The new car market benefitted from a 12.4% boost in March as uptake rose to 357,103 units, according to the latest figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). This growth, in the most important month of the year for the new car market, builds on the March 2024 performance, where uptake rose by 10.4%. As a result, this year’s ‘new plate’ month represents the best March performance since 2019.
Fleet registrations rose 11.5%, while business buyers decreased by a marginal -0.3%. There was also a recovery in private buyer uptake following last year’s lacklustre performance, with a 14.5% rise in registrations.
All types of electrified vehicles recorded growth in the month, with hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) up 27.7%, plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) up 37.9%, and battery electric vehicles (BEVs) up a massive 43.2% as manufacturers incentivised uptake with significant discounting.2As a result, March became the largest month ever for registrations of electric cars. Some 69,313 new cars reached the road as manufacturers sought to deliver ever more zero emission vehicles to drivers during the new ‘25 plate’ month, which usually accounts for around 16% of annual registrations and, as such, provides a strong indicator of likely overall annual performance.
While EV market share improved significantly on March 2024, at 19.4% it remains more than eight percentage points behind targets set by the ZEV Mandate. Furthermore, given the VED Expensive Car Supplement can now apply to eligible new EVs from 1 April – potentially raising ownership costs for most EV drivers by more than £2,000 over the next six years – the March EV performance will have been boosted by shrewd buyers seeking to get ahead of the taxation increase. This underscores the challenge facing manufacturers whose 2025 EV sales must accelerate to 28% share over the course of the year.
Manufacturers continue to incentivise EVs, incentives that cost the industry some £4.5 billion last year. Investment in product development is also bringing ever greater choice to consumers, with more than 130 EV models now available across every size category, and average range now reaching above 290 miles – more than double the average weekly mileage.Year to date, however, BEV uptake comprises 20.7% of the market, highlighting the importance of government incentives and mandatory targets for charge point rollout to reassure consumers and stimulate EV demand

A welcome return to growth, and substantial growth at that, is a fillip for the industry. Moreover, with March being the best month ever for electric car registrations, there is reason for optimism. Manufacturers remain committed to the market decarbonisation the country and the environment demands, but we need sustained growth, not a short-term bubble driven by unsustainable manufacturer discounting and drivers rushing to beat a tax hike.
Without substantive government support for consumers, the current regulatory regime is undeliverable. A rapid response to the government consultation is therefore needed – one that adds flexibilities that reflect the natural level of demand and supports the industry to deliver growth in the face of a tough set of global challenges.

MINI goes the extra mile for Buttle UK children’s charity.
120 MINIs took part in charity road rally from MINI Plant Oxford to BMW Group Plant Swindon. • Rally marks fifth consecutive year MINI Plant Oxford has supported. • Event served as a fundraiser for Buttle UK, a charity dedicated to helping children in crisis across the UK
MINI has once again demonstrated its commitment to supporting communities through the annual ‘Mile of MINIs’ charity road rally. Taking place on 27th April, the rally saw over 120 MINIs of varying ages, colours and models drive in a mile-long convoy from MINI Plant Oxford to BMW Group Plant Swindon.
Raising funds for Buttle UK – a charity focused on providing support to children and young people facing financial hardship and challenging social issues - the annual rally is organised and run by The Italian Job; an organisation dedicated to raising money for children’s charities, while celebrating all things MINI. First run in 1990, The Italian Job has raised and donated over £3 million
to children focused charities to date.
As a key supporter of the event, MINI Plant Oxford have been involved since 2021, acting as the starting point of the rally ever since. Prior to setting off on convoy, participants had the opportunity to explore the on-site museum, which showcases a range of MINI models from past and present. Highlights included the 1914 Morris Oxford Bullnose, the first car ever built at the Plant, and a dual-steering wheel R53 MINI Cooper used as a stunt car in the 2003 remake of The Italian Job. The new MINI family, including the new MINI John Cooper Works, MINI Cooper 5-door and MINI Cooper Convertible, were also available for participants to see on the day.
Upon arrival at BMW Group Plant Swindon, the convoy lined up for a spectacular display before the grand total of £7,000 raised for Buttle UK was announced.

Of course, an electric drive and a turbocharged petrol engine each have their own unique character. Yet the ID.3 GTX Performance and the Golf GTI Clubsport share the same fascinating lightness when they accelerate.”
Powerful engine, large battery and high charging capacity. The ID.3 GTX Performance is the first model to feature an enhanced version of the Volkswagen Performance drive system. Here the output could be increased from 210 kW (ID.3 GTX) to 240 kW (ID.3 GTX Performance). The electric drive motor produces a maximum torque of 545 Nm for both output ratings –thus exceeding the drive power of the most powerful Volkswagen V6 turbocharged engines.
In the GTX Performance version, the ID.3 packs a powerful punch, sprinting from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.7 seconds. The drive is not electronically limited until 200 km/h –a first for the ID. family. The energy comes from a 79 kWh lithium-ion battery (net), which absorbs up to 185 kW of power at DC quickcharging stations thanks to innovative charging and thermal management with battery pre-conditioning.
The battery can be charged from 10 to 80 per cent again in about 26 minutes. The ID.3 GTX Performance’s WLTP range is up to 601 km. Sports DCC for the topof-the-line version. The GTX-specific running gear is equipped with stronger stabilisers and is tuned to the drive system’s very high performance. The basic layout consists of a MacPherson front axle and a five-link rear axle with a sophisticated guidance system. The progressive steering system, which has been adapted to the ID.3 GTX, is fitted as standard.
The ID.3 GTX Performance can also be equipped with the modified Sport DCC
adaptive chassis control. The newly configured Vehicle Dynamics Manager uses more sensor signals than before. As a result, the system is able to better detect how the wheels and body are moving in order to control the shock absorbers accordingly by means of refined algorithms. This ensures precise handling and perfect roadholding – and not just in sporty driving situations.
Sporty GTX design. The ID.3 GTX and the new ID.3 GTX Performance differ from the other models in the product line with their special design elements. The GTX-specific front bumper features a new independent black air intake in a diamond-style design and customised signature light. The 20inch Skagen GTX wheel rim is available completely in black as an option. A host of GTX-specific features also customise the vehicle interior.
Simple and intuitive operation. The new ID.3 GTX Performance comes with the latest generation of software and infotainment system with a 12.9inch (32.8-centimetre) display, the IDA voice assistant with ChatGPT and an improved, intuitive
operating concept. In addition, optional features such as the enhanced augmented reality head-up display, a redesigned Wellness app and the premium sound system from Harman Kardon are available.
Standard systems. The ID.3 GTX already has a wide range of state-ofthe-art assist systems as standard to ensure comfort and safety on board. These include the cruise control system (can be extended to Adaptive Cruise Control ACC by an upgrade), Autonomous Emergency Braking (Front Assist) with pedestrian and cyclist monitoring, lane keeping system Lane Assist, oncoming vehicle braking when turning function and Dynamic Road Sign Display. Also included as standard: the Car2X traffic hazard alert function. Systems such as Connected Travel Assist with online data utilisation are optionally available. This system enables assisted longitudinal and lateral guidance over the entire speed range as well as assisted lane changing on motorways. In addition, lane guidance without detected lane markings is possible if online data is available.
Established in 1996 with the aim of improving vehicle safety, Euro NCAP annually awards the best-scoring cars with the “Best in Class” title, helping consumers choose the safest vehicles for their needs. To determine the ‘Best in Class’ rating, Euro NCAP calculates a weighted sum of scores in four safety evaluation areas: Adult Occupant, Child Occupant, Pedestrian and Safety Assist. This total is used to compare cars. Cars qualify for ‘Best in Class’ based on their ratings with standard safety equipment.
Arriving in the UK later this month, the all-new Mazda CX-80 is the new flagship of the Mazda line-up in Europe, sitting above the CX-60 in Mazda’s award-winning SUV range. Featuring three-row seating it’s the most spacious SUV ever offered by Mazda in Europe and with its high-quality cabin, technically advanced drivetrains and elegant design is created to challenge established premium brands in the European market.
Powered by the same engines as the Mazda CX-60, there is a choice of plug-in hybrid – which combines a Skyactiv-G 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with a 129kW electric motor and a 17.8 kWh high-capacity battery – or Mazda’s advanced in-line six-cylinder 254ps 3.3-litre e-Skyactiv D diesel engine. Across both powertrain options, the Mazda CX-80 is exclusively matched to all-wheel drive.
Dimensionally, the all-new Mazda CX-80 sees the wheelbase grow by 250mm compared to the CX-60 to deliver the space needed for a practical three-row interior. Furthermore, to ensure passenger comfort, the CX-80 is 26mm taller than the CX-60. Offered in the UK across five highly specified grades: Exclusive-Line, Homura, Takumi, Homura Plus and Takumi Plus with option packs to allow customers to tailor their seat layouts and equipment. With maximum customer choice in mind when the CX-80 arrives in the UK it will be offered with a choice of three middle row configurations: a three-person bench seat, two captain’s seats with a walk-through space or two captain’s seats with a fixed centre console. The seven-seat layout with the middle row-bench will be standard and is expected to be the biggest seller in the UK, while the two different six seat layout configurations will be optional.
Crucially, thanks to the CX-80’s increased wheelbase, shoulder room, headroom, hip point spacing and front to second row couple distance measurements have all increased compared to the CX-60. While full UK specification of the all-new Mazda CX-80 will be announced later, new to Mazda highlights include Alexa* in-car voice control of music, air-conditioning, navigation and third-party apps.
Viewed from the front the all-new Mazda CX-80 is visually matched to its CX-60 sibling but it’s in profile where the expression of elegance has been refined by taking full advantage of the CX-80’s increased length to create an imposing and cohesive design. The extended side windows feature thicker surrounds that are straighter at the D Pillar to emphasise the presence of the third-row of seating, while the seamlessly integrated roof rails further highlight the length of the CX-80’s cabin.
Based on Mazda’s safety philosophy, ‘Mazda Proactive Safety’, the all-new Mazda CX-80 provides a comfortable driving environment with outstanding visibility.
