#girlgains It’s the movement created by Zanna Van Dijk and her two best friends Tally and Vic that is taking over social media. Speaking of the movement Zanna said “it was created to provide a way for girls from all over the world to connect with other like minded individuals to support, inspire and empower one another. It all started with a hashtag, which lead to a community and now we are expanding into events - to bring the girls together in real life. We aim to show girls how to make gains - not only physically, but mentally and emotionally. We want to support each other to become fitter,

healthier and happier in every aspect of our lives.” Love it? Well it’s easy to join in, just use the hashtag #girlgains on your social media posts to connect with other women. They also have an instagram account @thegirlgains where we share content and information about any upcoming events. And their events are definitely ones to look out for! They’ve already hosted a sell out porridge cafe takeover and a series of events in association with Reebok Gym that all sold out in under 30 minutes. We’re feeling the girl love but we will elbow you out the way for a place at the next event...#sorrynotsorry

Rihrih previewed a pair of the socks on her Instagram, telling her 22.6m followers to ‘upgrade your sock game’. Under Pressure? Our Top Tips for de-stressing won’t take up too much of your day but may just improve it. Written by Helen Bateman.

The Essentials...

We actually need a certain amount of stress in our lives. Otherwise we wouldn’t have the motivation to get out of bed each day.

The Ancient Egyptians first recognised the therapeutic properties of plants in their highly concentrated form, soaking flowers and leaves in oil and then using linen to filter out the scented oil. We have millions of smell receptors inside our nose, which connect to the area of the brain responsible for emotions and memory. High quality oils can be bought from most health food shops and you don’t have to be an expert in aromatherapy to use them. Geranium oil is particularly good for relieving stress and rebalancing hormones, while ylang-ylang and lavender are both relaxing. Just a few drops in an oil diffuser when you get home from work, will help to soothe away the strains of the day. If you’ve time for a warm bath, add a few drops to that too.

But as we all know, the demands of jobs, families or just our modern way of living, sometimes put us under increased pressure and we can struggle to cope with it. Hormones released by intense or prolonged periods of stress can lead to anxiety, depression, headaches and high blood pressure. Regular exercise, a healthy diet and getting plenty of sleep are great for controlling stress but often, the very source of our tension can leave us with very little time to devote to ourselves.*

It’s all in the Mind... It seems like everyone’s getting Mindful these days. Even famous sorts like Michelle Obama and Richard Branson advocate that we should all be aware of our thoughts, emotions and sensations in the moment, without judgement. It’s not just a trendy fad; we think there’s a lot to be said for this ancient Buddhist practice. You might not have a spare hour to spend meditating in your Zen garden, but take a couple of minutes each morning when you open the curtains. Focus on the sunrise, the birdsong or whatever it is you notice. For that short moment, forget about yesterday and stop worrying about the day ahead. Just appreciate the wonder of the here and now.

Getting the right balance... Yoga has maintained its popularity over the years for those wanting to balance their body and mind. Recent research has supported what practitioners have believed for decades and proved yoga’s benefits for many common conditions, including stress and depression. But if you’ve not got time to join a class, try including a few simple yoga poses in your daily routine. Have a go at a simple forward bend before you go to bed. Stand with your hands on your hips, exhale and bend forward from your hips rather than your waist. Bring the palms of your hands or your finger tips slightly in front of you or beside your feet. Relaxing in this pose for just 30 seconds to a minute each day will calm your brain and help relieve stress. Source: The British wheel of yoga

People Power...

And Breathe... Yes, we know you’ve been breathing since the day you were born but too many of us don’t breathe properly. It’s easy to get into a habit of shallow breathing but we should aim to use our lungs to their full capacity. Diaphragmatic breathing expands the abdomen rather than the chest. Amongst many other health benefits, this kind of deep breathing can decrease stress levels. With practise, it can become part of everyday life, perhaps even while you’re waiting in the traffic every morning.

When you’re feeling stressed, it’s important to be around the right people. We all know the types who will moan and complain and zap our energy further. Surround yourself with happy, positive people, who might just pass on a little of their vibrancy. Better still, spend some time with a person you know will tell you something funny. A good, hearty laugh relieves physical tension and stress, leaving your muscles relaxed for up to 45 minutes. Humour helps you keep a positive, optimistic outlook in difficult situations. Laughter is, after all, the best medicine.

HEALTH & FITNESS

You know what they say, “behind every great body there is great woman...” OK well its close enough and when it comes to theses two ladies it’s 100%true. They are responsible for shaping some of the best bodies around and so we decided to catch up with them, to find out their secrets and to learn their ways... 15

HEALTH & FITNESS Obviously clients expect a lot from you but it goes both ways. What advice do you give to people to help them get the most out of a workout? Come in with an open mind. Trainers will have you doing all sorts of weird movements and you might be thinking "what on earth am I doing?" - but trust us, we have our reasons! Also - go in with a good attitude and take any challenges head on. We are there to push you, so you will be working hard!

Zanna Van Dijk Queen of the #girlgains and social media sensation, Zanna is paving the way for young women with a drive to achieve and get the most out of life. From her awesome sense of style, and zest for life, to her killer body and banging recipe ideas, she’s a trainer to be reckoned with. If you’re after the body of a fitness model, might we suggest you let one train you?? For those who don’t know who you are, could you tell us a little bit about yourself? Hey, I am Zanna! I am a 22 year old personal trainer, nutrition consultant, blogger and fitness model from London :) I have my finger in many pies and no day in my life is the same as the last! What inspired you to pursue a career in fitness? I definitely didn't see myself going down this path when I was younger. I actually completed an undergraduate degree in Speech Science and I am a fully qualified speech and language therapist wouldn't have guessed that would you!? While I was at uni, I fell in love with fitness, nutrition and overall wellbeing. I would spend all my spare time reading books, listening to podcasts and doing research. I soon realised that I spent more time looking into fitness than I did into speech therapy, and that this was my true passion. I finished uni, travelled for a few months, and then as soon as I got home I applied for a masters (which I start in September), did my PT course and moved to London!

What’s your mantra? "The goal isn't to look fit, it is to be fit". So many people become so focused on aesthetic goals and often compromise their health and performance in pursuit of these. In my opinion, we need to put our efforts into becoming fitter and stronger, then the physical changes will come.

What can people expect from a session with you? An intense workout that is personalised to your needs and goals... interspersed with lots of laughs! My clients always end up becoming my friends and every session is challenging but fun. It is much easier to push through a tough session when your trainer is distracting you with bad jokes!

Fitness and food go hand in hand. What’s your go to food to fuel up on? If I am in need of a good healthy meal, I will always go for meat (usually chicken) with a mountain of veggies (usually broccoli, peppers, courgette and onion) and then sweet potato! All cooked in coconut oil, yum! It is a great balanced meal of protein, fats and carbs. Fitness fashion is taking over. What’s your workout uniform? I swear half my workout wardrobe is monochrome - I tend to wear black to train in with a pop of colour. I have some crazy leggings and bright coloured bras which I love! I try to wear open/floaty tops to keep me cool - but let’s be honest, it’s mostly to show off the detail of my sports bras.

Squats, lunges, burpees. We all love to hate them but what’s your killer move in the gym? Pull ups - I get every single client doing them. They are incredible for your upper body but also for your core. You can adapt them in so many ways to people’s abilities and preferences. Plus there are a million and one variations to mix it up and really build up every single client’s strength. We’ve all got a tune that gets us going, what’s the soundtrack to your session? I love Runaway by Galantis and of course Break Free by Ariana! And finally, where do we sign up? I have a website which details all of my services and has a contact form, or you can email me directly at zannavandijk@gmail.com :)

Workout like Zanna You’ve been briefed and you know the score, she’s a tough trainer who gets results so now it’s time to get a taste of what it’s like to workout Zanna style... Exercise 1: Mountain climber burpees Who doesn’t love a burpee? The only difference with this exercise is that when you hit the ground and extend your legs out, you perform two mountain climbers, bringing your left knee to your chest then your right knee, before jumping back up and completing your burpee! An all round great move, that we love to hate.

Exercise 2: Tricep push ups with a 4 second eccentric phase

Exercise 3: Single leg glute bridges with a 2 second hold at the top

Start with your legs extended, toes on the floor, hands on the floor with your arms extended underneath your shoulders. Place your hands together with your index fingers and thumbs touching (should look like a triangle). It should take you four seconds to lower (I never said it would be easy) before coming back up. Repeat 12 times.

Lie on your back on the floor and bend both knees so that your feet rest on the floor close to your bum. Brace your abs and raise one leg up and bring the knee toward your chest. Drive the heel of the other foot into the floor. Bridge up until your body is in a straight line. Do this 10 times on each side.

Elissa

Elissa is as tough as she is beautiful. With years of experience and coming from a multi disciplinary background, you can expect results from the creator of METcore, the revolutionary workout that is taking the capital by storm. Elissa is in the business of transforming bodies and helping people to achieve optimal health and fitness and that’s fine by us.

For those who don't know you, could you tell us a little bit about yourself? I have been a fitness professional and reformer and mat Pilates instructor for 10 years working with an illustrious clientele in London, New York and Los Angeles. My background as a former National tennis player and ex dancer contributed to the evolution of my creation and signature class METcore - combining the attributes of both sport (strength, agility and fitness) and dance (posture, grace and flexibility) I founded Form with the intention of reinventing the London based fitness studio class, creating my signature workout METcore, a unique and highly effective workout for men and women alike. This workout encompasses every facet of promoting a healthy and optimally functioning body. METcore is aptly phrased, "a one stop shop for your fitness everything"

training, utilising the TRX, Ski erg (skiing simulator), kettle bells and the METcore MOTR machine.

What inspired you to follow a career in fitness? I've always had a penchant for fitness and being active. Growing up, I played the national tennis circuit and later, carved out a career in dance and performance.

These 8 minutes of maximum energy exertion are proven to release a cocktail of anti ageing hormones, specifically Human Growth Hormone, decrease cortisol levels, improve cognitive function, combat disease, incinerate fat and induce endorphins, to name just a few. Look to burn up to 650 calories per session. We welcome all levels of fitness.

Being a fitness professional and imparting my knowledge to my clients is my calling in life. How would you describe METcore and what can people expect from a class? -METcore is a fitness class performed on a cylindrical shaped Pilates apparatus. It combines all facets of training, specifically core training, as balance is a prerequisite for the class. METcore encompasses all the vital elements of smart training, which include balance, coordination, posture and alignment work, resistance, cardio and stretching.

Obviously clients expect a lot from you but it goes both ways. What advice do you give to people to help them get the most out of a workout? Sleep is critically important if you want to perform at a superior level mentally and physically. Smart nutrition is also imperative to fuelling your workouts and feeling great.

One can expect a fun, dynamic, highly efficient and effective 50 minute workout of exercises that strengthen, lengthen and tone as well as improve c a rd iova sc u la r fitness and health. Not only that the final segment of the class comprises of Speed 8. Eight minutes of high intensity resistance

5. What's your mantra? Eat well, Sleep well, Breath well, Love well, Live well Fitness and food go hand in hand. What's your go to food to fuel up on? Eggs would have to be my go to food, not fried, however! They're the perfect source of protein and fat and have an abundance of vital nutrients. Raw greens are also highly energising.

Fitness fashion is taking over. What's your workout uniform? - Form have just launched our activewear line which is very exciting. Available on our website,www. formstudios.co.uk and at the studio. Fitness wear is so fashionable, it's become the new black! Squats, lunges, burpees. We all love to hate them but what’s your killer move in the gym? It would have to be the jumping curtsie lunge. This exercise takes sculpting the legs and posterior to a whole other level and with the plyometric element, you can integrate cardio. A time efficient exercise too! We've all got that tune that gets us going, what's the soundtrack to your session? "Lifted" by Emeli Sande is definitely on my workout soundtrack. The lyrics motivate and resonate and the killer up tempo beat helps you push that extra bit harder. "Paradigm" featuring AME, another highly motivating track. And finally, where do we sign up? www.formstudios.co.uk I look forward to welcoming you to the FORM community!

Workout like Elissa: Now you’ve met the trainer, it’s time to get acquainted with some of her moves. Beautiful bodies here we come. Exercise 1: Walk out plank with arm rotation - great active stretch that targets core, arms and shoulders

Exercise 2: Single leg V sit - great for sculpting entire core & working the quads

Standing in an upright position, feet hip width apart, roll down keeping the legs straight and walking the hands forward on the floor until the body is in a plank position. Rotate one arm up towards the ceiling, stabilising supporting shoulder, creating an open chest. Switch sides - rotating to the opposite direction with the other arm. From the plank position, walk your hands back to meet your feet, maintaining straight legs and sequentially articulate the spine back to standing position.

Lying supine (on your back) both arms outstretched above head, legs straight, bring the upper body into flexion (crunching forward) at the same time lifting the right leg straight up as high as your flexibility allows. Then dropping the right leg down slowly, roll back onto the floor resuming the start position. Repeat 10 times on each side 17

Exercise 3: Plank frog jumps great for core, arms, shoulders and fat burning! Begin in a plank position. Arms straight. Jump both feet all the way up towards your hands and then jump back to resume the plank position. Repeat 20 times

In a recent survey of British women, individuals were asked, what part of the body they most desired for themselves. Late Night Munchies Explained We don’t need to tell you that after a few drinks (perhaps a few too many) we can experience surges in our appetite and a desire for food but now we can explain why. A recent US study offers up the explanation that alcohol makes food smell better! Exposure to alcohol sensitises the brain’s response to food aromas, making us more receptive to its foodly charms, which can in turn, of course, lead to increased calorific intake. 5. PACK LIGHTLY

It may be summer and you may be jetting off to sunnier climes but don’t even think about zipping up your case without packing your trainers first. Being away from the stresses of everyday life provides the perfect opportunity to get out and train, plus the more you sweat the more sangria you can enjoy. Running is an easy way to train while away, requiring minimal kit, no equipment, plus it’s a great way to make sure you take in more of your destination! Trust me, you can’t argue with me on this one...

1. BE REALISTIC Yes you’ve got more time, aside from sunbathing and lunch your diary seems wide open but don’t got out full throttle. Your holiday is supposed to be a break so unless you’re already highly active, make sure you’re not overdoing it. Plan to do 2 or 3 runs per week and keep them short so you’re more likely to stick to doing them. Take in some great scenery and enjoy the ride.

2. PLAN YOUR ROUTE Download a GPS/mapping app that allows you to pre-plan a route. Remember you’re unlikely to know where you are or your way round and we don’t want a 3 mile run turning into 10 because you didn’t turn left at the piazza. Strava route builder is great; they’ve recently launched Strava Local which shows you routes regularly run by locals.

3. GET ADVICE FROM SOMEONE LOCAL It’s always wise to chat to the concierge and ask if they have any recommended routes, or places to avoid, often they even have maps to hand out. You might even learn that the resort or hotel you’re staying at has a running track! Bonus.

4. CHECK THE WEATHER If you’re headed for tropical climes then be wise to when the heat is at its most aggressive. It’s advisable to go out when the day is at its coolest, if you’re not used to running in the heat it can soon take it out of you and leave you feeling worse for wear. Also, don’t forget to drink plenty of water before and after. If you plan on running for longer than an hour then make sure you take water with you too. 22

A couple of pairs of shorts, a vest and a climcaool t-shirt are essentials and if you’re a lady, don’t forget your sports bra, a bikini top won’t cut it. Pack a few pairs of running socks and just the one pair of trainers. Make use of the hotel laundry so you can keep reusing your kit. Don’t forget sports sunglasses too or a visor, heat stroke is serious and it’s incredibly important that you dress responsibly.

6. BECOME A PARKRUNNER Hitch up with like-minded runners in nine countries around the globe (anywhere from Australia, to Denmark, to Russia, to South Africa). The format’s the same wherever you go: free timed 5K events that take place at 9am every Saturday morning. There’s even a name for the runners who make a habit of travelling to experience new ones: parkrun tourists. And if you enjoy alcoholic indulgences on holiday, consider joining the Hash House Harriers (gotothehash.net) the self-styled “drinking club with a running problem”. There are about 2,000 clubs in nearly every country on earth (excluding North Korea and Iran!) so you’ll meet running as well as drinking buddies wherever you travel. Most hash clubs charge a small fee per run. If running really isn’t your bag then check if your hotel has a gym. Most resorts offer yoga classes and aquaerobics or regular beach volleyball sessions which are great for getting fit and keeping social. Or why not set your alarm for a little earlier than usual and make the most of having the pool to yourself by getting in a few serious laps before breakfast. Written by Rew Landells

Mon Amie… Want to know the secret to beautiful skin? So do we, which is why we spoke to beauty expert and the woman behind Amie, Fiona Parkhouse. “My advice always to people who ask me how to look after their skin is: get into good skincare habits early and keep them up! Cleanse and moisturise your skin every day without fail. I love cleansing with water and always use our best-selling facial wash, Morning Clear Purifying Facial Wash, which is nourishing and moisturising as well as cleansing. It is also important to use the right moisturiser that’s created with your skin-type in mind. I love our award-winning Morning Dew

Matte-Finish Moisturiser with orange and lemon blossom which is light and hydrating yet controls oiliness and shine, leaving skin mattified and soft. Once or twice a week, I recommend relaxing with a face mask treatment… a de-stressed mind leads to de-stressed skin after all! Spare yourself 10 minutes to lie back and do nothing and let the mask deep cleanse and revitalise your skin.” Morning Clear Purifying Facial Wash £4.95; Morning Dew Matte-Finish Moisturiser £4.95; Spring Clean Deep Cleansing Mask £5.95 www.amieskincare.com

Fit, Firm & Fabulous You’ve put the effort in at the gym, you’re surgically attached to your yoga mat and you find yourself wanting to adopt the plank position whenever you’ve got a spare minute but still you feel you could be firmer, your abs tighter and your arms shapelier. So what if we told you we’ve found the solution and there’s not a needle or scalpel in sight.

RODIAL SUPER FIT TUMMY TUCK £65

RODIAL SUPER FIT BOOB JOB £65

The science: A Rodial best-seller, this product has a cult following (we’re high ranking members), and claims to help reduce the abdomen area by up to an inch in just eight weeks. It’s an intensive formula that helps improve skin tone, with Gemmoslim™ and fast-acting wheat protein improving elasticity and texture for a smoother and firmer looking stomach.

The science: This revolutionary and innovative gel works by “blocking” fat cells as they travel around the body, meaning that when applied daily to the chest area, you could see a bust increase of up to half a cup! Containing Matrixyl 3000 which helps to smooth and recue the depth of wrinkles and fine lines and pomegranate extract which helps to prevent ageing, it would seem that Boob Job does what it says on the box only without the long recovery time, scalpels and mighty bill you could expect from a Harley street clinic!

What Sophia thought: “Bikini season is here and I am dedicating all my time to working on my core so if there’s a product that is going to help enhance my results and show off my hard work, I’m there. After four weeks I’ve noticed better definition and improved firmness... six pack here I come!”

What Sophia thought: “I’ve been using Boob Job for four weeks and can definitely see a difference. I do a lot of exercise and am well aware of the strain it can place on your chest so am conscious of keeping my bust and décolletage area looking its best! I’m a firm believer in the old ‘prevention is better (and cheaper) than the cure’ mentality, so will certainly continue to use Boob Job to help maintain firmness and ‘perkiness’ where it matters!!”

NIP + FAB BUST + TUM KIT £29.50

NIP + FAB UPPER ARM FIX £12.95

The science: Firm and tone those problem areas fast with Nip + Fab’s super duo. This body firming kit contains Bust Fix to boost the bust + Tummy Fix to tighten tummies the perfect beach body prep! Ideal for bodies in need of a helping hand, Bust Fix works to visibly plum and firm the appearance of skin around the bust and décolleté using fast acting mangosteen extract, while Tummy Fix uses a formula containing active ingredients that promote elasticity, help to sculpt and hydrate the abdominal area.

The science: Put down the dumbbells and pick a bottle of this up, STAT. Smooth + firm your upper arms to perfection with this innovative gel formula, Upper Arm Fix. The best selling Upper Arm Fix contains a unique combination of active ingredients including caffeine to stimulate circulation and promote the breakdown of fats and synephrine which increase skin smoothness and tightness.

What Coral thought: “So I recently received the ‘bust + tum kit’ from Nip+Fab –it was perfect pre-holiday timing so I dived right in. I had a week’s notice to get Rhodes ready and although I was never going to achieve a ‘bikini body’ I religiously applied morning and night. I half hoped for a quick toning effect for the area’s most likely to get an airing on the beach but wasn’t sure given the countdown was on. But I’m an optimist and it seems I was right to be as yet again Nip+Fab came through for me. Both are equally impressive with discipline, a decent diet and exercise. I was so happy that results, although small, were noticeable in such a short time, I resumed application immediately on my return and invested in the cellulite fix too, you know, for those awkward, takes too long with exercise alone parts around the thighs.”

26

What Sophia thought: “In case you hadn’t heard, I get married this year and sculpted arms rank high on my list of priorities. Since using Upper Arm Fix my arms have noticeably appeared more defined, the skin texture has improved (no more orange peel skin!) and they’ve felt more toned (goodbye bingo wings)!”

A-Z of Wardrobe Essentials...

Denim Le Sk £130

FRAME

When it comes to finding the right pair of jeans, fit trumps label every time. Just because your favourite celebrity is wearing a certain label, or swears by them do no assume they’ll be right for you. One size does not fit all. Try different brands, different styles, sizes and cuts and expect to have them tailored – it’s hard to find really good jeans straight off the rack. Don’t be afraid of trying different colours too, black and white are both great additions to any wardrobe, while a pair of blue jeans will always see you through. And remember it’s not the cost of a pair of jeans that determines their value; it’s the way they make you feel and most importantly, the way they make you walk.

Men should apply the same logic, if you’re blessed with a manly physique and muscular thighs, please, please, please don’t try and squeeze into a skinny fit jean. Fashion comes and goes but style is forever, so when you’ve found a fit that flatters you, stick with it.

So the great jean debate, which are the best? Is it the skinny jean or the boyfriend cut? Or perhaps they should be high-waisted? As for colour, should they be black of stonewash? Torn or untorn? And what about brand? Who you should be wearing is an entirely different matter altogether! Some fashionistas might argue there is a right answer, but we would reply that it almost certainly changes every day so in our book, if the jean fits, wear it.

#MODEtravel : DUBLIN

Visit Dublin

With its best days long gone and just around the corner, there has never been a better time to visit Dublin.... One hour and twenty two minutes. That’s how long it took me to travel to Dublin from my doorstep. Of course, for emphasis I have not included time spent eating a bacon sandwich and having a cup of tea in the departures lounge of Doncaster Airport and I ought to add that I do live conveniently close to the airport but that’s just the point, it is convenient, more than perhaps I had previously given it credit for.

Arriving in Dublin at midday we reached our accommodation for the break, the O’Callaghan’s St Stephen Green Hotel, which as the name would suggest, sat right on the edge of the beautiful St Stephen’s Green – a park space I immediately made note to explore at some point during my visit. Having never visited Dublin I must say I was slightly thrown off at first, all my preconceptions of the city (which were mainly based on the idea that it rains a lot) were thwarted

as we happened to visit on one of the warmest and sunniest weekends of the year so far, so suddenly it felt as thought I was not in Ireland at all but a sunny city on the continent, just where everyone spoke English (albeit with a charming accent). After checking into our rooms our group agreed to meet in the bar, “When in Dublin...” and after an obligatory “Welcome to Dublin Guinness” we all headed out to find a spot for lunch and to begin our exploration 37

of the enchanting city. One thing that was immediately apparent to me as we walked through the streets and passed the bars and restaurants with their overflowing terraces, was the great sense of youth the city had despite being steeped in history and having college choirs older than America... And it turned out my instincts were right, while Dublin may be old and wise it is young at heart with 48% of its population being under 35 years old.

TRAVEL

#MODEtravel : DUBLIN Not wanting to risk our first meal of the trip being anything but excellent we asked a local (and yes she was under 35)for her recommendations, and settled on Pygmalion, a stylish restaurant and bar with a team of international chefs, located just off Grafton Street, where I enjoyed the Grilled Clonakilty Black Pudding & Smoked Chicken Salad. Eating a deliciously prepared lunch in a vaulted and dimly let restaurant does two things for you, it leaves you feeling full yet wanting more and bolsters your credentials as a trendsetter, both things I appreciate. Lunch done we made our way back out into the sunshine, taking a moment to let our eyes readjust after having been sat in the arches and with the sunshine came the crowds and so we decided that it was probably wisest that we take our tour of the city off the pavements and onto an open top city bus, the best way to really see a place in my opinion... Dublin’s city tours, which you can hop on and off at your convenience take in all the major sights, giving you the perfect opportunity to see everything and get your bearings. On my first trip on board I noted down all the sights and attractions I wanted to revisit and got to grips with where each location was in relation to the next. It’s safe to say by then end of the trip I was pretty much a local. It must also be noted that taking the tour is much like attending an underground comedy club. Each driver I had the pleasure of meeting was chock full of Irish comedy gold and certainly made the ride all the more enjoyable, passing on really useful insider tips, between sets.

heading onto dinner.

We hopped off earlier than our hotel so that we could take a walk through the city in the evening sun and made a Guinness stop at the Temple Bar Pub in the heart of the popular Temple Bar area. Open for over 160 years, and home to a Ireland’s largest whiskey collection with over 450 bottles, the pub which hosts live music daily and has a charming inside-out garden is a popular destination and whilst it might price itself as such it’s worth an honorary visit if it’s your first time to the city. After soaking up the lively atmosphere and feeling it necessary that we relinquish our spot in the garden to some of the patient sun hungry punters who eagerly waited for someone to leave, we dashed back to the hotel for a quick change before

On most press trips we find that the tourist board jam packs the stay with whistle stop visits to as many sights as possible leaving little free time to explore the area at our own leisure, but with Dublin it was quite a different experience. In fact, dinner in the evening was the only thing that they had pre-arranged, the rest of our time was our own, so we were quite excited for the surprise of it all and none of us were left disappointed. Our first evening was spent at the grand and striking Fire Restaurant at Mansion House on Dawson Street. Originally built in 1864, the dining room is a fantastic space of vaulted ceilings and stained glass windows and certainly makes an impression. After enjoying a

38

cocktail in the lounge downstairs we were escorted to our table in the main dining room in all its bustling glory. The menu was extensive and the food expertly prepared and served. I enjoyed the Hereford Beef Carpaccio with parmesan shavings and, crisp shallots and truffle oil, a luxurious dish that melted in the mouth, and one which I longed to savour whilst fighting the urge to devour it quickly. By the time our main courses had arrived, restaurant was alive with voices, laughter and ambient music. It’s hard to explain how Fire made me feel but it was as though I was sat in just right the place, being seen by all the right people, having simply the best time. It would certainly be the type of venue I’d frequent with friends for special occasions, and for when I wanted a little extra pizzazz with my side salad. My main course was the Roast Tenderloin of Pork; a beautifully cooked fillet of pork, rich with flavour, with a pesto stuffing, rolled in pancetta and a red wine jus, served with ‘champ’ mashed potato and green beans. Every dish was presented artfully and the portions were generous and hearty without being overwhelming and I even managed to save a little room for dessert. Following dinner we decided to visit a cocktail bar that had come highly recommended, Peruke & Periwig, located just across from Fire and known for its master cocktail offering and unique and quirky design. It was the perfect end to a triumphant first day in the city of Dublin and as we finally headed home to our hotel, you could sense the anticipation amongst the group for what the next day would bring.

Saturday morning, and after an easy breakfast we all agreed to head as a group to the world famous Guinness Storehouse. Once again we took advantage of the City Bus and timed it so we should arrive and complete the tour around 12pm, which in our opinion was a sociably acceptable time to then enjoy the included pint of Guinness (if I had a pound for every time I said Guinness...). It’s worth mentioning if you plan to visit the Storehouse (and really you must) then a midweek trip guarantees quick entry, or arriving early on a weekend. Anything after 11:30am Friday - Sunday and you might find yourself getting a little thirsty in the queue. I couldn’t quite get my head round the sheer vastness of the storehouse, as we first approached there was a quaint little gate and a two chimney building with the brand emblazoned on the gates, and I remember thinking, how lovely, then of course the bus driver pointed out the rest of the empire on the left hand side of the road. In fact the St James’s Gate brewery is more like a small town than a solitary building.. Your experience starts by standing at the bottom of the world's largest pint glass, which rises up through the centre of the seven storey building.

If full, the giant pint glass atrium would hold 14.3 million pints of Guinness and ends in the Gravity Bar where you can enjoy your pint of Guinness with uninterrupted 360 degree views of Dublin city, covering everything you could possibly want and need to know about the famous dark ale, from the craft of brewing and cooperage and transportation, through to advertising and sponsorship in between. Whilst it might surprise you to know that prior to my trip to Dublin, I had never sampled the famous brew (apart from during my university day’s but that involved a shot of Bailey’s too so we’ll not count that) and can honestly say the Guinness Storehouse was my far one the highlights of the trip for me and I am now a fully fledged drinking of the black stuff. Taking in the city in the Gravity Bar, with my pint in hand I couldn’t help but feel entirely welcome and at ease, so much so that the group of us decided to slip into the bar just below where a live band was playing so that we could join in the revelry that was so inviting.

and educate my taste buds so took myself off (by foot – it’s an easy city to navigate!) to the Irish Whiskey Museum on College Green (other whiskey experiences are available) where I was guided through a complete history of the spirit before finishing with a tasting. The experience was fascinating and I left feeling quite the expert, having learned so much about the rise and fall of whiskey production and popularity in Ireland and the social and economic significance of its consumption. A pint of Guinness and three whiskey’s later I found myself stood outside Brown Thomas department store in the heart of the capitals’ shopping district (perhaps that’s not a real surprise). Home to an unparalleled range of designer

Having been converted to drinking Guinness I wondered if the city of Dublin could further impress

39

brands and loved my locals and international visitors alike, Brown Thomas is arguably Irelands most beautiful lifestyle store. With brands such as Balenciaga, Oscar de la Renta, Roland Mouret, Gucci and Victoria Beckham, to name just a few, lining the walls and filling the rails, Brown Thomas offers a shopper’s paradise and firmly puts Dublin on the map of luxury shopping destinations. With luxury jewellers Boodles occupying an impressive corner spot just across from Brown Thomas, a multitude of premium high street brands hosting stores throughout the city and dozens of independent and vintage shops including, open by appointment only, Dirty Fabulous, Dublin certainly holds its own in the Retail Therapy Break category.

TRAVEL

#MODEtravel : DUBLIN Having shopped till I dropped I returned to the hotel to freshen up before meeting with the rest of the group for dinner. With reservations at Fallon & Byrne, we were unsure of what to expect, none of us had heard of it and at first were a little confused as we arrived at what looked suspiciously like a Food Hall, with its just caught fish, organic veg and artisan stocked deli counter. Just when we thought perhaps we might be cooking our own, we noticed a chalk board saying ‘Restaurant Upstairs’ and after breathing a sigh relief (I’m not quite as good a cook in practice as I am in theory) took our table. If the tourism board wanted to show us the diversity of restaurants available in Dublin then they most certainly succeeded. Compared with the previous evening’s venue, Fallon & Byrne seemed more reserved and intimate, it was equally as fabulous although it was although it knew this and didn’t quite feel the need to say it so loudly. The lighting was

dim, there were lots of candles and it struck me as the type of restaurant that grow to call ‘mine’, somewhere I’d reserve for my closest friends, haunting it regularly, arriving early along with the pre-theatre diners and staying late, leaving with the last crowd, having enjoyed devilishly good wine over good conversation and even better food. Speaking of the food, it was exquisite, the menu was not as vast but it just happened to have everything I wanted, which on this occasion was the crispy Tamworth Pork Belly to start and a perfectly cooked fillet of steak for main (in all honesty I had originally ordered the scallops but long story short, I ended up having a steak and was glad for the change). After a good fifteen minutes of us all insisting how impressed we were with our meals, “No, but mine was simply to die for...” we emerged from the restaurant to find the weather had broken and it was raining so we occupied a couple of taxi’s and headed across the city to a pub we had each at some point during our visit been encouraged to check out.

Cobblestone, a drinking pub with a music problem, is well worth a visit. By the time Sunday rolled around I was both exhausted and desperate to hatch a plan to stay, as there were still so many places to see and things to do. Sadly the hotel refused to accommodate me indefinitely so after breakfast I made a plan to take in a last little slice of Dublin and made my way to eh park that I had promised to visit right at the start of my trip. Walking through the landscaped gardens that were opened in 1880, I came across artists along the perimeter fence mounting their work for sale as I took the paths of park through to the Little Museum of Dublin. A hidden gem, the museum captures the history of the city like no other. Launched in 2011 with a public appeal for historic objects, today there are over 5,000 artefacts in the collection each offering their own insight into the story of Dublin through the 20th Century. With guided tours every hour, and three floors of history to explore, plus special exhibitions including Dear Christy – The Christy Brown Collection and

The Cobblestone which can be found in Smithfield, in of the city’s oldest neighbourhoods, is home to live music seven nights a week and is run by Tom Mulligan, whose own family have been playing Irish music for five generations. If you’re in search of a glamorous night, then skip this and stay city centre where you’ll enjoy cocktails and fancy wine menus. But if you’re looking for a more authentic experience of the city and somewhere to enjoy a pint of Guinness that’s packed with laughter, music and locals then The

Alfie Byrne – The Shaking Hand of Dublin, The Little Museum of Dublin served as a fitting end to fantastic weekend. So how to sum up Dublin? In a word, surprising. Not just a city best suited to hens and stags it is steeped in history, Dublinia offers visitors an opportunity to experience Viking and Medieval Dublin, rich with culture and art, might I suggest the Dublin Literary Pub Crawl? And fun for all the family with water sports a bike tours city wide and attractions such as the National Wax Museum and Dublin Zoo. Dublin is a city for everyone, it’s for foodies and whiskey drinkers, it’s for shoppers and culture vultures. It’s for couples and groups and family and friends. Would I go back? In a heartbeat, and I’d stay for the craic ...and the Guinness. FEATURED PROPERTY

Welcome to Parkhead Hall There are properties that come on the market every so often that get your attention, But then there are the kind of properties that only come to market once in a lifetime that take your breath away and see you racing to the agents. Parkhead Hall is such a property.... Designed by Mitchell-Withers in 1864/65 the property was originally named ‘The Woodlands’. It was a house of fine proportions, the first floor approached by an imposing staircase with an oak and iron balustrade, and the dining room was reputed to have been panelled with 16th Century oak taken from the long gallery of the old Manor House in Sheffield. On his death in June 1898, the house was sold to Robert Hadfield, the managing director of Hadfields with vast works in Attercliffe and Tinsley. He embarked on substantial alterations, adding a two-storey block comprising billiard

room, library, two further bedrooms and a bathroom. The Woodlands too acquired a new name, Parkhead House and it remained one of the family homes for forty years. In 1939 it was sold for a staggering ÂŁ6,750 and it was opened as a house for thirty-five elderly men. Over the years the grounds surrounding the house became reduced as parcels of land were sold for building. At some stage the 16th Century oak from Sheffield Manor was removed, the fine fireplaces were blocked up, but glimpses of its past grandeur remained.

53

In 1988 Parkhead House became surplus to requirements. The elderly gentlemen moved out and it was put up for auction. With over four acres of land and situated in a prime position, it was a very desirable piece of real estate and it was sold in June 1989 and transformed into corporate offices. In 2003 the current owners (only the third family to live there) bought the hall and it was once again restored to its original and intended purpose as a fine family residence. And we are happy to report that the opportunity has arisen to acquire the exquisite Grade II listed Hall.

HOME & GARDEN

Situated in fabulous gardens and grounds of approximately three acres with a further acre available by separate negotiation, Parkhead Hall is located in one of Sheffield’s most desirable suburbs with good local amenities and falling within the catchment area for excellent local schools. This beautifully appointed Gentleman’s Residence has a wealth of period features and celebrates magnificent historical architecture whilst offering extensive luxury living over 3 floors.

and stone hearth of the magnificent fireplace, a main focal feature of the grand Entrance Hall.

With grand entrance gates and stone steps rising up to double Oak doors with stained glass set within feature gothic fantasy architectural detail, you won’t be left short on first impressions.

Throughout the property exceptional attention to detail has been paid, with bespoke oak furniture by Clive Christian in the study and kitchen and stained glass windows on the Main Galleried Landing. The hall is grand not just by design but in character, with a cosy snug it can provide comfort and a sense of home whilst on occasions where more grandeur is required there is the Ballroom (warning: you’ll notice your friendship circle rapidly increase in size after news of your Christmas party gets out).

Arriving in the hall, you’ll be taken by the sweeping staircase and superb carved timbre fire surround

Cook Yourself Young Backaway from the botox and forget faddy diets because Elizabeth Peyton Jones’s follow up book is here and its set to revolutionise the way we cook and to make the dream of looking 10 years younger a reality. We caught up with the author of ‘Cook Yourself Young’ (aka our new bible) to find out exactly how to harness the magical ‘youthing’ powers of the kitchen and what we can expect from the latest clean eating title... For those who are unfamiliar with your first book and your approach to wellbeing and cooking, could you tell us a little about yourself? I would like to say I am not a chef, but I do believe that real food tastes delicious and is difficult to cook wrong. It only really goes wrong if you over salt it, over sugar it, over cream it or over cook it and as I don’t cook with any of those things my recipes are super simple and delicious no matter what. I started life as a herbalist and a naturopath and defaulted into food and health because I realised that it was pivotal in clearing illness and making people feel younger and fitter. My first book Eat Yourself Young is about the 5 ageing processes (all natural) but when exacerbated make us feel 150 when we are 40, the 5 most ageing foods and the 5 most rejuvenating foods are in the book and a good grounding to anyone who wants to know a bit but not get bogged down. COOK YOURSELF YOUNG… it sounds too good to be true, are you suggesting that we need not spend a fortune on face creams and can instead find the secret to eternal youth in cooking? Or not cooking, eating raw gives the greatest benefits! Yes, it’s true, you can throw away your products and exfoliate with lemon juice and cool

your eyes with cucumbers and then juice the remainder! Eating well and taking out the foods you are allergic too will 100% make you feel and look younger. It will plump up and hydrate your drying skin, it will boost your elastin and collagen, create a robust and healthy ‘repair’ system, which will allow cells to rejuvenate and reinvigorate your skin and you all over. However, if you feel safe with your creams then eating well will only enhance their benefits, so it’s a win-win situation. As well as improved looks, what other super benefits can we expect from adopting the COOK YOURSELF YOUNG diet? The book talks you through how to diagnose yourself, so you learn your ‘body language’, what are those aches and pains? What do they mean? The diet will boost your immune system, reduce inflammation and alkalize your body. This in turn will help feed the brain giving you concentration and focus, a better outlook on life and more energy and with more energy comes self-esteem and sexuality, which in turn affects every single relationship you have, and more importantly makes you feel GREAT and very powerful. Is the diet suitable for everybody? It is suitable for everyone however, there may be some ingredients which don’t suit everyone, for example, if you have a thyroid issue, stay 61

away from the brassica family, if you have a nut allergy, don’t eat the nuts, if you have candida or a fungal infection, don’t eat the yummy treats and puddings. That is why it is important to ‘read your body language’. For those less disciplined amongst us, is there one golden rule that we should absolutely live by? Drink your vegetables daily & remember there are NO super foods, so make sure the veg you choose has lots of colour and lots of variety. Help I’m craving sugar, what should I do? Chew on fennel seeds or ginger root. Ginger root is so strong it blows your head off so you’ll not want to put anything else in your mouth. Peppermint oil can do the same and is great for headaches and is a great one for making the “need for sweet” go away. If you are someone who can’t do without sugar and you hunt it down at night, then check to see if you have a fungal infection (candida). It is also generally connected to an emotional issue. What’s’ your mantra? For those who say it can’t be done, it doesn’t stop the person doing it! For more wise words and to buy the book visit: www.epjhealth.com

Detox Yourself The trend for detoxing shows no sign of letting up. All about cleansing your insides, which in turn makes for beautiful outsides, a detox is a good way of flushing the bad stuff out of your system and helping you to refocus on your health. So hop aboard the health wagon and read our thoughts on two of the most popular detox programmes out there to find your fit.

Plenish Reviewed by Sophia King Plenish is more than just a cleanse. Their cold pressed juices (which are so fine and pulp free that the essential nutrients can be absorbed into your bloodstream and feed cells within 10 minutes) are perfect for kick starting a detox period or healthy eating plan. By consuming raw, organic green juices while eliminating processed sugars, coffee and alcohol, meat and too much cooked food, you assist your system in becoming an oxygendrenched alkaline one which will help reduce inflammation and boost immunity and health. What we thought: “Whilst I only had one day of drinking the juices, to get the full benefits from the programme, I was told to abstain from eating processed and inflammatory foods like dairy and meat as well as drinking stimulants like coffee and alcohol for a minimum of three days before my juices arrived (yikes)! Going veggie was hard for a

carnivore like me but I was determined to get the full benefits from the cleanse and no one likes a cheat. When my juices arrived (I had the Harmony package) I was excited by all the colours and the great names each drink had and lined them up neatly in my fridge (took a photo to post on instagram, duh) and got ready to get my juice on. You get six juices to drink over the course of the day and the helpful people at Plenish provide a reusable glass straw and a handy book with advised times to enjoy your juices, plus information on the health benefits of each and recipes to enjoy post cleanse to help prevent you from going back to your old ways and undoing all the good you’ve done! My personal favourite was Pineapple2, it was certainly the tastiest, packed full of antioxidants and was sweet enough to stave off any sugar cravings. I had difficulty stomaching the final juice of the day Cashew Milk, which was slightly chalky and had 62

quite a strong aftertaste but it promised a restful night’s sleep so I made sure not to leave a drop! While the days running up to my juice cleanse felt very much like a detox, the juice programme itself felt more like a crash course in nutrition. The programme felt as focused on getting as much goodness into my system as did it on ridding my body of the all the bad stuff. I slept brilliantly and woke up feeling light, bright and full of energy.” Plenish Level 1 Harmony Cleanse Duration: 1 Day (3 days prep) Taste:

Cost: £81

Results: Lost 1 kg, improved sleep, no bloating! Would I recommend: Yes. For me Plenish would be the perfect antidote to a period of overindulging and for when you’re in need of a rich nutrient top up!

Tea Time Reviewed by Coral Keers For those who want an every day answer to detoxing, listen to Dr Jackson. “I did, and I certainly feel better for it. Dr Jackson’s is a niche cosmeceutical company created from 21 years of pharmacognosy research, utilising the best from nature in all of its products. From the range of health teas, I chose the Detox tea, formulated to cleanse and purify following a period of indulgence, and after a #MODEtravels break it did just that. It’s blended using natural ingredients with traditionally known medicinal properties centred around digestion-boosting Fennel. Add de-toxifying and diuretic plants including Elderflowers, Aniseed, and Senna to help debloat and rid the body of harmful toxins and free radicals and you’ve got yourself a recipe for goodness. It also contained liquorice known for possessing anti-inflammatory properties and this for me was a pleasant overriding flavour.

Nosh Detox Reviewed by Sophia King Loved by celebrities (Gwyneth Paltrow is a fan) and health junkies alike, Nosh Detox is the award winning company founded by Geeta SidhuRobb that is focused on helping people find their way back to a healthier and more balanced place through the power of juicing. The raw, unprocessed, handmade, freshly blended whole fruits juice diet helps you to maintain high energy levels, increases metabolic rate and reduces those dreaded sugary cravings that so often derail diet efforts! What we thought: When news that the Nosh Original Three Day Cleanse was on its way to me, I felt the sudden desperate feeling that I should find the nearest restaurant and order one of everything. Thankfully I didn’t, instead I took Geeta’s advice and enjoyed a ‘detox ready’ meal to prepare myself for the epic juicing journey I was about to embark on! The cleanse consisted of a Lemon and Ginger tonic each morning which was really refreshing and certainly left me feeling energised. I then had four juices to enjoy throughout the day which had been made specifically for me based on my tastes and cleanse ambitions! I can’t say I had a favourite juice, because I enjoyed every one. Of course abstaining from solid food for three days has its moments, I found it particularly hard when my fiancé rustled up a solid meal for himself and I did find myself missing real food but it was more a psychological craving than one based on hunger, because the juices actually left me feeling quite full! My favourite thing about my Nosh experience was the pamper package I received that supported

my cleanse. I had bath salts, daily herbal teas (each selected to complement the day’s specific goals) and castor oil to aid a full colon cleanse, plus a few other goodies. It certainly made the whole process more enjoyable and the body brush and salts helped me to feel as though the outside matched the good going on in the inside. By the end of the three days I had noticeably clearer and brighter skin, I felt full of energy and whilst I was excited to sink my teeth into the first bit of food I’d had in days, I was fairly sad it was over because the results were so evident. I loved the support I received throughout with emails from Geeta and her team, full of advice on how to get the most out of my cleanse and tips on how to maintain the results. Nosh Original Juice Fast Duration: 3 Days Taste:

Cost: £165.81

Results: 2kg weight loss over three days, improved sleep, high energy levels and clearer skin. Would I recommend: Absolutely. Aside from the great results (I felt re-energised and fabulous), the juices all tasted great so it didn’t seem a punishment like cleanses can sometimes. Overall: I’m a firm believer that you can get all the goodness and nutrients you need to be healthy by making sensible choices when it comes to diet but for a special occasion or for when I’ve fallen off the health wagon, a detox would certainly help me refocus and get a head start on my health goals. 63

It’s advised that you enjoy this blend once in the morning and once in the evening over a 4-5 day period to kick-start your body into functioning more effectively and despite a long brew (5 minutes) the taste is refreshing and doesn’t dry the mouth like some similar brands creating a ‘nice’ way to gently detox.” Dr Jackson’s Detox Tea £21 drjackson.co.uk

The Good the Green and the Healthy Healthy food news and tips for a happy (full) you. Green, Lean and Berry Good

Go for Green

Who said salads couldn’t be sweet? Healthy food needn’t be a bore, give your tastes buds a treat and impress your friends at your annual Garden Party with this super summery salad.

Before you scoff at the idea of a veggie based cocktail just hear us out!

Viva Strawberry & Avocado salad with honey dressing

This is The Beauty & Wellbeing Issue so we HAD to try and offer up something a little healthier, it was that or we lost the cocktail feature and that was never going to be good for anybody...

This easy salad is bursting with fresh flavours. The unusual combination of the sweet strawberries and the peppery rocket along combined with the sweet and sour of the shallots and honey make a perfect salad for any dish. It’s also easily multiplied for easy entertaining and buffets.

So add a little green to your gin this summer and whilst we’ll admit, if it’s boozy it’s never going to be absolutely healthy, a veggie cocktail still counts towards your five a day and there is no arguing with that...

Serves: 2 - Prep: 10 mins - Cooking time: 0 mins

Kale Collins

You’ll need: For the dressing: 2tbsp olive oil 1tbsp Cider Vinegar 1tsp lemon juice 1tbsp tsp honey 1 shallot, finely sliced Good pinch of rock salt Black pepper For the salad: 10 Viva Strawberries 1 Bag of Rocket 1 ripe avocado

If you're someone who wants nothing more from summer than a frosty Pimm's Cup loaded up with produce, then a Kale Collins is right up your alley.

**Note: Your juice yield will vary depending on which juicer you use. We found that it takes about 3/4 pound of kale to produce 4 ounces of juice.

Serves: 1

What to do:

You’ll need:

1. Muddle lovage leaves with the cucumber slices in a Collins glass or small mason jar.

What to do:

9 lovage* leaves

1. Whisk together the dressing ingredients in a small bowl and set aside.

3 (1/4-inch) cucumber slices

2. Hull and quarter the strawberries. Pit, peel and slice the avocado.

1 1/2 ounces Hendrick's gin

3. Tip the rocket into a bowl and toss in half of the dressing. Scatter the dressed rocket on a serving plate and top with the avocado and strawberry slices.

3/4 ounce kale juice**

4. Drizzle the remaining dressing over the slices and top with the chopped pistachios

*Lovage is celery-like leafy herb, pairs with muddled cucumber and lemon juice for a really clean, refreshing cocktail.

1/2 ounce fresh lemon juice from 1 lemon 2 ounces chilled seltzer Garnish: Lovage leaf and a thin cucumber slice

Handful of pistachios, chopped 65

2. To make simple syrup, combine 1 cup water with 1 cup sugar in a small saucepan and heat over medium heat, stirring constantly, until sugar is dissolved. Cool before using. Simple syrup will keep in a sealed container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. 3. Add simple syrup, gin, lemon juice, and kale juice. Stir to combine. Fill glass with ice, top with seltzer and stir gently to mix. Garnish cocktail with lovage and thin cucumber slice.

CULTURE

THEATRE & DANCE Richard II by William Shakespeare

Alice’s Adventures Underground (The Vaults)

Shakespeare’s Globe, 21 New Globe Walk, London until 18th October

The Vaults, Leake Street, SE1 Closes 30th August 2015

Within the hollow crown, That rounds the mortal temples of a king, Keeps death his court.

In this, the 150th anniversary of Lewis Carroll’s tales of Alice, Alice's adventure, it's yours... In the Vaults deep underneath Waterloo Station discover Wonderland in all its nonsensical glory. Journey down the rabbit hole to gorge on cakes that will have you bumping your head on the ceiling, smoke a pipe with the Caterpillar as he tells you his psychedelic tale and take tea with the maddest of Hatters; all whilst trying to avoid losing your head at the hands of the fearsome Red Queen. Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here? That depends a good deal on where you want to get to... Make your choice and find yourself at the centre of the story as you wander through Wonderland, piecing together the puzzle to search for Alice who's been lost in the looking glass. Experience immersion like never before in this interactive, puppetry-packed, fusion of story-telling, music, circus and spectacle.

Ruling by divine right, but himself ruled by caprice, King Richard exiles Henry Bolingbroke and seizes his father’s vast estates. While Richard is distracted by a rebellion in Ireland, Bolingbroke returns to England, intent on recovering his rightful property and, with the support of his disgruntled peers, perhaps seizing the crown itself. Dazzlingly eloquent and ceremonious, Richard II invests a weak and selfdramatising man with tragic status and represents Shakespeare’s most searching exploration of the meaning of kingship and the rising powers that can destroy it. MODE Says: For a truly magical atmosphere, book the Midnight matinee performance to experience the Glove under the cover of deepest night...

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time Leeds Grand Theatre, Leeds, LS1 25th- 29th August Winner of seven 2013 Olivier Awards, this highly- acclaimed National Theatre production, embarks on its first ever nationwide tour. Christopher, fifteen years old, has an extraordinary brain – exceptional at maths while ill-equipped to interpret everyday life. When he falls under suspicion of killing Mrs Shears’ dog, it takes him on a journey that upturns his world… Based on the award-winning novel by Mark Haddon, adapted by Simon Stephens and directed by Marianne Elliott, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time is a thrilling new stage play from the National Theatre.

SPORT Investec Ashes Test Series

This summer England takes on Australia in a bid to regain the Investec Ashes in a five Test Series kicking off early in July and closing with the final Ashes Test at The Oval in August. It promises to be a thrilling summer of cricket!

MODE MEETS: ANDREA FAUSTINI Hot on the heels of his incredible run on The X Factor comes Andrea Faustini’s debut album release, Kelly. Not only a man with a flawless voice and big heart, Andrea has also shown off his skills for writing with his first single Give A Little Love. We caught up with the Italian Bear to talk about life after The X Factor, his new album and why being an adult isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. living in a surreal version of it all, my UK was The X Factor house and studios, but now I’m living here for real and it’s great, i think it’s given me a chance to learn so much.

You must so proud and happy with the album? I’m very, very happy because I think it embraces a little bit of everything. There’s a lot of different stuff and it’s not all the same so I’m very pleased with how it’s turned out!

What about the food though? Have you found anywhere that matches up to the great Italian cuisine you’re accustomed to!? Well I’m actually learning how to cook so I’m improving myself...

It’s really uplifting album and has quite a positive message, was that important when you were writing it? Yeah and I think this is clear even in the first single. That’s the message I wanted to give, just being positive, smiling through tough times, being kind to the people you love an even to those you don’t, and I think that’s what life is about.

What’s your specialty? I know how to cook pasta with cherry tomatoes, it’s very impressive. So now you’re a ‘famous’, if you could make one diva demand, what would it be? I actually don’t feel like a superstar but if I had to be a diva my request would be to have a personal driver. No more oyster card!

Was Give a Little Love always going to be the first single or did you find it hard to choose? Yeah I think so, I think it’s a good preview of the album and I co-wrote the song which is pretty exciting. We heard you sing week after week on The X Factor so we already knew you had an incredible voice but now we get to hear music that you’ve actually helped to write, was it important to you as an artist that you had an input on the writing of the album? Yeah, I guess, I finished recording the album and I realised it had everything and I was really proud but it was just missing the positive and funny side of me, which is why I decided to write Give A Little Love and I got to work with some amazing writers, who helped me co-write the song and I am so happy with it because I think we did an amazing job and I really like the song because it reflects me, both my vocals and my personality. Apart from your own single, Give A Little Love, are there any other songs you can’t get out of your head? At the moment I’m loving Ariana Grande and I keep finding myself singing her songs in the shower or when I’m getting ready! This is your first album, it’s your first single, we’re just getting to know you as an artist, but looking ahead are

there any artists you could see yourself collaborating with down the line? Well one of my greatest inspirations of all time is Stevie Wonder but of this generation I’d love to collaborate with Sam Smith and Lianne La Havas, I love the vibe of her music and I think a collaboration would be so good, I think I’d learn a lot from an artist like her. Straight after the show you went out on The X Factor tour, that must have been an incredible if not daunting experience? It was absolutely incredible, so much better than I expected because the reaction was just absolutely mad and even with the other acts, we got so close with one and other and we still try to keep in touch and have a group chat on whatsapp so we can stay updated on what’s happening! So work aside how are you finding life in the UK? I’m loving it. I’ve been living in the UK form a while now but I’ve never really lived here in the real sense of the word. During The X Factor I was

69

Can you tell us one thing about you that we might not already know? Something you don’t know... well I’m experiencing living alone for the first time and I’m learning how to look after myself and I have found out that I’m so lazy! Sometimes I wear socks twice when I don’t want to do the washing. I am so excited to be getting my own place in the summer and I can pick out all the furniture but I keep forgetting how hard it is to actually look after yourself and keep it tidy! I thought being a grown up would be a lot more fun! If you could give one piece of advice what would it be? It’s hard to give advice but I think we should all just trust ourselves, and trust our journey and the timing of our lives and if there is something you want then you should just go for it. So to finish off, how would you describe the album in just three words? Positive, emotional, ...and um amazing! No positive, emotional and serious. And you should buy it... Andrea Faustini’s single ‘Give A Little Love’ is available to download now from iTunes and his debut album ‘Kelly’ is due for release 17th July and is now available to pre-order.

Miranda July

Alexandra Shulman

Tender, gripping, slyly hilarious, infused with raging sexual obsession and fierce maternal love, the first novel by the filmmaker, artist and bestselling author Miranda July confirms her as a spectacularly original, iconic, and important voice today, and a writer for all time. Here is Cheryl, a tightly-wound, vulnerable woman who lives alone, with a perpetual lump in her throat. When Cheryl’s bosses ask if their twentyone-year-old daughter, Clee, can move into her house for a little while, Cheryl’s eccentrically ordered world explodes. And yet it is Clee—the selfish, cruel blond bombshell—who bullies Cheryl into reality and, unexpectedly, provides her the love of a lifetime. The First Bad Man is dazzling and unforgettable. This is The Sunday Times and New York Times bestseller, a Guardian literary highlight for 2015 and a Huffington Post 'One to Watch' in 2015. With credentials like that, we reckon it’s worth a read!

Outsiders see things others don't. Blessed with status, love, wealth and connections the Tennisons seemed the most enviable of families - until Antonella and Matteo Fullardi, dangerously attractive Italian siblings and offspring of an Italian fashion dynasty, enter their well-managed lives. Calligrapher Katherine, gallery owner Rick and their student son Josh discover that the Fullardis are just as unsettling and alluring as the exotic parrots that now inhabit their tranquil London garden. But this damaged pair are the catalyst that propel the Tennisons into a spiral of chaos, calling into question their place in a changing world of new money, new morality and new menace.

MUSIC Who: The Maccabees What: Marks to Prove It ‘Marks To Prove It’ will be released on July 31 and features the band’s latest single, also titled ‘Marks To Prove It’. It is The Maccabees’ fourth album and the follow up to ‘Given To The Wild’, released in 2012. The three year gap has been acknowledged and Felix White, lead guitarist of the much loved band said “It just had to be good enough. We thought it was going to be finished a year ago, but it just wasn’t quite there and now I think it’s magic, so it’s done.” Speaking of the album in a press release, Orlando Weeks said, “One of the things we were clear about for the album was not having too many voices, too many characteristics, so that you could get to know the sounds, the instruments. And then, at the end, that meant we could reintroduce those characters, not in a way that was aping what had gone before but as a familiar force.”

Who: Foals What: What Went Down Following the release of their savage and animalistic single ‘What Went Down’ come’s the band’s new album of the same title. The band will release the album, which was recorded in the South of France, on August 28. Philippakis said of the record: “Ford [producer] really pushed us and we couldn’t be happier. It’s going to be our best album, that’s how we feel at the moment, which is unusual for us to feel that at ease. I think this is the record where a lot of the different sides of the band have come into focus.”

TECH

MODE REVIEWS:

MISFIT SHINE Never mind your heart; it’s all about wearing your workout on your sleeve with the Misfit Shine. We’d like to say we put it through its paces but on this occasion it was us that really got put to the test...

Focused on inspiring people to be more active and develop healthy habits, Misfit are pioneers in the world of wearable sensor technology so when the offer to review their Shine model came along we could hardly say no! I’ve been looking for a piece of wearable tech for a while now, lots of emphasis on the wearable part. If you’re a sports nut and live in a gym then you’re spoilt for choice when it comes to activity trackers but for those of us who occasionally wear shoes other than trainers and want a monitor that will work with any outfit then the Misfit Shine is the perfect solution. The bold design of the Shine is a winner for me, the elegant all-metal disc with its beautiful halo lights can be worn as a necklace, watch or on a clasp making the technology totally adaptable and interchangeable. I personally wear it as a watch on most days but on an evening out (when I know there is dancing on the cards) I use the clasp which can be discretely clipped on a strap so I can still track my activity without compromising my style! In fact the Shine can be worn just about anywhere even when you’re wearing next to nothing. Wear it on your wrist, your shoe, ankle (if convict is a look you’re happy working), your bra, hip or even as a broach. Made out of

aircraft-grade aluminium the device is designed to last a lifetime, is super strong, waterproof and available in lots of colours so there is something for everyone! It’s also worth noting how secure and comfortable to wear it is. It’s never fallen off my wrist and as long as when you’re wearing it on the clasp you stick to thin materials or loop it over a strap so the magnet can fix securely, you should never lose it.

things going for it too. There are no complicated buttons, you can check progress (based on your own specific set goals) by simply tapping the face which also doubles up as a clock. It’s easy to sync with your phone and the Misfit app, which is compatible with other fitness apps including MyFitnessPal and Runkeeper is simple to use too, and I loved how I could even see how intense my activity over the day had been (you get more points based on exercise intensity so a brisk walk is more rewarding than a casual stroll). Once

Aside from its charm and good looks the Misfit Shine has lots of other 72

you’ve logged into the app you can set your own goals, and the Shine not only tracks your steps but a range of activities from yoga and swimming to cycling and running so every ounce of exertion gets counted, plus you’ll also see an estimate of how many calories you’ve burnt! The app is also social meaning you link up with friends, and you’ll be sent notifications as they overtake you or creep up on you, so if you’re competitive like I am, you’ll find that a great motivating tool!

Without need for charging there are no annoying cables, bonus, and the fact that it doubles up as sleep monitor is great because it really helps you to focus on how important sleep actually is. It’s essential for a healthy lifestyle, concentration and weight loss so should never be overlooked and when you’re working to a target of 7-8 hours each night, going to bed early suddenly seems more appealing... I told you I was competitive. Overall the Misfit Shine has impressed me on so many different levels. I pride myself on having an active lifestyle and regular go running and take yoga but sometimes my job can cause me to be quite sedentary for long periods of time so being able to tap in and see my progress is great as it reminds me to get up stretch my legs, take in some fresh air which in turn helps me refocus my mind so when I get back to work I feel re-energised and more productive. I love how versatile it is and the fact that I can wear it in so many different ways

meaning I am not limited by it and I never have to compromise on fashion and choose to leave it behind because it doesn’t work with an outfit. I’d certainly recommend it and plan on investing in some of the accessories and even other colours so I can have my own little Misfit wardrobe where the possibilities are endless! If you do decide to invest in one then be sure to add me. I’ll see you on the leaderboard. I’ll be the person at the top.

Panamera S E-Hybrid The Panamera S E-Hybrid is a parallel plug-in hybrid. This means that it can be powered by the combustion engine alone, by the electric machine alone or by both units working together. In this way, it is able to exploit the power generated by both propulsion units – a concept that’s been proven since 2011.

The high-voltage battery is recharged in around 2.3 hours from an industrial electrical outlet. Or whilst driving, by recuperation – break energy recovery – or via the combustion engine. Thanks to innovative lithium-ion technology, its capacity of 9.4 kWh means that it also stores much more energy. The battery is maintenance-free and covered by a six-year warranty (up to a maximum of 74,565 miles). The 3.0-litre supercharged V6 engine generates 245 kW (333 hp), the electric motor 70 kW (95 hp). Combined, they deliver 306 kW (416 hp) to the road at 5,500 rpm. With both drives working together, the Panamera S E-Hybrid accelerates from 0 to 62 mph in a mere 5.5 seconds. Fuel

consumption (NEDC) is remarkably low at an average of 91.1 mpg, as is the CO2 emissions figure of 71 g/km. The operating range of the hybrid drive begins with emission-free, quiet driving up to a maximum speed of around 83 mph and a range of approximately 22 miles. The combustion engine is fired automatically when necessary as determined by the operating strategy or actively in response to the driver depressing the accelerator pedal beyond a specially defined pressure point. The kick-down point, however, enables the maximum power output available from both propulsion units to be purposefully exploited as and when the driver chooses. In e-boost mode, 76

the combustion engine provides assistance for the electric drive – providing a sporty shunt into the future. In coasting mode, the combustion engine is decoupled to allow the car to glide for some distance under its own momentum – thereby further reducing the fuel consumption. In summary, the E-Hybrid concept promises one thing above all: sporty performance with utmost efficiency. The workings of the combustion engine, electric motor and high-voltage battery are synchronised by the electronic engine management. All processes run smoothly and harmoniously, leaving you to concentrate on what matters the most: driving.

Driving modes: With the Panamera S E-Hybrid you can get involved at any time. There are three different driving modes allowing you to control certain hybrid-specific types of driving. You can then deliberately play out their corresponding strengths. Although, ultimately, you are still always driving a Porsche.

E-Power - E-Power mode (electric driving) is activated as standard. Every journey starts with electricity alone. Fully electric drive with high torque electric motor for an intensive driving experience without using any fuel, e.g. for driving through town or on the way to work. With kickdown, the power available from the whole system can be called upon at any time

Sport - In Sport mode, the boost is activated when the gas pedal position reaches 80%. The combustion engine and electric motor develop the full performance potential together. For dynamic driving with a suitable gas pedal characteristic, maximum power and maximum torque

performance that you would expect. At first it is a bit strange as it starts up in full electric mode and is completely silent. You do have the drive modes to play so you are in complete control. The technology in this car is truley astounding. I drove the car from Yorkshire to London for the weekend so it was thoroughly put through it’s paces. This car it impressive. It’s quick yet very ecconomical when using the hybrid modes. Charging is not a problem either as there are more charge points popping up all the time up and down the country and charging at home is quick and easy. Cruising on the motorway the batteries are quickly recharged so you don’t have to plug in to get the benifit of all electric. Porsche have got this right. I love it.

The Panamera S E-Hybrid maintains its visual identity with the customary ‘e-hybrid’ logo on the front doors, the ‘Panamera S’ logo on the rear hatch with an Acid Green surround, the same as the needles of the newly developed power meter in the centre of the instrument cluster. The brake calipers are also finished in Acid Green as standard. The features it shares with the Panamera S models – the exterior design and the exquisite styling of the interior – are similarly characteristic. Verdict: This is a great car. It’s a Porsche so it has all the style, refinment, road presence and

77

E-Charge - E-Charge mode can be activated by pressing a button. The high-voltage battery is charged while driving by the combustion engine which generates more power. Useful for charging while driving, e.g. on motorways, for instance when there is a city route coming up where you will want to drive on electricity

When this fourth generation Mitsubishi L200 was launched it was hailed as the truly stylish alternative to the standard slab-style pick-ups on the market, with a more car-like user-friendly design which continued through to its interior. to this day the L200 remains the only double cab on the market with Super Select 4WD, which enables you to alternate between two- or four-wheel drive on the road as driving conditions dictate.

Indeed, the growth in popularity of the double cab pick-up in the UK is largely attributed to the L200, and it is still amongst the very best-selling, proving that big commercial vehiclescan tick the box both as a work hauler and a passenger car. What’s more,

Since its introduction there have been many rather special variants of the L200, but none which offers such superb value as this L200 Challenger. camping equipment or whatever you are in to. The Mitsubishi L200 also has the best towing power so if your’ve got a boat or caravan this is ideal. I was so impressed with the Mitsubishi I actually bought one.

It has an extended load bed for greater cargo capacity and can tow up to three tonnes. Yet, despite its workman-like credentials, it also provides saloon-style comforts like climate controlled air conditioning, electric mirrors and windows all round (even into the load bed), alloy wheels and privacy glass, Bluetooth, cruise control and real top-of-the-range niceties such as dusk and rain sensors. With a choice of seven different colours and the option of black leather trimmed seats, we challengeyou to find a better buy.

Verdict: This vehicle isn’t just a commercial workhorse and this is the reason we’ve seen a huge inclease of pick-ups on the roads recently. This is a great vehicle for everyday use wheather it’s journeys to the office and business meetings or using it at weekends when the space comes it to it’s own.
