HELLO

Welcome to the May issue of LifeStyle Wales . This edition has a strong focus on spring cleaning and ideas to transform your home and garden .

For those looking to transform their kitchen this spring, Designer Ceri Hill of Chalkhouse Kitchens, talks to us about one of her most recent conversions, which has the most beautiful wood flooring.

Pergolas are all the rage at the moment, and it’s easy to see why as they elevate family gatherings, BBQs, and serene coffee moments due to their sleek and innovative design. Luke Sheppard from George Street Furnishers gives us an in-depth description on why they are so popular.

My wife Victoria absolutely loves Enid Blyton, so much so, that our daughter Jojo has followed in her footsteps. Both of them will be pleased to discover that Fable England has just launched a jewellery range featuring watercolours of the author’s most beloved characters - The World of Peter Rabbit . Take a look at some of these beautiful pieces on pages 18-19.

We pay our monthly visit to Venetia Steele, where we catch up with champion Hope Rescue fund raiser, to see how she’s getting on with her yearly £20k challenge. There’s some good news and there’s some bad news, find out more on page 26.

Like many people, I suffer terribly with my sleep and cannot switch off easily to allow me to get a good night’s rest, but after speaking to Dr Ros Jabar, she’s given me some great tips to help me, which you can find on page 36.

I also take a trip with my family to the Llangynidr Moors , where we sample some fantastic rustic homemade pizza, which has been cooked to perfection by an award-winning mobile food vendor. Check out my son Teddy eating a slice on page 45!

That’s enough waffle from me, turn the page and enjoy!

Mike

Finally, thank you to all of our advertisers and contributors for your input and support in making this edition the luxury read that it iswe look forward to working with you throughout the rest of 2025.

THE ART OF ALFRESCO

Outdoorlivingwithindoorluxury

As the seasons shift and the outdoors begin to beckon, there’s never been a better time to redefine your outdoor space. At Cult, we believe your home shouldn’t end at the door.

With The Art of Alfresco, our new garden furniture campaign, we invite you to blur the lines between indoors and out—with considered design, enduring quality, and effortless style.

Whether you’re entertaining friends under the open sky or embracing a quiet solo moment, our new garden collections are designed to elevate the experience.

The Enzo Lounge Set offers modular luxury at its best. Minimalist yet inviting, the collection features four generously sized lounge chairs that link together to create a tailored 2-, 3-, or 4-seater arrangement.

It’s accompanied by a sleek, matching coffee table, all wrapped in a soft taupe iron frame and striped upholstery.

Designed with both visual appeal and resilience in mind, Enzo is crafted from UV-protected and water-resistant materials—so it looks great and performs beautifully, season after season.

For those craving colour and comfort, look no further than the Dante Garden Lounge Set. With a chic taupe aluminium frame and striking burgundy chequerboard cushions, Dante brings a bold, contemporary edge to outdoor lounging.

The set includes a sofa, two armchairs, and a coffee table, all featuring plush cushions for deep, laid-back relaxation.

Its flexible design means you can easily position it to soak up the sun or retreat into the shade.

Both sets strike a perfect balance of form, function, and feeling, staying true to Cult’s belief that great design should never compromise on comfort.

The Art of Alfresco is more than a garden refresh. It’s a mindset. A return to slow living. A celebration of moments, big and small, under the open sky.

This is outdoor living, the Cult way.

BEAUTIFULLY CRAFTED

LeadDesigner,CeriHill,ofChalkhouseKitchens takesusthroughoneofhermostrecentdesigns

Taking out a central supporting wall opened up the whole of the back of the house in this spacious Victorian semi detached house.

Installing full width glazed doors along the back wall brought light and views over the generous garden.

The kitchen was designed to make the most of these views when cooking and prepping food for the family.

A small cupboard, that was originally accessed from the hallway behind, was opened up on the kitchen side, fitted with a matching period door which created a bespoke walk in pantry for ample dry food storage, all finished in oak to pick up the colour of the warm herringbone floor used throughout the space.

A large, feature glazed dresser on the side wall, painted to match the main run, provides extra storage for glassware and crockery, with the glass doors fitted with cute turn latch handles in aged brass, matching the beautiful tap and aged brass cup and knob handles used in the rest of the kitchen.

A full height fridge and matching full height freezer sit side by side to give maximum fresh food storage to the left of the main sink run, which has a feature shelf above for displaying decorative objects and photos.

A full height glazed window looking over the side courtyard garden was installed to allow more light into the back of the room near the fridge and freezer cupboards.

In the island there is a wide five burner gas hob, still the go-to-choice for professional chefs, with side by side ovens beneath, including a fanoven, combi microwave oven and warming drawer, which gives the practicality of a range cooker in a more flexible, contemporary setup.

The adjoining utility/laundry room, fitted in furniture to match the kitchen, is designed to cater for the needs of a large family, with hanging space for airing clothes, open shelving with baskets for storing folded, dried clothes and a built in cupboard to neatly hide the essential, but less than attractive, large boiler system needed for the generously sized house.

SOLID AND SECURE

Aninvaluableadditiontoanyproperty,ensuring

Crime is often cited as a stand out reason for homeowners to move property, so it’s important that you get a door design that protects you from potential intruders. The Secured by Design (SBD) scheme has been put in place as an initiative to ‘design out crime’, responding to modern statistics and techniques to ensure cutting-edge protection.

Justin Maunder, Director of Vale Composite Doors, spoke to us about the benefits of the SBD scheme. Here’s what he had to say: “Our Secured by Design composite doors offer a standard of protection that ensures the property they are installed into are 75% less likely to be burgled, showing a reduction of 25% in criminal damage.”

“All of our doors are glazed with 4mm toughened safety glass, either double or triple glazed. This glazing design meets BSEN1279 standards for complete door protection.

“Our doors are renowned for their strength and security, our 48mm thick cross-bonded veneered laminated solid timber core delivers unrivalled strength and dimensional stability and is a natural choice for high security, providing our homeowners peace of mind.

“Many composite doors on the market utilise a traditional ‘stile and rail’ internal subframe, which offers inferior performance when compared to the our solid LVL core. This is important to note when you’re looking for a new door for your home.

“We understand the importance of feeling safe in your home, which is why we only offer you the most secured designs that will not only protect, but compliment the aesthetic of your home too.

“Why not have a go at designing your own dream composite door using our exciting HomeView Door Designer? Simply upload an external photograph of the door you wish to replace and add your chosen design to the image. This is a great way to see what the finished product could look like.”

EVEN THE SMALLEST ONE CAN CHANGE THE WORLD

ThemagicofBeatrixPotter’sworldfamous watercoloursarebroughttolifeinjewelleryform

In a celebration of storytelling and nostalgia, British heritage accessories brand Fable England has launched an exclusive jewellery collection with THE WORLD OF PETER RABBIT™

Inspired by tales of nature from the British countryside, Fable England’s unique hand-painted jewellery charms caught the attention of the licence team at Penguin Ventures , as the obvious fit to celebrate the Wonderful World of Peter Rabbit in delicate jewellery form.

Based on Beatrix Potter’s much-loved watercolour illustrations, this 16-piece collection brings the beloved characters to life through hand-painted enamel keepsakes, including brooches, necklaces, huggie earrings, and bracelet charms. Each piece captures the character of Peter Rabbit, Flopsy, Cotton-tail, Benjamin Bunny, Jemima Puddleduck, and Tom Kitten in intricate detail.

The Tale of Peter Rabbit is one of the world’s best-loved children’s books and was created by author and illustrator, Beatrix Potter in 1901. The story has never been out of print since it was first published by Frederick Warne & Co. (today an imprint of Penguin Random House) and has sold in excess of 46 million copies worldwide. Today over 2 million of her ‘little books’ are sold globally every year, whilst Peter Rabbit has appeared on books and merchandise in more than 110 countries throughout the world.

Fable England’s Creative Director, Vanessa Radley says of the collaboration, “The many delightful stories of Peter Rabbit and friends, created by the much loved and celebrated British author and artist, Beatrix Potter, are timeless classics with nostalgic appeal. As such, we couldn’t resist this special opportunity to collaborate on a collection of individual hand-painted charms, precisely following Potter’s watercolour illustrations, first published in 1901.”

She adds, “The legendary Tale of Peter Rabbit and friends have amused and delighted families all over the world for well over a century and continue to do so today. We selected popular characters that resonated with our childhood, whilst also considering the cute factor, which is essential for any Fable England charm.”

Peter Rabbit Necklace - £34

Katy Coates-Beale, Licensing Executive at Penguin Ventures comments, “It has been a pleasure working in collaboration with the team at Fable England to bring this collection to life. We have long admired the Fable England brand and products, and they make a perfect fit for THE WORLD OF PETER RABBIT™ , with both brands finding their heart in storytelling and a reverence for the British countryside.”

Katy adds, “When discussing the designs for the range with Fable England, we were all drawn to our childhoods with a real sense of nostalgia. Many of us received the books from our grandparents and this feels like such a special collection that touches on that relationship and thoughtful gifting. I love the idea of fans gifting these pieces to their grandchildren or godchildren and continuing that relationship with these wonderful stories.”

When asked about the collection, Vanessa says, “It’s genuinely tricky to choose a favourite, they’re all adorable; each piece is a miniature work of art. However, my first pick must be the Peter Rabbit & Lemon Necklace, especially as fruit motifs are trending this Spring – a double winner!”

Katy adds “The exquisite pieces in this range, each hand-painted in miniature with Fable England’s signature technique, capture so faithfully the essence of Beatrix Potter’s beloved watercolours. This collection is a true celebration of the timeless beauty and charm of the world that Beatrix Potter created.

The collection has been produced under licence from Penguin Ventures on behalf of Frederick Warne & Co. (owner of THE WORLD OF PETER RABBIT™ and today an imprint of Penguin Random House Children’s).

Launched this spring, the collection is priced from £25 to £34 and will be available online at fableengland.com and within The World of Beatrix Potter, Windermere.

TIMELESS DESIGN

Feeling stressed, overwhelmed, and in need of calm? You’re not alone. Stress takes a toll on both skin and mind, leading to inflammation, irritation, and exhaustion. Becky Pope, an expert Clinical Aromatherapist and the founder of B Calm, knows this firsthand.

Founded in London in 2020, E’LHAA is a contemporary fine jewellery brand built on the belief that luxury should be beautiful, meaningful, and kind.

The launch collection features timeless pieces crafted with labgrown diamonds, offering the same brilliance and quality as mined stones, but without the environmental or ethical cost.

Each design is thoughtfully made using 18k recycled gold or metal of your choice and SCS-certified diamonds, created in a climate-neutral lab.

With prices starting from £795, E’LHAA brings a new level of accessibility to high-end jewellery, making it possible to wear something truly special every day.

The brand’s founder, Shahina Kasak, was inspired by a personal mission to offer jewellery that aligns with modern values. “I wanted to create pieces that feel luxurious, but also reflect a conscious way of living,” she shares.

“We believe jewellery should reflect not only your taste, but also your values. That’s why we’ve chosen lab-grown diamonds to offer luxury with a clear conscience.

“E’LHAA is about redefining what luxury means today.”

ELHAA launched in February of this year and invites customers to explore a collection that’s refined, wearable, and rooted in responsibility.

IT’S A DOG’S LIFE

It’sbeenabittersweetmonthforchampion fund-raiser Nicola Steele, as she continues her year-longmissiontoraisefundsforHopeRescue

The good news is that the Bridgend Boutique owner has already surpassed the 50 per cent mark of her £20k target, raising around £3k with online donations and a little over £7k with her monthly events.

With eight months left until the end of 2025, Nicola is well on her way to smashing her original target that she set herself at the end of last year, which was to raise £20k to coincide with Hope Rescue’s 20th anniversary.

Over the course of the past few month’s, Nicola has held a variety of fund-raising events for her worthy cause, including a multitude of extravagant fashion shows, each with their own special theme, as well as taking on more daring activities, such as exposing her body to both extreme hot and cold temperatures, and taking part in daredevil theatrics such as traversing the UK’s largest zip-line - eek!

Not only have these fundraising events brought hope to the dogs, but they have brought immense joy to the people who have attended them, with plenty of prizes handed out, especially gift cards to be used within Nicola’s incredibly popular Bridgend Boutique.

Nicola is no stranger when it comes to raising money for charity, but as a dog lover, she’s extremely passionate about helping the animals that are in the care of Hope Rescue. So much so, she’s dedicating the month of May to her beloved Border Terrier, Sochia Sofia Steele, who sadly passed away last month due to illness.

Nicola reflects on Sochia’s life: “From the very beginning, placing my order with a professional dog breeder, to having first choice of picking her from the litter, I knew that we were destined to be together.”

“The breeder said to me that I could have the pick of the bunch, and when I singled her out, she advised not to take her home as she was the runt of the litter.

“She was always very tiny, and had the appearance of looking like a puppy for many years - she had the wrong shaped head for a Border Terrier, and her front teeth never grew. This didn’t matter to me, as in my eyes Sochia was perfect.

“Sochia had typical small dog’s syndrome and disliked other dogs, she had to be queen bee where ever she went and would let others know it with her signature yappy little bark. Nobody messed with Sochia!

“Although she wasn’t a fan of other dogs, she absolutely adored people and loved nothing better than jumping up to grab your attention or cosying up by sitting on your lap.

“Throughout her life, she won numerous local dog shows, winning Best Border Terrier for being so cute (beating her sister Matilda, who was a little overweight at the time), and was always pampered for being a pretty girl.

“She’s stayed and dined in some of the best dog friendly hotels and restaurants in the country, having her very own sausages cooked for her by the hotel’s chefs. Her love of food has led her to earn extra treats for her impeccable behaviour. Every Friday we would have a fish and chips supper, where the staff in our local chippy would wrap a sausage each for Sochia and Matilda to enjoy.

“Sochia has also ridden on children’s fairground rides, including a ferris wheel, she’s been on many boating trips and sailed on a luxury yacht, where she loved nothing more than sunbathing on the deck.

“One of her most favourite places to visit was Clifton, spending many lazy weekends away self proclaiming to be an honorary Cliftonite. She loved nothing more than to walk over the suspension bridge, as she knew that when crossing it meant a weekend of walks and fuss!

“She really has had an incredible life, but it wasn’t all plain sailing and luxury. When she was a puppy, she had an horrific accident where she got speared and pinned to the floor by a wrought iron rod. She was so brave! Sochia was featured on the vet’s Facebook page due to it being such a bizarre incident.

“In April of 2022, Sochia had sepsis from splinters in her gut, this was caused by eating the garden shed - naughty girl! I was told she only had a 30 per cent chance of getting better, but my little brown dog did it - my Sochia pulled through!

“Then October 2024 she was taken ill again, and was rushed in for an emergency hysterectomy. This was the making of her, as she put on a healthy amount of weight and for the first time in a while, she looked really healthy and well.

“Then around March of this year, I noticed that she wasn’t jumping up on the bed, and was also hesitant to jump up on the sofa. She always pulled on the lead when we went for walks, and stopped doing this too. This was not like my Sochia at all, being her mother for the past 12 years I knew that something wasn’t right.

“Her last trip was to Brixham in Devon, a lovely trip to the seaside - I could see that she was not her usual self so I brought her home early for a visit to the vet. I already knew in my heart that my little brown dog had fought her last fight before hearing the news, unfortunately her gallbladder and liver were riddled with secondary tumours. I took her home and loved her as I’ve always done.

“On her last day, she was like a little puppy again, running and playing, plus rolling in fox poo - her absolute favourite. She noticed that she wasn’t getting told off, so made the most of it and enjoyed a few rolls that day!

“Her last meal was a delicious bacon sandwich, and I dressed the room with posh candles, a velvet pillow, and relaxing music of birds singing. If Sochia could talk, I bet she would’ve said that “this is a little over the top mum.”

“The vet arrived to send her on to the next world. Relaxing on her pillow, with her sister Matilda at her side, she passed peacefully surrounded by everyone who loved her. It was a very difficult decision for me to make, but I wanted her to go before she was in any pain.

“As Sochia was so privileged and realising that so many other dogs do not and will not have the same quality of life that she had, I wanted to leave a legacy in Sochias name. For the month of May, and quite possibly for the rest of the yearly campaign, I’d like all donations be dedicated to all the dogs that never got the love that Sochia did.

“It absolutely breaks my heart, that these animals don’t get the love that they deserve and I’m so grateful and in awe of the work that the team at Hope Rescue does. If I can play a part in making these animals lives better, then I know I’ll be able to sleep a little easier.

“Please help me in making the lives of these dogs a little better, and spare them a little love from the dogs that you love in your lives.

“Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to Hope Rescue, so it’s the most efficient way to give - saving time and cutting costs for the charity.

“JustGiving sends your donation straight to Hope Rescue and automatically reclaims Gift Aid if you are a UK taxpayer, so your donation is worth even more. Simply scan the QR code on this article to donate.

“On behalf of everyone who has helped me to achieve 50 per cent of my yearly goal already, I’d just like to say a huge thank you for your continued support. The care and love is truly overwhelming, and you really don’t know how much it means to me. Thank you all!”

GIVE A DOG A HOME

HopeRescueneedshelpinfindingforeverhomesfortheloveableanimalsintheircare

Hope Rescue is the leading dog welfare charity that saves the lives of strays, abandoned and unwanted dogs in South Wales.

Since 2005, its team has given a second chance to thousands of dogs that need a new start, from its dedicated facilities in Rhondda Cynon Taf.

They commit to taking all the unclaimed stray dogs from six Local Authorities in

Raya and Sierra, a perfect pair of pointers aged 6 and 8, and are a great combination for one another, both enjoy their walks. They are very attached to one another so are looking to be rehomed together.

They walk gently on their leads and after a walk they love to curl up and it can be hard to determine where one dog stops and the other begins as they are so intertwined when curling up together.

They both enjoy the company of their human companions although Sierra can be reserved initially. For this reason they can be rehomed with children aged 14+.

Both girls try to be desperately clean in their kennel so we are sure they will pick up house training quickly. They will need to have the time they are left home alone built up gradually.

South Wales, which includes: Caerphilly, Merthyr Tydfil, Torfaen, Blaenau Gwent, Rhondda Cynon Taf, Bridgend and the western half of the Vale of Glamorgan.

We prepare dogs for their second chance at a happy life, taking time to assess their needs and find the perfect home.

We also provide valuable support to pet owners in crisis who need to rehome their pets.

Ollie, 11, is a Pug cross who is currently being cared for by one of our fantastic foster families.

He is a friendly boy who enjoys meeting new people and could live with older children.

Ollie enjoys going for short strolls and walks well on lead.

Ollie can be unsure when he sees dogs out and about so for now will need to be the only dog in the home.

He is eager to please and will do anything for a tasty treat or two. A real sweetheart who will make a wonderful companion

A real sweetheart who will make a wonderful companion.

Hope Rescue actively campaigns for improvements to animal welfare legislation and enforcement, and provides support and advice to the public on responsible dog ownership.

If you’re looking for a new companion, then look no further than Earl, our handsome 2 year old bull lurcher!

Just like his tea-loving namesake, Earl is a blend of boldness and sweetness. He has a playful, bouncy side and, once he gets to know you, will steep himself in affection.

Earl is still perfecting his manners, especially when getting his harness on (he gets a little too excited to go out), but with gentle reminders of his favourite treat, he’s learning to keep his paws on the ground.

He enjoys a good stroll and will happily brew up some bonding time by leaning in for fuss when you pause to take in the scenery.

If you think Earl is your cup of tea, get in touch and let’s find this lovely boy his forever home!

Hi, I’m Earl!

CAFFEINE & CORE

From Kate Beckinsale to Rita Ora —whyeveryone’swearingSOSALA

The celeb-favourite label, SOSALA by Lauren Pope and Vas Morgan , returns with its third collection, the ultimate throw-on-and-go wardrobe for women fuelled by oat lattes, ambition, and the power of the group chat.

Already loved by style icons like Rita Ora, Chloe Sims, Chelsea Lazkani, Kate Beckinsale, Jodie Turner-Smith, Roxy Horner, Amy Jackson, Bella Thorne and more, this drop blends elevated everyday style with the ease modern women crave.

Consider this your daily caffeine fix: A perfectly brewed collection of everyday essentials in shades as smooth as your go-to coffee order created by best friends Lauren Pope and Vas Morgan.

Caffeine & Core is your daily uniform in five rich, coffee-inspired shades made to mix, match, and move with you. Easy to throw on, hard to take off. Outfits as strong as your morning brew.

Designed for comfort, movement, and style, this collection features sculpting leggings, matching sets, layering pieces, and effortless loungewear made to mix and match. From workouts to coffee runs, these staples bring strong fits and smooth layers to your daily uniform.

Vas Morgan told LifeStyle Wales: “Some may know us from our friendship on screen in ‘The Only Way Is Essex’, what you might not know is that long before we joined forces on camera, we were running around London, hopping on flights to LA and brainstorming ideas from Laurens flat in Chigwell.”

“For years, we talked about building something together, something that reflected the strength of our friendship, the solidarity we had created between us and the realisation that men will come and go but our friendship is forever. After many names, ideas and late-night brainstorms, SOSALA was born.”

Lauren Pope added: “SOSALA isn’t just a brand, it’s the embodiment of the bond of not just ours, but all friendships, a brand that celebrates connection and how we feel in what we wear during those everyday moments - a coffee catch up, that pilates class, the school run, that zoom call, the gym session, running errands, we got you covered.”

“This wasn’t an overnight launch, it has taken time, effort and intention and we are incredibly proud of it.

“From our friendship to yours, we hope you feel the love in every piece!”

Strong, undeniably addictive, and zero effort required.

The new collection is available online at www.sosala.com

A JOURNEY OF HEALING

BCalm, thewellnessbrandfoundedbyClinical AromatherapistBeckyPope, proudlyunveilsits latest innovation – the Personalised Care Set

After struggling with perioral dermatitis and migraine with aura from chronic stress, Becky discovered the profound connection between stress, gut health, and skin conditions. Conventional treatments failed her, leading her to explore nature’s most powerful remedies—essential oils.

Did you know that essential oils can begin relieving stress in just 22 seconds? When inhaled, they send signals directly to the limbic brain—the control centre for emotions—triggering an immediate calming response. Within 2 minutes, they circulate in the bloodstream, and within 20 minutes, they support the entire body’s natural healing processes. This makes them a powerful tool for restoring balance, soothing the nervous system, and supporting skin health from within.

B Calm believes that self-care is more than just skincare; it’s a holistic wellness ritual. Essential oils offer a natural way to manage stress, boost energy, and promote relaxation throughout the day. Whether diffused, applied topically, or added to a bath, these blends provide emotional balance, skin nourishment, and a sense of well-being.

Choose the Right One for Your Skin

✔ Sweet Almond Oil – Suitable for all skin types, especially sensitive or dry skin. Soothes, hydrates, and helps with dullness. Also beneficial for scars and wrinkles. (Contains nuts.)

✔ Jojoba Oil – Ideal for oily and acne-prone skin. Helps with redness, pigmentation and wrinkles while balancing sebum production.

✔ Grapeseed Oil – Lightweight and suitable for all skin types, including sensitive and allergy-prone skin. Helps with hydration and combination skin concerns.

✔ Castor Oil – Thick and restorative, excellent for hydration, promoting growth, and reducing puffiness and dark circles.

Every B Calm product is crafted with pure, organic, and vegan ingredients, free from synthetic fragrances or harmful chemicals. Sustainability is at the heart of the brand, ensuring that self-care is as kind to the planet as it is to the skin.

The Personalised Body + Face Care Set is available this May 2025 from www.bcalm.co.uk

WHEN SLEEP WON’T COME

Dear Ros, not being able to sleep is pushing me to breaking point. I haven’t slept at all for two nights because my mind keeps whirring. I’ve tried exercise, sleeping pills, and drinking alcohol, but nothing seems to work - I can’t shut my mind off and find myself still awake into the early hours.

Let’s get real — lying awake at 3am, desperate for sleep, feeling like your head’s a hamster wheel that won’t stop spinning? It’s brutal. I hear this all the time: “I’m doing everything ‘right’ — working out, popping the pills, even tried a glass (or three) of wine, but I still can’t sleep.”

Here’s the truth bomb: good sleep isn’t something you can force — it’s something you invite. And that starts with understanding what your mind needs to feel safe enough to switch off. And guess what? Our sleep isn’t just powering down, it’s a hormone balance. Yes, that’s right good old hormones.

In WHiL , sleep is one of our core principles for a reason. It’s not just about clocking hours — it’s about restorative sleep. That deep, healing phase where your brain clears out waste, your body repairs cells, and hormones reset. It’s the time when stress is processed, and resilience is rebuilt. Remember, this is when your immune system is powered up. A good immune system is synonymous with a healthier life.

Here is a nugget you should know; that the golden window for the most restorative sleep is roughly between 10pm and 2am. That’s when your body gets the best quality deep sleep, especially if your natural rhythm is aligned with it. Miss it more than twice and even 8 hours won’t feel refreshing.

But for many women, (and men) there’s another layer: hormones. Oestrogen, progesterone and even cortisol rise and fall throughout the month — and as we move through our 30s, 40s, and beyond, those shifts can seriously mess with sleep. One week you’re out like a light, the next you’re wide-eyed at midnight. It’s not all in your head — it’s in your hormones.

What’s stopping you? Often, it’s not your body — it’s your nervous system stuck in overdrive, and your hormones are sending mixed signals.

Alcohol might knock you out, but it bulldozes REM sleep — the stage that keeps your emotions and memory in check. Sleeping pills sedate, but they don’t offer real rest. Over-exercising or late-night screens? They spike cortisol, your stress hormone, keeping your brain on high alert, because that beautiful hormone melatonin tanks.

Instead, try the WHiL way:

• Get your head out of your head: Write it all down. Do a “brain dump” before bed so your mind doesn’t rehearse it all night.

• Create a wind-down window: At least one hour before bed, go tech-free. Dim the lights, stretch, sip herbal tea, listen to something calming.

• Breathe like it matters: Box breathing (in 4, hold 4, out 4, hold 4). It calms your vagus nerve and signals safety

• Sunlight first thing: 10 mins of morning light resets your body clock. Simple, natural, powerful. It super charges your cortisol – which is very important in the morning and sets the bodies processes in motion

Sleep isn’t a luxury, it’s your foundation. When it goes, everything starts to wobble. But you’re not broken, and your body isn’t the enemy. With the right cues, it will remember how to rest. Prioritise those healing hours between 10pm and 2am. That’s where real restoration happens — not just sleep, but a deep reset. And if your hormones are playing up, you’re not alone - there is support!

If you’re struggling and don’t know where to start, I offer a FREE 15-minute telephone chat through Rosmedics. I’m not just a doctor — I’m a longevity and health specialist. Let’s get to the root of what’s going on and build a sleep plan that works for your life — not just your pillow.

PROVEN RESULTS

Nurtureahealthypregnancyjourney with Probiotics and Multivitamins

Tailored for expectant mothers, this live bacteria blend aids gut balance to support digestion, immunity and nutrient absorption.

With 10 billion CFUs (individual bacteria) per serving, it’s your trusted companion for a strong gut foundation during this special time, helping both you and your baby to thrive.

Healthy gut bacteria balance is vital to supporting your baby both during pregnancy and following birth. Evidence increasingly suggests that the acquisition of beneficial bacteria, which is required for infant health, is influenced by the mother during pregnancy, birth, and breastfeeding.

Beneficial bacteria strains have been detected in both the foetus and the placenta during pregnancy and our baby’s first colonisation of bacteria occurs immediately at birth either from the mother if born vaginally or from the environment if born by caesarean section. In addition, mum’s gut bacteria are known to relocate to her breast tissue before birth in preparation for breastfeeding.

Mum’s health during pregnancy is also a key concern and, as well as the usual food cravings and aversions, tiredness and nausea, this can be a time when women can experience unusual symptoms, such as food intolerances, IBS-type symptoms, including nausea, bloating and gas, and allergies, such as hay fever and eczema.

Multi-strain good bacteria for pregnancy and breastfeeding:

ProVen Biotics For Pregnancy can help to support bacterial balance in the mother’s gastrointestinal tract during pregnancy and breastfeeding and has been shown to be completely safe both during pregnancy and for newborn babies.

Each capsule contains 10 billion of the Lab4B group of friendly bacteria along with vitamin C and calcium to provide further support for immunity and digestion – designed to support both mum and baby during this key time of life.

Visit p rovenbiotics.uk to find out more - there’s an expert on hand to answer your questions and to help find the right product for you.

For Pregnancy PLUS

If you are looking for a complete pregnancy support multi-nutrient supplement with friendly bacteria, try our ProVen Biotics Pregnancy Plus, which contains vitamins, minerals and Omega 3 fish oil along with 10 billion probiotics.

With 10 billion CFUs and key nutrients for you and your baby, it’s your daily partner in nurturing a healthy pregnancy journey and the well-being of both of you.

WHiL POWER

Strugglingtokeeptheweightoff?

Dr RosJabar has the answer

Dear Ros, I’m a woman in my 30s and have been using weight loss injections for a few months with great results — I feel better, more confident, and healthier. But now I’m unsure how to stop them without piling the weight back on. How do I come off them safely and keep the weight off long term?”

Firstly, well done! You’ve done something powerful: taken control of your health, and that’s no small thing. I get asked this a lot — “ I’ve had great results on weight loss injections but now what?”

Here’s the truth: the injections were a tool, not the solution. They gave your body a nudge and removed the noise of food and habits around food. but now it’s time to shift from “losing” to sustaining. That’s where my WHiL programme (Wellness & Health in Life) steps in — it’s built exactly for this.

We focus on real-life, realistic habits that keep weight off and energy high without relying on medication forever. You need to support your body with food, movement, mindset and — yes metabolic repair.

Coming off injections too fast, without support, can trigger rebound weight gain. But with the right prep, it doesn’t have to.

Here’s where to start:

• Rebuild routine: Don’t ditch structure. Keep your eating times regular and blood sugar steady, rebound sugar craving is a thing! Be sure to remember protein and fibre with every meal.

• Move smart, not more: Strength training is your best friend for long-term fat burn and hormone balance.

• Sleep and stress: These are massive players in weight. Poor sleep or unregulated cortisol will undo the best diet.

• Mindset reset: Let go of the “on or off” switch. This is about integration, not perfection.

And the best part? You don’t have to figure it all out alone. I offer a FREE 15-minute telephone chat through Rosmedics — it’s a judgement-free zone where we can talk through your next steps.

I’m a health optimising and longevity specialist, and this is what I love — helping men and women thrive beyond the scales.

You’ve done the hard part. Let’s make it stick — with kindness, science, and a plan that fits your life.

LEGACY & CONSEQUENCES

Extradatesaddedtosoldoutperformancesof TheWomenofLlanrumneyby Azuka Oforka

Sherman Theatre has confirmed a week of extra performances of The Women of Llanrumney - Azuka Oforka’s devastating historical drama set in the Llanrumney sugar plantation in 18th century Jamaica - at the theatre in May 2025.

The original Sherman Theatre production was performed to sellout audiences at the theatre in Cardiff May-June 2024, and drew rave reviews (★★★★★ “marks Oforka as an urgent and important voice in Welsh theatre” The Guardian).

This year’s co-production with Stratford East in London, where the play has just completed a hugely successful and acclaimed run, is no exception (★★★★ The Daily Telegraph, The Stage, The Standard, The Financial Times).

The Women of Llanrumney returns to the Sherman Theatre Studio in Cardiff on 26 April, but since all of those performances have sold out, the run has now been extended beyond 10 May to 17 May. Tickets for the extra performances are on sale now.

The Llanrumney plantation was founded by enslaver Sir Henry Morgan, who was originally from Llanrumney in Cardiff - hence its name - in the late 1600s. Seeing a portrait of him in Cardiff inspired Azuka to explore the consequences and legacy of Morgan’s role as an enslaver. The Women of Llanrumney sheds light on this hidden chapter of Welsh history and explores the experience of women during slavery; those who benefited from it, those who were brutalised by it and those who fought to destroy it.

1765. Cerys and her mother Annie are enslaved by the wealthy Morgan family from Wales. Their future hangs in the balance when Elizabeth Morgan is faced with losing her plantation. Fearing what could lie ahead, Annie does everything she can to secure her position in the Great House. But sooner or later, with a storm of rebellion building, Annie will have to face up to the horror and trauma all around her, including her own.

Returning to their roles in the 2025 co-production are Sherman Theatre Associate Artist Suzanne Packer as the slave Annie, Nia Roberts as Elizabeth Morgan, a fictional descendant of Henry Morgan, and Matthew Gravelle as Simon Taylor and other roles. Shvorne Marks joins the cast, playing Annie’s daughter Cerys.

The original creative team returns; Sherman Theatre Associate Artist Patricia Logue as Director, Set & Costume Designer Stella-Jane Odoemelam, Lighting Designer Andy Pike, Composer Takisha Sargent and Sound Designer Ian Barnard.

Don’t miss your chance to see this incredible performance at the Sherman Theatre this spring. Visit www.shermantheatre.co.uk for more info and to purchase tickets.

A SLICE OF HEAVEN

Enjoybreathtakingviews withdeliciousrusticpizza

Since 2016, the pizza van’s scenic location on the Llangynidr moors has seen hundreds of thousands of visitors from all over the country to this idyllic spot.

This is due to the breath-taking panoramic views of the Black Mountains and Langorse Lake within the luscious valleys below, and when combined with the taste of delicious handmade pizzas, it makes for the perfect pitstop when traveling throughout the beautiful Welsh countryside.

Pizzas are individually hand-stretched to 10 to 12 inches before being baked in Peter’s purpose-built, Amodo oven by AmoBox at 400 degrees, giving them a delicious crispy crust.

Firing the oven up for the first shift on a Friday can take up to two hours to get it to the correct temperature. When the oven is at the desired heat, the LDPV team can get a Margherita prepared and cooked within two minutes.

Watching them work is like staring at a well-oiled machine along a car assembly line, one rolls the dough and adds the sauce, another adds the toppings and then finally cooked in the pizza oven.

Menu options include, the classic Margherita, pepperoni, Hawaiian, Goat’s cheese, BBQ chicken, ham and mushroom, Vegetarian, and finally, the incredibly popular Big Dragon Meat Feast. Side toppings are also available, plus a selection of cold drinks to wash your pizzas down with.
