful!

Aberystwyth University is a public research university and a founding member institution of the former federal University of Wales. Before I risk giving you a history lesson, I shall begin my guide to campus. The Hugh Owen Building is possibly the largest building on campus and is home to the Hugh Owen Library as well as the departments of English and Creative Writing, Criminology and Law, and Modern Languages. The Aberystwyth Business School is also located within the Hugh Owen building.

The Llandinam Building is the home to the department of Geography and Earth Sciences, and Computer Sciences. Llandinam also houses the Think Tank, a study area that offers wi-fi, four computers, photocopier, vending machine, water fountain, seating for 27 people, two 5-person study areas and two 6person study areas.

Edward Llwyd houses laboratories and teaching rooms, and is placed next to the Gwendolen Rees Building, a building that possesses the IBERS bach cafe and the department of life sciences.

Lluest Equine Centre is a purpose built teaching facility that is located within the University’s Llanbadarn campus.

P5 has the departments of information studies, psychology and the school of education within its walls. The Parry Williams Building keeps the departments of Theatre, Film and Television Studies, and Welsh and Celtic Studies.

The School of Art - also named the Edward Davies Building - is located close to the Penglais Campus and towards the town centre. It’s the home to art and photography.

Aberystwyth University possesses many places for students and staff to get food whilst on campus. The possibly most obvious is the University’s award winning food hall. The Food Hall’s lunchtime menu offers fresh vegetarian and vegan meals at a cheap price as well as a salad bar, cold drinks, and hot drinks. The Food Hall also serves a selection of both cold and hot foods, including jacket potatoes, sandwiches and paninis.

Aberystwyth Arts Centre is located on the main body of the campus. The home to many cool things, but here I’d like to highlight the Arts Centre Cafe. They are always striving to maintain their reputation for great food and service.

On the note of cafes, CAFFIBach is Aberystwyth University’s modern cafe located in the new IBERS building. The menu options include; sandwiches, baguettes, salads, a wide selection of hot and cold drinks, a selection of speciality teas, freshly squeezed juice, cream cakes and cookies and a wide selection of fruit and snacks.

The Students’ Union Shop provides a wide selection of snacks, cold drinks, hot drinks and a variety of food products, including pasta, hot dogs, pastries and pies.

Campus houses many cosy spots to hang out with your friends. The Aberystwyth Arts Centre holds the Arts shop and the Arts Centre Cafe. The Aberystwyth Arts Centre often puts on shows and cinema events throughout the year, and various art galleries. There’s plenty of comfy seating areas throughout the uppermost floor of the Aberystwyth Arts Centre. The Students’ Union also possesses plenty of seating areas, with a bar and restaurant.

There’s a pool table and plenty of space to study.

The Food Hall also allows for a great space to hang out with friends on campus over food, and also allows for a great space to study - either alone or with friends.

The University also holds a careers service that aims to maintain accessibility. The Careers Service provides a direct link between students, graduates and employers to support talent spotting, recruitment and business development opportunities. They are often available at the base of the Hugh Owen Library by the stairs.

The name Aberystwyth translates to ‘Mouth of the Ystwyth’!

It’s named that because it sits at the confluence of the Afon Rheidol and River Ystwyth – and makes a very fitting name for our paper. The river that passes through Aber is the Afon Rheidol, and the River Ystwyth also passed through the town until the harbour was reconstructed.

Actor Taron Egerton, famous for playing Eggsy Unwin in the Kingsman film franchise, grew up in Aberystwyth! In an episode of the Off the Menu podcast, he named one of his favourite takeouts in the world as Lip Lickin’ Chicken, which is on Pier Street!

We’re more Penguin aligned, personally.

Aberystwyth Castle was first built in the late 13th century by Edward I during the English invasion and conquest of Wales.

It was attacked and besieged by Welsh rebel’s multiple times, most notably in 1404 when Owain Glyndŵ r captured the castle during a national uprising against English occupation.

It was then recaptured by the English 4 years later, who then turned it into the site of a Royal mint until the castle was destroyed by Oliver Cromwell’s forces in 1649. Today, the castle’s ruins are the site of a lovely walk along the seafront.

Aberystwyth University is the oldest in all of Wales! Its humble beginnings started in a half-finished renovated hotel, which would go on to become the Old College, with just 25 students enrolled. And in 1878, Aberystwyth’s first student magazine, called ‘The Dragon’, printed its first volume.

Aberystwyth is twinned with 5 different towns: Arklow, in Wicklow, Ireland Kronberg im Taunus, in Germany Saint-Brieuc, in Brittany, France Esquel, in Patagonia, Argentina …and Yosano, in Japan!

Cardigan Bay is the home of some incredible marine wildlife. You can see bottlenose dolphins from May to September, so make sure to watch the bow wave in front of moving boats — that’s where they like to surf! Atlantic Grey Seals are also fond of the waters around Aberystwyth, as it’s one of their favourite breeding grounds. Watch out for their adorable white-coated pups from September to December.

Winter is the best season to watch the incredible murmurations, as starlings migrate to Wales from colder parts of Europe. The number of birds roosting under the pier at dusk is an estimated 30,000!

The National Library of Wales holds over 6.5 million books and periodicals and has the largest collection of archival material in all of Wales. It’s home to an original copy of the first book ever printed in Welsh in 1546, Yny lhyvyr hwnn (In This Book) and around 300 medieval manuscripts.

Aberystwyth University boasts one of the most wellknown alumni in the world ... King Charles III! He spent a term at the university learning Welsh which he still occasionally uses in speeches. He stayed in Pantycelyn for the duration of his studies, and you can even watch the dramatised version of this in The Crown, which depicts his stay in Aberystwyth!

Food Shopping

It’s a little bit freaky being a fresher. I remember the feeling vividly: moving in, meeting new people, going to your first lecture and feeling professionally grown-up. It’s lovely in some ways, but things pile up before you know it.

Coming from the perspective of a third year, it’s easy to say that Aber is a great place to shop.

You’ve got Lidl, Tesco and M&S, but amongst those large chain supermarkets there are wonderful little nooks that host the best bargains. Some took me a devastatingly long time to find, which brings me to the purpose of this article! Keep reading as I explore the best shops Aberystwyth has to offer, saving you both money and time!

Food shopping is quite a mundane task, let’s be blunt about it. It’s an activity that you’ll probably procrastinate on, especially if you’re living in student halls and don’t fancy the trek up Penglais Hill with shopping bags. Over the course of my time in Aber, after many weeks with a food shop awaiting completion, I feel I have sort-of finessed the art of it. We’re all on a budget; that’s the most important thing, and the British economy of 2025 might not be helping you with it. For me, I quickly learnt that fruit and fresh produce is cheapest in Lidl – but not all the time. At the time of writing, Tesco’s 250g blueberries stands at £2.50, while Lidl’s is temporarily price cut from £2.85 to £2.65! As a new young adult, you might find yourself wondering what difference 35p makes, but if you were to buy one pack of Lidl blueberries every week for the whole 40 weeks of an academic year, it comes to £56 more than it would if you got them at Tesco! That’s 11 Saturday night pier entries, by the way…

I promise, the amount of walking Aber offers is almost unavoidable, so you’re going to need the sustenance. If you’re anything like me and you love a fried egg, eggs are a weekly occurrence on the shopping list. Personally, I like a good quality egg from chickens that I can at least assume are well kept, but prices get more insane every April and occasionally a random November too.

Marks and Spencer’s being a neighbour to Tesco is so convenient when they sell Free Range Mixed Size Eggs at £1.45, as opposed to Tesco’s at £1.75 for the same grade and quality. Poultry and fish is a more debatable topic. Below, you’ll find receipts from each supermarket, showing you, the reader, a quick summary of value meats and fish at current RRP: It’s quite obvious where the best value for money lies here, but when it comes to other grocery items, it’s best to get a feel for where you think you’ll save the most money. After a few weeks, you’ll definitely get into a routine of completing (but still avoiding) your food shop in good fashion.

Aber is a host of so many small businesses, and I think that’s my favourite thing about shopping here. Main street isn’t packed full of chain stores and titbit, we are lucky enough to have a range of personalised nooks. Sure, we’ve got our necessities: Poundland, Savers, Superdrug etc., but it’s more apt to focus on stores like Dylan’s Den, Polly, Vintage Vibes, Her Dandy Wolf and so many more.

Her Dandy Wolf is located on Market Street, around the corner from Waterstones. It is a shop that can’t quite come under one label. They have handmade clothing, academic diaries, jewellery, and on their bottom floor a room full of vintage clothing. I actually did not discover this shop until the very end of my second year here, and for that I am gutted; this little shop truly has it all if you are looking for a present for somebody or yourself.

Aber also has a brilliant range of charity shops. If you are in a society, these are going to be your best friends for any social nights or themed RAG events.

If not, there have still been multiple occasions where I’ve found a cute number. The British Red Cross is best for this; they are in partnership with ZARA, so they sell brand new clothing with minor defects at fabulous prices! Also, if you are in a reading-heavy course like me, you’re going to need somewhere to get cheap books. We have two Oxfam’s in Aberystwyth: one provides homeware and clothing, the other entirely dedicated to books.

It’s one of my favourite shops in town.

My final (and arguably most important) part of this article leaves us with café’s. Aber is brilliant for cafés, whether you’re wanting a coffee on the way up the hill, a place to study or a bit of lunch. Of course, prices do vary, but a smaller price tag doesn’t necessarily mean a nasty experience. I think my favourite café, and fittingly one of the most famous, must be Little Devils. This little spot is located on Terrace Road, the same road as KFC and directly facing Spoons. Their menu is extensive, caters to vegans, vegetarians and those that are gluten-free, and every month they update their specials board to include fun new dishes and drinks.

Moreover, it’s delicious, and prices are more than fair when comparing to some other eateries in town; I have never tired from visiting this place!

Little Devils is a much more food-centred place, but my personal favourite study spot is Coffee No.1. It offers a cosy, ambient atmosphere, with plenty of tables and plug sockets, and a wonderful menu. My go to order is more often a matcha latte, but I do rate the iced americano too! If you simply ask the baristas for the Wi-Fi password with your order, they are happy to give it to you, and you can choose from one out of two floors of seating − you’ll usually find me on the top! Everyone knows that flatmates are integral to your life at university - they’re usually the first people you form connections with in freshers week and in some cases they can make or break your first year experience. It’s always a good idea to try and get to know the people you’re living with 24/7, and a movie night is one solid method of accomplishing this. So, I’ve compiled a short list of five great films to watch for the perfect flatmate movie night, including

some classic comfort films and crowdpleasers. If you’re after a cosy night in, looking for a background film for pres, or you just really want to get the ball rolling, keep this list in mind! Remember, these are best enjoyed with a cheap sharing pack of sweet and/or salty popcorn. (Disclaimer: if you’re unlucky enough to hate your flatmates from the get go, these films are just as enjoyable with your other friends).

PARTY SMARTER! A Guide to Safety on a Night Out in Aberystwyth – Anonymous

Nights out are meant to be fun experiences, but it’s important to take a few simple precautions to ensure your own safety and the safety of your friends. Here’s a handy guide to help you stay safe while enjoying yourself:

Before you Leave: Charge your phone

Make sure your phone is sufficiently charged before heading out. You never know when you’ll need to call a friend, order a taxi, or use maps to find your way. (They can also be useful for talking to your friends in a loud club!)

Eat something

Having food in your stomach before drinking can slow the absorption of alcohol and reduce its impact. A decent meal can make all the difference late in the night.

Plan how you’ll get home.

You don’t need a rigid plan, but a rough idea of how you’ll get back is handy. If you’re walking, sharing a taxi, or catching a lift, let someone know your plan. And, if you’re walking, make sure you’re familiar with the route. (In Aberystwyth, taxis can usually be found outside of the train station.)

During your night: Stick with your friends

Stay close to the people you trust and look out for each other. If someone starts to wander off (especially with strangers) check in. It’s easier and safer when everyone has each other’s backs.

Watch your drink

Always keep an eye on your drink and never

accept drinks from strangers. If you’ve left your drink unattended, it’s safest not to finish it.

Keep your belongings safe

Carry essentials like your phone, ID, cash, and keys in a secure place. A small crossbody bag or zipped pockets are ideal. Avoid carrying valuables that you don’t need.

Be aware of your surroundings

Stick to well-lit streets, avoid dark shortcuts, and trust your instincts. If someone or something is making you uncomfortable, remove yourself from the situation.

Know your limits

You don’t have to drink just because others are.

Everyone handles alcohol differently. Don’t let peer pressure push you past your comfort zone.

Don’t share drinks

While it might seem harmless to swap sips with a mate, sharing drinks can spread germs (or worse). There is always a risk of drink spiking, so it’s better to play it safe.

Alert Staff

If someone is making you uncomfortable or you want to get out of a situation talk to bar staff, or the bouncers at a club.

When you get home: Drink some water

Try to drink a full glass of water before bed. It won’t cure a hangover, but it helps reduce dehydration caused by alcohol.

Check in with friends

Let someone know you’ve made it home safe. A quick “Home safe!” text can give peace of mind to your friends (especially if you don’t live together)

Many Android phones allow you to trigger an emergency message by rapidly pressing the power button (usually three to five times). Check your phone setting to enable this feature.

Useful Safety Apps:

bSafe – Lets friends track your location in real-time and includes an SOS button.

Hollie Guard – Developed by a personal safety charity, it can send alerts and record evidence automatically.

WalkSafe – Highlights crime hotspots on a map and allows you to plan safe walking routes.

Many phones now also offer ‘find my phone’ services, where you can share your location with a friend or family member.

These features usually have an emergency button.

Remember, staying safe doesn’t mean you have to spoil the fun, it just means that you are prepared. A little planning goes a long way, so you can focus on having a great tome and making memories.

Press and hold the side and volume buttons to activate Emergency SOS. This will sound an alarm and begin a countdown before calling emergency services. You can also set it to alert your emergency contact automatically.

BUSES: AN OVERVIEW

Making the most of the bus system in and around Aberystwyth is a great way to get to know the area.

Whether you live in town or in university accommodation, buses regularly go up and down Penglais Hill for all your transport needs. Taking bus routes such as TrawsCymru’s T2/T28 and the T5 will get you between the University and the town. Mid Wales Travel offers a similar route on the 301. If you are looking to go further afield, the T5 can take you to the sea-side town of Aberaeron and even onwards to Haverfordwest, while the T2/T28 has hourly services to Machynlleth. Taking the bus is also cost effective, particularly if you take advantage of the mytravelpass for 16-21 year olds, which grants you £1 bus singles and £3 day tickets.

Results Mostly A: Academic Astronaut Your focus is on your future; university is just a pit stop on the way to a flourishing career. You find enjoyment in your studies – you’re probably set on doing a Master’s, if not a PhD or have been thinking about job applications since you were a fresher.

Recommendation: visit the National Library of Wales, for the deep intellectual atmosphere you crave.

Mostly B: Introverted Individual The world can often feel like it’s too much, and because of that you prefer to spend time by yourself. You probably have a hobby you are very avidly into, and your weekly shop is always near identical to the week before.

Recommendation: check what movies are on at the Arts Centre and the Commodore. It’s a great way to treat yourself and see a more of town.

Mostly C: Party Person Your priority while you’re at university is to have fun – what happens next is not your problem. You love meeting new people and switching things up.

You’re constantly running into people you know; you’ve met at least two thirds of the town.

Recommendation: Keep an eye out for events happening around town. The billboard outside of Y Cwps and in the SU bar show many student-led music events.

Mostly D: Connection Crafter Your main concern is finding and keeping your people around. An ideal schedule for you is jam packed with coffee catchups and evenings spent with your friends. You’re pretty flexible with your time and are always there for the people you love.

Recommendation: Have a look through Aber Uni’s list of clubs and societies!

If there’s an interest your friend group shares, it is pretty much guaranteed that there is a society for it.

Mae Prifysgol Aberystwyth yn brifysgol ymchwil gyhoeddus ac yn aelod sefydledig o’r cyn-ffederasiwn Prifysgol Cymru. Cyn i fi fod mewn perygl o roi gwers hanes i ti, mi wnâi ddechrau fy nghyfeirydd i’r campws. Efallai mai’r adeilad mwyaf ar y campws yw’r Adeilad Hugh Owen – mae’n gartref i’r Llyfrgell Hugh Owen, yn ogystal ag adrannau Saesneg ac Ysgrifennu Creadigol, Troseddeg a Chyfraith, ac Ieithoedd Modern. Mae Ysgol Fusnes Aberystwyth hefyd yn yr adeilad Hugh Owen.

Mae’r Adeilad Llandinam yn gartref i’r adran Daearyddiaeth a Gwyddorau Daear, yn ogystal â Gwyddoniaeth Gyfrifiadurol. Mae Llandinam hefyd yn gartref i’r Felin Drafod, ardal astudio sy’n cynnig wifi, pedwar cyfrifiadur, llungopïwr, peiriant gwerthu, ffynnon ddŵr, seddi i 27 o bobl, dwy ardal astudio breifat i 5 person, a dwy ardal breifat i 6 o bobl.

Canolfan Geffylau Lluest yw’r ganolfan addysg arbenigol, wedi’ leoli ar gampws Llanbadarn y Brifysgol.

Yn P5 mae’r adrannau Astudiaethau Gwybodaeth, Seicoleg, a’r Ysgol Addysg. Mae’r adrannau Theatr, Astudiaethau Ffilm a Theledu, a Chymraeg ac Astudiaethau Celtaidd yn yr Adeilad Parry Williams.

Mae’r Ysgol Gelf – caiff hefyd ei enwi’n Adeilad Edward Davies – rhwng y campws Penglais a chanol y dre. Mae’n gartref i’r adrannau Celf a Ffotograffiaeth.

Mae gan Brifysgol Aberystwyth nifer o lefydd i fyfyrwyr a staff gale bwyd tra maent ar gampws. Efallai mai’r amlycaf yw Neuadd Fwyd arobryn y Brifysgol. Cynigiai fwydlen amser cinio’r Neuadd Fwyd brydau llysieuol a fegan ffres am brisiau rhad yn ogystal â bar salad, diodydd oer, a diodydd poeth. Mae’r Neuadd Fwyd hefyd yn gweini dewisiad o fwydydd poeth ac oer, gan gynnwys tatws trwy’i crwyn, brechdanau a phaninis.

Caiff Ganolfan Gelfyddydau Aberystwyth ei leoli ar y prif gampws. Mae’n gartref i nifer o bethau cool, ond hoffwn dynnu sylw at Gaffi Canolfan y Celfyddydau yma. Maent bob amser yn ymdrechu i gynnal eu henw da am fwyd a gwasanaeth ardderchog.

Ar bwnc caffis, CAFFIBach yw caffi modern Prifysgol Aberystwyth wedi’ leoli yn yr adeilad IBERS newydd.

Mae’r fwydlen yn cynnwys brechdannau, bageti, saladau, dewisiad eang o ddiodydd poeth ac oer, a dewisiad o de, sudd ffres, cacenni hufen a bisgedi, a digon o ffrwythau a byrbrydau.

Cynigiai Siop Undeb y Myfyrwyr ddewisiad eang o fyrbrydau, diodydd oer, diodydd poeth ac amrywiaeth o gynnyrch bwyd, gan gynwys pasta, cŵn poeth, cynnyrch toes, a phastai.

Mae’r campws yn gartref i nifer o fannau clud i dreulio amser gyda dy ffrindiau. Mae gan Ganolfan Gelfyddydau Aberystwyth y siop Gelfyddydau a Chaffi Canolfan y Celfyddydau. Dangosai’r Ganolfan sioeau a digwyddiadau sinema’n aml drwy gydol y flwyddyn, yn ogystal â galerïau celf amrywiol. Mae yna ddigon o lefydd eistedd cyfforddus drwy gydol llawr uchaf y Ganolfan. Mae gan yr Undeb Myfyrwyr hefyd ddigon o lefydd eistedd, gyda bar a bwyty. Mae yna fwrdd pool a digon o le i astudio.

Mae’r Neuadd Fwyf hefyd yn le gwych i gael bwyd gyda ffrindiau, ac yn le gwych i astudio – unai ar ben dy hun neu gyda ffrindiau.

Mae gan y Brifysgol hefyd wasanaeth gyrfaoedd sy’n anelu i gynnal hygyrchedd. Mae’r Gwasanaeth Gyrfaoedd yn gyswllt uniongyrchol rhwng myfyrwyr, graddedigion a chyflogwyr i gefnogi chwilota am dalent, recriwtio a datblygu cyfleoedd busnes. Maent yn aml ar gael ar waelod y Llyfrgell Hugh Owen, wrth y grisiau.

Mae’r enw Aberystwyth yn gyfiethu i’r saesneg fel ‘Mouth of the Ystwyth’! mae di enwi fel hynny achos mae’n eistedd at y cydlylifiad o’r Afon Rheidol a’r Afon Ystwyth – ac yn gnweud enw sy’n addas iawn i’n papur newydd. Yr afon sy’n passio trwy Aber ydy’r Afon Rheidol, yn ogystal a hyn mi oedd yr Afon ystwyth eisioes yn mynd trwy’r dre tan gaeth yr harbwr i ail-adeiladu.

Yr Actor Taron Egerton, enwog am chwarae Eggsy Unwin yn y cyfres ffilmiau Kingsman, Wedi tyfu lan yn Aberystwyth !

Mewn pennod o’r podeldiad ‘Off the Menu’ mi wnaeth e nwi un o’i hoff ‘takeouts’ mewn yr holl byd fel Lip Lickin’ Chicken, sydd a’r stryd pier!

Fe gaeth Castell Aberystwyth ei adeilaidu yn greiddiol yn y hwyr 13eg gan Edward y 1af yn ystod gorysgyniad gan y saeson hefyd y concwest o Gymru. Oedd y gastell wedi ei ymosod a cael ei gosod gwarchae arno gan gwrthryfelwr Cymry llawer o weithiau, yr engrhaifft enwocaf gan Owain Glyndwr yn 1404 pryd cypiodd Glyndwr y castell yn ystod gwrthrhyfel cenedlaethol yn erbyn galwedigaeth y saeson.

Wedyn fe gaeth o i ail-gypio gan y Saeson pedwar blyndedd nes ymlaen, pwy waneth wedyn troi y gastell mewn i bathdy brenhinol tan gaeth y gastell y chwalu gan lluoedd Oliver Cromwell yn 1649. Heddiw, mae adfelion y gastell yn lle hyfryd i gerdded ar hyd ar lan y mor.

Mae prifysgol Aberystwyth yw’r henaf yng Nghymru. Mi wnaeth ei darddiad digwydd ymhlith hotel a oedd wedi ond hanner adeiladu a wnaeth wedi dod i fod yr hen goleg efo ond 25 myfyrwyr wedi cofrestru. Wedyn yn 1878, Cyflwynodd y cylchgrawn cyntaf i fyfyrwyr o’r enw ‘Y Ddraig’

Mae Aberystwyth yn gyfeildref efo 5 gwahanol tref Arklow yn Wicklow, Yr Iwerddon Kronberg yn Taunus, Yr Almaen Saint-Brieuc, yn Llydaw, Ffrainc Esquel, ym Matagonia, Yr Ariannyn Yosano yn Siapan!

Mae bae Ceredigion yn gynefin i fywyd gwyllt morol anghredadwy. Allech weld dolffin ‘bottlenose’ o fis Mai i fis Medi, felly gwnnech yn sicr i wylio’r don flaen o flaen cychod sy’n symud- dyma ble maen nhw’n hoffi syrffio!

Yn ogystal â hyn mae morloi ‘Atlantic Grey’ yn hoff iawn o’r moroedd o amgylch Aberystwyth oherwydd mae o un o’u hoff fannau bridio. Gwyliwch allan am eu cŵ n bach hyfryd â chôt wen o fis Medi i fis Rhagfyr.

Gaeaf yw’r tymor gorau i wylio’r ‘murmurations’ ffantastig gan fod y drudwy yn mudo I Gymru o rannau oera o Ewrop. Mae’r niferoedd o adar yn clwydu o dan y pier yn gallu fod tua 30,000

Mae’r llyfrgell genedlaethol Cymru yn dal dros 6.5 miliwn o lyfrau a chofnodion ac mae efo’r casgliad mwyaf o ddefnydd archifol dros yr holl o Gymru. Yna mae’r copi gwreiddiol o’r llyfr cyntaf erioed i gael ei argraffu yn y Gymraeg yn 1546, , Ynny lhyvyr hwnn a tua 300 llawysgrifau canol oesoedd.

Mae gan Brifysgol Aberystwyth un o'r alumni enwocaf yn y byd... Brenin Siarl III! Aeth Siarl i Brifysgol Aberystwyth am derm i ddysgu'r Gymraeg. Defnyddiodd Siarl ei sgiliau Cymraeg yn areithiau weithiau. Mae fe wedi byw ym Mhantycelyn, gallwch chi weld fersiwn mwy ddramatig yn The Crown ar Netflix!

Siopa Bwyd

Mae o fach yn ofnus bod yn glasfyfrwyr. Rwy’n cofio’r teimlad yn glir: symud mewn cwrdd ag pobl newydd, mynd i’ch darlith gyntaf a theimlo fel proffesiynol aeddfed, mae o’n hyfryd mewn rhai ffyrdd, ond mae pethau yn mynd yn bentwr cyn bo’ chi’n sylwi.

Yn dod o bersbectif rhywun yn y 3ydd blwyddyn, mae’n haws i ddweud bod Aber yn lle grêt i siopa. Mae gennych Lidl, Tesco a M&S, ond ymhlith yr archfarchnadoedd cadwyn, mae yna gorneli bach sydd yn cynnig y fargen gorau.

Mi wnaeth darganfod rhai ohonyn nhw gymryd amser lawer rhy hir i mi, dyma bwrpas fy erthygl ! cadwch ddarllen tra bod fi’n archwilio’r siopau gorau mae gan aber i gynnig, yn arbed chi arian ac amser !

Mae siopa am fwyd yn eithaf diflas, gad i mi fod yn onest. Mae o’n rhywbeth ni fyddech yn neidio i wneud, yn enwedig os ydych yn byw mewn llety myfyrwyr a dim wir yn ffansio'r wâc enfawr lan bryn Penglais efo eich bagiau llawn bwyd. Dros fy amser yn aber ar ôl llawer o wythnosau efo tasg siopa am fwyd heb ei gwneud, teimlaf fel fy mod i wedi meistroli fo.

Rydyn ni i gyd ar gyllideb; dyma’r peth mwyaf pwysig, ac nid yw’r economi Prydeinig yn 2025 yn llawer o help i chi. I mi, dysgais yn gyflym iawn bod ffrwythau a phethe ffres yw’r rhataf yn Lidl- ond nid trwy’r amser. At yr amser rwy’n ysgrifennu, mae llus 250g yn tesco yn sefyll at £2.50, pryd mae rhai lidl wedi am amser bach wedi cael ei phris i dorri o £2.85 i £2.65! fel oedolyn ifanc newydd, falle byddech yn meddwl pa wahaniaeth mae 35c yn gwneud, ond os prynech un pecyn o lus Lidl pob wythnos am y 40 wythnos lawn y flwyddyn academaidd, mae dod i £56 mwy nag os fyddech yn prynu at tesco !

Rwy’n addo, ni allech ddianc cerdded yn Aber, felly mae angen cynhaliaeth. Os ydych yn unrhyw beth fel mi ac yn caru wy wedi ffrio, mae wyau ar y list siopa pob wythnos. Yn bersonol rwy’n hoffi wy o ansawdd da o iâr a allai tybio bod nhw’n cael eu trin yn dda, ond mae’r pyrsiau yn mynd mwy mwy gwallgof pob Ebrill ac weithiau Tachwedd ar hap. Fel cymydog efo Tesco mae Marks and Spencers yn gyfleus iawn pryd mae’n gwerthu wyau maes maint cymysg at £1.45 pryd mae Tesco yn gwerthu nhw at £1.75 am yr un peth. Mae dofednod a physgod yn bwnc mwy dadleuol. Isod, rydw i wedi gwneud tabl sy'n dangos crynodeb cyflym i chi, y darllenydd, o gig a physgod gwerth am brisiau argymelledig cyfredol: Mae’n eithaf amlwg ble mae’r prisiau gorau fan hyn, ond pryd mae’n dod i eitemau groser eraill, mae'n well cael teimlad o ble rydych chi'n meddwl y byddwch chi'n arbed y mwyaf o arian.

Mae gan Aber llwyth o fusnesau bach, ac rwy’n meddwl bod hyn yw fy hoff beth am siopa yma.

Nid yw’r brif stryd wedi llenwi efo siopau cadwyn, rydyn ni’n ffodus i gael ystod eang o siopau lleol.

Yn wir mae gennyn ein siopau angenrheidiol: Poundland, Savers, Superdrug ayyb., ond mae’n fwy pwysig i ganolbwyntio ar siopau fel Dylan’s Den, Polly, Vintage Vibes, Her Dandy Wolf a mwy.

Mae Her Dandy Wolf wedi lleoli ar stryd y farchnad, rownd y gornel oddi Waterstones. Mae yn siop na allai dod o dan ond un label. Mae ganddyn nhw ddillad sydd wedi gwneud gan law dyddiaduron academaidd, gemwaith, ac ar eu llawr gwaelod ystafell yn llawn dillad hen ffasiwn. Wnes i ddim darganfod y siop yma tan fy 2ail flwyddyn yma, rwy’n drist ni wnes i ddarganfod o yn fwy diweddar. Mae gan y siop fach hon bopeth os ydych chi'n chwilio am anrheg i rywun neu i chi'ch hun. Mae hefyd gan Aber ystod arbennig o siopau elusen. Os ydych yn aelod o gymdeithas, bydd y rhain eich ffrind orau am noswaith allan efo thema neu ddigwyddiadau RAG. Os dim, mae dal wedi bod llawer o weithiau pryd dwi wedi darganfod rhywbeth ffasiynol iawn. Mae’r ‘British Red Cross’ y gorau am ffasiwn; oherwydd ei bartneriaeth efo ZARA, felly maen nhw’n gwerthu dillad newydd sbon efo pethe bach yn anghywir at brisiau rhesymol iawn! Os ydych mewn cwrs efo elfen fawr o ddarllen fel mi, bydd angen rhywle i chi cael llyfrau rhad. Mae gan Aberystwyth dau Oxfam: mae un yn gwerthu pethe i’r cartref a dillad, ac mae’r llall holl ymroddgar i lyfrau. Mae o un o fy hoff siopau yn y dre.

Mae ‘Little Devils’ yn lle sy’n canolbwyntio mwy ar fwyd, mae fy hoff le i astudio ydy ‘Coffee No.1’ mae’n cynnig awyrgylch croesawgar iawn efo llawer o fordydd a mannau i gysylltu eich gwefrau i, hefyd mae yna fwydlen aruthrol. Yn amlach, matcha latte yw fy archeb arferol, ond rwy'n argymell yn dda'r americano oer hefyd! Cadwa lygad drwy’r amser ar dy ddiod, a phaid byth a derbyn diod gan rywun diarth. Os wyt wedi gadael dy ddiod yn rhywle, peidio’i orffen yw’r peth fwyaf diogel i’w wneud.

Cadwa dy bethau’n ddiogel

Caria hanfodion fel dy ffôn, ID, arian parod, ac allweddau mewn lle diogel. Mae bag bach neu boced gyda sip yn ddelfrydol. Osgoi cario pethau gwerthfawr dwyt ddim eu hangen.

Bydda’n ymwybodol o dy amgylchedd

Aros ar strydoedd golau, osgoi llwybrau tywyll, ac ymddiried yn dy reddfau. Os yw rhywun neu rywbeth yn dy wneud yn anghyfforddus, gadawa’r sefyllfa.

Bydda’n ymwybodol o dy gyraeddiadau

Does ddim rhaid i ti yfed am fod pobl eraill yn yfed. Mae pawb yn prosesu alcohol yn wahanol.

Paid â gadael i bwysa gan ffrindiau dy wthio o dy fan cyfforddus.

Paid â rhannu diodydd

Er gall rannu diodydd gyda ffrind edrych yn ddiniwed, gall wasgaru germau (neu waeth). Mae pob amser berygl o golli diod, felly mae’n well peidio mentro.

Siarada gyda staff

Os oes rhywun yn dy wneud yn anghyfforddus neu wyt eisiau gadael sefyllfa, siarada gyda staff y bar neu ddryswyr y clwb.

Pan wyt yn cyrraedd adre: Yfa ddŵr

Ceisia yfed llond gwydr o ddŵr cyn mynd i dy wely. Bydd ddim yn gwella pen mawr, ond mi wneith helpu’r disychiad mae alcohol yn ei achosi.

Cysyllta gyda ffrindiau

Gad i rywun wybod dy fod adra’n saff. Gall neges “Adra’n saff!” sydyn sicrhau fod dy ffrindiau ddim yn poeni amdanat (yn enwedig os nid ydych yn byw gyda’ch gilydd).

Os wyt angen cymorth:

Gwasga a dalia’r botymau ochr a sŵn i weithredu’r SOS Argyfwng. Bydd hun yn tanio larwm ac yn cyfri i lawr cyn cysylltu â’r gwasanaethau brys.

Gall hefyd ei osod i gysylltu â dy gyswllt brys yn awtomatig.

Mae lawer o ffonau Android yn dy alluogi i danio neges argyfwng wrth bwyso’r botwm pŵer llawer o weithiau’n gyflym (tair neu pum gwaith fel arfer). Gwiria osodiadau dy ffôn i alluogi’r weithred yma.

Mae gwneud y gora o’r system bysus o fewn ac o amgylch Aberystwyth yn ffordd wych o ddod i nabod yr ardal. Pe bai ti’n byw yn y dref neu mewn llety Prifysgol, mae yna fysus yn mynd i fyny ac i lawr Bryn Penglais i gyrraedd dy holl anghenion trafnidiaeth. Mae defnyddio llwybrau bws fel T2/T28 TrawsCymru a’r T5 yn dy gludo rhwng y Brifysgol a’r dre. Mae Mid Wales Travel yn cynnig llwybr tebyg ar y 301. Os wyt eisiau trafaelio tŷ allan i’r dre, gall y T5 dy fynd i Aberaeron – tre arfordirol – a hyd yn oed pellach i Hwlffordd, tra bod gan y T2/T28 wasanaethau’n mynd pob awr i Fachynlleth. Mae trafeilio gyda bws hefyd yn ddarbodus, yn enwedig os wyt yn cymryd mantais o’r ‘mytravelpass’ i rai rhwng 16 a 21 oed, sy’n dy alluogi i gael ticedi sengl £1 a thicedi dydd am £3.
