Welcome

The new car market benefitted from a 12.4% boost in March as uptake rose to 357,103 units, according to the latest figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). This growth, in the most important month of the year for the new car market, builds on the March 2024 performance, where uptake rose by 10.4%. As a result, this year’s ‘new plate’ month represents the best March performance since 2019.

Fleet registrations rose 11.5%, while business buyers decreased by a marginal -0.3%. There was also a recovery in private buyer uptake following last year’s lacklustre performance, with a 14.5% rise in registrations.

All types of electrified vehicles recorded growth in the month, with hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) up 27.7%, plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) up 37.9%, and battery electric vehicles (BEVs) up a massive 43.2% as manufacturers incentivised uptake with significant discounting.2 As a result, March became the largest month ever for registrations of electric cars. Some 69,313 new cars reached the road as manufacturers sought to deliver ever more zero emission vehicles to drivers during the new ‘25 plate’ month, which usually accounts for around 16% of annual registrations and, as such, provides a strong indicator of likely overall annual performance.

While EV market share improved significantly on March 2024, at 19.4% it remains more than eight percentage points behind targets set by the ZEV Mandate. Furthermore, given the VED Expensive Car Supplement can now apply to eligible new EVs from 1 April – potentially raising ownership costs for most EV drivers by more than £2,000 over the next six years – the March EV performance will have been boosted by shrewd buyers seeking to get ahead of the taxation increase. This underscores the challenge facing manufacturers whose 2025 EV sales must accelerate to 28% share over the course of the year.

Manufacturers continue to incentivise EVs, incentives that cost the industry some £4.5 billion last year. Investment in product development is also bringing ever greater choice to consumers, with more than 130 EV models now available across every size category, and average range now reaching above 290 miles – more than double the average weekly mileage. Year to date, however, BEV uptake comprises 20.7% of the market, highlighting the importance of government incentives and mandatory targets for charge point rollout to reassure consumers and stimulate EV demand

MIKE HAWES, SMMT CHIEF EXECUTIVE

A welcome return to growth, and substantial growth at that, is a fillip for the industry. Moreover, with March being the best month ever for electric car registrations, there is reason for optimism. Manufacturers remain committed to the market decarbonisation the country and the environment demands, but we need sustained growth, not a short-term bubble driven by unsustainable manufacturer discounting and drivers rushing to beat a tax hike.

Without substantive government support for consumers, the current regulatory regime is undeliverable. A rapid response to the government consultation is therefore needed – one that adds flexibilities that reflect the natural level of demand and supports the industry to deliver growth in the face of a tough set of global challenges.

B-EV

A reinvention of the electric car for the everyday. Contemporary design meets effortless style, with freestyle doors and a spacious, premium interior. Experience a truly connected drive, coupling Mazda’s unique handling with intelligent e-Skyactiv electric drive technology, designed to take you wherever life leads. The new standard for an electric SUV.

The Mazda MX-30 R-EV is a plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHEV) unlike any other. Like a batteryelectric vehicle (BEV), the wheels are driven exclusively by electric motors. However, unlike other PHEVs, the petrol engine doesn’t power the wheels directly, but acts as a generator to charge the battery. That means you can enjoy uninterrupted electric propulsion wherever you go.

Mazda Electric Mileage Range options: the all-electric B-EV version has an official range of 124 miles with 0 C02, the R-EV plug-in hybrid (PHEV) has a smaller battery but adds a compact petrol engine and a 50-litre fuel tank to give a total range of around 400 miles and 22 CO2.

PAVING THE WAY

Hyundai Motor Company is bolstering its brand competitiveness in the Chinese market by introducing its IONIQ 5 N high-performance electric vehicle (EV), all-new SANTA FE and the new TUCSON at the 2024 Beijing International Automotive Exhibition.

The company is demonstrating its commitment to the Chinese market by bringing some of its most important and in-demand models in an exhibition space that spans 1,208 square meters and features zones for new models, Hyundai N and the company’s hydrogen technology capabilities.

The New Model Zone spotlights the IONIQ 5 N, IONIQ 5 N Drift Spec, the all-new SANTA FE and the SANTA FE XRT concept. Also on display are mass-produced models including the SONATA launched in China in March, the SONATA N-Line, the PALISADE SUV, and the new TUCSON.

The Hyundai N Zone showcases a range of N models, including vehicles like the ELANTRA N1 Cup Car, ELANTRA N and N Vision 74, and specialized N Performance Parts. The zone also features the N Racing Simulator that allows visitors to experience the dynamic driving feeling and technology of high-performance N vehicles.

In the Hydrogen Technology Zone, Hyundai Motor presents its ‘HTWO Grid’ solution which combines the capabilities of Hyundai Motor Group’s affiliates to encompass all stages of the hydrogen value chain, production-storage transportation-utilization. As a customized comprehensive hydrogen energy solution, it can be tailored to the needs of different users. The zone also exhibits the W2H (Waste-to-Hydrogen) diorama and hydrogen fuel cell EV NEXO’s China model, showcasing the conversion of hydrogen fuel cell systems and organic wastes into hydrogen, highlighting the company’s commitment to eco-friendly mobility.

The high-performance IONIQ 5 N, in particular, will be a major differentiator for Hyundai Motor in the world’s largest EV market. Notably, its debut in Beijing marks the first anniversary of the Hyundai N’s entry into China at the 2023 Shanghai Auto Show.

Since its global debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in July last year, IONIQ 5 N has generated a lot of buzz and garnered numerous accolades, including the 2023 TopGear.com Awards, the World Performance Car by World Car Awards, and the 2024 iF Design Awards.

As the Hyundai N’s first high-performance EV, IONIQ 5 N integrates Hyundai Motor’s advanced electrification technology to maximize driving performance. It serves as a symbolic model that showcases Hyundai Motor Way, the core electrification strategy that promotes flexible electrification and builds on the brand’s design heritage.

“IONIQ 5 N embodies the three key elements of the Hyundai N: Corner Rascal, Racetrack Capability and Everyday Sports Car,” said Till Wartenberg, Vice President and Head of N Brand and Motorsport at Hyundai Motor Company.

“This model opens new horizons for high-performance EVs, offering driving excitement that remains unchanged even in the era of electrification.”

Hyundai Motor plans to launch the IONIQ 5 N in China during the second half of the year, supported by specialized marketing campaigns that will allow more customers to experience the driving pleasure and high-performance technology championed by the Hyundai N.

Also att the Beijing Auto Show, Hyundai Motor also introduced the all-new SANTA FE and the new TUCSON to strengthen the company’s SUV lineup, joining the strategic Chinese model, MUFASA, that launched a year ago.

The all-new SANTA FE comes five years after the release of the fourth-generation model in the Chinese market in April 2019. The company plans to launch it in the second half of the year.

The all-new SANTA FE stands out with its strong presence, long wheelbase and distinctive silhouette characterized by a wide tailgate. It features the iconic H light design, H motif’s front bumper and a bold roofline that emphasizes its grand presence. Furthermore, the SUV offers a spacious and enjoyable living space that allows passengers to embrace outdoor life at any time. The large tailgate space, designed with a terrace concept, can be utilized in various ways to accommodate passengers’ lifestyles.

In addition, Hyundai Motor introduced the new TUCSON, which the company plans to launch in the first half of the year. Notably, the new Tucson has been tailored to meet the preferences of Chinese customers who favor larger vehicles. It features a 30 mm expanded length, which allows a spacious interior with 4,670 mm of length and a 2,755 mm wheelbase, enhancing its market appeal.

With SANTA FE, TUCSON and MUFASA, a strategic compact SUV launched in China in June last year, Hyundai Motor aims to cater to the diverse demands of Chinese consumers through its expanded SUV lineup.

BEST IN CLASS

The all-new Mazda CX-80 has been named Best LargeSUVbyEuroNCAPinitslatestseriesoftests

This prestigious recognition underscores Mazda’s commitment to safety and innovation by successfully completing the latest series of tests by Euro NCAP.

In 2024, Euro NCAP tested a total of 44 cars, with the Mazda CX-80 emerging as the top performer in the Large SUV category and achieving a close victory over the Audi Q6 e-tron. This recognition is a testament to Mazda’s dedication to providing the highest level of safety for its customers.

The Mazda CX-80 achieved an outstanding 92% score in Adult Occupancy, with full marks in both the Lateral and Rear Impact tests. It scored an impressive 88% in Child Occupancy, ensuring the highest level of protection for younger passengers. The vehicle secured an 84% score for Vulnerable Road Users, highlighting Mazda’s dedication to pedestrian and cyclist safety. Additionally, it achieved a 79% score in Safety Assist, demonstrating Mazda’s commitment to equipping its vehicles with the latest safety technologies.

The Mazda CX-80’s superior safety performance is complemented by its comfort, convenience, and versatility, making it a standout in the seven-seat SUV segment. Crafted in Japan, this flagship model embodies Mazda’s design and engineering excellence. Its exceptional safety ratings reflect Mazda’s dedication to customer safety. The fivestar rating is supported by Mazda’s Skyactiv Multi-Solution Scalable Architecture, enhancing driving dynamics with a front-engine, rearwheel-drive layout and rear-biased all-wheel drive. With three rows of seating, the CX-80 is the most spacious vehicle in Mazda’s European range, offering comfort, versatility, advanced technology, and Mazda’s driving performance.

Established in 1996 with the aim of improving vehicle safety, Euro NCAP annually awards the best-scoring cars with the “Best in Class” title, helping consumers choose the safest vehicles for their needs. To determine the ‘Best in Class’ rating, Euro NCAP calculates a weighted sum of scores in four safety evaluation areas: Adult Occupant, Child Occupant, Pedestrian and Safety Assist. This total is used to compare cars. Cars qualify for ‘Best in Class’ based on their ratings with standard safety equipment.

Arriving in the UK later this month, the all-new Mazda CX-80 is the new flagship of the Mazda line-up in Europe, sitting above the CX-60 in Mazda’s award-winning SUV range. Featuring three-row seating it’s the most spacious SUV ever offered by Mazda in Europe and with its high-quality cabin, technically advanced drivetrains and elegant design is created to challenge established premium brands in the European market.

Powered by the same engines as the Mazda CX-60, there is a choice of plug-in hybrid – which combines a Skyactiv-G 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with a 129kW electric motor and a 17.8 kWh high-capacity battery – or Mazda’s advanced in-line six-cylinder 254ps 3.3-litre e-Skyactiv D diesel engine. Across both powertrain options, the Mazda CX-80 is exclusively matched to all-wheel drive.

Dimensionally, the all-new Mazda CX-80 sees the wheelbase grow by 250mm compared to the CX-60 to deliver the space needed for a practical three-row interior. Furthermore, to ensure passenger comfort, the CX-80 is 26mm taller than the CX-60. However, with an identical width to the CX-60, the CX-80 retains familiar styling and nose on profile of its smaller sibling. default

Offered in the UK across five highly specified grades: Exclusive-Line, Homura, Takumi, Homura Plus and Takumi Plus with option packs to allow customers to tailor their seat layouts and equipment. With maximum customer choice in mind when the CX-80 arrives in the UK it will be offered with a choice of three middle row configurations: a three-person bench seat, two captain’s seats with a walk-through space or two captain’s seats with a fixed centre console. The seven-seat layout with the middle row-bench will be standard and is expected to be the biggest seller in the UK, while the two different six seat layout configurations will be optional.

Crucially, thanks to the CX-80’s increased wheelbase, shoulder room, headroom, hip point spacing and front to second row couple distance measurements have all increased compared to the CX-60. While full UK specification of the all-new Mazda CX-80 will be announced later, new to Mazda highlights include Alexa* in-car voice control of music, air-conditioning, navigation and third-party apps.

Viewed from the front the all-new Mazda CX-80 is visually matched to its CX-60 sibling but it’s in profile where the expression of elegance has been refined by taking full advantage of the CX-80’s increased length to create an imposing and cohesive design. The extended side windows feature thicker surrounds that are straighter at the D Pillar to emphasise the presence of the third-row of seating, while the seamlessly integrated roof rails further highlight the length of the CX-80’s cabin.

Based on Mazda’s safety philosophy, ‘Mazda Proactive Safety’, the all-new Mazda CX-80 provides a comfortable driving environment with outstanding visibility. It’s comprehensive range of advanced i-Activsense driver assistance systems – including Cruising & Traffic Support (CTS) with new Unresponsive Driver Support; Smart Brake Support with new Head-on collision mitigation; and Emergency Lane Keeping with new Head-on traffic avoidance assist – ensure active safety at the highest level, cementing the model’s five-star Euro NCAP safety rating and Best in Class Large SUV achievement.

An electrifying 2025 ahead for Nissan:

First to launch in 2025 will be the all-new Micra.

It will remain true to the DNA of its predecessors with a compelling mix of audacious style and simplicity in a compact package.

The new Micra was designed at Nissan Design Europe in London, using AmpR Small platform shared with Renault’s R5. It will be available with two battery options: 40 and 52kWh, providing a maximum range of over 400km. Sales of the new Micra will begin before the end of the year. It will be built at Ampere ElectriCity plant in Douai, France.

Third generation of Leaf EV to follow

The second new vehicle to be launched in Europe in 2025 also represents the return of a historic nameplate, LEAF – a badge forever associated with the pioneering EV which started the mass-market electric vehicle revolution when it was introduced in 2010.

The third generation of Leaf will attract buyers thanks to its eyecatching aerodynamic shape. It has been developed on Nissan’s

CMF-EV platform, architecture it shares with its larger sibling, the Ariya.

The European version of the new LEAF will be manufactured at Nissan’s state-of-the-art production facility in Sunderland, in the north-east of England. It forms part of Nissan’s EV36Zero project–a blueprint that will transform Sunderland Plant into a flagship EV hub, bringing together electric vehicles, renewable energy and battery production.

Nissan’s updated e-POWER will offer more refinement and efficiency

Having reinvented the hybrid powertrain when it was launched in 2022, Nissan’s unique e-POWER technology will also benefit from an upgrade this year. Following the Japanese principle of Kaizen –continuous improvement –the changes to the e-POWER system on Qashqai will deliver improvements to its emissions, efficiency and refinement, bringing the driving experience even closer to that of a full EV. Nearly 250,000 e-POWER equipped vehicles have been sold in Europe since its introduction.

Return of Micra as an EV.

Third generation LEAF to launch. And updated e-POWER for Qashqai.

Plus, in FY2026, third generation JUKE arrives as an EV.

Third generation JUKE to follow in FY26 as pure EV

Beyond 2025, Nissan’s engineers continue to develop the third generation of its JUKE compact crossover, which is scheduled for launch in FY2026 as an EV, based on the Hyper Punk concept car which was presented in October 2023 at the Japan Mobility Show.

Speaking about all the product updates in the coming years, Leon Dorssers, Regional Senior Vice President, Sales & Marketing, Nissan AMIEO (Africa, MiddleEast, India, Europe & Oceania) region, said: “The renewal of Nissan’s European line-up is the realisation of our strong plan to enhance and electrify our range in Europe. All the new models will share common Nissan DNA: striking design, technical innovation and intuitive technology – a combination of qualities which we are confident will attract new buyers to Nissan, as well as continuing to appeal to existing customers who already love how Nissan vehicles enrich their daily lives.”

David Moss, Senior Vice President, Region Research & Development, AMIEO, said: “As well as welcoming the return of the Micra as an EV and the third generation of our revolutionary Leaf, we’ve made significant steps with one of our most popular technologies. Having reinvented the hybrid with introduction of e-POWER by making it quieter and more responsive than a traditional hybrid, the forthcoming updates to e-POWER will make it even more efficient, more refined and closer overall to a pure EV-driving experience. It will remain the powertrain of choice for buyers who love the feel of driving electric, but don’t want to recharge.”

The announcement of new electrified models for Europe is part of a wider product update, with strategic new global model launches announced today across Japan, the US, China, Latin America Middle-East, India, Africa and Oceania.

Nissan’s ongoing electrified product offensive will be powered up with the launch of two allnew electric vehicles in 2025, as well as an update to one of its most innovative and popular technologies.
