Molton Monthly - June 2022 Welcome to the June edition of Molton Monthly, and as we celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee this month’s magazine is published in the official colours - the platinum represents Her Majesty’s 70 years on the throne, whilst the purple colour is synonymous with royalty. There’s an eight page guide inside to what’s happening in your community over the four day Bank Holiday from Thursday June 2nd to Sunday June 5th (starting on page 11). Plus of course many visitor attractions and pubs have special events. Ring of Bright Water by Barry Edwards
The joy of a young otter being released back into the wild with a splash after being rescued last year, and then rehabilitated by the North Devon based charity the UK Wild Otter Trust. Local photographer Barry Edwards was on hand to witness the special moment ‘Henny’ returned to the river for the first time for our June photo of the month. “What a thrill to see her get into the water and swim around before disappearing off downstream, free again as she should be!” Barry told Molton Monthly. “I managed to click off a few photos in the failing evening light as a record of her. New website to help support Ukrainian refugees

Devon’s councils are supporting local people who want to provide sanctuary to Ukrainian refugees who have been forced to flee their homes in their war-torn country. Chair of ‘Team Devon’ Councillor Bob Deed said, “The fighting continues to have a devastating impact on civilians, and we have a moral duty to support families fleeing the war in Ukraine.” “There has been a huge groundswell of goodwill with more than 300 Devon residents registering to help, and now we are focused on ensuring that the refugees can join host families as quickly and safely as possible.” A new website now has the latest guidance and information as it becomes available.
Team Devon, which includes Devon County Council, Mid Devon, North Devon, East Devon, South Hams, Teignbridge and Torridge District Councils, West Devon Borough Council and Exeter City Council, condemned Russia’s actions when it first invaded Ukraine. They are giving support to families in Devon whose relatives in Ukraine are fleeing the conflict, as well as to people who volunteer to accommodate refugees. Devon’s district councils are using a common approach to check each sponsor’s accommodation, which will help better assess any potential safeguarding risks. “The safety and wellbeing of those we are welcoming is one of our main priorities,” added Councillor Deed. North Devon celebrating Queen Elizabeth for 70 years Pages 20 - 23

When her father King George VI died on February 6th 1952, 25 year old Elizabeth became queen regnant, and her coronation took place on June 2nd 1953 at Westminster Abbey in London. Now aged 96, Elizabeth is the longest-lived and longest-reigning British monarch, the longest-serving female head of state, the oldest living and longest-reigning current monarch, and the oldest and longest-serving incumbent head of state in the world. Her Majesty visited Barnstaple with her husband the Duke of Edinburgh in 1956.

Jobs to do in June 1. Take softwood cuttings of deciduous shrubs such as Spiraea, Buddleia and Caryopteris. 2. Divide bearded irises after flowering, replanting sections with at least two fans of leaves attached. 3. Protect lilies, delphiniums and hostas from slugs and snails. 4. Continue planting out or direct sowing runner and French beans. 5. If long grass in a wildflower meadow is over-vigorous, help reduce its strength by over-sowing with yellow rattle. If you haven’t planted your pots, borders and baskets yet don’t worry you are not too late, we still have a huge selection of plants available. The most popular colour schemes this year have been red, white and blue, or, purple and white as people want to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. There is also still time to plant a tree for the Queen’s Green Canopy, we have plenty of potted trees in stock. Farm Life - royal congratulations by Roger Hill
Seventy years of working life is a long time. Her Majesty the Queen has kept going through thick and thin with retirement not even a consideration. She has much in common with farmers who never stop working completely. Instead we like to stay involved by helping the younger generation. The Queen is a country person at heart, with a passionate love of animals and a deep understanding of nature. She is in tune with the rhythm of the seasons and is always aware of what is happening in the farming world. She has passed on her knowledge to her family just as we do. Prince Charles in particular has taken it one step further with his enthusiasm at Highgrove and throughout the Duchy. Whenever he visits his tenants he is certainly relaxed and very much at home. We owe a huge debt to our longest serving monarch and June sees celebrations across Devon. Villages like ours gather together, which is so important, with music, sports, teas, flower festivals and plenty of chat. I hope we shall make Her Majesty proud. Enjoy the Jubilee. Frame runners! A new activity has been launched in North Devon to help children living with disabilities get on track. Organisers say the first session of the North Devon Frame Running Club was a great success, with more than thirty people attending and children with motor disabilities taking part. “They were enjoying using the five newly purchased specialist ‘Petra RaceRunner’ frames to help them move at speed!” said Gemma Rous. “Children with otherwise impaired mobility were able to experience running independently by their own volition alongside their siblings.” A Race Runner is a specialist 3-wheeled frame, with a saddle and chest support where participants use their feet to propel the frame forwards, experiencing and enjoying the benefits of weight bearing cardiovascular exercise and freedom. Regular sessions are being held at North Devon Athletics Club in Braunton on Thursdays (5-6.30PM). The team behind it said they’d love you to go along and see the frames in action! “There has been a lot of interest in the club and we are really excited about how it may develop,” said Gemma. Cup victory ends strong season for South Molton rugby team

It was the last match of the season, and it proved to be a close fought encounter to the final whistle. South Molton Rugby Club won the Devon Junior Cup on May 1st, narrowly beating Exeter Saracens 12-7 in the final held at Exhibition Fields. Only the week before, South Molton had lost at home at Unicorn Park to the same opponents 31-34, leaving them second in the Tribute Devon One league this season just two points behind the Exeter side. It was a great turnaround for the South Molton team, and a thrilling final to watch for those who made the journey south to support them. Community News pages 50-53 Funding appeal for meadows A campaign has been launched to help raise funds to create new meadows in Exmoor National Park. It follows a 97 per cent drop in wildflower meadows nationwide since the Second World War. “This appeal is about recognising that wildflower meadows are an absolute powerhouse of our countryside,” said Heather Harley, Conservation Officer for Farming and Land Management. “We need more wildflowers growing on road verges, village greens, churchyards and in school grounds. Our work will help bring together those cultivating wildflower seeds and those who have land, with donations

from the public needed to fund vital equipment, habitat surveys and training.”
The pilot stage of the project (pictured above) has seen 30 kilos of seed collected and distributed across five different sites on Exmoor. This has enabled the restoration of more than 11 acres of meadow. It is part of a wider aspiration to create a network of ‘nature corridors and highways’ across the national park, including 1,500 hectares of additional wildflower meadows. Meadows provide important food and homes for a diverse range of species, including many pollinator insects, small mammals, bats and birds, and are a rich carbon store. Donations to the appeal will support the new ‘Exmoor Sowing the Seeds’ project, and you can get involved at the national park centres in Lynmouth, Dunster or Dulverton or online at: exmoor-national-park.gov.uk/caremoor Molton Monthly is a North Devon Biosphere Business Partner helping to promote sustainability.

Chulmleigh’s youth football teams excel
Chulmleigh Youth FC has just wrapped up its most successful season since the football club began in 2003. The boys’ U14 team (pictured above) topped the North Devon Youth League to become champions for the first time in the club’s history, and only narrowly missed out on winning the cup final on penalties. Meanwhile the boys’ U12 team also won the second division of their league, and the girls weren’t to be outdone with the U11 team heading to the cup final on May 22nd.

RGB to support lifeboat charity RGB Building Supplies has selected the Royal National Lifeboat Institution as its charity partner for 2022, and will be organising fundraising events over the next 12 months. Tom O’Leary, manager at RGB South Molton said, “The number of awards that our region’s RNLI lifeboat stations have received is testament to the fantastic work they do to protect local people and visitors.” RNLI inshore lifeboat in action

A quiz night and auction held at West Buckland Village Hall on April 23rd raised £2,874 for the Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal, with further generous donations taking the total to £3,010 - a great achievement for such a small community.
