New website to help support Ukrainian refugees

Devon’s councils are supporting local people who want to provide sanctuary to Ukrainian refugees who have been forced to flee their homes in their war-torn country. Chair of ‘Team Devon’ Councillor Bob Deed said, “The fighting continues to have a devastating impact on civilians, and we have a moral duty to support families fleeing the war in Ukraine.” “There has been a huge groundswell of goodwill with more than 300 Devon residents registering to help, and now we are focused on ensuring that the refugees can join host families as quickly and safely as possible.” A new website now has the latest guidance and information as it becomes available.
Team Devon, which includes Devon County Council, Mid Devon, North Devon, East Devon, South Hams, Teignbridge and Torridge District Councils, West Devon Borough Council and Exeter City Council, condemned Russia’s actions when it first invaded Ukraine. They are giving support to families in Devon whose relatives in Ukraine are fleeing the conflict, as well as to people who volunteer to accommodate refugees. Devon’s district councils are using a common approach to check each sponsor’s accommodation, which will help better assess any potential safeguarding risks. “The safety and wellbeing of those we are welcoming is one of our main priorities,” added Councillor Deed.
