(Just be sure to come back to the beginning afterwards!) Staying on the topic of Homes, we’ve got three interiors trends to give your home plenty of WOW, personally I love Grey on Grey. But if DIY isn’t your thing, don’t’ worry, check out our Northern Style feature on our favourite Interior Designers, all found right here, in Yorkshire. Plus we’ve got a pretty spectacular Featured Property for you to fall in love with in the shape of Fernleigh Mount, we expect a bidding war... We don’t’ know about you, but here at MODE we’ve all stuck firmly to our Resolutions to get fit & healthy, helped in part by our resident PT, Andrew Landells. For The Home Issue he has devised a super quick and easy

to follow programme of exercises, all of which can be performed in the comfort of your own home, no equipment necessary, so I’m afraid you’ll have to leave those excuses at the door. As for Style, Beauty & Grooming, we continue to deliver on our promise to offer you the best advice, reviews and tips on looking fabulous. (It’s no secret that MODE readers are the best looking.) In the spirit of The Home Issue, we’ve even thrown in a feature on how to get beautiful using homemade potions and lotions, just wait until you learn what you can do with only some coconut oil, cinnamon and oats! We’ve been out on the road again travelling to some of Yorkshire’s finest restaurants and hotels. In this issue you’ll hear our thoughts on No.5 Restaurant in Retford plus an in depth review of the accommodation, dining and spa facilities at the coastal Raithwaite Estate in Whitby! So there we have it, just a few of the highlights in store for you in this very special issue of MODE. We’d love to hear what you’ve enjoyed reading, perhaps you could even tweet us @MODEMagazines, and who knows, you could be featured in the next issue...

Noteworthy Bawtry Fashion Week As the world’s fashion houses and celebrities’ flocked to the major league fashion weeks across the globe, a market town in South Yorkshire was hosting its very own fashion spectacle.

It’s Wine O’Clock in Tickhill Last time we checked, everyone likes cake and coffee and everyone LOVES good wine. So you can imagine how we rejoiced at news of the opening of The Lofthouse Wine & Coffee Bar in Tikchilll. We love its laid back atmosphere and eclectic décor as owner James, continues to fill it with antique gems and Knickknacks he’s scoured from shops across Yorkshire. A coffee and cake lover’s haven by day and a wine aficionado’s paradise by night it’s a welcome addition to the popular town of Tickhill. Follow them on lofthousewinebar

The retail association of Bawtry, an upmarket town near Doncaster, put an amazing week long extravaganza together for the third year running and is proud to claim that it was once again a huge success increasing footfall to the town and social media exposure. “Bawtry Fashion Week is a great concept, firmly putting Bawtry on the fashion map. It brings new people to Bawtry and lets them see what exciting brands our boutiques have in store for them,” said Sarah White owner Bawtry Eye Academy. Rebecca Dickenson, Chair of Bawtry Retail Association, concluded, “Once again we are very proud of the whole team effort to stage such a spectacular fashion week and we thank everyone who took part, helped out and visited including the team at Ziniz Restaurant & Wine Bar for hosting, along with Trax FM, a much needed after show party. The event just keeps getting better each year and after a short break we’ll start planning for 2016 to make sure it’s another week to remember.”

BoConcept on the Move Boconcept are celebrating 10 years of being located in Redbrick Mill, and have just under taken a major move, relocating from their current ground floor space next to Heal’s, a space next to Calligaris near the main entrance. The move has given the store the opportunity to display some new and exciting product ranges and also has given them the chance to incorporate a new sitting workshop area for customers to

relax in as they enjoy an Interior Design consultation. To celebrate the exciting relocation, BoConcept are running some fantastic ‘New Store Opening’ offers, including 20% off selected sofa ranges. Redbrick Mill still continues to attract many new customers every day from all over the North, and has been quoted by The Telegraph as being The Best Interiors Destination Place outside of London.

A CANDLE THAT BURNS BRIGHT WITH THE LIGHT OF LUXURY... Fornasetti Flora Scented Candle £99 selfridges.com A home simply isn’t a home without a touch of Fornasetti, or so we say. Featuring Italian artist Piero Fornasetti’s iconic design of the mythical fertility goddess ‘Flora’, this luxurious scented candle is an essential addition to any artful and stylish home. Fill your home with the beautifully luxurious Flora aroma, an elegant white floral bouquet inspired by the lush flora that fills the gardens that envelop the Fornasetti house in Milan.

A RING WITH HYPNOTIC PROPERTIES... Stephen Webster Crab Crystal Haze Jewels Verne 18-Karat White Gold Multi-Stone Ring £10,050 stephenwebster.com Finished gazing into the blue yet? Stephen Webster’s 18-karat white gold crab ring is inspired by one of his favourite literary works - Jules Verne’s novel Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea. This handmade piece is decorated with a quartz gem, sapphires and blackened diamonds set in rhodium. Keep the opalescent finish in focus with a neutral manicure.

OWNING THE SAME TUMBLER AS RICK DECKARD FROM BLADE RUNNER... Set of Two Blade Runner Whiskey Glasses £94.99 firebox.com An ideal gift for booze-loving Blade Runner fans, this quality piece of retro-modern glassware is more than a prop, it’s a truly iconic drinking vessel with a brilliant backstory. Before you disregard it as a simple prop let us assure you this is no ‘replica’ (no cheap knock-offs here my friend). It has been made by the very same Italian artisan producers of the original. Oh yes.

As is to be expected from a luxury name like Aston Martin, the One-77 Champagne Cooler is crafted to the utmost specification from sterling silver and plated in 24 carat gold. A limited edition of only 77 in the world, the cooler is characteristic of the brand’s faultless craftsmanship and hallmarked with the iconic wing motif. Featuring a carbon fibre inner, the design is beautifully flawless with an elegantly fluted silhouette and unadorned finish. It’s totally worth it... isn’t it? 14

STORING ICE IN THE MOST GLAMOROUS OF WAYS... Silia Tortoiseshell & Ebony Ice Box £1,440 www.silia.eu From this day forward, our ice will only ever be stored in a tortoiseshell box. What on earth were we ever thinking doing otherwise? It’s a fine art to create faux tortoiseshell that is as beautiful as the real deal but this plexiglass and ebony icebox – hand crafted in Italy – retains the exquisite tones of authentic tortoiseshell to a tee. Luxury items are there to make life more beautiful and this piece does exactly that.

A LAP TRAY THAT ACTUALLY LOOKS GOOD...

A BAG THAT IGNITES YOUR INNER CARNIVAL QUEEN...

iWoodesign Pamper Tray Warm Walnut £650

Paula Cademartori Anna Appliquéd Leather Shoulder Bag £985 net-a-porter.com

Usually the idea of a ‘Lap Tray’ would conjure up visions of a terribly unglamorous TV dinner. But behold the brilliantly named ‘Pamper Tray’. The notable Scandinavian aesthetic of the Pamper Tray comes from its clean lines, lack of adornment and simple silhouette. Veneered in a stunning warm walnut, the minimalist piece is offered a sense of the traditional caused by the wood’s naturally striped pattern. Being itself completely stowable – courtesy of its ingenious folding design – the tray features side storage for papers or remote controls and includes removable magnetic brackets for angling a laptop, making it perfect for working from. Although we prefer the idea of breakfast in bed. Hint Hint.

Italian-Brazilian designer Paula Cademartori designs lavish yet functional pieces meant to be cherished. This ‘Anna’ shoulder bag is crafted from pastel-pink leather with appliqués in vibrant shades of plum, periwinkle and papaya. We can’t help but think of bright lights and carnivals when we look at this oh so fun and fabulous bag.

AN EMERGING DESIGNER WITH AN EYE FOR COLOUR AND LUXURY...

HAVING A NOSE IN THE KNOW... Le Nez Du Vin Le Nez Du Whisky by Jean Lenoir £300 lenez.com

Liz Nehdi Meandering Thames Scarf £185 liznehdi.com

Jean Lenoir’s latest creation was developed in collaboration with whisky master Charles MacLean. In this latest addition to the Le Nez collection, Le Nez du Whisky features 54 of the most commonly found aromas in whisky. Awareness of these aromas will help you develop your sense of smell and ultimately help you enjoy whisky (even more). A must-have for whisky lovers, this box set includes a beautifully illustrated book introducing you to the world’s whisky regions, its crafting process as well as an index of over 1200 whiskies classified by aroma.

We’ve fallen head over heels in love with Liz Nehdi’s stunning designs. The Meandering Thames Scarf, a favourite of ours, is a beautiful painterly design in pink, mint and baby blue, balanced by subdued neutrals such as yellow ochre and navy. Based on an original painting by Liz Nehdi inspired by the iconic river of her adopted home of London, this generously sized scarf can be folded and styled in a multitude of ways. The unique design is complemented by luscious silk twill and hand rolled edges. Swoon. 15

MODE REVIEWS THE

The lowdown: HP’s ENVY X2 is a sleek and versatile detachable PC. Delivering the flexibility of an All-in-One desktop, notebook and tablet in one package, it features a fully adjustable stand and wireless keyboard to give you full control over where and how you use it. It’s also powered by 4GB of RAM and Intel’s Core M processor, providing speed and energy efficiency, making it ideal to take on the go. What we thought: There were two standout features of the HP ENVY X2 that I loved. First the detachable keyboard, meaning that the ENVY X2 can function as either a tablet or a laptop which I thought perfectly suited someone on the go. I look for versatility and practicality in a PC. I want it to be great for working on at my desk, easy to pick up and take into a meeting, compact enough to comfortably watch Netflix (which it comes with by the way) on a train ride and suitable for sitting with on the sofa at night and browsing the internet… so I’m not asking for much really. My need for it to be everything in one is why I loved the fact that it easily went from desktop PC to laptop to tablet with incredible ease. The keyboard can attach to the ENVY X2 in order to use it as a fully functional laptop, or can be separated and still functional wirelessly, using Bluetooth, so you don’t always have to be right in front of the screen to interact with it. As a tablet, the big screen is great for

browsing multiple sites and watching films and TV shows (it’s fully HD too) but I did find it a little too large for me to give up a smaller tablet device, it’s a little too heavy and big to hold comfortably with one hand for a long period of time but if you’re wanting an entertainment worthy screen, the ENVY X2 features a full HD screen that will bring your games, movies and pictures to life. It also features IPS technology, so you can see everything from wider angles. Secondly I loved the dual screen functionality, I could be working on a project and have my browser open at the same time, spitting the screen and adjusting the panel width accordingly – great if like me you hate having to keep minimising and flicking between applications. It may not sound a huge feature, and it’s not even a feature they shout about but for me it was one of those perfectly simple and yet fantastic solutions to a problem that some other tablet makers just don’t offer yet, and aren’t we all looking for something user friendly? The sound quality is also worth mentioning. Dual front-facing speakers with BeatsAudio technology make the ENVY X2 great for entertainment. The clever positioning of the speakers means you can stand the ENVY X2 on a table in front of you, using the fold up stand, and let the audio wash over you. BeatsAudio refines whatever you’re listening too, so it sounds incredibly rich to ensure immersive entertainment from music or movies. Perhaps the only criticism I have with the sound was the volume control. It often jumped from full to mute when I tried to adjust it – perhaps it’s just very sensitive or I’m heavy handed?

operating system, something I never thought would happen! Powered by Intel’s Core M processor the device was fast, performing everyday tasks at speed, multitasking between apps with ease without draining the battery. One of the only issues I experienced when using the device was online when used as a tablet. Occasionally I was unable to use the touchscreen to select tabs and options from dropdown menus on sites but I think this may be more of an issue with the webpages not

By the end of the review I had even grown used to the Windows 8.1 64 16

being fully optimised for use on tablets and phones than a bug with the touchscreen of the HP ENVY X2 itself. Also I missed it not having a back camera. In this day and age you do almost take for granted that most things have one, but sadly the ENVY X2 was lacking so you won’t be taking any selfies with this one... Aesthetically I was really pleased – it looked sleek and stylish and certainly wouldn’t look out of place on a modern and contemporary desk. The ENVY X2 comes with two

The standard chiclet keyboard is the same as the original ENVY X2 and features the same metallic silver design as the tablet itself, creating a uniform 2-in-1 that looks similar to most hybrids on the market. The alternative keyboard (which was present on the model we received) is a thing of beauty. Built with a leather exterior and palm base, the grey speckled fabric keyboard is reminiscent of a leather-bound

journal. It is so thin that it takes up less than an inch of space on your desk and the soft plastic chiclet keys are a pleasure to press. Overall I was impressed. More than I thought I would be. It’s versatility made up for the issues I encountered, knowing I had a desktop, laptop and tablet all in one that took up virtually no space was great. Its fast performance made it easy to work on and it looked great on my desk, so much so that I think it should stay there...

HEALTH & FITNESS

Do your Homework(out) No time to head to the gym? No worries. With this quick and easy home based workout you can put your body through its paces without the need for fancy equipment. MODE’s resident PT, Andrew Landells, has developed a circuit of exercises that everybody should be familiar with and which aren’t too complex so no need to worry about performing them with correct form, you can just go ahead and enjoy them...

Superman Who doesn't want to think they have super powers? As well as strengthening the back this is a great stretch when you picture trying to touch the opposing walls with your fingers and toes. Lie on your stomach on a mat or the floor with your legs outstretched behind you. Your toes are pointing toward the wall behind you. Reach your arms out overhead with your palms facing each other. Deepen your abdominal and core muscles to stabilize your spine and slowly and strongly reach both legs away from your torso until they lift a few inches off the floor. At the same time float both arms a few inches off the floor. Hold this position briefly before lowering both the arms and legs back to the ground. Repeat 20 times.

Forward Lunge Push-up The Push-up is an oldie but goodie. You can modify intensity by changing hand placement. Lie on the floor and place your hands on the floor, directly under your shoulders. Legs stretched out behind you, with the balls of your feet in contact with the floor, push yourself up through your arms until you reach the plank position, hold for a second and the slowly lower yourself back down. You should aim to make 20 reps. If you’re feeling strong go for a second set!

If I could only do one leg exercise for the rest of my life, a lunge would be my choice. Stand with your feet together. Pull your shoulder blades toward your hips and engage your abdominal/core muscles to stabilize your spine. Step forward with your left leg and shift your body weight over the leading leg so that your back knee lingers just above the floor. Then push back up and do the same on the right leg. Do 25 more on each leg.

Tip – you can make this exercise easier by leaving your knees in contact with the ground.

Bent-Knee Sit-up / Crunches Front Plank

Most people don’t know how to perform a proper sit-up/crunch – that is until now. Core Power!

This one is both great for stretching and toning your legs.

This is harder than it looks! It will feel like your back and abs hate you, but really that’s their way of saying thanks for the extra attention...

Stand with your feet parallel, hip-width apart. Engage your core and step your left leg out to the side and gradually shift your weight over onto your left side bending your left knee. Your right leg should be as straight as possible and your body weight should be distributed into the left hip. Exhale and push off firmly with your left foot, returning to starting position. Repeat the movement for the opposite side. Do this 25 times on each side.

Assume the push up position, now you can either lower yourself so you are resting on your forearms or you can place your hands directly under your shoulders and fully extend your arms so you are fully raised off the floor with just the balls of your feet and hands in contact with the ground. Your body should form a straight line, get that bum down! Now engage your core and feel the burn! Start off by holding the plank for 1 minute, gradually you can try and increase this.

Lie on your back on a mat with your knees bent, feet flat on the floor and heels a comfortable distance away from your bum. Place your hands behind your head and relax your elbows, no pulling your head up, it should stay aligned with your spine throughout. Lift your shoulders and chest up away from the mat using your abdominal muscles and hold. Slowly lower yourself back down and repeat 2 sets of 20 repetitions. This exercise is all about control and engaging your core. If you want to make this one harder you can lift and suspend your legs in a table top position.

Homemade Beauty Hacks So you’ve gone to reach for your favourite beauty product and the worst has happened. You’ve run out. It’s empty. Not even cutting the tube open is going to help. You could A) hide under a blanket and call for help or B) you could take a look in the kitchen, because the truth is, you’ve probably got something in the cupboard that will yield the same (if not better) beautifying results.

Coconut Oil It’s certainly not new but it’s definitely having its Beyoncé moment, and rightly so. Not only is this a superior and natural product packed with lots of beauty giving power, it’s also super delicious and healthy and should feature in all future cooking you do. Honestly there isn’t much coconut oil can’t do, from freshening breath (Coconut oil has antifungal and antibacterial properties. Gargling with it can help clear up germs in the mouth), to treating cuticles, it’s a life saver of an ingredient. But perhaps our favourite way to use it is, as an all over body moisturiser. It’s great at treating scars and stretch marks and can also be used to soften legs as a shaving cream!

Porridge Oats A favourite amongst bears and girls with gold locks, porridge oats are great for soothing sensitive skin and conditioning oily skin, without leaving it greasy. Our favourite beauty hack using oats is to make up a sweet and moisturising face mask – just no eating it! Mash up ¼ of a ripe banana in a bowl with two spoonfuls of instant oats, one teaspoon of almond milk and a pinch of freshly grated nutmeg. Pat it onto your face (avoiding the eye area) and leave it to work its magic for ten minutes before rinsing it off with warm water.

Avocado Another superfood to your beauty rescue. This time we’re talking hair treatments. Avocado is packed full of nutrients and natural fats and oils which are great at conditioning your hair. Simply mash up half an avocado (you can use the other half as a tasty toast topping!) and mix it up with one whisked egg yolk, one teaspoon of extra-virgin olive oil and one teaspoon of honey! Then, while you’re in the shower, apply the paste first to your ends and then all over your hair. Let it soak into your strands for 15 to 20 minutes, rinse it out, shampoo, and then rinse again.

Cinnamon This sweet smelling spice contains anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties, plus it’s naturally gritty so is great at unclogging pores and tackling breakouts. Using just some cinnamon, root ginger and sugar you can whip yourself up a superior scrub! Mix up some granulated white sugar, with a tablespoon of extra-virgin olive oil, one teaspoon of ground cinnamon and a teaspoon of freshly grated root ginger (a natural anti-inflammatory). Massage your miracle mix into your skin using circular motions and rinse! NOTE: Cinnamon can cause mild irritation to some skin types. Be sure to test a little patch on your inner arm before applying to your face. 25

GROOMING

UNBR E A K A BLE H A BITS Your significant other pretends to only have a three step beauty regime but you know the truth. You know there are probably hours of pampering that go on, not to mention the secret trips to the salon. But whilst your own routine need not be as laborious, it wouldn’t hurt for you to adopt a few habits to keep you in tip top condition? After all, if they’re going to so much trouble to impress you, the least you can do is trim your nose hair...

Have a good wash.

Tackle your toes.

Once a week get a little tougher on your skin. Whilst using a basic face wash every other day will certainly help your skin tone to look brighter, using a face scrub once a week will help remove dead skin and deeper set impurities, improving the skin’s texture. You’ll not only see an improvement in your skin but you’ll feel it too.

In the winter it’s easy to forget your feet, but come the summer months, Hobbit trotters are absolutely not acceptable. When you’re bathing or showering, use a pumice stone to tackle any rough patches, keep toenails trimmed and tweeze any unruly toe hairs. Slap on some foot moisturiser before bed and voila. You’ll wake up with perfectly tolerable toes, so when you kick your shoes off by the pool this summer, you’ll not put people off their margaritas.

Menscience Microfine Face Scrub £19 mankind.com

Jai Spa Pumice Stone £3.75 johnlewis.com Dr Hauschka Hydrating Foot Cream £16.50 dr.hauschka.com

See your barber. Regularly. Most men leave far too long between cuts. Get into the habit of booking your next appointment while you’re there! Ideally leave it no more than 4 weeks until your next visit and make sure you stick with it. If you’re thinking your locks could do with some taming, everyone else is probably thinking the same. The great thing about going regularly is that you can build up trust in your barber so you avoid any “bad haircut” drama that comes with chopping and changing stylists.

Tech up your toothbrush.

Tame the face fuzz. Beards are big, not only in popularity but in general size. Everywhere we look gents are sporting a bigger beard than the man before them (is there a competition we haven’t heard of?). Whilst we’re not against the fuzz, we do believe in essential maintenance. Use a beard trimmer to give it a tidy up WEEKLY. Oh and get yourself a beard oil whilst you’re at it, you want it look healthy and luscious because the Tom Hanks ‘Castaway’ look never looked good on anyone.

Still brushing with a manual? If you make one tech purchase this month make it a great electric toothbrush. There have been enough studies done proving that electric brushes remove significantly more plaque to make it a worthwhile investment. Don’t forget to use mouthwash after you brush in the morning and to always floss. Now show us those pearly whites. Philips Sonicare HX9352/04 DiamondClean Electric Toothbrush £249.95 johnlewis.com

Adopting with Barnardo’s Kathryn, 42, and Martin, 43, adopted seven year old James* when he was five years old. Here is their story... Kathryn says: “We always felt very much like a family, just the two of us and I never had an overwhelming urge to be pregnant that some women have. I know it sounds unusual but one night I had a vivid dream that I was the mother of a small boy who we’d adopted. I had this tremendous sense of peace and joy and it wouldn’t leave me. I knew I wanted to be a mum and that adoption was for us. I spoke to Martin about it – he was honest and at first said he didn’t know if he could love a child that wasn’t biologically his own. But we decided to look into adoption further so we started doing some research.” The couple approached children’s charity Barnardo’s - Kathryn says it was a name she was familiar with from her own childhood and her dad had been a ‘Barnardo’s boy’ and grown up in a Barnardo’s home. They also spent time talking to friends who had adopted children to learn about their experiences. In July the couple first met their Barnardo’s worker and after going through the assessment process, they were approved as adopters by the Barnardo’s panel just six months later. Kathryn says: “For us, our adoption journey really is a love story. We were told by friends that the approval process was intrusive – yes you are scrutinised, but for us I can honestly say it was cathartic, very pleasant and dare I say, fun. I put that down to Barnardo’s and the experience and commitment of the staff. You reflect on it and it is unusual – strangers deciding whether I would become a mummy or not. But for us it was an extremely positive process.” Kathryn and Martin were matched with James and were shown a video of the lively five-year-old. “He looked wide-eyed and beautiful. We said we’d like to meet this little boy. That first meeting was wonderful. We met after school at his foster carers’ home. He walked in with this big smiling face and we knelt down to meet him. He had an awkward way of saying hello so spoke to us through his teddy. Then he got a board game out and we played, laughed and giggled. It was lovely.” There were several days of introductions before James came to live at his new home in Yorkshire. “There is pain as well as joy on the day when you leave the foster carers to start a new life together. James’ foster carers were such lovely people it hurt to take him away in a sense. And that first night at home we didn’t sleep, we took it in shifts to keep being near him and listen to him breathing.

It reminded me of what friends have told me it’s like when you bring a baby home. Martin was able to take four months off work so we had a blissful summer getting to know each other, playing in the garden, paddling in streams. It was a very precious time.” Kathryn says there have been many great highs since James became part of their family a year and a half ago. “I believe James understood from day one that we were his forever family. He knows there are no more moves. There are lots of hugely precious moments. Taking James to buy his shoes for the first time, giving him his first bath, his first bed time story. To have these firsts with a five year old is so meaningful, it’s not just perfunctory. Walking to school now, when James grabs your hand it’s just magical.” James was not reaching his milestones when he came to live with Kathryn and Martin. “He refused to write any letters and couldn’t count. But now he’s flourishing academically. He has a passion for learning and can’t get enough of books. It feels wonderful to have helped unlock that.” “I feel the redemptive nature of adoption has been like therapy for James. He is blossoming. Before he came to us he was ‘the naughty boy’ because 27

of his behaviour, that’s how the anger and upset presented itself. With love, encouragement and security, he doesn’t identify as that boy anymore.” Kathryn added: “We have a really deep and special love, it doesn’t matter that the biology isn’t there. We are the luckiest people in the world to have found James and that is thanks to Barnardo’s.” Kathryn would encourage anyone thinking about adoption to contact Barnardo’s. “We chose Barnardo’s as we know it’s their passion to place children with safe, secure and loving families. We felt looked after by Barnardo’s. The support throughout the process, the speed at which they make things happen for you and the after support is brilliant.” *James is a false name. A-Z Wardrobe Essentials... G is for Gentlemen’s Hat It’s important to note that we’re not talking hats in general. Specifically we’re looking at gentlemen’s hats, which can be worn by both sexes. Such a hat will get you noticed but offer concealment at the same time. Key styles; the Fedora, Trilby and Panama are timeless and when worn correctly, incredibly sexy. Nothing says confidence more than a woman walking into a room wearing a gentlemen’s hat with style. A Fedora, demands to be worn with attitude. Popularised by gangsters and detectives, a Fedora implies menace and mystery. Similar in style to the Fedora, the Trilby, with its narrower brim has been sported by stars such as Victoria Beckham and Agyness Deyn while the Panama, made of plaited toquilla straw is light and perfect for travelling, think Clark Gabel in Gone with the Wind.

Saint Laurent Feather and GrosgrainTrimmed Rabbit-Felt Hat £705

Sensi Studio Embellished Toquilla Straw Panama Hat £100

Karl Lagerfeld Printed GrosgrainTrimmed Wool-Felt Fedora £145

The key to wearing a hat is to do so with conviction. One must never half commit to a hat. Hat Fact: The Fedora is often associated with men but it actually gets its name from the female character played by actress Sarah Bernhardt who wore the hat in the 1880’s play, Fedora.

Maison Michel Andre GrosgrainTrimmed Rabbit-Felt Trilby £345

Eugenia Kim Craig Two-Tone Woven Straw Trilby £245

For the boys... You gents wear hats so well, just take Johnny Depp and Frank Sinatra… so don’t stop now. We love this Fedora for adding old school charm to an outfit while the modern chunky zip to one side keeps it modern and edgy! Larose Zip-Trimmed Rabbit-Felt Fedora Hat £225 28

JOB: The Prince of Wales

STYLE: Off Duty

STYLE: Suited & Booted

STYLE: Smart Casual

STYLE: English Gentleman

To be fair, he is an international supermodel so it’s kind of his job to look good in everything but still, David has exceptional style. He looks dapper in a suit but equally dashing when dressed down. His style is easy and accessible, and we love how sophisticated he makes off duty dressing look. Whilst we can confidently say you could copy his style. His rugged good looks and piercing gaze? Perhaps not so easy to steal.

All those in favour of a boring and over worn suit, look away now, because you’ll find none of those hanging in Eddie’s wardrobe. He owns which ever red carpet he walks and it’s no surprise. His youthful style and lack of fear when it comes to sporting a printed or brightly hued suit has become somewhat his signature.

Idris makes walking that awkward line between smart and casual look a doddle. We love his laid back approach to dressing and this knitwear, denim and brogue combo is a look we urge all of you to steal. Perfect for a trip to the pub, a family day out or a drinks party with friends this look can carry you from day to night with ease.

If there is one man you can count on to always be wearing a finely made British wool suit it’s our Charles. He’s a proud advocate of British made fashion and rarely makes a fashion faux pas. His style is dependable, respectable and refined. He may only be our Prince for now, but he’s certainly King in the style stakes.

WEDDINGS

Gifts for your Girl She’s about to commit her life to being your wife, she’s going to promise to love you, cherish you, support you and laugh at your jokes, even when they’re not funny. Yes, saying “I Do” to you will seem gift enough to her, but it’s good form to buy your bride to be a wedding gift*, so don’t trip up before you’ve even hit the aisle... (*this may or may not have been written by a woman)

Cartier Pink Gold LOVE Bracelet £4,450 A child of 1970s New York, the LOVE collection seals a love that defies boundaries. With undeniably elegant lines and stamped with the trademark screw motif, the creation is a timeless tribute to passionate romance. Studded with diamonds, yellow, white or rose gold: how far would you go for LOVE?

Sydney Evan Taken Necklace £900 A playful necklace with added sparkle. Let the world know she’s taken with this glittering ‘taken’ necklace by celebrity favourite jewellery brand Sydney Evan. Great for layering with other similar styles, this necklace is designed to be delicate and understated, crafted from 14K yellow gold, and embellished with shimmering pave set diamonds on a thin gold chain. A great everyday necklace, this simple yet eye catching design would make a heartfelt gift for any blushing bride.

If you’ve already spent greatly on each other and the wedding, and your wife to be has told you not to buy her a gift, ignore her. Honestly, do you want to risk being the one out of the two of you who actually sticks to this and then sheepishly has to accept the thoughtful and probably sentimental gift she lovingly picked out? No. Instead opt for something low key, fabulous and fun such as Kate Spade’s “Happily Ever After” passport holder. We guarantee she will show it off at every opportunity as you set off for your honeymoon!

Tiffany & Co. LUCIDA® Drop Hook Diamond Earrings POA Nothing quite says I love you like a pair of huge diamond earrings… What? Diamonds are a girl’s best friend remember? These stunning drop diamond earrings will continue to shine with every passing year of marriage and will be a lasting reminder of your beautiful day.

Melissa Odabash Personalised Bridal Bikini £200 Turn up the heat on your honeymoon with this chic personalised bikini! Embellished on the back of the bikini brief in small crystals, choose something different and personalise her white bikini with the first initial of your second name or 'Just Married'.

Kate Spade Wedding Belles Travel Passport Holder £65

Blossom Full Bloom White Gold Watch 18ct White Gold and Diamonds £29,750

Lulu Guinness Metal Frame Lips Clutch £395

A charming watch for your charming lady. This elegant and stunning watch from Boodles features a white mother of pearl dial and diamond set bezel. Why not set it to the time you are due to get married for an extra special touch.

The moment when they say, “You may now kiss the bride”, is one of the most anticipated and beautiful and what better way to commemorate that moment than with a fabulous Lulu Guinness Lips clutch? Go on, seal it with a kiss.

FEATURED DESIGNER:

As a designer of high end hotels, Reda Amalou’s significant experience as an architect and designer shows, through his stunning furniture collection.

42

Each piece defines its own space; the lines are pure and expressive French man in London, Reda Amalou trained and qualified as an architect in the UK, attending the University of East London before founding AW² in 1997 in Paris. From the start, Reda Amalou has led the firm to become a design-oriented practice with a strong international track record and in 2000, Stephanie Ledoux joined him as a partner in the firm. The practice has since developed into a high-end design office recognised across the world, earning awards around the globe. With AW², Reda developed architecture, interiors and furniture designs, which naturally led him to create his own furniture and accessories collection, under his own brand, Reda Amalou Designs. The collection combines elegance, simplicity and sobriety. Often inspired from modern 20th century architecture the objects and furniture are designed with a unique formal identity as well as a sense of structure. The materials used range from leather to bronze and walnut, with rich deep textures. Each piece defines its own space; the lines are pure and expressive. The collection is artistic and inviting and whilst the pieces may seem design led and sculptural they are useable, take the ‘Egg Table’ which serves not only as a table but as a stool. Unlike some furniture designers who fail to straddle the worlds of style and usability, Reda Amalou offers design conscious home owners a “practically beautiful” solution. redaamalou.com

An authentic

Capitol Building, Washington, DC

American Experience in the Capital Region USA

Home to some of America’s most iconic landmarks, Capital Region USA comprises Washington, DC, Virginia and Maryland. Washington, DC is often described as America’s ultimate hometown. The city offers visitors world-class museums and monuments, unique neighbourhoods, top-rated restaurants, gorgeous parks and gardens, and endless performing arts options. Where else in the world can you visit with a 19-foot President Lincoln, read the real US Constitution, see Dorothy’s ruby red slippers and admire internationally acclaimed art? Leaving the capital behind, follow one of the scenic byways into the neighbouring states of Virginia and Maryland, where you can discover the charms of the Chesapeake Bay or the quiet solitude of Shenandoah National Park, two of America’s greatest natural wonders. Along the way, quaint small towns will surprise and delight you. History buffs will marvel at the region’s collection of historic attractions and Civil War driving trails, while those with a foodie focus can enjoy farm-to-table cuisine, perfectly paired with a fresh local wine.

Road Trips and Trails Take a road trip along one of these fun and fascinating trails connecting notable parks, waterways, wineries and historic landmarks.

Wine Trails: Sip & Savour With about 250 wineries, it’s easy to sip your way around the region. Virginia was recently named one of the top 10 wine destinations by Wine Enthusiast magazine. More than 20 wine trails wind through the state’s picturesque small towns, scenic mountains and beautiful countryside. In Maryland, wine trails meander from hills and valleys to the Eastern Shore.

Chesapeake Bay Gateways Network: Relax & Refresh This collection of parks, wildlife refuges, museums and waterways is an ideal way to explore the famous bay and its rivers. Visit historic lighthouses, tour Fort McHenry to discover the inspiration for America’s national anthem and feast on fresh seafood as you go.

Scenic Byways: Explore & Sightsee National Scenic Byways are roads recognised for their cultural, historic or recreational significance. Travel along the region’s 13 byways to explore historic towns, mountain vistas, lakes and historic landmarks. 62

FOOD & DRINK

Raithwaite Estate Hotel & Restaurant Review With its rural and isolated location, Raithwaite Estate promises peace and tranquillity and yet is only a stone’s throw from the bustling seaside hotspot of Whitby. Set between the Yorkshire Moors and the North Sea, Raithwaite Estate holds a commanding position. As we set off on our journey to the estate the skies were grey and the clouds rolling in but by the time we reached our destination the grey was gone and the sun was shining meaning our views of the coastline and rolling moors were spectacular, setting the tone for the entire trip.

64

Since its grand refurbishment and launch in 2011, Raithwaite, which describes itself as a luxury country retreat has grown from a 45 bedroom hotel into a vast estate offering contemporary accommodation in The Keep, exclusivity at the luxury Lakehouse and private country accommodation at The Fold, a collection of luxury cottages. As we arrived, we were greeted warmly and escorted to Poacher’s Bar where we enjoyed a drink whilst our bags were taken to our room. Drinks finished we were shown to our accommodation which was located within the main hall. The room was spacious and tastefully decorated with all the facilities one might expect from a high end hotel. We had fluffy white robes and slippers, which we had already seen other guests wrapped up in as they padded down the stairs from their own rooms to the lower floor spa. We also had a well-stocked range of teas and coffees, although they were missing my essential Green Leaf Tea, but as I discovered, this was easily rectified with a quick call to reception. The TV & Wi-Fi system were easy to operate although general phone signal was weak due to the venues sheer isolation, but perhaps this isn’t a bad thing if what you’re seeking is peace and quiet. Our bathroom was large and with easily operated heated flooring, very comfortable, with

an assortment of luxury toiletries. After an obligatory bounce on the bed to assess its immediate comfort, we were impressed. Pleased with our room we decided to take advantage of the hall’s gym facilities before dinner. Located on the lower ground floor the gym, whilst small, was well equipped with two treadmills, two bike machines and a range of free weights, although we can imagine with the increasing size of the estate, a larger gym might prove popular. It also gave us a chance to have a peek at the pool ahead of our planned visit to the spa in the morning. As our trip took place during the half term holiday, it wasn’t surprising to us to the see the pool full of happy and splashing children and families, but prospective visitors to the estate needn’t fear. Peter the concierge informed and assured us that the hours during which children can use the pool facilities are strictly monitored so you’ll have plenty of opportunity to enjoy uninterrupted quiet. 65

Having made a little extra room for dinner after working up a sweat, we retired to our room and freshened up before attending dinner in the Brace Restaurant. Located within the main hotel, the Brace Restaurant offers English cuisine, priding itself on its use of locally sourced ingredients to provide a fine dining experience. It is tastefully decorated with an impressive glass fronted wine cellar and beautiful conservatory which offers diners a dinner by twilight experience. We were seated in the conservatory, next to the baby grand piano with a backdrop of twinkling fairy lights which was certainly impressive and romantic. One thing worth noting at this point was the gracious and polite manner of all the staff. Not just in the restaurant, but throughout the estate, nothing seemed too much trouble and they all seemed genuinely keen to help and improve our stay. The waiting staff eloquently went through the menu and specials, before leaving us to fiercely debate what to order amongst ourselves. Everything on the menu was to our taste and the special sounded delicious too. My fellow diner and I agreed to order completely differently so we could sample as much of the menu as possible, although I must admit I wasn’t particularly good at holding up my end of the bargain...

FOOD & DRINK

Raithwaite Estate Hotel & Restaurant Review

To start we enjoyed the Duck and the Mackerel. The Gressingham Duck, with Foie Gras pressing, Duck Ham and Dried Fig Chutney was simply delicious. The chutney was sharp and tangy and perfectly complemented the meatiness of the duck while my fellow diner divulged that the Soused and Peppered Mackerel with Candied Cucumber was cooked wonderfully and was brilliantly refreshing. As we had chosen such an assortment of dishes to enjoy throughout the evening, we chose a young red wine, bright in colour with a full aroma of fruit and red berries. The 2012 Vina Palaciega Rioja Tempranillo Tinto is suited to all types of meats, and serves well with pasta dishes and cheese, which would be important. For our mains we chose the venison and ravioli. My partner who had selected the Black Forest Venison served with Morello Cherries, Smoked Potato and a Dark Chocolate Sauce was impressed with the full bodied flavour of the dish. It was rich and indulgent but not so that it was ever too much. The venison was cooked perfectly, while the smokiness of the potatoes added extra depth to the dish. My own dish, of Wild Mushroom Ravioli, Rocket Salad, Parmesan and a Quail’s Egg served with a Wild Mushroom Sauce was also packed full of flavour. I am not vegetarian and yet I often find myself drawn to the vegetarian options, perhaps because I love pasta…The portion size was just right and it must be said that the presentation of all the dishes was executed brilliantly. The ravioli was expertly cooked, with a good amount of filling and a perfect firmness to the pasta. The quail’s egg was a lovely touch and it too was well cooked, in fact I could have enjoyed many more! The accompanying sauce was rich and creamy but not too heavy and I was left feeling satisfied and content. Plates cleared we were shown the dessert menu, which we pondered for some time. Both my

dining partner and I never like to feel rushed when eating out, we are conversationalists and like our dining experience to feel leisurely which is something the staff aided wonderfully. When we were at last ready to order our desserts, I chose the Treacle Tart, with Salted Caramel and Clotted Cream whilst my partner chose a selection of cheeses. (I told you it was important that the wine paired well with cheese.) I love to order a dessert and I always sit in anticipation of it arriving, but often I am overwhelmed with the generous portions offered. Whilst my eyes widen with delight at the sheer volume of sweet stuff, my stomach isn’t always up to the job and I hate the disappointment of leaving any and so often find myself overfed and uncomfortable. However no such disaster here. The portion was perfectly sized, just enough so I didn’t feel like I’d been “had” but not too much that I felt the need to retire immediately and undo a button! The treacle tart was sweet and sticky, and as I write this and reimagine it I am wishing I had another. I can’t honestly remember if I let my dining partner sample it, but I wouldn’t be surprised if I hadn’t, I would certainly say it was a pudding too good to share. My partner who instead enjoyed a selection of cheeses and biscuits and who did share because I left them no choice, remarked how varied the “cheese choice” was. I could go on, but for sake of not 66

turning this review into a short story I will move on to the other details of our stay. Following our meal we snuck into Poacher’s Bar for a cheeky nightcap, Andrew opted for the Japanese 12 year old Yamazaki whisky whilst I decided to enjoy a cocktail. Working in partnership with Laurent Perrier, the estate offers a Champagne cocktail which I believe is a must try. Finally, we decided to retire to our room which we found to have been turned down in preparation for our return. With black out curtains and a most comfortable bed I can confidently say I enjoyed one of the best night’s sleep I’d had in a while and it was quite begrudgingly that I woke for breakfast. Now I’ve already given you quite a detailed account of the culinary expertise and skills of Raithwaite Estate so I will not go into it all over again as I recall breakfast for you, but I will say this. The breakfast selection on offer in the Brace Restaurant is quite simply one of the best I’ve encountered. Whilst some might think that a buffet style breakfast isn’t exactly the height of luxury, I would disagree. My idea of a fabulous breakfast is an unrivalled choice of dishes. Whether you are partial to a full Yorkshire breakfast with all the trimmings, a bowl of cereal, a selection of pastries, a plate of international meats and cheeses, a freshly cooked omelette featuring your personal selection of fillings – prepared right in front of your very eyes, or fruit and yoghurt, they have it all and more. It’s no secret that I love breakfast and had we not already had plans to visit the spa I could have sat all morning and sampled everything. I can say with some confidence that the breakfast was one of my favourite parts of the whole stay. Having been dragged from the breakfast table (kicking and screaming – it was terribly embarrassing for my partner), I gathered my swimwear and descended to the spa. As Whitby’s only luxury spa, it offers four treatment rooms, a

relaxation room, heated pool, Jacuzzi, steam room, sauna and a fully equipped gymnasium. Open to both residents and non-residents, the Spa offers a variety of treatments to aid, prevent and treat a number of ailments or simply to take away the stress of a busy life. I had previously arranged to enjoy an Ultimate Aromatherapy Experience Full Body Massage and enjoy it I did. Isabel, my massage therapist was delightful and clearly knew how to do her job, she put me at ease and was soothing, calm and polite. I felt I went in a hunched over, haggard mess and I left a beautiful, relaxed and poised woman. Special praise to Isabel for working her magic on my beaten and broken body. Andrew, who is a keen athlete, relishes the opportunity for a deep and healing massage but often finds many therapists too reserved and lacking confidence to really hammer his muscles but he met his match in Zoe who subjected him to an Intensive Muscle Release Treatment. His tired, aching and over worked muscles were rigorously treated and he said he could feel the tension melting away and all the niggles and aches he arrived with, gone. Following my treatment I was sure to enjoy the pool, sauna and steam room, desperately swimming to work off the four course breakfast I had earlier enjoyed! The spa was quiet and relaxed and not too busy, and as promised by Peter, child free during my visit. My only note would be the size of the changing rooms. Whilst the showers are large and there are secure lockers and two private changing cubicles, space is limited, whilst residents can of course return to their rooms to change, guests who are using the spa after having checked out of their rooms, or non-resident guests to the spa have restricted space to change and so I can imagine as the estate continues to grow and word spreads further of its greatness it might become a little busy! Before departing the hotel, we were treated to an extensive tour of the grounds and additional

accommodation, including The Keep, which offers contemporary accommodation and an alternative restaurant, The Fold, a collection of private cottages perfect for an extended holiday and the grand and exclusive Lakehouse, a private, gated six bedroom house, perfect for wedding parties. What stood out during our stay was the sheer attention to detail, from the branded estate Rolls Royce - used to ferry guests around the grounds, to the superior décor and beautifully landscaped gardens. Raithwaite Estate is quite an anomaly in the world of luxury boutique hotels. It is perfectly suited for the couple looking for a romantic and relaxing weekend retreat, the business looking for an ideal corporate break or the family wanting all the fun of an activity packed, seaside holiday without the bad B&B experience. It caters for all but does so quietly and without fuss. No one looks out of place and yet guest’s reasons for visiting are all so varied. It is fair to say we were pained to leave and were already discussing with staff the idea of returning to experience the other accommodation on offer before we’d even got back to the car. I’ve got my eye on The Lakehouse... Pure Indulgence Package – Accommodation in an Executive Room, including Yorkshire breakfast, three course evening meal and a 50 minute Spa treatment to the value of £65 per person from £340 per night, raithwaiteestate.com 67

Review – No5 Restaurant On the border of Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire sits the little market town of Retford, within its heart lies a quaint restaurant with big ambitions and quality food to match.

Arriving at the Georgian fronted building you are greeted by low ceilings and a warm cosy atmosphere, having had a full refurbishment in 2012, when Chef Ian and his partner Liz took over, turning the property into a contemporary venue with a country house feel, with deep red walls and little touches which I’ll leave you to look for when you visit. Each table was slightly different, but all in dark wood, tying them all together alongside the comfy oversized chairs. With large church candles adorning the tables the atmosphere was both relaxed and intimate.

To begin we started with King Scallops, served with Black Pudding, Crispy Pancetta, a Hen’s Egg and Crispy Fried Bread from the A la Carte Menu and Homemade Salmon Fish Cakes with Lemon and Tartar Sauce from the Market Menu. The fish cakes had a wonderful taste with a slightly salty batter that was offset by the lemon and tartar sauce, a simple dish that melted in the mouth. The scallops starter seemed to have too many different flavours but each part was cooked well and pairing each item up on the plate allowed for different tastes which I actually enjoyed. 69

FOOD REVIEW – NO5 RESTAURANT

As the mains came out the restaurant was beginning to fill up which I have rarely seen on a weekday but is testament to how good this place is. Not content with one dish with scallops I opted to go for Fillet of Yorkshire Beef with King Prawns, Scallops, Garlic and Herb Butter, flamed in Brandy from the A la Carte Menu whilst my partner in crime opted for Crisp Crackling Belly Pork served with Mashed Potato, Sherry Jus and Apple Sauce from the Market Menu. The beef was cooked to perfection for me, the right colour of red in the middle with the tiniest amount of blood within, you could tell it was a quality cut. The scallops and large king prawns were, as expected, cooked well and I liked the fact the herb butter and flamed brandy wasn’t overpowering, just gave a hint of additional depth and flavour, allowing the meat to take centre stage. The dish went well with the option of dauphinoise potatoes, but just so you know, there was also the option of new potatoes or thick cut chips with any of the main dishes. The belly pork was big, and good thing too as it allowed me to taste a good chunk before my wife 70

ate it all, her favourite was the crackling which was the right side of salty and lovely and crisp. The pork underneath pulled apart and was a delight with the apple sauce and mashed potato. After a quick rest after the generously portioned mains, we took a look at the dessert menu, and without being able to make a decision we went with the assiette of desserts allowing us to share and taste a selection. We enjoyed a White Chocolate and Raspberry Creme Brûlée (which I had most of and was delicious), a Pot au Chocolate which was smooth in consistency and light, which would be great on its own after a heavy meal. I didn’t get a look in on the Malteaser Chocolate Cake, which says it all really, but I did try the Dark Chocolate Torte which had a wonderfully smooth and rich taste. All the dishes were simple on paper but were all cooked very well, concentrating on taste rather that presentation, which sadly is so often not the case nowadays. I can honestly say it was one of the best meals we’ve had in a while and would be well worth the trip down.

FOOD & DRINK

Happy Hour at Home There’s never a queue, you don’t have to tip the server and your drink is made just the way you like it every time. Where is this sensational bar you ask? Well my friend, if you so wish, it could be in your very house. Having a home bar needn’t be a headache; you simply need to invest in some basic equipment

and stock up on a few essential liquors, and you’ll have friends clamouring to party at yours every

weekend. Here’s our essential guide to making sure yours is the best stocked bar in town.

BARWARE Muddler

Bar Spoon

The essential mojito-maker tool! This device “muddles” up ingredients (like herbs, fruit, sugar, and spices) to release their flavours and allow them to seep into your tasty beverages.

These long-handled spoons are used for mixing drinks in tall glasses, as well as creating layered drinks by various techniques (often involving pouring a liquid over the back of the spoon so that it enters the glass slowly and doesn’t mix in with the other drink components.)

Bottle Opener / Corkscrew This marvellous contraption opens bottles, of the beer and wine variety. Perhaps the most important piece of bar equipment EVER. We say have two, it’s never wise to keep someone in need of another drink waiting as this gets passed around amongst guests.

Strainer Used in tandem with a cocktail shaker, this tool is used to strain ice from a drink after it’s been shaken. It’s essential for serving a “straight up” drink—which is a drink shaken with ice to slightly chill it, but served in a glass without any ice.

Jigger A handy measuring tool to keep at the bar, a jigger usually has two different cone-sized compartments - one most often holds 1.5 oz., while the other holds a fraction or multiple of that.

Cocktail Shaker

Ice Bucket & Tongs A bucket for ice. Genius. The most important thing is to keep this clean, and topped up! We suggest having cubes for serving in drinks and some crushed ice handy for mixing cocktails. 75

If there is one tool that is absolutely essential for making cocktails, it is the cocktail shaker. There are three main types of cocktail shaker: the Boston shaker, the cobbler shaker, and the less common French shaker, sometimes called a Parisian shaker. No matter which of the three styles you choose, it’s important to make sure it is big enough to allow for plenty of ice to be packed in, and for plenty of space to shake the ice around. Other than that, the choice is largely down to personal preference.

CULTURE

HAPPY HOUR AT HOME

THE LIQUORS You’ve got the tools to mix up a storm in a glass, now you just need the ingredients. Personal tastes dictate the specific spirits you choose to stock but to keep these basic liquors to hand and you’ll please most.

Vodka

Gin

White Rum

Bourbon

Tequila

Vodka is the workhorse of the liquor cabinet, used in basic drinks such as vodka tonics, screwdrivers, and the vodka martini.

For Martinis, Gin and Tonics, tom collinses, etc. Every bar must have gin, it’s non-negotiable. Ask anyone.

You could use it to make Piña Coladas but then if that’s what you like to drink, we probably shouldn’t be friends. Light rum is essential for mixing up Mojitos, Daiquiris and Cuba Libres.

A bottle of bourbon is a requirement for Manhattans, Old Fashioneds, and Whiskey Sours.

We’re not sure about ‘happy’ but we’re confident that Tequila makes Margaritas, Sunrises, and Palomas. The best tequilas are made from 100 percent agave; check the label.

Once you’ve got the essential spirits, you’ll want to stock up on mixers, think soda, tonic, vermouth, coke, orange juice... we could go on. Also, don’t forget the lemons, limes, salt, olives and mint and hey presto, you’ve got yourself a home bar. Now, we’ll have a martini...

At a hastily arranged press conference, hosted by BBC Radio 1’s Zane Lowe, the follow-up to 2003’s Think Tank was described as a return to “the way we recorded when we started,” Damon Albarn said that the album was similar in style to the music David Bowie made during his mid 70’s Berlin period.

The album features 12 brand new songs and has been produced by James Ford, who has previously worked with HAIM, and Florence & The Machine. READS The Opposite of Loneliness

Outline

By Marina Keegan

By Rachel Cusk

Marina Keegan’s star was on the rise when she graduated from Yale in May 2012. She had a play that was to be produced at the New York International Fringe Festival and a job waiting for her at the New Yorker. Tragically, five days after graduation, Marina died in a car crash. As her family, friends and classmates, deep in grief, joined to create a memorial service for Marina, her unforgettable last essay for the Yale Daily News, ‘The Opposite of Loneliness’, went viral, receiving more than 1.4 million hits. She had struck a chord. Even though she was just 22 when she died, Marina left behind a rich, expansive trove of prose that, like her title essay, captures the hope, uncertainty and possibility of her generation. The Opposite of Loneliness is an assemblage of Marina’s essays and stories that articulates the universal struggle we all face as we work out what we aspire to be and how we can harness our talents to make an impact on the world.

A woman writer goes to Athens in the height of summer to teach a writing course. Though her own circumstances remain indistinct, she becomes the audience to a chain of narratives, as the people she meets tell her one after another, the stories of their lives. Beginning with the neighbouring passenger on the flight out and his tales of fast boats and failed marriages, the storytellers talk of their loves and ambitions and pains, their anxieties, their perceptions and daily lives. In the stifling heat and noise of the city the sequence of voice begins to weave a complex human tapestry. Shortlisted for the Folio Prize 2015, Outline is a novel about writing and talking, about self-effacement and self-expression, about the desire to create and the human art of self-portraiture in which that desire finds its universal form.

Go Set a Watchman

So You’ve Been Publicly Shamed

By Harper Lee

By Jon Ronson

Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird is one of the most iconic and widely read novels of the twentieth century, and now, fifty-five years after its original publication, a sequel has been announced.

From the Sunday Times top ten bestselling author of The Psychopath Test, a captivating and brilliant exploration of one of our world’s most underappreciated forces: shame. For the past three years, Jon Ronson has travelled the world meeting recipients of high-profile public shamings. The shamed are people like us - people who, say, made a joke on social media that came out badly, or made a mistake at work. Once their transgression is revealed, collective outrage circles with the force of a hurricane and the next thing they know they’re being torn apart by an angry mob, jeered at, demonized, sometimes even fired from their job. A great renaissance of public shaming is sweeping our land. Justice has been democratized. The silent majority are getting a voice. But what are we doing with our voice? Simultaneously powerful and hilarious in the way only Jon Ronson can be, So You’ve Been Publicly Shamed is a deeply honest book about modern life, full of eye-opening truths about the escalating war on human flaws - and the very scary part we all play in it.

Go Set a Watchman is set during the mid-1950s and features many of the characters from To Kill a Mockingbird some twenty years later. Scout (Jean Louise Finch) has returned to Maycomb from New York to visit her father Atticus. She is forced to grapple with issues both personal and political as she tries to understand both her father’s attitude toward society, and her own feelings about the place where she was born and spent her childhood. After To Kill a Mockingbird was published in 1960, Harper Lee set aside Go Set a Watchman, and never returned to it. The original manuscript of the novel was considered to have been lost until the autumn of 2014, when Tonja Carter discovered it in a secure location where it had been affixed to an original typescript of To Kill a Mockingbird.

Release Date: 10th April 2015

Release date: 20th March 2015

Helen Mirren stars in the compelling true life tale of Maria Altmann, a Holocaust survivor who, in the 1980s, went to the law courts to reclaim five paintings by the artist Gustav Klimt, which, after being stolen by the Nazis, ended up in the possession of the Austrian government. An all star cast, including Ryan Reynolds, Katie Holmes, Charles Dance, Daniel Bruhl, Max Irons and Jonathan Pryce, help bring this little known true story to life in director Simon Curtis’ captivating drama about an ordinary person who takes on an entire government in order to take back what is rightfully hers.

Ex-soldier Sean Penn goes on the run in this relentless, globe-trotting action thriller from the director of ‘Taken’. Former Special Forces soldier and military contractor Jim Terrier (Sean Penn) is haunted by his murky past, in which he did more harm than good. His friend Stan (Ray Winstone) suggests exposing the organisation he worked for, using incriminating footage he recorded secretly. But Terrier is then betrayed and becomes the target of some of the most ruthless operatives on the planet. Desperate to clear his name, he flees across Europe in a deadly game of cat and mouse. Director Pierre Morel transformed Liam Neeson into one of the world’s leading action stars with ‘Taken’. Now he does the same for Sean Penn with this gripping adaptation of cool French crime writer Jean-Patrick Manchette’s novel ‘The Prone Gunman’.

Being the Boss

Handling the Boss

WHETHER YOU’RE THE PERSON WHO MAKES THE DECISIONS OR THE ONE WHO CARRIES OUT THE ORDERS, HAVING YOUR WITS ABOUT YOU AND KNOWING HOW TO BEHAVE AROUND YOUR EMPLOYEES, COLLEAGUES AND SUPERIORS IS KEY. It’s imperative that you acknowledge boundaries. Regardless of how well you get on or how highly they value your opinion, they are and always will be your boss.

Your relationship as a boss with your employees is crucial to the success of a workplace. Taking time to know each of your employees, from the person who makes the tea to your second in command, makes for a happy office.

Be professional at all times. They are your senior and therefore you should be respectful and mindful of this. It’s best not to offer advice unless asked.

Intimidation and fear is a tactic employed by to many bosses but rarely one that actually rewards them the respect they so desperately want for their employees. Don’t be a bullying boss, you’re setting yourself up to be the office hate figure and will quickly turn off your staff.

Whilst it’s important not to come across rude and argumentative, being polite and wary of boundaries doesn’t mean you have to be a Yes Man all the time. As long as you execute the delivery correctly, disagreeing with your boss can be seen as a brave challenge.

Listen to your staff. A good boss recognises strengths, understands workplace procedures and sets achievable and fair goals for employees.

Should a crisis breakout, wait for the panic and initial furore to die down. It’s important that you take your boss solutions not problems. So, make it work and prove your value.

Acknowledge a job well done. Don’t be afraid to tell your team that you’re happy with their performance. Encouragement, praise and rewards will work wonders for morale and make sure they continue to put in effort every day. 87

The Office POD CHANGING THE WAY PEOPLE WORK FROM HOME

Now more than ever, employees are exercising their right to work flexibly and employers are looking at ways to cut overheads and reduce costs. OfficePOD is lifting the lid on dead space. Through their unique ability to be located both outside and inside buildings, OfficePOD’s range of products offer unrivalled choice for those who need to make better use of their valuable real estate.

square box room and try to create the best possible environment in which to be and work. The PODs are designed to be of modular construction to allow maximum flexibility in the future and to allow parts to be interchangeable; PODs can be extended if more space is needed. All parts are capable of being carried through a terraced house; the PODs arrive flat packed and it takes a day to erect the smaller PODs and 2 days for the larger PODs.

In his previous life, as someone who had the responsibility for a large company’s real estate, Stephen Tanner – the man behind OfficePOD, was struck by the huge amount of time, money and materials he saw being wasted on the continual ‘churn’ of moving staff, fitting out offices and then scrapping it all a few years later. OfficePOD’s solution was to create an ‘optimum’ working space for a single person, the POD, and lease them direct to the employer in order that they could be given to staff to work from at home. His hope is to provide choice to organisations, reduce the commute for so many staff; meaning the centralised office would never have to move again!

Prices start at around £10,000 plus installation for the smallest POD; which includes the internal fit-out, furniture, lighting, power, heating and ventilation. “We just need a power socket to plug into and it’s ready to use; plug-and-play. Actually we are moving to creating a wide choice of standard furniture and finishes options, much like buying a car, rather than a wholly bespoke service” said Stephen. They also offer a 10 year warranty but if looked after then the PODs should last for 50+ years. Bred From the Same DNA The more you look at the GSX-R1000, the more you realize that beauty has many forms. Bred from technologies conceived, refined, and track tested in the development of MotoGP machines like the GSX-RR, the GSX-R1000 proves that beauty is much more than skin deep.

For more than a decade, the GSX-R1000 was the most successful name in 1,000cm3 productionbased road racing around the globe, earning it the title of The Top Performer. It’s a record and title gained through a dedicated drive to Own the Racetrack—a passion that runs deep among Suzuki engineers. Bred from the same DNA as their MotoGP machines, the GSX-R1000 draws heavily on Suzuki’s racing expertise. Commemorating the marque’s 2015 return to MotoGP racing, the new GSX-R1000 is dressed in Suzuki Racing Blue to express Suzuki’s spirit and passion for racing. Equipped with an Antilock Brake System, it’s ready to reclaim its Top Performer status and Own the Racetrack.

between the three maps, which are displayed as “A”, “B”, and “C” on the instrument panel.

Anti-lock Brake System: A standard feature on the GSX-R1000 is an ABS system that enhances brake performance and monitors wheel speeds to match stopping power to available traction helping to prevent wheels from locking up due to hard braking or changes in road conditions. Front brakes feature Brembo radial-mount monoblock calipers that deliver exceptional controllability with immense stopping power.

The “A” setting yields sharp throttle response throughout the throttle-opening range to realize maximal power delivery. The “B” setting yields relatively soft throttle response up to the middle of the throttle-opening range. The “C” setting yields relatively soft throttle response throughout the throttle-opening range by reducing engine power.

Suzuki Drive Mode Selector (S-DMS): The unique S-DMS system allows the rider to select from three fuel-injection and ignition-system maps, thereby adjusting power delivery to suit personal preferences.

For the racetrack and the road: It’s a machine that can accommodate riders of different levels. Twist the grip and the bike accelerates, apply the brakes and it decelerates— these are basic functions that you’d expect with any bike, but bikes that

A button on the left handlebar control module lets the rider instantly switch 90

let you perform these basics with this high level of confidence are few and far between. It’s a joy to ride racetrack and street. That is the great advantage of the GSX-R.

MODE DRIVES

Maserati Quattroporte GTS On all levels, the Quattroporte is an impressive car, but in terms of design it is absolutely outstanding. Although generous in size, it retains a streamlined, balanced and dynamic appearance. The starting point of this unmistakable masterpiece is the traditional Maserati oval grille, which leads on to the majestic bonnet and the new front light assemblies with LED daytime running lights.

As tradition dictates, on the most powerful GTS version, the signature Trident badge stands out on the grille as it is highlighted with red accents. The headlamps merge seamlessly into the line of the car’s sides, which start from the familiar three air vents behind the front wheels and continue in a sequence of muscular curves to the rear light clusters. The triangular C-pillar is another obvious link to tradition and an uncompromising expression of the model’s innate sporting character. In addition, the three streamlined windows with frameless doors give the car the look of a sleek coupé. The parking lights provide a border for the wraparound rear lights: consisting only of LEDs, these integrate perfectly with the design of the rear bumpers. Another sporty touch

that is rare in a car of this class is the integral boot spoiler, which generates downforce at high speeds. The interior features Poltrona Frau® leather, fine wood and hand-crafted contrast stitching that is available on request. The sleek lines of the dashboard, the central tunnel and the doors envelop all on-board in an atmosphere of complete luxury. The Poltrona Frau® leather front seats offer outstanding comfort and provide excellent lateral support when cornering enthusiastically. In addition, the all-electric adjustment ensures that the perfect driving position is easy to achieve in terms of height, reach and seatback angle along with four different lumbar settings. Then for the ultimate in driving comfort, there is the option 93

of electrically adjustable pedals which standard on the GTS model. Particular attention has been focused on the occupants of the rear seats. The standard version comes with a comfortable rear bench seat for three people, complete with a central armrest. Alternatively, as an option, the car can be specified with two ventilated, electrically adjustable single seats for total relaxation on long journeys. The dashboard features a broad central band across the entire width of the car to enhance the impression of spaciousness. The intuitive controls are subtly positioned so as not to detract from the overall design of the interior, the tactile surfaces, and the high quality of the materials used.

MODE DRIVES THE MASERATI QUATTROPORTE GTS

The middle of the dashboard is dominated by the large 8.4” Maserati Touch Control screen, whilst a cluster of buttons on the central tunnel operates the driver’s main controls. The ergonomic threespoke, leather-clad steering-wheel features the optional brushed aluminium gearshift paddles. Behind this is a simple but striking instrument panel. Created in partnership with hi-fi specialists, Bowers & Wilkins, the Quattroporte’s optional Premium Surround System raises the levels of audio performance to new heights, thanks to the company’s pioneering technologies and use of innovative materials. With 15 speakers located across the dashboard, doors and rear parcel shelf, the system has a 1,280 Watt amplifier and sets

new standards in terms of in-car entertainment. Intensive studies on the sound source layout and the configuration of the Quantum Logic® Surround system deliver degrees of acoustic realism never previously experienced inside a car. EXCELLENCE ON THE ROAD The new Maserati Quattroporte range comprises the high performance 530bhp Quattroporte GTS, the versatile 410bhp Quattroporte S (also available with Q4 four-wheel drive) and the Quattroporte Diesel. Here the soul of the luxury saloon and the pedigree of the classic grand tourer are balanced in perfect harmony, creating a truly unique and exclusive car.

MASERATI QUATTROPORTE GTS An inspirational bolt of lightning. The essence of Maserati can be summed up in one single name: Quattroporte, along with three accompanying letters: GTS. This, the most powerful Quattroporte in the range and the company’s flagship, is the perfect synthesis of luxury and performance. It is a car that, in just a few seconds, can transform itself from an exclusive, luxury limousine into a thrilling sports saloon with a top speed of 190 mph – a lightning fast metamorphosis that can be guaranteed to inspire whoever is at the wheel. Underneath the bonnet, Maserati’s innovative 3.8 litre twin turbo V8 engine conducts a symphony of sound and exhilaration.

Using the classic 90°V configuration, Maserati Powertrain’s engineers have built a formidable new engine capable of producing 530bhp at 6,800 rpm and 650 Nm of torque between 2,000 and 4,000 rpm. However, with the Sport mode overboost function, peak torque can be increased to 710 Nm between 2,250 and 3,500 rpm. These amazing figures enable the car to surge from 0 to 62 mph in just 4.7 seconds and achieve a top speed of 190 mph. With 95% of torque available at less than 1,600 rpm, the new Quattroporte’s V8 combines smooth running and outstanding performance with comparatively low fuel consumption and CO2

emissions. The use of parallel mounted, lowinertia, twin-scroll turbines helps prevent turbo lag and ensures swifter accelerator reaction and better responsiveness across the board. Verdict: This is a big car that is smooth to drive. Effortless acceleration and the luxurious interior deliver maximum driving comfort. Activate the sports mode and this huge car is nimble and aggressive, delivering all the excitement you would wish for. This car has class. The facts: Model tested

MERCEDES GLA GLA 220 CDI AMG Exclusive Line

One of the latest to join a new line of Mercedes, the GLA is a compact SUV with great styling both inside and out. Mercedes have applied their premium touch to the small SUV market and it works.

It is safe to say that the majority of new Mercedes driving off the forecourts today are turning a few heads. The styling that has been applied over the past 18 months to the new ranges is really allowing the brand to shine through. The new aesthetics were evident in the GLA we test drove for a weekend when we sought to find out how this premium compact SUV fits within the range. The GLA is based on the A-Class chassis and running gear but with more rugged styling and added practicality such as a wider boot opening and fold flat rear seats. One thing we found useful was the automatic boot close button on the key fob and on the boot itself, amusing at first but practical once you stop showing off. Inside I was greeted with all the luxurious quality materials you expect to find in a Mercedes such as

soft flat bottomed leather steering wheel as part of the AMG Exclusive package, plus half Artico leather half Dinamica microfiber seats which are the best combination in my opinion as they look superb but on a HOT summers day (in the UK?) they won’t be uncomfortable.

with the PARKTRONIC system that will find a suitable space and once selected it will steer the car into the space whilst you control the brake and accelerator. The system works best with parallel parking spaces and uses the other cars rather than the painted lines to define the space.

The driving position took a little getting used to as the back window seemed small on first impression but after about an hour of driving it wasn’t a problem with overall good visibility, which is why I would recommend test driving any new car for at least 30 minutes, you can never really get a sense of the car until you get settled driving it. Sat in the driving seat you cannot see the front of the car which didn’t matter as the GLA has 12 ultrasonic sensors to avoid denting the fluid exterior lines, this model also had the rear parking camera along

A handy feature which I would highly recommend is the Traffic Sign Assist which has a front mounted camera that identifies speed limit signs and displays them on the drivers screen, another driver aid I found useful was the COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST where a flush front mounted radar constantly measures the distance between you and the car ahead, if the gap is not large enough to brake safely it displays a warning on the drivers screen effectively discouraging tailgating.

MODE Drives: Mercedes GLA

Dark unlit roads and clear motorways are the norm during the winter but with the Intelligent Light System fiddling with the high beam controls is no longer a concern, the system automatically deploys the high beam on unlit roads when there are no cars in front and is very fast and changing when there is. It also changes the distance of light when on motorways so you can see a further ahead. The light direction also changes based on the steering wheel angle effectively lighting the area you are going rather than always straight ahead I had the car for three days and each day I enjoyed it more and more and saw how practical it was, not in the sense that the load space is huge, it isn’t, but I am not the type of person that regularly moves a wardrobe. Instead the car is the good size for day to day and the occasional shopping trip. On the road the AMG handling was very apparent, it held itself on the road well with direct steering at

low speeds. Over 20mph this car is great to drive however one point I would note is the ride at low speed, because of the firm suspension and low profile tyres it uncomfortably crashes over bumps and potholes, something I would say may not be the case in the less sporty models. The performance of the 2.2 CDI engine in this car is no slouch however it delivers the power gradually unlike, for example the lairy Audi RS6 we had previously and feels refined as a Mercedes should, the only downside of the diesel is that it is noisy when accelerating aggressively, something that you would expect to sound better with the AMG badge. In the automatic version we had there are three driving modes, Eco, Manual and Sport, unlike some of the higher end cars with sports mode changing the characteristics of the engine and suspension the only changes in the GLA are made to the gearbox which extracts more from the engine by increasing the time between gear changes.

Overall I enjoyed driving the GLA and feel it deserves a place within the range with added practicality over the A-Class but better styling and proportions over the more family orientated B-Class. This car looks great on the road and inside as you would expect and is just a great place to be.
