Welcome to the March edition of Molton Monthly Magazine. We start by saying massive congratulations to everyone involved with South Molton Pannier Market, as it scooped a third national award in three years!
It is such a great asset to the local area, not just its twice weekly markets, but all the other special events that take place there throughout the year. The latest accolade is testament to the organising team, all of the traders and everyone who supports it.
The news was somewhat tainted by the sudden resignation of market events manager Melanie James and supervisor William Tyacke, which they announced on Facebook on February 5th. South Molton Town Council says the Pannier Market will continue to run as normal.
Griffiths have yet to respond to my latest request for information about what work is left to do on the Link Road this year, hopefully I will have an update for you soon.
As usual, there’s a packed what’s on section, a glorious photo of the month, gardening tips and lots more... as we head into spring!

by Paul Wells
The title of this month’s spectacular photo of the month comes from the words of a poem left as a comment when the image was shared on an Exmoor social media page.
Paul Wells says he has enjoyed photography for 50 years, but this picture was taken on his iPhone rather than his regular camera.
“It was a wonderful, clear and sunny day but with lots of low fog and mist patches. As my wife and I, and not forgetting our three dogs, were walking back to our car the sun just seemed to burst through, and the cloud and fog was just moving about wonderfully... and then the sun rays appeared,” said Paul.
“I sometimes look back and think how blessed I was to be there, right time and right place.” It was taken on Exmoor in January close to Dunster and just past Nutcombe Bottom.
When Paul started taking pictures film was the only format and he had his own dark room, but he has now embraced digital photography.

Now in its 46th year, the RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch took place over three days from January 24th - 26th and 7,398 records were sent in by people across Devon - the 9th highest number in the UK. Among them were John and Helen Found from South Molton who got in touch with Molton Monthly Magazine to say they saw 18 different species and 86 birds in total.
People across North Devon, and bird keepers in particular, are being urged to be vigilant after a case of bird flu was recorded among captive birds in the Braunton area.
A 3km controlled zone was established by Defra, following the outbreak of the highly pathogenic H5N1 strain of the disease.
The animal rescue and rehabilitation service, the Littlest Wildlife Hotel at Alswear announced it was suspending taking in birds as a precaution at the end of January. They were also asking any people visiting with injured animals to stay in their cars to adhere to new biosecurity measures.

South Molton based Drama@ will perform at four different venues this March (see advert opposite). They’re taking on three Michael Green plays, from his collection written for ‘coarse actors’. Integral to all of them is the fact that furniture fails to work, props have been mislaid and lines learned but not necessarily in the right order!
Performing with them on March 7th, 14th and 15th are the multi talented Hot House Combo, nothing coarse about them. They are inspired by great musicians of the 1920s, ‘30s and 40’s, an upbeat and exciting four piece band. Performing on March 8th, Bicycle Repair Man, an acoustic duo, playing a quirky folk style of covers with some original and traditional songs thrown into the mix.
The shows start at 7.30pm and there will be a bar in each venue - ticket details on opposite page.
For the third year running South Molton Pannier Market has won a top accolade, this time voted ‘best market attraction’ in Britain.
The prestigious title, previously held by Bolton and Belfast, was announced at the National Association of British Markets Awards at the Burlington Hotel in Birmingham on January 30th.
“We are absolutely thrilled to announce that our marvellous market has just won another national award!” said Melanie James, the market’s events and promotions manager.
The market was described as ‘outstanding’ and the judges unanimously voted that it is ‘Britain’s Best Market Attraction’. South Molton Pannier Market won the title ‘best community market’ at the national awards in both 2023 and 2024, making it a hat-trick of big wins.
Chief Executive of NABMA, David Preston, said at the awards presentation, “This twice-weekly market is the heartbeat of its community, supporting local charities and businesses while creating a vibrant and bustling shopping destination.”
“South Molton’s market is unrivalled in the quality and variety of its produce and businesses within the local area. It is constantly held up as an example of what a successful traditional market should offer.”
South Molton Town Clerk Andrew Coates said, “I am hugely proud that our market has won another award. It really has helped to put our town on the map.”
“This latest national award means the world to the market staff and traders, and it would not have been possible without the amazing support we have from our wonderful customers. Thank you so much!” added Melanie James.

The volunteer-run charity South West Blood Bikes has started working with South Molton Hospital, carrying samples for vital tests to specialist units around Devon.
“Before, the hospital would have to use taxi firms out of hours when the NHS couriers don’t operate. By providing our free service the hospital will save money and be able to use it instead to benefit patients and local residents through provision of other services,” Mark Bentley, Chairman of South West Blood Bikes, told Molton Monthly Magazine.
The first job for South Molton Hospital took place almost immediately after the service launched, with a call coming in at 6.58am on Sunday, February 9th with a request for urgent samples to be transported to Barnstaple for testing.
The scheme is being supported with free storage for one of their specialist motorcycles by Richard Everitt, a passionate biker who runs RE Consultancy & Training at Pathfields Business Park (advert page 44). “They are a lovely bunch of people providing a valuable service to the NHS completely free of charge,” he said.
“It is so rewarding making a small difference to the people of North Devon and surrounding areas - being a part of larger team trying to make people better, combined with an interest and desire to ride motorcycles.”
Launched in 2018, South West Blood Bikes now works with hospitals, GP surgeries and hospices across Devon. The bikers are all volunteers and ride whatever the weather.
Alongside blood samples, they also transport things like donor breast milk as part of a complete out of hours courier service, saving the NHS an estimated £400,000 so far. To find out more or get involved, go to: swbb.charity

The latest re-wilding initiative is to reintroduce the pine marten to Exmoor after an absence of 100 years.
Devon Wildlife Trust have already released 15 on Dartmoor as part of the Two Moors Pine Marten Project, and plans to do the same in Exmoor National Park this year.
“These rare mammals need our help to return to their former homes in the South West, but we also need their help to bring back the natural balance of wildlife to our woodlands,” said Ed Parr Ferris, conservation lead at Devon Wildlife Trust.
Pine martens went extinct in our region more than 100 years ago after centuries of loss of their favoured woodland living places, and as the result of hunting and trapping.
Ali Hawkins is Exmoor National Park Authority’s Senior Ecologist, “We are delighted to see the first release of pine martens back into the South West on Dartmoor. It’s been an amazing partnership effort to get to this point and we are excited that this will pave the way for a release on Exmoor in 2025.”
“We have historical evidence that these amazing animals used to be in our Exmoor woodlands and their presence will help to drive forward nature recovery,” she added.
Pine martens are tree-climbing members of the weasel family - about the size of a small cat, they are shy and mainly nocturnal. Much of the pine marten’s diet is made up of voles, but they will also eat other small animals including mice, squirrels, birds and insects. In autumn they also eat wild fruits.
An evening talk is taking place at Quince Honey Farm from 7pm on Wednesday, March 19th (advert page 13) where Devon Wildlife Trust will outline their plans and provide an opportunity to answer questions about the planned reintroduction of pine martens on Exmoor.

Jacqui Footman, the current Mayor of South Molton, is hosting a night of entertainment to raise money for local good causes.
The main event is a one man comic-tragedy set in Shakespearian times, ‘Death of a Clown’ starring Robert Hillman.
The play takes place at South Molton Assembly Rooms on the evening of Saturday, March 22nd (6.45pm for 7.15pm), and will to raise funds for this year’s Mayor’s Charities: Benita Project, Skate Molton and Children’s Hospice South West. There will also be a prize raffle on the night. Parking and disabled access will be available via the Pannier Market.
Tickets are available now at the Amory Centre, with a minimum donation of £12.
1. Sweet peas can be sown outside this month. If you planted them in the autumn keep them in a sunny position in the greenhouse for a while longer.
2. Plant summer flowering bulbs such as gladioli, lilies and eucomis.
3. If you haven’t pruned your climbing and bush roses yet, this month is your last chance. Cuts should be no more than 5mm above a bud and should slope downwards away from it, so that water does not collect on the bud.
4. Plant onion sets and shallots. They are one of the easiest crops to grow, taking up little space and giving reliable harvests.
5. Allow a few dandelions to grow in your garden, the flowers are loved by bees and butterflies and the seeds are eaten by small birds.
We have had rather a hectic few weeks at the nursery. Thanks to Storm Eowyn removing the cover from our old polytunnel, we’ve finally got round to erecting the new one.
At the time of writing, we were in the middle of assembling the new frame, hopefully by the time you read this it will be finished, re-covered and full of plants!

The South Molton based Ceramics Academy celebrated its 10th anniversary at the end of January, having started back in 2015.
“It has become a wonderfully busy creative hub, with six ceramic classes running each week, Saturday taster workshops, kids’ classes, one off workshops, masterclasses and much more,” said founder Taz Pollard.
Working alongside Taz are tutors Stephanie Buttle, Ruth Thurbon and Jo Blake. Last year the team realised a major ambition creating a sister community interest company Ceramics Academy CIC. This enables them to run subsidised, or free, workshops and courses.
“This is at the heart of what we do and is aimed at charities, community groups and individuals,” said business manager and CIC director Sarah Bunyard. “The aim is to close the social gap, providing opportunities and boosting mental wellbeing in communities.”
To mark their 10th birthday they will be running competitions and doing a 24-hour ‘Pot-A-Thon’ on April 4th and 5th to raise money for both the CIC and the North Devon charity Chemo Hero.

We have been clearing up after the winter storms that sadly felled several trees. At the same time we asked our tree surgeon to check our remaining ash ones. Unfortunately some have succumbed to Hymenoscyphus fraxineus or Ash dieback. We planted these in 1988 and they have given us great pleasure over the years.
The largest trees had to be taken down three years ago using a cherry picker because they were too dangerous to climb. This year our arborist was confident on his own. He is known affectionately as ‘Monkey Dave’, not just for his agility but because of how he grips the tree with his bare knees!
It is sad to see such a versatile species fall victim to this terrible disease, first recognised in this country in 2012, having moved west across Europe from Poland in 1992. The chronic fungal disease is characterised by leaf loss and crown dieback. Up to 85% mortality rate gives a small hope that 15-20% will survive.
The positive news is that those we felled three years ago are sprouting new growth already. Fingers crossed. ‘Til next time, Roger #TuppertheTractor (tupperthetractor.com and quoitatcrossvineyard.com)
They are volunteers trained by the ambulance service to provide emergency medical care in South Molton and surrounding towns and villages, and are often first on the scene.
Now, Community First Responders are asking for your help to raise £20,000 to buy two additional kit bags (pictured right), and up to 7 defibrillators to be installed locally.
“Our team is a group of individuals that volunteer and dedicate their time to provide a vital link in our community in getting a first response when 999 is dialled,” said a spokesman.
“The kit bags contain equipment that can help us save more lives in local communities.”

We’ve had some very sunny Thursday afternoons this month, although it has still felt cold at the community garden in South Molton. The strong winds blew some of the covers off the plots, so we’ve been tucking everything up again to keep the ground warm and stop the weeds.
Some of our boundary fencing has been repaired and we have a beautiful new gate. We’ll soon be finalising the planting plan for this year and preparing to get growing!
Our AGM is usually held in January but it will be later than usual this year, around April time. This meeting is open to anyone who is interested in our community garden. Please keep an eye on our Facebook page for information about the AGM and feel free to come along if you would like to find out more.
New members are welcome! If you’d like to join us, visit the garden on a Thursday afternoon, around 2-3pm (weather permitting). Alternatively, please see our website for more information: southmoltoncommunitygarden.co.uk or Facebook @southmoltoncommunitygarden
The Princess Royal has been announced as president of the Devon County Show.
The Devon County Agricultural Association said Princess Anne had accepted the role after a longstanding commitment to food, farming and the countryside.
The agricultural show showcases farming and country life and is on from May 15th to 17th at the Westpoint Arena near Exeter.
Princess Anne (photo right), who runs her own farm and estate in Gloucestershire, succeeds Michelin star chef Michael Caines who held the role in 2024.
Deputy show president Roger Ellis said, “I will greatly enjoy supporting The Princess Royal during her year as our President, particularly given our mutual passion for horses and rural life.”
“2025 also happens to be the year that my wife Mary and I celebrate our diamond wedding anniversary - 60 years of marriage, which is a big milestone. It’s going to be quite a year all around.”
Called the Big Brush Club, Devon is the first area in the south west to expand supervised toothbrushing to all primary schools.
Jonathan Bouwer-Davies, Clinical Dental Adviser for NHS Devon said, “A quarter of five-year-olds have tooth decay which can, in severe cases, lead to children needing hospital treatment.”
“Understanding how to brush your teeth properly is an important life skill for children. It takes schools five minutes a day and the benefits can be life-long.”
Under the scheme, teachers will hold daily toothbrushing sessions for 3 to 5 year-olds alongside lessons about self-care, healthy eating and reducing sugar.
The North Devon Dental Steering Group has been set up by Ian Roome MP to tackle the dental crisis facing the area.
He says the main focus is to improve NHS dentistry access and reduce oral health inequalities across North Devon. A petition calling for urgent reform has now been handed in at Downing Street.
He weighed just 800g when he was found abandoned and alone in a frozen puddle by a farmer - but thanks to the hard work of the Kings Nympton based UK Wild Otter Trust ‘Frosty’ is now on the road to recovery.
Founder Dave Webb said it was a miracle the tiny cub survived, “Given that Frosty was found quite literally frozen into a puddle, we all thought the chances he’d survive were really low, but he’s a fighter, and he’s doing really well now.”
Thanks to their expert care, Frosty (above right) has now doubled his body weight and is ready to be paired with another rescued cub to give him the best chance of survival when he’s finally released in about a year.
The UK Wild Otter Trust has a network of volunteers all over the country who assist in transporting needy cubs to its specialist facility in North Devon - Frosty for example was rescued in Lincolnshire.
The charity is currently fundraising to build a second, larger otter rehab facility locally which will feature a rewilding project to create a new meadow and woodland.

Angry residents are calling for drinkers to stop dumping empty cider bottles in the countryside near South Molton.
A recent litter-pick in North Aller Lane near the business park netted 50 or so Thatcher’s Katy cider bottles - empty and tossed in the hedgerows. The volunteers say it’s not the first time, “If you know anyone who may be responsible, please ask them to keep our countryside tidy and safe, take their litter home - and don’t drink and drive.”
Often referred to as ‘the cruelest game’ (because it involves skill and luck), the age old game of backgammon is enjoying a resurgence - and now you can play here in North Devon.
Alongside Devonshire clubs in Exeter, Plymouth, Totnes, Tavistock and Dartmouth there is now a new club here in South Molton. Organised by Jules Smith, (who also runs the local u3a backgammon group), the club is open to anyone who wishes to play the game, whether they are total beginners or experienced players.
Jules has been playing backgammon since the 1980s. He says he is forever passionate about the game, describing himself as “just an intermediate” player who enjoys both teaching and playing live and online backgammon.
Club nights are every other Thursday evening at The Coaching Inn from 7pm (see what’s on page 11). For more information please contact Jules: joolzgammon@gmail.com
Chulmleigh Old Fair has been running for almost 800 years, and they are looking for volunteers to join their organising committee for the 2025 event or to help out during the week-long programme at the end of July.
