Senior Sports Person of the Year Award

Robyn Suttor, Athletics

Robyn’s start to the 2018/2019 athletics season was at the World Masters indoor Championships in Malaga, Spain, September 2018. I will mention that Robyn was 59 at these Championships which meant that she was still competing against younger competitors. Robyn started the season following knee operations knowing it was going to be a long and tough journey ahead for the season to fulfil her ambition and be the best she can be.

Robyn competed in the 100m, 200m, 400m, 80m short hurdles, 300m long hurdles and the Pole Vault. Robyn didn’t progress to the finals in her events except the Pole Vault where she finished in 7th position. She was very happy with her performances as she was pain free for the first time in a long time. This was the beginning of her journey. Robyn worked hard to build her strength and flexibility. She never gave up. Such an inspiration to everyone, that you can achieve anything if you really put in the effort and believe in yourself. Robyn is an inspiration to all our athletes and all athletes that she coaches.

The NSW Masters Championships were held at Homebush in February 2019. Robyn won Gold in the Pole Vault, and 80m Hurdles (her pet event) Silver in the 400m sprint, and Bronze in the 100m and 200m sprint. A fantastic effort! Her times were improving, but she believed she had more to achieve.

Robyn travelled to Toruń in Poland in March to compete at the World Masters Indoor Championships. Robyn competed in the 60m Hurdles, 60m sprint, & 400m. Robyn was running well, and made it through to the final in the 60m (7th) and 60m Hurdles (Silver medal). Her time in the 60m Hurdles and 400m was a new 60+ Mounties Club Record and the fastest time she has recorded since being a Mounties athlete in the 60m Hurdles. A brilliant result!

Robyn, as well as being a dedicated athlete, is also passionate about coaching, imparting her wide knowledge and experience to up and coming athletes. Robyn is an ASSA (Academy of Sport Speed Australia) Coach, and currently coaches at SOPAC Homebush, with the intention of putting back into the sport, and building a strong Mounties athletics squad. Robyn is also a fitness expert. Robyn has penned her world of experience into a published book. Mounties Athletics Club believes that Robyn is a deserved candidate for the Mounties Senior Sports Person of the Year 2019.
