LETTER

At Reinhold, we have the privilege of representing amazingly talented designers from a myriad of cultures who share unparalleled creativity and artistry. Their jewelry travels with us throughout our lives, commemorating moments big and small. Some pieces we save for special occasions, but many we use daily, adding joy and pleasure to the simplest activities. As we hold these works of art, we don’t often think about their cultivation, of the care and detail that transformed a seed of an idea into the beauty that we ultimately treasure.

Like jewelry, our Puerto Rican coffee would not exist without the deliberate efforts of artisan farmers who tend to their harvests with the utmost of care. It similarly transforms from an individual seed to the robust, uniquely tasting drink that enriches our daily lives. While coffee is important to cultures worldwide, without a doubt, to be Puerto Rican is to love your coffee. From the meditative solitude of a morning cup to the social gathering among friends, coffee is deeply embedded in the culture of the island. One might say, coffee adorns our lives.

Coffee also represents the resilience of Puerto Rico.  Hurricane Maria devastated the industry, killing close to 100% of coffee plants on the island. There were countless individual and collective efforts to rebuild from complete decimation to achieving global status, now winning international awards for superb quality and flavor.  These farmers are true artisans, tending to their plants with love and care and with steadfast resolution, finding passion amidst the rubble of a natural disaster. So too are the baristas, who don’t just serve a cup of coffee but prepare it as a work of art in itself and the final step of our coffee’s recovery and exquisiteness. Our resilience is embodied in each and every cup that we share when creating longlasting memories.

For this holiday season, in a year that continues to strengthen our resilience,  we present to you the coffee of Puerto Rico.  Please stop by and share a cup with us, we will be highlighting varied selections in each of our stores. Gratitude does not begin to describe the profound appreciation we have for the work of the amazing team that put together this year’s Holiday Book.

Behind every photograph are countless hours of effort mixed in with much laughter, joy and camaraderie. Josué Oquendo Natal joined us this year as our graphic designer- as you will see in the pages before you, his creativity is unrivaled. Because of his videography, you are now able to see more coverage, behind the scenes footage, and interviews to add depth to our display of the coffee production in Puerto Rico. Our photographer, Xavier Garcia , once again worked his magic, capturing all aspects of the essence of coffee in his amazing photographs.  Mildred Marcano and Maria Del Mar Ney added both vision and organization to a project that grew larger with every new week. Maria Cabrero undoubtedly kept everything together with her attention to detail and amazing editorial skills. This Holiday Book would also not be possible without the graciousness of the various plantation and coffee shops highlighted throughout who allowed us into their worlds and the designers who make up the Reinhold Jewelers family who share with us a passion for the art and creativity of jewelry.

One of New York’s coffee mainstays, it first opened in 1907 and has been owned and run by the Longo family for three genera tions. ““Reading” coffee grounds is quite an ancient tradition in my country. In her younger years, my grand mother had a reputation for the accuracy of her readings. Her house was a destination for a number of women from the neighborhood wanting a glimpse into their personal futures. As a child, I loved to spend time listening to Grandma’a narratives whenever she examined someone’s cup, and, eventually, she let me take a pass at reading her friends’ fortunes. It was a surprise to me, and even more so to Grandma, that I was just as accurate as she was in my interpretations of the women’s coffee grounds!“

“My entire memory has no space enough for coffee. I drink more than 8 espressos a day and coffee is one of my favorite drinks in the world. My love for coffee goes beyond flavor, as it represents a moment of celebration. I typically start an activity with a coffee and finish it with another one, as it also signifies the beginning and the end of my daily moments.

I remember an old friend of mine, who worked in the distribution of green coffee from Central and South America, once explained to me the secret behind each kind of coffee. It has been a long travel through taste, legends and cultures that I will never forget. So, today my love is for coffee and for Puerto Rico!”

“The most significant memory shaped by coffee was when I was at a crossroads between pursuing a future in Design or going into the Sciences. I had just pulled a late night preparing for a 10 hour Final Art Exam and next morning, made a cup (the instant 3-in-1 kind, which I had grown up drinking) to get me through the day. “One of the first dinners I had with Alex back in 1992 ended with him showing me how to make Lithuanian style coffee. How carefully he ground and measured the coffee. How the grounds went into the boiling water and had to sit still for a long time. Then he tapped the cup expertly and the grounds sank to the bottom of the cup. We bonded over many beverages, and with each one I could see the care he took in each and everything he made; food, gardens, painting and jewelry. We always returned to coffee to sort out our day. For me, coffee holds so many good memories of events and times in my life.”

Whenever I travel to great coffee producing nations, I dive right in and take my Java like a local: short & black, sweet or bitter, long & tall, or even iced. I will always give it at least a shot according to geographical preference.

“I grew up in Brazil going to my family’s coffee plantation. I remember the gorgeous white flowers that would turn into these cherry-like fruit that had the coffee beans inside. It was pure magic. The fields were as long and wide as my eyes could see and the fruit would dry in the sun for days and days. It looked like a huge field of little colourful tiny balls that as a little girl I wanted to jump in and play. That was a big no no for sure. “When I was little in Japan, I loved going to kissaten with my mother and my sister. Before the modern coffee chain cafes opened, kissaten was the original coffee/tea shop. Kissaten had a retro vibe, vintage lighting and a friendly yet quiet atmosphere. Tea & coffee were served in a cup with a saucer and the coffee was pour-over or brewed with a siphon. I would sit by the counter and watch the coffee brew with a siphon, it was like a science project. My mother’s favorite was weiner coffee (written on the menu as sau sage coffee in Japanese). After moving to New York, my mother had the hardest time finding it! No one could understand coffee with sausage. It turns out it’s Einspänner, Viennese coffee! Coffee always brings this heartwarming memory.”

“The first time we traveled to Italy as children, our first stop was at a coffee bar to get an espresso for our parents. As they were sipping on their espresso, a man walked in. “On my first trip to Reinhold and Puerto Rico for a trunk show. I was whisked away for an amazing lunch with the ladies, headed straight to the store to set up and then off to the hotel for a much-needed rest.

I am an early bird and coffee in the morning is a non-negotiable must have before I even think about my day. After searching and searching for the coffee cups, being I only saw these itty-bitty cups, I had to ask where they were. The hotel staff were nice enough to take me back to coffee table and handed me this tiny cup which I thought , what am I doing with this, I will be stuck standing by the coffee table till I get my fill. Then I started to look for the milk or cream again nothing. I walked back to the front desk , sorry but now I need some milk. They walked me back to the coffee table and introduced me to the HOT milk concept. Who knew!? Anyway, I had the most delicious intensely satisfying “albeit tiny” cup of coffee.

It’s steam would rise in delicate swirls like the early morning mist from autumnal fields. I remember her sigh at the first rejuvenating sip of the day as blackbirds sang in the low dawn light. Coffee brings the smell of home.

Allowing ourselves a moment to enjoy a warm drink, to savour the heat, the flavour, that rich scent, can seem like a luxury in this busy life. Take that moment to breathe in that memory filled aroma. Jewellery is also filled with memories and significance. It becomes part of us and is filled with our stories and has a way to transport back to long forgotten times, just like coffee”.
