The Ivy Reopens #HMBalmaination You may have heard the news and we apologise if bringing it up again causes you to lose your cool, but the high street retailer H&M has announced an autumn collaboration with Parisian designer label Balmain. (#FreakOUT!) Launching 5th November in around 250 stores worldwide and online, the collection will feature clothing and accessories for women and men. Creative Director Olivier Rousteing says, ‘I want to talk to my generation: this is my main aim as a designer. H&M allows me the unique possibility of bringing everyone into the world of Balmain, get a piece of the dream and create a global #HMBalmaination: a movement of togetherness, fuelled on a hashtag. The collaboration felt extremely natural to me: H&M is a brand that everybody connects to. It calls for unity, and I am all for it.’

The last five months may have been some of the hardest with the closure of one of London’s most famous dining establishments. You’ve spent the time searching for somewhere else to fill void but nothing has quite matched up. Well worry not, because The Ivy is back and more fabulous than ever. After auctioning off most of the contents of the restaurant ( including the tip tray) which saw them raise in excess of £1 million for Child Bereavement UK, the venue has undergone an extensive -refurbishment with new curved banquettes, four-seat booths and corner tables for intimate late night dining. But don’t panic, the features for which it is known and loved remain, including the wood panelling and harlequin stained glass. So waste no more time, it’s time to dine. The Ivy Restaurant will re-open on Monday, 1 June 2015. To make a reservation please contact the team on 020 7836 4751.

Balmain X H&M will be available online and in stores worldwide 5th November.

Sotheby’s to sell Degas’s Little Dancer Aged Fourteen

Shoes: Pleasure & Pain at the V&A You think you have a lot of shoes? The V&A’s shoe collection is unrivalled, spanning the globe and over 2000 years. For Shoes: Pleasure and Pain, curator Helen Persson has delved into this, other international collections and the wardrobes of private individuals to select an exceptional range of shoes, from a sandal decorated in pure gold leaf originating from ancient Egypt to futuristic looking shoes created using 3D printing. The transformative power of extreme footwear is explored in the V&A’s summer 2015 fashion exhibition, Shoes:

Pleasure and Pain. More than 250 pairs of historic and contemporary shoes from around the world are on display, many for the first time. The exhibition explores the agonising aspect of wearing shoes as well as the euphoria and obsession they can inspire. Shoes: Pleasure and Pain;Sponsored by Clarks & Supported by Agent Provocateur with additional thanks to the Worshipful Company of Cordwainers; 13 June 2015 – 31 January 2016 vam.ac.uk/shoes #vamShoes 13

When the 14-year-old dancer, Marie van Goethem, posed for the Impressionist artist Edgar Degas in the late 20th century, one wonders if either artist or muse could possibly have anticipated the controversy the resulting wax model would cause. Or the enormous fame (or prices at auction) the subsequent bronze sculpture would garner. Set to appear at Sotheby’s forthcoming Impressionist & Modern Art Evening Sale in London on 24th June it’s expected to fetch between £10-15 million, partly because there are only a handful of the bronze casts that remain in private hands. The last time one of the bronze repetitions appeared at auction was 2009, when it sold at Sotheby’s London for £13,257,250

Have you made it your goal to get up the speed to progress to the fast lane for your morning swim session, or is the old dear in her floral cap gaining on you? Before diving in, do some pre-swim squats. A study has found that doing four reps of high load squat exercises not only increases your dive distance but also your kicking power, improving overall speed over 15 meters. The science? Simply, squatting helps to activate and engage more muscles. Try doing some scissoring lunge jumps or squat jumps before your next swim and you’ll be making waves.

Sienna Miller’s neutral-toned makeup and plaited hairstyle as seen at the Ice & Sky premier, is perfect for those looking for a natural, youthful and summer suitable beauty look.

Beauty at Cannes There are too many reasons to list why we love the Cannes Film Festival, but if we were to write a list, we’re confident beauty would be right up there at the top. We’re also confident that the beauty looks rocked by the stars on the Med set red carpet are the looks we will all be sporting this summer, so here are some of our favourites.

Georgina Chapman

Sienna Miller

There’s something supremely glamorous about a sweeping side parting. Pair it with carefully contoured makeup and a striking red lip for a bold beauty look as seen on Karlie Kloss at the Youth premier.

Faux Glow Has your post holiday glow faded faster than the memory of lounging poolside, sipping complimentary mojito’s? Pressed in the shape of a delicate camelia flower, Chanel’s new illuminating powder is as beautiful as it is functional. Simply sweep the powder across your cheekbones, nose and forehead for a subtle golden shimmer and faux post-holiday glow. Chanel Creation Exclusive Lumiere d’Ete, £40.50 available in store

Choose a sleek side parting and let your eyes be the focus with an extended metallic smoky look and rose tinted lips a la Georgina Chapman at the Ice & Sky premier.

Karlie Kloss

Zoe Kravitz

Make like Zoe Kravitz at the Mad Max: Fury Road premier and embrace metallic’s this summer. Bronzed smoky eyes and illuminated cheekbones, worn with a nude glossy lip is a beauty look to be envied and aspired too.

Top Tip: Did you know strawberries contain exfoliating fruit acids? Harness their beauty giving powers

by taking one strawberry, cutting it in half (lengthways) and sweeping it across your face. Massage the juice in for two minutes before rinsing. Et voila, super fruity summer skin!

Big Hair Don’t Care “Flat hair is so in this season”, said no one, EVER. Thankfully the very clever people at Aveda have created new Thickening Tonic that promises to plump up your locks with just one spritz! Formulated with the Indian herb Amla, to thicken individual strands of hair, and wheat protein, to protect against heat damage, you’re just one just spray away from the best hair of your life. Aveda Thickening Tonic, £19, aveda.co.uk

A LL IN ONE PL ACE Chanel – The Spa Experience

They’ve been selling beauty products, from sunscreen to lipstick for many years, but Chanel are stepping into new territory and opening their first spa stocked entirely with their own products and treatments. (Permission to squeal excitedly!) But the really exciting news is where they are planning to open their spa. Chanel has announced the home of their spa will be the iconic Ritz Paris Hotel. Already synonymous with fashion, playing regular host to fashion shoots and shows, the hotel was also home to Coco Chanel herself for three decades and it is reported that the famous Chanel No.5 fragrance is in a bottle inspired by the architecture of the landmark hotel. So far, little has been said about specific offerings and pricing as the hotel undergoes refurbishment, but it is reported that the Ritz’s website will be taking bookings as early as this month! Four Steps to a Radiant You ONE:

TWO:

You are what you eat – if you’ve been living under a rock (or in denial) sugar is bad news. Not just for our waistlines but for our skin. Sugary foods breakdown collagen and elastin over time which means dull looking skin. The best advice would be to cut out the white stuff, but if you can’t kick the habit then make sure you counter the effects by enjoying meals that are packed with essential vitamins and minerals. Foods rich in antioxidants, like blueberries, avocados and wholegrain, protect us from free radical damage to keep our skin looking plump and healthy.

Scrub up – Now how do you expect to glow if your radiance is hidden beneath old dead skin (gross but true)? Make exfoliating a priority and revive dull skin by brushing away any debris in an evening so that your skin can focus on repairing and renewing itself over night. They don’t call it beauty sleep for nothing.

THREE: Stimulate your skin – We all know that moisturising is essential to radiant looking skin but remember its quality not quantity. Look out for moisturisers packed full of nutrients and beauty giving goodness. Ingredients that plump, energise and protect skin are important, and one ingredient that does all three is Vitamin C. Try The Body Shop’s Vitamin C Glow Boosting Moisturiser which is packed with Camu Camu berries that have 60 times the Vitamin C of an orange. £16 www.thebodyshop.co.uk

We love Clarins Gentle Exfoliator Brigthening Toner £25 www.clarins.co.uk 23

FOUR: Give a little extra glow – You’ve followed the steps and you’re positively radiant, but if you’re after a little extra sparkle then brush a little highlighting powder on the highpoints of your face (those being your cheekbones, cupid’s bow and the bridge of your nose). The fine particles will pick up and reflect the light and will enhance your natural glow. Use NARS Highlighting Blush in Albatross for a light-reflecting luminous glow, £23 www.narscosmetics.co.uk

HAIR & BEAUTY

With the sun shining, the temperatures rising and the margarita’s calling, it’s time to defrizz, defluff and get our supermodel on, because summer is finally here and we’re ready to shine. Tone Up Pronto OK so we’ve not exactly got loads of time for a total body transformation before the summer but if you’ve been following our Health Experts advice every issue you should all be super fit by now anyway, right? But for those who have missed a workout or ten, here’s a few last minute bits you can do to tighten and tone up before you don your bikini. Dynamic Pilates – say hello to a flat tummy, sculpted thighs, and awesome arms. Power Plate – for those who don’t have space in an already packed schedule for a pilates class, try and jump on a Power Plate machine a

couple of times a week. Vibration training can target your most hated wobbly bits and help you feel firmer, quickly (just remember this is not an all year round solution to fitness!) Firming Creams – Beauty scientists (our favourite kind of scientists) have answered the prayers of lazy ladies everywhere and come up with a new generation of body firming creams which are using a mix of modern technology and natural know-how to zap fat cells within and improve the skin's complexion on the outside. Omorovicza Firming Body Oil £46 www.omorovicza.co.uk

Dye your lashes Mascara and swimming are not a happy combination. Avoid the issue entirely by having your eyelashes dyed the week before you travel and you won't even need to think about mascara until well after you're back. If you are very fair and find black eyelashes look bizarre on you, ask for a dark brown tint instead. If you're not and want to ramp up the volume, go for blue-black. And whilst we’re on the subject of peepers, don’t forget to pay a little attention to your brows.

Get Pedi Ready The season for open toe shoes is upon us so it’s time to get serious about taking care of your feet. If you’re not the kind of lady who regularly gets her tootsies pampered let the pro’s take care of this one first and then once they’ve done the hard work you can maintain easily at home. Oh and by professional we mean, trained pedicurist and not Doctor Fish. If you’re headed away for a long stint be sure to ask for a gellish pedicure – it applies like a normal polish but uses UV light to set it and can last for up to 21 days, because chipped toe polish is not an option.

Eye Brow Shaping – Having your brows shaped before you go may sound like an unnecessary faff but we promise it’s worth it. On holiday you tend to wear less make up so it’s important to make the most of and enhance your natural beauty and everyone knows’ fierce brow game equals fierce beauty. Visit Shavata (studios nationwide) and enjoy an Eyebrow Shape from £17 www.shavata.co.uk 24

Tackle Body Hair No one wants to have to shave everyday when on holiday, afterall, shaving is up there with washing the dishes when it comes to tiresome chores. If you’ve got a late summer vacay planned then you might have time to squeeze in a few sessions of laser hair removal, but if you do plan on this then have your last session a few weeks before your hols because the treatment increases skin sensitivity to sunlight.

Scrub Up Lizard skin never looked good on anyone so take time to exfoliate. We encourage year round scrubbing sessions, twice weekly. Incorporate the ritual of exfoliating into your usual bath time routine so it becomes habit. Body polishing done, slather on a moisturiser for silky smooth skin. Body brush – dry skin body brushing increases circulation and helps soften hard fat deposits below the skin while helping to distribute fat deposits more evenly and therefore reducing the appearance of cellulite. It also helps shed dead skin cells which therefore encourages cell renewal; meaning brighter, smoother skin.

Liz Earle Natural Bristle Body Brush £8.50 uk.lizearle.com

Waxing – great for those who want long lasting results. Unlike shaving and depilatory creams which removes hair at the surface, waxing removes hair at the root. We recommend seeing a professional, to ensure you stay fuzz free for as long as possible.

Exfoliate – Like body brushing, exfoliating helps to get rid of dead skin cells and encourage cell renewal but unlike dry body brushing, exfoliating offers an opportunity to treat skin with additional vitamins and nutrients that can be found in various scrubs. Choose a deeply indulgent scrub enriched in vitamin c that helps to brighten lacklustre skin. Also anything containing honey is great for inhibiting the growth of bacteria and locking in moisture.

Holiday Maintenance - To keep on top of things pack a Wilkinson Sword Quattro for Women Bikini razor. It has a razor at one end and an electric trimmer at the other. Wilkinson Sword Quattro for Women Bikini razor £8.99 boots.co.uk

GROOMING

Get Groomed HELPING YOU STAY ON TOP OF YOUR GROOMING GAME.

Barber Shop Boo Boos Your barber holds a lot of power in his hands. Specifically, the power to make you look great or a hot mess, so show them a little respect and avoid committing hairy faux pas: 1. Showing them photos of guys with hair that is wildly different to your own, in length, density and texture and then demanding they give you their “do”.

4. Looking at the side of your head in the mirror after EVERY snip.

2. Saying things like “I want it short... but not too short.”

6. Ruining all their magnificent artistry by standing up and putting on a hat.

5. Moving your head, a lot. If the cut is wonky, you only have yourself to blame.

3. Then waiting right till the end of the cut to tell them that actually you do want it shorter.

Start your day the Hermés Way

Too Good Looking to get a Job Ever found yourself lamenting about how hard it is to go through life when you’re as good looking as you are, and no one ever understanding or believing your struggle? Well it turns out that whilst you may sound a little obnoxious, you actually could be telling the truth. A new study by the University of Maryland found that physically attractive men face difficulty getting jobs. Whilst it has previously been found that “pretty people make more money” and are often perceived to be more competent, this most recent study revealed that bosses in professions like sales actually view the most-handsome potential employees as threats and don't hire them.

If there is one thing that Hermés is good at, it’s turning a seemingly ordinary and everyday item into a wildly luxurious treat. Take for example their recent foray into bath and shower products. Using the scents in its existing Les Jardins and Les Colognes lines, there are shower gels for body and hair, hand washes and soaps and even hydrating body moisturisers on offer - all in the label’s trademark minimal packaging with the logo front and centre. For gents may we recommend the Les Colognes line, the Eau de Mandarine Ambrée is citrusy and bitter while the Eau de Narcisse Bleu is fresh and clean and perfect for the morning. A word to the wise though, if you’ve got guests, we suggest you don’t leave any of these products out. People will steal them. Body and hair shampoo, £28 for 200ml. Foaming hand and body gel, £39 for 300 ml. Moisturising balm, £49 for 200 ml. Three soap set, £48. Available to buy now in store and online at uk.hermes.com

One of the special journeys available involves having a world class chef as host on board to cook lunch or dinner and I joined the Northern Belle at York for the James Martin Sunday lunch experience. At first the price tag for this particular journey seems steep, that is until the moment you step onto the platform ready to board the train. Red carpets are laid and uniformed staff are here to greet and guide us smoothly to our seats. The train itself is a wonderful step back to a bygone era of elegance and opulence. The interior is beautiful decorated wooden clad carriages with and fine soft furnishings surrounding perfectly laid tables ready for the silver service which is about to commence. James Martin is walking the carriages casually chatting to guests and as he stops to admire our front cover featuring him talks about the best way to charter private jets, the Mille Miglia and why he loves Yorkshire. We are handed a personalised menu as we gracefully roll out of the station. As the dramatic Yorkshire countryside begins to fill the windows, we settle in for the four hour journey and champagne begins to flow almost immediately. It continues to flow even past the first course of a stunning cauliflower soup with curried vanilla oil served in a china cup with a Carpaccio of beef croûton on the side. Next up is a deliciously delicate lemon sole with dressed local crab and green ketchup which prompted a fresh glass along with an excellent Sancerre ‘Silex’ accompaniment. Being a proud Yorkshireman serving Sunday lunch in Yorkshire, we were of course served roast beef and Yorkshire pudding James Martin style. It has to be said with between the rare beef, perfect Yorkshires and crisp beef dripping roast potatoes, I can’t think of a better Sunday lunch I have ever eaten with the flavour packed into the gravy simply epic!

The courses that followed continued to wow and the atmosphere heightened with the addition of music from the strolling musicians. A fresh take on a cheese course in the form of grilled Sussex Charmer followed, and of course served with a fine vintage port Dessert again played homage to Yorkshire with roasted rhubarb atop a vanilla and vodka panna cotta and zingy ginger puree to die for. All in all, an unforgettable experience and one which I’d gladly, in the end have paid double for. For more information or to book www.Belmond.com/NorthernBelle

Lucky Winners The lovely people at Ski Olympic ran a competition earlier this year and recently drew the winner, here is what they had to say: “My husband Jason & I like to spend most of our holidays in the mountains, most often in France, come summer & winter. So we're delighted to have won a skiing holiday with Ski Olympic, a company we've been on holiday with many times over the last 15 years. Jason learnt to ski at a very young age, so when we got together in our early 20s I was introduced to the sport. After a few years of trying to keep up with him on the slopes, I found my ski legs & love it too. Twenty years later & we've found no better way of spending a holiday than hurtling around mountains in the fresh air, enjoying good food & beautiful views. We'd just got back from a week of cycling in France when we learnt we'd woncan't wait for next winter!” Donna & Jason Clayton

Founded in 1986, taking guests to just two chalets in the charming French resort of La Rosiere, Ski Olympic has grown every year and today offers guest a choice of twenty four chalets and chalethotels in the eight top high altitude resorts in the French Alps. Operating their own chalets, training their own staff and chartering their own flights, Ski Olympic take full control to ensure you have the holiday you’ve been dreaming of, you’re only regret will have been not booking with them sooner. Not satisfied with already receiving rave reviews for their usual high standard of service, Ski Olympic have gone the extra mile and created an even higher class of service at Chalet Parc Alpin in Meribel and Chalet Monique in Courchevel, reserved for those clients who desire an extra level of pampering and even closer attention to detail.

Chalet Parc Alpin has a fantastic indoor pool and sauna and an extremely high standard of decor and comfort throughout which, in our opinion, gives a feeling of real luxury, not to mention is guaranteed to impress any guests you might invite to join you. While Chalet Monique has a brilliant outdoor hot tub, perfect for those who like to let off a little steam after a hard day on the slopes. It boasts a fantastic location close to the heart of Courchevel 1650, and exudes a level of quality and comfort that persuades many guests to return year after year. But we’ll let you in on a little secret, while the accommodation itself is entirely impressive, we think the Gold Collection’s popularity might

37

also have something to do with the added extras guests can enjoy, such as a free unlimited hosted bar service between 4:30pm and 9:30pm, where an afternoon Gin & Tonic or a post dinner Whiskey can be enjoyed on the house and the fact that you can sit down to a four course dinner without even having lifted a finger. Unsurprisingly, both chalets and their Gold service have proven to be tremendously popular with their clients; the offering combines all the advantages of great locations in the popular resorts of Meribel and Courchevel, fantastic accommodation and private leisure facilities, luxury level service and a realistic pricing policy, meaning that you can afford to book again and again. For the frequent flyer You’ve put your days of flying by puddle jumper behind you and instead prefer to fly in a jet that offers more in the way of comfort and a lot more in the way of space, but you don’t want to appear flashy because, let’s face it you’ve got enough friends and don’t want to attract too much attention. The 900XP, true to Hawker style

has evolved in all areas, much like your taste in private jets and offers improved; aerodynamics, comfort, fuel efficiency and general performance capability. With a very impressive 604 cubic ft. cabin, the 900 is the most spacious in its class and features stand-up headroom, touch screen seat controls, fully berthable seating for up to 44

eight passengers and an ultra-quiet cabin, thus making it an unrivalled combination of luxury and performance. It can also cover almost double the distance of the Citation CJ4 without needing to refuel.

Your first jet The entry level of jets is the Citation CJ4. It's about $8.7 million and seats 10 passengers max. This is the private-jet equivalent of when you buy your first car. You're just so excited to have your first ride, you don't' even care if it only has three wheels. Don’t expect lots of space or standing room for that matter. It looks like a puddle jumper inside and out. It’s small but it is still a private jet and that’s got to count for something, we’ve all got to start somewhere. One thing worth noting, you’re not flying anywhere long haul nonstop. More suited to shorter journeys it only has a range of 2002 nm which works out at around 3700km. Of course the plus side to making a pit stop is you can grab some snacks on your way...

The party plane If you’re looking for a jet that quite simply says “I have arrived” then the Boeing Business Jet, or BBJ as it is known, is the flyer for you. A commercial plane of this size seats 149 people, but as a private jet, it seats 23 partygoers. There are lounge spaces, bedrooms — it's like a gentlemen's club with wings. In fact they are fully customisable so if you’re in the market to buy then you can have whatever you like but for those just looking to charter one will find most configurations divide the cabin into four compartments. The four compartments generally consist of a board room, a lounge, a VIP bedroom, a business office, and two lavatories with showers. Superb flight range and cruise speeds together with an extremely spacious and versatile cabin make the BBJ the most prestigious private jet on the charter market. It’s basically a luxury apartment in the sky. Interested? Then you can expect to pay in the region of £15,000 per hour. Happy flying.

For when only the BEST will do The Gulfstream 650 is, inarguably, the ultimate in private jets. You've grown tired of the part plane that is the BBJ and now you’re just focused getting you and your essential crew where you need to go farther and faster — and in luxurious comfort. If you’re buying then one of these will set you back about $65 million. So with a price tag as hefty as that you can expect only the best. The seats are better than any plane you've ever been on. The countertops in the full kitchen are better. Even the AIR is better because the engines are designed so cabin pressure is at a higher level which makes flying less tiring and more comfortable. It offers 12 different floor plans for owners. It even has Wi-Fi and an in flight Cabin Management System (GCMS) which synchronizes with Apple iOS or select Google Android smartphones and tablets to provide touchscreen control for temperature, lighting, window shades and entertainment options so you are fully in control of everything. Oprah Winfrey and Ralph Lauren ordered theirs in 2013 and can expect delivery in 2017, so you might want to put your name down now... Now you’re practically a private jet expert, make sure you know how to behave on board. Read on for an insider’s guide on how to act in the air... 45

TRAVEL

One for the Road Some people travel for cultural experience, some chase the sun. Some go in search of themselves and others, well others travel for good food and even better drinks! It’s for those people that we have created this guide to the best bars from around the world.

The Connaught, London, United Kingdom For all out decadence and a superior choice of classic cocktails, champagnes and cognacs, head to The Connaught. This historic Mayfair hotel hosts one of the most celebrated bars, and was once the residence of President Charles de Gaulle. It’s majestic, over 100 years old and has a top notch butler service; we love the smoky mirrors, Cubistpattern walls and the secret passageway leading straight onto Mount Street.

New York Bar, Park Hyatt, Tokyo Film buffs may recognise this one, with its dramatic glass backdrop and mood lighting, as featured in Sofia Coppella’s Lost in Translation. You’ll also be happy to hear that it’s a classy and spectacular in real life as it is in the movies, although we can’t promise you’ll bump into Scarlett Johansson. Aside from its cinematic credentials, and awe inspiring views, guests visit for the jazz which plays live every night, seven days a week. www.tokyo.park.hyatt.com

Top Mountain Star, Wurmkogl Mountain, Austria Get away from the hustle and bustle of the city and take a trip to this remote mountain top resort. Take in breathtaking views of the snowy abyss, from the viewing platform and the panorama bar and let the only thing to come between you and the natural world be a glass of something special. Available for private hire, this perhaps could be the most spectacular venue for that party you said you were planning... www.obergurgl.com/top-mountain-star-en

Skyline Rooftop Bar, Venice, Italy Imagine panoramic city views. A sleek, modern rooftop bar, serving stunning cocktails and hosting summer pool parties. Now stop imagining it and experience it, and Venice like you’ve never before. The recently refurbished, contemporary bar is a far cry from the surrounding historic buildings that the city is made up of, but it does offer up spectacular views of it! www.skylinebarvenice.com

Niyama, Dhaalu Atoll, Maldives It’s not all about skylines and mountain ranges you know. Take in the world from a different viewpoint as you head underwater to Subsix, an intimate live music venue where you’ll have more luck fish spotting than you will people watching. The stylish submarine style venue attracts world class live acts, including the likes of Tinie Tempah and should definitely be on your must visit list. www. niyama.peraquum.com

Drake Hotel, Toronto, Canada

Rock Bar, Bali If you’re looking for uninterrupted views over the Indian Ocean, then it doesn’t get much better than the stunning Rock Bar at the Ayana Resort and Spa. This world class bar takes ‘on the rocks’ to a whole new level. Sitting just 14 meters above the crashing waves, it’s dramatic and unsurprisingly, one of the hottest tickets on the island.

Known as hotbed for culture, the Drake is famous for its live acts, fashion shows, cook-offs and original artwork. Head down to the Underground for indie shows, DJ dance parties, cinema screenings and comedy performances, enjoy a home away from home experience the in the Lounge or take it upstairs to the Sky Yard and stargaze as you sip on a salted caramel flip.

DEPARTURE LOUNGE:

Defacing Ancient Ruins We can’t really say this one is going out of fashion, because let’s face it; it was never in fashion in the first place. It has never been OK to deface historic monuments, ancient ruins, wonders of the world, but that hasn’t stopped some remarkably stupid people from doing so. So far the Roman Colosseum has bore the brunt of this awful trend, but those caught (in this case etching their initials into the ancient site) have been fined severely.

Selfie Sticks Sorry for this one but really, they’re quite annoying and now, illegal. Whilst they may aid you in taking the perfect #selfie, they could land you in a lot of trouble at major tourist sites such as the Pompidou Centre and Louvre in Paris and the MoMA and Met Museum’s in New York who have all banned them.

Poolside

Remember, what you travel in is what you arrive in and when you’re staying at a 5 star resort, first impressions count. Gone are the days when you need to sacrifice style for comfort. Choose fabrics that are likely to remain crease free after a long haul flight and keep you cool should the temperatures rise, but don’t forget to take a warmer layer that’s easy to shed once you land, it might be 30 degrees in the Maldives but you’re not there yet...

You have arrived and if you’re anything like us you’ve left your travelling companions to sort the bags and you’ve taken up your rightful place, poolside. As the sun sets and the party starts, ensure you’re the best dressed guest in the bar, showing off your killer new tan, your exquisite sense of style and your fearless fashion credentials. Don’t be afraid to stand out as you spend the night toasting to the holiday and fashion gods.

Never mind the seven wonders, people will be too busy lusting after your wardrobe to notice anything else. A-Z of Wardrobe Essentials...

I is for Investment Bag This is one purchase you should feel absolutely no guilt about. After all, it’s an investment... Such a bag will never go out of style, will last a lifetime and much like fine wine and George Clooney, will only get better with age. An investment bag is instantly recognisable because it is as relevant today as it was when it first debuted, and just as you tried to steal your mother’s, your daughter will try to do the same and so will hers, and well, you get the picture...

A true investment bag will set you back (on average) a few weeks salary so once you’re in the position to invest, it’s worth noting that there are only a handful of designs that are truly worth your precious and hard earned cash. Once you’ve familiarised yourself with them (if you haven’t already) you’ll begin to recognise that most other handbags are really just variations of the iconic bags that we deem worthy of ‘Investment’ status.

FEATURED DESIGNER

Joy de Rohan Chabot As her classmates were beginning to write their first phrases, Joy de Rohan Chabot could be found drawing, using art as a means of expression where writing failed her. Suffering from a form of dyslexia, where Joy lacked confidence in writing she made up for it in imagination and artistic skill.

64

At just 17 years of age, Joy de Rohan Chabot was admitted to the École des Arts Décoratifs (a renowned French Grand École of Art and Design) with the ambition of turning her passion into her profession. And her passion for the arts and creativity extended beyond the art studio. With green fingers, if it had not been for painting Joy would have liked to become a gardener. Moreover, nature became her principal inspiration. She describes her work as poeticising reality. From her earliest childhood Joy de Rohan Chabot dreamed of imaginary gardens, which thus naturally became a recurrent theme in her collections. An exceptional and multidisciplinary artist, she lets her talent find expression using a very wide range of materials including iron, wood, glass and aluminium. She carves wood, polishes glass, cuts metal, applies lacquer, paints sheet metal and gilds using gold leaf. Her hands and skilful brushes give birth to original and dream-like pieces, which invite us to discover the highly personal universe that distinguishes her. Through her work, the artist’s intention is to show how simple materials can gain a sophisticated, decorative and timeless identity. Joy de Rohan Chabot is a consummate artist, who forms her vision of her works and does not relinquish until the final stroke of the brush or chisel. She is equally at ease with both technical and decorative work. Today her work is internationally renowned. In 2008, the Musée Jacquemart-André paid tribute to her and, a year later, on the occasion of the official Year of France in Brazil, Joy de Rohan Chabot was the guest artist of Jorge Elias, who exhibited a large number of her works in his gallery in the heart of São Paulo. www.joyderohanchabot.com

The Wensleydale Heifer This picturesque restaurant is breaking the mould and we couldn’t be happier 5IF 8FOTMFZEBMF )FJGFS .BJO 4USFFU 8FTU 8JUUPO -FZCVSO :PSLTIJSF %- -4 t XXX XFOTMFZEBMFIFJGFS DP VL t 3FWJFXFE CZ $PSBM ,FFST

Celebrations are planned for the Wensleydale Heifer’s tenth anniversary year so we decided to go take a look at why this award winning Yorkshire foodie haunt has been getting it right for a decade. After a drive through the most beautiful countryside, reaching the remote village of West Whitton is equally rewarding as the bright white traditional coaching inn set against the green makes for the perfect picture postcard scene. The Wensleydale Heifer is far from traditional though as it strives to break the mould in every way whilst delivering a solid service and excellent memories for all who enter. After all its Fish Bar and Grill Room are award winning in their own right and as for the accommodation; let’s just say they’re struggling for ‘award hanging’ wall space! Upon meeting chef/patron David Moss it’s

immediately evident that his utter devotion to ‘all things food’ will show through on the plate and although we’ve just arrived I’m already sure all that I’ve heard about the Heifer will be all that and more. In fact the whole point of the Wensleydale Heifer David admits, is to give every guest a completely indulgent experience every time. David strives for innovation on his menu, which has always a choice of at least 10 lobster dishes including the controversial maple roast lobster and bacon salad (which I ended up choosing for dinner.) Only the best ingredients are used and wherever possible, made on site like their breakfast jam or handmade chocolates we’re to find later in the room. David explains “if we can do it better, we do. But if we find someone who does it better than we do, we let them. Take the artisan bread you’ll have at dinner, it’s from a great local baker, so why bake our own? I couldn’t agree more. He adds, “We like to find good things locally. I found that R & J’s herd of Limousin and Charolais cattle at Waterford Park produced the most 76

fabulous beef, so I added a whole steak section to the menu. The place is decorated with memorabilia of sorts. Things people can relate too and by contrast talk about. Take the huge hexagonal coffee table which doubles as a fish tank. It’s certainly interesting. Even the loos have a quirky feel with walls covered in comical, on the edge of naughty seaside postcards; again a real talking point. We are shown to our room which is in a separate new build barn conversion and a walk through a small courtyard which looks out onto ‘those’ views. Stunning. Add to the fact all the furniture is replaced every Summer “Just to keep it fresh David states with a smile. All the rooms are themed here, ours the ‘Chocolate Heaven’ room suits me perfectly as we are shown where some of the secret chocolate hiding places are and left to search out the rest. The bedside drawer is full, bowls of treats everywhere and a platter of handmade delights. It’s not just the chocolate that’s heaven as I take in the dark chocolate soft furnishing and faux fur curtains

against the cream furniture and a huge bathroom. Further inspection of the latter reveals a step up, sunken bath with a skylight above for stargazing. There’s a Michelangelo-esque mural painted around the bath with playful cherubs holding bars of chocolate and a magnum Lauren-Perrier Pink in a glass display case. We dress for dinner although it’s fairly relaxed and are shown to our table. The passion for excellent service is obvious here too. I feel I’m going to have a good time simply because they wish me to so openly. The sommelier is very knowledgeable and even though I order by the glass takes pride in explaining the origin of my choice and what I can expect on the nose. Nice touch. The menu is luxurious and indulgent with choice enough for whatever you’re into. It’s well worth a read, so allow some time for getting through it. But remember, here it’s all about you. If you see something you want to change or even fancy something that’s not on the menu, worry ye not, it shall be created. There’s even a local who has fresh French onion soup when he comes for dinner. It’s not on the menu but the team ensure they have the ingredients in for just in case. Of course fish features heavily but as well as the traditional choices found on a menu like this; oysters, scallops and salmon but the spotlight really is on lobster. Steak is another albeit recent addition of key ingredients cooked in a variety of palate pleasing ways.

What we ate:

The starter is a real event with a table width platter of morsels strewn artfully along the full length. There’s tiger prawn pakora with raita and crispy coconut, beer battered scallops with tarter mayonnaise and even hot and crunchy oysters. Its impressive looking and the taste certainly matches.

STARTERS House Speciality Platter for Two

The steak Rosini was absolutely amazing and in the words of David it really does feel so indulgent that “you almost believe when you put done your knife and fork, getting into your Bentley and driving to your yacht” We’ll second that. I also have to report that the lobster salad really was controversial; in the fact it was so unusual and yet perfectly put together making an utter taste explosion!

MAINS Maple Roast Canadian Lobster Salad with King Scallops, Tiger Prawns, Crispy Belly Pork & Smoked Bacon Steak Rosini Served with Celeriac & Truffle Puree with Fat Chips and (trust us) ALL the trimmings

Throughout the meal we continued to feel progressively full each of which met with “we aim to please” and “we love to fatten you up, why do you think we are called the Wensleydale Heifer!”

DESSERT

The whole philosophy here is playful and engaging. There’s a cow sized cow in the courtyard and the owner’s car ‘Moo-stang Sally’ is a cow patterned beetle! You have to go to get it, but you will, I assure you. There’s a fanatical following be it their social media fans and since I posted a pic I’ve since had four people tell me they visited just because it looked so good. I’ll be going back again for sure.

The Arch London

A Night at The Arch London A gorgeous upscale boutique hotel and restaurant in the heart of London 5IF "SDI -POEPO (SFBU $VNCFSMBOE 1MBDF .BSCMF "SDI -POEPO 8 ) '% t XXX UIFBSDIMPOEPO DPN t 3FWJFXFE CZ 4PQIJB ,JOH JUNiper 586 Suite - ÂŁ588 per night, based on two people sharing (breakfast not included)

Set across seven Victorian townhouses dating back to the 18th century, The Arch is an upscale family owned boutique hotel, right in the heart of London. Filled with contemporary art and well placed for Oxford Street and Hyde Park, it’s a favourite amongst business and leisure travellers alike. Be it for work or romance, sightseeing or shopping, The Arch caters for everyone and will have you planning your return before you’ve even checked out... On first arriving at this grand Georgian residence I had already drawn a couple of positive conclusions. Firstly, it looked magnificent. An amalgamation of several Grade II listed townhouses, the impressive brick facade and striking sash windows set the standard for our stay very high indeed. Secondly, its proximity to absolutely everything a traveller like me could possibly need. Set in a quiet enclave, Hyde Park is just around the corner (literally) – an amenity I would make use of when

the area, “Leave the hotel and turn left to join every other tourist in London, or turn right to experience real London.

I took my daily run, and as Michael the manager would inform me, so were a whole host of shops (and I’m not just talking about Oxford Street, but a treasure trove of independent, upscale Marylebone retailers).

One thing that I will say now because, as soon as you enter this impressive hotel you will notice it too, is the array of contemporary artwork on display. The Arch is almost worthy of gallery status with original pieces adorning almost every wall, including work by the award winning illustrator, Sara Fanelli and hand-painted wall paper in the rooms. Do take time

We were greeted warmly and couldn’t help but notice the upbeat and polite manner of all the staff. We were checked in swiftly, relieved of our luggage and treated to complimentary refreshments while the manager Michael gave us the ‘insiders guide’ to enjoying 79

to explore the hotel and enjoy the designer touches and work by new and emerging artists. The Martini Lounge, with is snug armchairs, plush furnishings and book laden walls is particularly enjoyable and is the perfect setting for afternoon tea or pre-dinner drinks, and heaven forbid your glass should run dry, just press the ‘Top-Up’ button. Or if you’re celebrating a special occasion and it’s fizz you’re fancying, a trip to Le Salon de Champagne, located upstairs, would be perfectly fitting.

After a tour of the hotel’s facilities, we retired to our suite which was located on the lower ground floor of the hotel and therefore enjoyed a private, heated and enclosed terrace. We stayed in the JUNiper Suite, a 1 bedroom suite with a separate sitting room and study, providing occupiers with ample room should they wish to work or entertain. The room was beautifully furnished, with striking wallpaper and carefully selected furniture. There was great sense of space and it was though every effort had been made to make the room feel like home (albeit a very decadent and luxurious home). Despite being located below ground level the room was still bright and airy as light spilled in from the terrace that enjoyed uninterrupted views of the sky above. I can imagine that the terrace would be a most welcome treat during the summer months, but for those staying when the weather is cooler, there are mounted wall heaters so the outdoor space can still be enjoyed.

looks, the food didn’t disappoint on taste either. The Pan Fried Scallops, served with a chilli jam and mango salsa were perfectly cooked. The fiery chilli jam and sweetness of the mango perfectly complemented the meatiness of the scallops. My partner who had chosen the Oxtail to start (which was served as three near perfect spheres, crumbed and accompanied by a horseradish salad), was impressed by the depth and careful balance of such strong flavours. Off to strong start our expectations for the main event were high. I had chosen the Wild Mushroom and Spinach Tart and my dining partner, the Tuna, one of the evening’s specials. Equally as impressive as the first courses, the main dishes once again were set down in front of us and looked utterly delicious. I do enjoy good presentation, but on occasion I feel that the chef can fall victim to presenting something so overly fussy that the expression “too good to eat” actually poses an issue. However that was not the case at HUNter 486. Whilst the chef clearly had creative skill, each dish looked as though it was supposed to be enjoyed, not just by the eyes but by someone with a healthy appetite for exceptional food. My Wild Mushroom and Spinach Tart, which was topped with a poached egg and hollandaise sauce, was both filling and robust in flavour. The pastry was light and flaked beautifully when I broke it with my fork, while the mushrooms were meaty and strong in both texture and taste. The spinach was creamy and delicious and the poached egg, which was

Such a room as that which we had the pleasure of occupying, comes with many amenities, so I will do my best to feature as many as possible without it sounding like a list. Upon entering the room we were welcomed into our living space, featuring a glorious hot pink chaise, striped sofa and (very) large flatscreen TV. The room also hosted a beautiful working desk, book lined shelves and French doors which opened out on to the terrace. Additional amenities, available in every room at The Arch, included Sky HD, a free DVD library, a Nespresso machine and complimentary soft drinks from

and often overlooked by hotels at breakfast. The range on offer was quite impressive, fresh honeycomb could be enjoyed straight from the hive to be spread on freshly baked bread, while a continental breakfast buffet took pride of place in the centre of the restaurant. For those looking for something a little more substantial, the servers were on hand to take orders for the kitchen and having taken an early run, I decided I’d earned a treat so chose the American style pancakes, served with fresh berries, bacon and maple syrup whilst my partner chose the traditional english fayre.

cooked perfectly with a golden runny yolk, brought additional depth, flavour and richness to the dish. My partner, who had taken the advice of Luca, the restaurant’s manager, and chosen the Tuna special, enjoyed his dish equally. With obvious Asian influence, the tuna steak was served a top a bed of pickled vegetables and green beans and garnished with coriander. The generously portioned tuna was perfectly cooked, melting in the mouth, whilst the ginger chilli sauce was exciting and lifted the dish. Feeling abundantly satisfied with our choices we took some time before dessert to enjoy a cocktail from the bars extensive menu. Feeling quite the princess (and as a lover of sloe gin), I opted for the appropriately named ‘Grace Kelly’, a cocktail of fresh muddled blackberries, Plymouth sloe gin, Crème de Casis, lychee liqueur and lime juice. Expertly crafted and beautifully served, it was the perfect

accompaniment to a delicious evening. And finally dessert, rather than a traditional choice off the menu, our server - Luca, presented to us a large tray of desserts to choose from, with such an abundant range of sweets right in front of us, it was almost impossible to choose (almost being the operative word). Feeling quite full and in need of something delectable but light, I chose the simple double chocolate dipped strawberries whilst my partner opted for an almond and pistachio tart, again on Luca’s recommendation. Though simple in concept the strawberries were the perfect end to what had already been a decadent evening of dining - not too filling but perfectly sweet and a little bit naughty. My partner’s tart was light with a good crunch and a sweetness from the pistachio which certainly left him feeling happy in his selection.

only be brought on my fabulous food. And not that we could have managed another mouthful in that moment, we retired to bed with a silent anticipation for what pleasure the chef might treat us to at breakfast... After an incredible night’s sleep, due in part to the exceptionally comfortable bed and the blackout curtains in the room and partly because we fell in to a food induced coma, I rose early and ventured out to Hyde Park for a run, having collected a helpful map containing different jogging routes of the grounds from reception, before returning to experience breakfast. I call it an experience because that is what it felt like. Once again we were given a booth only this time we were treated to privacy as the waiting staff pulled a large curtain around us. Suddenly, within this bustling restaurant we were treated to a sense of intimacy and quiet, something quite wonderful

Upon finishing we left the restaurant in the kind of good mood that can

Aside from enjoying another great meal, breakfast offered up an opportunity to speak with the hotel’s manager Michael. One thing that was abundantly clear was that he and his staff take great pride in the hotel. Full of passion and enthusiasm, his love of The Arch is infectious and it becomes quite clear why they see so many of their guests returning. Not only is the hotel beautiful, the rooms luxurious and the dining exceptional, it is full of character. From the original artwork and building’s listed status, to the genuine and friendly demeanour of the staff, the hotel is not lacking in atmosphere and five star appeal. Despite it being our first visit to the boutique hotel, felt as though we had been visiting for years and we left with the very aspiration to do so.

Cocktail Hour Nothing says travel like a tropical, fruity rum-based cocktail. Enter the Mai Tai.

2 oz. Aged rum

The classic Mai Tai is an unforgettable cocktail, an icy Jamaican rum and fresh lime juice drink with a subtle hint of oranges and almonds, but while its name may be Polynesian and it’s arguably known as Hawaii’s favourite drink, the cocktail is American in origin. Created not on tropical sands by a lagoon, it was concocted on the mudflats of San Francisco’s East Bay by a legendary California restaurateur, the late Vic Bergeron of Trader Vic’s fame.

ž oz. Lime juice

ž oz. Orange Curacao ½ oz. Orange syrup Shake well with ice and strain into an old fashioned glass filled with ice. Garnish with a vandal orchid, a cherry, or mint and a wedge of lime.

There's been a lot of conversation over the beginning of the Mai Tai. And I want to get the record straight... I originated the Mai Tai. Many others have claimed credit. All this aggravates my ulcer completely. Anyone who says I didn't create this drink is a dirty stinker. Vic Bergeron

What: Working Girl

It’s been a long wait but hasn’t it been worth it?

Electro Pop singer Little Boot’s has announced the release of her latest album titled, Working Girl. The British artist – real name Victoria Hesketh – will release ‘Working Girl’ on July 10 via On Repeat. It follows on from her 2009 debut ‘Hands’, 2013’s ‘Nocturnes’ and last year’s ‘Business Pleasure’ EP.

Muse fans everywhere rejoiced at the announcement of the band’s latest album, Drones, which is a departure from their last release in 2012, The 2nd Law, which featured a more experimental sound for the group. Instead, Drones see’s the band return to the guitar sound that helped establish them as global superstars.

‘Working Girl’ has been produced by Ariel Rechtshaid and features collaborations with Simian Mobile Disco’s Jas Shaw, Com Truise, Grades and Jeppe Laursen. It will feature three tracks (‘Business Pleasure’, ‘Taste It’, ‘Heroine’) from her aforementioned 2014 EP.

Per the press release, Matt Bellamy has said, “To me, ‘Drones’ are metaphorical psychopaths which enable psychopathic behavior with no recourse. The world is run by Drones utilizing Drones to turn us all into Drones. Drones explores the journey of a human, from their abandonment and loss of hope, to their indoctrination by the system to be a human drone, to their eventual defection from their oppressors.”

Madame Butterfly with Perpetuum Mobile Touring 21st May – 26th September 2015

Death of a Salesman

Visit http://northernballet.com/ for full list of locations.

Noël Coward Theatre, St Martin’s Lane, London 9th May – 18th July

Experience Northern Ballet at its dynamic best - through the achingly emotional storytelling of Madame Butterfly and the awe-inspiring strength and skill of Perpetuum Mobile.

In the land of the free, each man is in charge of his own destiny. Willy Loman knows and cherishes this truth. After a life of honest hard work, it’s Willy’s birthright to retire with his loving wife and watch his two athletic, handsome sons continue his legacy.

Northern Ballet’s uniquely expressive dancers will perform two spectacular ballets in one evening.

Yet as old age begins to take hold and retirement beckons, Willy’s dream seems further away than ever. Decades of graft have somehow failed to translate into wealth and his eldest son refuses to follow the path his father has chosen for him. As actions buried in his past re-surface, Willy struggles to reconcile his long cherished dream with the life he has actually lived.

Be transported to Japan as the Company presents its much-loved and heartbreakingly tragic Madame Butterfly. The inspiration for the world famous musical Miss Saigon, the story of Madame Butterfly tells of the doomed love affair between an American Naval Lieutenant and his young Japanese bride, Butterfly. Madly in love and prepared to sacrifice everything, Butterfly’s world falls apart when she is abandoned and betrayed.

Following their performances as Falstaff and Prince Hal in Henry IV Parts I & II(2014/15), Antony Sher and Alex Hassell play Willy Loman and his son Biff. Arthur Miller’s 1949 play, Death of a Salesman is surely the greatest American tragedy ever written. Directed by RSC Artistic Director Gregory Doran, this production celebrates the centenary of Miller’s birth.

Perpetuum Mobile (Perpetual Motion) doesn’t tell a story but does show off the dancers at their athletic best. The incredible strength and prowess of Northern Ballet’s dancers will leave you breathless. This is world-class ballet on your doorstep. Book now and prepare for Europe’s ‘Best Company’ to sweep you away this spring through unrivalled storytelling, dance and live music.

SPORT Royal Ascot

Wimbledon

16th - 20th June 2015

29th June – 12th July 2015

Royal Ascot is Britain’s most valuable race meeting, attracting many of the world’s finest racehorses to compete for more than £5.5milllion in prize money. Anticipated and revered, these five days are made for socialising. Long seen as a spectacle of fashion and style, they are referenced the world over. Each year the meeting is broadcast to audiences around the globe, yet to experience it in person is something altogether more special.

One of the four annual Grand Slam tournaments held around the world, Wimbledon is by far our favourite, and it certainly has something to do with the added strawberries, cream and champagne. It’s the world’s longest-running and most prestigious tennis tournament and games are still played on the original playing surface, grass, oh and there’s a strict white-only dress code for players. We Brit’s know how to do things properly. Now if Andy Murray could just win back the Championship title our summer would be made.

READS It’s All in Your Head: True Stories of Imaginary Illness

More Human: Designing a World Where People Come First

Dr Suzanne Sullivan

Steve Hilton

Most of us accept the way our heart flutters when we set eyes on the one we secretly admire, or the sweat on our brow as we start the presentation we do not want to give. But few of us are fully aware of how dramatic our body’s reactions to emotions can sometimes be. In It’s All in Your Head consultant neurologist Dr Suzanne O’Sullivan takes us on a journey through the very real world of psychosomatic illness. Meeting her patients, she encourages us to look deep inside the human condition. There we find the secrets we are all capable of keeping from ourselves, and our age-old failure to credit the intimate and extraordinary connection between mind and body.

Government, business, the lives we lead, the food we eat, the way our children are brought up, the way we relate to the natural world around us it’s all become too big and distant and industrialised. Steve Hilton, visiting professor at Stanford University and former senior adviser to Prime Minister David Cameron, believes that the frustrations people have with government, politics, their economic circumstances and their daily lives are caused by deep structural problems in the systems that dominate our modern world systems that are broken because they’ve grown too far from the human scale. He shows us how change is possible, offering the latest research, compelling stories and case studies from all over the world across industry, politics, education, design and social action to show us what can happen when we make our world more human. This book is a manifesto and call to action for a more local, more accountable and more human way of living that will make us more productive, more fulfilled and ultimately happier.

Skyfaring: A Journey with a Pilot Mark Vanhoenacker This was the Book of the Week on Radio 4. “One of the most constantly fascinating, but consistently under-appreciated aspects of modern life is the business of flying. Mark Vanhoenacker has written the ideal book on the subject: a description of what it’s like to fly by a commercial pilot who is also a master prose stylist and a deeply sensitive human being. This is a man who is at once a technical expert - he flies 747s across continents - and a poet of the skies. This couldn’t be more highly recommended.” (Alain de Botton). In Skyfaring, airline pilot and flight romantic Mark Vanhoenacker shares his irrepressible love of flying, on a journey from day to night, from new ways of mapmaking and the poetry of physics to the names of winds and the nature of clouds. Here, anew, is the simple wonder that remains at the heart of an experience which modern travellers, armchair and otherwise, all too easily take for granted: the transcendent joy of motion, and the remarkable new perspectives that height and distance bestow on everything we love.

The Sick Bag Song Nick Cave The Sick Bag Song chronicles Nick Cave’s 2014 tour of North America with The Bad Seeds. The account of this 22-city journey began life scribbled on airline sick bags and grew into a restless full length epic, seeking out the roots of inspiration, love and meaning. Nick’s new book incorporates lyrical passages with straight prose and tells the story of a musician in his fifties touring the USA (it’s fictionalised and ‘not a tour diary’ but parallel’s Nick’s own experience closely). It would seem that what happens on tour, doesn’t necessarily stay on tour...

FILM Mr Holmes

London Road

Release Date: 19th June 2015

Release date: 12th June 2015

Starring: Ian McKellen, Colin Starkey, Laura Linney, Hattie Morahan, Hiroyuki Sanada, Roger Allam

Starring: Olivia Colman, Tom Hardy, Kate Fleetwood, Anita Dobson

Sir Ian McKellen takes on the role of the iconic Baker Street detective in this acclaimed drama. It’s 1947 and the world’s most famous detective, Sherlock Holmes, is long retired and living in relative anonymity in Sussex with only his housekeeper Mrs Munro (Laura Linney) and her young son Roger (Milo Parker) for company. Angry due to his former partner Dr John Watson’s mis-representation of him in the series of bestselling novels, his mind turns to his final case, one that has remained frustratingly unsolved in the years since. Reunited with his Gods and Monsters director Bill Condon, Sir Ian McKellen puts in a powerful performance as Arthur Conan Doyle’s famous creation, with ample support from Golden Globe winner Laura Linney, Roger Allam (TV’s The Thick of It), and - in a fanpleasing cameo -Young Sherlock Holmes star Nicholas Rowe.

National Theatre Artistic Director Rufus Norris adapts his acclaimed play for the big screen. The residents of London Road in Ipswich found themselves in the national headlines when, in 2006, five women were found murdered. Theatre director Rufus Norris adapted this true story into a critically praised musical in 2011, with the lyrics taken from recorded interviews and contemporary television news coverage. The play won Best Musical at the 2011 Critics’ Circle Theatre Awards, and this movie version stars Olivia Colman (Broadchurch), Tom Hardy (Mad Max: Fury Road), Kate Fleetwood (Philomena) and Anita Dobson (EastEnders). 88

Two Brit nominations, a #1 platinum selling debut album and four smash hits. (So far).Ella Henderson has proven quite a lot over the last 12 months and now she’s set to embark on her first headline UK tour. We caught up with the UK’s new favourite songstress to talk about the album, artist collaborations and her upcoming debut tour.

MODE MEETS:

The year has already been quite momentous for you and now you’re setting off on your first UK headline tour, can you sum up how it’s felt?

for absolutely every one, but is there anywhere you perhaps haven’t been or somewhere you’ve been and loved and are particularly looking forward to playing?

It’s been very crazy and unexpected I guess. Those are the only words I can use to describe it. I could never have anticipated everything to have happened in the last couple of years that has happened.

Overall I’m just really excited for the whole tour. It’s my very first tour where it’s just me by myself, on my own as the headline act so I just can’t wait to go around with my boys in my live band and put on a show for everyone and actually just let everyone experience the album for what it is.

The record is a huge success, personally I love it and ‘Yours’ is a very special track for me, writing it must have been a joy but also incredibly difficult, is there a particular song for you that resonates or was particularly great to write? For me each song is written from such a different place and in my mind everything I write is from how I feel or where I am at that time, so I guess every so is just so different. Burt I would say though that ‘Yours’ was a song that resonated with me and it was a song I wrote at the very end just before I brought Chapter One out. So it was never even meant to go on the record, I was just writing for fun and it ended up being added on. And how about to perform? Do you have a favourite? I love performing Billie Holiday and Rockets, those two are really great live and always get the crowd going. You recently collaborated with Sigma on ‘Glitterball’, which sounds great. Are there any other artists who you’re really keen to work with? Oh god, the list is endless! I’d love to write with many different artists, but I love Ed Sheeran, I think he’s just incredible and I think if we were to write together we’d write something very different and out of the box, for me especially. You’re playing some fantastic venues in the upcoming tour and I’m sure you’re excited

Some artists have huge tours with pyrotechnics, light shows, huge special effects and some are stripped right back with nothing between the audience and the performer. What can audiences expect from your tour? I think the biggest thing for me is that I want it to feel like an intimate gig where everybody can get to know me more for the first time, and I definitely want to have that vibe about it. But we haven’t really gone into the production of it all yet so I’m very excited to let my mind run loose and figure out what my show is going to look and sound like. You’ve been touring with Take That, how much has performing as their special guest helped prepared you for your own tour? Have they given you any advice? Yeah it’s crazy to say that the Take That gig has been my kind of warm up for my own tour, but it’s been so so fun, it really has. We’re just over half way now and the boys have been amazing, they’re constantly just checking up on me, asking if I’m OK, Gary’s given me little tips here and there on how to keep my voice in good knick and yeah it’s been really great. It’s your first tour and you’ve already seen demand from fans for additional dates; that must make you feel good? Yeah, it’s been overwhelming really. I mean I just can’t wait to get up on a stage for the first time, in 90

front of a crowd that I know have bought tickets to see me and only me. So yeah, you just feel the support there, because I’ve felt it from releasing ‘Ghost’ but to be actually stood in a room with all that positive energy and I know my adrenaline’s going to be on fire. For now you’re touring the UK but already you’re travelling a lot and all over the world for work. Off duty is there anywhere in the world you’re itching to travel to? Anywhere where I can have the sun, a beach and cocktail. Obviously performing a tour and travelling across the UK with such a rigorous schedule is going to be demanding, both physically and mentally; what do you do to look after yourself whilst you’re out on the road? The biggest thing for me is making sure I stay hydrated, drinking lots and lots of water. Oh and sleep! Sleep is key. A lot of the time on tours people think you go out and have crazy nights out but for me I’ll be balancing it all up and making sure I get plenty of sleep to make sure my batteries are charged and energy levels are high for the next date! Not only do you sound sensational, but you always look beautiful. Please tell us your secret? I definitely have key products that I stick with. My skincare regime has always been really important to me, and will continue to be, particularly with how much stage makeup I’ll be wearing throughout the tour. I’ve always used Dermalogica, it’s very soft and good for sensitive skin and for removing makeup it’s been great. As for my hair, I couldn’t live without dry shampoo. Ella Henderson’s debut UK Tour kicks off at the Birmingham O2 Academy on Sunday 25th October. For the full list of dates, and tickets go to: www.ellahenderson.co.uk www.stubhub.co.uk

MASER ATI GR ANTURISMO SPORT

Seeing the GranTurismo Sport in the flesh will get your heart racing. Thanks to its balanced and seductive design, its parent car, the GranTurismo, has been universally acclaimed as one of the most stylish coupĂŠs of all time. The Maserati Style Centre has now fine-tuned a few of its details to produce an even more elegant sporty personality that will delight enthusiasts.

MODE DRIVES THE MASERATI GRANTURISMO SPORT

The nose is the first part of the car to grab the attention: either side of the traditional Maserati oval radiator grille are two innovative large air intakes which not only improve the air flow and the cooling of the front brakes, but also act as a stylistic junction between the central grille and the new light assemblies. There is also a new aerodynamic splitter lower down in the centre.

At the rear of the car a number of details make the car instantly recognisable: first to catch the eye is the newly-designed tail light assembly with a special burnished finish which accentuates the effect of the 96 LEDs, while the oval exhaust tailpipes are black as per the standard Shadow Line trim. The Chrome Line option, with its wealth of elegant chrome-plated finishes, is available on request.

On the sides of the car, the pronounced miniskirts are available in black on request and emphasise the exceptionally dynamic lines while also playing an important aerodynamic role. The outcome of a specific wind-tunnel design project, they have the crucial task of conveying the flow of air to the rear wheels in the most efficient manner possible: an example of form serving function.

The rhythm, force and movement of the GranTurismo Sport are exalted by the innovative metallescent Blu Sofisticato finish, a colour which makes the bodywork even more alluring. Last but not least, the large 20-inch Astro Design rims offer a good view of the Brembo brake calipers, also available in the absolutely original Blu Opaco Anodizzato (anodised matt blue) finish which 96

once again highlights the car’s sporty personality. Comfortable, luxurious, sporty: these are the sensations immediately conveyed by the interior of the GranTurismo Sport. The interior boasts exquisite materials, expert craftsmanship and obsessive attention to detail in a new form that combines perfectly with the closely-studied ergonomics. The objective is to prioritise the desire for a sporty drive while ensuring unbeatable comfort and spaciousness. The newly-designed front seats with integrated headrest guarantee greater comfort and better support when cornering. A new bezel underneath the headrest adds an extra sporty touch. In combination with the leather, the central part of the seat and back can be upholstered in perforated

Alcantara® (standard on the version with MC Shift electro-actuated gearbox). When you place your hands on the new steering wheel you will notice its flattened rim, the longer Trofeo Design gear shift paddles and the new, more distinctively profiled grip. All these features make it more comfortable but are also tailored to the needs of a sporty driving style. Another very important feature for those who appreciate a more sporty interior is the lightweight pedal board in perforated aluminium, which provides a direct link between the driver's instinct and skill and the car's response. The instrument panel is highly legible in all lighting conditions and, with its digital rpm counter, clearly displays exactly the right time for gear shifts.

The GranTurismo Sport 4.7L V8 engine stands out for its silent running, performance and reliability. An engine that inherits the mechanical sophistication which has always been a Maserati hallmark, united with numerous innovative solutions such as the special DLC (DiamondLike Coating) finish used for the tappets and camshaft lobes, an innovation that significantly reduces friction. The engine’s 460 horsepower changes personality to match the situation: from the discreet purr of urban driving to the powerful thrilling roar of sporty driving on the open road. The choice is in the driver’s hands.

97

Verdict: This car is in a class of it’s own when you get out on to the open road. Straight away you totally feel at one with the car, as it is feels incredibly light and nimble. Every turn is precise giving confidence to stretch it’s legs leading to another thing I love about the GT, which is the glorious sound it produces. Overall and without any doubt, this car is driving perfection. In only the second time of MODE Drives history it gets my 5 star plus rating. Rating:
