A king among birds

A male goldcrest singing his heart out in the spring sunshine is our photo of the month, from the lens of Nick Withers in Chulmleigh. Often described as ‘a king among birds’ because of its golden crown.

“It just so happens that now and again the wildlife shows up when you least expect it,” said Nick. “I had just finished clearing some fallen tree limbs when I heard a goldcrest singing high up in the trees. As usual I made a lunge for my camera and was greeted by this little one who dropped from the canopy and landed in front of me”.

“He started to sing and raised his crest, something I have always wanted to see!”

Goldcrests are Britain’s smallest native bird weighing in at just 5.5 grams, equivalent to a 20p coin. It is pretty much actual size on the page at just 9cm.

Nick is a wildlife photographer and nature guide. You can contact him by email at nickwithers2012@gmail.com or through his website: naturewithnick.com

Whether it’s wildlife like this, nature, a landscape or seascape, rural life, special events, sports, a local character or something else - please keep emailing us your pictures. Youngsters set good example with volunteer litter-pick

When schoolboys Harvey (aged 12) and Henry (aged 7) visited their nan, Jacky, in South Molton recently they were asked what they would like to do... “pick up rubbish” was their surprising reply!

They headed to the town’s ‘REC’ and Community Woodland and soon filled a sack with people’s discarded litter.

“Harvey told me that it takes over 1,000 years for plastic to decompose & he was concerned that animals might get trapped by the litter lying around,” said a proud Jacky.

“Henry has been learning about the environment at school and he was worried that children, animals and birds could be

injured by the discarded glass. He said he felt very good by picking up the rubbish,” she added.

The question both schoolboys asked was, “Why don’t people take their rubbish home?”

Exmoor wildfires - detectives suspect arson

The flames could be seen lighting the night sky for miles around (photos opposite). Fire crews from South Molton, Dulverton, Bampton and Barnstaple battled a 300 metre fire front on West Anstey Common for more than two hours in the darkness - it was to be the first of three fires in two days that detectives now believe were started deliberately.

It had been the warmest day of the year so far, when Devon & Somerset Fire and Rescue Service received a 999 call at 8.04pm on Sunday, March 9th alerting them to a blaze engulfing high gorse and heathland. Crews used a four wheel drive vehicle, a water bowser, hoses and beaters to bring the flames under control.

A second wildfire broke out in the same area around 12.30pm the next day (photo right)

People were warned to stay away as six crews worked for four hours to extinguish the flames, which damaged around 80 acres of moorland.

Firefighters used a drone to monitor the blaze and plan their work.

They were called back to West Anstey Common again at 6.30pm to tackle a third fire, prompting police to launch an investigation into suspected arson attacks.

Sergeant Robert Brown, Neighbourhood Team Leader for South Molton, said, “We are appealing to anyone who has any information or any CCTV or dashcam footage from the area around those times that may assist the investigation.”

Police stepped up patrols on Exmoor as their enquiries continued, but a fourth wildfire happened a week later on Sunday, March 16th at 12pm with crews taking five hours to bring the flames under control. “On arrival we found two fire fronts of 200 metres each being driven by strong winds,” said a spokesman for the South Molton team.

If anyone has any information, they can approach officers or alternatively contact police via their website, or call 101 quoting log number 697 of 10/03/25.

Police investigate ‘crime spree’

Detectives in two counties are appealing for witnesses after five shops were targeted by burglars in the dead of night, leaving a trail of damage to premises and stealing mostly cigarettes and alcohol.

It appears the same three individuals may have struck at Great Torrington, Umberleigh, South Molton and Dulverton between Saturday, February 22nd and Sunday, February 23rd 2025.

Police are appealing for nearby businesses and residents to check their doorbell and CCTV footage after reports of burglaries or attempted break-ins at commercial premises in North Devon and North Somerset.

Local MP, Liberal Democrat Ian Roome, took the unusual step of writing to constituents

asking them if they could help detectives track down the thieves.

Offenders smashed a window with a large rock around 1.45am on Sunday, February 23rd to break into the SPAR shop in The Square, South Molton (above). A police spokesman said, “They carried out an untidy search of the premises, specifically targeting alcohol and tobacco and items were taken.”

“Three male suspects then fled the scene, running down the alleyway towards the Pannier Market. All three were wearing black clothing and one was carrying a floral patterned bag.”

The night before, officers were called just after 12.50am following an attempted burglary at Fishleigh Rock Service Station in Umberleigh (right). Three men forced the shutter door but were unable to gain access to the premises. The suspects were all wearing face coverings and tops with the hoods up, one was wearing white trainers.

Police say there were similar raids at the M&S Simply Food store at Barley Grove Service Station and the nearby Morrisons Daily in New Road, Great Torrington between 12.20am and 2.20am on Saturday, February 22nd. The Co-op in Fore Street, Dulverton

Photo courtesy Fishleigh Rock Service Station was also hit just before 1am on Sunday, February 23rd but the thieves left emptyhanded after causing significant damage to the shop (Avon & Somerset Police crime reference 5225047491).

Anyone who can assist Devon & Cornwall Police with their investigation is asked to report information online or by telephone on 101, quoting crime reference 50250045896.

Link Road speed cameras ‘set alight’ in apparent attack

Average speed cameras have only just started being used on the recently re-opened North Devon Link Road, but two have already been damaged - possibly in protest by a disgruntled driver (right and opposite)

Devon & Cornwall Police are appealing for witnesses and information following a suspected arson on the A361, in a statement they said, “It is believed that two average speed cameras on the A361 between Landkey and South Molton may have been deliberately set alight between 8.45pm and 10pm on Thursday, February 6th.”

Officers investigating the incident are keen to speak to anybody who noticed any suspicious activity, or who has dashcam footage from that evening.

All photos courtesy North Devon News (Facebook)

Charred wood, presumably used as kindling to start a fire, can be seen in one of the two average speed camera control boxes damaged on the A361, between South Molton and Landkey. Anybody with information is asked to contact the police through their website or call 101 quoting crime reference 50250032295.

Latest work on the A361

Contractors Griffiths say that snagging and landscaping work is continuing along the North Devon Link Road for “a few months”, with traffic lights in place mainly at night.

Work has now begun on the Bishops Tawton roundabout, which is expected to continue through to July this year. Drivers are warned of possible queues. It is part of the delayed £67 million North Devon Link Road scheme.

Your jobs to do in April

1. Towards the end of the month, you can start planting up hanging baskets for the summer. Always incorporate slow-release fertiliser and water holding gel. Keep them in the greenhouse for a few weeks.

2. Plant herbaceous perennials into well-prepared soil, we always add well-rotted manure to the soil to get them off to a flying start.

3. Deadhead daffodil and tulip flowers, remove the faded flowers and seed pod at the same time.

4. Tie in climbing and rambling roses as near to horizontal as possible, this will encourage more flowers to be produced.

5. Divide and replant waterlilies once they show signs of growth.

This month we start making hanging baskets. If you would like to have yours refilled or want to order new ones, please call in to the nursery or give us a call. We will keep them at the nursery until they are ready to be hung outside, usually around the third week of May.

Please note, we will be closed on Easter Sunday.

Planning underway for 2025 South Molton Carnival

After its successful return last year (photo right), the theme for the volunteer-run South Molton Carnival 2025 will be ‘up to you’!

“This gives everyone the opportunity to turn their own ideas into reality. We can’t wait to see what you all come up with!” said Claire Bracher from the organising committee.

It will be held on Saturday, September 27th, with the procession starting at 6pm and the Pannier Market will feature children’s rides, stalls and food vendors from around 4pm.

Fundraising events will be held in the coming months in the hope of making the carnival even bigger and better than before. Entry details will be available soon.

If you would like to help, either on the organising committee or as a marshall on the day, or would like to become a carnival sponsor, please email Claire: info@bar27.co.uk

Farm Life - spring forward into summer

I get excited this month because of what lies ahead. Spring is in the air and with it the hope of an exciting summer. Winter storms become a distant memory as the soil warms up and grass starts to accelerate its growth.

Lambs skip across the fields playing hide and seek with their friends. Cattle are released from their winter housing to gorge themselves on the succulent pastures. Spring sown crops emerge to bask in the warming sun.

There is also Easter to look forward to with all those yummy chocolate eggs! On a serious note though, I must spare a thought for egg farmers who have been affected by bird flu. To lose all their laying hens must be devastating.

Here on our small family farm we have our first vineyard tours of the season. Although just the buds are forming with no grapes as yet, the history plus a full explanation of the growing, maintenance and harvest seems to captivate the audience. It also could be due to the tastings at the end! April sees us welcome our first guests into the self catering barn. They too seem to enjoy our beautiful Mid Devon countryside springing to life.

‘Til next time, Roger #TuppertheTractor (tupperthetractor.com and quoitatcrossvineyard.com)

Fatstock Show donates thousands to Blood Bikes

The South Molton Fatstock Show, held in the town’s Pannier Market at the beginning of December each year, has donated £4,821 raised at their 2024 event to the South West Blood Bikes service.

A cheque was presented at The Castle Inn, George Nympton at the end of February, which is in addition to £842 collected in buckets at the show.

“We would like to say a massive thank you to everyone involved with the show, and for the raising of such an amazing amount of money for our charity. We cannot thank you enough for your support,” said a spokesman for South West Blood Bikes, a volunteer run charity providing a life-saving out of hours

“A total of £5,663.48 will go towards supporting the amazing work South West Blood Bikes do across our local area,” said the show team.

“A huge thank you once again to everyone who supports the South Molton Fatstock Show! Your generosity makes a real difference in our community.”

Community Garden News

We’ve been looking out for frogspawn in the South Molton Community Garden pond lately and were disappointed to find none at all. However, we later spotted a huge mass of frogspawn in a puddle on the plastic sheeting we use to cover the beds!

We’ll soon be removing those covers and the puddle would have dried up very quickly, so we decided to move the frogspawn to the pond. With buckets and trugs, we managed to scoop it all up.

South Molton Community Garden AGM will be held at the Methodist Church Hall on Friday, April 4th, at 7pm (all welcome). We will also be holding a stall in South Molton Pannier Market on Thursday, April 24th selling willow plant supports and hazel bean and pea sticks. We can offer a few training days for weaving the uprights if you’d like to make your own - contact Fran on 07833 914913 for details.

If you’d like to join us, visit the garden on a Thursday, 2-3pm (weather permitting). Alternatively, visit our website for more information: southmoltoncommunitygarden.co.uk or Facebook @southmoltoncommunitygarden

Driver arrested over Link Road pile-up

A motorist was arrested on suspicion of drink-driving following a multi-vehicle crash which left the North Devon Link Road closed for several hours.

Police were notified at around 9.30pm on Monday, March 10th to reports of a collision involving two cars and an oil tanker on the A361 at Swimbridge. Two occupants of one of the cars were injured as a result and were taken to hospital.

The driver of the other car, a 37-year-old man from Birmingham, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol. Highways and Fire Services attended the scene and the road was closed while enquiries and vehicle recovery were carried out.

Home seized and put up for sale

As part of North Devon Council’s ‘empty homes project’ an Order for Sale has been obtained at the County Court for an empty property in South Molton to recover council tax arrears.

The council is now in the process of instructing an estate agent to auction the property.

Changes propsed for councils

The government signalled in December its intent to end the current system of district, county and smaller unitary councils. In our area, it is proposed this would be one new authority covering North, Mid and East Devon alongside Torridge district and the City of Exeter. Devon County Council elections are still taking place on May 1st.

New trains for Tarka Line

Great Western Railway (GWR) says it will be adding new Class 175 trains (photo right) to the line between Barnstaple and Exeter to “improve reliability and services.”

“We are very supportive of GWR’s plan to run the newly-acquired class 175 ‘Coradia’ trains on the line in 2025, to help deal with the challenges associated with the current ageing fleet,” said Tim Steer, Railfuture ACE Rail lead & chair of Friends of Barnstaple Railway Station.

“The trains have arrived in Devon and require route testing and driver familiarisation, which should be completed later in the year. We can expect more three-carriage services per hour and with strategic planning, they can be adapted to take up to 5 carriages at peak times.”

North Devon MP Ian Roome added, “This is great news for passengers in North Devon! I have spoken a lot about the need for more reliable and efficient trains in our area with GWR, and these new Class 175 trains are a good step forward for our local rail network. I will continue pushing for better transport investment in North Devon.”

Visa extension for Ukrainians

A new scheme has been launched which will give refugees from the war in Ukraine an extra 18 months on their visas when they expire.

Through the Ukraine Permission Extension Scheme, they can apply to change to a Ukrainian Permission Extension visa (UPE) up to 28 days before their visa ends. Once guests have applied, hosts may submit their application for the payments.

North Devon charity, The Pickwell Foundation works locally to provide assistance to refugees and asylum seekers.

It offers support to Ukrainians and their sponsors in northern Devon through the Homes for Ukraine scheme. More info: thepickwellfoundation.org.uk

Gearing up for rally

South Molton Vintage Rally 2025 is being held at Frankhill Farm, Rackenford on the weekend of May 31st and June 1st.

The organisers are asking anyone with vintage vehicles or machines to get in touch if they would like to display them. Entry forms can be down loaded from their website; southmoltonvintagerallyclub.com or call 01271 378019.

Town band donates to motor neurone charity

South Molton Town Band say they were delighted to hand over a cheque for £735 to the local MND Association (right), which was the result of the collection taken at their Christmas Eve Carols in the Pannier Market. They thanked everyone for their support.

Filleigh Cricket Club appeal

It’s one of the most iconic cricket grounds in North Devon ((right), and now Filleigh Cricket Club has launched a fundraising drive to refurbish its clubhouse and facilities. “We want to be an essential part of the local sport community offering access to cricket for juniors and adults, men and women. We want to be successful in local and Devon leagues, whilst continuing to be a welcoming and family friendly club,” said a spokesman. The appeal is being matched by the Sport England Movement campaign. To donate go to: crowdfunder.co.uk/p/filleigh-cricket-clubhouserefurbishment

Exhibition celebrates the history of Kings Nympton

A photographic exhibition is running at the Museum of Barnstaple and North Devon from March 29th to May 5th, looking at the rich history of Kings Nympton.

There has been an important settlement there since before the Saxons built a church in the 10th century, and many local farms date back to the 14th & 15th centuries. Free admission - details online here: barnstaplemuseum.org.uk/whats-on/
