Bocce – Special Olympics Triglav

Special Olympics is a Worldwide organisation that provides year-round sports training and competition for children and adults with an intellectual disability. Through sport, they give athletes the opportunity to get fit, develop skills, make friends and be part of a community.

Special Olympics provides sport for all people with an intellectual disability, regardless of their skill level. They cater for athletes who just want to participate right up to elite athletes who want to compete on a world stage. And with local, state, national and international competition they give them plenty of opportunities to do their best. The training and competitions are almost entirely run by volunteers, who work tirelessly to deliver the program to 4500 athletes throughout Australia. Sydney West runs training in swimming, athletics, bocce, tennis and tenpin bowling. Special Olympics Sydney West Club runs a bocce training session at Triglav Club on the third Friday of each month with up to eight athletes attending. The athletes and their families gather together and share a meal at the club before they go onto the courts to train. The courts are prepared by Louis before training commences and Louis often gives the athletes tips from his vast bocce knowledge. Training finishes with everyone having coffee and cake, and usually watching football on the big screen. Sydney West appreciates the assistance given by Martha and Louis Magajna each month, and to the Triglav Club for providing the bocce facilities.
