A 25 Year Retrospective

Letter from Yael Reinhold

When folded, the holiday Gazette was the size of a postcard. Shown here is the back of the 2000 edition, carrying a sentiment that reflects the Reinhold culture.

In the year 2000, our founder, Marie Helene Reinhold, envisioned a yearly book that would honor the three pillars at the heart of Reinhold Jewelers: a curation of exquisitely designed !ne jewelry, a tribute to the artists whose stories and creations we are privileged to share, and a celebration of Puerto Rico—its people, its beauty, and its passionate spirit.

What began as a simple family gazette has blossomed into a rich collection of themes: from the natural elements of water and leaves, to cultural cornerstones like co ee and fashion, to avant-garde expressions found in Puerto Rico’s gra$ti and tattoos. In its own way, the Holiday Book has become more than a creative project—it has chronicled the history of Puerto Rico itself over the past quarter century. From international recognition to the unwavering resilience of our island, the years we have captured together are truly unforgettable.

This book has always been a labor of love—the deepest collaboration between the Reinhold team and the Puerto Rican creative community. Photographers, graphic designers, historians, journalists, and countless Reinhold team members have poured their talents into its pages. Without them, this chronicle in time simply would not exist.

As Gabriel García Márquez so beautifully wrote, “La vida no es la que uno vivió, sino la que uno recuerda, y cómo la recuerda para contarla.” (“Life is not what one lived, but what one remembers, and how one remembers it in order to tell it.”)

In that same spirit, and in celebration of the 25th anniversary of our Holiday Book, we are proud to present this special edition: an archive of artistry, heritage, and the enduring spirit of Reinhold and Puerto Rico. We hope this journey through the past stirs cherished memories, while inspiring you to create new ones with the people you love most. May this holiday season be !lled with beauty, joy, and togetherness.

With heartfelt wishes from our family to yours,

Holiday Book: 25 Years of History

Art, fashion, gastronomy, Puerto Rican flora and fauna—these are just some of the themes that have been successfully highlighted in Reinhold Jewelers’ Holiday Book over the past 25 years.

In a quarter of a century, this renowned jewelry house has paid tribute to both culture and a sense of national identity—to that essence of “ser puertorriqueño”. Today, the pages of this project, which for many has become a collectible piece, take on a nostalgic tone as they look back at a body of work that has served as a visual archive of what has shaped the island across multiple spheres.

From the beginning, the Holiday Book was groundbreaking, setting itself apart as an unusual editorial project within the industry. It was born from a clear vision: that jewelry—beyond being wearable works of art—can and should be in dialogue with the environment where it is created and worn.

The idea of giving cultural—and often philanthropic—meaning to the extraordinary work of dozens of world-renowned designers whose pieces are sold at Reinhold came from Marie Helene Reinhold, founder of the jewelry house. A visionary businesswoman, Reinhold embraced the multiplicity of roles that a human being can embody and used both her wisdom and her access to the world of jewelry to create a project that went beyond luxury. She understood that the value of a piece of jewelry lies not only in its materials; but also in the stories it carries.

“Our founder, Marie Helene Reinhold, envisioned a yearly book that would honor the three pillars at the heart of Reinhold Jewelers: a curation of exquisitely designed !ne jewelry, a tribute to the artists whose stories and creations we are privileged to share, and a celebration of Puerto Rico — its people, its beauty, and its passionate spirit,” said Yael Reinhold, president of Reinhold Jewelers.

That is why her initial goal was to o er her clients a Christmas gift that transcended commercial promotion and became instead a celebration of what makes Puerto Rico unique. Guided by her intuition and deep social commitment, the Holiday Book evolved year after year, connecting international jewelry designers with Puerto Rican themes, places, professions, characters, and landscapes.

Over time, this tribute to Puerto Rico also underwent a generational change among its creators, yet its essence remained the same: a distinguished cultural document.

Each edition has captured a moment in the island’s recent history—its challenges, its resilience, its talent, its landscapes, and even its scars. What makes the Holiday Book unique is that jewelry becomes the thread that ties together each visual narrative, demonstrating that luxury is not only something to be admired, but also a way to reveal the reality of the world, granting each jewel a deeper signi!cance.

“I think what we’re trying to say is that jewelry is part of social and cultural reality itself. It’s part of everyone’s life. More importantly,

it is as essential as beauty, art, and design. And as we see it in jewelry, we see it in perhaps lesser-known areas of culture, like tattoos, gra$ti, or even trash. And then, obviously, we see it in the expected ones, like art and architecture. But it’s less about connecting jewelry to the social and cultural reality and more about presenting it as one and the same,” said Reinhold.

Although more than two decades have passed since the !rst “gazette” was published at Christmas of 2000, the Holiday Book has proven to embody the resilience of Puerto Ricans, reinventing itself despite challenges while remaining true to its essence.

Through the years, inspiration has varied—a challenge in itself. The early editions celebrated elements of nature and architectural landmarks, while more recent issues have honored individuals committed to Puerto Rico’s growth.

There is no doubt that the Holiday Book has grown in scope, thematic diversity, and editorial complexity. This evolution has not been accidental. It reflects to a constant reading of the country’s social, cultural, and economic context, and a deliberate intent to ensure the book remains relevant and contemporary.

Keeping a project alive for a quarter of a century requires perseverance, but also boldness and creative curiosity. The Holiday Book has shown that beauty and luxury can be committed both to memory and community.

Without losing sight of its goal of celebrating a Puerto Rico in constant transformation, this commemorative edition pauses to reflect on twenty-!ve years of publication—to look back and understand how it began, how it has changed, and why it continues to stand as a reference point both in the world of jewelry and in cultural communication.

At the same time, this is also an opportunity to learn more about the creative minds—photographers, graphic artists, designers, creatives, and collaborators—who each year bring an idea to life, turning it into a collectible book.

“When I envisioned this book, two things came to mind. First, to celebrate 25 years of work that has reflected Puerto Rico’s story. But I also wanted the new generation of clients and friends to have the chance to treasure a piece of each edition by bringing together the work of the past 25 years in one Holiday Book. Above all, I wanted it to be a celebration—of the book itself and of the de!ning moments that Puerto Ricans have witnessed throughout these years,” said Mildred Marcano, COO and VP of Sales and Marketing of Reinhold Jewelers.

In these pages, readers will encounter its origin, its transformations, the editions that have left a mark, the voices that shaped it, and the impact it has had on Puerto Rican culture and society. Witnessing this process also opens a window to the future, o ering a glimpse of how the Holiday Book will continue to

evolve in the coming years while preserving its essence: celebrating the best of Puerto Rico, page after page.

The Origin of the Catalogue and Its Reception

Gifting is something that, every Christmas, comes from the heart— with the intention of bringing joy to loved ones. That simple gesture gave birth to the Holiday Book.

For Marie Helene Reinhold, a gift had to carry intention: it had to appeal to the emotions, show gratitude, and at the same time reveal her love and deep bond between her jewelry house and Puerto Rico.

When the idea of creating a gift book !rst emerged, Marie Helene Reinhold was clear—it would not be a traditional jewelry catalogue, but rather a book with a life of its own. After producing the “gazette,” her creative mind did not stop until she found the perfect blend. Just as metals and precious stones can come together to create a beautiful jewel, she decided to unite the culture of the island with the artistry of each designer to craft a unique editorial piece.

The format of the Holiday Book broke away from the mold of seasonal catalogues. That unusual combination of jewelry with a speci!c theme allowed the pieces to transcend their role as isolated objects and instead become part of a broader visual landscape—narrating a story that went beyond material

value. That is what has made this project memorable, and distinct from any brochure that one might quickly flip through.

From its inception, it was a book meant to be treasured, reopened, commented upon, and even displayed. In short, a publication that many clients began collecting and making part of their most intimate home spaces. That very act of collecting was a clear sign of the project’s immense value.

“The process has evolved signi!cantly over the past 25 years. In the beginning, it was just an idea and a fun project that no one really thought much about. The !rst few editions weren’t considered a big deal, but as the books became better known—more like a collector’s item—the themes became more elaborate and detailed. Also, the theme became a secret every year,” observed Reinhold.

International jewelry designers began to seek participation in the Holiday Book. Appearing in its pages meant becoming part of a di erent narrative—one where their pieces were contextualized within cultural and artistic themes, and where they shared space with both emerging and established colleagues. This blend—a hallmark of Marie Helene Reinhold—brought freshness and demonstrated that curation could move beyond the commercial, building a platform that elevated renowned brands and new talent.

The consistency of its quality has made photographers, graphic artists, and all those involved in the Holiday Book’ s production view it

as a showcase with international reach. Every year, dozens of copies are sent around the world so that participating jewelry designers can keep them in their studios and homes. In this way, the talent of a group of Puerto Rican professionals—dedicated to delivering work of the highest quality—is made visible.

For Reinhold’s internal team, the project soon became more than just a year-end task: it evolved into an exercise in corporate identity. It is an e ort that involves months of planning, theme selection, !eld visits, and graphic production.

“It has become bigger and bigger, more a part of our culture, and more exciting for us to produce. It has also become more of a collector’s item for many people in San Juan. Therefore, it involves more people, draws more attention, and is a lot more fun to produce as well,” added Reinhold.

Thus, what began as an exclusive gift for loyal clientele was transformed into a highly anticipated tradition each November. Because for many, the holiday season begins with the launch of the Holiday Book

Transformations of the Holiday Book

When speaking of the Holiday Book, one must think outside the box— because that has always been the spirit of those who produce it year after year.

Over these 25 years, the themes have been diverse, but so have the designs, colors, and formats. For the Reinhold team, the goal has always been to engage with current issues, to document what is happening on the island, but always with a creative touch and that element of surprise revealed each November.

“What matters most is that each theme grows out of what is happening in Puerto Rico. The year, the events, the mood of the island— they guide us. For instance, when we created the co ee edition, we knew it was the perfect time. The same happened with the fashion edition; it had long been in our minds, but that very year the government of Puerto Rico established Designer’s Day (May 7). We had also been eager to spotlight chefs, and it happened to coincide with Natalia Vallejo winning the James Beard Award. There is always something in the air that seems to point us in the right direction,” highlighted Marcano.

The !rst editions were highly visual, with carefully produced images that “conversed” with the selected jewelry. The format resembled that of art photography books, with a narrative thread that emerged more from aesthetics than from explanatory text.

As time went on, the Holiday Book stopped being just a beautiful object and became a document with testimonial value. Each edition began to capture not only images, but also the context from which they arose: the story behind a piece, the craft of a creator, the situation of the country at that particular moment.

This transition can be clearly seen in the editions inspired by natural elements, successful personalities, and key industries on the island. Among them are The Trees of Puerto Rico (2018); The Skies of Puerto Rico (2021), which featured muralist Alexis Díaz; Puerto Rican Fashion (2023); and The Chefs of Puerto Rico (2024).

“One of the legacies I’m proudest of is helping Reinhold prioritize a photography budget so that the design quality aligned with the caliber of the images. I believe that inviting Puerto Rican photographers — ‘talentos del patio’ — into the project elevated the visual storytelling and brand. In my !nal year, we began collaborating with artists as well.

Mildred and I worked with Alexis Díaz for the cover of The Skies of Puerto Rico — a powerful moment that honored Reinhold’s legacy of working with local creatives,” said Natalia Pi Skurman, the graphic artist who spent a decade shaping the book’s visual concept.

One striking feature of the Holiday Book has been its integration of Puerto Rico’s beauty—but also of the events that have deeply impacted its people. A clear example was the 2017 edition, following the devastation caused by Hurricane María. Three years later, in 2020, after a global pandemic reshaped the world, Reinhold released The Strength of Puerto Rico, an edition that spotlighted resilience and showcased the work of 27 local foundations.

“Jewelry, beauty, and joy can be found at all times and within all social and cultural realities. It is important for resilience to recognize and embrace those things,” stated Reinhold.

The Holiday Book has also evolved in both its physical and digital formats. In its early years, high-quality paper printing was the sole medium. With technological advances, digital strategies were incorporated to expand their reach.

In 2020, health restrictions due to the COVID 19 pandemic led to the book’s !rst-ever exclusively digital release, published through the Issuu platform. Far from being a limitation, this innovation allowed the book to reach a global audience, directly bene!ting the participating foundations.

“During the pandemic, for the issue titled ‘The Strength of Puerto Rico’, we took another leap forward. For the !rst time, we purchased a digital publishing service to create a virtual edition of the catalog — allowing people to experience the book online in a time when in-person events weren’t possible. It opened up a whole new way for Reinhold to connect with its audience and marked a turning point in how we thought about accessibility and reach,” recalled Pi Skurman, adding that paper and print production have also shifted over time.

Since then, there have been experiments with binding, size, and internal structure. The 2024 edition, for instance, marked a milestone as the !rst Holiday Book with a hardcover and international press production.

The creative process has also shifted. Traditionally, the Reinhold team would select the theme !rst and then look for images to pair with the jewelry. In recent years, however, a more organic approach has been adopted: !eld visits are made to

workshops, kitchens, studios, or locations related to the theme; images are captured that depict not only the !nal product but also the creative process; and afterward, the jewelry pieces that best “dialogue” with each scene are selected. This change has brought freshness and allowed for a deeper emotional connection between content and audience.

“Reinhold has always understood how to market this catalog. In recent years, they’ve elevated it further — introducing thematic launches and carrying the concept of each edition into other experiences and campaigns throughout the year. After their full company rebrand, I’ve loved watching how the design language has continued to grow, and how new designers have taken the reins with such care. It makes me proud to see the project evolve while still carrying the spirit of what it was built on,” confessed Pi Skurman.

While remaining true to its roots, the Holiday Book has transformed by embracing new audiences, new technologies, adapting its formats, and broadening its narratives. Yet through all these changes, it has always preserved its core mission: to be an annual celebration of Puerto Rico through the lens of designer jewelry.

Cultural and social impact of the Holiday Book

With its unique concept, the Holiday Book has transcended its commercial origins to become a cultural project

with tangible weight in Puerto Rico’s creative identity.

At a time when Puerto Rican cultural identity is flourishing, it is worth noting that for 25 years this project has carried images of the island into the hands of clients, designers, collectors, and media outlets around the world. Each edition, by combining designer jewelry with local themes, serves as a showcase of Puerto Rico’s diversity and sophistication.

“Designers love to be part of the book because joining the Holiday Book feels like joining the Reinhold family. Over the years, we’ve even had designers outside Reinhold who asked to participate. It has become a cherished tradition—one that truly excites them,” added Marcano.

In the international jewelry industry, the Holiday Book breaks stereotypes by giving equal weight to narrative and cultural context as to the presentation of designers’ art and talent. This strategy has created a new model: a catalogue that is at once an art book and a cultural document.

Through this approach, jewelry ceases to be seen as an isolated object and instead becomes part of a broader story tied to a relevant theme. This not only adds value to the brand but also creates an emotional connection with the audience, who perceive the pieces as symbols of identity rather than mere luxury goods.

“As human beings, and as Reinhold, and as part of our culture, we don’t want to shy away from social and

cultural themes or from the reality of the world around us. Sometimes that means facing hard things, but it also often means !nding resilience and beauty in places we don’t necessarily think about. Being able to highlight the strength and the beauty in those areas is important for everyone. And so we use our platform for what we think is important. Our platform, of course, is also luxury jewelry, so we combine the two. But I would say an important thing to emphasize is that,” said Reinhold.

It is also important to highlight the legacy this project has left in the community, since in several editions the Holiday Book has carried a philanthropic component, shining a spotlight on and supporting nonpro!t organizations, weaving social responsibility messages into its visual narrative. These collaborations have helped raise funds, build awareness, and strengthen the bond between the brand and community causes.

Each edition stands as a testament to the historical moment in which it was created. Its pages document not only the evolution of jewelry but also cultural trends, influential !gures, and shifting aesthetic sensibilities across the country. In this sense, its value extends beyond the present and positions it as a resource for future generations interested in the island’s cultural history.

A Vision for the Future

Creating 25 editions with varied themes and consistent quality has turned the Holiday Book into a tradition—but also a challenge.

Preserving its relevance requires a strategic outlook that blends innovation, cultural sensitivity, and the constant ability to surprise its audience.

“It’s a huge responsibility. It’s the number one project we do at Reinhold. And so it feels like an honor, a privilege, and a big responsibility. Interestingly, the Holiday Book is the one thing I have been involved with at Reinhold since the beginning. Back in 2000, I wasn’t working in the business and wasn’t very involved, but I was always part of the Holiday Book. And so, to me, it feels a little bit like my baby too,” admitted Reinhold.

Reinhold Jewelers’ Holiday Book has managed to capture the spirit of the island in all its facets: its natural beauty, cultural diversity, creative talent, and ability to reinvent itself in the face of challenges. This has made it a highly anticipated tradition, as each cover, each photograph, and each story behind the jewels and their protagonists enriches a collective memory with every new edition.

With this important milestone, the Holiday Book stands as a tangible testament to who we are and what we can become. Its longevity proves that when creativity is joined with purpose, the result transcends fashions and trends.

The coming years will bring new stories, new faces, and new settings. But its essence will remain the same: to celebrate Puerto Rico, page after page, jewel after jewel.

The Reinhold Gazettes

This was the very !rst publication and it set the precedent for the Holiday Book project. In a single piece—a sheet that could be folded almost like a postcard—it featured some of the most popular designers of the time. It was a Christmas gift that surprised many with its beauty and unique style.

2001 Little Things

There are elements that, regardless of their size, possess in!nite richness and can transform any setting. That was the central theme of this book, which drew inspiration from nature and the perfection of leaves, combined with beautiful jewelry that marked the beginning of a new century. This small, square-shaped Holiday Book captured the interest of Reinhold’s clients and collectors alike for its impeccable style.

The book’s cover featured the piece Manos poderosas (Powerful Hands) by artist José Rosado. The volume celebrated the beauty of diverse hands: a woodcarver’s, a musician’s, a mother caressing her belly, someone speaking in sign language, hands that feed, those of a newborn child, of an athlete, hands that heal, and those that chart the future.

My favorite issue of the Reinhold Holiday Book has to be The Skies of Puerto Rico. I was 13yrs old when I traveled to Puerto Rico for the !rst time.
