The UK’s used car market grew by 5.5% to 7,643,180 transactions in 2024, according to the latest figures published today by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).
Marking eight quarters of continuous growth, the year saw 400,488 more vehicles change hands than in 2023, with growth in the new car market fuelling availability and wider choice within the used sector.1 Transactions rose in every month in 2024, as they did in 2023, with Q4 up 4.0% to 1,746,051 units.
The top three popular body types remained the same for another year, with superminis taking the top spot, accounting for one in three (32.3%) of all used cars sold in 2024. Lower medium held second place, with a 27.1% share of the market and dual purpose vehicles rounded off the podium, making up 15.9% of sales. Dual purpose recorded the strongest rise in volumes, up 10.7%, reflecting they are now the bestselling segment in the new car market. At the other end of the spectrum, luxury saloons represented just 0.5% of the market.
While grey remained most popular in the new car market, black cars were favoured among used car buyers, with more than 1.6 million (21.3%) opting for the colour. Grey was second, with a 17.6% share and blue third, taking 16.2% of sales. Combined, the top three hues accounted for more than half (55.1%) of all cars sold. Meanwhile, 5,171 buyers opted for a pink motor – an increase of 301 vehicles on 2023, while 4,659 maroon cars found new owners, pushing the shade up to displace cream, which saw 4,657 transactions, as the least popular colour. Turquoise cars saw the largest growth in 2024, up 11.2% to 8,266 cars, while grey saw the largest volume gain – up more than 117,000 units to 1.349 million.
Demand continued to soar for used battery electric cars (BEVs), rising some 57.4% to a record 188,382 units and achieving a new high for market share, at 2.5%, up from 1.7% in 2023 and 13 times larger than back in 2019. BEV share in Q4 was 2.7%, matching Q3’s performance.2 Sales of plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) and hybrids (HEVs) also grew, up 32.2% to 92,120 units and 39.3% to 306,114 units respectively.

The used car sector’s 25-month growth streak is good news for fleet renewal and for consumers benefitting from the greater choice filtering through from the new market. Record sales of second hand EVs also demonstrates strong appetite for these cutting-edge cars at lower price points. Ensuring ongoing growth, however, means maintaining that affordability, along with supply, which requires meaningful fiscal incentives to stimulate consumer demand for new EVs and removing the VED expensive car tax disincentive that risks dragging down used EV affordability for years to come. Partner collaboration enables the brand to further strengthen its European product lineup
Mazda Motor Europe, responsible for the European operations of Mazda Motor Corporation (Mazda), today announced the introduction of “Mazda6e,” the all-new Battery EV (BEV) in Europe.
Premiered at the Brussels Motor Show 2025 in Belgium on January 10, the Mazda6e will go on sale summer of this year.
Mazda6e is the European version of the Mazda EZ-6, the midsize sedan BEV unveiled at the Beijing Auto Show in April 2024. e all-new BEV is designed to attain the driving performance and functionality to meet European customers’ needs.
e Mazda6e was developed through the collaboration between Mazda and Changan Automobile Co., Ltd, Mazda’s 20-year partner in China. e Mazda6e BEV boasts Mazda’s signature design, cra smanship and driving performance, while coming with Changan Automobile’s electri cation and smart-cabin technologies.
Based on the design theme, “Authentic Modern,” the Mazda6e’s simple and owing coupe form expresses the automobile’s inherent charm coupled with a novelty unique to electric vehicles. e meticulouslytuned braking and handling performance, which respond linearly to driver input, produce Jinba Ittai—a sense of “car and driver as one.” e Mazda6e also features smart functions, including an intelligent drive system that provides support for the driver as well as accident mitigation technology and smart cabin with voice,
touch, and gesture controls, all of which is aimed to raise the bar for safety and convenience.

This prestigious recognition underscores Mazda’s commitment to safety and innovation by successfully completing the latest series of tests by Euro NCAP.
In 2024, Euro NCAP tested a total of 44 cars, with the Mazda CX-80 emerging as the top performer in the Large SUV category and achieving a close victory over the Audi Q6 e-tron. This recognition is a testament to Mazda’s dedication to providing the highest level of safety for its customers.
The Mazda CX-80 achieved an outstanding 92% score in Adult Occupancy, with full marks in both the Lateral and Rear Impact tests. It scored an impressive 88% in Child Occupancy, ensuring the highest level of protection for younger passengers. The vehicle secured an 84% score for Vulnerable Road Users, highlighting Mazda’s dedication to pedestrian and cyclist safety. Additionally, it achieved a 79% score in Safety Assist, demonstrating Mazda’s commitment to equipping its vehicles with the latest safety technologies.
The Mazda CX-80’s superior safety performance is complemented by its comfort, convenience, and versatility, making it a standout in the seven-seat SUV segment. Crafted in Japan, this flagship model embodies Mazda’s design and engineering excellence. Its exceptional safety ratings reflect Mazda’s dedication to customer safety. The fivestar rating is supported by Mazda’s Skyactiv Multi-Solution Scalable Architecture, enhancing driving dynamics with a front-engine, rearwheel-drive layout and rear-biased all-wheel drive. Established in 1996 with the aim of improving vehicle safety, Euro NCAP annually awards the best-scoring cars with the “Best in Class” title, helping consumers choose the safest vehicles for their needs. To determine the ‘Best in Class’ rating, Euro NCAP calculates a weighted sum of scores in four safety evaluation areas: Adult Occupant, Child Occupant, Pedestrian and Safety Assist. This total is used to compare cars. Cars qualify for ‘Best in Class’ based on their ratings with standard safety equipment.
Arriving in the UK later this month, the all-new Mazda CX-80 is the new flagship of the Mazda line-up in Europe, sitting above the CX-60 in Mazda’s award-winning SUV range. Featuring three-row seating it’s the most spacious SUV ever offered by Mazda in Europe and with its high-quality cabin, technically advanced drivetrains and elegant design is created to challenge established premium brands in the European market.
Powered by the same engines as the Mazda CX-60, there is a choice of plug-in hybrid – which combines a Skyactiv-G 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with a 129kW electric motor and a 17.8 kWh high-capacity battery – or Mazda’s advanced in-line six-cylinder 254ps 3.3-litre e-Skyactiv D diesel engine. Across both powertrain options, the Mazda CX-80 is exclusively matched to all-wheel drive.
Dimensionally, the all-new Mazda CX-80 sees the wheelbase grow by 250mm compared to the CX-60 to deliver the space needed for a practical three-row interior. Furthermore, to ensure passenger comfort, the CX-80 is 26mm taller than the CX-60. However, with an identical width to the CX-60, the CX-80 retains familiar styling and nose on profile of its smaller sibling. default
Offered in the UK across five highly specified grades: Exclusive-Line, Homura, Takumi, Homura Plus and Takumi Plus with option packs to allow customers to tailor their seat layouts and equipment. With maximum customer choice in mind when the CX-80 arrives in the UK it will be offered with a choice of three middle row configurations: a three-person bench seat, two captain’s seats with a walk-through space or two captain’s seats with a fixed centre console. The seven-seat layout with the middle row-bench will be standard and is expected to be the biggest seller in the UK, while the two different six seat layout configurations will be optional.
Crucially, thanks to the CX-80’s increased wheelbase, shoulder room, headroom, hip point spacing and front to second row couple distance measurements have all increased compared to the CX-60. While full UK specification of the all-new Mazda CX-80 will be announced later, new to Mazda highlights include Alexa* in-car voice control of music, air-conditioning, navigation and third-party apps.
Viewed from the front the all-new Mazda CX-80 is visually matched to its CX-60 sibling but it’s in profile where the expression of elegance has been refined by taking full advantage of the CX-80’s increased length to create an imposing and cohesive design. The extended side windows feature thicker surrounds that are straighter at the D Pillar to emphasise the presence of the third-row of seating, while the seamlessly integrated roof rails further highlight the length of the CX-80’s cabin.
Based on Mazda’s safety philosophy, ‘Mazda Proactive Safety’, the all-new Mazda CX-80 provides a comfortable driving environment with outstanding visibility. Hyundai Motor Company is bolstering its brand competitiveness in the Chinese market by introducing its IONIQ 5 N high-performance electric vehicle (EV), all-new SANTA FE and the new TUCSON at the 2024 Beijing International Automotive Exhibition.
The company is demonstrating its commitment to the Chinese market by bringing some of its most important and in-demand models in an exhibition space that spans 1,208 square meters and features zones for new models, Hyundai N and the company’s hydrogen technology capabilities.
The New Model Zone spotlights the IONIQ 5 N, IONIQ 5 N Drift Spec, the all-new SANTA FE and the SANTA FE XRT concept. Also on display are mass-produced models including the SONATA launched in China in March, the SONATA N-Line, the PALISADE SUV, and the new TUCSON.
The Hyundai N Zone showcases a range of N models, including vehicles like the ELANTRA N1 Cup Car, ELANTRA N and N Vision 74, and specialized N Performance Parts. The zone also features the N Racing Simulator that allows visitors to experience the dynamic driving feeling and technology of high-performance N vehicles.
In the Hydrogen Technology Zone, Hyundai Motor presents its ‘HTWO Grid’ solution which combines the capabilities of Hyundai Motor Group’s affiliates to encompass all stages of the hydrogen value chain, production-storage transportation-utilization. As a customized comprehensive hydrogen energy solution, it can be tailored to the needs of different users. The zone also exhibits the W2H (Waste-to-Hydrogen) diorama and hydrogen fuel cell EV NEXO’s China model, showcasing the conversion of hydrogen fuel cell systems and organic wastes into hydrogen, highlighting the company’s commitment to eco-friendly mobility.
The high-performance IONIQ 5 N, in particular, will be a major differentiator for Hyundai Motor in the world’s largest EV market. Notably, its debut in Beijing marks the first anniversary of the Hyundai N’s entry into China at the 2023 Shanghai Auto Show.
Since its global debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in July last year, IONIQ 5 N has generated a lot of buzz and garnered numerous accolades, including the 2023 TopGear.com Awards, the World Performance Car by World Car Awards, and the 2024 iF Design Awards.
As the Hyundai N’s first high-performance EV, IONIQ 5 N integrates Hyundai Motor’s advanced electrification technology to maximize driving performance. It serves as a symbolic model that showcases Hyundai Motor Way, the core electrification strategy that promotes flexible electrification and builds on the brand’s design heritage.
“IONIQ 5 N embodies the three key elements of the Hyundai N: Corner Rascal, Racetrack Capability and Everyday Sports Car,” said Till Wartenberg, Vice President and Head of N Brand and Motorsport at Hyundai Motor Company.

Hyundai Motor plans to launch the IONIQ 5 N in China during the second half of the year, supported by specialized marketing campaigns that will allow more customers to experience the driving pleasure and high-performance technology championed by the Hyundai N.
Also att the Beijing Auto Show, Hyundai Motor also introduced the all-new SANTA FE and the new TUCSON to strengthen the company’s SUV lineup, joining the strategic Chinese model, MUFASA, that launched a year ago.
The all-new SANTA FE comes five years after the release of the fourth-generation model in the Chinese market in April 2019. The company plans to launch it in the second half of the year.
The all-new SANTA FE stands out with its strong presence, long wheelbase and distinctive silhouette characterized by a wide tailgate. It features the iconic H light design, H motif’s front bumper and a bold roofline that emphasizes its grand presence. Furthermore, the SUV offers a spacious and enjoyable living space that allows passengers to embrace outdoor life at any time. The large tailgate space, designed with a terrace concept, can be utilized in various ways to accommodate passengers’ lifestyles.
In addition, Hyundai Motor introduced the new TUCSON, which the company plans to launch in the first half of the year. Notably, the new Tucson has been tailored to meet the preferences of Chinese customers who favor larger vehicles. It features a 30 mm expanded length, which allows a spacious interior with 4,670 mm of length and a 2,755 mm wheelbase, enhancing its market appeal.
With SANTA FE, TUCSON and MUFASA, a strategic compact SUV launched in China in June last year, Hyundai Motor aims to cater to the diverse demands of Chinese consumers through its expanded SUV lineup.

The sportiest electric Volkswagen Start of pre-sales for the ID.3
Volkswagen is upping the ante by launching a new, even sportier version of the ID.3 GTX. In addition to the ID.3 GTX, which delivers 210 kW (285 PS), the new ID.3 GTX Performance with 240 kW (326 PS) is now also available to order. This means that the electric compact sports car is equipped with Volkswagen’s most powerful electric drive motor. Both GTX versions effortlessly convert their power into traction on the rear axle. The body and chassis layout offers significant benefits here: with the new 79 kWh battery (net) located in the sandwich floor and precisely in the centre of the vehicle, this design offers a sporty low centre of gravity and ideal axle load distribution for driving dynamics and vehicle handling that guarantees plenty of fun.

“With its spontaneous and superior power delivery, the new ID.3 GTX Performance is for me the electric counterpart to our sporty compact car icon, the Golf GTI Clubsport. Of course, an electric drive and a turbocharged petrol engine each have their own unique character. Yet the ID.3 GTX Performance and the Golf GTI Clubsport share the same fascinating lightness when they accelerate.”
Powerful engine, large battery and high charging capacity. The ID.3 GTX Performance is the first model to feature an enhanced version of the Volkswagen Performance drive system. Here the output could be increased from 210 kW (ID.3 GTX) to 240 kW (ID.3 GTX Performance). The electric drive motor produces a maximum torque of 545 Nm for both output ratings –thus exceeding the drive power of the most powerful Volkswagen V6 turbocharged engines.
In the GTX Performance version, the ID.3 packs a powerful punch, sprinting from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.7 seconds. The drive is not electronically limited until 200 km/h –a first for the ID. family. The energy comes from a 79 kWh lithium-ion battery (net), which absorbs up to 185 kW of power at DC quickcharging stations thanks to innovative charging and thermal management with battery pre-conditioning.
The battery can be charged from 10 to 80 per cent again in about 26 minutes. The ID.3 GTX Performance’s WLTP range is up to 601 km.
Sports DCC for the topof-the-line version. The GTX-specific running gear is equipped with stronger stabilisers and is tuned to the drive system’s very high performance.
The basic layout consists of a MacPherson front axle and a five-link rear axle with a sophisticated guidance system. The progressive steering system, which has been adapted to the ID.3 GTX, is fitted as standard.
The ID.3 GTX Performance can also be equipped with the modified Sport DCC
adaptive chassis control. The newly configured Vehicle Dynamics Manager uses more sensor signals than before. As a result, the system is able to better detect how the wheels and body are moving in order to control the shock absorbers accordingly by means of refined algorithms. This ensures precise handling and perfect roadholding – and not just in sporty driving situations.
Sporty GTX design. The ID.3 GTX and the new ID.3 GTX Performance differ from the other models in the product line with their special design elements. The GTX-specific front bumper features a new independent black air intake in a diamond-style design and customised signature light. The 20inch Skagen GTX wheel rim is available completely in black as an option. A host of GTX-specific features also customise the vehicle interior. Simple and intuitive operation. The new ID.3 GTX Performance comes with the latest generation of software and infotainment system with a 12.9inch (32.8-centimetre) display, the IDA voice assistant with ChatGPT and an improved, intuitive
operating concept. In addition, optional features such as the enhanced augmented reality head-up display, a redesigned Wellness app and the premium sound system from Harman Kardon are available.
Standard systems. The ID.3 GTX already has a wide range of state-ofthe-art assist systems as standard to ensure comfort and safety on board. These include the cruise control system (can be extended to Adaptive Cruise Control ACC by an upgrade), Autonomous Emergency Braking (Front Assist) with pedestrian and cyclist monitoring, lane keeping system Lane Assist, oncoming vehicle braking when turning function and Dynamic Road Sign Display. Also included as standard: the Car2X traffic hazard alert function. Systems such as Connected Travel Assist with online data utilisation are optionally available. This system enables assisted longitudinal and lateral guidance over the entire speed range as well as assisted lane changing on motorways. In addition, lane guidance without detected lane markings is possible if online data is available.
