Heavy harvest

The thud of 16 heavy hoofs over dry Devon farmland, the clank and creak of vintage machinery. Summer rolls into autumn, and Jonathan Waterer is captured here with a team of four of his Shire horses, combining organic and ancient varieties of wheat. He farms regeneratively at Higher Biddacott Farm, Chittlehampton to increase biodiversity and enrich the soil. The wheat is then stoneground into wholemeal flour and marketed as ‘Flour by Horsepower’. Regular contributor, South Molton artist and photographer Karolina Andreasova, captured this timeless rural scene for our photo of the month. “It’s a privilege for me to stand alongside these stunning Shires and document this aspect of farming life. It makes one truly grateful for the beautiful Devon countryside we live in,” said Karolina.
